06x10 - Thrill Rides

Post by bunniefuu »

Time focusing.

If you can't tell, I'm very--

[engine roaring, screaming]

whoa!

That sounds like power!

Oh boy!

-Action.
-Yeah!

Tonight on jay leno's garage...

[ashton]
I love driving a car.

[jay]
that's what we look for.

Get ready for the thrill rides
of your life.

Oh, let's do it.

[jay]
'cause this show
is packed to the gills...

With the weight
of both of us in the car,

I could feel it right away.

[jay]
what you're saying is
I'm a fat-a*s.

It's real slower.
No, I know what you mean!

-All-wheel thrills...
-Thanks for the car!

[jay]
hey!

...And thrilling guests!

You and I,
we get a little excited

about these things, our voices
go up, that's what we do.

[jay]
and some scary stories.

[james]
suddenly my pants dropped

onto the floor.

[jay]
so fasten your seat belt...

Oh, no, you're not beating me.

[jay]
...And try to stay calm.

[ashton]
there are two cops behind us.

-Once we get going...
-Don't do

a preemptive scared face.

[jay]
...There's no gettin' off.

[screaming]

[birds chirping]

[ashton]
I once wore
an entire denim outfit

into your show when
you were hosting late night

just to see if you had a comment
on my entire denim outfit,

and you had no comment.

[jay]
well, 'cause it looked
so attractive.

And speaking of attractive,

I think it's safe to say

ashton kutcher's life

is lookin' pretty good.

His successful career has been
one red-carpet thrill ride

after the next,
starring on hit shows

like "that '70s show,"
netflix's "the ranch,"

and "two and a half men."

but, between you and me,

I just hope I don't get punk'd.

Now, do you have any idea
why you're here today?

[ashton]
I don't have the slightest idea.

[jay]
okay, we're calling this episode

"ashton kutcher's dream car."

these are cars
that have eluded you in life,

cars you may have dreamed about
as a child

and have not seen them since.

We have three today.

I think you'll be pleased.

-I'm--I'm excited.
-Okay.

-Are you ready to get started?
-I'm ready.

[jay]
that's right,
you're not dreaming,

you're driving.

Welcome to
ashton kutcher's dream cars.

All right, let me get
car number one.

-Am I following you or--
-no, you stay here.

Okay, I'm staying here.

So, here we are,
waiting for jay

to show up with a dream car.

I don't know what I'm supposed
to do right now except for wait.

It's actually really hard
to focus on anything

other than all of the cars
that are around you.

If you can't tell, I'm very--

[engine roaring, screaming]

whoa!

That sounds like power!

Oh boy!

Well, it's definitely a v8.

Could be a truck,
could be a muscle car.

This is exciting.

[engine rumbling]

hey, mister, get outta the way.

[dramatic music]

it's an ss.

It's just an ss.

[jay]
just an ss?

That's the understatement
of the year.

This 1972 super sport chevelle

is a fully restored resto-mod

with a muscle-bound

giving 650 horsepower

that could easily knock
ashton's socks clean off.

And if he isn't thrilled
by this slick, sleek,

four-wheeled powerhouse,

I should probably check
his pulse just to be safe.

[ashton]
american muscle car, called it.

[jay]
would this be one?

[ashton]
that's a 454 ss
right there, folks.

[jay]
that's right.

[ashton]
yeah, that could be
real exciting.

[jay]
now, why is this
an ashton dream car?

[ashton]
I'm--I'm a big
american muscle car g--

like, I really like it,
I like a big block,

I like it fast, I like it loud.

-'cause loud means fast.
-Yeah, you know,

the back tires, you can let 'em
loose a little bit.

It always goes back
to your childhood,

the car that you wanted
to, like, pull up in,

that you felt like, suddenly,

you would have a place
in the world,

and I was driving
a 1983 ford escort.

So, it wasn't this.

And as soon as you started it,

you could just hear,

it's that like growl
that these things have.

-Right, right, right.
-It's partially

the way that it sounds,

partially the sleekness
on the lines on it.

I like that it's a fastback.

So this would be a dream car?

-This would be a dream car.
-You see, I...

You even went up in your voice
when you said that.

-I get real excited.
-You see, I sense that you--

you and I,
we get a little excited

about these things, our voices
go up, that's what we do.

[jay]
I sense that
you were doubting me

when I said we had
three dream cars.

You had that skeptical look
on your face, and of course,

it turns out to be exactly
what you've been dreaming about.

This is definitely
in the dream car element.

[jay]
you ready for car number two?

-I'm ready for car number two.
-Let's get car number two.

Well, I'll make more
of ashton's dream come true

in a little bit, but first...

[energetic music]

there's not much more thrilling

than a totally pristine
ford t-bird,

unless, of course,
it's being driven

by a living legend.

-How are you, jay?
-Looks great.

You know, you never see
a stick-shift one of these.

-They're almost all automatic.
-Oh, I love stick.

That's my fav--
I learned to drive on a stick.

-Is that right?
-I took my driving test

on a stick.

[jay]
superstar marie osmond is one

of the hardest working women
in show biz,

entertaining folks
for over five decades--

acting, hosting, producing,
and singing her heart out.

But her talents
don't stop there.

She's also written three books
which have landed

on new york times'
bestseller list.

She skyrocketed to popularity
because of her megahit tv show

"donny & marie," but today,

restoring classic cars
gives her as big a thrill

as carrying a tune.

-How are you?
-I'm good, I'm good.

[marie]
it's so good to see you.

-It's been a long time.
-I know.

Probably the last time
was when we did

the tonight show together,
right?

-Yeah.
-That's right.

Well, tell me more about--

now, I know, you have
a couple of these, right?

[marie]
I do.

[jay]
I believe the correct term
for a few t-birds

is a flock, and this thing
is flocking great.

With its 312-cubic-inch,

and three-speed
manual transmission,

these birds can really fly.

[mellow music]

you had a black one, right?

Well, here's the deal.

So when I married
my first husband,

he got me a t-bird,
and I loved it,

and then I went on tour,
came back, and my car was gone.

-Where'd it go?
-He sold it

to prince's girlfriend
or something.

It doesn't get
more hollywood than that.

"I went away,
and my husband sold my car

to prince's girlfriend."

I mean, just the connect--
how did that--

we ended up getting divorced,
not because of the car...

[jay]
well, no, see, that would be
a divorceable offense.

See, if you said, "we got
divorced 'cause of the--"

yes, that would make
perfect sense to me

as a car guy, yeah.

But it was so crazy

'cause we never saw each other
for like 25 years,

and then we got back together
and remarried,

but the first gift he gave me

was my black-and-white t-bird.

And we're restoring it
right now.

We're doing a pink one.

[jay]
okay, and this belonged
to paul mccartney's ex-wife--

[laughter]

-now, what was your first car?
-It was an acadian,

which is the canadian version
of the chevette.

[jay]
oh, that's even
a crappier version.

[marie]
you are so right!

Didn't even have carpet in it,

you just hose it down.

Yeah, that was my first car.

Well, look, I know you love
t-birds and mustangs.

I got a couple of things
that you might enjoy.

-Come on in the garage.
-Oh, are you kidding?

I would love it, yes.

[jay]
and if you're a muscle car fan,

this will show you
that era is far from over.

[marie]
oh my goodness.

[jay]
this is the new mach 1 mustang.

[vibrant music]

birds are nice,
but these two horses

are pretty fantastic.

After a 17-year hiatus,

the highly anticipated
mustang mach 1

is coming out of the gates
swinging

with a furious five-liter engine

pumping out 480 horsepower.

-These are '21s?
-These are brand new, yeah.

They do have the sort of
classic, retro look, don't they?

[marie]
they do, actually.

I love the yellow.

Oh my gosh, it's beautiful.

If I were to buy it,
I think I'd buy that one, but--

[jay]
wait, wait, you think
you'd buy "that one."

I don't know what that means.

-So which one would you...
-Um, I--um...

Well, let's see,
that's automatic.

Is this a stick?

-No, they're both automatic.
-No, they're both automatic.

-I don't know.
-It's not my--

[marie]
your hair color would look
beautiful with that one.

[jay]
so you want me--
you want the yellow.

[marie]
I kind of--well,
I drove yellow in,

but I really like that color,
so you tell--you decide.

-No, all right, let's--
-I kinda like the yellow.

Okay, well,
you take the yellow.

You know,
these are pretty amazing.

[marie]
I don't know, I like this one.

-I think I'll do this one.
-You want this one?

-Yeah, I think so.
-All right, okay.

I can't decide,
but I really like both.

-Okay, well, you just--
-which one?

-You got that one.
-Oh, this one?

-This one. Let's go.
-Okay, I think that's what--

[laughing]

so...

[laughing]

[engine roaring]

be afraid, be very afraid.

[laughing]

[jay]
nothing quite as scary
as marie changing her mind

seven times!

But seriously,
I am now extra ready

to take this wild stallion on
my favorite kind of thrill ride.

[engine revving]

[rock music]

oh my gosh, listen to
this engine, it's so cool.

[engines roaring]

[laughing]

[engine roaring]

[laughing]

tell that car to move over.

[engines roaring]

[jay]
it goes good, doesn't it?

[marie]
oh yeah! Woo!

[jay]
it's a nice, well-balanced car.

It really is good.

Have you ever raced cars, jay?

[jay]
I'm not a racer.

I know my limitation.

You know, racecar driving
is like sex.

All men think they're good
at it, you know,

and you're not.

It's not until you ask
the other drivers.

[engine revving]

[marie]
hey, jay, how old
do you feel inside?

When I try to stand up, um...

[laughing]

it is funny, though.

You get older and you go,

"man, why'd I put the top
on this pickle jar so hard?"

you know, you don't realize
you lose like two percent

every year after 60, you know?

You're sitting there
going, "ahh!"

then you give it to some kid
and he opens it in a second.

You go, "oh, oh, okay."

you know, I feel like
I'm like 17, 18,

somewhere around there.

I mean, that's what
I feel inside.

But you've lived
such an incredible life.

I have too.
I've been so blessed.

Yeah, no, it's been great,
you don't see me complaining.

[engine roaring]

[laughing]

oh, wow!

Pre-collision assist, it said.

Now, that doesn't mean
you can have a collision.

That just means they tell you
it's about to happen.

So you get too close
and it tells you, huh?

Oh, you know how many idiots--

"see, you can't crash
in this car, see?"

yes, you can!

[engines roaring]

oh, let's do it.

[jay]
so long!

[marie]
oh no, you're not beating me.

[laughing]

I'll show you another cool thing
this car has:

A drag strip feature,
if you take it to the drag--

well, come on, I'll show you
how it drives on a drag strip.

-Follow me.
-Okay!

[engines rumbling]

this is too fun!

[jay]
check it out.

This mach 1's line lock
is an electric device

that keeps
the front brakes locked

while the rear brakes
remain open,

allowing the rear tires
to spin independently.

It'll be fun to show marie
how to burn some rubber.

[engines rumbling]

wanna try and do a burnout?

[marie]
jay,

I know how to do a burnout.

[engine revving]

I had a blast!
Thanks for the car!

[engine roaring]

[jay]
hey, hey!
I didn't give you the car!

Hey!

[rock music]

it appears to me the student
has become the master.

Lucky for me,
the car's got lojack.

Coming up,

throw away the doughnuts
if you wanna take a spin

with rock legend john oates.

[john]
if it's just me in the car,

I could feel it right away.

[jay]
what you're saying is
I'm a fat-a*s.

[john]
no, I didn't wanna say--

[jay]
...My fat a*s in the car.

No, I know what you mean!

[rock music]

just a few miles from my garage

is one of the premier
porsche shops in the world,

emory motorsports,
run by rod emory.

His family is the one
that originated the idea

of the outlaw porsche.

I'm sure you've heard
that expression.

[rock music]

and for those of you
that haven't,

an emory outlaw porsche
is when a standard porsche

has been hot-rodded
and highly customized

to both personalize
and pack on way more horsepower.

Come on, I'll show you
what's going on inside.

I'm about to see rod's handiwork
up close,

an impressive outlaw with
an even more impressive owner.

Hey, guys.
Wow, it looks fantastic.

And this outlaw belongs
to this guy, john oates,

half of the iconic group,
hall & oates.

As the number-one selling
music duo in history,

hall & oates soared
to the top of the charts

thanks to hit songs like
"kiss on my list,"

"maneater,"
and "I can't go for that."

he went on to have a successful
solo career as well,

but it turns out he loves cars
just as much as he loves music.

People might not know,
besides being, obviously,

a world-famous musician,
you're a racecar driver

and a lot of experience
in porsche.

Just talking with you
over the years,

you're so knowledgeable,
you could translate

-what you see to him.
-When I first met rod,

one of the things
that struck me about his work

was that he has this reverence
for the porsche history,

and at the same time,

he has a southern california
hot rod aesthetic.

And that combination
is really unique,

and I thought this is
a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

to have a car like this.

[jay]
and what a car it is.

John found a mangled

and rod transformed it
into this beauty

that is sure to get
your heart racing.

This bandit boasts
a souped-up 911 suspension

and all-new interior,
and with a custom

under the hood,
they sure don't remake 'em

any better than this.

You know, it's so funny,

it looks like a porsche,
but something is changed.

The roof is lower.

We did a couple of things
specifically for him

to make the car just really fit
his seating position.

We changed the position
of the dash,

position of the steering wheel,

position of the seat
and the shifter.

[john]
I remember coming to the shop
and getting fitted into the car,

which was really
an amazing experience

because I have custom guitars
and things like that.

[jay]
this was so subtly done,

you don't even realize
all the modifications to it.

The bumpers in the front,
the way they've moved in closer,

and obviously, no longer chrome
and the painted body color.

The wheels with
the chrome inserts,

it looks like a drum but there
are disks under there, I assume.

I could look at this
for a couple of hours

and see something different
all the time.

That's what makes it
fascinating,

that's what makes art
interesting.

It's really beautifully done.

Can we take it for a spin?

-Yeah, let's do it.
-Let's give it a shot.

[john]
this is the first time I've been
in the passenger seat, jay.

-Is that right?
-Yup.

Not a lot of people get to drive
these things, you know.

[jay]
well, believe me,
this is an honor.

Fantastic.

[engine starting, rumbling]

[engine revs]

[rock music]

[engine roaring]

oh yeah.

Very nice.

well, it's a lot more throttle
there than I thought.

[john]
yeah, it's
a long throttle throw.

-It's a long throw, yeah.
-Yes, it is.

[engine rumbling]

I've taken people for rides,
and they're kind of like,

"wait a minute,
what's going on here?"

[jay]
let's talk about
your racing career.

I mean, everybody knows
the music, obviously.

And I didn't realize until
I was doing a little research,

you did karting, right?

[john]
I started with go-karts,

went--moved up to formula ford,

and I drove formula ford,

and I got qualified,
got an scca license.

-Oh, that's great.
-I won a national

formula ford race at one point.

-Oh, there you go.
-So, you know,

I got to the point where I felt,
"hey, I can compete."

[jay]
was it always, no,
this is a hobby and it's fun,

or did you ever think
it would be a vocation?

[john]
I would've liked it
to be a vocation

had I not been a musician,
but I've been a musician

all my life and never had
really any doubts about it,

but you know what happened was,
I started to race professionally

and I had a pretty bad accident
at elkhart lake, road america.

That was the thing
that kind of, I said,

"I think I've taken it about
as far as I need to right now."

[jay]
yeah, I think it's fair to say
there's stuff you're good at

and then there's stuff
you're a natural at.

[john]
yeah.

[engine revving]

[jay]
what was your first car?

[john]
my first car, I got my parents

to buy me a renault dauphine.

[jay]
a dau--

[john]
because I loved
small, lightweight cars.

[jay]
my uncle tony had a renault.

You know, my dad,
big italian family.

Tony was an artist,

and he came home one day
with a renault dauphine,

it had the twin horn.

[john]
oh yeah, the city horn
and the country horn.

[jay]
I remember my father went,
"what kind of man

drives a car like this?

It's not a man's car!

[engine revving]

-wow.
-There you go.

[laughing]

[jay]
oh yeah, you got
all kinds of power.

[engine roaring]

[john]
and I'll tell you what,

with the weight
of both of us in the car,

big difference;
if it's just me in the car,

I could feel it right away.

[jay]
what you're saying is
I'm a fat-a*s.

[john]
no, I didn't wanna say--

[jay]
...My fat a*s in the car,
it's real slower.

No, I know what you mean!

[laughing]

[vibrant music]

it's a thrill to have you, man.

I'm glad you could take
the time.

[john]
say the word, jay, say the word.

[jay]
thank you, my friend.
Appreciate it.

-Thank you so much.
-All right.

Let's see what this thing
will do.

-Come on.
-Go!

[engine roaring]

coming up, sweet dreams
are not made of this.

-It's my dream, jay!
-It's turning into a nightmare.

[bright music]

of ashton kutcher's dream cars.

I really caught kutcher's eye
with the ss.

[ashton]
that's a 454 ss
right there, folks.

[jay]
that's right.

Yeah, that could be
real exciting.

[jay]
but what other thrills
still await ashton?

Let's find out.

All right, are you ready
to move on to car number two?

[ashton]
I couldn't be more ready.

I mean, we could stop here
if we want to stop here.

No, no, the dreams continue,
my friend.

That's the great thing
about the jay leno garage.

The dream continues.

[ashton]
I've never gotten
to pick a dream before.

[jay]
well, there you go,
you will pick a dream today,

but I wanted you to have
the choice of all three.

-Listen, I'm in.
-You could take that one,

but then you don't know
what the other two are.

[ashton]
I wanna see door number two.

Show me door number two.

All right.

Let's see if I can call it.

[engine starting]

whoa, okay.

All right, that is not
a big-block muscle car.

Oh, oh, hold on.

No.

[honking]

hello!

[jay]
hello is right,

unless you're in
the rearview mirror

of this 1969 el camino ss 396
turbo-jet v8,

then it's goodbye!

With a 325-horsepower engine,

three-speed
automatic transmission,

and dual exhaust,

it's a thrill ride
made to haul some...

[donkey braying]

this is a family show,
so just use your imagination!

[ashton]
that's a beastly el camino,
my friend.

I have not seen an ss 396.

[jay]
they were fairly rare.

[ashton]
the thing about the el camino

is that the back end
gets real squirrelly...

-Right, right.
-...Real fast.

-There's no weight there.
-Especially the 396.

Now, which one do you like
better so far?

[ashton]
I'm--I--I'm--

I'm gonna go with
the chevelle so far.

-You like the chevelle so far?
-Yeah, only just because

I haven't driven that
and I've driven--

I've driven an el c--
not this el camino,

but I'm also like kinda scared
to drive this.

-Really?
-I'm only kinda scared

-'cause I think the...
-Well, I mean,

if you're frightened,
it would be foolish

-to have you drive it.
-I think the back end...

[jay]
we could bring a man in
who could drive you.

-A real man.
-Are you?

Is that what you're
trying to say?

[jay]
if you'd like, I'd make sure

the child safety seat
was in there.

Why would you be afraid
to drive this?

I'm not afraid to drive it,

I just think that the minute
that you lay into this thing,

the wheels are gonna turn over
and then...

[jay]
but don't you wanna find out?

Uh, okay.

[jay]
all right, look,
there's one more...

[ashton]
you're asking me.
It's my dream, jay!

[jay]
before you--
it's turning into a nightmare.

Now, before--
before you make your choice,

let's see the last car,
all right?

-Okay.
-Let me get rid of this.

[bright jazzy music]

buckle up, folks,
it's time to assess and caress

with donald osborne.

okay, today's show is
all about thrill rides.

Here we have
three thrilling rides,

and speaking of that,

donald is wearing
a thrilling outfit today

from the good humor collection.

I believe that's pistachio,
isn't it?

With a bit of raspberry,
as well.

Bit of raspberry.

Well, I would give you
a raspberry right now

if I could,
but it would be inappropriate.

Tell us about the three cars
that we have.

[donald]
well, jay, we have
truly thrilling rides

in three different forms.

We have this 1972 plymouth
satellite gtx-r.

We have this 1974
bmw 2002 turbo,

and a 1964 ford fairlane 500
"afterburner."

now, where do you wanna start?

-Let's start with the fairlane.
-Okay. Well, this car to me

is sort of reminiscent
of a car called the thunderbolt.

What they did back in 1964,

ford took their 427 engine,

put it into
the fairlane body,

and then called it
a thunderbolt.

It won drag races
all across the country.

It's a thunderbolt body
heavily modified by

the extremely talented
ringbrothers out of wisconsin.

-They just do amazing work.
-They do indeed, jay.

It's got that
jack roush-prepared 427

under the hood,

and it is an amazing combination
of pure performance

and also beautifully ex*cuted
detailed custom work,

which is something
that's one of the specialties

of the ringbrothers.

They've lowered the roof
by an inch

so it just gives it
a bit of a different stance.

They've taken off
the door handles

and put in
these recessed handles,

which is so incredibly elegant.

The level of detail is just
absolutely astonishing

on this car,

and they've paid great homage
to the interior

of a 1964 ford, and yet
in a thoroughly modern way.

It's not that they just
stuck modern seats in.

-Right.
-It looks like something

that might have been done
for a very custom car

-in the time by the factory.
-Yeah, very impressive car.

What's number two?

Number two is our plymouth.

This was built by a shop at the
commission of daimler chrysler

for the 2003 sema show,

and this is the idea

of what it would be like
if they were still making

muscle cars in 2003.

So the idea was to take
this plymouth body shell

and to upgrade it.

It's got a 500-cubic-inch
wedge engine,

puts out 500 horsepower.

It's got all sorts
of high-performance parts,

but the idea is just this look.

The very wide white wheels
and the whole thing that

takes us back to the glory days
of muscle cars.

Next, we go to our bmw.

Here, we've come
from the private build

to a private build
on behalf of the manufacturer,

to the manufacturer's
own thrill ride,

and it is a turbocharged tii.

This car came
at just the right moment

and just the wrong moment.

This was the first european
production turbo passenger car.

It predates the porsche turbo
by a number of years.

-Okay.
-But this car was

an amazing thrill ride
in its time,

and it had 170 horsepower,
and you think,

"oh, 170 horsepower."

when you think about
the fact that,

with what this car weighs
and its handling capabilities,

the tii,

which was a very, very good
performer in its day,

had 140 horsepower.

-Right.
-So it was a considerable

advance on that,
and of course,

as everybody who drives
old-school turbos knows,

it's sort of
an on-and-off switch.

So when the power comes,
you have to be ready for it,

because this car goes.

And there's a wonderful decal
on the front spoiler of this car

which says "2002 turbo,"
but reversed,

so you read it in the mirror
of the car in front of you,

so the idea is, "hey!
There's a 2002 turbo behind me.

I'd better get out of the way,

'cause this guy's gonna go
blasting past me

-at any minute."
-that's funny.

[donald]
they actually were forced
to not deliver those,

because they were deemed
antisocial.

-Oh, is that right?
-Yes.

And this is the only car
as it came from the factory.

-Yes.
-So the other two are all

heavily modified;
this is the only production car.

Production car
from the factory,

-factory designs.
-Well, it's rather unfair.

This is the only
production car.

There's no comp
for either of these,

they're show cars.

So I'm not sure
how you could say

what one cost before
or now or after.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here.

This is probably
the most expensive.

I'm gonna say this has
appreciated the most

from what it cost new,

or what it was worth
five years ago.

So I would go with
this one first,

this one second,
that one third.

So you put the satellite
in outermost orbit.

[jay]
yes, the satellite
is in outermost orbit,

that's correct.

Coming up:

Donald will divulge
the dollar amounts, and then,

did james brolin get
old-school ghosted?

[james]
at two in the morning,

I was off that bed,
I'm surprised I didn't take

plaster off the ceiling
of the room.

[jay]
for more cool cars,
go to jaylenosgarage.Cnbc.Com.

[chiming twinkle]

[donald]
so of the three cars
we have here today,

five years ago,
a car like our satellite

could have been had
for about $48,000.

Today, this car would be
about $80,000.

Our ford fairlane 500
"afterburner"

five years ago would have been
about $225,000.

Today, it would be
about $350,000.

Our bmw, five years ago,
might have been about $95,000.

Today, it would be $175,000.

The winner of our
appreciation sweepstakes?

-Is me.
-Is the bmw, nicht sie.

[with german accent]
it's the car that is the winner,
not you.

The car has won.

You have nothing.

This has everything.
Thank you.

[jay]
in my heart,
you know I won.

[dramatic music]

this is just the kind
of two-lane road

out in the country
this '64 triumph bonneville

was made for.

Riding in this old classic
gives me thrills and chills,

catching speeds
up to 120 mile an hour.

With classic features
like four speeds

and a multiplate wet clutch,

this pristine beauty is ready
to meet another class act.

I'm riding this 'cause
it's just like the one

actor james brolin had
in the tv show marcus welby.

He played a young doctor

who did house calls
on a motorcycle,

and women went crazy for him.

And they been going crazy
for him ever since.

He's a real car guy
and a motorcycle guy as well.

I'm on my way to see him
right now.

[rock music]

[horn blows]

-how are ya?
-Hey, all right,

-how are you doing?
-Good!

Come here often?

[jay]
not nearly as often
as james brolin has appeared

on the big screen.

Over six decades in hollywood,

james has amassed
quite the resume

since his first major role
in marcus welby, m.D.,

and has definitely
earned his place

in the horror hall of fame
for his kitschy roles

in films like amityville horror
and the car.

[engine revs menacingly]

best of all, he has
the babs seal of approval.

-good to see ya.
-Thank you.

-I like that truck.
-Oh yeah, it's, uh, it's cute.

[jay]
this thing is fantastic.

And who wouldn't get a thrill
out of hitting the gas station

or hauling your goods
in this handsome old girl?

This original 1937 ford pickup
truck with rear-wheel drive,

will turn the daily grind

into a daily joy ride.

[dramatic music]

I remember on marcus welby,

you were the only guy riding
a motorcycle in prime time,

'cause you were like
the young rebel doctor.

I would watch and see what kind
of bike-- I think it was maybe

-a '69 triumph?
-Yeah. I had a triumph myself

when I read the pilot,

so it was because of what I had
that that's what they got.

[jay]
didn't you win an emmy
for the pilot?

-Is that right?
-Yeah, for the pilot.

[jay]
yeah, I remember
reading about it,

'cause nobody'd won an emmy
for a pilot,

-I don't think.
-No, there's a trick, too.

I was supposed to read
a love letter

of somebody that's gone,
so I said,

"gimme some eye drops,"
you know?

And so, I'm reading
and I turn around, and I...

So that's it,
that's how you win emmys.

Like motorcycles
and sensitive, oh yeah,

there you go,
the women went crazy.

We were number one
by the sixth show.

[jay]
when I was doing
the tonight show,

we were number one.

I went through 14 presidents
in my 22 years...

-Wow.
-...And one of 'em said,

"we wanna be
what's above number one."

all right,
so what do I have to do?

"well, that's what
we're looking for."

yeah. It's just very funny.

And I realized, no matter
where you are in the business,

you always get that.

You get it at the beginning,
you get it in the middle,

you get it at the end.

You feel like taking me
for a ride in this thing?

-Yes, I'd love to.
-Well, let's do it.

[engine putters]

[james]
it's not power steering,

but it's close.

-It's armstrong steering.
-Yeah.

[jay]
I've gotta ask you now
about the classic car movie,

'cause you did the movie
the car.

-Oh yeah.
-It's become like a cult film,

but it's so classic american,

just a giant car
chasing people around, I mean.

And you never found out
who was behind the wheel

or what the story was.

Look closely.

Lowering the roof three inches
and tinting the windows

gives this crazy devil car
its sinister look.

It's designed by none other
than famed automotive customizer

george barris.

This deadly lincoln mark ii
was used for close-ups,

but three others?

Well, they got sent
to their graves.

[james]
it was the highest-grossing
independent picture

of all time, to that point.

-Is that right?
-Oh yeah, yeah.

[jay]
well, you know,
it's so american.

[james]
$150 million, instantly,

and that was big money
in what year, '79?

[jay]
big money now,

considering what it cost
to make, probably.

So how did you get
amityville horror?

[james]
my agent calls and says,
"they got this book,

it's a big book right now,
they've sold five million,

and there's no script,
but you gotta read the novel."

I had this apartment where
it was at the top floor,

and there was
no air conditioning.

So it was so hot
that every night,

I would go in and literally drop
my clothes at the front door

and hang my pants on the door
of my bedroom

and flop down
and start reading the book.

Well, at two in the morning,

suddenly, my pants
dropped from the door

onto the floor.

I must've been reading
something pretty hairy.

-Right.
-'cause I was off that bed,

I'm surprised I didn't take
plaster off the ceiling

of the room.

I just started laughing
and went,

"I have to do this movie."

-and that was a huge hit.
-That was a huge hit, yeah.

-You live right in town now?
-We live in malibu,

right up at point dume.

[jay]
they still have
that nude beach at zuma,

-is that still--
-no. Long gone.

-Yeah, it's too bad.
-I was flying a kite there

one day and this girl goes,
"are you the guy from tv?"

and I went, "oh boy,
this is not a good idea."

[james chuckles]

you're naked with a kite,
you just look kinda stupid.

James, thanks for coming on,
I really appreciate it.

Thanks for inviting me,
and maybe we'll get you

-in an airplane one day.
-Yeah, that'll happen real soon.

[james]
okay. I doubt that.

[jay]
coming up:

My next ride with ashton
has its thrills.

-Yeah!
-And chills!

[tires squeal]

uh-oh. There are
two cops behind us!

[siren whoops]

[jay]
welcome back to more of
[mellow music]

ashton kutcher's dream cars.

That sounds like power!

Oh boy!

-[horn honks]
-hello.

That's a beastly
el camino, my friend.

[jay]
but what other car wonders
await ashton?

Let's find out.

Well, look, I'm gonna bring in
car number three, okay?

This one is totally different.

And you have a connection
with this car,

which will not be evident
at first.

-I have to unravel the mystery?
-Yes, but I think

you'll be stunned,

'cause we had to go
to great expense to find this.

We had to track this down.

Okay.

Lemme get it.

[quirkily suspenseful music]

[ashton]
I'm so terrified about
what is gonna show up here.

[faint humming noise]

this vehicle doesn't sound
like it's running.

-Am I meant to look?
-You can take a look.

[musical fanfare]

now, ashton's next dream car
might not be a muscle car,

but with a 265 horsepower

flat-six engine and a
four-speed manual transmission,

this all-star is a player
in the big leagues,

just like its previous owner.

-This is in the realm?
-Yes.

What is this?

[jay]
it's a porsche 930 turbo.

[ashton, stammering]
tell me what that means.

[jay]
all right. Who is your
favorite football player?

[ashton]
my favorite football player
of all time is walter payton.

-This is walter payton's car.
-You got it!

[jay]
yes, this is
walter payton's car.

-You got it!
-Well.

The reason we pushed it in
is because

there's no engine in it
right now,

the engine's being worked on,

but we said that's okay,
we wanna get it here,

so I think you'd get
a kick out of it.

But this would be a...

[ashton]
the fact that
it's walter payton's car,

that's all it needs to be.

-Exactly.
-It's unbelievable.

-It's a dream.
-Can I look around?

-It is a dream.
-You wanna sit in it?

Sit where walter payton sat?

-Can I?
-Go ahead.

[majestic music]

yep.

This feels like 34's car.

That's his car.

Wow. That's insane.

-This is bananas.
-Very nice guy.

[ashton]
that's crazy.

He was unbelievable.

[jay]
well, since this one
doesn't drive,

you have to choose one
of the other two dream cars.

Would you rather take
the chevelle or the el camino?

You wanna get over
that fear of the 396.

[ashton]
my neighbor has the chevelle,

and I'll drive his chevelle.

Let's drive the camino.

'cause otherwise,
I'm never gonna drive it.

[jay]
you wanna get over
that fear of the 396.

[ashton]
I wanna--yeah,
well, let's just see

if we can keep the wheels
on the ground.

[jay]
let's give it a shot.

[upbeat rock music]

[engine rumbling]

[engine revving]

yeah!

[ashton]
feelin' the heat.

-I love drivin' a car.
-There you go.

That's what we look for.

[engine rumbles]

it's just the growl.

[jay]
yeah.

Now, what's the first car
you had a romantic encounter in?

I think it was like
a 1986 ford tempo

-four-door sedan.
-That woulda been all you,

'cause you're not
gonna impress a girl

-with an '86 ford tempo.
-Yeah, I kinda closed the deal

-in spite of the car.
-Right. Wow.

That's impressive.

First car you got
a speeding ticket in.

[ashton]
was a 1983 ford escort,

and I drove it
as if it were a muscle car.

I lost my driver's license.

-When? What year?
-Uhh...I think I made it

until I was 17,
and then I lost it

-for too many tickets.
-Oh, is that right?

Speeding, or what?

My last violation was
a rolling stop at a stop sign.

And I begged the guy.

I was like, "listen.

I'm going to lose
my driver's license

if you give me this ticket."

he was like, "you shouldn't
have rolled through the stop."

it was on a freeway exit
on a country road.

It's hard to not speed
on country roads.

There are no other cars
around you.

[jay]
right, right.

Are there two cops behind us
or one?

-There are two cops behind us.
-Oh, there you go.

[ashton]
I didn't--

[tires squeal]

oh, whoops, cops.

That's good,
that's real smart.

-Do a burnout.
-I didn't mean to burn out!

That's what I'm saying
with this car!

-Did you get tickets--
-oh wait, hold on.

Are they following us?

Oh, great. Great.

Now we got 5-0 on our tail.

[siren whoops]

-great.
-Coming up:

Our most thrilling
thrill ride yet.

[sustained scream]

[thud]

are there two cops behind us
or one?

-There are two cops behind us!
-Oh, there you go.

I didn't--I'm gonna
explain to them--

[jay]
"your honor I was hitching

-and he gave me a ride."
-no. "your honor,

I wanted to drive
a different vehicle,

and jay questioned my manhood,
and I was like, 'yeah,

but the tires on this thing
are going to break free.'

so if you're going to give
a ticket to anyone..."

[jay]
oh geez.
Play it cool, kutcher.

Don't go to pieces on me now.

[jay]
david, are these cops with us?

-No.
-Okay.

'cause they turned around.

[ashton]
great.
Now we got 5-0 on our tail.

So gonna lose my license.

I haven't had a ticket
in a really long time,

knock on wood.

[jay]
should I tell him now or later

that this car is stolen?

[jay]
well, ashton,
thanks for coming by.

Was the walter payton car
the biggest surprise?

[ashton]
the walter payton car is
beyond the biggest surprise.

I--I never thought
I would sit in it.

-Dreams do come true.
-Dreams do come true.

[engine revs]

[rock music]

we've shot at willow springs
many times, but today,

we're here to perform
a little thrill ride experiment.

now, I've done a lot
of crazy stuff on this show

in the last six seasons...

[yelling]

[cacophony of crashing
and screeching noises]

my wife is gonna k*ll me!

...But there's
always been someone

standing on the sidelines
encouraging me--

nay, telling me--
to just do it.

And that's our
executive producer, abby.

She's a mother of two
and an experienced producer

who has no problem
putting me in the line of fire.

[abby]
nope, I'm not gonna do that.

[jay]
so when I heard that
I decided,

"yes! Yes, you would!"

now, abby has a love of cars
that has only grown

over the years on this show,

but she's never claimed
to have a need for speed.

But today, we wanna change that.

We thought,
can the regular laywoman

learn to stunt-drive?

That's what we're here
to find out.

We come out here an awful lot
to do races

and stunt driving and stuff.

I thought, if she's gonna
stand on the sidelines

and critique,

she should get behind the wheel
and learn how to stunt-drive.

-Don't you think so?
-I do, I think so,

-I think it's time.
-Come on in, guys.

Greg and tony, hi, guys,
how are you?

-Good to see you.
-Good to see you.

[jay]
okay, you have
some raw talent here.

She's observed
from the sidelines

but never actually done it.

Can you teach a novice
how to do this?

[greg]
let's get her behind the wheel.

We'll teach her
some basic stunt stuff,

and I'll have you do some
great donuts out there today,

-see if you can control the car.
-And then I can give jay a ride.

[jay]
right, yeah.

And the hoop of fire
is the most fun.

-That's the finale.
-That's the finale, yeah.

Are we ready to go?
Any apprehension, anything?

[abby]
yes, lots of apprehension--

you know, just 'cause
it looks pretty scary.

[jay]
it's no big deal,

because we could get
another executive producer

like that.

So don't even worry
about that part of it, okay?

Come on, let's go,
you ready to go?

Come on, you guys, let's go.

[abby]
speaking as
an executive producer,

what is my goal here?

Am I supposed to hit a time
or something like that?

Today.

[abby laughs]

first up:
High-speed slalom.

[tony]
try and make that corner

and you're going too fast?

Just try to push it
and the car goes this way.

-Okay.
-Good to go.

And action.

-Hard, hard, hard.
-Okay.

[tony]
slow down, slow down

turn, turn, turn,
there you go.

-I took it.
-Let's just say I'm happy

we decided to use cones
instead of people.

[abby]
oh, am I going--

all the way down.

Woo-hoo!

[jay]
looking good, abby.

[greg]
we've got two cones down,

but that's all right
for a first run.

It looked really good.

How'd that feel
in the straightaway back?

-Really fun.
-Good.

Now we're gonna move on
to donuts.

-Where do we go for donuts?
-Mm, donuts!

Knock 'em out, abby,
go do it!

Donuts are harder
than it looks.

You really need to be
at high speed,

you have to crank the wheel,

and then really stand on it.

[tony]
now, when I say stomp on it,
you stomp on it.

Don't do this:
Rrrrrr. Okay?

You're trying to break traction
with your rear tires.

-Okay, I'm gonna stomp.
-And just doing that

is just gonna drive you
in a circle.

-But he's too close.
-Don't worry, he won't be there.

-No brakes.
-You're making me nervous

-sitting there.
-Don't worry about me.

He'll tell you when.

Here we go.

Action, action!

[dramatic music]

[tony]
turn.

Stomp on it, stomp on it.

-Stomp on it!
-Oh my god!

-Stomp on it!
-Jesus!

[tony]
all right, stomp on it,
stomp on it, stomp on it.

-There you go.
-There you go!

[tony]
and hold it.

[thud]

and we just hit the camera.

[jay]
you just ran over the gopro.

[tony]
and...You just hit
another camera, okay.

Here we go, good job,
good job, good job.

[jay]
you know, producers burn out
all the time off camera.

It's finally good to see
one who does burnouts

behind the wheel.

-Why did you do that?
-That looked great!

[abby]
why's he there?
Got a death wish!

[greg]
I said only a stunt guy would
just walk right to the car.

-Reverse 180.
-All right.

[jay]
to do a reverse 180,

you need to reverse
at high speed,

whip the wheel around,
and drive away,

all without screwing up
the transmission.

[abby]
so I'm reverse.

-I turn...
-Hard.

[abby]
...And then...

[tony]
you're gonna start
swinging around this way,

and when you get halfway,
yank that into drive.

[greg]
we're ready
whenever you are.

-Is this in reverse?
-And action, abby!

[tony]
now! Hard!

Watch it.
And go, go, go, go, go!

-There you go.
-Good job.

[greg]
action!

[tony]
now.

Hard, hard, hard, hard,
shift,

and forward, forward, forward.

There you go.

Good job.

[jay]
not too shabby, abby.

After a few minutes of
extremely hasty instruction,

I'm sure abby
is more than ready

for the full-speed challenge
with me in the passenger seat.

Move over, morgan freeman.

It's driving miss jay-sy.

Action!

[engine revs]

[abby]
don't do a preemptive
scared face!

[jay]
I'm not scared, I'm fine.

No, you're doing good.

Doing good, you got it!

You got it.

-Beautiful.
-Excellent.

[abby]
where I have trouble is
when do I step on it?

[jay]
yeah, that's the part
she's having trouble with,

yeah, that's it.

Nail it right now,
bring the tail around.

There you go.

[abby]
see, now I'm doing my fishtail.

-That's good, that's good!
-No! That's not

where you do it.

[jay]
but see, that's cause you got
traction for a while.

[greg]
okay, abby, now do the circles
right here,

-just circles.
-Okay.

[engine revs, tires squeal]

[abby and jay scream]

[jay]
she's got the scream down nice.

[abby]
I think we did enough.

[jay]
abby, you did great.

-That was terrific.
-Thanks, jay.

That was a once-in-a-lifetime,
only once.

[jay]
no, no, that was good.

I-I went through a lifetime,
but yeah, that was good.

[abby]
thank you, jay.
That was really fun.

-Very good.
-That was very fun.

[jay]
well, she didn't k*ll us,

and the car is still
in one piece,

so I think that's
definitely a win.

Now it's time to celebrate
with a nice big lunch.

[abby]
gonna go throw up.

[jay]
okay, maybe not.

[abby laughs]
