and now former Jackson State University
head coach Deion Sanders.

in the country to Colorado,

a Colorado program

that's had two winning seasons

in the last 17 years.

two of the biggest transfers

and that's to win
and develop these young men.

And if you ain't that guy,
you're not wearing a single digit.

Back in the day, when we came up,
the single digits was that guy, right?

I knew we're in a place where
it's gonna take a lot of hard work.

We gotta do a lot of things,

Winning in sports involves team.

When I came in here,
I saw complacency.

I felt the spirit of losing,
no commitment,

no desire, no fight,

And we had to flush that immediately.

Once he told me what I needed
to do at Jackson,

I started to believe it, and I started
to get the results that I wanted.

So following Coach Prime,
that's the best decision for me.

I was almost shocked at what I saw.

It was just like, this isn't the Colorado
that I remember.

to that spot that we needed?

So we gotta find the ingredients
and the tools that we need

to establish a winning tradition.

There was a stretch
when Colorado was talked about

as the greatest football program
in the country.

[all cheering]

[Rick] We were undefeated in '89
and then the following year, we're 11-1-1

and beat Notre Dame
to win the national championship.

[commentator]
Number one for Colorado!

Every year, there were
first-round NFL draft picks

that were coming out of this program.

The 1994 team
with Kordell Stewart, Michael Westbrook,

and ultimately the Heisman Trophy winner
with Rashaan Salaam

was as good as any team in the country.

Rashaan Salaam's whole team going down!

Number one for Colorado!

Well, they've never been able
to kind of recapture the magic they had

and the consistency they had

through the '80s and '90s
and into the early 2000s.

[commentator] Another bad snap,
and Oregon looks like they fell on it.

Self-inflicted wounds all over the place.

Last year was a real challenging year.

[commentator] Their fifth
running touchdown of the night.

[Arielle] 2022 was a rough year.
The team only won one game.

They were 1-11 by the end of it.

It was never a fun assignment.

It was a bit of, uh, an embarrassment.

This is gonna get
into the corner of the end zone.

[Rick] Obviously, when you didn't have
a lot of success the previous year,

you really had to take
a hard look at your program.

When I got the first call from Rick,

his passion and love
for the university just bled through.

-[Rick] What's up, Chris?
-How you doing, sir?

[Coach Prime] I didn't speak to anyone
else that had that same type of love

and compassion and commitment
to their university as he did.

[Rick] Recruiting Coach Prime
was a recruiting

that I had really not done before.

In the old days, you'd send letters
and, you know,

you'd write handwritten notes,
and that's how you did it.

But during this process,
it was really more text messages.

We had very few phone conversations.

[Arielle]
It was extremely tight-lipped.

It was extremely secretive, and it is
the most impressive recruiting thing

I've ever seen from Rick George.

When Rick started the first meetings,

we had to find an airport
that was, like, a good hour away.

A car was rented in another name.
There were no hotels involved.

Like, it was literally like a movie.

When you're hiring a coach, you always
want the privacy and the secrecy.

So when I went down to visit Coach Prime,
I decided to fly into New Orleans.

I felt like going there, you know, if they
were tracking the plane, wouldn't know.

[Ray]
We were trying to keep it low

that we were coming into Colorado.

Like, I was getting a lot of calls.
"You going to Colorado?"

"Man, I don't know.
We're going to South Florida."

You know, just to keep 'em off the scent.
"Nah, we staying here in Jackson."

[man] Three sources told me that
Deion Sanders and his associate

potentially going to Colorado.

[Constance] These schools need to make
a decision before the portals open

and signing day
is right around the corner,

so you move pretty quickly,
but you want to make sure

that you're 110% still focused
where you are.

[Rick] The pressure that I had
during this was huge.

I knew this was a moment in time for
this program that we had to get it right.

[all cheering]

[Mark]
It's a new era, the Prime era.

And let's bring in
the head coach of the Buffaloes,

Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders.

Colorado, you showed up
and you showed out.

I never would have thought
at this time last year

when I was laying up in the hospital
dealing with these blood clots,

getting two toes amputated
and the sides of my legs cut out,

that I would be in Colorado.

And now that I've gotten here
and I see it,

I truly understand what you want.

All you want is the opportunity to win,
to be amongst the best,

and darn it,
I'm gonna give you that.

went from the least interesting

to the most relevant
college football program in America.

He's brought a level of excitement
unlike any coaches that we've seen.

he's gonna bring everything.

much like it was with him

on the football field
and on the baseball field.

You wanna see
what this guy can do next.

[Rick] The growth that we've seen
in our social media platforms,

our season tickets sold out,
spring game's sold out,

ESPN's broadcasting our spring game.

There are these people that are all in,
just want Prime to succeed,

love what's happening,
and then the other group that hates it,

they're just waiting for Prime
and CU to fail.

And there's just nothing in between.

it made Colorado the cool place to be.

that Coach Prime has had on this program

and how hungry CU fans are for it.

It's been very clear from day one,
he's not on a three- or five-year plan.

He is trying to win right away.

[Michael] Prime has shown
that he gets results.

I don't know anybody who had the resume,

the charisma, the ability to communicate,

and the ability to really
make you accountable.

This is the first day of his-story
from history.

He's very comfortable in his skin
and what he's trying to accomplish.

If someone doesn't like his style,

was going to be the starting quarterback
when he came here,

not only just because
he was Coach Prime's son,

but because he led Jackson State
to a bowl game,

to their championship game.

Alabama offer coming out of high school.

He didn't go to Jackson State because
that was the best school that wanted him.

He went to Jackson State
'cause he wanted to play for his dad.

He's very mature, and he's always been.

He has the whole offense
and the whole team on his back

'cause he must be

People discount the understanding

that Shedeur started every game
in high school.

Shedeur has started
every game in college.

And he's been astute and dominant
because he's been here before.

So what I'm big on with all the receivers

is having them see through

he got a good feel for the game,

and that's all this offense is.

that we recently got,

and that's really what this offense

and, you know,
they're gonna have to make a decision.

And if they're gonna defend the run,

then Jimmy Horn is gonna have
a lot of space to work with.

got into the game of football,

that this was gonna be my route.

I was always fast.
I needed to do something with this speed.

He'd just always tell me,

You're going to, like, college.

You're going. You go do something good

Like, I let somebody run me down
'cause I was jogging

and I thought I was fixing
to score a touchdown,

so they ran me down, tackled me.
He snapped on me.

Right now, my pops, he's locked up.

He's locked up. He's been locked up since,
like, my freshman year of college.

I don't know if he'll be out
before the season's over with or what.

You can never talk bad on my pops,

like, say he was a bad parent,
anything like that.

Like, he stood on business by his.

Every time I get on the phone with him,
we talk about football a little bit,

but mainly it just be, like, about life.

A lot of people tell me,
"Boy, you blessed, boy.

It ain't too many people out here
that got a pops like yours,

like, that's really on you.

Like, just take all that in
and cherish it."

The position I'm in,

I'm built to break the curse
of my family, you know.

Like, I feel like my family curse,
ain't too many people make it out.

So, like, it's just, like, how you...
how you take things and run with it.

Are you gonna let it affect you?
Is it gonna make or break you?

And right now, it ain't breaking me.

Fellas, we wanna have this meeting

so we can understand personnel.

We can be great coaches all we want,
but if we don't have the proper personnel,

the personnel that we desire,
we're not gonna be successful.

Now, we'll start with those defensive ends
and those pass rushers.

I want a guy that's gonna mix it up,
take the paint off his helmet,

but a durn motor that's unbelievable.

Before we even took the job,
we understood the whole team.

To be successful,
we had to change the whole program.

We had to get 50 to 60 new players.

All the DBs we're looking for
got to be great 50/50 guys.

And if there's a chance
for us to get the ball...

Um, I don't like tall running backs.

I like those short, squatty guys, man.

The Emmitt Smith build,
the LaDainian Tomlinson build.

Those type of guys dig down low,
that you gotta bring it.

We just believe in staying
with the blueprint.

Just come here and recruit the right guys,
get the right mix,

make sure that we come to work
every day and set the example.

But we have a lot of work
to do here in Colorado.

Inside, I'm gonna be honest,
I want Mandingo warriors.

[Coach Prime] Got you.

I want your linebackers to half-play
running back some type of way.

Guys that are physical on contact,

that's not shying away or turning
their shoulders in on the block,

that run sideline to sideline,
that are smart,

that are bona fide leaders.

I'm looking for a young man
that's smart, tough,

fast, discipline, with character.

Smart, tough, fast, discipline,
with character.

So when you guys are...
people are calling you about guys,

you know the characteristics
of what we're looking for.

So that means when I see some bull junk
out there on that field, that's on y'all.

When I see some bull junk
at your position, that's on you.

Because you know what we want,
you said what you want,

you have the liberty to go out there
and get it, and do not settle.

This part of the season
is always difficult,

especially when you've
played the game before

and you've had dreams
of going to the next level,

and you have to tell somebody
that "You may still be able

to accomplish those dreams,
but it won't be here."

And they've invested time,
you've invested time,

but you have to part ways.

We're very transparent that, yes,
everyone knows there is a transfer portal.

Everyone knows that it is utilized.

And if you're a kid here
on the Colorado football team,

then you gotta make sure
that this is for you.

They were 1-11 last year.

And in football,
guess who's the first to get fired?

The coach is.

So why I wanna play with some guys
that got the other guy fired?

It didn't work for him.

So why is it gonna work for me?
What's gonna be so much different?

[Gary] We're a long way
from where we wanna be,

and that's what spring is all about.

We're still trying to find
our right mix of guys

that's gonna go ahead
and compete for the 2023 season.

But it's a lot of moving pieces.

It's well established
that Coach Prime can go out

and get the best recruits in the country.

I guess the question is,
does anyone on this roster make it?

Is there anyone that catches his eye
enough in spring ball

to make him say, "All right,
you know what, you can stay"?

How many guys
are in the running back room now?

I think we got about eight,
maybe seven. Um...

Once again,
it's gotta be first in, last out.

[John] We were concerned
when Coach Prime was coming in.

You know, we knew there was
gonna be huge turnover,

and my comment to Charlie was,
"Keep doing the same thing."

You could definitely tell
there was quite a bit of guys

that were nervous, you know, scared
about what was gonna happen to them.

'Cause obviously he was bringing
that Louis luggage, as we all know,

but personally in my heart of hearts,

I knew that I was part
of that Louis luggage.

It may not be in the form
that everybody thinks,

but I'm gonna bring
what I have to the table.

I wanna see you guys
start making some contact.

Being on that team last year,

I definitely got to see
some opportunities for myself.

I got to break
the walk-on rushing record last year.

he doesn't care about any of that,

whether that's the new guys

that's being done.

There was a real struggle in that,

but coming together as a team
was a big part of it.

And Coach Prime brings
so much more to this team,

for people who have been there
through everything

because they come in and they say,

and I don't care about your culture
because to create a winning culture,

that means we can't do
anything that you've done."

He's come in and he's embraced
the history of Colorado.

what makes Colorado special.

Since I was a little kid
before we ever moved to Boulder,

we listened to CU football.

My dad and mom

and naturally, my twin and I
just picked it up.

We liked Colorado,
we were Coloradoans,

and we supported
the Colorado team.

for a lot of players on this team

to see if they're gonna be here
when fall rolls around.

we get our first look at Shedeur Sanders,

the quarterback for the Buffaloes.

So the past couple weeks,

a lot of players have transferred
out an alarming rate.

Is that a testament to you

This is the genesis of the new era,
the new thing.

some of the team members,

and we're gonna reload and get some
kids that we really identify with.

[man] Since the start of last season,
a record 71 Colorado players

have entered the transfer portal.

About two-thirds of that number
have left in the past three weeks alone.

I have never seen a transfer portal
situation like this before.

I've never seen a turnover
like this before,

where only ten scholarship players
come back from the previous season.

I mean, if it works,
this could be something incredible.

He had to do it in a drastic way,
and that's exactly what's happening.

lead you to where you need to be in life.

Why not take a risk?

It's one thing to be a great coach,
but it's another thing

to make players
want to have you coach them.

And he has the ability
to make the guys come to him.

in order to succeed?

Colorado was the perfect place for that.

[Bishop] Florida State changed my position
from D-tackle to D-end.

But when I got to Colorado,

the game plan he got for me
is, like... be me.

[Dylan] I was committed to Notre Dame,
but after meeting with Prime

and talking to the coaches,
I felt like my future is where he is.

He said he could make
my dreams come true,

and so that's why I'm here.
