has become big business
for fashion retailers.
Many large brands are
creating year-round festival lines.
In fact, for the millennial
and Gen-Z demographics,
it's becoming tangential
to resort wear.
[Heidi]
From the funky feel of afro-punk
to the hippie looks of Coachella,
to the artistic and over-the-top scene
at Burning Man,
each festival has its own unique vibe.
And one thing is for sure.
Everyone wants to stand out.
I know I do when I go to a festival.
You stand out everywhere.
-[chuckles]
-[all] Yeah!
[Tim] So listen up, everyone.
For your next assignment,
you will be creating a two-look
festival wear collection.
As always, one look should be your
high-fashion runway look,
and one look should be the accessible
interpretation of that runway look.
This is your chance to really
push the creativity.
You will have one whole day
for this assignment.
Wow.
This is crazy. [laughs]
One... whole day?
[Tim]
But you will each have one seamstress
working with you here
in the design studio
during the day,
In addition, you will have one seamstress
working overnight.

Your fashion show will be
a daytime outdoor desert runway.

exactly how I work with color.

represents the festival aesthetic.

At the same time,
I think it's super cool.
[Curtis] Our first stargazing.
I'm looking at planets.
It's so pretty though.

This place is taking me back
to the Dominican Republic
when I was five.
And our Independence Day.
That's also our Carnival.
They dress very colorful
in the huge hats
with peacock feathers.
So I think I wanna bring my culture
to Making The Cut
into a L.A.

[Yannik] I think fabric selection is very
important for this assignment.
I'm already thinking about how I can
mix a black and white fabric.
At the moment,
I'm draping this nylon fabric.
I want to do something crazy.
Deconstructive body, body-suit wise.
But make an accessible look quite simple.
And I want to do a print
on the accessible look.
I am very excited.
[Sienna]
Oh, my God, this is amazing.
[Georgia] This is so cool.
I just want to do
a lot of details in this one.
Since we got such time restraints,
I don't want to go too crazy
and too bold.

Explain your look, Sienna.
This a Chinese lantern festival.

So I'm going to create a man's gown
in the lantern shape.
[Curtis] Cool, I love that.

I'm a little bit concerned because
I want to represent
the real atmosphere
of the traditional Chinese festival.
Nothing like a carnival.
Nothing like a crazy,
dancing music festival.
I want to differentiate myself
from the crowd.

I know I wanted to go a little bit crazy.
I'm using red because it's Carnival.
Carnival is having fun,
it's a lot of music,

That would define who I am as a designer.

bringing to the competition.

-[Georgia] Having a seamstress
in the design studio
is the best thing ever
We can really think about construction,
focus on the design-side of things.
Having the help is incredible.
I'm going more like g*y Pride Festival,
-but in a new way.

[Curtis] My mind went straight to
g*y Pride Festival.
Every year, I try to
make something for myself
to wear to Pride
that's not just so literal rainbow.
Ostrich feathers and rhinestones
and ambrosia fun.
Some really fun playful colors.
As I sit in a pile of denim.
There's also denim. [laughs]

I'm just gonna neaten it up a little bit,

I feel very excited about this assignment
because I really love festivals.
For me, festival-wear is opportunity to
you wearing some things out the box.
Not expected.
-It's almost like fish gills.

You don't need to iron that.
-You just, uh, stitch-- top stitch.

-Yeah.

[Sienna] I'm a little nervous
because I have never done
menswear before.

should include everyone,
be inclusive.
So I was thinking,
let me step out of my comfort zone.

We try to better our best

And so that's always more difficult.
How would you constantly try and do more?
I always try to push my boundaries,
but I had a plan always.
Like, half an hour cutting,
-half an hour this, half an hour that.
-Right.
But I always try to go one step further
and be more creative
and make the best out of it.
[Jonny]
If I could give you one piece of advice,
is... be as true as you can to yourself
as a designer.
If you're passionate about it
and you really stand behind it,
and even if you stumble or fall,
just be proud of what you do.
[Esther]
Speak to what you really believe in.
Use this time here for you.
-For yourself.

You see how Making the Cut
totally transformed our lives.
-Your business just exploded.

I mean, she has more followers than me.

Well, for me, it transformed me a ton

It has been
a Hollywood filming location since 1905.
How fabulous is that?

Admittedly, I am not very knowledgable
about festival wear so I learned a lot
from the designers.
But, Heidi, I reminded myself
this morning.
In 1969,
I and a group of fellow school students
went to Woodstock.

What were you wearing?
I was wearing a navy blue blazer,
gray flannel pants and penny loafers.
And I was in mud up to my ankles.

together
with a sheer over it,
but the fabric just reads so cheap.

I just got sad after seeing today's show.
It was just one bad look after the next.

so you rather went boring.

our expectations are high,
because all of you are really good

This opportunity is so major.
The selling, the exposure,

When I was six and seven,
I used to wait for Carnival.
It was the only day that my mom would do

So I went to that moment and I picked the
color red
for this assignment.
Your first look, you see
your beautiful hand of draping.
It was probably one of the best pieces
going down that runway.
But then your second piece
was like...

It's awful.
It has potential.
If it's well made, Heidi, I swear--

With the first one,
I loved how it's almost like
one of your evening gowns,
cropped in half.
Like a crop-top,
which I think is very like, festival.

Coachella's fields wearing that.
And then the other one
was just kinda like,

I decided to work with
the metallic fabric
because this reflect the light.
I really loved your first look.
The second look had a lot of problems.

That second look was just impossible.
That was shameful, honestly.
The fabric shoved into the pants
in front of the panties,
I mean, that was unthinkable... to me.
Making that decision
where she almost had, like, Depends,
it was so unattractive
and so ill-fitting.
The bodysuit didn't even fit.

Seeing the pin on her shoulder...
was shocking.
It's beneath you.
And it's beneath us.
So many wrongs.
It was so disappointing.
I feel so sad before the show,
because of the pins, because the trouble
with the underwears,

My collection was inspired by
Chinese festival.
I want to show the atmosphere,
the culture,
um, and the mood.
My brand is not like celebrating
something too extreme or too sexy.
That's not my style.
And this time also's my first time
dress-up male model.
So it took me a lot of time
going back and forth.
Well, it did really seem,
hearing your explanation.
In one way, I understand
a little bit better
because, let's say, your accessible look,
I found extremely conservative.
And... boring.
The runway look, I didn't like it all.
I didn't like the pleating.
I-- I couldn't imagine wanting to wear it.
I was kinda lost on both.

Seeing the bra was a real problem.

problem, you know,
for this stage in the competition.
And unfortunately, it just--
the complete look was-- was not there.

a special experience in my life.

When I think of festival,
I think of summer

With the runway look,
I went with a...
with a corset and with the top
and the thong.
I did like the concept of it all.
I loved how you draped it around her.

I did see that little bit of underboob,
which was a nice surprise.
You know, looking at your accessible look,
is hard for most people...
to wear that look.
Why is that not accessible?
Like, she doesn't show boobs...

go like that to a festival?

something more exciting and fun
and that was plain.
I understand it's part of your look.

in the first look

she had to wear
after she had her children.
The bodysuit did not fit.
I couldn't tell if it was
sagging or bunching

You really left us with nothing.

I make an outfit for myself.
So, I like to incorporate
romantic elements,
and colorful elements
that aren't as literal.
Your accessible look to me
does not stand out,
because of the color, there is no volume.
I was so bummed because you almost
went home a few weeks ago,
and I really needed you to bring it.
You did a really great job last week,
but it didn't hit for me this week.
I understand.
It just didn't seem exciting
or very wearable.
These tucks around the back of the pants
just look ugly.
Why?
The-- the pants, um, definitely took
a lot of my focus,
and I just got caught up in
working fast and not smart.
I think I'm focusing too much on
accomplishing the assignment
and not being true to myself.
