02x03 - Paradise Lost

Post by bunniefuu »

Keith: hey, alana, get out.
Get out.

Sea snake.

They bite you,
you're done.

I'm gonna go "rambo."

Alana:
of course you are.

Oh, damn it.
Where'd he go?

It's right there.
Whoa.

Narrator:
two strangers...

One man and one woman,
both experienced survivalists,

Have chosen to put their skills
to the ultimate test.

Just one victory, please!

They have no water, no food,
and no clothes.

Their challenge
is to survive for 21 days...

I don't want to go home.

...knowing that the human body

Can only live three days
without water

And begins to shut down
after three weeks without food.

Get out of there!

This is the everest
of survival challenges.

Can a man and woman

Survive alone in the wilderness
naked and afraid?

Keith: I want off.

I want off this island.

Narrator: in the south pacific
lies a large cluster of islands

Whose scenic beauty
obscures a harsh reality.

Beneath crystal-blue waters,

Ravenous blacktip and whitetip
sharks prowl the depths.

Highly-venomous sea snakes
lurk in the pristine shallows.

Along it's white beaches,
the crippling heat

Can climb into triple digits,

And cyclones can devastate
entire islands.

Beautiful on the surface,
but deadly at heart --

This is fiji.

I think the location's gonna be
deceptively gorgeous,

And I think it's gonna be hot.

My name's alana barfield.

I'm in luxury retail --
freelance makeup artist.

I'm definitely a girly-girl

And kind of frilly
on the outside,

But don't judge a book
by its cover.

I grew up hunting and fishing.

I'm good with fire.
I'm good with weapons.

And I can get definitely get
things done.

I'm surprisingly calm.

I'm ready to go get it.

I am nervous, anxiety,
a little bit of fear.

This is now real.

My name's keith busch.

I'm from seattle, washington,
and I'm an a sober coach.

Quitting drugs and alcohol

Was the hardest things
I've ever done,

And I think that this will be
right up there with it,

If not harder.

I was in the army as a reservist
for 10 years.

I love the outdoors.

I've always considered myself

As someone who could survive
under any situation.

But the heat is intense.

I don't have a lot of experience
in this type of environment,

So that's gonna be
a major concern out there --

Getting things done.

Alana: I hope he can
look past my appearance

And doesn't try to treat me
like a damsel in distress

Or a helpless little girl.

That will drive me insane.

This island's not gonna know
what hit it.

Keith: I'm a little nervous.
I might be attracted to her.

Here we go.

There's certain things
that happen to the human body

That I can only pray
don't happen.

See you guys in 21 days.

Alana:
I am single, but romance?

I think it's highly unlikely,
just given the circumstances.

But you never know.

Well, hi there.
I'm keith.

I'm alana.

Nice to meet you, alana.
Nice to meet you.

It's so embarrassing
we wore the same thing.

Keith: I first see alana
and I'm thinking,

"Wow,
here's a very attractive girl,

And hopefully she's capable."

And then, also, I notice
that she's very pale,

So I'm instantly concerned
about the sun and exposure.

Let's see what we got.

Narrator: alana and keith are
each allowed one survival item.

Well, I brought a machete.

Nice.

So at least we'll be able
to make a shelter pretty easily.

I brought a fire starter.

Yes.
Thank you, lord jesus.

Keith and alana are also given
personal cameras

To document their experience.

Day one on the island.

We'll see how we look on day 21.

Of course the woman
would have the map.

Obviously.

Narrator:
from the barren strip of land

Where they have been
dropped off,

Alana and keith
will make their way inland

Through coarse and dense
sawgrass

To this small beach on
the opposite side of the island

That they hope will provide
a more plentiful harvest

Of plant life
and, most importantly,

A source of fresh water.

After 21 days,
they will break camp

And journey around
the east side of the island

Through stingray
and sea snake territory,

Tackling dense jungle,

And finally climbing
the steep lava cliff

To reach their extraction point.

Head out?

Yep. Let's do it.

A small crew
will follow alana and keith

With orders not to intervene

Unless there
is a medical emergency.

Keith: that way?

Yeah. Straight through.

Keith and alana underwent
a tough selection process.

Their physical and psychological
survival abilities

Were evaluated by experts
according to three categories --

Skill, experience,
and mental toughness.

Keith's numerous survival
and outdoor adventures

Earned him high "skill" marks,

But his addictive personality
and need for thrills

Could lead to erratic behavior
and a lack of focus.

Alana ranks
in the top percentile

Of problem-solving
and mental fortitude,

But her reluctance
to rely on others

Could hurt her and her partner.

Keith and alana
have each been given

An overall primitive survival
rating, or "psr."

Keith scores an overall psr
of 6.3, and alana scores a 6.1.

Our survival experts
will reevaluate their psr

At the end of the 21 days.

It's so fricking hot.

Yeah,
it's hot, hot, hot.

It's like when you open
the oven door

And that heat
just blankets out.

I'm a ginger.

There's a reason
that island civilizations

Are not made up
of redheaded people.

This is not
where I'm supposed to be.

This is gonna hurt.

Careful right through there.
It's a lot of thorns.

Oh, yeah.
Sticks with the ferns.

Son of a --

Walking through the grass
is like having paper cuts

On your entire body
from the waist down.

I -- I'm getting
to where I really hate grass.

Hate grass.

Oh,
you're too young to hate.

Doing okay?
Yeah.

My feet
are already bleeding.

Ow.

Careful, it's -- it's painful.

Speak for yourself.

Oh. Oh, my bad.

I'm just fine.

He's a little older
than I was expecting.

He seems like the type who
thinks that women are helpless

And weak and dainty
and can't do anything.

Women are tough.

Ow.

We need to really get a handle
on our water source,

And then
start checking out --

Build a fire.
...possible little --

I'd like to build a fire
before rain gets here.

Yeah.

I plan on boiling
anything we --

Yeah,
always a good idea.

The beach.

We're here.

The beach.
No more grass blades.

Keith: we've used up
a lot of water today,

And we need to replenish
those fluids.

Actually, that's perfect.

We can pull water from there
and boil the hell out of it.

Yeah.

Where's your flint
and steel?

In the bag.

In your bag?
That's what I though.

So, I was just --
wasn't taking over.

Trying to help out.

Alana: I might be picking up
a little bit of stubbornness,

But I'm willing to play sidecar
for a little while,

Just to kind of feel things out,

See how the partnership
kind of develops.

I just feels really damp,

Even just when I grab hold
of this nest to shape it.

Just, the whole thing
just feels damp.

There's no escaping
the moisture around here.

Oh, don't go out. Don't go out.
Don't go out.

Hey, keith!

Bring some wood with you.
We got fire.

That is so awesome.

I'm in love...
With the fire.

But I'm just kidding.

Keith: we're gonna use
a bamboo container.

They're watertight.

You can actually drop hot rocks
in the water

And boil by hot rocks
and k*ll 99% of the bacteria.

Instead of having
our heating pan,

You put the heating pan
in the water.

Come on, baby.

I see bubbles.
I see bubbles.

It does work.

Not even close.

We need a lot more rocks.
Mm-hmm.

Eventually that will boil.

It's never a good idea
to drink untreated water,

And I do not feel like having
the squirts for a few days

Because I was too thirsty
to be smart and boil water.

No.

Don't swallow that.

Perfect growing temperature
for bacteria.

I have to admit defeat.

Narrator:
the average human body

Loses 2 pints of water
per hour of work.

After a 3-mile hike
in the scorching heat,

Alana and keith have easily
tripled that amount.

Without replenishing it,
they run the risk

Of slipping into hypovolemic
shock in under 24 hours.

But now,
with daylight fading quickly,

They must construct
a temporary shelter

Before night descends
on the island.

I'm gonna have to use infrared
'cause it's getting dark.

So, the shelter's
just about finished.

We've got a fire going.

Too bad there's -- I mean,
there might be some water vines

Within...right here, but --

Not tonight.

Yeah, not tonight.
Not tonight.

I'm *bleep* exhausted.

That's one of the things we have
to really look at tomorrow --

Just water supply.

Keith:
I want to go to sleep.

Keith:
morning of day two.

Last night wasn't very good.

It kind of sucked.

It was freezing and, you know,
we're not a couple,

So we're not --
we're not snuggling.

We went back-to-back,
which warmed me up a little bit.

But it was just cold as hell.

So, our biggest issue,
I think right now,

Is sourcing water,
treating water.

We need water.

Narrator: nearly 30 hours
into their survival challenge,

Alana and keith
have yet to secure a method

To purify drinking water.

They head inland

To search for any alternate
hydration source

That won't require boiling.

Keith: hypothetically,
if you chop a banana tree

About 6 inches to 8 inches
off the ground

And then hollow it out,
it will then fill up with water.

Alana: and then we twist up
a little piece of --

I think we have
the same idea.

Yeah, that's gonna work.
That's gonna work.

Ohh, man.
Yeah.

Tastes like a --
battery acid.

Yeah.

I'm thirstier now than I was
the first time I tried it.

You see
that coconut tree there?

Yeah.
That lower...?

Yeah,
I got my eye on that.

We can go chop that down.

It'll take
all of 15 minutes.

It's a big base.

It's gonna take --
it's gonna take all day.

I think we should see
what's on the ground first.

I think.
No. Really?

I've been looking hard
for coconuts.

Alana: I'm seeing a lot
of ambitious ideas from keith

That spend a lot of energy,

And I'm all about
trying to conserve calories,

'Cause we're still operating
on minimal intake.

It will come down.

25% There.

It's a -- it's a third
of the way through.

But I'm starting to get
blisters,

And I don't want to get
blisters.

Well, you don't have to do it
all at once.

15 Minutes.

We have water right here.

If we just work together
on containing it

And making it purified,

That could save
a lot of elbow grease.

I'm worn out.

Oh, come on.

There we go.
There we go.

Timber!

b*tch.

See if it was worth it,
huh?

It's empty.

There's nothing coming out.

He was really adamant

About chopping down
this huge coconut tree.

We have the green coconuts,

Which were empty of water
'cause they were too young.

He tries to perform,

And all it's doing
is hurting him

And using up calories
that we don't have.

We just need to find water.

Keith: I am hurting.

I mean, bad.

We're still thirsty.

This is the worst I've felt
in a long time.

This is the hardest thing
I've ever done.

Narrator: coming up...

Keith: pouring down rain.

The wind just picked up.

You b*tch more
than anyone I know.

Alana: no, I do not.
You are a prima donna.

Yes, you are.

Whatever,
mister "I need a pillow,"

"I need more padding,"
"my feet hurt."

I'm sorry
to let a lot of people down.

Just stupid.
My body can't do it.

I'm just bone-tired.

You know
what? Just leave me alone.

Timber!

It's empty.

Narrator: two days
into their survival challenge

On a remote fijian island,

Alana and keith have failed
to purify

Or secure drinkable water.

Now, on day three,

With their bodies beginning
to shut down from dehydration,

They're in dire need
of a fresh-water source.

They risk further dehydration

By heading inland
in search of fluids.

Keith:
we're heading to get water now.

Part of the trek
is through this area

That really sucks for the feet.

We're gonna go
because we need water.

We decided to start early,
before the heat, today.

That way.
Yeah.

Just trying to find the path
of least sawblade bushes.

Alana: we've had no water.

It's really draining
on my mental state.

It really is.

Keith: it is hot.

It has been the most hellacious
day, as far as heat.

Got to be the hottest day.
Got to be.

Incredible heat.

Yeah, see,
I wouldn't drink that.

Even though it's water.

Alana: if it's rain,
I'd say go for it.

Keith: I don't think
it's rainwater, though.

Narrator: without knowing how
long the water has been there,

Keith and alana risk infection
from parasites or insect larvae.

I'm not gonna pass up
clean water.

Yeah, I think -- I think our
chances are pretty good.

Just, where it is,
it's had some sun exposure.

And there's --
only things I'm seeing in it

Are freshly-fallen
little plant pieces.

It's better than nothing.

Mm.

I think this is as clean
as we're gonna find.

This whole trek was worth it
to me at this point.

Yeah, this is worth the walk,
no matter what.

Keith: clean water.

We both are drinking
as much of that as we can.

Oh, the first, like,
complete gulps.

We got completely hydrated
for the day,

So we'll be good
at least until tomorrow, now.

I drank a lot.

Yeah, I drank a ton.

Narrator: the rainwater pools
have saved keith and alana

From extreme dehydration
for now,

But the tropical environment
is always ready

To throw down a new challenge.

Mm-hmm.

Fricking sucks.

Keith: pouring down rain.

Our humble abode leaks.

Alana: pretty miserable.

Um, and now the wind
has picked up.

Tough night.

I'm just bone-tired.

This is the worst I've felt
in a long time,

As far as body-wise.

My body can't take it.

All right, so,
it's been raining pretty hard

All late night
into the early morning.

Alana?

Keith: something's
giving me diarrhea.

Uh-oh.

And I'm guessing
it's the water.

Well, it's not affecting me,
so maybe it'll --

Something it'll --
maybe it'll just pass.

How you holding up?

You around the edge
of throwing up?

Yeah.

Okay.
For a little bit.

Keith:
my intestines are cramping up.

I feel like vomiting.

I'm 100% dehydrated.

I just feel like
absolute *bleep*

And that's not the bad part.

The bad part is,
I'm letting my partner down,

And she's got to do everything
while I'm bedridden.

I suck right now,
and it's just b.s.

Alana: I don't want
to have to do this by myself,

But if he's gonna get over
whatever this bug is,

He's gonna have to ease up
on the tarzan shenanigans,

Like cutting down the tree,
and just let his body rest.

'Cause if he gets taken out
of here --

I just don't want that
to happen.

I'm just not even gonna
think about that.

That's not an option.
He'll feel better soon.

Keith: by far the worst night
ever in my entire life.

So...

Just can't do it.

I bit off
more than I could chew.

Physically,
it's just not happening.

It's just not --
it won't keep up.

My body will not keep up.

And, um...

Sorry to let
a lot of people down.

I want off.

I want off this island.

Keith: this is harder
than I ever thought it'd be,

And it's reminiscent of the day
that I checked into rehab.

It is the same exact feeling
inside.

And my body is telling me
"that's enough."

So, um...i guarantee you,
I'm not being a wussy about it.

But my body's telling me
"stop what you're doing

Or we're gonna k*ll you."

You got to listen to your body
and what it's telling you.

But one of the main things is,

Is I don't want
to let you down.

Now, are you absolutely sure
you don't have it?

I'm 98%.

What if we just take today

Really, really slowly,
you know?

Let's improve the roof --

Yeah, we do have to
improve the roof,

But if we keep it simple,
we can patch,

Just kind of address the leaks
where they are.

We'll fix the shelter
and stuff,

And I'll go on
as if I'm not leaving.

And, you know, see --
see how I feel.

Knowing how much I went through

To try and get to this point,

I don't want to let down
my family or my partner here.

Ooh,
now it's getting steamy.

Yep.

There's a couple
pretty big ones.

Okay.

Can you stack them
so we can drag them?

Oh, here's some bananas.

Alana!
There we go.

The meal in a peel.

That was so corny.

But I actually like it.

That was definitely
a great find.

This makes me feel great,

To find a nice little bounty
of fruit.

It's awesome.

Nice.

Finding the young bananas,

I think it kind of snapped him
out of his blues.

Keith: this is the hardest thing
I've ever done.

Just gonna approach it
just like I do sobriety --

One day at a time.

If one day doesn't work,
break it down to one hour.

When an hour doesn't work,
break it down to one minute.

We can do anything
for one minute.

Narrator: after another
two-day period of no rain

And searing temperatures,

Keith and alana
once again find themselves

Fighting imminent dehydration.

With their freshwater pools
almost dried out,

They cut new bamboo water
containers and hope for rain.

I'm feeling
really light-headed.

Keith: just take a break.
I'll -- I'll do it.

You're no good to me
passed out.

Yeah, man.

Take this baby home.

I just need a minute.

You doing okay?
No.

It's like I can't breathe,
and I'm dizzy.

I feel like I'm this close
to passing out.

Things get blurry.

It's creepy.

You never got blurry vision

After working out really hard
when it was too hot?

I don't know.
Maybe.

I can't think of a story
about it right now.

Just asking to try and see
if there's some correlation.

The correlation is
I'm *bleep* like, dehydrated

And hungry and sunburned.

That's the correlation.

Keith:
I know she's exhausted,

And I need to be supportive
for her.

But bitchy behavior
does get old.

Narrator:
in the past 10 days,

Keith and alana have consumed
mere hundreds of calories

When they need thousands daily.

The pain of malnutrition
forces them

Out into the searing heat of day
in search of food.

Alana: got to get a little more
protein into our diet.

Probably gonna focus on crab,

'Cause we've seen a lot of those
along the rocks,

To the point where I'm gonna
start throwing

Some of the methodology out the
window and just going for it.

If it see it, I'm gonna grab it.

Oh, hi.

Aah! *Bleep*

Keith, come here.
There's a crab.

Keith: coming.
Kind of like stone looking.

I'm probably gonna fling him
at you onto the beach.

Oh. Hey, buddy.
How's it going? Hi.

Oh, so unlucky.

Hey, alana, get out.
Get out.

Narrator: keith spots one of the
island's deadliest creatures.

*Bleep* a *bleep* big.

One bite from a banded sea krait
can cause paralysis

Within six hours
and is fatal if untreated.

If they bite you,
you're done.

Alana: I wouldn't mess
with the sea snake.

Really?

I think they're edible if you
cut below the poison packs.

I'm gonna go "rambo."

Alana:
of course you are.

Hey, buddy.

You digging -- are you digging
for something?

Oh, damn it.

Okay, now we got
pissed-off sea snake.

Where'd he go?
It's coming back around.

Okay, watch out.

It's right there.

Damn it. Whoa!

Oh, damn it.

Now we got
pissed-off sea snake.

Where'd he go?
Alana: it's coming back around.

Okay, watch out.

It's right there.

Damn it. Whoa!

I think he's fine.

Just injured him.

I'm okay with injuring
a sea snake.

If you're gonna injure it,

You should at least k*ll it
all the way.

Alana:
I mean, there's crabs there.

He doesn't need to mess
with a sea snake.

He's just trying to be macho,
show off, or whatever.

I honestly think
that whole thing unnecessary.

Didn't need to mess with it.

Stupid. Unnecessary risk.

I'm gonna leave this by you

So we can keep the flies
from getting in there and...

I have more flies attracted
to me than these guys.

But okay.

Fine, I'll --
just leave it over here.

I'll -- I'll do it
if it's too much trouble.

I'm kidding.
Can you try and relax today?

'Cause you're being
a major, major

Over-sensitive person
right now.

It's getting
very, very old.

Well, you're not
my favorite person today

After that little
"rambo" display,

Which was so awesome,
on the beach.

Oh, did that
hurt your feelings?

It was just stupid.

I actually don't need
your approval on that.

That really makes me question
our chances here --

Your doing crap
like that.

The thing is,
if you're mad at me today

'Cause of the snake thing,

You've been this way
for four days.

I've been --

This way for four days.

Attempting to k*ll things
and leave them there --

You've been a total
hyper-sensitive person

For four days.

I'm just tired
of hearing you complain

About every little thing.

That's what is making me
in a bad mood for the four days.

You b*tch more
than anyone I know.

No, I do not.
You are a prima donna.

Yes, you are.

Whatever,
mister "I need a pillow,"

"I need more padding,"
"my feet hurt."

You said the exact same things.

Maybe you can't hear yourself,

But you say
the exact same things.

You did.

I guess I can't, 'cause I don't
complain as much as you.

You're right.
You complain twice as much.

Whatever.

Like, I'm just --

I'm just trying to stay focused
on what we need.

We need water
and we need food.

Keith: my hope
after catching these crabs

Was that this meal
would be all fun.

Instead,
it was kind of a downer.

Alana: I'm here to survive and
get out of here in one piece.

So we got to tell it like it is
and be honest,

And if people's feelings get
hurt, so be it.

But we got to be
on the same page.

Keith: oh, my god.

I don't know if I can do this
for 10 more days.

Keith is not doing too great.

Just gonna turn it around
a little bit.

May have had a seizure.

The medic's on his way,
check him out.

Narrator: alana finds keith
barely conscious

After suffering
an apparent seizure

In the early morning hours
of day 11.

Crew medics quickly evac keith

And rush him to the nearest
hospital on the mainland.

Fearing head trauma,
local doctors

Immediately admit keith
and begin neurological testing.

Halfway through the challenge,

Keith has lost nearly 10%
of his body weight,

And he's displaying symptoms

Usually associated
with seizure and head trauma.

While keith's mri results
are inconclusive,

He's severely dehydrated

And exhibits signs
of acute fatigue.

Local medical staff recommend
that he remain hospitalized

For further testing, forcing
keith to tap out on day 11.

Alana: well, today --
so much going through my head.

Um, it's down to me, myself,
and i.

Just me and this big island
all to myself.

I'll give it my best shot.

I did not come here

For anything less
than the full stretch.

Was hoping to have a partner
for the duration of it --

At least more than halfway.

But it's just another challenge
that I'll need to overcome,

Just one more thing
for me to contend with.

I may be biting off more
than I can chew with this load.

No one's gonna be
watching my back.

It's all up to me --

Whether I eat, I sleep, I drink,
I'm warm at night.

It's all up to me.

Narrator: with her extraction
still seven days away

And her body
dramatically weakened,

Alana decides to brave
the dangerous shallow waters

In search of protein.

Alana: I get to the beach,

And I immediately see
these little black tips.

I see two right there.

Narrator: these young blacktip
sharks have come to feed,

Which is when they're
most aggressive,

And their serrated teeth

Could easily inflict
a deep and painful bite.

Alana: there's a lot of protein
in one shark.

I mean, that's probably
all the protein I'd need

For the next couple of days.

Ah, it's three of them now.

I hit him.

I just couldn't -- couldn't
penetrate that tough skin.

I'm so beat.

I'm really disappointed.

I don't have the fat reserves
to keep going,

So it's a little worrisome.

Whoa *bleep*

Okay, something just ran away.

Like, scuttled fast.

I still hear it.

I don't see anything.

Something's going on out here.

What the hell?

Oh, my gosh.
My heart is pounding.

Something is charging me.

Oh

Narrator:
two weeks into keith and alana's
21-day survival challenge,

Only alana remains.

Before they began,
they were both given

A primitive survival rating,
or "psr,"

And will be reevaluated
at the end of the challenge.

Since keith had to be removed
from the island,

His final psr
will be significantly reduced.

Alana's psr has remained steady,

But now, without a partner,
she faces the daunting reality

Of completing
the 21-day challenge alone...

Alana: I'm really nervous.

So much harder
doing this by myself.

Narrator: ...a feat
never before accomplished.

Alana: whoa *bleep*

Okay, something just ran away.

Something is charging me.

I'm hoping to find something
to explain that sound,

'Cause it was --
it was pretty intense.

It's like I was being charged
by animals.

Some loose rocks over here.

I might've been one of those.

But it sounded so much closer.

When you're alone in the dark
in the middle of the night

With no one around
and you hear these crazy sounds,

I mean, your imagination
just goes wild.

My brain is starting
to slack off on me a little bit.

I'm crashing.

All I've had today is bananas,
pretty much, to eat.

I need some protein.

Narrator:
with no energy left to hunt,

Alana resorts to scavenging
whatever resources she can find.

Alana: the wrong place
at the wrong time.

Much better cooked,

But it was too small
to bother trying to pick apart,

So I just ate the whole thing,
shell and all.

Narrator: starvation
tightens its grip on alana.

Her body is consuming itself
from within.

With each passing moment,

Completing the grueling
extraction journey on day 21

Seems less and less likely.

Now alana's greatest enemy
is time.

Alana:
I'm getting out of here.

But my energy level's so low,

I don't know
if I can't make it up there,

Which is gonna take every ounce
of energy that I have

And every muscle in my body.

Fat termites.

Just the protein boost I need.

Looks like I have quite a ways
to walk ahead of me.

Whatever it takes,
I got to get out of here.

Narrator:
in order to be rescued,

Alana will have to journey
around the island,

Wading through stingray
and sea snake territory,

Traverse a dense jungle,
and scale a sharp, rocky outcrop

To a high point
on the east side of the island.

There, she will wait
for a helicopter

To take her back
to civilization.

All right.

Let's do this.

The hike is tough.

Lots of rocks.

Then you got to watch out
for stingrays.

With all the sea snakes
we've spotted around here,

I have to watch for that.

It is very hot and very sunny.

The heat is just oppressive.

That must be it --
the top of that big hill.

That's my ticket out of here.

Just get
to the top of that rock.

I'm a little concerned
about my energy levels.

I'm already tired.

Ow. *Bleep*

Razor-blade grass.

Really thick over here,

So I'm taking my steps
very carefully.

I don't want to bleed to death.

Oh, my god.

So, this is it.

I am so ready
to get out of here.

I have to admit, when I realized
that keith wasn't coming back,

There was a split second
where I thought

That I would go ahead
and tap out, too.

I hear my ride coming.

I can't wait. It's gonna feel
so good to get in there.

I have learned
how I deal with solitude,

Not knowing where my next meal's
gonna come from.

And I've learned a lot
about what's important to me

When everything's stripped away.

I definitely hear
some propellers.

And it sounds
so beautiful right now.

There it is! There it is!

Whoo!

I feel changed.

The hardest thing I've ever done
in my life.

Knowing that I came out of it --

That's just gonna be a source
of strength and inspiration

To me, probably for
the rest of my life.

Whoo!

Yes!

Narrator:
over the course of the 21 days,

Alana and keith went through
massive transformations.

Even though he abandoned
the challenge on day 11,

Keith lost 18 pounds.

Alana lost a total of 17.

Upon completing blood work
and other medical assessments,

Keith was discharged
from the hospital

With a clean bill of health.

Alana showed tremendous mental
fortitude after keith left.

She is the first person
to ever reach the end

Of the 21-day challenge
without a partner.

This brings her survival rating
up from 6.1. To 7.0,

While keith's rating falls
to a 4.5,

Proving that it takes
more than meets the eye

To survive naked and afraid.

The girl that works
at the fancy store in the mall

And does makeup -- I did it.
