[April] And we are moteliers.

We take gross, old motels,
and we bring them back to life.

[Sarah] We're business partners,
best friends,

and we're building a motel empire.

Four years ago, we quit our day jobs,

took every cent we had,
and put it into a dingy roadside motel.

We took the crusty old Sportsman,

and turned it into the new it girl,
The June.

And we renovated it all by ourselves.

[April] We had zero experience
in hospitality,

and zero professional experience
in design and renovation.

It may seem crazy, but it worked.

The June Motel was a huge success.

We were featured in everything
from the New York Times

to Huffington Post to Vogue.

[Sarah] Rooms went
from $90 to $500 a night,

and we've been sold out ever since.

Now, we're doing it again.

[Sarah] Oh, my God. We're here!

[Sarah] Sauble Beach is on Lake Huron.

It's three hours from Toronto
and five hours from Detroit,

and it's home
to our biggest challenge yet.

[Sarah] This motel is way bigger,
way harder,

and way more money than our first motel.

It has 24 rooms, a pool, and a restaurant.

to start asking that question.

so we need to make it work.

for $1.4 million dollars.

We've personally guaranteed it
with our homes.

We literally have no other option
other than succeeding here.

Motels all over North America
have typically been family-run operations,

and they would have
these apartments attached to the motel.

…before this is
a comfortable place to live.

[Sarah] So much work.

[April] We're gonna Junify this place.

-Junify is a word that--
-We invented.

That means taking a place
that's not pretty

and finding ways
to make it really special.

[April] It's the bold, playful decisions,

like the wallpaper, the beautiful
vintage things, lots of plants.

And, frankly, a lot of spray paint.

[Sarah] It's clever, it's pretty,
and in an affordable way too.

[April] It's all about the high-low mix.

-Should we pick rooms?
-Sure!

[April] Back to roommate life.

-Wow!
-[Sarah] It's a room!

I like it better than the kitchen!
Kinda digging the natural light.

I did not think I would have a roommate
at the age of 35.

It's really giving off a strong '70s feel.

Which is a good thing.

I kinda wanna embrace that the whole motel
has that '70s vibe going.

Number one thing is brighten up the space.

the general manager of the property,

and the project manager
of the renovations.

Three girls living together…

[April] Courtney worked with us
for one summer at The June Motel,

and she was so bright and keen.

Courtney has no experience
as a project manager of a renovation.

She's also 21 years old,
but she's smart and she's hardworking,

and we know she can figure it out.

And she's gonna be here in a week.

-I need a warm coffee before we unpack.

[April] Wow, I guess this is what
a beach town looks like

-in the dead of winter.
-[Sarah] Yeah. Pretty dead around here.

[Sarah] Only 2,000 people live
in Sauble Beach year round.

It's a seasonal beach town
surrounded by mostly farmland.

That's not looking open at all.

[April] It's, like, actually
just boarded up.

Before buying this motel,
we had never been to Sauble Beach.

But we heard of Bruce Peninsula, which
is totally having a moment right now.

In the summer, it's so beautiful.

It's caves and turquoise blue waters,
sandy beaches, and world-class sunsets

on the fourth largest lake in the world.

It has to seem like an attractive,
cool spot to live.

This is going to set the tone
for everything else we do.

The moneymaker is the motel,
not this space.

I'm definitely the more… responsible one?

Sarah thinks through everything, very
detailed, very logically. I'm impulsive.

We're capable of,
on a really tight budget,

making this the Instagrammable space
that we're looking for.

I mean, that is what we do.

If we're not ripping out
this entire kitchen,

what I'm thinking is a statement color
of pink or yellow for the cabinets.

And then if we're not ripping it all out,
like, can we at least rip these out?

[Sarah] So, if we take the cabinets out,
do the shelves go all the way across?

Yeah, I think two shelves
all the way across.

We have to distract the eye
from how bad the cabinets are.

[Sarah] Some cool, like,
vintage glassware, plates…

[April] We're gonna do
a new dining room table,

a statement pendant above it, new chairs,

and then I would do
a bar cart in the corner.

a motel nail salon for a really long time.

it feels like this custom, dramatic look.
