- It's a kite boarding comp down at Pancella tomorrow.

Thought I might go down, take a few photos.

- Well, there's not as much competition

in the kite boarding mags.

If I get a good shot, one of them might publish it.

- $ prize money, wow.

- Yeah it is, you should enter.

- Get real, Deb and Simmo wouldn't let me.

No outside comps, remember?

- Well, what they don't know won't hurt 'em.

- Oh yeah!

[laughter) [cheering)

- Hey Anna, we're going for a surf, wanna come?

- You guys go, I'll catch up.

How are you getting down there?

- Train, I rang my grandma, she lives just outside Bonjela,

she's gonna pick me up from the station, why?

- It's not like a regular competition.

There are no heats.

- I know, it's an expression session.

Everybody's out there at once,

you go out two days to show off all your stuff.

- What about Deb and Simmo?

- It's Saturday, you're having some time off.

- I would need someone to help me land the kite,

reckon you could do it?

- Easy.

[upbeat music)

- Hey Anna!

- Hi.

- Just checking that you still wanna do

that extra session this afternoon?

You wanted some help in the gym.

- Ah yeah, sorry Deb, can we reschedule?

- Yeah sure, what's up?

- Science project, me and Joe are doing ours together.

- What's it on?

- Reproduction, yeah, flannel flower.

We need to go to the national park.

- Okay, well have fun.

[techno music)

- Oh I'm starving.

- Same, let's go get an egg and bacon roll.

- Oh perfect, I could eat two plus a milkshake.

- You coming Fly?

- Can't, I'm supposed to be meeting Heath

to start on the science project.

[dog barking)

- This is Sonny, grandma took him in from the pound

about a couple of months ago.

- Gorgeous!

- Well he might be gorgeous,

but he's a pain in the backside,

he won't do a thing I tell him.

- Joe, have you seen Heath?

- Nope, I haven't seen him all morning.

- What time did he say he'd be there?

- Nine o'clock.

I waited three quarters of an hour in the boiling heat.

It was his idea we do this stupid project together

in the first place.

- Oh, will you chill out?

The project's not even due for another two weeks.

- Yeah and Anna's the only other person crazy enough

to give up her Saturday in the name of science.

- What's Anna doing hers on?

- She and Joe are doing something on flannel flowers.

I don't know, they took off earlier this morning.

- Joe's not with Anna, he's down the beach.

- Oh, I'm sure that's what Deb said.

Maybe she went on her own.

- Fly, you okay?

- Yep.

- No you're not, you're upset about Heath.

- I'm not upset, I'm just annoyed.

- Well why don't you ring him them,

ask him why he didn't show?

- Why should I call him, he's the one who didn't show?

- Oh Fly come one, will you just ring his mobile

and sort it out?

I'm sure there's a really simple explanation.

[rock music)

- We're just about to get underway folks

so get to the registration and sign up.

Conditions are perfect, remember this is the two-day

expression session to go out there,

express yourself, and have fun.

Oh Fly, yeah, oh, I totally forgot I'm so sorry.

Where am I?

I'm down the coast visiting my grandma.

Yeah, she's not well.

It's her heart, you see she's got a dog,

and it needs feeding and her neighbors are away.

Yep, I'm really the only one that can do it.

- He forgot.

- See that's what I thought.

- So where is he?

- Down the coast, he reckons his grandma is sick.

- Hang on, isn't Heath pretty close to his grandma?

- But why would Anna lie to Deb

about going somewhere with Joe?

- Yeah, it sounds a little bit sus to me.

- What, you're thinking that Anna

and Heath have gone somewhere together?

- I don't know, it certainly looks that way.

[rock music)

- You with the mag?

- No it's just a hobby of mine, really, you?

- I'm from Kite Rider, our magazine is one of the sponsors.

- Yeah really, 'cause I thought if I got any good shots

I'd take it to a few mags, see if anyone's interested.

- I think you'd be wasting your time, to be honest.

We're pretty much got the whole comp covered.

[mellow music)

- That's where they've gone,

Bangella Kite Boarding competition.

- She entered the competition and he's gone down

to help her land the kite.

- Is Anna's kite boarding gear down there?

- It's missing, you were right.

- Oh well, now we know.

But why couldn't he just tell me?

- You should give him a serve.

- I agree, Fly you're too nice about things.

- You guys had an arrangement, he stood you up,

and he needs to know that that's not good enough.

[mellow rock music)

- So it's midway here in the junior's girls session,

bit of a change here folks,

we got Lorri Glynn, who's now moved in to first place

with points, second, Jilly Watson with points.

- Can't work it out, you're not scoring.

You're doing great, you're doing better than most

of them out there.

- I think you might be a bit biased.

- Hey, here's the evidence.

Now where are these anonymous judges anyway?

They don't know talent when they see it.

- You said you were visiting your sick grandma.

- Okay I lied, but only because Anna didn't want Deb

and Simmo to find out that she was going in the comp.

And I'm sorry you dragged yourself all the way down here,

but for what it's worth, I'm glad you're here.

- Apology accepted.

So where is she?

- She's out the back there.

[upbeat music)

- Deb and Simmo around?

- No.

- It's a two day comp but I'm not going very well.

- You're German champion in your age group,

you must be shoeing it in.

- She should be, she's easily as good as the other girls,

she's just not scoring.

- I reckon it's simple, she's not scoring

because she's not putting herself out there enough.

I reckon you need to do something to get their attention.

- I'm a sports person, not a performer.

- All I'm saying is you can't afford to be shy.

- Heath, I heard your grandmother wasn't very well.

- It's a bit weird having a competition based

on personality more than ability.

- I agree, so we have to help Anna get noticed.

The dog just took the board back to her.

- [Announcer] Well, it's a team effort out there,

we've got a young girl and her dog

working in perfect harmony.

She does the kiting, he brings the board back.

That's got to be one of the sickest tricks

I've seen all season.

[Sonny barking)

- Yeah I do.

- How long did it take her to train that dog?

- Where is everyone?

- Down the coast with Heath.

His grandma passed away.

- Really?

- Yeah, his mom must be pretty upset.

I wonder if we should find out if she needs any help.

the multiple European junior pro winner!

- You were the one covering this girl

over the last couple of days weren't you?

- Yeah, that's right.

- I'd like to take a look at some proof sheets,

see what you got.

- Yeah sure.

- Perhaps you give some of your cash

to your new kite boarding companion, Sonny.

In addition to the prize money,

Anna's also won a place

on the South Coast junior kite boarding team,

they'll be leaving in a month

and touring for weeks overseas, what about it guys.

The only thing is, we won't be able

to pay for Sonny's airfare.

Can you manage to go without him.

- Why didn't you say something?

- Because I knew you wouldn't want me to enter.

- Well you got that right.

- Didn't you think we'd eventually find out

once you'd won the competition?

- Kind of hard to keep it a secret when you're touring

with the South Coast kite boarding team.

- But I didn't think I'd win,

I didn't think I'd get on the team.

- Anna you must've known you were in with a good chance.

You were junior girls champion in your own country.

Still, I haven't had a lot of practice lately.

- Enough, this tour starts in a month.

You can't finish the year here if you go.

- Looks like you got a big choice to make.

- They're asking me to choose between the two sports I love.

I can't do that.

- Maybe you should consider the kite boarding tour.

It's a great opportunity, you love the sport,

you're good at it, and it's a sure thing.

Whereas no matter how hard to your try

in the Solar Blue comp, you've only got a one in four chance

of winning, anything could happen.

If you gave up the kite boarding trip

and you didn't win the wildcard,

you'd be pretty disappointed.

[mellow music)

- Yeah?

- The prize money, I decided to give it back.

I'm not going on tour.

- You sure about this?

- Yep, I came to Australia to see if I could make it

as a surfer, and I still want to find out.

- That's great Anna, but only if you're sure.

- There are other tours, and I know that I can kite board.

I said I'd stay for the year,

and that's what I'm going to do.

- Well 'cause I just found out one of the photos

I took of you is going on the cover of Kite Rider.

They're devoting the whole issue to the touring team.

- So?

- Well if you pull out they pull the photo.

Can't you just hold off on telling them?

- Hold off?

- Yeah just a couple weeks until the magazine goes to print.

- That wouldn't be fair.

- Fair, okay, what's fair about this?

My first opportunity to get a photo published,

and you wanna go and do the right thing?

[rock music)

- [Fly] They might still publish your photo?

- Yeah, just not on the front cover.

It'll be black and white and buried on page .

- Oh well, maybe now you can concentrate

on your assignment.

- For your information I have done my half

of the assignment, written everything there is to know

about male starfish.

You'll have done your bit about the female starfish,

now we just gotta put them together.

- That's your job.

- Says who?

- I'm doing design and presentation.

- Have you taken assertive pills?

You got all bossy and stuff.

- I just decided I needed to start speaking my mind.

- Yeah? Good.

- Because if everyone was being all straightforward

about things, I can be a lot easier.
