02x03 - Public and Private

Okay, make a peace sign!

What is that?!

It's a giant Shisa lion!

Is it some kind of colossal villain?!
Or maybe an ancient lifeform that woke up?!

Run for it!

And over here we've got a jumbo goya plant
spawned by the extreme weather lately!

Look there!

It's gotta be a giant piece of Okinawan
tofu that spawned from mutant soy beans!

Run for it!

Save us!

Chinsuko!

Mensoore!

Ain't nothin' to it!

And while we were panicking,
they hemmed us in!

We're done for!

Haisai to you all!

For I...

am here in the tropics!

Or I was,

but I had to leave ASAP!

All Might!

Thanks for coming!

Chanpuru! Goya chanpuru!

...with shock and speculation
swirling in equal measure.

Our next story...

Three giant villains appeared in Okinawa,

yet thanks to timely
intervention by All Might,

they were all defeated
in less than a minute.

Okinawa Island was spared
catastrophic damage.

So sorry about the delay!

There was a huge mess in Okinawa
when I was on the way.

I wouldn't want you to think
I was late to our meeting

because I took it lightly, Tsukauchi.

I honestly look forward
to this sort of thing!

I've been craving some real conversation.

Here you go! The paperwork you
asked for, all filled out.

And these are... wait!

Tsukauchi, what happened to your arm?!

Well...

You were injured?! In the line of duty?!

By a villain?!

It was a villain suspected of being
involved with Trigger distribution.

And he got away.

I got off lightly, though. Just a few
cracked ribs and a collarbone.

That's your idea of light?!

If you had just called me,
I would've shown up.

I'm afraid that's not an option.

All Might can't be seen going into
battle for personal reasons.

If people thought there were lives
you considered higher priority,

it could be used to help plan
crimes or take hostages.

Well...

A public persona that conceals any
signs of the private individual.

That's the ideal form for
the number one hero.

You... might be right.

What's in that bag?

Something that someone gave me
at the scene of a day I saved.

I guess this isn't appropriate either?

To be honest...

I have souvenirs from my
trip to Osaka, too, so...

What's in the box? Soap?

Rose-scented bath salts!

It's fancy, so I thought that sister
who lives with you might like it.

I appreciate it.

If you don't mind, I'll keep the fact that
it was a gift from All Might a secret.

Of course. I can imagine the
problems that might cause.

That's not my concern, in this case.

I tend to tread lightly around my sister.

She's less... law-abiding
than I'd like her to be.

I don't like the idea of her realizing
she has a way to contact All Might.

Really?

I'm home.

Makoto, this is for you.

What is this, Nao? If you're trying
to bribe me, it's not gonna work.

Don't be ridiculous. It's just a
souvenir from someone at work.

Well, in that case, don't mind if I do.

I was hoping we could pick up the
conversation from the other day.

Here we go again.

Sorry, but I have no intention of
sharing Pop's personal information.

She's done nothing to deserve
being treated like a criminal.

That's not what this is about.

She was caught up in an
incident caused by a villain.

She needs to be questioned as
part of the investigation.

At her discretion, though, right?

Considering I heard that
she was just a bystander.

The machine went out of control!

That's... the same conclusion we've come to.

This was my bad.

It's a bad look.

That being the case, considering she
got out of it without any injury,

she wants to put the whole mess behind her.

Makoto!

Souvenirs from Osaka.

And that about wraps that up.

But doesn't she use her leaping Quirk

for unauthorized performances
and vigilante activities?

Don't you think a minor engaging
in reckless behavior is a problem?

That actually sounds like a separate issue.

Not to mention, she's been focusing all
her energy on legit events lately.

Which I've been organizing.

So, if you have concerns, I'll hear them.

You'll stonewall them, more likely.

Interpret it however you like, dear brother.

Enough with the sourpuss routine, okay?

I don't plan on breaking the law,

and if anything does happen,
you'll be the first person I talk to.

Fine. I'll drop this for
now, but don't forget,

you're responsible for someone's child.

I'm never sure when you're taking
something seriously enough.

Right, and I'm sure being overbearing
is just what she needs.

Wow, smells good!

This is exactly what I'm talking about!

What are these, bath salts?

This is a foreign brand.

Looks expensive, not the kind of thing a
policeman would buy on a business trip.

And the bag seems to be
from a different store.

Probably just something he had on
hand and used for the present...

A brand-new gift bag with All
Might's branding on it, huh?

Nao, are you working with someone
from All Might's agency?

If you're going to start prying,
then you can't have it!

Who takes back a gift that
they've already handed over?!

It's not like you use bath salts, anyway!

Well, too bad! I'll use them right now!

Big brother? Oh, come on, big brother.

Stop trying to sweet talk me.
You're being transparent.

Aw, come on!

I'm gonna make my voice heard.

Gonna let the whole world
know how messed up this is.

Yeah, Kamayan? You got beef with the police?

You that mad about being
treated like a villain?

Come off it. You really think
a guy like you can go nuts

and people won't think it's a villain?

The charges were dropped because you were
proven to have been forcibly dosed

with an ill*gal narcotic.

If you've got a problem, it should be with
the people who did the mods on you.

There's people out there who'll
do some messed up stuff, huh?

Modifying folks...

Not what I meant, though.

I mean, I've got a bone to pick with them,
but I'm talking about something else.

What's the problem, then, Kamayan?

When I was released, and finally
got home after all this time,

I was too big to fit through the damn door.

Couldn't even turn the
knob with my new hands.

There's barely anywhere in town that's
giant mantis-accessible, let me tell you.

And don't get me started about using the can!

Ended up taking a bucket
and some newspaper to—

We get it, Kamayan! Spare us the details.

He's been squatting in our warehouse
for the time being.

It's not exactly a
suite in there, though.

There are supposed to be institutions for
housing people with unique physiology.

What the hell?

So they get to decide where I live
just because I'm bigger than most people?

That's how it works for all the big dudes.

No sense being the only one to
complain about it, Kamayan.

Wrong. You got it all wrong, man.

All this stuff inconveniencing me
means society isn't doing its job.

There's not enough inclusivity for
minorities like yours truly.

Whether it's infrastructure
or social services...

So, I wanna make people aware of it.

Damn, Kamayan.

You're just complaining about being inconvenienced,

but you make it sound real noble.

He always had a way with words
despite how stupid he is.

What do you even mean by inclusivity?

And does anyone else smell something nice?

Now that you mention it...

Is that roses?

You got some kinda scent there, Officer?

What is that, cologne?

I oughta try that. Maybe I'll get some chicks.

I don't think cologne helps for guys
who have to take a dump in a bathtub.

Most of the time ain't all of the time, bro!

Nothing gets you down, huh, Kamayan?

This is ridiculous.

I wanna come here again!

If you're good, maybe.

Mr. Yagi.

Thanks for the gift again.
I gave it to my sister.

Sorry. I didn't give it
to her. I shouldn't lie.

Why not? Did you two have a fight?

She's always been like this.

She'll always make exceptions for promises
or the rules when it benefits her,

or interpret things in a way that suits her.

I mean, negotiating with the police?

That's the kind of thing
organized crime does.

And what's worse, she clearly intends for
me to clean up any mess she might make!

It's just plain malicious!

I think she might act that way
because you're her big brother,

not because you're with the police.

It just means she relies on you, I bet.

Well, if that's the case,
she's acting spoiled!

Right you are.

Inspector Tsukauchi, you smell awesome.

What's the deal, Tsukauchi?
You get a girlfriend?

Just leave me alone!

Excuse us!

We're the karate club from 3rd
Planet From the Black Hole High!

What's going on?

It's our ardent desire

They're scary looking.

to engage in some group dating and kumite
sparring with the female student body!

Now, let the passionate kumite begin!

Hope you don't mind if I cut in!

I'm the man who gives advice

on wholesome relationships from a
distance so he can't get clobbered,

The Crawler!

b*stard!

You dare interfere with our school's
traditional method for picking up chicks?!

Take this!

Wait a sec...

Hey! Are you okay, Koichi?!

Pop-tan... we'd love to do
some form training with you!

Osu!

Or maybe some striking training.

Osu!

And then... maybe some promised kumite!

Osu—!

No—!

This is the security cam footage from
the day of the incident in Osaka.

Right there. Back it up some.

Got it.

Freeze! Don't move!

You're under arrest!

The second we thought we had him,
the suspect activated their Quirk.

He broke out of custody, stole ten sidearms,

and then after firing several
dozen rounds, went on the run.

All within the span of about one second.

An acceleration Quirk, huh?

Not just a physical burst of speed, either.

His brain's working at super speed, too.

That means that as fast he's able to move,

he's able to perceive and
think just as quickly.

Some have described it as the
whole world being in slow motion.

There are some heroes who use
that kind of boosted focus

for sharpshooting or martial arts.

Yeah, but this guy's approach has
a lot less finesse, I'd say.

It might be the result of
Quirk-amplification via Trigger, considering the case.

I should run this by the Quirk
registry, just to be safe.

What you said about things
seeming to be frozen in time,

who described it that way?

It was...

O'Clock?

You're familiar with him, Eraser?

Yeah. Well, I've heard the name, anyway.

The high-speed hero, O'Clock.

A criminal response hero from
the veteran generation.

He favored an instantaneous four-hit
combo that used his acceleration Quirk.

From what I hear, he hasn't been active
in the last few years, though.

Right. The details are unclear,

but he stopped renewing his
Hero License years ago.

Could you two not hold these meetings in
our store if you're not buying anything?

You're kinda in the way.

My place is nearby.

And there are no cafés in this neighborhood.

We're not running a café, either!

Anyway, Tsukauchi, what's
this about O'Clock?

Well, I was wondering if the villain with
the acceleration Quirk in Osaka

might have anything to do with O'Clock.

As in, a hero switching
sides to become a villain?

That'd be a hell of a scandal.

No, their ages don't line up in a way
that suggest it's the same person.

That said, the similarity in Quirks
is something we can't overlook.

There's no shortage of Quirks
that end up being hereditary,

and there are systems in place

to help people with similar
Quirks receive mentorship.

So, you figure it's either a
blood relative or a student?

This is purely in the realm of possibility,
but I think there's a decent chance.

But unless we actually find O'Clock...

A lot of heroes go into hiding
after retiring, right?

Especially the guys who deal with rough
stuff and end up with lots of vendettas.

You should probably watch
yourself, too, Eraser.

You think I'm gonna treat a bunch
of criminal scum with kid gloves?

That's exactly what I'm talking about, bro!

Doesn't matter.

When you're a street level hero who earns
a lot of hate, you know what to expect.

Some get injured to the point
of having to hang it up,

and some get old enough to realize their
time's up, and quietly exit the stage.

I'm personally hoping he's enjoying
his golden years somewhere out there.

Since I could end up in the same position.

Wide swings,

anchoring your feet on the ground!

Emphasis on power! Doesn't matter
if it's a telegraphed punch!

This Quirk can make up
for any loss of speed.

Ready and...

That oughta do for today's training.

It takes some real brawn to lay into
something while sped up like that.

Eight hits in one.

That's all my stamina allows
for at the moment.

Better keep training...

Wouldn't using firearms like you
did the other day be simpler?

Nah. There's something I'd miss about the
feel of actually hitting someone myself.

No matter, then. Suit yourself.

It's not like I don't appreciate the
additional data taken from your body

in its accelerated state.

Sure thing. I'll be a hard-working
little guinea pig.

The boss doesn't get it at all.

Blasting away with g*ns?

Sure, I'll do that if I've
got no other way out.

I mean, I already did.

But that sorta thing just doesn't
suit the image I'm going for.

It's not very heroic, is it... Master?

I'm back.

Hey. How was work?

Are you studying? Good for you!

Yeah. Just getting some homework done.

Here. A little something for you.

And get a load of this!
I came up with a new move!

You did?

Yeah!

I put the can on the palm
of my hand like this...

Did you sh**t something out of your hand?

Just the usual repulsor field
that I slide around on.

But I was able to use just one hand!

I thought you had to be
on all fours to do that?

Well, when I was a kid, I used to
slide around while standing up...

and ended up crashing a lot of the time.

Koichi!

I think I must've gotten in the
habit of needing a more stable base

in order to use my Quirk at all.

But...

Today I was able to deflect
some missiles with my hands

while my feet were clinging to a wall!

And if I apply that...

I drop my center of gravity and anchor
myself to the ground with my feet.

Drop my jaw, tighten my core...

And from the stabilized position,
use my palms to...

Strike! Strike! Strike!

This is my combat form...

The burning spirit of sumo
wrestlers will inhabit my hands!

I'll call it "The Crawler:
Scrappy Thrust Style!"

Or something like that!

Pop?! Are you okay?

Sorry! It ended up being
stronger than I figured!

Dosukoi! Dosukoi!

Huh? What?

Take a good look at this, okay?!

And use it to think about what you
should and shouldn't be doing!

I shouldn't use this one!

That's right. You shouldn't!

It's the kind of thing I shouldn't do because
I could easily get carried away!

Exactly. You shouldn't!

Man, Master makes a great
example to learn from.

A negative example can be as
valuable as any, sometimes.

The opposite of a role model...

He sure is.

Eraser Head, the pro hero.

Most pros are part of a team,
but he works alone.

Why did he choose to fight as a hero?

Next time: A Rational Man.
