An adventurer who served with the strongest fighters finally sets out on his own, in middle age.

01x03 - A Super First-Rate Elite vs an F-Rank Ossan

Post by bunniefuu »

[indistinct chatter]

[flame hissing]

[whimpering]

[grunts]

- [fire crackling]

- [screaming]

Yeah.

Guess you can't expect any more

from the E-rank exam.

Hi, my name is Adolf.

It's a pleasure to meet you!

So, have you heard of the

Four Foundational Faculties?

They're physical strength,

body control,

your magical reserves,

or capacity and magic control.

Which you can add to make

a rough approximation

of an adventurer's power.

And luckily for me,

I can visualize

the Four Foundational

Faculties of others.

[ADOLF] It's possible

thanks to an ability

I've had since birth!

Now, check it out!

[male examinee 1B screaming]

[Raster laughing]

As expected,

and what about the examiner?

[ADOLF]

Whoa!

Nice, he's definitely A-rank!

He's way above average

for sure!

[grunting]

I strained my eyes too much!

It's dangerous to look

at anyone so strong.

Hm?

Who's that?

He looks so dreary.

Don't tell me he's taking

the test at his age.

Now, I'm curious

about his ability scores.

[screaming]

My eyes!

The Ossan Newbie Adventurer,

Trained to Death

by the Most Powerful Party,

Became Invincible.

- [ALISA] Um, excuse me?

- Hm?

Sorry to bother you,

but are you the woman I saw

walking with Rick yesterday?

He and I worked

at the Guild together,

so I thought

I'd introduce myself.

I'm Alisa Granger,

at your service!

Yes, my name

is Reanette Elfelt.

Nice to meet you.

He and I are

in the same party.

Ah, I knew it had to be

something like that!

Hey, Ray-ray!

We're over here!

Hey!

Would you be interested

in sitting down with us?

[ALISA]

Yes, thank you!

[gasps]

Why is an orc here?

Hey, Reanette!

The space next to me

is still available.

Why don'tcha have a seat?

[REANETTE] I would rather

not be sexually harassed today.

Yeah, whatever.

So, who's she?

[REANETTE] Mister Rick's

former coworker, Miss Alisa.

Oh, where are my manners?

I'm Alisa Granger!

Hey, girl,

the space next to me is open!

Please, sit down!

[REANETTE]

Might I recommend not.

[footfall]

Does our rookie fare well

considering all that

you've seen thus far?

Yes.

He will pass this exam

without incident.

Yeah, I hope, but Raster

might make that impossible.

Hm, is there

a problem with him?

Rick's examiner is an A-rank.

Frankly, he has a reputation

for getting violent

with the examinees.

Ah, if that's it,

he'll be fine.

- Quite.

- Huh!

Looks like they're starting.

[chomping]

Let's go, Raster!

Show that 40-something

year old who's boss!

Please get back at them

after what they did to me!

What did they do to you?

[RASTER] That you should

successfully get away

from our guards comes

as nothing less than a shock!

Of course, perhaps

it was poor judgment

to expect more

from peasants like those.

You should not draw any

false equivalency between them

and the genius nobleman

before you.

Right.

[RICK] I can tell

he's different at a glance,

and yet

[RICK]

Let me ask you one thing,

why did you decide

to become an adventurer?

Why?

Why not?

This way of life

is effortless for me.

Even as a noble,

being a former adventurer

is useful to raise

one's social rank.

I plan to quit when

I've decided my status

has gained what it can.

It's boring anyway.

[deep breath]

Understood.

Well I am not gonna lose

to a guy like you!

[scoffs]

You should speak

to your betters

with greater deference.

Though after we're done here,

you won't be capable

of any speech

for quite a while!

Now, why don't we begin?

Here's Level-One

Nature Magic, Ice Shot.

[rumbling]

[RASTER]

Come now, what's the matter?

Are you paralyzed by fear?

[RICK] You can't let your

anger take control of you.

Stay calm and rational.

First

If I may

I have one piece of advice.

[REANETTE]

After the match begins

just focus for one minute.

Observe what your

opponent intends to do.

[RICK]

To be honest, I am scared

but I trust Reanette!

If you won't fight back

then I'll do whatever I want.

Beat that whelp!

Show that 40-something

year old man who's boss!

Level-Three Nature Magic,

Flame Illuminate!

[RICK]

He doesn't need an incantation?

[fire crackling]

All right, keep observing!

Oh, no!

[grunts]

He's okay?

[BROUGHSTON] For Rick,

something so insignificant

doesn't count as taking a hit.

That's insignificant?

Do you know

the Four Foundational Faculties

that determine someone's power?

Yes, of course.

[ALISA] Physical strength,

body control,

magic reserves,

and magic control, right?

[BROUGHSTON]

Correct.

Of the four,

one's magic reserves

must be developed in youth

or there is no hope

for later growth.

[ALISA] Yeah, if I recall

you have until you're 20

before it's too late.

So then, since Rick started

as an adventurer at 30

- [slurps]

- doesn't that mean?

You understand then.

Rick's magic reserves

are quite low by any standards.

Instead

[BROUGHSTON]

Listen well, Rick.

The only thing you can

consistently rely on

is your own body.

[RICK]

Sir!

Now, to begin our training

let's go one village over.

Sir!

But, how can I get there

with these things on my legs?

Easily, that's just

a mere 100 kilograms.

That's extremely heavy!

Make sure

you don't fall behind.

[BROUGHSTON]

Around these parts

there are many

carnivorous monsters.

- [RICK] What?

- [hissing]

[screaming]

To make up for his reserves

he trained exhaustively

in the other three areas.

Huh?

The next one will hurt a little

more than the previous.

Level-Four Nature Magic,

Hurricane Cutter!

[wind gusting]

[gasps]

I developed his physical

strength from scratch.

Ah?

Mizett taught him

magic control.

[BROUGHSTON]

He hates hard work,

so I'm surprised

he saw it through to the end.

Whatever, man.

Thought I'd leave my bro

without defensive magic?

Ricky and I used magic

to play big, expl*si*n-y games!

[chomping]

[MIZETT]

Imagine if I had slacked off.

My man would've wound up

as a pile of ash.

[BROUGHSTON]

And Reanette was in charge

of training his body control.

[gasps] But I thought

you were a regular maid!

[MIZETT] She's not a maid,

she just dresses like it!

We trained.

Through it all, Rick adapted

to everything we threw at him.

[BROUGHSTON] He already stands

with us as an S-rank.

It would appear that

your body's built

as hard as your head!

Let's keep this moving!

Level-Four Nature

Composed Magic,

Shock Burn!

S-rank?

For real?

Though, of course,

he remains utterly unaware

of his own power.

[grunting]

You have a long way to go.

[BROUGHSTON]

Even for an F-rank

this should only take

one blow to shatter.

[RICK]

Sir.

[MIZETT] Of course

that's our captain's fault.

Hmm.

Now, watch!

This is all

you third rates deserve!

[RASTER] You and that

geriatric examiner

refuse to face reality.

Your only purpose is to be

tormented by elites like me!

[rumbling]

- [laughs]

- Knock him out!

[gasps]

[wind gusting]

[exhaling deeply]

Hah, perhaps I got

a little too worked up there.

- [rumbling]

- Huh?

[grunts]

[exhaling deeply]

[scoffs]

Nothing annoys me

as much as a commoner

who won't accept

the inadequacy of their birth.

What's with this 40-something?

Who is he?

Very well, then!

I shall deliver the finishing

blow with my own two hands!

[RASTER]

Forceful Fist, Quadrillions!

Flickering Feet Thousandths!

It's the end for you!

[grunts]

Impossible

Now, I see.

Oh?

[RICK] I finally understand

what Reanette meant.

He's so convinced

his natural talents are enough

he's never put in the time

and effort necessary

to refine them!

It's true he has

vast reserves of magic,

but his other fundamentals

are sloppy!

If this is all you have to show

then I'll take the free win!

[RASTER] Lucky you, managing

to counter that attack.

But your luck runs out here.

O blazes of hell,

fires of this world,

sacred flames of the heavens.

By your heat,

return all things in nature

to the ash from

whence they came!

Whatever hope he had is gone

with the full incantation!

Level-Three Nature Magic

Flame Eliminate!

[fire roaring]

[all gasping]

I considered

using more to block that,

but this was all your sloppy

magic warrants from me.

[gasps]

[MIZETT] He only needed

a small amount of magic,

focused very accurately.

He blocked it with less

than a hundred thousandth

of the magic his opponent used.

Not an easy task, but my boy's

gotten precise enough

with his magic control

to make stuff like that work.

[RASTER] It's wild

how inflated your ego is

after a series of coincidences.

But that's over, now.

- Flickering Feet Thousandths!

- [RICK] Too slow.

[RASTER]

Iron Body!

[grunts]

Our brother used

strengthening magic right there

but the 40-something didn't?

[ANGELICA]

I knew this guy wasn't normal!

All right, then.

It seems you may actually

possess abilities

that exceed that of an E-rank,

and I'm willing to accept that.

Furthermore, I've grown

somewhat exhausted

after testing more examinees

than expected.

[RASTER] And on top of that

chance has repeatedly

taken your side

during our little bout.

Add all of these

factors together,

and we have quite

the lucky third-rate oaf!

How many levels

of justification do you need?

That wasn't a magic punch.

My control over my body

just lets me hit that hard.

But you?

No matter how deep

your magic reserves,

you lack the mastery

to actually use it properly!

Then let me ask you.

Your magic is barely good

enough to use

a handful of spells,

so what's this?

How did someone your age

become strong enough

to survive my attacks

in two years?

You really wanna know?

You're sure?

[RICK] I wasn't allowed

out of the dragon's lair

until I managed to beat it.

I ran through a literal

minefield to train.

I'm gonna die.

I'm gonna die!

I swam through

monster capture fluid.

I could feel it as it got

inside my lungs!

Wait, there's no

way he could have survived

any of that, is there?

[BROUGHSTON]

No, he died.

Then, how is he here?

If it's applied

immediately after death,

my Heal is strong enough

to resurrect the fallen.

[whimpering]

[BROUGHSTON] We break

ourselves down to rebuild.

It's through overcoming

our physical limitations

that we become strong.

And boy, did we really break

this guy down, or what?

[whimpering]

[MIZETT]

What are you waiting for?

Go ahead, bro!

- Ah, but it's too high

- [grunts]

And pay attention to how

the wind feels on the way down!

You should have no problem

seeing its movements

after this!

- [thuds]

- Ah?

- [choking]

- Yo, cap!

He's gonna need a Heal!

[laughing]

Here ya go!

Level-One Nature Magic,

Air Sho--

[grunting]

[ground rumbling]

[groaning]

[water burbling]

[tapping]

[thudding]

There's a trick.

You can use the object's weight

to your advantage.

Ah, I see!

[growling]

[gargling]

[RICK] I believe you may have

left out a trick or two.

[laughs]

You should at least

come up with a convincing lie.

[RASTER] Even if such

a severe training regimen

really did exist

what would have possibly been

your motivation to continue?

[RICK] Laurotte and I have the

exact same thing motivating us.

We have our dreams

to keep us going.

Yes, yes, how lovely.

So, what dream

must I beat out of you?

To slay the strongest monster.

Kaiser Alsapiet

will be my prey!

[laughs]

Listen to that idiot,

still believing fairy tales

at his age!

[cackles]

Now, seriously.

You must be joking,

saying that!

I'm almost certain that

I've heard that name before.

"Alsapiet?"

From The Legends

of the Hero Yamato?

Wasn't that the main monster?

- Yes, that's right.

- It is.

All of us in Orichalcum Fist

see it as our ultimate goal.

[laughs]

Legends of the Hero Yamato

are bedtime stories!

Defeating Alsapiet

is the sort of dream

you'd expect a child

to outgrow!

You're welcome to keep thinking

that they're just stories.

My dream has nothing

to do with you.

You have a point.

And similarly, you have

no more to do with me.

It's about time

we put an end to this.

Level-Seven Nature Magic,

Forest Rope!

Level Seven

without an incantation?

That's pretty impressive.

[RASTER] Don't be

too impressed quite yet.

I plan to show you

what genuine talent looks like.

We'll see what kind

of "impression" is left on you

after this one!

[gasps]

O trembling woods,

o wailing groves,

tree of calamity.

Sprout thy tragedy

before all things in creation!

When confronted

by the laws of impermanence,

let all bow their heads!

[gasps]

What an incantation.

Now, watch and learn!

This is the greatest magic

any mortal can utilize!

Level-Eight Nature Magic!

The greatest magic

that I have in my arsenal

as the Man

of a Thousand Abilities!

[rumbling]

[laughs]

[all gasping]

That's it!

He's using his strongest spell!

And we get to see it!

I've never seen

something like this.

[ALISA]

Level-Eight Magic?

[gasps]

Now, grovel before your master!

[RASTER]

Just try to endure this one!

[laughs]

What can you do with

a level one spell like Air Shot

against the power

of my level eight?

[RICK] I'm going to punch

straight through it.

[smirks]

[RASTER]

Is this your ego again,

or have you grown desperate?

Tell me, with practice,

how many times

have you used this spell?

I couldn't say!

Why keep track,

when I mastered it

with almost no effort?

As for me, I've cast this

a hundred million times,

at least.

A hundred million?

Does the 40-something

believe he can fool us

with a bluff like that?

[ALISA] There aren't even

that many seconds in a year.

Isn't that physically

impossible?

It is possible with the use

of space-time magic.

Rick has actually done

what he claims.

[gasps]

Enough!

I'm tired of listening

to this drivel!

Now, I'll do as I did

to that fossil of an examiner

and shatter that dream

into a hundred million pieces!

[grunting]

Level-Eight Nature Magic,

Yggdrasil God Impact!

Level-One Nature Magic,

Air Shot!

[both gasping]

[RASTER] Now, you will die,

you third-rate oaf!

[laughing]

[Raster grunting]

[growling]

No, it can't be!

I'm special!

This can't happen

to a noble like me!

[screaming]

[both whimpering]

[grunting]

[ANGELICA]

He lost?

[sighs]

[RICK] What's wrong,

Mister First-Rate Elite?

My dream's fine.

Can the same be said for you?

[indistinct chatter]

That was incredible.

He did it!

Hmm.

[gasps]

You've done well,

that was a good showing.

Your form has improved.

Yeah, dude, I was impressed

by your level of control and--

- Congratulations, Ricky!

- Hey, it's my turn!

- [giggles]

- Thank you all so much.

Great job, you were

simply amazing out there!

Oh, it wasn't anything special!

[chuckles]

I guess I've gotten stronger

than I thought

these last couple of years.

Actually, I don't know

what made me think

I was so weak to begin with.

Truly, it's thanks to you.

Please, raise your head.

Hold it high.

Yeah, c'mon.

Thanks are nice,

but we're not interested

in stuffy formalities.

I agree!

Let's celebrate

with food instead!

You did well today, be proud.

[footfall]

[RASTER]

I'm fine, let me go!

[ANGELICA] Nothing about you

looks "fine" right now!

You need to find

some medicine or a healer!

[grunting]

I told you, I'm fine.

[RICK]

Hey, North, er, Raster!

I bet you have

unanswered questions

like how could a genius lose

to some geezer like me.

Am I right?

[RASTER]

How dare you?

Come to kick me while I'm down?

All right, 40-something,

my big brother is

What's happening?

I limited the number

of techniques that I use

and focused my training

on the few I chose.

[RICK] First,

refine a single technique.

Practice it

until you wanna throw up.

[groans]

Well, just take it as some

advice from an old man!

I have high hopes for you!

[RICK]

Get back out there, sport!

[grunting]

At your next promotion test

I will go

to any lengths necessary

to ensure that

I'm your examiner again.

And that day I'll be the one

who comes out on top.

You'd better be ready,

third-rate.

Wait, slow down!

[whimpering]

Huh?

[ANGELICA]

Now, let's get you to bed.

[Rick sighs]

[MALE ANNOUNCER 3A]

Thank you all for waiting.

We will now announce

who has passed the E-rank test.

4-0-0-1.

- [MALE ANNOUNCER 3A] 4-0-0-3.

- Huh?

- [MALE ANNOUNCER 3A] 4-0-0-4.

- Ha!

[MALE ANNOUNCER 3A] 4-0-0-8.

4-0-1-0.

4-0-1-4.

4-0-2-1.

- [MALE ANNOUNCER 3A] 4-0-2-7.

- That was me!

- [MALE ANNOUNCER 3A] 4-0-2-8.

- I'm good too!

[MALE ANNOUNCER 3A]

4-0-4-1.

You know, maybe we should've

waited for the announcement.

It's okay.

[MIZETT] Why not have

the table ready in advance?

- Huh?

- Yo, excuse me!

- What time do you get off work?

- Hmph!

[MALE ANNOUNCER 3A] Moving on

to numbers above 4-0-5-0.

4-0-5-5.

4-0-5-7. 4-0-6-0.

[REANETTE]

Mister Rick, you seem calm.

What happened

to that nervousness

from the preliminary exams?

Oh, well.

[RICK]

Talking about my dream,

I remembered some stuff.

[sighs]
