07x02 - Beautiful Child

Post by bunniefuu »

[uplifting music playing]

We know that there are other couples
that you're still considering.

So obviously we don't expect you
to make a decision right away.

[Mel] Yeah, but, um…

Well, we were kinda hoping
that you would still consider us.

Are you kidding? This is incredible!

Um…

Potentially.

- Right. Potentially.
- Yeah.

- [Marley] Yeah.
- Yeah.

Um, you know, we'll take it
as slow as you need.

- Thanks.
- [Jack] Yeah.

You probably have a lot of questions for…
for both of us, right?

- [laughs] Yeah. A few.
- [Mel] Yeah.

And you and Jack
should get to know each other.

- Might be a good idea. Yeah.
- [Jack] Yeah.

- Marley actually goes to Sacramento State.
- Really?

Yeah! Well, I'm obviously
taking some time off at the moment,

but I have a year left.

Well, I grew up down the street.
East Sacramento.

- No way!
- Yeah, my dad's a professor there.

- Actually, she's also from Utah, right?
- Yeah.

Yeah, Provo.

And, well, my family moved there
when I was 12.

And then I met my ex-boyfriend
in high school, and…

And he's the father of the baby,
but we didn't work out, so…

- [both softly] Right.
- [phone ringing]

[Marley] Anyway.

- Oh, it's Brie. I'm gonna take it.
- My sister.

Oh!

Sorry.

Hey! What's up?

Yeah. Oh… Oh no, I'm so sorry.

- Yeah, I'll be right there.
- [laughs nervously]

Um, Brie and Mike broke up.

- Yeah, she's kind of a mess.
- You should go. Sounds like she needs you.

- Yeah, okay. You guys…
- Okay.

- Chat.
- Bye, Mel.

Bye.

[laughs] So, um…

- Well, how's it going with the Airstream?
- Oh, it's great!

- Thank you, again, for letting me stay…
- Of course.

Uh, although, actually, the hot water's
been a little bit more lukewarm.

- Great!
- Yeah! Uh…

I mean, not "great" for you.
Great that I can fix it.

- I can fix it. Yeah.
- Great.

So I'll go grab my tools.

- Okay, awesome.
- Okay.

[Lizzie groaning]

[Lizzie yelling]

The contractions are ten minutes apart.

You can labor at home
till you're closer to five.

- [nervously] Okay.
- Hey. You are doing great.

No, I'm not! We're not ready!
I'm not ready! My parents aren't here!

I meant with your breathing.

- So you admit we're not ready.
- [Hope] I left your mom a message.

Who takes a cruise
right before their granddaughter is due?

Don't worry! We're here with you.

I thought you were supposed to be
with Muriel for her first day of chemo.

- She's got Jo Ellen and Lydie.
- Hope, that's important.

This is important too!
Now, what can I do to help?

- Maybe you can pack her birth bag.
- Yes! I can do that.

- [exhaling]
- What goes in a birth bag?

Robe, socks, slippers, toothbrush, um…
I also need my sports bra!

It might be too late
to squeeze in a workout.

For the birthing tub!

Of course.
Consider it packed and loaded in the car.

- We didn't install the car seat!
- I'll do it.

- No!
- We can do it at the clinic.

Baby doesn't need it
for the drive over, right?

Now, where's the box?

- We didn't install the car seat!
- [Denny] I'll get that.

[growls] Oh, this really hurts.

- Okay, Lizzie, let's try pacing, huh?
- Okay.

- That'll help your muscles relax. Denny?
- Yeah.

What was I doing?

Uh, the birth bag!

Oh, right! Yes! And I gotta call Muriel.

Why don't you go be with Muriel?

And I can get 'em packed up here
before we get to the clinic.

And Lizzie is in early labor.
She's a ways from having a baby.

I am?

Just keep pacing, dear.

Okay.

Lizzie, do you mind?

Go, be with Muriel.
I'm sure she could use the support.

All right, but call me when she's close.

Yeah. Hope, what was it
you wanted to talk to me about?

Sounded something
like about the investigation.

You know what? I don't even remember.
Just focus on Lizzie.

Good luck, Mom and Dad.

I'm gonna be a mom.

I'm gonna be a dad.

[uplifting music playing]

[Brie] It happened so fast.

I feel awful. He was so hurt.

I mean, there's no easy way out…
when you're so invested in someone.

Yeah. I mean, if it's not right,
you just can't force it.

[Brie] No, I know.

I think that's what I was doing
when I asked him to move in with me.

I just wanted to be
in a safe and healthy relationship

with a guy I knew wouldn't hurt me.

[Kaia] Yeah, of course!

You deserve that.

Or maybe I'm just not capable
of having a healthy relationship.

Brie, you are more than capable.

Well, you have to say that.
You're my sister now.

[Kaia] Well, I'm not.
So I don't have to say anything.

But Mel's right.

You've overcome a lot.

And… you are going to have exactly
the kind of relationship you want one day.

- Yeah.
- Right.

[chuckles] I think I just
need to focus on being alone.

And on work.

[breathes deeply]

Is there, like, a lot of work?
Because, um, self-care doesn't hurt.

[laughs] Thank you, Nurse Mel.
I will take that to heart.

But, yeah, no,
I have a couple of new cases, and, um…

And the DA's office wants to talk to me

about the restraining order
I filed for Charmaine.

Oh, have they found her yet?

No, not yet.

But Mike is on it.

- He'll find her.
- Yeah.

Well, I hope so.

[expectant music playing]

So, uh, Jack's Bar, is that yours?

[laughs] Yeah, sure is.

Best chili
and the coldest beer in the county.

Thanks.

Oh yeah?

[Jack] So they say.

- [exhales]
- So you're into photography, huh?

Yeah, I, uh, take landscapes mostly,
but some portraits.

Oh, cool.

Uh…

I'd love to see your work sometime.
I mean, if you don't mind.

Yeah, for sure. I'd love to show you.

And what about you?

I know you fix Airstreams,
and you build barns, and houses, but…

anything you can't do?

- Make pizza.
- Oh!

Yeah, it's terrible.

You know, being a Marine,
you learn to be pretty resourceful.

You were in the military?

Yep, 20 years.

I was a sergeant when I was discharged.

Got it.

So, did you believe
in what you were fighting for?

[laughs]

Belief is, uh…

You know, that was a little
above my pay grade.

[Marley] Huh.

My job was to follow orders
and do that to the best of my ability.

Right.

Yeah.

Well, you should, uh…
you should be good to go.

If you want to turn the tap on,
let it run.

- Oh, great.
- Here.

Oh, I'm good. Thank you, though.

[faucet running]

[exhales deeply]

Yeah, it's piping hot!

- Thanks.
- Cool.

Listen, if you're up for it,
I thought maybe we could go to the bar,

grab a bite, and keep chatting.

Oh, you know, I'm pretty tired, but…
maybe later?

Right.

Well, the chef makes a k*ller BLT.
I could bring you something back.

I'm vegan.

I'm sure he could
rustle you up something tasty.

Tell you what, you just…
you stay here, just put your feet up, and…

I'll bring you something back.

Okay. Thanks, Jack.

Yeah.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Doc] And here we are.

- Hi!
- [Doc] Hey.

Hey, Lizzie. Today's the day.
How are you feeling?

[exhales] Has anyone
heard from Aunt Connie?

Yes. Yes, she just called
and said that she's on her way.

- And contractions are six minutes apart.
- [Mel] Great.

Do you want the blinds open or closed?

I think closed
since I'm gonna be half naked soon.

Right. Privacy makes sense.

All the way closed,
or do you want some dappled light?

I don't care, Denny!

- Dappled. Dappled it is.
- [Lizzie scoffs]

And I need to finish
the birthing playlist.

Um, do you want to start mellow?
I'm thinking Bon Iver, maybe The Weeknd.

[Mel] Okay, Lizzie,
we're gonna start with your vitals.

- Okay.
- All right. And then, um, Denny?

Denny? After I'm done,
you can help her into her robe.

- Okay?
- [Victoria] Good morning, Mel.

Is today a good day for our interview?

Uh, you know what? Actually, not really.

I have a patient in labor,
and I'm covering the clinic, so…

- [Victoria] Fair enough.
- Yeah.

Dr. Mullins,
you seem to be here an awful lot

for a man who can't
practice medicine right now.

Well, see, Mel here is delivering
my great-grandchild today,

so I'm just here on Grandpa duty.

Ah! Congratulations.

- We'll find another time.
- [Mel] Okay, great!

All right. You are 118 over 80.

- So you're doing really good.
- [Lizzie] Okay.

Uh, Lizzie, I just have to run over
to the clinic and check on a patient.

- [Lizzie] Okay.
- But I will be right back.

I'll just stay here in case
they need anything. Non-medical.

Okay.

[indistinct chatter]

Michaels?

[sighs]

- My heart cannot take all this waiting.
- Your heart?

I'm the one who's about to have poison
pumped into my veins.

Oh, honey bunny, I'm sorry.

Sorry I'm late! Lizzie's in labor!

- [gasps] Oh my God.
- No!

It's still early.
Mel and Vernon are with her now.

Connie's headed to the clinic
to be there with her too,

and I am here for you.

- Thank you.
- How you feeling?

Better, actually, uh…

Yeah, thanks to you gals. I'm ready.

Okay, St. Clarice.

You mean St. Claire?

Yep. Follow me.

- I'm not ready.
- Yeah, you are. Come on.

We're coming too! Lydie, come!

[light music plays]

Come on!

- [speaker chiming]
- Why won't these speakers pair?

- [Lizzie groans softly] Oh…
- [Doc] There we go. That's it. Yes. Yeah.

- Hey!
- [Doc] You want to sit down?

- [Lizzie] Yeah.
- Okay.

Sorry about that.
How are your contractions coming?

Every five minutes now.

Great! Great!

How about we take a look at your cervix
and see how far along you are?

- Okay? Sounds good.
- Okay.

Denny, here, put this on over her legs.

Here.

Okay, that's my cue
to go put together the car seat.

I set out some fresh clean towels for you.

- [Mel] Great, thank you.
- [Doc] You got this.

- [inhaling]
- [Mel] All righty.

Let's take a look and see how we're doing.

Okay.

You're gonna feel some pressure,
so just take a deep breath.

- Okay.
- [Mel] Okay? Deep.

- [speaker chiming]
- [Mel] Doing okay?

- [Lizzie groans softly]
- [Mel] You're about seven centimeters.

So, at this rate, um,

it'll be a couple more hours
before you get to ten.

Oh.

[Mel] You're doing good.

- [sighs]
- [speaker chiming]

I hear somebody's having a baby!

You made it.

Oh, I wouldn't miss this for the world.

I remember when you were born.

You were the prettiest baby in the ward.

I'm so glad you're here.

Oh!

Wait a minute.
Where the devil are the stirrups?

Uh, Lizzie has decided to have
a water birth in our birthing tub.

Oh! Is that safe?

Can't the baby drown?

No, no, the baby doesn't breathe
on her own until we clear her lungs.

- Oh!
- [groaning] Oh, this one's intense.

Okay. Here. Why don't I help you up?

[Lizzie panting]

- [Mel] Okay.
- Oh!

Why don't you work on
some of those mantras we talked about?

[Denny] Okay.

- [exhales]
- [Denny] Just breathe.

- Repeat.
- [exhaling]

"I am calm."

Oh…

Okay.

I…

am…

- [rock music blaring]
- [gasps] What the hell?

- Sorry! Sorry!
- [music stops]

I just thought you'd need something
more aggressive to push to later.

Um, Denny, how about we just take
a break from the playlist for now, okay?

'Cause none of that really matters, right?

[Denny] Yeah.

The only thing that matters is being here

for Lizzie and your baby girl, right?

You know, there's only a few days in life
that you know that you're gonna remember.

This is one of those days.

- Right.
- Yeah.

{\an8}[Preacher] Yeah, so gimme, uh,
five pounds of white truffle butter

and a gallon of harissa oil.

All right, thanks, man.

- [Jack] Hey.
- Hey!

Since when do we need
five pounds of white truffle butter?

Oh, since we added
risotto to the menu, hmm?

- Hmm?
- It's the special of the week.

You really think our customers

are gonna pay $45
for white truffle risotto?

Ah, don't worry.
There's different price points.

We still got our venison chili,
barbecue brisket.

Good. I'm glad to hear it.

'Cause Bert and Charlie
won't stand for it if you don't.

- We can't get too fancy, you hear me?
- No, I hear you, man.

Hey look, I know you're busy,
but would you mind making me a vegan BLT?

What? That's not fancy!
And it's not for me.

It's for Mel's patient, Marley.

Well, you know, I don't exactly
have any vegan bacon on hand,

but I can whip up something
in that ballpark.

Okay, great. While you're doing that,
I'll make a Cobb salad for Mel.

Yo! Whoa, whoa, my friend.
Listen, I may be busy,

but I am not busy enough to let you
mess around in my kitchen.

Huh?

One Cobb salad for Mel
and one vegan surprise for Marley.

Coming up!

Thanks, buddy.

Hey, there, Shirley!

- Hi.
- What's going on?

Uh, well, last week I had a cold, and now…

[coughing] I have this cough
that won't go away.

And this morning
I started breathing funny, so…

Well, we'll take a look at it.

I'm gonna take a listen, okay?

You're not gonna examine me, Doc?

Well, uh, I can't.

Um, we haven't gotten around
to telling all the patients yet, but, uh…

my license has been
temporarily suspended, and--

- What?
- [Mel] Doc didn't do anything wrong.

And we are confident
that he will be back to it very soon.

Yeah, and meanwhile,
Mel will be seeing all the patients.

She'll take great care of you.
You have my word.

Okay.

Take a nice deep breath for me.

[inhales deeply]

You're definitely congested.

You know, given her lupus,
it could be pneumonia.

Oh, Doc, if it's pneumonia--

I can treat it, Shirley.
Doc, you should go.

[softly] Yeah.

Okay, take another deep breath, please.

[inhales deeply]

There is some crackling.

It's crackling. It's not grating?

Doc, you should go
before you get in trouble.

Yeah, look, just humor me, and I will.

Okay. Take another breath.

[breathes deeply]

It's grating.

That could be a pleural effusion
due to pneumonia.

- I'm going.
- Okay.

So, Doc is right.
It's probably a pleural effusion.

I'm gonna start you on some IV antibiotics
and see how you respond, okay?

- [Shirley] Okay.
- Okay.

[tense music playing]

[gasps]

Hey.

How'd you find me?

Your Mom's pretty chatty
when she's hanging out with Jim Beam.

Get out.

- Not until you give me back the money.
- It's not your money!

- No?
- It's mine and Hazel's.

Jimmy was supposed to get it
and give it to us.

Jimmy? So you've been working
with him this entire time, huh?

I wasn't lying when I said
I ended things with Jimmy.

- No, I'm not the liar here.
- I never lied to you once.

I heard you.

- What are you talking about?
- With Brie.

At Mel and Jack's wedding?

You're still in love with her.

And you always will be.
That's what you said, out loud!

- So you're spying on me now?
- I came to find you.

And there you were. With her.

I gave you a chance to tell me the truth.

And what did you want me to say, Lark?

That I'll never love you
the way I love her?

Is that what you want?

I was with you. I was with Hazel.

- I saw a future with us!
- [scoffs] So did I!

[angrily] Because you let me believe it.

- But you were just using me!
- No.

And Hazel! So you could prove to Brie
you're a better man than she thought!

That's not what I did!

Face it. I conned you
because you conned me first.

Because I conned you first? Really, Lark?

- [yells] Get out!
- [woman] Lark?

[Hazel] Brady!

[laughs] Hey.

- I missed you, Brady.
- [chuckles] Yeah.

Everything all right?

Yeah. We're…

We're fine. Thanks, Nancy.

I missed you too, kid.

Come here.

[gentle music playing]

[Shirley] Thank you, Mel.

[coughs lightly]

[sighing]

[Jack] Surprise.

How did it go with Marley?

Mmm, if I'm being honest, not great.

What? Why? What happened?

Oh, there's nothing in particular, just…

I don't know. We were chatting
about me, my service, and…

she just seemed to shut down.

[Mel] Hmm.

I don't know.
Maybe she just doesn't like me.

Impossible.

[chuckles] You're biased.

No. It is impossible.

- Oh, I think you're biased.
- [laughing] No!

Look, she's got a lot going on.

You know? And, um…

Phil and Darla just
turned her world upside down.

Yeah. I can't imagine
what she must be going through.

Yeah.

So don't imagine.

- Hm?
- Ask her.

Let her tell you how she feels.

Look, I just know how important this is.

Yeah.

- I don't want to mess it up.
- No.

Oh! Hey, Jack. Mel! I need you inside.

[Shirley coughing]

Shirley? Shirley!

[gasping] My chest.
I feel like I can't get in any air.

- It feels like I'm suffocating.
- Okay, I'm gonna put you on some oxygen.

There's fluid around her lungs.
She needs a chest tube.

I can't do a chest tube. I'm not licensed.

[Shirley coughing]

- Then I'll do it.
- No, you will not!

She needs to get to a hospital.

I'll call Bert. He can drive me.

Shirley.

If your oxygen saturation drops,

you're gonna need
an immediate intervention.

- I'm gonna call an ambulance for you.
- Bert and I can't afford it.

I know you're worried about the money,
but your life is more important.

[Mel] Okay.

Okay.

It's okay!

Try to relax and take
some slow, deep breaths.

- You're… You're gonna be okay.
- [gasping]

- It's all right.
- Okay. Yeah. It's Doc Vernon.

- [horse whinnying]
- What the hell?

- [horse whinnying loudly]
- [tense music playing]

Hey, Clay, what's going on?

[horse whinnying]

- [Marley] Jack!
- What happened?

[panting] I'm sorry!
I was taking pictures of the horses.

- I thought I closed the gate.
- Jack, tie him up.

I'm going after Sugar.

Okay, I'll follow you in the truck!
Come on!

[Clay] Yah!

What the hell are you doing?

It was my fault. I'm coming with you.

- You got your seatbelt on?
- Yep.

[Hope] How you doing under there?

Colder than a polar bear's ice hole.

[women laughing]

- Muriel!
- I said "ice hole."

- You know, where they go fishing.
- Oh.

And this cap, it's just…
God, it's ridiculous.

If it lets a lady keep her hair,
it's worth it.

It's not about the vanity.

I want to keep the hair because
I want to keep some sense of normalcy

while I go through all of this.

How long are you
supposed to wear that thing?

The entire time.

- Oh.
- [Muriel] And this strap.

Honest to God, if I could
feel my hands, I would fix it, but--

Can you? I'm so sorry.

Sweetie, please, it's okay.

- How's that? Is that better?
- [Muriel] Oh gosh, way better. Thank you.

Would you care for
a free inspirational bracelet?

No. No, thanks.
They've already given me seven.

Yeah, but I would love some more
ice packs, though, please, for my hands.

You'll need a cold cap assistant.

You'll have to wait
till they do their rounds.

- Oh.
- [scoffs]

Will Walt be stopping by?

Vernon said you haven't told him?

Look, I just want to spare him
from all of this.

Muriel…

You know what? I agree.

Sometimes you have to keep things
from people you love for their own good.

What kind of things?

Little things. Insignificant things.
Inconsequential things.

A medical condition
is not "inconsequential."

When I had my first diabetic episode,

Herb sat right beside me
in my hospital bed for a whole week.

I never thought I could love anyone
more than I did at that moment.

That's true love.

I'm gonna see
if I can flag down a cold cap assistant.

They should have passed through by now.

We'll bring card games next time.

Oh.

[door opens and closes]

[Lark] She's watching TV.

Is she okay?

She wants to be out here with you.

She didn't even notice all the yelling.
Thank God.

I remember my parents yelling.

It's all I remember them doing.

I don't want that kind of life for her.

She deserves better.

You really feel like I conned you?

You were always in love with Brie.

You let me fall in love with you,

in love with the life we could have had,
the life…

my little girl could have had.

You know, where I could put a roof
over her head and food on the table.

One where I could send Hazel
to a good school.

So she could become
more than I ever could.

You made me believe that was possible.

[scoffs]

You know, if that's not a con,
I… I don't know what is.

Keep it.

What?

The money.

Keep it. It's from my old life anyway.

I don't want to be that man anymore.

I want to make my own money
on my own terms.

Just promise me…
you'll use the money for Hazel.

To give her all the things,
to give her the kind of childhood

both me and you never had.

Are you serious?

If we can do one thing right, it's to
make sure she never ends up like us.

[heartwarming music playing]

He okay?

Yeah, I just gotta get him out
before he breaks a leg.

- [Sugar huffing]
- Whoa.

- [whinnies]
- Whoa! Easy, boy!

[Clay groans]

Oh sh*t.

Sugar! Whoa, whoa, whoa! See if he's okay!

Sugar!

- Clay!
- [Clay] I'm good.

[Marley] Yeah? Okay.

Jack!

[Jack] Okay, buddy.

Hey, buddy.

Hey, hey, hey.

Oh, you don't want to go down there.
No, no, no.

[whinnying]

Hey, hey, hey.
It's okay. It's okay. I got you.

- [whinnies]
- It's okay. It's okay.

I know. I know. I know.

It's okay.

- [Sugar huffs]
- [Jack] Shh, shh, shh. I got you.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, hey.

I got you. I got you.

That's a good boy.

Yeah, we're gonna get you home. All right?
You don't want to be down here.

Good boy.

Yeah, you got a little spooked, huh?

Yeah, I know what that's like.
I get spooked sometimes too.

Let's go home, huh? Come on.

Good boy. Good boy.

[peaceful music playing]

[exhales]

I saw the ambulance.

Is your patient going to be okay?

Oh, medically? Yeah. Yeah, she'll be okay.

Are you okay? [sighs]

No.

No. No, I am not.

For you to make that poor woman
take an ambulance with no insurance,

when she could have been helped here
in this clinic, that's inexcusable.

And it's gonna crush them financially.

- I didn't realize--
- Of course you didn't!

You are a detective, not a doctor.

You're looking for a criminal,
not a caregiver.

Have you got any idea what it takes
to run a small-town clinic like this?

Any idea?

I'm devoted to these people.

And not because they're my patients.

Because they're… they're my neighbors.

They're my friends. They're my family.

[angrily] And Shirley could have been
treated in this clinic.

And she damn well should've been!

Listen.

Dr. Mullins.

I don't hold some sort of
personal grudge against you.

I didn't bring the complaint. I wasn't
the one who ran roughshod in the middle--

I did not "run roughshod!"

I did the only thing I could
to save my patient's life.

And everybody but you and that b*stard
Hayes can clearly see that.

No, not everybody.

- What does that mean?
- I can't say.

But what I can say
is I'm just here to do my job.

Without prejudice.
If you've got a problem with that,

then I suggest you stay away
from the clinic until my job here is done.

Are we clear?
