- [Brooke] I always think you can tell a lot

about people by the way they dance.

Look at Amy for instance.

She's like a force of nature, totally unstoppable.

Then there's Eric, not much style but plenty of power.

Cory looks like he downloaded the steps from a website.

And Rachel's moving to a jungle beat no one else can hear.

Then there's Mike, Mike?

There he is.

What's he up to?

Mike, what're you doing over here?

- Check out this oar.

It's from the Surf Boat Championship.

- You're looking at an oar?

- Yeah, why not?

There's heaps of amazing stuff here.

- Mike this is a dance, party, not a history lesson.

Come on.

- No, really, I'm fine.

- Well you can't stand around here all night.

- Look, I'm just not a very good dancer, okay?

- So what, you don't have to be good.

- Only people who are can say things like that.

I bet you you were dancing before you could even walk.

- It doesn't matter, no one cares, just enjoy yourself.

Okay, so he dances like a washing machine.

But a really nice washing machine.

- Oi, this is a circuit training not a holiday camp,

get on with it.

- We already did our set.

- Yeah, it's too easy, Simmo.

- Keep going until I say stop.

Cory, goes for you too.

- Okay I'm on it.

- What's going on here, Fly?

- They're training aren't they?

- I can see that.

They're all far too relaxed for my liking.

I need something to shake them up.

Any ideas?

- How about a surprise comp?

- Yeah, not bad.

But let's make it a real surprise.

- And as for you new assignment,

they are due at the end of next week.

- The psychology of learning?

- That's right, you are to observe the process

of someone learning a new skill.

- What kind of skill?

- Your choice.

Anything from playing chess to learning Hindustani.

And you can work in groups of up to five.

- How 'bout six?

- Okay, since the Solar Blue g*ng are clearly inseparable.

(bell rings)

Oh first step is to choose the person and the skill,

and I need that by tomorrow.

- Any idea's to this assignment?

- We could get Mike to teach Eric to cook.

- Let's not attempt the impossible.

- Hey I can cook, I cooked spaghetti

on toast the other night.

- Yeah, my stomach still hasn't forgotten it.

- That's three bucks each, guys.

- I could teach one of you to up sail.

- Yeah, after last time, you can count me out.

- Guys, you've got to see this.

- What is it?

(whistling and cheering)

- Hey, Mikey boy.

(laughing)

- Don't be cruel, he's not that bad.

- [Rachel] He's not that good.

- He just needs to relax.

- A few lessons wouldn't hurt either.

- You can't teach someone to dance.

They can either do it or they can't.

- That's rubbish, anyone can learn to dance.

- Even him? - Yes, even him.

- That's it, we could teach Mike to dance.

- I thought he said not to attempt the impossible?

- I think it's a great idea.

- I'm not too sure.

- Come on, you said anyone could learn.

- What, who's gonna teach him?

- Brooke, you've had lessons haven't you?

- Yeah a couple of years ago.

- Better than all of us.

- He'd never go for it anyway.

- He will if you ask him.

- What's that supposed to mean?

- Oh, nothing.

(laughing)

- No sorry, not interested.

- Come on Mike, think about it.

It could be fun.

- Yeah for everyone else involved.

- Why are you so reluctant?

- Look, I just don't wanna do it, okay?

- Okay, fine.

Forget I asked.

- Oh guys, can you give us a hand for a sec?

We need to get these unloaded.

- Surf skies, what are these for?

- Well you need to practice on something for the comp.

- Comp? What comp?

- Surf ski comp, next week, you're all in it.

- What's a surf ski race have to do with anything?

- I thought we're surfers, not life savers?

- All about competition, 'bout learning to compete.

Surf ski's just a tool to help you

hone your competitive skills.

- But we'll be up against guys who've been

on skies for half their lives.

How do we compete against them?

- That's the challenge.

And they'll be points riding on it.

- Points, I haven't ridden a surf ski in years.

- Most of us haven't.

- Then you better get serious about training tomorrow, hey?

- [Amy] Why are these things so heavy?

- Hey I know, we can do this for our learning assignment.

- Except, everyone's on them, so we have no one left

to do the observing.

- So what are we gonna do?

- Don't ask me, pity someone chickened

out on learning to dance.

- Give us a break, guys.

- Look, if he doesn't wanna do it, it's his choice.

- I know, but now we have to find something else to do.

In a hurry.

- Why's everyone on my back?

I mean it's great for Amy to have a bright idea,

but I'm the one who has to comp.

- It's all right, Mike.

Don't worry about it okay?

(rock music)

- Keep trying, that's the way.

- They're looking pretty frustrated.

- I know, it's exactly what I wanted to see.

- You're a sick man, Simmo.

- No, it's good for them.

Bit of humility nourishes the soul.

That's it, keep at it.

- I still don't understand the point of this.

- What's a bad attitude?

Didn't you see how much everyone else was putting in today?

You apply that to your surfing,

you guys would be unstoppable.

- Okay, but I don't see why we have to be in a comp.

Especially when we have no chance of winning.

- It's not about winning, Mike.

It's about challenging yourself.

You don't try out new stuff, you get stuck in a rut.

Which is where you guys are at right now.

Come on, I think you've earned breakfast.

- Brooke, about those dancing lessons.

- Mike, I told you, it's okay.

- No I want you to be honest.

Do really think I can learn?

- [Brooke] Of course, everyone can dance.

Dancing just a state of mind.

- [Mike] And you seriously think you can teach me?

- Only if you're willing to give it a go.

You can't teach someone that doesn't wanna learn.

- I've had a think, and I want to do it.

- Are you sure?

Why the sudden change?

- I don't know, maybe it's about time I get outta my rut.

- Great, it's a really gutsy move of you, Mike.

- For you too, you have to teach me.

- They said we can use this place anytime

there isn't band practice.

- Cool, let's get set up then.

- So what'd you wanna teach him, Brooke?

I've got hip-hop, pop, rock, we could do country.

- I think we need a real dance.

You know, not just shaking your hips around,

something with real steps and movement.

- Good idea, it'll work better for the assignment

if it's hard.

What's the hardest dance.

- The tango. - The tango.

- What's a tango.

- It's a South American dance, but maybe that's too hard.

- No I think tango's perfect.

It'll make a great presentation for the class.

- No one said anything about dancing

in front of class.

- We thought it'd be the best way to present our project.

- Don't worry about it, Mike, you'll be fine.

Dancing's just a state of mind, remember?

Slide, slide, quick, out, together.

Slide, slide, quick, out, together.

Cross, cross, quick, out together.

- One hour in, and the progress is slow.

Slow and seriously painful to watch.

- Behind, hide, side, front, together.

Quick, out, together.

Okay, enough with the basics,

now we can actually start dancing.

First you need to know how to hold your partner.

So, put your held hand up like this, and hold my right.

(soft music)

- Like this?

- Yeah, um, your palm's a bit sweaty.

- Yeah, sorry, it's a bit hot in here.

- Okay, now your other hand goes on my back.

Quite high.

- Here?

- Yeah, but we're too far apart.

You need to pull me in closer.

- How's that?

- Closer still.

My dance teacher said that the tango is about

two people moving as one.

That should do it.

Okay, let's try.

Music.

Cory, music.

(tango music)

Okay, ready?

Go, slide, slide, quick, out, ow.

- Sorry, you okay?

- Fine, I didn't need that toe anyway.

- Um can we have a break with this?

- In a minute, let's just try it a bit more first.

Slide, slide, quick, out.

- I did it again, my bad.

- It's all right, just keep going.

Slide, slide, quick, out, together.

(tango music continues)

- They're getting better.

Now they're only capsizing about every second wave.

- Doesn't matter, main thing is they're having a go.

Look at Eric, he's concentrating so hard,

he hasn't said a word for five minutes.

Gotta be some sort of record.

(laughs)

- Simmo, isn't this gonna be

a bit embarrassing for Solar Blue?

I mean there's no way they'll be

real competitors by next week.

We're gonna look like a bunch of idiots.

- I know that, they know that too.

That's what'll motivate them to go the extra mile.

They've got too much pride to let themselves down.

Or us.

(tango music)

- How's lesson two going?

- Is he getting any funkier?

- I don't know about funky, but he's gonna get way down.

- What does that mean?

- [Amy] Means, looks like he's getting worse, not better.

- [Cory] Worse?

- The way he going, by lessons five, we'll be lucky

if he can walk.

- Mike you have to concentrate.

- [Mike] I'm sorry, it's not that easy.

- Give him a break guys, it's only lesson two.

- What if he has some sort of like mental block

when it comes to dancing?

- Yeah what if he's like, tango-lexic?

- Tango-lexic?

- We're just worried if he doesn't improve,

this assignment will be a major dud.

- I mean it's not too late to ditch it

and try something else.

- Look, we just need to hang in there a bit longer.

We're talking about one of the hardest dances there is.

He's not gonna crack it on day two.

- But you do think he'll get it in the end?

- Of course, I'm almost sure he will.

- Almost.

- No, I'm sure, okay?

- All right, you've all got the basics down.

- We have?

- So I thought we'd have a little practice comp.

- You mean today?

- I mean now.

All you gotta do is paddle out around the buoy,

first one back wins.

Is everyone ready?

Go!

(rock music)

What'd you say about them not improving?

- Okay, I take it back.

Amazing what a bit of competition and pride can do.

- That's it guys, keep up the pace.

Come on, push it, go!

Good work, well done.

Excellent, done.

- You're really putting % into this, aren't you?

- Course why wouldn't I?

- Well why don't you do the same with dancing?

- Dancing, come on, Brooke.

- No tell me why.

- You can't compare this to dancing.

Not in the same universe.

- They're both about learning a new skill.

- But dancing's just a bit of fun.

- It won't be a bit of fun when we have to get

in front of the class looking like idiots.

- Brooke, I'm really trying, you know that.

- When you're dancing, you're not focused.

You're not mentally in the zone like you are with this.

- The thing is, when we're dancing,

there's so many distractions.

- Distractions, like what for example?

- Like...

(laughing)

Like the others watching me.

- Is that the problem?

- I might be a bit paranoid, but I keep thinking

they're laughing at me.

- Fair enough, easily fixed.

- What, so how're we supposed to video you?

- Yeah we can't do it from out there.

- Trust me, this will only work if you're not here.

Drag, turn, quick, out, together.

Drag, turn, quick, out, together.

You're not turning in the right spot.

Let's watch the tape back and see what you're doing wrong.

- No, no, can we keep going?

I think I'm getting it now.

- Are you sure?

- Yeah. - Okay.

You ready?

- Yeah.

- Drag, turn, quick, out, together.

Drag, turn, quick, out, together.

Mike, you're doing it, you're actually doing it.

- I did it, I can actually turn.

- Yeah, good.

That's a turn.

- Thanks, fans.

- Thank you and goodbye.

- [Amy] Hey.

- Now, where we were.

(rock music)

- Brooke?

Try shifting your weight going back.

That should stop the nose going under.

(tango music)

- Mike you're supposed to drag there, not swivel, remember?

- Sorry, I keep getting those two mixed up.

- You've got all the parts down separately,

now you've just have to put them together.

- That's my problem, I just can't get the sequence right.

- The tango's all about trusting your partner.

I'll take the lead and you just follow me.

(rock music)

- That was brilliant,

why can't dancing be as easy as surfing?

- It is.

- Well maybe for you.

- When you catch a wave you work with it,

you don't try and fight it.

It's the same with dancing, except music is the wave.

- Sounds simple in theory.

- It is simple.

Why don't we try it right now?

- Here, people will see us.

- What people, it's almost deserted.

- There's no music anyway.

- I'll count the beat.

Come on Mike, give it a go.

(soft music)

- You have no idea how silly I feel.

No one else could ever get me to do this.

- I know.

'kay, ready?

Slide, slide, quick, out, together.

Slide, slide, quick, out, together.

- Hey, Amy.

Get the video camera, quick.

- What?

- Check this out.

- Okay I'm on it.

- See, you're doing the whole thing now.

- I am, I really am aren't I?

Was that part of the lesson?

- Absolutely, there'll be a test on it later.

- In case anyone's forgotten,

remember the surd ski comp is tomorrow.

Any final questions?

- Still haven't told us how we get points.

- Yeah and we have to finish in the top five,

there's going to be a lot of zeros.

- I know that, so I've come up with a target time

for each of you, if you break it, you get three points.

- And if we don't?

- It's on a sliding scale depending on how close you get.

You've got seconds leeway till it's back to zero.

- seconds, that's all?

- Well at least there's no pressure.

- We're into the final turn in the men's surf skiing

competition and the build is spread wide.

(rock music)

- [Simmo] How they doing?

- Not bad, I don't think they'll break their targets,

but they're way too far out.

- Come on Solar Blue!

(crowd cheering)

- Let's go, Solar Blue!

(cheering)

- Good work guys, you all scored three pointers.

Let's see how the girls go, hey?

- [Announcer] Get set.

(g*nsh*t)

(cheering)

(rock music)

- Times?

- They're doing fine, but they still

gotta catch those waves.

- Let's go Rach!

- What's Brooke doing?

- Maybe she's looking for a bigger break.

- Brooke, it's too wack, lean back.

- There's no three pointer for Brooke.

- Yeah, go on, Brooke.

- Are you okay?

- Yeah I'm okay, but my shoulder's not.

- [Amy] You okay?

- Did I get anywhere near my target time?

- Sorry, you were on track until that wipe out.

- I tried to stop it nosing in.

- Don't worry about it.

You did really well for one week's training,

and you still get a point for having the guts

to finish the event with that injury.

- Guess that's something.

(soft music)

- So how's it feeling now?

- Not great, it's really stiff.

- That's not so bad.

- Thanks, it's worse than bad.

- Why?

- Our presentation's tomorrow.

- Don't worry, you said the tango was

about trusting your partner, remember?

- I know but--

- Then you'll just have to trust me, won't you?

(glasses clink)

- In other words, ladies and gentlemen.

We chose a student that was almost completely lacking

every skill required.

- Thanks for the flattery, Eric.

- As this short clip will demonstrate.

(pop music)

(laughing and jeering)

- No one told me they were gonna show that.

- Shhh, it'll just make everyone more impressed later.

- By breaking the skills into components,

and adding repetition, our student became more proficient

at the basic steps, eventually.

- Behind, side, front, together.

(laughing)

In, out.

- But, he still had a serious problem putting it

all together into an actual dance routine.

(tango music)

(laughing)

- How much more embarrassment do I need?

- It wasn't until the student was put into

a more relaxed environment.

- And given some additional motivation.

- That he was suddenly able to put

all the pieces together correctly.

(cheering)

- Where did they get that from?

- I don't believe it.

I'm gonna get them for this.
