Previously on Luscinia...

First census of Tehran 1939.

The order of closing public places and

declaring a 48-hour curfew is placed.

Traffic in the city is banned.

Quazarian Jewelry Shop gets robbed

by the six-fingered inspector...

under the order of the police chief.

Haj Khorrami's son prefers to

work in his father's shop...

rather than being a servant of

the government.

Master Mozaffafls daughter-in-law calls

Master and asks for her stolen...

piece of jewelry which was at

the jewelry shop for repair.

The chief of the police is

summoned by Master Mozaffar.

The police chief, anxious about the

summon, threatens Master's...

close servants in order to

get information.

The police chief takes quick action for

locating the stolen jewelry and...

giving it back to Master's

daughter-in-law.

The piece of jewelry is not found

among the stolen sets.

The inspector asks the police

chief for advice.

The police chief confesses to have given

the piece to the princess as a gift.

The inspector is appointed to steal the

jewelry in the opening of the movie...

"Lor Girl" and give it back to its owner.

Part Three

Lor Girl.

Attention! Attention!

Lor Girl, Jafar and Golnar.

The first sound film ever to be

produced in Persian language.

The movie opening will be at the

presence of Princess Honarparvar.

You must have tickets.

You can't get inside just like that.

- Let me in.

- Get out of here.

Off you go.

Sergeant Rajabi, send him away.

Take a turn.

Out of the way.

Get rid of him Sergeant Rajabi.

Get out of here.

Why don't you understand?

What a hassle!

What an honor Princess!

Put your hands together.

Put your hands together.

Put them together.

"Lor Girl"...

Or "The Iran of Yesterday"

and the Iran of Today...

- We're here.

- Yeah. Go on.

Go ahead Shabun.

What movie is it?

Oh! It's already started.

The name is Lor Girl.

Hey! Keep the bread hot.

We'll be back.

Keep it sergeant.

Don't let it get cold.

Sir!

Shabun is here with hot bread.

Hadi, please go to the door.

You have visitors.

Excuse me.

Did you hear what the manager

just said?

I just want you to repeat his words.

I don't have the guts to repeat

the big guy's words.

You go ahead Hassani.

I'm not stupid enough to say

the nonsense he just uttered.

I'm not an idiot.

You do it Mamali.

I'm really sorry.

That's not polite.

I can't tell you what nonsense

this crackbrain just said.

We'll be safe, no worries.

In the words of the manager...

Stop it Mamali. It's risky.

Shabun treats friends and enemies

the same when he sees red.

Right. Boss beats the hell out of

everyone when he flies into a rage.

But he just gave me full powers,

didn't he?

- He did.

- Okay then.

But you back down.

- Boss?

- Yes?

- Will I be safe no matter what I say?

- You will be safe.

For the sake of all those pretty angels

out there just level with me.

- Will I be safe?

- You will be safe.

All right.

The manager said that today's movie...

I did not say anything impolite.

I courteously mentioned that the new copy
of the movie Lor Gil under the name of...

Jafar and Golnar has been opened at the
presence of Her Majesty, the princess.

Please wait till the next show time.

You think we are here without invitation?

Hossein!

- Hassani?

- Mamali!

Boss!

Shabun, you and your respectable

friends didn't arrive on time.

We could not keep

Her Majesty waiting.

I don't get it! How is it that the prince

takes priority over Shabun?

I don't buy that.

Hossein! Get down to business.

Couples are dismissed.

Let's beat the hell out of those guards.

Bring out your things and let's go for it.

It's too heavy.

Do you need a hand?

You don't need to take the trouble.

What are you doing?

What do you want?

You must know better.

Enter!

Please get up.

She's speaking Persian.

Just like you and I do.

Throw them out!

Get in.

What a hectic situation!

Let's do it boss.

Shabun!

How was our performance?

We were a part of that too.

I have good news for you

from my boss.

Your guy sentenced to death

is out of danger now.

The worst they can do now is to keep

him behind bars for two years, top.

- No way!

- I'm serious.

Right on!

Way to go.

At your service.

Excuse me.

Open the door.

Hello Chief.

Please go ahead.

Master Mozaffar and I are

meeting up here today.

I guess you are a little early then.

Today, he is attending the monthly meeting
of the board of maternal support.

Master Mozaffar is the guest of honor.

The meeting will be over in 15 minutes.

So I prefer to wait, drink some

coffee and have a chat.

Welcome anyway.

- What would you like to have?

- Coffee.

- Inspector?

- Lemonade.

Two bottles.

Mint and strawberry flavors.

Sure.

Today, you are meeting a great man.

Take it as your reward.

I hope you are not one of those who
wouldn't enjoy the king's company.

Have you ever read Calila e Dimna?

It has many salutary tales.

I don't even read papers in full.

I only read the highlights.

I never read books.

Perhaps it is because of my

unfulfilled childhood wishes.

When I was a child, I always wished

to have a school backpack.

Here you go sir.

Hot coffee.

And chilled lemonade.

I choose our own drinks over

this colorful water.

I have no idea what is in those bottles.

Human blood.

Humans and their words!

Living people either talk or eat to

show they are still breathing.

In any case, it's better to share

feelings rather than eat junk food.

Tell me about your sweet

childhood memories.

Even when I was a kid,

I was a little man and not a child.

My childhood was full of struggle

and difficulty for making ends meet.

I used to hide under an arch.

I was fed up with police guards.

I had to either run away from them

forever or have them under command.

The second way was better.

So I became a police man.

In order to enter the police department,

I used the pantry window.

Just like a mole cricket.

It appears that you have spent
your childhood in a bed of roses.

Mole crickets are found in canals.

Before that, I had hurt my leg in a

fight with the stray dog in the area...

over the leftovers of the

sheep food restaurant.

I used to be treated kindly by police

guards every time I bought them...

matches and cigarettes limping

here and there without getting tipped.

That was how I was

put in charge of that pantry.

Soon after, I got my hands on

prison's pantry by bribing people.

I knew thieves better than police guards.

I got close to the prisoners and

worked as a mole for the police.

Then I was employed at security
administration and started...

dealing with confidentiality orders.

My mother worked for an Egyptian

tailor before she married my father.

The Egyptian tailor made clothing for men.

Back then, women did not have

their clothes made by such tailors.

The Egyptian tailor taught my mother

the job in order to make a profit.

My mother started making clothes for women
and the tailor made a fortune.

However, his wife was

a jealous woman.

My mother was supposed to

be a servant there.

The Egyptian tailor found a clumsy

man who was not mentally stabled.

The man married my mother.

My father was all skin and bones.

He had yellow eyes and blue lips.

There was this day when I woke up

with the screams of the tailor's wife.

She was insulting my father that his

wife finally fooled her husband.

My father kept coughing as

he used to smoke hookah.

My mother was gone to Cairo

with the Egyptian tailor.

We neither received a letter

nor anything else from her.

My father was once sitting near

the pool washing his face.

I had climbed a tree to bring

mulberry leaves for my silkworms.

The tailor's wife threw my father's dirty
mattress in the street and started...

calling him names. Then she put hot coals
in his shirt and tried to beat me up.

I jumped down on the

flowerbed to run away.

My father went to the street.

He dragged his mattress under the

shade of a tree and lied down.

Passer-bys thought he's a corpse.

They kept throwing money on him.

But my father wasn't dead. He had

finally found a job after a long time.

He became the beggar of the area.

My parents were both disgraces.

Back then, as an innocent kid, I could

not tolerate that much humiliation.

You never saw your father again?

There was this day in the year
cholera outbreak occurred when...

I passed by our alley.

Nobody recalled me.

I saw people putting my father's

mattress on fire.

The same old dirty mattress.

His dead body was already

taken away before I arrived.

Haven't you heard of the tailor's wife?

I heard that she went insane after

my father's death.

They say she climbed up
the same tree my dad

used to lie under,
and started singing.

She sang for so long that they had to

take her to a lunatic asylum.

Hello.

Good day.

- Hello again.

- Hello.

Master Mozaffar is waiting for you.

- Thank you.

- You're welcome.

Thank you.

Good day.

Please.

This way please.

Why are you standing here?

Back to work.

At your service Your Majesty.

- Have a seat.

- You have the permission.

Thank you.

What did you do sheriff?

We're full handed Master.

Well, he deserves to gain everything

with that extra finger of his.

Now take the jewelry back to its owner.

Lady Amin Aqdas is waiting in

the car in front of the door.

You look at animals more than

you look at me.

I carry jewelry and they carry thorns.

What you have lost is not

thorn but jewelry.

That piece of jewelry was a part of me.

Like a bell on a camel.

It was not an ornament but my identity.

My glory and magnificence.

A bell prettier than

those on camels.

A red gem bigger than a fingernail

covered with gold.

This is not my bell.

Like all the things in my mother's house,

My bell smelled of her,
smelled of kindness.

That bell was the very thing which

connected me to my mother.

From childhood to youth.

All rise!

Sit down.

Amin Aqdas Amini.

And then I was ready to depart.

I am leaving mother.

Make this departure easy for me.

I still feel attached to you.

What can I do?

I have not been fed with dry milk.

Let me go and take your

eyes off me mother.

Farewell.

Stealing pieces of jewelry which were

all my memories was not a robbery.

It was a worse crime Inspector.

k*lling all those memories.

Put this back around the princess's neck.

This six-fingered inspector is a tricky

man in the security administration.

Nothing will be hidden from you.

The necklace was found around

a princess's neck.

He removed the necklaces from

her neck so very professionally.

You are exaggerating about it.

You always go to extremes.

And that is why you are so successful

in your current position.

Our government likes exaggeration.

This inspector of yours is

nothing but a weed.

He grows fast but will never be a rose.

- Wild plants grow fast?

- They are good for nothing.

Jack-of-all-trades, master of none.

Not everybody cares about future.

There he comes.

I am sure he does not have

good news for us.

Unfortunately, the special piece of

jewelry was not among these sets.

Strange puzzle!

Who could pick and steal from the sets?

Oh! Pick and steal!

Nice phrase.

The pick of the bunch goes to the boss.

So little things could be

picked and stolen by his inferiors.

Inferiors like a police guard.

I'm sorry.

What happened?

I caught you red-handed.

How dare you pick and steal from me?

Pick and steal, Inspector?

I thought you were Rajabali.

Rajabali asked for leave
this morning. I'm

not sure whether or not
his paper is signed.

Where can I find him now, Sergeant?

If Master Nayeb signed his paper, he
must be on his way to Lavasan right now.

I need to get there before the dark.

Right away.

You will have it in less than 3 minutes.

Watch the shoulders.

All right.

Careful.

I am.

What happened?

- Get the hell out.

- Let me finish ironing this first.

I will take care of it.

Get the hell out.

Go on.

Come in sir.

Sorry I'm wearing underwear only.

Only a pair of ruby earrings.

They are safe. Give me a chance

and I will hand them to you sir.

- Are they in Lavasan?

- No sir, they are in Tehran.

Who let you know I took leave?

Hurry up before you go on leave for good.

Yes sir! Yes sir!

Stop right there in front of

Grand Hotel.

Please.

- Are we here?

- Yes.

Thank you.

Reza, will you wait here or are you

coming with your grandfather?

The conversation between old

people will bore you in there.

- I'm going inside with you.

- You will feel restrained.

You will have to keep silent until

we are done with our conversation.

Here, you can sit down, stand up, watch

the street and buy yourself lemonade.

Anything you want.

You can even buy yourself nuts,

frozen drinks, donuts and everything.

- Here is 2 Rials.

- 2 Rials?

Do not spend it all. Spend half of it

on refreshments and save the rest.

. Okay grand pa.

- Good boy.

Brother, keep an eye on my boy.

I will be right back.

No worries. Go ahead.

- Be a good boy.

- Sure grandpa.

Let me help you.

Watch your steps.

- You should feed your horse.

- Sure.

- Watch your steps.

- I will not be back earlier than an hour.

I fooled the kid.

- Hello sir.

- Hello dear.

- I am meeting Master Mozaffar.

- Please go ahead.

He is usually at the café at this time.

Go inside.

On your right.

This is for you.

It is a mere nothing.

Thank you.

My dear, the kid in that carriage

is my grandson.

Keep an eye on him and do not

let the carriage driver take him.

- I'm afraid he kidnaps the child.

- Don't worry at all.

I will keep a close eye on the carriage.

Please go inside. No worries.

Watch the stairs please.

Master.

What would you like to have?

- Special ice-cream.

- Two of them?

Three.

All flavors in different bowls.

Cream, coffee and strawberry.

Right away.

After His Majesty's trip to Turkey,

people were ordered to wear hats.

Master Golbahar is still faithful

to Pahlavi Hat.

However I am always miles away.

And left out!

I remember back then when

Pahlavi Hat was in style...

- People were actually forced to wear it.

- That is right.

One of the hat makers created

something new.

He used to attach brims to

hats at that time.

His business was flourishing.

He would get half a Rial to make a Pahlavi

Hat out of a Turkish hat
in a blink of an eye.

My wife actually played a better trick.

She used buttons to attach

a brim to my hat.

I button the brim in public places

and unbutton it at home.

This innocent society is always

taken in, no matter what.

On the contrary,

the society is only faking it.

Right.

People are masters in their places

living their own ways.

These people have never been

cringed to power.

They have actually kept their faith and

beliefs during all historical events.

You are right.

But in appearance they are

all obedient citizens.

And that is how they have the

governments overthrown.

You must remember how you brought up

an excuse not to release
a gramophone record.

The main purpose of keeping songs on

gramophone records was actually...

protecting the sound of

Persian instruments...

which was done previously in England,

France and Germany by Persian artists.

Actually it was only you who

refused to cooperate.

Then a branch of "His Master's Voice"

was established in Mumbai.

It made us think you might prefer a

trip to India over traveling to Europe.

We assumed you might accept the invitation.

Yet again you made an excuse.

Separating from my grandkids,

the children of my daughter...

who was cut off in the prime of

life was somehow impossible.

Today, when your messenger arrived

and invited me to Grand Hotel...

one of them insisted on

accompanying me.

Now he is waiting in the carriage

in front of the door.

- Master Golbahar?

- Yes?

There is no need for being so considerate.

You and your family take priority

over everybody in this hall.

You are too kind.

- Please invite your grandson inside.

- I am not standing on ceremony.

It is better for himself to wait outside.

Kids do like carriage rides more

Than serious conversations.

He shall have more fun in the

carriage out there.

Mohammad Hassan?

Take some ice-cream to

Master's grandson.

Sure.

It is true when they say people

are greedy.

Please take two.

The carriage driver might want some too.

Here you are.

This is sent by your grandfather.

No, thanks.

I've bought myself one already.

One of them is for you.

Thank you sir. But I have never tasted

such things. I don't even know its name.

Anyway, I will leave the tray here.

Maybe you will have a craving for it.

- It tastes better with wafers.

- Enjoy.

I like it better with wafers.

The contract for printing

the book is ready.

It will be signed by the manager

of the corporation and you.

At any price you consider.

After my daughter died of tuberculosis...

I could not let my grandkids be

raised up by a stepmother.

With the agreement of my son-in-law

who consequently remarried...

I decided to look after the kids myself.

A while ago, their grand mother departed

this life as well and joined her daughter.

The very day my daughter was buried,

my wife bought a grave
next to her daughter's.

The mother and daughter could

not get separated.

To these kids, I was more like

a grandmother than a grandfather.

Cooking, cleaning and washing the dishes

and their clothes never even let me...

visit the shrine here

let alone travel to India.

In that case, we should meet him

in his house the next times...

so we can be of less trouble.

Our aim is to have the book Tunes

and Voices by Abdolqader
Maraqi published...

in order to introduce today's masters

and the principals of old music.

Old wise people know all about

henchmen out there.

They have not even forgotten

me and my grandmother.

Nice colorful ice cream!

It's very delicious.

I wish I had yours.

Mozaffar Library has succeeded to find

to more copies of this valuable book...

in Netherlands and Istanbul which

have been photographed by our students.

The copies will be offered to you.

Moreover, there is an article by

Abdolqader in the Encyclopedia Islamica.

Please remind me to offer you a

translated copy of the related chapter.

The good thing about foreign researches

is that they are done based on...

reliable sources using

criticism of science.

Reliable sources using

However, this criticism lacks

illumination and spirituality.

In this regard, your delightful presence

will complete the whole thing.

Grand Hotel.

Can I help you?

- This is Amin Aqdas.

- Hello my lady.

- Is Master there?

- Yes he is.

- Of course he is in a meeting.

- I have news for him.

- Is it urgent?

- Yes.

Sure my lady.

Hope it is good news.

- Of course it is.

- Very nice.

- I need to talk to Master.

- I will put you through right away.

Yes. Please hold.

Father, such a lucky man you are.

Your sweetheart's stolen jewelry

has been found.

I was connected to my mother's

house once again.

My bell was ringing once more.

I am so glad to hear the news.

My dear friend, why are you

sitting all alone?

Join me and Master Golbahar.

I was saying.

A few minutes ago, I heard good

news which made me overjoyed.

It is the same feeling I had on

the other night in Shemiran.

That magnificent night.

Birds were delighted by Master's voice.

The nightingale was singing.

And the lunar was chanting.

My old hands are rusty as it has been

long since I touched an instrument.

Your voice should not necessarily

be accompanied by an instrument.

In the words of Abdolqader;

The human pharynx is the
best of all instruments.

The human pharynx is an

instrument made by the Lord.

So the sound is much nicer

than any other instrument.

Master Golbahar, sing that song

with the poem of Malek Al-Sho'ara.

You must be aware that the song has been

banned under His Majesty's order.

- The composer was sent into exile.

- Go ahead.

I will take care of His Majesty.

There is no need to worry.

We are safe here.

But...

Thank God there is no police

man here either.

Go ahead and sing it Master.

This is the last picture of late

Esmail Mohammadi.

The cast and crew of Luscinia dedicate

this episode to the great old man.

Rest in peace Esmail Mohammadi.
