This part of the country suffered
hugely during the Great Plague

and was also home
to a number of witch trials.

of paranormal activity

of this 200-year-old cottage.

The first thing I'd like to say is,

my dad living at the other end,

but apart from that,
there's something else going on

and it's not of a human nature,

It's the home of dancer,
choreographer

and reality TV star, Louie Spence.

Do I believe in the paranormal?
Yes and no.

There are certain things what are
unexplained that I can't explain.

That's why you guys are here.

Six months into living in here,
I started to get this strange smell.

It was like of cigarette smoke.

It was just like a musty,
a thick smell of smoke.

Along with that,
I've got this waft of a perfume.

Like your nan;
it's that kind of smell.

It could happen
for a couple of days in a row

and then, it could go
for three or four weeks

and then, it's there again.

Now, you explain that to me.

What do I think's causing in the
activity? That's quite hard to say.

I mean, my sisters
like to think it's my mum.

We had a marble thing
and then, her ashes were inside.

Water had got in
and she was this bit of sludge.

I was like, "What are we gonna do?"

and thought, "I know.
We'll cook her on the AGA,"

and I thought, "She'd already been
burnt at about 1,000 degrees anyway,

so going on the AGA at about 250.

It's not gonna hurt her.
I was drying her out."

Maybe, by drying her out,
I have released her spirit.

So, it could be my mum.

I would just like help with finding
out if there's a spirit here.

They may not want to be here

and it may be something we're
doing that is keeping them here

and we need to release them.

If that's the case,
I don't want them there either.

I feel this property's gonna have
an emotional connection somehow.

Something to the homeowner that is
just emotional to them. Personal.

Medium, Ian,
insists on being told nothing

about the investigation in advance,

so he knows it's only his psychic
abilities that are guiding him.

a female energy there

and there's a smell.

My eyes are stinging,
soon as I've walked into this place.

How can I explain it?

There's a scent of some sort and
there's a strong mist or a smoke,

instantly, that's drawing me into
what appears to be a dining room.

So, this room here.
My eyes are stinging once again.

There's something to do with
the smell that I smell in the car.

I think it's cigar or tobacco
and is that smoke coming from that

because it just seems
very thick and heavy.

I've come just down the road
to the local churchyard

to meet historian Richard Bale.

It's such a stunning, quaint village.

Any kind of juicy gossip
or scandals or rumours?

There's always stuff like that
in villages?

There is because it relates to
a lady that was married three times.

This story is recorded
by some local historians

in the early 19th century.

There was a general belief that
widows might k*ll their husbands

by putting pigeon feathers
into their pillows

and where we're standing, we have
a lady who was accused of that.

k*lling their husbands
with pigeon feathers.

How could that work?
What did they believe would happen?

I can only imagine that there must
be poison within the feathers.

Or maybe some kind of witchcraft.

This lady called Rebecca Tiffin

was initially married
to a guy called John Joseph.

When he died,

a thought that he had died
from this pigeon feather m*rder.

She, then, married a guy
called John Jocelyn

who, as he was dying, maybe,
he'd been poisoned in the same way

and he threatened to walk, if she
was to marry for a third time.

What did he mean by that?

That he would rise from the dead?
Yes. I take it to mean that.

This is an amazing dresser.

It's beautiful, but the closer
I come to this dresser,

it's also as if there's
some poltergeist activity...

and it's oozing energy
that it's touched something here.

There's just something
strange going on.

It's really funny because that
really strong smell of cigar

and smoke is getting stronger
as I walk into this area.

Wow. You can almost feel it.

You can plait the fog of smoke
from the dining room

into this little passageway here

and it gets stronger,
the further you go into it...

and then, there's this
sweet smell of perfume.

There's a female in here
trying to get my attention.

There is a lady here called Pat.

Well, Patricia,
but she's saying 'Pat'...

and she loves this house.

But it doesn't make sense

cos it's almost as if she's never
been here, but she loves this house.

I've come to meet Louie's sister,
Tania,

who also lives on the property
in a separate annexe.

What's your position on paranormal
hauntings that kind of stuff?

Do you believe in it all?

I wouldn't say I don't believe in
it, but I've think there's an answer

to something that happens,

rather than, "My God,
have I got a ghost in my house?"

or, "Is something going on?"

And it doesn't really scare me.

So, I try to look at it logically.

So, why are we here then?

Because when someone's there,
but they're not there

and you turn round and you think
Louis might be coming up the stairs,

I don't hear him, but I think,
"Louie's in the doorway"

and I turn round but he's not.

So, that sort of feeling.
I turned round but nothing.

So, you thought that someone
was behind you?

You get that feeling
sometimes I'll sit here

and I'll think,
"Louie's coming over there,"

but you just feel that, so I turn
around to see him; no one's there.

I don't know what- It's a presence.

Like somebody's there!
That's just weird.

Like someone's behind me.

about John Jocelyn,

who was allegedly k*lled
with poisoned pigeon feathers,

in particular of a darker nature?

back, to the time of Queen Mary I,

we have a guy called William Piggott,

who was a Protestant dissenter

and he was burnt at the stake
on the 28th of March, 1555

and we are in a part of Essex

where the Witch finder General,
Matthew Hopkins,

was operating
during the English Civil w*r

and of the 23 women
that were prosecuted,

four of them passed away in prison
before they came to trial

and the other 19 were all hung.

So, we've potentially got Rebecca,
her three husbands;

we have William Piggott

and all of this going on
in witch-hunting territory.

So in terms of our investigation
at the house this evening,

we've got a lot to consider.

the beams, looking at the floor

this property from this woodwork."

How did he die?

The rumour was that she k*lled him,

using pigeon feathers
under his pillow.

Emphysema. It causes a dust.

It's a problem of the lungs.

that some kind of bacteria,

or something from the feathers,
would do that.

When I'm watching TV, constantly got
a smell of dust, but it's constant.

To help re-build the energy
on the board,

19th century cottage.

I've placed seven fixed infrared
cameras across the building.

Starting on the ground floor.

Camera number one is located
in the dining room.

Now, this shot is looking directly
down the small passageway

that links into the living room.

This room's really interesting
because of all those timbers,

there's loads of energy bouncing
around in there

and also, that little hallway,

there's perfume smells,
there's smoke and cigar smells.

is also in the dining room,

but this is giving us a shot
of the other entrance.

The third fixed infrared camera's
placed in the living room.

This is where we started spirit
triggers this evening.

And that's where that chair,

That's creepy.

Listen, I think we've much managed
to conclude that John is here,

but he's told us
and confirms how he's died.

There's got to be a connection
to the fact that some of the items

and that have built the
infrastructure of this property

came from the local church
and the local area.

So, perhaps, they are the magnetic
qualities attracting these spirits.

Let's go back downstairs and
communicate with their mother, Pat,

cos I think that she is also
a prominent spirit in this property.

I've felt Pat close to me
throughout the investigation,

but John has dominated
the interactions we've had.

I hope she wants to speak to us
as well.

As Echovox was successful last time,
I'm using it again.

We got, early on, in spirit triggers,

some evidence that she was here.

The windows rattled

We know there's never been anything

Louie, we started off our spirit
trigger session with yourself.

If you remember rightly,

Ian connected with a gentleman
who we felt was called "John".

This will blow your mind
and I actually played this back

and had to call these guys to hear
this because it was just too good.

What do you make of that?
That was very clear.

That response wasn't coming
through the speaker.

That response was in the ether.

I'll play it again for you.

And it did sound like a human voice
going, "John", rather than...

Yeah, like a whisper, "John".

..electronic sounds.

If it's my mum's,
she'll be able to sort him out.

I don't mind him staying,
but hearing his voice like that,

I don't really want to have
conversations with him.

So, after you've left us,
we decided to come back in.

We went into the lounge and tried
to find out more about John.

And Ian saw and sensed a presence
in this little narrow corridor.

I decided to go over with a voice
recorder and listen to this.

I got to think for...

Yeah, interesting at the time
we played this,

we all thought, oh my God,
that is sound of a wheezing chest,

which links in perfectly
with the way gents will die.

But now we gonna amplified slightly

and you gonna hear
the actual word that was said.

What do you think you hear?
It said 'm*rder'.

Yeah, they're not happy about that.

If you trying to tell me
didn't matter

than then now is communicating.

I don't know if I would like him
to stay, cos they weren't m*rder*d

in my house, they were m*rder*d
in the area.

But for some reason, they're sort of
communicating with me to let me know

they'd been m*rder*d.
What am I meant to do?

Well, that's why we're here. Yeah.

This prompted us to leave Ian alone
in your house.

Jayne and I decided to go
to the nerve centre and watch.

There was no one else
apart from Ian and Adrian.

I went into spare room. Yep.

I kept hearing voices and noises

and I was asking for John
to give me a sign,

to give me some more evidence

and at this point,
myself and Adrian started choking.

We started feeling like somebody
was pushing on our chest

and then, as I looked at the window,
this...

was on the windowsill,
on the inside of the windowsill

which is a pigeon feather.

That is quite strange
because we never open that window.

I can clarify that
that wasn't in the window

cos I did look out the window
before I sat on the bed

and I asked for some more evidence
and then, I saw this.

So, that, to me, tells me that John
did pass over the same way

as the history books tell us.

I don't think there's anything
to worry about too much

because your mother is still here.

All the time we was investigating,
personally, I felt your mum with me.

We asked a question, "Are you
trying to protect your family?"

and there was a nice response.

"Are you trying to protect
your family?"

Yeah.

We feel that was your mum
trying to come forward.

Your mother is here;
your mother made herself known.

She's a very protective and lovely,
angelic spirit.

We blessed the property.

These guys actually said prayers
and smudged and saged the building.

It wasn't the case that anything
needed banishing, Louie.

This is a lovely, warm family home.

It's literally to make sure that
harmony and balance is restored.

But of course, we think there's
just a little job to do with you,

if you're up for that now.

I just feel I would like
to make sure John's fully gone

and I think it'd be nice to thank
your mum as well, for helping us

and it'd be nice if you'd maybe
say a few words if you're happy.

I'll say a prayer.

We'll move John to the light
to make sure he's gone

we'll say a few words to Mum.

I'll look at you

and then you follow then we'll finish

and then peace and harmony
is in your house.
