06x04 - The Great Outdoors

Post by bunniefuu »

[hawk cries]

-all right, jay, ready?
-Yep.

[kelly]
three, two, one.

[engine revs]

[items clatter]

oh, he gonna have
a hell of a mess

in the back of that car.

What I lose in cupcake points
I'll make up for in speed.

[kelly]
did he know
that we said safely?

[items thudding]

[rock music]

-let's get it on!
-Leno gonna pull out

just nasty like that.

[engine revs]

[jay]
tonight on jay leno's garage:

I'm like a nascar mom
right now.

[jay]
I get lost
in the great outdoors.

I came out here years ago
and there was nothing here.

-And now?
-But it won't be a walk

-in the park.
-Get movin'.

[jay shouting]

[iliza]
I like goin' through
that mud.

[jay]
we'll fly through fields.

[offset]
woo, sir!

[jay]
encounter ferocious beasts.

[iliza]
this is the biggest vehicle

I've ever been allowed
to drive.

[jay]
wrangle wild minivans.

Pick up the pace
a little bit.

[kelly]
I'm pickin' up the pace.
Watch this.

[jay]
and defend ourselves
against danger.

[scott]
you're lucky you're dealing
with a professional here.

Yeah, yeah, I was just
thinking that myself.

Or maybe we'll even go
for a hike.

-Hey, kev.
-You like doing things

sitting down,
don't you?

[jay]
ah, not gonna happen.

I would have given up
the hike

if it was raining this hard.

[jay]
keep your hands inside
the vehicle at all times.

[offset whoops]

do not feed the animals.

[iliza]
is it weird to give a bear
a tropical fruit?

[jay]
and remember,
just try to have a little fun.

Fun loving, that's the idea.

[iliza]
I feel like an american
in this car.

[jay]
it's fantastic.

[offset exclaims excitedly]

[theme music]

[intense music]

[jay]
personally,
I can't think of a better way

to celebrate
the great outdoors

than with these
two giant sliding doors

found on either side
of this family-friendly

chrysler minivan.

And today this american icon
will meet an american idol.

Of course,
I'm talking about

none other
than grammy-winning singer

and talk show host
extraordinaire,

and my buddy,
kelly clarkson.

Last season,
we road-tripped around

in her fully loaded
ford bronco,

but today we're gonna see
how well she handles

the ultimate family truckster.

Here with my good friend,
kelly clarkson.

Now, kelly,
I think it's fair to say

you're a pretty competitive
person, right?

I think that's
a fair assessment.

[jay]
yeah, we're both competitive.

She won american idol,
you know,

and I was doing
the tonight show,

and those are
competitive industries.

And we've always talked
about doing a race.

And you thought
it was unfair.

I think it's a little unfair.

I mean, you have a leg up on me.

You're like a car guy
and you race and stuff.

[jay]
but you're a mom with kids.

-Yes.
-Now as a mom,

you have to race around
with kids

and get them there safely.

See, I don't have to,
I don't have any kids,

so I can just race around.

So I thought a race
that would be fair, okay?

My handicap would be
I would have birthday cakes

and kids and stuff,
the same as you.

-Okay.
-And we can see who can do it

the quickest and the safest.

-Oh.
-Now, see, I've got a couple

of pacifica minivans,
these are brand new,

these are 2021s.

This is like
the top-of-the-line minivan

-that you can get.
-All right.

[jay]
this ain't
your mother's minivan.

Or your father's either.

But it's definitely
family-friendly

because
the 2021 chrysler pacifica

has state-of-the-art
safety features

like auto braking,
collision warning,

and lane keep assistance.

All the things
kelly will need

if she wants
to beat me today.

Like that'll happen.

We've loaded 'em
with birthday supplies,

cupcakes, soda,
everything you need.

And since we don't want
to use real kids,

we got some dummies
in there, okay?

And for every cupcake
you drop or falls over,

you lose a point.

But do you get to eat it?

[jay]
yes, you get to--yes.

[kelly]
if it's damaged,
do you get to eat it?

[jay]
yeah, damage goes to the winner.

-Yeah.
-Yeah, yeah.

And to make it
even more challenging,

we have kind of
an off-road course.

But anyway, I thought
this would be even.

This way, it's not
all about high speed,

'cause I know you don't like
to go really fast.

-Yeah.
-It's about safety, right?

-Ready to give it a shot?
-I'ma slow and chill,

but I'm gonna maybe put
a little bit on the gas.

[jay]
okay. I tell you what,
why don't you go first.

-All right.
-And we're gonna time each one

-and see how you do, okay?
-Okay.

[jay]
all right.
What kelly doesn't know

is this isn't
my first minivan rodeo.

-Here we go.
-A few seasons ago,

I went up against
my good pal, wanda sykes.

-Come on, pick up the pace.
-Nice and slow.

[jay]
and let's just say...

[engine revs]

-what is he doin'?
-Well, not everybody made it.

[wanda]
jay, you k*lled the kids.

This is not supposed to happen.

-Are you ready for this?
-Yeah, yeah.

-All right.
-She's gonna lose.

To be continued...

[majestic music]

ah, yes, the great outdoors,

full of fresh air,
rolling hills,

and old white guys
standing alone in a field.

And while it also has
its fair share of off-roading,

it has just the right amount
of offset.

What up?

[jay]
we may be off
the beaten path today,

but grammy-nominated rapper,
songwriter, and actor offset

definitely
has his career on track.

When he's not singing solo

or rapping alongside
his crew in migos,

he can be seen
sharing the stage

with the likes of drake,
macklemore,

or his better half,
the one and only cardi b.

-Everything cool?
-Yeah, everything good, man.

-How you doin'?
-I'm surprised

that you would drive--
drive this up these dirt ro--

well, you have history
with challengers, don't you?

[offset]
yeah, this is--this is
really my first car

that I ever bought,
purchased on my own,

it was a hellcat 2015.

This is a monster car,
muscle car, real muscle.

[jay]
well, you know, I have one
of the original ones from 1970,

and that's got the motor,

but it doesn't really stop
or go around corners.

You know, when you bought
those back in the day,

it came with a 90-day warranty.

If they thought you were
burnin' rubber with it,

they'd cancel that.

Yeah, so, now you can--

you can do burnouts
all day long in this thing.

But you've been a car guy
since way back, right?

[offset]
since way back.
My grandfather still, uh,

he has an el camino
from like '68.

[jay]
and how old's your grandfather?

My grandfather's
probably like 72.

Oh, okay, so he's--
he's two years older than I am.

That makes me laugh,
that's funny.

See, I should be
hanging' out with him.

He's got the cars I like.

-That's--that's our era.
-He got some pieces, man.

So, now, for people
who might not know,

tell the history now.

You guys,
you're in a group, migos,

with your two cousins, right?

[offset]
yeah, my two cousins,
quavo and takeoff.

-Right, right.
-We came from gwinnett county,

so it's like 30 minutes away
from the city of atlanta,

so a lot of people when
we started doing the music,

it was like,
"y'all ain't gonna make it.

Y'all, we've--nobody makes it
from here."

yeah, yeah.
No, but I think it's great.

I mean, I think your success,
it's easy to understand

'cause I didn't know you,
obviously,

till I met you,
you guys came to my garage

and you guys knew
what you were talking about,

you guys were smart.

I mean, it was really fun.

I really had a great time.

-I mean, you jay leno.
-Well, yeah, that's it--

-yeah, that's what it is.
-Yeah, you jay leno.

[jay]
no, I'm the guy
that's the same age

as your grandfather, okay?

[offset]
yeah, who don't know
jay though?

[jay]
yeah, that's right,
that's right.

Who don't know jay?

[jay]
well, we got something
that I think'll surprise ya.

See, this,
although you did take this

up a dirt road for,
like, 30 miles,

-it's not an off-road car.
-It's not?

No, I'd say
let's take this engine

and put it in something
really off-road.

Then you got--
come on, I'll show you

-what I'm talking about.
-Okay, cool, let's go.

-The "t-rex."
-yeah, now, yeah.

You take the engine
out of your hellcat.

-Right.
-And you put it in this.

Well, they may have done
a little more than that.

The ram trx boasts massive

all-wheel-drive,
top-of-the-line suspension,

and enough juice in its over

to tow over 8,000 pounds
of cargo in its sleep.

[offset]
wait, hold on,
so this a pickup,

-this a hellcat pickup?
-Yeah, yeah, basically.

I've never off-roaded
either, so--

-you've never off-roaded?
-No.

[voice]
off-road virgin.

[jay]
the key's in it, hop it.

-Come on, we'll do it.
-All right, let's do it.

[jay]
it's always a big deal
to be somebody's first,

but I have a feeling
he's gonna do just fine.

Of course,
if he can keep up.

[intense music]

[offset]
okay, leno gonna pull out
just nasty like that.

Just...

[purrs like an engine]

okay then.

Okay.

all right, jay,
I'm likin' the speed.

[jay]
I don't know,
I think he might like it.

And there's an awful lot
to love about this truck.

[lively music]

you know,
most sort of vehicles like this

don't have this kind of power,

so you go down a hill

and you're just
downshifting all the time

or it just doesn't
have the power

to get you up and over.

But this with 700 horsepower.

So it's not a t-rex,
it's a trx.

-I wanna make sure--
-it's a trx.

In the street, it's a t-rex,
in real life it's a trx.

[t-rex roars]

you know, a fun thing
about this truck is,

in la, off-road is the same
as the roads

'cause they're so bad
in los angeles.

[offset laughs]

[offset]
I always thought off-roading
would be, like,

bumpy, bumpy,
boom, boom, boom.

This right here is cool, smooth.

We're goin' up any angles.

[engine revving]

this is fire, bro.

I would love to take my sons
on some [bleep] like this.

[jay]
[unintelligible].

You know,
even at 20 miles an hour

it'd be exciting to a kid,
you know?

Make me feel like a kid
while I'm in this thing.

[jay]
yeah.

[rock music]

[engine revving]

[offset]
oh, yessir, jay,
I like that.

[jay]
here you go,
a little tail out.

[offset]
rooster!

[jay]
first rooster tail,
congratulations.

Jay, man, I gotta--
I gotta ask you, man.

The--I gotta be the first one
with one of these, man.

I'll give the cashier's check
right now.

-I need to buy it now.
-Okay.

I know a guy who knows a guy
who'll take care of ya.

[offset]
okay, I need that guy asap.

We cannot forget about this.

Well, I think it's important
we do another test ride.

Let's get it on.

Let's go.

[jay howls]

[offset howls]

[lively rock music]

[jay]
I got a feeling we're gonna
be here quite a while.

[offset chuckles]

comin' up:

Kevin nealon tells us
all to take a hike.

-It's kinda like hiking.
-Well, the only nice thing

I like about it is,
I'll get home quicker

and then I'll have time
to go back out and hike again.

[jay]
stay tuned.

[expl*si*n]

hummers
have long been considered

the mega-macho,
air-polluting, gas-guzzling,

rolling-coal kind of goliaths
of the great outdoors.

And yet,
they still had their fans.

[male voice]
yo.

[jay]
I don't think so.

But now,
we can all get on board

because the all-new
electric hummer ev

is not only eco-friendly,

it's also jampacked
with power and technology.

[thunder crashes]

[energetic music]

this ev is truly
a technological marvel.

Its powerful 1,000 horsepower,
zero-emission engine

boasts a remarkable

on a single charge,

thanks to gmc's
amazing new ultium batteries.

And don't worry,
its future-forward interior

is definitely dressed
to impress.

Gm designer al oppenheiser
swung by today

with two pre-production
prototypes,

and I gotta say...

Well, I'm pretty impressed.

You know, one of my
favorite sayings is,

"engineers will change
the world."

and you're one of the guys
that's doing it.

I mean, you take
something like a hummer,

which, when it first came out,
people went crazy.

And then the environmentalists
went nuts.

So you found out the problem
with the car.

It was polluting.

You got rid of the pollution.

And now you have something
that is eco-friendly,

as silly as that sounds.

Just exactly like you said.

Everybody remembers hummer,
good or bad.

-Right.
-But if you make it, um,

an off-road beast,

then the people that loved it
will really love it.

And if you make it
zero emissions,

the people that hated it
have no excuse not to love it.

[jay]
right, right.

It's actually faster,
it has more power.

It's quieter.

There's no place where
the gas vehicle beats it.

This wins on all--
on all points,

which is what
I find fascinating.

And, of course, if you want
to take in a little nature,

the infinity roof system
lets you see it all.

The 18 onboard cameras
allow you to see

every single angle
of the undercarriage

to make sure you can
navigate safely

over rough terrain.

But enough talk.

Time to test it out.

[al]
so we're gonna go down here.

And you'll see
these tight turns

we're gonna go on
with this rear steer

that you wouldn't think
is possible

with a big truck like this.

[jay]
I know. It's amazing
how effortless it feels.

It just makes me laugh.

Are we allowed to do anything?

You know,
I can hop in the back

and have a sandwich
while this thing is...

Yeah, this is pretty amazing.

-Look at this.
-One of the things

that we're really stressing
with an electric vehicle

that's an off-road vehicle
is how quiet it is.

Yeah, I mean,
that's the amazing part.

And plus, it just makes
some big old diesel thing

just seem so obsolete.

You know, the torque of this
is what really makes me smile.

It's just
so incredibly powerful.

[al]
we can apply it
with torque vectoring

at any particular wheel
we need it,

which is great
for off-roading.

Of course,
the fun part on-road

is we can use it
to get in the zero-to-60s

of this big thing
in three seconds.

[jay]
this ev simply has it all,

but the coolest feature?

Gotta be the crabwalk.

[al]
from an off-roader's
perspective,

crabwalk will allow you
to get around

rock obstacles
or tree obstacles.

[jay]
very cool,
but how does it all work?

Well, if the hummer encounters
an impassable object like, say,

a boulder, crabwalk
can engage all four wheels

to turn in the same direction
up to 10 degrees

while the vehicle's body
stays straight.

This allows the entire vehicle
to easily maneuver around it

and keep on goin'.

[mellow music]

and that's still proprietary.

You guys are the only ones
that have this feature,

-isn't that correct?
-Yes.

To our knowledge, nobody else
has this in production.

[jay]
it's fascinating.

It's really amazing.

It really
is the next generation.

Of course, I think
I speak for everyone

when I say:

If this was my vehicle,
I would never attempt this.

[chuckles]

but since it's yours,
I'm gonna give it a shot.

[mellow music]

yes!

Let's just hope
it comes in denim blue.

you know, I'm really
trying to appreciate

the great outdoors today,

but I think I might need a true
nature guru to show me the way,

and who better
than my old buddy,

hiking enthusiast
and comedian kevin nealon.

[kevin]
so you don't use your legs much
for anything, do you?

[lively music]

[jay]
now you probably know him best

from his many years
on Saturday night live,

weeds,
and man with a plan,

but these days,
when he's not performing standup

all across the country,

he's hiking
all around hollywood

with these celebrity buddies
in his hit youtube talk show,

hiking with kevin.

Tell me your whole, I guess,
philosophy of hiking.

What's behind it?

[kevin]
well, I like to get out.

I like to be out
in the fresh air.

I like to get
the endorphins goin'.

And I like hiking
because, for me, you know,

it's meditative.

And I get a lot of writing,

a lot of thinking done
when I'm out here,

aside from the exercise.

I mean, it's just...

I mean, there's so many great
things about it, you know?

And I like to hike
in the mornings

because that's when I feel like
everything is just, you know,

clean, the air is clean,
and, you know,

birds that are out in...

Hi, kev.

-What happened?
-Oh, nothin', nothin'.

I just--this seemed
a more efficient way to hike.

I think we could get there
a little quicker.

[kevin]
wow, you like doing things
sitting down, don't you?

Well, I mean, this--
my feet are moving,

I'm pressing the brake
and the gas,

-so it's kind of like walking.
-When you pee,

do you sit down
on the toilet?

[jay]
well, I think that's
a very personal question

just between me
and my urologist.

[kevin]
is this your hiking car?

Yeah, that's what this is.

This is the aston martin dbx.

This is what you take
to go hiking.

Okay, well,
maybe not hiking,

but aston martin's
first foray into suvs

has enough muscle
to climb mount everest.

With the dbx's 542-horsepower,
twin-turbo, 4-liter v8 engine,

you can definitely use it
to haul some serious, well,

you-know-what.

[mellow music]

whenever I go hiking,
I like to leave aston martins

out on the trail
along the way.

Ah, in fact, oh,
here's one right up here.

Okay, why don't you
hop in that one.

-So you left that there.
-I left that there for you.

[kevin]
instead of breadcrumbs,
you leave aston martins.

[jay]
exactly, yeah.

I'm glad kevin decided
to see things my way.

I mean, if you're
gonna go outdoors,

you really wanna have
the right gear.

Now, kev, see, isn't this
so much easier than hiking?

It's kind of like hiking.

[kevin]
well, the only nice thing
I like about it is,

I'll get home quicker
and then I'll have, uh,

time to go back out
and hike again.

Right, right.
Well, whatever the reason.

But, you see,
this would be hours walking.

And we're protected
from the elements.

It's fabulous.

I don't think there's any
vehicle you haven't driven.

When I was starting out
in standup,

you used to come down
to the improv on melrose

and you would--I would
actually see you sometimes

drive your motorcycle through
the front door into the bar.

[jay]
oh, that's right, yeah,
I used to do that all the time.

I loved those early days
when we were all startin' out

and workin' together
and nobody had any money.

And everybody
was very supportive.

Everybody went to everybody
else's tonight show

and just all that kind of stuff.

Well, I remember
doing the tonight show

for the first time.

Everybody would always
stand in the bar at the improv

and watch the tv,
and you could hear a pin drop.

[jay]
actually,
that's when you were on.

When I was on, there would be
a lot of laughter.

I remember
you were on one time

and somebody dropped a pin

to see if you could
actually hear it,

-and we did hear it.
-You know,

I could not have thrown you
more of a lob than that.

-I know, I know.
-When I said that,

-I knew you would jump on it.
-Yeah, and I didn't mean to go--

but, you know,
this is like a knife fight.

Sometimes you just have to--
you have to do the cut

and then apologize afterwards.

[energetic music]

let me ask you,
what was your first car?

The first car I ever owned
that I bought

was a 1965 chevelle malibu,
three on the column.

[jay]
oh, that's a very nice--
and it's six-cylinder?

[kevin]
yeah, six-cylinder,

but many times it would get
stuck in third gear.

-Right.
-So I would have to--

sometimes I'd drive
from vermont to connecticut

without slowing down because
it was stuck in third gear.

I couldn't stop
at any stop signs

and I just had
to time everything.

I feel like we're, um,
we're sh**ting the rapids,

going down a river
right now.

I would have
given up the hike

-if it was raining this hard.
-Well, see,

that's the beauty
about the automobile.

You don't have to give up
the hike.

You're hiking in the car
right now.

Does the car count steps?

In a manner of speaking.

[chuckles]

[lively music]

but, you know, I've always
been a big fan of your comedy

'cause you always look at things
just slightly different.

That's why I smiled
when I heard about your show,

hiking with kevin,
on youtube.

Where did the idea
for this come from?

What was the idea behind it?

[kevin]
well, I live in los angeles

and there's a lot
of canyons and trails.

And then one day I was hiking
with matthew modine,

he's a friend of mine.

We were hiking
this challenging loop

in one of the canyons,
and we're both out of breath.

I thought,
"this would be really funny

if I was interviewing you
and we couldn't--

nobody could understand
what we were saying

'cause we're so out of breath,"
you know.

Like, who did, um,
what movie, you know.

But I posted it
on twitter back then and, uh,

people liked it
and then I thought,

"I should do this
every week,"

'cause I, you know,
I got some celebrity friends

-I could call and--
-so after the second week

when you ran out
of friends, uh...

[chuckles]

that is such
your style of comedy.

-Well, no, no, no--
-it's very kind of, you know,

like, it's kind of backhanded
but fun-loving.

Fun--yes, fun-loving,
that's the idea.

Now, are you at the point

where people
get suggested to you

and you go,
"no, I don't wanna--

-I don't wanna--"
-yeah, your people came to me

-many times.
-Right, really.

[kevin]
and I said, "I don't think so."

see, there's a softball.

I lobbed that to ya.

You owe me.
You owe me a lot of softballs.

[jay]
I mean, I caught that one.

Just, "oh, I couldn't
pull it back in time."

[laughs]

hey, listen, I want to thank you
for coming out.

I really appreciate it.

And congratulations
on your new show.

-We'll check it out.
-Thanks, man.

This was not inconvenient
at all for me.

It was for me, so,
I appreciate you being here.

-Thanks a lot.
-What, you going home now?

Yeah, I got a car.

Think it's a bad time
to tell kevin

he might have to just
hike back home?

comin' up:

How many cupcakes
can kelly clarkson

keep out of harm's way?

She's taking it slow
around the curves.

[kelly]
you don't understand my method.

[jay]
and later:

Comedian iliza shlesinger
and I

attempt to soothe
some savage beasts.

[iliza]
oh, it was a banana

-in your pocket.
-Oh yeah.

To a race to see who could carry
some very precious cargo

around an off-road course
fastest and safest.

-Kelly, ready to go?
-Wait. Wait, wait, wait.

I gotta do one more thing,
I gotta do one more thing.

-Hold on, hold on.
-If she doesn't keep stallin'.

[kelly]
you're not buckled in, buddy.

-Ugh.
-Not buckled in.

[jay]
classic way to get in
the competition's head.

Nice try, kelly.

Nice try.

Uh, it's a race.

[kelly]
they're children, jay.

Just can't tell 'em
to hold on.

[jay]
tell 'em to tough it out.

Now to recap the rules.

Whoever can make it
around the course

with the most
undamaged cupcakes

will get to have their cupcake
and eat the loser's too.

Now let me just tell ya...

-I am ready.
-...I love cupcakes.

Three, two, one, go.

[kelly]
okay.

[mellow music]

yeah!

[jay]
I'm gonna win this so easy.

now, she certainly puts
the world idle in american idol.

she's taking it slow
around the curves.

[kelly]
no, jay, you don't understand
my method.

You said safely.

Oh yeah, you gotta slow down
on the curves, jay.

Bet you didn't know that.

Bet you didn't know that.

Then you speed up.

I'm like a nascar mom right now.

all right, all right.
Did you see that?

That was a winner
that just passed you.

[jay]
kelly has proved herself to be

one tough mother
of an opponent,

and I'm pretty sure
not a single cupcake

survived the drive.

[hatch softly hums]

-okay, not good.
-But here's the thought.

See, I really did win,

'cause you said
what was damaged,

I could eat.

So this was my plan.

[laughing]

[jay]
well, now it's my turn.

You're gonna lose
a point for that.

[resplendent music]

buckle up, folks,
it's time to assess & caress

with donald osborne.

[chiming twinkle]

well, today we have
three cars that represent

the various stages
of the great outdoors.

We're joined
by our appraiser extraordinaire,

donald osborne,

and all three cars come from
the audrain automobile museum

in newport, rhode island,
correct?

Yes they do, jay,
and they represent

all sorts of expressions
of the great outdoors.

-Exactly.
-From our 1928

morris oxford
parkes utility,

this 1968 volkswagen
sand buggy,

and the 1970 land rover
series iia.

Why don't we start
with the morris?

This car was built
for lady mildmay-white of kent,

and it's very interesting,

because the morris mark
was sort of like

an english buick.

This car has never
been restored.

-Wow.
-It has had some paint work

over the years,

but the interior
is original,

the wood trim
is completely original,

[jay]
and how many horsepower
is this, about 18?

-This is a 14 horsepower.
-Fourteen, okay.

[donald]
it's got enough power
to get you where you want to go,

but these narrow tires
and the a*tillery wheels

are also very useful
when you have to go

on varying road conditions
as well in the country.

[jay]
well, what's our second car,
the land rover?

[donald]
let's take a look
at the land rover.

Now of course,
everyone's familiar

with the land rover,

the british version
of our jeep.

[jay]
they do have
a tremendous cult status.

[donald]
and especially the series iia

are the ones that really
stick in people's minds,

and this is one of the last
of the series iia cars

where they've actually
moved the headlights

to the fenders,

because they were, of course,
in the grille in the early cars.

And it's funny,
when I see these fully restored,

they don't go for as much
as the nice patinaed cars.

You see them now
incredibly tarted up

with metallic paint jobs
and chrome wheels and all that,

and somehow, it's slightly
embarrassing for me.

It's like,
"don't look at me,

because I'm not supposed to be
dressed like this!"

right, yes, exactly.

Our last vehicle here
is wearing no clothes at all.

This is a frame that was
actually built by a company

here in california
that built cars basically

for baja racing
and things like that.

It's got a standard
'68 volkswagen

although it does have
that very neat shifter,

which is, I think,
slight overkill

for the power available
in the vehicle,

but it's a great look.

It's a very, very
well-built frame.

It's great that it's got
this great big windshield,

of course, which probably
most of them did not have.

You just wore
your helmet and goggles

and went at it.

But which one of these
has gone up the most in value...

-In the last five years.
-Oh, in the last five years.

The last five years.

Much like my favorite
is donald,

-it is also the oxford.
-Okay, so you're going with

the choice of
lady mildmay-white.

Yes, yes, lady mildmay-white,
yes, I will go with her.

Coming up,

donald will divulge
the dollar amounts, and then,

scott eastwood shows me
that sometimes,

it's good to get lost.

You're lucky you're dealing
with a professional here.

Yeah, I was just
thinkin' that myself.

And we're back
with donald osborne.]

[donald]
so of our three vehicles here,

about five years ago,

this volkswagen sand buggy

might have cost you
about $2,850.

And today, you'd probably have
to pay about $3,500 for it.

The 1928 morris oxford
five years ago

would have been about $55,000,

and today, it's about $65,000.

The land rover, series iia.

Five years ago, one would have
cost you about $47,500,

and today, it would cost you
about $66,000.

So the winner of
the appreciation sweepstakes

is the land rover.

[jay]
yeah, maybe.

Well, there's that whole
silicon valley yuppie factor.

Exactly, you can't
discount fashion.

[jay]
but I'm sticking
with my little oxford.

[donald]
and I agree, because
that's why I dressed for it.

[rousing music]

[jay]
so far on the show,

we've seen a few wild rides,

but we've yet to see
any wild animals

or catch a glimpse of a guest
in their natural habitat.

I think I found
just the right vehicle for it.

Join me, now, won't you,
as we venture further

into the great outdoors
on jay leno's carfari.

[engines growl]

[tense music]

now, be very quiet,
we don't want to scare him.

But if you look there
just through the brush,

you'll see a prime example
of the striking

scottus eastwoodius.

[bow snaps]

[arrow lands with soft thwack]

'course, you may know him
more commonly

as actor, model, and hunter
scott eastwood.

-Scott!
-Jay leno?

[jay]
perhaps you've noticed
his striking resemblance

to his famous father, clint.

But scott has worked
extremely hard

to forge his own path
en route to hollywood stardom.

You may recognize him
from his recent roles

in the hit films
fate of the furious,

pacific rim: Uprising,

and dc's suicide squad.

[soft pneumatic humming]

you're like a bond villain.

Yeah, it's like--
yes, I am.

I just happened to be out here
and I ran into you.

But I know
you're a bow hunter,

and that's what
this is built for.

Plus, no animal's gonna
attack you in this thing.

Seems a little
like cheating, but...

It is like cheating.

-But welcome to my world.
-[laughs]

[jay]
see, that's what I like
about bow hunting,

it's not cheating.

You have an arrow,
you got one shot...

-Yeah.
-...And you take it, you know?

I think that's kinda cool.
How long you been doing this?

-Five or six years.
-Now, tell me about this.

[scott]
well, this is a--

-your standard compound bow.
-So it's like a transmission.

-It multiplies the power.
-Yeah, yeah.

[jay]
and how far can you sh**t
accurately with that?

-Not that far.
-Is that just you, or...

I mean, a real marksman, yeah,
but yourself.

Like me, an actor? No.

Let's see. Take a shot,
lemme see how you do it.

Now you got me, uh...
You got all this pressure on me.

Got these cameras here.

You travel with cameras?

[jay]
legally, I have to travel
with cameras or I get sued.

My life has to be photographed

-so I apologize for that.
-It's okay.

It's a little unnerving, but...

[suspenseful music]

[resounding thwack]

-very good!
-Eh, it's okay.

[jay]
but I thought this thing
would be kinda cool,

because this is ultimately
a car show...

-Yep.
-...And we try to find

all kinds of vehicles.

It's a pretty sophisticated--

it just looks like
four wheels and a box,

but there's a lot more
engineering.

And then some.

Dubbed the cabra,

it could easily be
the world's most ultimate

stealth-hunting vehicle.

Whether it's the silent

or cool articulating cab
that can be quietly

raised or lowered,

both photographers
and hunters alike

can get in close
for that perfect shot.

You know, if you're
into that kind of thing.

The real trick
is convincing the wife

why you have to have it,
that's the...

"honey, we need this
because x."

you know, "the price
of elk in the store

has gone through the roof.

If we go out
and we get our own elk--

oh sure, we make
an initial investment

of $140,000, 150 grand,
but what we save in elk,

I think it would
pay for itself."

I think you're right,

I think we should
have a talk with her.

[jay]
but it's pretty cool.

And you can sit up here as well.

-This is for the wife.
-It's a really clever,

clever idea.

-Should we give it a drive?
-You wanna drive it?

Well, I mean, yeah,
I wanna drive it.

[jay]
hop in!

Scott eastwood seems
immediately at ease

behind the wheel of a cabra,

but I need to remember
to keep my guard up

around this wild beast.

You know, I feel like
I'm in the back

of one of those railroad cars,
running for president.

Thank you!

Vote for me!
Thank you, thank you.

I believe I may have
already earned his trust,

but only after
some well-timed questions

could I be sure.

So, scott, any initial
driving impressions?

It's pretty quiet.

Feel like I could
just go anywhere,

just about anywhere with it.

So what was your first car?

First car was
a '91 ford crown vic.

It was an old stunt car,
so it was gutted.

I was 17, and my dad--

I asked him, actually,
for a loan

to buy an old pickup truck
and he said,

"nah, I got a car for ya."

the trunk didn't close,

so we had to use a bungee cord
to keep the trunk closed.

[jay]
that's funny, yeah.

Any old cars you like,

or you just mostly
into the modern stuff?

No, no, love old cars.

I have a 1972 chevy cheyenne.

-Oh, the pickup, yeah.
-The pickup, two-tone,

blue and white.

That was even a cool car
back in the day when it was new.

Yeah, you know,
what's cool about it is,

it's got power steering,
disc brakes, and ac.

[jay]
which was really unusual,

because back then,
trucks were trucks.

Now you have luxury trucks,

which almost sounds
like a misnomer.

You know, leather interior
and all that kinda stuff,

but back in the day,

that was not
the way it was done.

This would actually
be a good vehicle

for you to go bow hunting,
don't you think?

I think it would be.

[jay]
of course, you could
load this thing up with elk

-and you'd be fine.
-That's right.

We got plenty of room.

So do you dress the elk
and do the whole deal?

Yeah, that's part of it,
you know.

If you're gonna take
an animal's life,

you do all the right things
to preserve that meat, and..

[jay]
yeah, 'cause, you know,

the elk's family is going,

"we were mad at first,
but since he ate 'im,

I guess that makes it okay."

yeah.

And you know,
more than anything,

sometimes you're out there
and it's not always about

just getting an animal,

it's about being in nature
and sort of being

in the unspoiled part of nature.

Which is pretty amazing.

You're out there
before the animals wake up,

sort of just
getting back to your roots.

You know, I have to say,

I wouldn't just let
any normal actor

drive you up with this thing.

I mean, you're lucky
you're dealing with

a professional here.

Yeah, I was just
thinking that myself.

I was also thinking it was
a little isolated out here.

Maybe a little too isolated.

This thing makes huntin' fun.

Yeah. Not as fun
as huntin' humans, though.

-You're kidding, right?
-Get movin'.

[jay]
well, it appears
as though the hunter

has become the hunted.

[ironic laughter]

[jay]
boy, did I pick the wrong day
to forget my running shoes.

Yeah, like I have running shoes.

Now it's time
for another edition of...

[energetic rock music]

now, there's the great outdoors,

and then there's those
absolutely insane people

who help make
the outdoors great.

I almost thought I was dead!

[motor revs]

[jay]
canada's own
larry the enticer

is definitely
one of those people...

[motor roars]

...As well as being our
sister nation's poster child

for both denim
and "don't try this at home."

well, that hurt,
but the et still runs,

so round two!

[jay]
by some mystical force,

larry has somehow
managed to immortalize

a simple four-word phrase

by riding on the back of
a beat-up old snowmobile.

Just gonna send it!

Gonna send it.

Just gonna send it!

[jay]
larry is definitely
a professional...Something.

[whoosh, thump]

and, honestly,
we're just glad

he's still alive
to celebrate.

I'm still gonna send it.

[jay]
oh--did I mention...

Don't try this at home!

[crowd cheers]

coming up,
we'll finally find out

who takes the cake

in kelly clarkson's
kid party grand prix.

You k*lled your children, jay.

Earlier in the show,

I challenged kelly clarkson
to a very family-friendly

minivan race.

-Yeah!
-And, as expected,

she really made
a mess of things.

Well, now it's my turn
to put the icing

on the cupcakes.

That's what we pros say.

All right, jay. Ready?

Yeah.

[kelly]
three, two...One!

oh, he gonna have
a hell of a mess

in the back of that car.

Yep.

[jay]
all right, I got it.

What I lose in cupcakes points,

I'll make up for in speed.

[engine revs]

does he know
that we said "safely"?

You k*lled your children, jay.

[jay]
that just means
more cupcakes for me.

[laughs crazily]

now for the moment of truth.

-[bell dings]
-yes!

All right.

Thank you.

[kelly]
the children are dead.

Do you remember "safely"?

[jay]
lemme see if anything fell over.

[kelly]
oh yeah, let's see.

Dude, I totally won.

Look at your car!

Look at the top!

[jay]
let's see how many cupcakes...

[kelly]
yeah. Have a...Yeah.

[playful music]

[jay]
where'd all the cupcakes...

[kelly]
what?

[jay]
well. Kelly figured out

the classic
cupcake race cover-up:

You can't count cupcakes
if they've already been eaten.

You win this round, kelly,
but I'll get my revenge.

[kelly]
exactly.

Walkin' away from a winner!

[jay]
comin' up,

comedian iliza shlesinger
tells us

how the lone star state
really goes big.

My prom date had, like,
a lift kit,

and it was very cool,
sort of.

[jay]
somewhere here in california.Nt

I don't know exactly where,

because I've been on
this dirt road for a while,

if you can even
call it a road,

and I'm driving a rezvani.

This is a heavily modified
jeep gladiator.

Everything has been changed,

every panel,
every detail, the works.

And if its 6-wheel,

super-reinforced chassis
isn't enough,

perhaps the rugged capability of
a 1300 horsepower engine option

is more your speed.

That'll definitely
keep the beasts at bay.

[engine revs]

you know, boutique manufacturing
has become the thing now.

You take a specialty vehicle
like a jeep

and then you modify it
the way you want.

Some people
strip off everything,

and other people want
something like this,

all custom panels,
lot of carbon fiber.

Some people want 'em
bulletproof.

[mock g*nf*re reverberates]

like my good buddy jamie foxx,
for example,

who swung by the show
a few seasons ago

with his very economical
rezvani tank.

[jamie]
when you're in the mean streets
of pacific palisades,

you know,
it's going down.

[jay]
see, that's when
you know you're popular,

when you're driving a vehicle

and you know people are
gonna be shootin' at you.

You might wanna change
your film choices.

There's nothing you can't do
to this vehicle

to make it
exactly what you want.

You don't even need a road
to drive this thing,

'cause with six-wheel drive,
you can go anywhere

and do just about anything.

[engine revs, mud scatters]

I'm on my way now to meet
a very funny comedian,

iliza shlesinger.

As the only female winner
of last comic standing ever,

iliza definitely has
the comedy chops.

Every girl's got
the one friend that's filthy

and she has no issue with
peeing behind a dumpster.

[audience laughs]

[jay]
when she's not filming
standup specials

all around the world,

she's hosting everything
from her podcast,

ask iliza anything,

to game shows, dating shows,
even feature films.

[giggling]

[engine roars]

[horn honks]

-I see you!
-How are ya?

How cool is this thing?

[iliza]
did you find the place okay?

[jay]
yeah!

God, you know, I remember,

I came out here years ago
and there was nothing here.

-And now?
-Well, now you got sticks and--

oh, it's just...Yeah.

Well, it's a perfect place
for a car like this.

-Not so much for that.
-You kidding? This is a hybrid!

-Uh-huh.
-One cup of gas to get here.

-Really.
-From hollywood, yeah.

-A cup, yeah.
-Just one cup.

-It was impressive.
-Well, that's a nice car.

This is a jeep gladiator
that's been heavily modified.

They had trucks similar to this
when we were in afghanistan.

Remember we went to bagram
air force base?

[iliza]
I got to see you do
standup live.

[jay]
well, that was--

it's the only time
I was actually being bombed

-while bombing.
-No, you didn't b*mb!

[jay]
but it was--I mean,

but remember,
bombs were going off.

[iliza]
one went off.

I was napping during it,
but I do remember that.

But it was really cool
to get to do that with you

and to get to do
a quick turnaround

to the middle east and back.

When I got this call,
I was like,

"jay? Desert? Say no more."

-that's right.
-"I will be there."

[jay]
jay in the desert,
what's better than that?

You drive this one
and I'll go get mine.

[iliza]
I'm getting in this car now.

[jay]
I mean,
the rezvani is pretty cool,

but I think I need something,
eh, a little more practical.

[door slams shut]

[engine rumbles]

[dramatic music]

[iliza]
I like your car!

[with bad accent]
yeah, this is called
a pinzgauer.

This is made where
schwarzenegger was born,

in austria.

It's a five-cylinder car
that is used by many people.

It's fantastic.

First introduced
in the early '70s

by the austrians,

the swiss, the uk,
saudi arabia,

albania, and even bolivia
have all used it

for military operations.

Unfortunately,

its high profile made it
extremely vulnerable

to attack from below.

Recently, it's seen
a bit of a comeback

and has found a new life
as an rv camper.

Come on, follow me.

I'm sure her car'll be fine
if we just leave it out here

in the middle of the desert,
right?

Yeah.

[iliza]
should I roll up this window?

Where's the window?

Jay, I don't know
how to roll up my window.

All right, in the center
of the dashboard

near the gear shifter,

you'll see a knob.

Put your hand
on the gearshift,

and then move your hand up
towards the dashboard.

You see those two little
indentations there?

But I don't--okay, yeah.

Okay, move it up or down.

You want the window up or down?

Oh, I see it!

Remember when I was so smug
and you said,

"you want me to show you,"
and I was like, "I got it."

this is not an intuitive place
to put the window.

It should be here.

Okay. I'm ready.

[hard rock music]

[jay]
so give me your impression
of driving that thing.

Is that the biggest vehicle
you've ever driven?

This is the biggest vehicle
I've ever been allowed to drive,

and I'll tell you what:
Today, I am a woman.

This is my bat mitzvah.

Somethin' 'bout
a man with a truck,

somethin' 'bout
a girl with a truck.

I love it.

If I had a reason
to have one in la,

but I don't need
to haul anything,

other than my career.

Yeah.

[iliza]
you don't see a lot of
big trucks in hollywood.

But you're from texas,
you gotta be used to

-this kind of terrain.
-Yeah, I mean, I'm from

a major metropolitan city,
but I will tell you,

my prom date had, like,
a dodge ram with a lift kit

and it was very cool,
sort of.

I don't drive a truck,

but there is
something about it.

I feel like an american
in this car.

I like going through that mud.

[bleep] yeah!

[jay]
now, what was
your first car, iliza?

What was the first car you got?

My first car
was a chevy blazer.

Not a jimmy from gmc,
a chevy blazer,

and it had a splash decal
on the side.

And I drove that all through
high school, college,

and out to california
when I moved to la,

and I drove it until
I got that civic hybrid,

so I've been driving that
ever since.

[mud splatters]

[laughs]

[jay]
you an outdoors person?

Do you go camping?

I mean, you come
to places like this?

I'm not against it.

I think with the proper guide,
I'd be okay with camping,

but I am a road comic,
so that makes me tough,

but I cannot distill
my own urine

into potable water.

But I think
living in california,

it's expected that
everyone goes skiing

and goes outdoors.

I'm not a hiker.

I like an indoor elliptical
with air conditioning.

[jay]
right, right.

Your idea of camping is
extended stay at marriott.

-A courtyard marriott.
-Right, exactly.

[iliza]
I played colorado recently,

and some friends came
and they were like,

"let's go on a hike."

so as a woman,
you're like,

"you know what?
We'll burn some calories,"

and it was my agent who came,

and it ended up being
a five-mile hike.

And to this day,
I haven't forgiven him.

You never go hiking
with your agent.

Always a bad idea.

[jay]
now, when you're
trekking around the high desert

in two fierce-looking vehicles
like these,

all the wild critters out here

are bound
to keep their distance.

But I think iliza
would probably prefer

they come out and say hello.

But you're a big animal person
too, aren't you?

-Yeah.
-Well, I think there are

a couple out here I think
you might get a kick out of.

-All right.
-Follow me.

Well, as it turns out,

the great outdoors has
some pretty great animals, too,

and it just so happens
we're near

the forever wild
exotic animal sanctuary,

a nonprofit dedicated
to rescuing abandoned,

abused, neglected,
or illegally obtained

exotic animals.

And it looks like
we've already made a new friend.

[iliza]
oh, it was
a banana in your pocket.

-Oh yeah.
-Okay.

[jay]
oh. Bears eat bananas. Okay.

Well, hey, you learn
something new about nature

every day!

[iliza]
is it weird to give a bear
a tropical fruit?

[jay]
now, if we can just remember
where we left her car.

[playful music]

[raptor cries]
