01x10 - Ring Toss/Letters Home

Post by bunniefuu »

[plays trumpet call]

[snoring]

- [owl hoots]
- [gasps]

[gasps]

[whimpers]

Hmm.

[whimpers]

[yawns]

- [owls hoot]
- [screams]

[whimpering]

- [sighs]
- [screaming]

[Snoopy groans]

[Sally] "Ring toss."

[slurping]

I've noticed your brother's dog
is a bit on the unconventional side.

You get used to it.

My mom is a veterinarian,

so I usually have a pretty good rapport
with dogs and I love them.

Think he'd like to play fetch?

I don't love your chances.

Here, boy! Go get it. Go fetch.

[slurping]

Fetch isn't your thing, huh?

Okay.

How about...

a game of ring toss?

After you.

Nice one.

Your turn, Sally.

[campers laughing]

My cake! My piñata!

My dress!

Who did this?

Um, no, thanks.

Ring toss is kind of a baby game.

I prefer real sports like hopscotch.

Suit yourself.

Go again?

Whoo-hoo!

Another tie.

Sally, you sure you don't want to play?

Yes.

I'll just be over here, waiting for you
to realize how boring this actually is.

[grunts]

Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

So, you know, you're missing out
on some quality rock-stacking here.

[Naomi] Tied again!

Nobody told me you were
such a ringer for ring toss, Snoopy.

[groans]

I need some advice, Big Brother.

Really? You want my advice?

Sure.

No pressure,
but there may be a friendship on the line.

I see.

Well, friendship can be complicated.

Do you need advice on trust?

Compassion? Honesty?

I need you to teach me to play ring toss.

Oh, okay.

Whoo-hoo!

[groans, grunts]

Another tie.

Okay. How about this time
we make it even harder?

[chuckles]

A stale bagel?

It was the only ring
I could find on short notice.

Okay, chin up.

Back straight.

Bend your elbow and your knee.

The other knee.

Now, remember it's all in the wrist.

And toss.

Hmm.

Maybe you should stand a little closer.

I did it. I can play ring toss.

Well, technically, we still need
to work our way up to throw...

No, I'm good. Thanks, Big Brother.

If you ever need any actual life advice,
I'm available for that too.

I'm a fount of helpful knowledge.

A fount.

- [Sally] Okay.
- [screams]

I'm ready to play now.

Great. We've added some rules.

For our next toss, we have to face
backwards while aiming with a hand mirror.

Want to go first?

Oh, um... [sucks teeth]

...I forgot my, uh,
throwing gloves in the cabin.

[chuckles]

Throwing gloves?

- [ring clunks]
- [chuckles]

If I'm going to master ring toss,

I'm clearly going to need to think bigger
than my big brother

and get help from someone else.

Sorry. Ring toss isn't my game.

I usually play sports where you
sh**t through things, not over them.

You know, goalposts, uprights,
basketball hoops.

Thanks anyway.

[screams]

[sighs] Rats.

Huh. Maybe ring toss is my thing.

{\an8}My diagnosis?

{\an8}You're afraid of success.

{\an8}That doesn't sound like me.

{\an8}Wait a minute.

{\an8}Was it you who ruined my party?

You've come to the right place.

"Ring toss evolved
from the game of horseshoes

due in part to horses needing their shoes
and the great iron shortage of 1876."

[door opens]

"The game is played
by players alternate..."

[sighs]

How'd the ring toss go?

Terrible.

Naomi's been playing it with Snoopy
all day and I'm no good at it.

What if I embarrass myself?

I didn't come to summer camp
to be humiliated.

Why would you be humiliated?

Because Naomi's great at it and I'm not.

Maybe she'll think less of me and start to
wonder what else we don't have in common.

Then before you know it,
we're not friends anymore.

Sally, friendship isn't about
having everything in common

or being good at the same things.

It's about how someone makes you feel.

That seems optimistic.

Maybe.

But it seems to me
a friend being good at something

isn't a reason to feel excluded.

It's an opportunity to be proud of them.

Huh?

I hadn't thought of it like that.

Thanks, Big Brother.

[slurping]

There you are.

Yes. And ready to toss some rings.

Oh, we're all done with that.

We were actually looking for you
to see what you feel like doing.

Really? Have you ever played go fish?

Yes, but not very well.

It doesn't matter.

I'm in.

Snoopy?

Mm-hmm.

Do you have any nines?

Go fish.

[gasps] Impossible.

How about you, Snoopy?

Impossible.

[chuckling]

[screams]

Sorry, Chuck.

I just can't seem to miss in this game.

[Charlie Brown]
"A Beagle Scout is Patient."

So, what's this contraption again?

It's a solar oven.

I made it with a box and some foil.

It uses the heat of the sun to cook food.

What are we cooking? A ham? Two hams?

I was thinking of something
in the marshmallow family, sir.

Ooh.

Aren't those usually
roasted over a campfire?

What is the sun if not
the biggest campfire there is?

Now, all we need to do is wait.

[whimpers]

Don't worry.
This shouldn't take any time at all.

Be patient, Snoopy.

A watched marshmallow never toasts.

[gasps] It worked.

They're browning.

[chuckles]

Wait.

That was just a shadow from a leaf.

Never mind.

[crying]

I can't believe it. We waited all day
and nothing happened.

Where did I go wrong?

[sniffing]

Now that's what I call adapting, Snoopy.

Uncooked marshmallows
are just as delicious.

[tooting]

[panting]

[straining]

What are they doing?

I believe Snoopy's helping his troop
earn their sailing badge.

Should we tell him the lake is over there?

I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually.

[Franklin] "Letters Home."

Oh, hey, Snoopy.

Writing a letter?

"Dear Spike..."

You're writing to your brother?

Tell him hello for me.

[Charlie Brown] "The round-headed kid
who brings my food says, 'Hello.'

I'm writing to tell you about a
recent discovery my troop and I made

while attempting to earn
the Beagle Scout collection badge.

We began our task in earnest

with the first question any good collector
must answer: What to collect?

Conrad's suggestion of classic cars
was deemed too expensive."

[groans]

"Harriet's suggestion of moon rocks
was deemed impractical."

- [grunts]
- [chatters]

"Woodstock suggested
something from our surroundings.

Perhaps I should have started with
a clearer definition of 'collection.'

This was going to be harder
than I thought."

[Franklin] "Dear Grandpa, You always say
that after a good pair of shoes,

there's nothing more important
than having a sense of humor.

Well, I have a story about that.

It all started when I went
to brush my teeth one morning."

[gags] Is that sour cream?

"Indeed it was.

It seems I'd fallen prey
to a classic camp prank

by none other than
the master of mischief himself, Schroeder.

I had no choice but to respond."

[Schroeder] Ugh.
I just got these before camp.

Why won't they fit?

[groans]

Pranklin.

[blows]

[Franklin] "I realized
whether it's good-natured pranks...

- or just being silly..."
- [laughing]

"...a sense of humor
isn't just a good thing to have.

It's a good thing to share with a friend."

[Charlie Brown] "After a lengthy
and illuminating discussion

on what constitutes a collection,

we were ready to earn our badge.

As a nod to our surroundings,
we decided to collect leaves.

- Unfortunately, I forgot a simple truth."
- [chuckling]

"No bird can resist the allure
of a fresh pile of leaves.

Back to the drawing board."

[Lucy] "Dear Aunt Marian,
Summer camp is going well.

Thanks in no small part to my efforts.

Most of the activities have been fun.

Some more than others."

Moonlight madness.

I can't wait.

Big deal.

Staying up late to look at the moon?

I'm not sure this even meets the legal
definition of an activity or of madness.

But it's a supermoon, which only happens
when the moon is closest to Earth.

Get ready for the majesty
of celestial proximity.

Oh, I'm ready.

[Lucy] "They padded the so-called activity
with some games."

[screams]

"And they were pretty fun,

but it felt like a lot of fuss

for a night built around
looking at a rock in the sky."

[campers chuckle] Yay!

Look, everyone.

Ooh.

[Lucy] "Turns out something
that sounds like a waste of time

can be pretty special
if you give it half a chance."

[Charlie Brown] "In the wake
of the leaf incident,

the Beagle Scouts and I
decided to collect something

a little less enticing to leap into:

pine cones.

Specifically,
pine cones that resemble US states.

Bill found one that looked like Minnesota.

Harriet had Utah, while Woodstock,
Conrad and Olivier had Texas,

Oregon and Delaware, respectively.

Turns out the only thing
pine cones resemble are other pine cones.

Another miss."

[Sally] "Dear Mom and Dad, I'm writing
to you because Big Brother says I should.

I will keep this brief.

Recently, my fellow campers and I
found out we were being treated

to a camp movie night."

I hope the movie has lots of action.

I hope it's a documentary.

You didn't hear?

We're watching the creepy classic,
It Came From The Space Lagoon.

Uh, I'm sure they wouldn't show us
anything too scary.

I heard one year they showed
a movie so scary,

one kid is still afraid to go outside.

[sips] Should be fun.

[chuckles]

I've never seen a scary movie before.

What if I get frightened?

I believe that's the point.

[Sally] "I was concerned.

A reputation as a scaredy-cat
can be a hard thing to shake.

Fortunately, my friend Naomi and I

came up with a plan
to build up my fear tolerance."

[screams]

[creaks]

[roars]

[chuckling]

- Boo!
- [screams]

[Sally] "I was ready."

[screams]

"Turns out being a little scared
can actually be a lot of fun,

especially when everyone
is doing it together."

[screaming]

[chuckling]

[Sally] "All in all, it was one of
the best times of the whole summer.

PS, please send cookies,
preferably chocolate chip.

Regards, Sally Brown."

[Charlie Brown] "Thus far, our attempts
at collection had all come up short.

I knew our collection
should be something special,

but what that could be
continued to elude us."

[rattling]

"It was then that it hit me.

I realized what we could collect,

or rather what we had already
been collecting:

memories.

You may not be able to pick up
a memory and hold it..."

[laughing]

[cheering]

"...but you could carry it in your heart
for the rest of your days,

and that makes memories
the most valuable collection of all."

"From Beagle Scout Camp,
your loving brother, Snoopy."

[jazz playing]
