[suspenseful music playing]

Get inside.

Where is Charmaine?

You tell me! Have you been
in contact with her this whole time?

What? No!

No, she just called
and asked me to meet her here.

You didn't think to call me?

- She wanted legal advice, Mike.
- What'd she say?

Why do I feel like I'm being interrogated?

Please just tell me what she said.

You tell me something first.
How did you know she was here?

Sheriff's office tracked her phone,

which she turned back on
apparently to call you.

Unfortunately…

[sighs] She made sure
that it couldn't be tracked any further.

- How did she sound?
- Uh…

Troubled. Like she was in danger.

- And that's all I know.
- If Charmaine said anything else to you…

- You think that I would hold out on you?
- [scoffs]

[Brie scoffs]

Look, somebody else
could have smashed her phone.

- Or maybe you scared her off, Mike.
- [laughs dryly]

[sighs] Look, Charmaine is my only
concern right now, all right?

Same here,
but it's not looking good for her.

A smashed phone
does not mean she k*lled Calvin!

Bloody fingerprints
were found at the crime scene.

Charmaine's fingerprints, Calvin's blood.

Well, in that case,
I have a job to do too.

And that's to be Charmaine's attorney.

Since when?

- Since right now.
- Okay.

Brie, this… this isn't a game.

This is a m*rder investigation.

Yeah, I know, it's a m*rder investigation.

And I'm sure you'll handle
that part just fine.

But since I can no longer
share attorney-client information,

I think it's best if we
stay out of each other's way, all right?

- Thanks.
- [Everett] Yep.

I can't tell you
how good it feels to be home.

Aww! I'm so glad you're feeling better.

But promise me not to overdo it, okay?

I'm not promising you anything.

Being cooped up in that hospital all week
gave me time to think.

It is time for me to get out there.

Ah, that's the spirit, Everett!

- [sighs] You know, you're not helping.
- Oh.

[Everett] How about
I take you both to lunch?

A post-wedding celebration.

Oh, wow, we would love that,

but, um, I actually have
a town hall meeting today.

And then, uh, later,

we are spending the afternoon
with a potential birth mother.

You found someone already?

Well, potentially. You know,
we're still just getting to know her.

- But we are cautiously optimistic.
- Yes.

Well, then, I'm cautiously optimistic
about becoming a grandfather.

Okay, let's just not get
ahead of ourselves.

Anyway, since we can't have lunch,

why don't you come
to the town hall meeting with me?

Ah, town halls aren't really my thing.

Come on, what happened to
getting back out there?

Plus, you can support Doc.

I mean, he did save your life,
like, twice.

Ooh, she got a point there, Everett.

[chuckling] All right, I'm sold.

Town hall it is. Give me five minutes.

Grandfather? Wow. This is moving fast.

No, you're right. We shouldn't get
ahead of ourselves with Marley today.

- Okay.
- Yeah.

- We're just gonna give it our best shot.
- Right.

I got a really good feeling about this.
And I'm here for you, okay?

- I have the best husband.
- Yeah, you do.

I was thinking maybe we could take Marley
to the flea market by the old train depot.

- Oh, that's a good idea.
- Yeah?

- Mmm-hmm.
- Okay, why don't I go pick her up?

And then you can come meet us
after the town hall.

Huh? Maybe we could pick up
a few things for a very empty new house.

[Mel] Mmm-hmm.

- Sound good? Okay.
- Sounds good.

See you later, Everett!

[chuckles lightly]

[uplifting music playing]

[Hope] So I pushed
the old agenda for today.

First, you need to go over what happened
with the suspension of your license,

then get into how the clinic
is going to run until you get it back.

Are you paying attention?
We need the town behind us on all this.

Yeah, I agree. It's a sham investigation,

and I'm gonna make damn sure
everyone knows about it.

Love the fighting spirit,
but if you're so confident,

why have you changed
your outfit three times?

[sighs heavily]

I'm not confident
about anything right now.

I mean, even though it's baseless,
it may not go my way.

And I don't deserve to be under this kind
of scrutiny just for doing my job!

I know that, and you know that.

We have to make sure the town knows it.

And I'd go with the sport coat.
It looks very handsome on you.

[chuckling]

- Thank you.
- Yeah, let's go get 'em, tiger.

I'll get my jacket. We can't be late.

Wish we could be there to support you.
We'll be thinking of you.

- Thank you.
- You've got this.

Well, I just don't like the idea
of leaving you two alone

on your first full day as parents.

- We should be fine.
- Yeah.

Koko doesn't do much but sleep anyway.

Yeah, well, if you need anything,
you just call me, okay?

- Okay.
- Thanks.

Bye.

We got this.

[loudly] Lizzie, what are
my father's ashes still doing out?

Bet you're having
a good laugh right now, aren't you?

Well, guess who's getting the last laugh?

[dog barking]

- Oh, hey, buddy. Hey, buddy. Hey, buddy.
- [phone ringing]

- Hey!
- [panting on phone]

- Hey, uh…
- [panting continues]

Why does it sound like you're dying?

Because I am.

[exhales heavily]

And you can blame your wife for that.

[laughs] Okay.

She suggested some self-care,

so I started running again
to clear my head.

- How's that working for you?
- Uh, well, the jury's still out.

[exhales] So, um…

I wanted you to hear it from me first.

I'm gonna be representing Charmaine
on this m*rder investigation.

- Did they find her?
- No.

Not yet,
but she reached out to me for help.

Sounds like she's the sheriff department's
number one suspect.

Ugh.

Damn it, I had a feeling
that's where this was headed.

I should've done more to help her.

Hey… I'm the one that told her

she'd be safe if she filed
a restraining order against Calvin.

So, now I really want to help her.

- Well, you talked to Mike?
- Uh, sort of.

I ran into him last night.

Um…

So do you know of a place called Juvy's?

Yeah, it's a dive bar
Charmaine used to work at years ago. Why?

Just a possible lead.

All right, Brie, whatever you're doing,
you be careful, you hear me?

I will.

[Marley] Hey, Jack!

Hey. Oh!

Yeah, and by the way, Mel and I might be
calling you for some legal advice soon.

I think we're getting pretty close on
a match with a birth mother.

[hopeful music playing]

That is…

That is the best news
I've heard in a long time.

Anything you need,
you can count on Auntie Brie.

You got it, Auntie Brie. Okay, bye.

- Hey.
- [Marley laughs]

- Ready?
- More than ready.

All right, let's go.

Huh.

Can I help you with something?

You Lenny?

Brady.

- Dan Brady, your new tenant.
- Brady, right.

You wanted to turn it into
a motorcycle shop.

Yeah, that's right.
I got big plans for the place.

I was hoping to fix it up right away.

- Is that gonna be a problem?
- No.

The roof might need a little love,
but building's in good shape.

- All right, good to know.
- Okay.

Hey, listen, Lenny, uh,

I'm a little tight on cash right now.

I was hoping you'd be able
to do me a solid

and use last month's rent
that Lark paid you

to cover the next month's rent instead?

No.

Last means last.

You can't pay,
I gotta find me a new tenant.

What? Hey, no. Uh…

No worries, all right? I'll…

I'll find the money.

- All right, thanks.
- [tense music playing]

Slow your roll, people!

- [woman] Are we losing the clinic?
- [man] Why'd Doc lose his license?

Is it true Shirley almost died?

Hey! Hey, we need order!

Save your questions.

The mayor has the floor.

First of all, nobody almost died.

Dr. Mullins is here
to address your concerns,

so let's all just take a breath
and hear him out.

Dr. Mullins.

Thank you, Madam Mayor.

Good morning, folks.

Let me start by clearing up
any rumors about Shirley.

I spoke with her this morning,
and she wanted me to tell you

that she is fully recovered,

and she is resting comfortably.

Now, as for having my license, uh,
temporarily suspended…

[sighs] …it took us all by surprise.

No one more than me.

I wish I could explain this more fully,

but the medical details of this case
are strictly confidential.

But, regardless, I assure you,

the charges against me have…
have absolutely no merit.

From my time in combat in the military

to serving shift after shift
in overwhelmed emergency rooms,

I learned how to make
life-saving decisions on the spot.

And having done that here,
I'm now accused of being reckless.

Reckless?

No.

No.

I stand by my actions.

Now, I'd like to ask Mel Sheridan
to talk you through our plans.

Okay, so basically,
the clinic will continue to run as usual.

I can do 95% of what Doc can do,

and if there's anything that I can't do,
I will refer you to someone who can.

But I just want you all to know

that you will be as well taken care of
as you always have been.

- [man] Unless you're in the 5%.
- [citizens murmuring]

I'm sorry to interrupt.

I'm Dr. Oliver Hayes,

Chief Medical Officer
at Grace Valley Hospital.

And 5% is a significant portion
of this community.

Shirley Gordon was part of it.

How many of you here
could fall into that percentage?

- [Hope] You son of a--
- Down.

I don't know how the investigation
into Dr. Mullins' actions will play out,

but I do know having access to reliable,

competent healthcare is important
for every person in this town.

[scoffs] Competent? Are you serious?

Dr. Hayes, we are in the middle
of addressing the medical needs

of our community.

And if you have something to say,

you should choose a more appropriate
time and place.

Of course, my apologies.

I just wanted to make sure
that your community was aware

that Grace Valley Hospital
can ensure all of their needs will be met.

You are missing the point, Dr. Hayes.

You're not a member of this town,

and you can't just walk in here
and hijack our forum.

[man] Why not let the man speak?

[woman] I wouldn't mind hearing
what Grace Valley has to offer.

I have brochures here that outline
the services that Grace Valley offers.

I'm just suggesting you consider

whether it's time for a change.

[citizens murmuring]

Let me just say…

being your doctor
has always meant more to me

than just taking care
of your medical needs.

It is personal to me.

And it's for you…

knowing that there's someone
in your corner,

someone you can trust.

It seems like maybe some of you
have lost faith in me.

But I have not lost faith in you.

But until this investigation
is completed, uh…

my hands are tied.

[citizens murmuring]

Doc, wait.

I am so sorry.
That was completely uncalled for.

Look, Mel. I don't want you
to worry about this, okay?

Now, just, uh…

We'll just talk on Monday, okay?

[Doc] Oh, hi, there.

[Everett] Hey.

- Hey.
- Are you okay?

Um…

[sighs] No, I don't think so.
I'm gonna go spend some time with him.

Well, you have plans for the afternoon.

I know, but this is…
It's really important.

Well, so is this opportunity
for you and Jack.

I know how meaningful it is for you both.

Why don't you let me go deal with Doc?

- [cheerful music playing]
- Really?

[laughs] Well, yeah. I mean…

why not?

Well, I mean, what are you gonna do?

I'll think of something.

You, um… You go.

Okay.

Hey, Doc, wait up.

Hey, I was thinking, I could really
use your help with something.

You have a few minutes?

[cheerful music continues]

Yeah. Yeah, sure.

Great.

[bell tolling]

[train whistle blowing]

[upbeat music playing in background]

- Hey! Hey, Marley.
- [Jack] Oh, hey.

- [Marley] Hi.
- [Mel] Hey, honey.

How'd the town hall thing go?

- Um, not great.
- Oh.

- I'll tell you about it later.
- Okay.

What you guys been up to?

Oh, you know, just solving the world's
problems and stuffing our faces.

- You want some?
- Oh yes.

Jack refuses to partake.

Because I told you
I devoured an entire tier

of leftover wedding cake last night.

Excuses, excuses.

- It's true!
- Well…

Hey, thanks for making the time
to hang out today, guys.

You know, got a big decision to make,
and I wanna get it right this time.

No pressure.

[laughing]

- Hmm.
- [Marley] All right.

Oh God! Okay, I can't! I can't!

[laughing] You're too cute!

So, does it feel different
now that you're married?

Mmm, well, it's only been a few days,
but, yeah, I think it does.

It's better.

- [Mel] Yeah.
- Yeah? Better how?

I don't know, it just makes forever feel…

more real.

- Yeah. You're stuck with me now.
- Good.

- That's how it should be.
- [chuckles] Yeah, come here!

- Just glue you to me.
- Oh, Jack!

It looks just like Sugar.

Mmm!

Yeah, it… it kinda does.

Sure! Should we get it?

- What? Oh! Uh…
- Hmm.

Uh, you know,
I want to be a team player, but, um…

[Jack] What? Content over style.

I mean, it has sentimental value.

- To who?
- [Marley] Ah. All right.

No, no, no. The decision
to purchase must be unanimous.

- So, onward.
- Yes.

We do have a lot of empty wall space,
I'm just saying.

- [Doc] All right.
- [both grunting]

- [Everett] Okay. You got it?
- [Doc] Yep.

Okay.

- All right.
- [Everett] All right. Okay.

- [grunts] Here we are.
- [Doc] Got it?

- Where do you want it?
- [Everett] Just to the right.

[Doc] Right over here?

- [Everett] Yep. Perfect.
- Yeah.

[Doc] Good.

[exhales]

[Doc] Wow, did you make all these?

Well, I've spent a lot of time out here.

Um…

Well, um…

if that's all you needed,
I guess I'll just, uh, head back.

Why don't you take a break? Want a beer?

Did Mel put you up to this?

Ask you to babysit me
because of this morning?

Because what I certainly don't need
is yours or anyone else's pity right now.

Good, 'cause I'm not offering any.

I just thought you'd appreciate
the distraction.

I'm doing just fine. Thanks.

You know, when I'm working out here, it…
takes my mind off things.

If I'm building something from scratch,
whether it's a…

a chair or a table, it…

I don't know,
it puts it all in perspective.

- [Doc] Yeah.
- Simplifies things.

[wistful music playing]

Did you make that one?

Yeah! Yeah, sure did. [chuckles]

[Doc chuckling]

Ah.

- [laughs]
- Can I get you that beer?

Please.

Yeah.

[Doc exhales]

[baby crying]

Okay, a hunger cry starts soft
and builds to a strong rhythmic cry.

This is more insistent than rhythmic.
What about an insistent cry?

"A wet diaper could be the cause
if the cry is insistent."

I just changed her. Next.

Hey, how'd it go?

I don't wanna talk about it.

It was a disaster! But I'm not
gonna bore you with the details.

Let's just say we are in
full-on damage control mode.

- [baby crying]
- Oh.

What's up with Miss Fussy Face?

Ugh, we have no idea.
We've tried everything. She's just cranky.

I think I'm gonna try
and get her down for a nap.

Good, then you can come back and help me--

I am gonna try and go down
for a nap with her.

[crying continues]

Maybe now's a good time
to hire that temp you guys talked about.

I don't have time to hire a temp,
I've got too much to do!

If you hired a temp, you'd have more time.

Real catch-22. Hmm.

Okay, call the temp agency in Clear River
and see who can meet me this aftern--

- Fine! I'll call.
- [crying continues]

Be nice for Mommy and Daddy.

- You heard the lady.
- [crying continues]

[Kaia] Brady!

- Hey.
- Hey.

- Looks like you made it back in one piece!
- Yep.

You find Lark?

Yeah.

And?

And… I let her keep the money.

- What?
- It was the right thing to do, okay?

For Hazel.

Hmm. Well, that can't have been easy.

It was not, and now I am officially broke.

But definitely going to heaven!

I guess.

Listen, I know I don't got a shot
at getting on payroll

until I get my certification,

but is there anything else
I can do around the firehouse?

You know, earn a few extra bucks?

Yeah, look, I'd love to be able to help,

but there's just not an extra dime
in the budget right now.

I mean, I'll ask around,
see if I hear of anything.

- Thanks.
- Yeah.

I, uh, just want to get the shop
up and running, you know?

- Help take my mind off of--
- Brie?

Yep! [laughs]

[sighs] I dropped a lot on her
at the wedding,

and we haven't talked since,
and she's with Mike, and--

[exhales] So, you don't know?

Know what?

Oh man.

Brie and Mike broke up.

What?

- Was it because of me?
- Not because of you.

- I should go talk to her.
- That is not--

I don't think that's a good idea.

She said she didn't wanna see me?

Look, not in those exact words, okay?

But Brie is working through
a lot right now.

Just, if you engage with her at all,

just let it be as friends.

Yeah.

[scoffs] I'm not so sure
us being friends, uh, is gonna work.

Then maybe just stay clear.

Look, me and the guys are grabbing a bite.
Come and join us.

I can't. Gotta stay on the job hunt.

- Next time.
- Yeah.

Never really been anywhere, you know?
So, after I graduate, I want to travel.

- [Mel] Oh, nice.
- Yeah.

Maybe I'll end up living
in a little village in Spain

or on the coast of Italy somewhere.

- Italy! You hear that?
- [Marley] What?

- Did he pay you? Isn't that--
- [Marley] No!

We're having an ongoing debate as to
where we're gonna spend our honeymoon.

- And Italy is a very good possibility.
- Uh-huh, and so is Hawaii!

Oh, no, Hawaii is amazing. That is where
I would want to go if I got married.

- No!
- [phone ringing]

Look, Italy would be good too.
It's just it's a tough decision.

- Honeymooning.
- You gotta take that?

No.

No! It's just the adoption agency
calling about this other couple.

Oh.

But it can wait, 'cause I'm…
I'm with you two right now.

Oh, this is a classic! May I?

Huh!

You know, Mel's mom
was really into photography too.

- Oh yeah?
- Yeah, she had a great eye.

- Right, babe?
- Yeah.

Smile!

Okay.

Oh, that one gets Japanese
sweet potato fries, not cornbread.

Right, right, right. My bad.

Wow, I have never seen it like this
on a Saturday before.

Not at this hour. Breakfast is over.
Lunch hasn't even started yet.

Yeah, I think that's called brunch.

Brunch?

Yeah, the thing between
breakfast and lunch.

Yes, I know what brunch is, Hannah.

We've just never had it before. Thank you.

- [Kaia] Hey.
- [Preacher] Hey!

Um, heading back to the station.
It is packed out there.

Yes, we do brunch now. Who knew?

Hey, might be time to start
thinking about getting some help.

I know Brady's looking for work.

He's going through a tough time.
He could use the cash.

Yeah, you know what?
That is too much drama.

Don't get me wrong,
I like Brady, but, you know,

with this opportunity with the new menu,
it's just too important to risk it.

Well, what about behind the bar?
Sexy new menu, sexy new bartender.

What, you think…
You think Brady's sexy? Since when?

Since… I don't know. Since I met him.
He's a good-looking guy.

Huh!

Wow, I never knew
you thought of him that way.

[laughing]

What's so funny?

Are you jealous?

Of Brady? No!

[laughing] Please.

No! No, no, you don't.
I am trying to work here. Mmm-mmm. No.

- That's adorable.
- [sighs]

Will you at least think about
giving Brady a job?

If I say yes, do you promise
to never refer to him as "sexy" again?

Yes.

- I'll think about it. Mmm-hmm.
- Mmm.

- Back to work we go.
- Yeah.

- Love ya.
- You too.

Brady.

[rock music playing in background]

[bartender] Help ya?

Uh, yeah, actually,
um, I'm looking for a friend.

Were you here working last night?

[scoffs] I work here every night.
I own the place.

Ah! Well, it is nice to meet you.
I'm Brie.

- What's your friend's name?
- Charmaine Roberts.

A cop was here last night
asking after her.

I'm gonna tell you
the same thing I told him.

I don't know anything.

Right, well, see,
Charmaine could be in danger.

So if you've seen anything
or if you've heard anything,

- I really need to know, please.
- You a cop too?

I'm her lawyer.

And I'm someone
who's very worried about her, and…

the two babies she's trying to protect.

I always liked Charmaine.

How she got mixed up
with that Calvin guy, I have no idea.

Good riddance to the scumbag.

So she was here?

She wasn't herself. She was, uh…

Couldn't hardly hold it together.
She was scared.

Did she say why?

Feels that somebody is following her.

She was looking for a new ID,

and I used to know a guy
that did that kind of thing.

Okay.

Do you have any idea…
any idea where she could be? Please.

I don't.

You better go.

[tense music playing]

- I'm sorry, can I help you?
- Whoa, easy, lady.

We got a problem here?

No problem.
I was just gonna ask the pretty lady

if she knew anything about
what happened to my buddy Calvin.

She doesn't.

Seriously?

Are you following me?

I've got an undercover guy inside
in case Charmaine shows up again,

which she clearly won't do if she sees
me and you out here chit-chatting.

You are running the risk
of interfering in this investigation.

I know she's innocent, Mike, okay?
She's running because she's scared.

And I know how that feels.

Look, I appreciate
how far you're willing to go for her,

but you might be letting
your past with Don color your judgment.

My past is helping me understand
what Charmaine might be going through.

Are you allowing our past to cut out
her only advocate from the picture?

You're right. That was unfair. I'm sorry.

Look, for the record, I…

want to believe she's innocent too,
but I need proof.

Well, Charmaine thinks
she's being followed.

You learned that just now?

Yeah, from the owner just now.

That's all I've got.

Thanks.

Okay, I'm gonna check surveillance
from surrounding businesses,

see if she was being tailed.

And I will let you know what I find.

- Okay.
- [wistful music playing]

Thank you.

Thank you.

Creedence Clearwater at the Forum, '71.

Ooh!
Well, Rolling Stones, San Francisco, 1972.

- At Winterland?
- Mmm-hmm!

I was there too.

- No!
- [both laughing]

Wow.

Yeah, the first rock and roll song
I ever learned to play on the piano,

"Wild Horses."

Oh, that's one of the greatest
love songs ever written.

Oh yeah.

I did not know you played piano.

Well, "play" is a misnomer.

Well, you ever wanna jam,
you know where to find me.

[chuckles] Okay.

[blows]

Hey, congrats on becoming
a great-grandfather.

- Oh.
- Mel mentioned it to me this morning.

How's that feel?

Oh, it's like I've been given
a second chance.

Well, I can relate
to making up for lost time.

Yeah.

[clears throat]

With everything that happened,
why did you stay in Virgin River?

Well…

I tried to leave more than once,

kept coming back.

- Yeah.
- You ever think of leaving?

No.

No, no, Virgin River, that's…
that's my home.

Hope and… the people.

The clinic.

[wistful music playing]

It's gonna work out, Doc.

Yeah.

- Thank you for coming over so quickly.
- Well, thank you for your consideration.

Being assistant to the Mayor of
Virgin River would be a dream come true.

- Temporary assistant.
- Well, we'll see about that.

[both chuckling]

Have you ever worked
for a public servant before?

I was senior assistant
to the junior deputy clerk

at the Humboldt County Records Department,

and they say I was vital
to the Vital Records Division. Really.

- Junior assistant.
- Senior assistant.

- Right.
- Mmm-hmm.

Um…

- Hypothetically, um…
- [baby crying in background]

Um, hypothetically, how would you
go about getting the town to back,

say, a mayoral proposition?

Simple, you just make them think
what you want is what they want.
