I asked Kate, um, Kate lots of questions,
but the answers were really short.

That can be hard, then, if your date
or your friend is giving short answers.

So, there's different kinds of questions
that we can ask her, right?

Some of the questions we can ask
have sort of short answers.

If I asked you,
what's your favorite animal?

A gorilla.

A gorilla. That's very interesting.
Now, if you say "a gorilla,"

and I say, "Okay..."

We're done.
We have nothing left to say, right?

Right.

But I could say,
"Tell me more about that."

Okay. I like gorillas
because they're animals with hands,

and they look like humans

since they have hands and butts like us
and ears like us. Does that make sense?

It totally makes sense.
So what'll happen is,

you can ask Kate anything,
even if it's a short answer,

and whatever she says,

then you can say,
"Oh, really? Tell me more about that."

And she'll talk more about herself.

Yeah, tell me, you look like
you're feeling nervous right now.

Are you feeling nervous?

-Um, yes, Jennifer.
-Tell me what you're nervous about.

Hey, the truth is,
I get worried when I go on dates

that I'll be out of things to talk about,
and I won't know what else to talk about.

It's not your job to have to come up

that if there's ever a point
where you can't think of what to say,

you could always say,

even if I'm quiet, um, sometimes,
that doesn't mean I'm in a bad mood.

Do you put a lot of pressure on yourself

to always be making sure
people don't think you're in a bad mood?

I do.

is I hear that you feel a lot of pressure...

I'm Journey. I'm 18,

and I have autism spectrum disorder.

[Cian] Haven't heard it called that
in a while.

I know, right? Very fancy and long.

[Cian] So, how old were you
when you were diagnosed?

I was 17.

[Cian] Okay. And how was that for you?

I was actually really excited.
I... I had done my research on my own,

like, "Okay, I kinda think I have autism."

My mom was like,
"Yeah, I kind of figured."

[Cian] Did it answer
a lot of questions you had about...

Yes! I used to think
I was crazy and be like,

"Why do I feel like I'm the only person
that acts like this in this situation?"

And, "Why do I get upset at this noise
that nobody else does?"

And so once I got the diagnosis,

I was like,
"Oh, that makes a lot of sense why!"

Like, "I definitely have that."

When I tell people I'm autistic,
they're like,

"You don't seem autistic to me.
I never would have guessed."

So I think people make a lot of judgments

without really knowing that autism
can occur in any type of person.

{\an8}[jaunty music playing]

This is my room, and it is awesome.

It has everything that I like in it.
All of my favorite things.

I painted that cat
in a bowl of mac and cheese

'cause I thought it was funny.
I painted this cake.

I like this one a lot more
than a lot of my other paintings

because it combines baking and painting,
which are two things I like,

so I like that 'cause it expresses me.

This is a sea otter
that I drew out of oil pastels.

There's always room
for more sea otters in my room.

[Cian] Have you been in a relationship?

No.

I wish! But no.

[Cian] Have you ever been on a date?

No again.

[Cian] What gender
are you interested in dating?

Um, women.

[Cian] So, when did you realize
that you liked women?

Um, I don't really know.
I guess I kind of just always have.

My family and friends
are really accepting.

I didn't even have to come out.
I just would say, "Oh, isn't she pretty?"

And they'd just be like, "Yeah. "
So, yeah, nobody really cares. [chuckles]

about Journey

stepping into the dating world
for the first time?

Journey thinks that she's not having
a normal 18-year-old life yet

because she hasn't had a date, so...

And his son?

I didn't even know that was supposed
to be a date until right now.

Dad was like, "Oh, do you wanna go out
with my friend and his son?"

And I was like, "Not really."

And then, like...
and I was like, "Oh, this isn't a date?"

He was like, "No, no.
It's just to hang out."

If it was an established date,

it literally would've been
the worst date ever.

setting you up on a date.

finding someone for you?
