[gentle music playing]

Here you go, buddy.

[sighs]

[Mel on recording] Hey, babe, it's me. Um…

Obviously, you didn't
come home last night.

Look, I'm… I'm really sorry how I left.

- [g*n fires]
- [woman screams]

[tense music playing]

- Marley!
- [g*n fires]

Marley!

Marley!

It was a rattler.
It was headed right for her.

[Marley] I had no idea.

God, thank you.

What's with the g*n, Clay?

Just k*lling snakes.

All right, anybody has a g*n on this farm,

I need to know about it.

Yes, sir.

- Thanks.
- Mmm-hmm.

[pensive music playing]

- [dogs barking]
- [sinister music playing]

- [Mel panting]
- [barking continues]

[man] Diesel! Rambo! Heel!

[exhales]

Hi, are you Dale Crowley?

Um…

My name is Melinda Sheridan.
I'm a nurse practitioner.

I work for Dr. Mullins.

Since when does Doc send nurses
to take his house calls?

Um, Doc is taking some time
away from the clinic right now.

- How long?
- I don't know.

It could be a while.

Well, then we'll fend for ourselves.

You can leave the same way you came in.

Look, why don't I just
take a look at your wife?

If you don't like what I have to say,
I'll leave.

[dogs barking]

- [sighs] Okay. Okay, look, look.
- [Dale] Heel!

Obviously, I can't force myself in,

but the longer your wife goes
without medical attention,

the greater chance
she has of complications.

Hell are you talking about, complications?

She's got a stomach bug is all,
just needs some meds.

You told our clinic assistant
that she was having abdominal pain

and a fever for several days.

That could be…
That could be more than a stomach bug.

[sighs] Listen, I know you don't know me,

but Doc trusts me
to take care of this town.

[Dale sighs]

Make it quick.

- [dogs whimpering]
- [tense music playing]

[calmly breathing]

Who's that?

She works with Doc Mullins.

- But we said we weren't--
- I know what we said, Anne.

This is his nurse. Just…

let her take a look at you, okay?

Okay.

[groans softly]

Okay.

[Mel] Okay,
I'm gonna take a look at something.

It's gonna be a little bit uncomfortable,

but it's gonna help me figure out
what's going on, okay?

Okay.

Okay, let me know
if this hurts right here?

- Yeah?
- Mmm-hmm.

- It hurts?
- [inhales sharply]

Okay. Okay.

Okay, your wife doesn't have
a stomach bug. It's appendicitis.

- You sure?
- I'm as sure as I can be without a scan.

Hey, what are you doing?

I'm calling an ambulance.
We have to go to the hospital.

Like hell we do!

You don't understand.
Appendicitis requires immediate surgical--

[Dale] No!

[racking]

You don't understand.

We're not going anywhere.

Now give me the phone.

- [dark music playing]
- [dogs barking in background]

Hey, can I ask you a favor?

Sure.

If it's too much,
you can totally say no. I, um…

I've just been thinking about
something I could give you guys

that you could maybe,
you know, share with him someday?

And since he's gonna
be growing up on a farm, um…

When I was a little girl, I used to love
picking apples with my grandparents.

So I was thinking we could maybe plant
an apple tree somewhere on the property.

You know, just as a reminder.

Of me.

[softly] Yeah, of course. I mean…

How about we…
plant it right outside his bedroom?

[hoarsely] That way all he has to do is…
look out the window, you know?

Yeah, that, uh…

That sounds perfect.

All right, I'm gonna go do
one last sweep of the house

before the social worker gets here.

Yeah!

- Wish us luck.
- Good luck.

Thanks.

[heartwarming music playing]

I'm not so sure
Muriel's gonna have much of an appetite.

Usually the first few days
after chemo are very tough.

If she can't eat them now,
she can freeze them for later.

You know, I'm just saying, brace yourself.

- She could be struggling.
- Aww.

[Muriel] Walt! I can't take it anymore!

[Muriel and Walt laughing]

Hi!

Sorry. It's just that Walt
was just telling me this hysterical story.

Please come in!

[laughing] Hi! Come on in.

- What a nice surprise!
- [chuckling] Hi! I know, I know.

Come in.

Oh my goodness.

We're just so glad
to see you doing well. Yeah.

Thank you.

I have to admit that Walt is making
this whole awful ordeal more bearable.

Last night, I took one of his
marijuana gummies for the nausea.

- [Doc chuckles]
- [laughing] And we, uh…

we watched My Fair Lady.

We laughed our way through My Fair Lady.

Why, General Booth,
I didn't peg you for the type.

When I was going through chemo,
it was a lifesaver.

- It still can be once in a while.
- And it also makes you extra frisky.

Oh!

[tittering] Mmm-hmm!

Just in case
you might want to, uh, indulge.

- Thanks, but no thanks, Muriel.
- Well, let me just take a look.

You're not serious, are you?

Well, you know, it's been a while. I mean…

- [Muriel] Ah!
- It's been a very long while.

I was, uh,
planning on surprising you today

with a trip to our favorite place.

And it might be nice to just bring
a couple of these along with us.

[Muriel] Now, hold on.

How on earth do I not know
about your "favorite place"?

He's talking about the hedge maze
at the botanical garden.

It's where we had our first kiss.

So, uh, what do you say, Hope?

I think this time away from work
is starting to go to your head.

[chuckling] Ah…

But if Muriel says
it makes you extra frisky,

guess we're taking the shuttle.

[all laughing]

[phone ringing]

- Hi!
- [Denny] Hey.

- How's it going over there?
- Oh, you know, it's going.

About to put Koko down for a nap.

Did you sleep any better last night?

Yeah, slept like a rock.

Guess the bassinet's staying
on your side of the bed tonight.

Well, as long as my girls
are getting some sleep, it can stay there.

How's work?

Good. Uh, Mel's out on a house call
right now, so it's pretty quiet.

Which is great, 'cause I really need
to dial in on this practice test.

Well, I won't keep you, then.

But text me when
you're on your way home, okay?

Of course. Love you.

Love you too.

[Koko fussing]

[softly] Hey.

- Hey.
- [Koko cries]

[Koko crying]

Okay.

[apprehensive music playing]

- [device whirs]
- What's that for?

I'm trying to raise her blood pressure.

If I can't, she could pass out
from hypotension.

[sighs] We really
need to get you to a hospital.

You deaf, lady, or just stupid?
We told you we ain't going.

- Why not?
- 'Cause you can't trust them hospitals.

Why?

They want you to get sick,
so they can get you in their system and…

make you sicker.

Long time ago, we swore
to take care of each other

and never let them folks
mess with us again.

But you called the clinic.

Doc gets us, so we respect him.

[Anne grunts]

[groaning softly]

[sighs] Okay, fine. I understand.

I will, um…
I'll try to raise your fluid level

and see if that can stabilize your BP.

[groaning]

- What's wrong?
- Okay, don't move. I'll be right back.

Where are you going?

- I have to go to my car.
- [Dale] What for?

To get a portable ultrasound machine

and make sure that
your wife's appendix didn't just burst!

So, you do anything, uh, fun last night?

Yeah, I did.

Great. Good for you.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Okay.

Hi.

- Hi, can I help you?
- Hi.

Mike Valenzuela.
Head of Major Crimes, Humboldt County.

This is Charmaine Roberts' attorney,
Brie Sheridan.

Uh, Grant Pope.

This is your salon?

Yes! Uh…

Do you have any news, or…

She is a person of interest
in the m*rder investigation

of the father of her twins.

Wait, you don't…
you don't actually think that she did it?

[Brie] I don't.

No, but we're doing everything we can
to find her and ask her ourselves.

So maybe you can help?

Of course. Anything you need.

- When did you see her last?
- Uh, well…

She came in to get some supplies
for her friend's wedding.

Did you notice anything
out of the ordinary?

[slowly] No.

Well, except you know the twins' father
has been harassing her, right?

- Yeah. We're aware.
- Yeah, okay.

Well, she was concerned that he was
still involved with some bad people.

I mean, I bet whoever k*lled him
was probably involved in that, yeah?

Anyone that you might have seen
or that she might have mentioned?

No, not that she mentioned.

- If you hear anything, you'll…
- We will let you know.

- Thank you.
- Thank you.

Thanks.

Actually, I was here that day,
and I did see something.

Okay.

There was this guy
poking around the salon.

She was worried about him.

What did he look like?

I think he was white,
um, mid-twenties, brown hair.

- He was wearing a cowboy hat.
- Did he come in?

No. He just walked up and down the block.

Charmaine thought he was following her.

Did you happen to notice
what kind of car he was driving?

I'm pretty sure
it was an old pickup truck?

[phone ringing]

I've gotta grab that.

All right. Well, if either of you remember
anything else, please give me a call.

- Of course.
- Thank you.

Thanks.

Maybe this…

cowboy is who
Charmaine was running from at Juvy's.

He could've k*lled Calvin
and threatened Charmaine in some way.

We need to find him before he finds her.

A cowboy hat?
That's not much to go off of.

How are we supposed to find this guy?

Well, if he was mixed up with Calvin,
we know someone who might help.

Yep. Let's get going.

[sarcastically] Cool.

Your smoke detector
looks A-okay, Mrs. Clemons.

Remember I changed
the batteries last week?

And you're sure they're still working?

- [alarm beeping loudly]
- Yeah!

Oh, Chief Bryant, you are a godsend.

- That's what I'm here for.
- Um…

Can I, um, interest you two in a slice
of Bundt cake for your trouble?

- You know, Brady and I really--
- I'd love some.

Make yourselves at home!

It'll be out in a jiffy.

- What do you got against Bundt cake?
- No, the Bundt cake is great.

She's very sweet, but…
she calls me out here every other week.

There's never anything wrong
with the smoke detector,

or the water heater, or the stove.

She'll just want to…
talk about her herb garden,

her penny stocks,
and her grandson Lucas Aaron.

But how's the Bundt cake?

[sighs loudly]

It's not like we have
anything to do anyway.

[Kaia] Mmm-hmm.

So how'd the rest of dinner go last night?

- It was weird.
- Yeah?

Yeah, Jamie and Preacher
just talked about food the whole night?

- Oof.
- Kinda felt like I was

third-wheeling with my own boyfriend?

Anyway, was your night any better
than mine? How was moving on?

Uh…

It was…

Hollow? Empty? Emotionally unfulfilling?

- [flatly] It was nice.
- You gonna see her again?

No, probably not.

- Oh, wow!
- [titters]

Now we're talking!

Only the best for Virgin River's finest.

- Thank you, Ms. Clemons.
- You're welcome.

- Ha!
- [Brady] Mmm!

So… Lucas Aaron has a new girlfriend.

[both] Mmm!

[beeping]

[line ringing]

[on recording] Hey,
you've reached Mel Sheridan.

If this is an emergency…

[keypad clicking]

- [alert swooshes]
- [car approaching]

- Hey, you must be Barbara.
- Yes!

- Jack Sheridan.
- Hi.

Hey.

Lovely property.

Thank you! Thank you.

Is your wife inside?

No, uh, she's just
wrapping up with a patient,

but I'm expecting her any minute, so…

I could give you a tour
of the property in the meantime if you…

Sure!

- Okay, follow me. Okay.
- Yeah.

- [indistinct chatter]
- [music playing faintly in background]

You should just
blow these walls out, Preach.

Double your dining room space.

Oh, wow. Blow out walls.

I mean, Jack built this place
with his bare hands.

There is a story
behind every plank of wood.

I get it, but what I'm envisioning

would make everything people love
about Jack's Bar bigger and better,

and it would give every seat in the house…
a view of the river.

Yeah. Yeah, river views would be nice.

I know you gotta talk to Jack,
but think about it.

I gotta go. I'll be back.
You gonna be here?

Yeah! Yeah, these days, I always am.

- All right. I'll see you soon.
- Okay.

Can you believe that?

The gall of that woman. Ooh, I swear.

Oh, we have to tell Kaia.

Oh, I don't know
if we should get involved.

If Chip's ex was cozying up to him
like that, what would you think?

Susan wouldn't dare.

[huffs]

- Oh, you're right. Kaia needs to know.
- Mmm-hmm.

- Kaia needs to know what?
- [all gasp]

[laughs] Sorry, ladies.
I didn't mean to scare you.

What are you talking about?

[Connie sputters]

We just saw Jamie kissing Preacher.

Uh, what?

They were chatting over by the pool table,
then she just leaned in and kissed him.

On the cheek, but still, you know, it's…

That doesn't bother you?

That Preacher's friend
kissed him on the cheek? No.

- Not really.
- [Jo Ellen] But they're not just friends!

Now, I don't know for sure,

but I heard Preacher nearly moved
to San Francisco to be with her.

[pensive music playing]

I did not know that!

Um, yeah, excuse me, ladies.

I really appreciate you having my back,
but I'm sure it's nothing.

Well, maybe it was and maybe it wasn't,

but if some hot toddy
was cozying up to Nick like that,

I would make my presence felt
before that nothing becomes a something.

I will keep that in mind.

Uh, Chief Bryant.

I'm sorry, you said how many acres?

I know reception is spotty out here,
but is it unusual

for your wife
to be so unreachable by cell?

Uh, you know… yes.

Actually, it is… a bit unusual.

Um…

She's actually running the…
town medical clinic at the moment.

I mean, just on a temporary basis, but…

it could be an emergency or…

something.

You know, is there any way
you might be able to do this later today?

'Cause in the meantime, I could offer you…

the best lunch you have ever had

at a local joint,
just got written up in Food & Wine.

What do you say?

- Okay.
- All right.

See ya!

Hey, Denny, it's Jack. Listen, uh…

do you have any idea where Mel is?

[indistinct clattering]

All right, so it's 40,000 acres
down at Yosemite.

CAL Fire needs bodies tomorrow
for containment.

Said I'd see who I could spare.

Let them know, yeah?

No can do. Kid's birthday.

Wife'll k*ll me!

Yeah, well, I don't got a wife or kids.

And I could use the distraction.

Hey, this is not a distraction.

This is dangerous. Think about it.

Okay, I'll let you know.

All of you, let me know end of day.

Hey. How about you, huh?
You gonna head up?

Yeah, um, I don't know.
I was gonna ask Preacher about it,

but he's so busy at the bar, he probably
wouldn't even notice I was gone.

Things okay with you two?

Yeah!

But…

Hey, what do you know about Jamie?

- Preacher's friend?
- Yeah.

Not much, why?

Do you know if he almost
left Virgin River to be with her?

Wow, I don't know.
That's news to me. Really?

- I heard it from Jo Ellen.
- Oh.

What's going on, Chief?
Big man's ex back in town, huh?

Oh my God. Did I ask for your input, Roy?

[laughs] I'm not trying
to come in between anything.

I'm just offering a little bit
of male perspective.

- Male perspective.
- This should be good.

Look, us men,
we're pretty simple creatures, right?

So, if you think
that there's more to this story…

there probably is.

[Brady] Roy?

Shut up.

- Don't listen to him.
- Yeah.

[Brie] Hey.

Um…

You got a sec?

[Mel] It looks
more like a tear than a rupture.

- That sounds like good news.
- Well, it's not.

You see that right there? That's the tear.

This is the abscess around the appendix,
which is the bigger problem.

[sighs] It guarantees
that her appendix will burst.

And what happens then?

Well, unless we get you
to a hospital for an emergency drain,

you will go septic, and you will die.

No, no, no. There's gotta be another way.

No. Dale, we have to go to a hospital.

We don't have to do anything, damn it!

[tearfully] People go in there,
and they don't come out!

[sternly] It happened to our daughter.

[somber music playing]

I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry to hear that.

What was her name?

Look, I know what it's like
to lose a child, and I know…

I know you don't want to go back there.

If you don't get this abscess drained
before it's too late…

[Dale] You do it, then.

What?

What? I--

No. No, I'm not-- I can't. I can't do it.

I'm not trained for that procedure.
I'm not a surgeon.

Today you are.

[dogs barking]

Someone's here.

[barking continues]

- Stop right there.
- [dogs snarling]

Look, I hate to ask.

- But all we need to know is…
- [laughs]

- What's so funny?
- No, it's just, um…

When I come to you for help,
I get punched in the face.

But you come to me--

I didn't punch you
because you asked for help.

I punched you
because you slept with my girlfriend.

- Oh yeah?
- [Brie] Ex-girlfriend.

Who is standing right here and is trying
to help a woman on the run with two kids.

So can we please just put all this aside?

- For their sake?
- Yeah.

We're looking for a guy in his twenties.

He wears a cowboy hat.

He drives a pickup truck.
He might've had beef with Calvin?

Yeah.

Yeah, I don't know his real name,
but there is a guy,

used to work for Calvin,
wore a cowboy hat.

- We called him Wild Bill.
- [Mike] Uh-huh.

What's his deal?

Thug for hire.
Did a little bit of everything.

Last I heard, he was moving stolen goods
out of a pawn shop in Eureka.

Hey. This guy's got a reputation, okay?

He's trouble.

but this isn't gonna work out for me.

It's just too complicated.

So, let's just

go our separate ways
and wish each other luck, okay?

Mike! Please.

I did a terrible thing.

And it kills me
that I caused you so much pain.

Okay, and I know.

I know that working with me
is probably just a reminder

of all of the bad things
that have happened between us.

But, Mike,

don't you dare
cut me out of this investigation.

Charmaine is out there, somewhere.

She's out there because…
I didn't do enough to protect her.

I let her down.

Like I let you down.

And I'm sorry.

I want to make it right.

Mike, please, just…

sleep on it, okay?

[gentle music playing]

Okay.

- How is the salad?
- Oh.

I love arugula. Excellent.

Lovely.

[Kaia] Hey, Jo Ellen.

Hey.

Hey, um, is Preacher here?

He's in the kitchen… with Jamie.

Ow! What was that for?

Sorry about my wife.
She knows not what she does.

[sighs]

[gentle music playing]

- [Jamie] Perfect bite to go out on.
- [clears throat]

Hey! I just finished off
a k*ller duck confit.

- You want a bite?
- I'm good.

- You all right?
- Yeah!

[clears throat] I mean, uh, no.

[sighs] Okay, I mean…

What exactly is the deal with you two?

[laughs] What do you mean?

Why didn't you tell me that you
almost left Virgin River to be with her?

Whoa, where did you hear that?

Look, I know that there were
women in your past before me.

- Kaia, I--
- Okay?

But you would also feel some kind of way

if I was spending all my time with some…

hot toddy from my past.

- Hot… Hot toddy?
- There's been a misunderstanding.

Great! So, somebody explain it to me!

Because she's in here
fawning all over you, okay?

- You look like you're going out on a date!
- I am going out on a date.

Ready to roll?

Dinner reservation
is at 7:00 in Clear River

and we cannot miss the sunset this time.

Preacher's cooking is not the only thing
I like about Virgin River.

Oh no. I am so sorry.

I'm gonna let you two talk this one out,
and I will see you tomorrow, Preach.

[Jo Ellen] Oh my!

I told you to stay out of it.

I expect a full recovery.

And you were right to call when you did.

I can see my wife now?

Of course. Yeah, go right ahead.

[exclaims softly]

Evelyn.

You wanted to know our daughter's name.

- It was Evelyn.
- [soft music playing]

Did you really diagnose
an appendiceal perforation

and abscess with a portable ultrasound?

Yeah.

We make do with what we have around here.

The, uh, doctor whose career
you're trying to ruin taught me that.

Just so we're clear,
I'm not trying to ruin anyone's career.

I'm simply trying to make sure
this community's needs are met.

You don't know a damn thing
about this community, that's the point!

A woman almost died because of it.

I'm not quite sure
where this hostility is coming from.

- I mean, you called us, remember?
- Yeah.

Because I had to fix a problem
that you created

when you just decided
to ruin the reputation

of the best doctor this town has ever had.

Virgin River doesn't need you.

Virgin River doesn't need you
and Grace Valley Hospital.

Virgin River needs Doc Mullins.
Come on, Jack. Let's go home.

- That was kinda hot.
- Ugh.

[laughs]

[whispers] It was really hot.

- Did we blow it with the social worker?
- No, don't worry. It's all taken care of.

We're gonna squeeze
the home study in later today.

How'd you manage that?

Well, your husband's pretty…
smooth when he needs to be.

- Oh, okay.
- [Jack laughs softly]

- [Doc] Aww.
- Today was fun!

Oh, it was one of the best days
I've had in a long time.

And you know, if anything good
comes out of this investigation,

it's the… the chance that you and I
will have more days like this one today.

But then…

days like today might not be as special,
don't you think?

No. No, no, no, I disagree.

Because each second with you
is more precious than the last.

Mmm.

Well, don't get too used to it.

You'll get your license back soon enough.

Then things will go back
to the way they were.

- The way they're supposed to be.

Right?

Right.

- Isn't it?

Should we sit? I have some questions.

- [Jack] Sure.
- Sure.

Thank you.

I still can't believe
you built this house. [laughs]

I know! Well, actually,
believe it or not, um,

this is not the first time
that Jack has built me a home.

Well, I think the first time was more of
a remodel, but I'll take the compliment.

Now, it seems like you both are very busy.

So, between the bar and the clinic,

how do you plan on making room
in your lives for a child?

Well, um…

You know, actually,
one of the many things that I…

I love about my husband is that he never
shies away from a challenge.

So, I know that if I'm ever
in over my head, he'll show up.

I think we show up for each other.

And I know that we definitely…
have enough love to give.

We'll get through it.

We always do.
And we're always better for it.

Oh! Did Jack tell you
that we are starting a farm?

- We are?
- Yeah!

- I mean, we are.
- We are.

Well, um, I'd love to hear more about it.

[gentle music playing]

[Jack laughs]

[both] Bye!

[Jack exhales] So, uh…

what made you come around on the farm?

[exhales] Well, today was really intense.

And it reminded me what can happen
when people let their fear take over.

So…

[clears throat]
As much as starting a farm scares me…

- [laughs] I know we'll make it work.
- Yeah.

'Cause we always do.

Yeah.

And, I mean, look at this.

I think our son is gonna love
growing up on a farm.

- [Jack laughs] Yeah, I agree!
- [Mel chuckles]

But, um, most importantly,
I want you to make me a promise.

Mmm-hmm? What's that?

I want you to promise

that even when it feels like
we've hit our limit with the baby, with…

work, with each other…

that we're still gonna push ourselves
to do more.

To… try harder and dream bigger.

'Cause I want to teach our son
what you taught me.

[Jack softly] Mmm.

That our family can overcome anything.

Will you promise that?

Always.

Anywhere.

- Forever.
- Aww.

[Mel] What are you doing?

Well, um…

last night was our first marital fight,
so that's…

technically, we've gotta have our first
marital makeup sex.

Oh, well, if you wanted makeup sex, sir,
you should have come home last night.

[sputters] If I had come home last night
without finishing those cabinets,

there's no way we would've made up,
and we wouldn't have had sex.

That's true. That's very true.
That's a good point.

But in order for it to be makeup sex,
it has to happen right after.

Oh, right.
So, what I'm hearing is you want me to

stop.

- [Mel] Obviously not.
- [Jack chuckling]

- [Mel] Obviously.
