03x07 - Himalayan Hell

Phaedra: Ever since
I got up this morning,

I haven't felt well,

and it's just getting
increasingly worse,

so it's making it really
difficult to function.

[ crunching ]

hey, are you all right? Phaedra?

[ vomiting ]

narrator: In the world's
harshest environments...

Two experienced survivalists

put their skills to
the ultimate test

without food, water, or clothes.

[ crying ]

narrator: Now, in the
shadow of the himalayas

in northern india,

these strangers
have to work together

to survive for 21 days...

Phaedra: I seriously
don't feel like I can go on.

Hakim: My first impression
of india was, first off, "wow."

this is an amazing place.

This is really happening,
and I'm just really excited.

My name is hakim isler.

I teach to-shin do
ninja martial arts.

I'm also an iraqi w*r veteran.

As I'm looking around
and I'm feeling the weather,

I'm gonna need some
way to stay warm,

'cause it's pretty
cool right now.

I have fire skills,
shelter-building skills,

hunting skills,
and stalking skills,

but even more so,

I'm a practitioner of
the ninja martial arts.

And the word "ninja" itself --

it actually means
"one who endures,

one who perseveres."

I'm secure in my skills.

I'm secure in who I am.

You know, I don't
have many doubts.

I was born with what it takes.

Feeling a little anxious,
but it's beautiful.

I've never seen
anything like it before.

The wilderness
is just incredible.

My name is phaedra,

and I have basically
had to be a survivalist

since the day I was born.

My father raised
us off the grid.

We lived in communes,
nudist camps.

I definitely know
how to live in nature,

and nudity's not going
to be an issue for me.

I'm kind of sad that
we're climbing higher.

It means it's gonna be
that much colder. [ laughs ]

narrator: Hakim and
phaedra are being inserted

into the northern
indian district of kumaon

in the steep,
pine-covered foothills

of the himalayan mountains.

Frigid air from the
himalayan ice fields

unleashes storms far below,

bringing nighttime
temperatures well into the 50s.

The hazardous hillsides

are populated by
asiatic black bears,

deadly leopards, and
the dreaded carpet viper,

whose hemotoxic
venom is responsible

for the highest number of
snakebite deaths in the world.

Phaedra: Growing
up the way I did

was difficult for
a lot of reasons.

The people around me were
definitely not very supportive

of me, and when I was
15, I left that all behind.

And ever since then,

I've been searching
for my place in the world

and my -- for,
really, my self-worth.

And my hope is that,
completing this challenge,

I'll be able to find that.

Okay, so, the adventure
begins. Here we go.

My skills as a ninja are gonna
apply to the survival challenge,

very simply because I
have what I call "ninjanuity,"

ability to adapt and overcome

and to see things
for what they truly are

and to make
adjustments on the fly.

Ninjanuity time.

My nickname is "black macgyver."

I'm always inventing.

I'm always creating new
ways to, you know, do things.

And so people just
started calling me --

"man, you're like
the black macgyver.

You're always coming up

with something very
inventive and very unique."

this is what makes
ninjas special.

I'm phaedra. My name's hakim.

It's nice to meet you finally.

Yeah, absolutely. [ laughs ]

very exciting. Very exciting.

You ready to have
an adventure together?

Absolutely.

Right on. Well,

I see we have our
items over here,

so I would like to
see what you brought.

I tested a lot of
different fire starters,

and this one's the [bleep]

yes.

So we're definitely
gonna stay warm tonight.

So, the tool that I
brought is my hatchet.

This item is actually
something I created.

You have a skinning blade.
You have a saw at the top.

I'm pretty excited
that you brought it.

Okay, and here's
our map. Here we go.

Looks like we're right
about -- right around here.

So...Looks like that's
where we want to be.

Narrator: Starting
at 4,500 feet,

hakim and phaedra will aim
for gullies 2,000 feet above.

There, they hope to
find a water source

where they can make their camp.

But the higher they climb,
the air becomes thinner,

making breathing more difficult

and accelerating the
effects of dehydration.

I'm gonna have to go a
little bit slower up this hill,

'cause I'm feeling [sighs]

okay.

[ breathing sharply ]

all right. I'll be okay.

Just need to get my
heart rate back down.

Just one second.

Phaedra: The
dehydration issue is huge,

and I'm starting to get
a pretty bad headache,

which starts messing with your
ability to make good choices,

so, just got to pace myself.

Should we head?

Whenever you're ready.

Location-wise,
building the shelter,

do you want to build it

where the sun is going
to hit first in the morning,

or do you want it
on the other side?

It's probably gonna be best

wherever the sun's

so many resources for us

to build our shelter
right in this spot.

We're just running out of time,

and it's, like, freaking me
out a little bit, to be honest.

we still have to gather, like,
a [bleep] ton of wood, so...

Even if we can't
get a fire tonight,

the shelter, I think,
is our best bet.

Hakim: The shelter
is what I believe in,

and it's what I know that
can really take care of us

in the long run.

There's a lot of gaps in there.

It's actually not
too bad, really.

Phaedra: The
shelter is sufficient.

I'm gonna start on the fire,
and I'm gonna get it going,

and hopefully keep it
going throughout the night.

No, this means everything.
This means life. [ laughs ]

this means we don't freeze
to death tonight...Hopefully.

Narrator: The
temperature at the camp

is around 25 degrees
less than at sea level.

Phaedra and hakim must
maintain the fire through the night.

Even though we did what we could

in the time that we could to
get the shelter built and cozy,

the temperatures are dropping.

There's just no sleep to be had.

Narrator: Already feeling

the accelerated
effects of dehydration,

phaedra and hakim
follow a stream uphill

from their campsite

in hopes of locating
fresh, drinkable water

at its source point.

Before you go
trekking any further,

can you see
anything in eyesight?

We're getting closer
to the source, I think.

You think?

I just don't want you to expend

any more calories and energy

going in a direction that
may or may not benefit us.

Think we should
explore that up there?

It's coming down off
the rocks pretty good.

I think that, if you want to
get some water from up there,

Hakim: Water from
a running stream --

that's not my first option.

It's just a recipe for disaster.

Narrator: Drinking the stream
water is a calculated risk.

It could contain bacteria

or parasites that
can cause dysentery

and other deadly
intestinal diseases.

The only safe way to procure
drinking water is to boil it.

Be careful. Okay.

Phaedra: At this point,
to be honest with you,

I just need water in me.

I don't have time to filter
this or boil it or anything.

I'm to the point of
dehydration that's not safe.

Hakim: She took a judgment call

and drank from
that water source.

I might get sick. [ sighs ]

Worst-case scenario
is she can't go on --

she can't continue today,

and she can't continue
with the challenge,

the adventure.

I can't make it back right now.

I really can't.

And I really feel like
you probably should go.

I just want to make
sure that, as your partner,

that I stay with you.

I don't want to stop you

from getting things
accomplished.

I just need, you know,

I feel like we're a team,

and so I got to
be here for her --

leave no woman behind.

to respect her wishes,

because if she's

then I'm actually adding
stress to the situation.

And so it's just better

It's absolutely critical

that we have somewhere
warm for her to be at tonight,

and so I'm gonna work my hardest

to make sure that
that's there for her.

My main purpose in
life is to help others.

so, my partner's been sick.

It's really sad.

into their three-week
survival challenge,

phaedra's decision to drink

from a potentially
contaminated water source

has put her health and the
success of the team at risk.

before they began,

experts in primitive survival
and special forces training

assessed their
skills, experience,

and mental strength

and assigned them a
primitive survival rating,

or psr.

Based on the technical skills

and leadership training
he gained in the military,

hakim was given an upper
intermediate psr score of 6.8.

Although self-taught,

phaedra's mastery of
essential survival skills,

especially fire-building,

earned her an
initial score of 6.2,

but her impulsive
decision-making

may affect more than her score.

If her condition worsens,
she may be forced to tap out,

and hakim would have to attempt

to finish the 21-day
challenge alone.

Phaedra: At this point,

I'm not feeling very
proud of myself.

I just have so much more
to offer than what I've shown.

I am so much stronger.

Hakim: I feel like we're a team,

so I got to be here for her.

So I'm digging a hole

to see if the water
will filter through.

All this sand and rock
-- if it filters properly,

it may pull out
any of the big stuff

that'll do some damage to me.

Narrator: The sand and rock
from the riverbed contain carbon,

a natural filter that
will hopefully remove

any of the impurities
from the water.

Is that well, do you think,
okay for me to drink out of yet?

I drank out of it. Okay.

Replacing the fluids phaedra
has lost due to vomiting

will be essential in
her ability to recover.

How are things going?

They're going.

So, right now, you're
rebuilding the shelter.

And then, I assume we don't
have any firewood yet, right?

There's no firewood.

If we can gather two
hours' worth of firewood

at the end of
building this thing,

then I think we'll
be good to go.

So you feel like we can
survive the night without a fire?

Absolutely.

I don't know if I feel that way

based on how cold
we were last night.

I have personal experience
being in 18-degree weather

in a debris hut and
being super toasty.

Being up for another full night,

trying to stoke the fire is --
we just can't have that again.

It's fine. I'm fine doing it.

I just...

As this is kind of progressing,
there's a pattern starting,

probably because of
me in a lot of ways --

the fact that I am allowing
him to make all the shots,

and I'm just real
angry about it.

Hakim: When it's
something that she wants,

she goes all-out, gets it done.

But if I'm saying that, "hey,
here's what I think we need,"

then she has to take a rest.

Then she'll do some
work for 30 minutes,

and then she'll feel sick again.

And so that's when I
feel really frustrated.

These nights have
been challenging.

It's been unseasonably
cold in india.

I'm really worried that...

I won't be able to stay
warm enough tonight.

Oh, damn.

so, my partner's been sick

for the first four days
that we've been here.

Ohh.

And she doesn't
want to -- I know that.

But right now she needs to be
getting some medical attention.

Narrator: Concerned that
phaedra's persistent vomiting

and diarrhea could be signs
of a serious intestinal infection,

producers intervene and send
in medics to assess her condition.

She is diagnosed with dysentery,

for which no
treatment is necessary,

and she's allowed to
continue with the challenge

if she chooses.

yesterday, specifically,

then you were up,

Hakim: Empathy is, in
the spectrum of a ninja,

is very important --

to be able to feel what
that person is going through.

But if that starts
to destroy you,

that could put you
in a really tight spot.

And so you can't
really be a protector

if your own personal
being is being degraded.

Narrator: Every freezing night is
making hakim and phaedra weaker.

Without food,
they are struggling.

Hakim continues to
improve the shelter,

while phaedra focuses
her limited energies on fire.

How you feeling?

Phaedra: I do have
very strong opinions

when it comes to
male/female roles,

and I don't deal well with
being put in a box as a female.

He's been bossing

and it's really annoying.

Hakim: I am frustrated because
there is so much to be done.

There is a time when a person
goes from being a possible asset

to a hindrance, somebody
who's holding you back.

So, I feel like we haven't
really been a team.

And so I really wanted
to take an opportunity

to ask you what you think
could improve that scenario,

that position.

ago showing signs of weakness

is a disappointment,

and I'm looked at
as a pathetic woman.

You know, I told myself
many a times that no one,

especially another man,

would ever do something
like that to me again,

and it definitely triggers
that response of panic for me

and makes me act irrational,

and it's embarrassing, so...

So, today, I obviously wasn't
acting [chuckles] very nice,

and I feel really
bad about that.

I realize that you were,
like, doing your very best

and you've been working all day.

And not only that,

but you were very
concerned about me,

and that's an amazing
quality of yours.

nighttime temperatures.

The decision to start a
new shelter from scratch

is a risky one.

They must work
quickly to finish it

or face a night completely

slats of wood as our wall,

and then we're gonna put
some mud and dirt over that

to help us keep the wind out.

right on the side

stable as possible

so we can have a good fire.

I know we were talking

Narrator: A crab of this size

contains, at most, an
ounce and a half of meat.

If they share it,

it will yield only
about 20 calories

and 4 grams of protein each.

We're about to cook up some
crabs that we found today --

cooking them on a hot stone.

It's been from my
experience that,

if you share food
together with one another,

it actually, I mean,
brings us together

and makes us get
along a lot better.

Phaedra: I'm so
dehydrated right now.

We didn't -- haven't
eaten for days.

days of struggle,

hakim and phaedra
have finally built a shelter

strong enough to protect
them from the extreme cold

of northern india,

but they have subsisted on
very limited amounts of food.

narrator: Over the
next three days,

they focus their full attention

on hunting and
foraging for food.

this red-billed blue magpie

would provide about

but it could also
contain diseases,

Phaedra: Birds really
carry so many diseases.

-- I mean, if they're dead,

there's something bad
that happened to them.

I say we go back to
the hut and start a fire,

cook it, eat it, and then
we move on with our day.

I just don't want
to get sick again.

One week out.

Dude, me neither, but
we do need the energy.

All you can use is, you know,
your logic and your deduction.

look at it. You touch it.

and then you want to make a

where we've gone days without
really having any type of meal,

it's only so long we're
gonna be able to survive

without eating some
sort of substance.

I really don't want
to eat this thing,

but at the same
time, I really do.

'cause extraction
day -- I will carry you,

The amount of meat
that's on this is huge.

Narrator: A powerful cold front

has suddenly moved
in from the north,

bringing winds over
30 miles per hour

and the first serious test of
the survivalists' new shelter.

[ thunder crashing ]

you can hear, in the
background, major thunderstorms.

We gathered as much
firewood as we could,

and now we've just
kind of hunkered down,

and we're trying to stay warm.

I don't feel like our shelter
is ready for a storm at all.

It's not like a
regular rainstorm.

It's like death.

Narrator: 16 days into their
3-week survival challenge

in the himalayan
foothills of northern india,

hakim and phaedra's initial
primitive survival ratings,

or psrs, are being affected
by their performance.

Phaedra's sickness from
drinking untreated water

has slowed her
down significantly,

putting great strain
on her teammate.

Hakim has demonstrated
great work ethic,

but struggled to control
his frustrations early on.

Despite their troubles,

both contributed equally
to their impressive shelter,

which will raise their scores,

but only if they're able to
survive the current storm

and make it to their
extraction on day 21.

last three days,

a brutal storm has
forced hakim and phaedra

to bunker down in their shelter,

unable to venture out for food.

Phaedra: It's not like
a regular rainstorm.

I'm so dehydrated right now.

We haven't eaten for days.

we're just trying to
keep the fire going,

keep it warm in here.

narrator: Beaten down,
exhausted, and starving,

they are one day away from
a demanding extraction hike

back down the mountainside.

Phaedra: I feel
really exhausted.

Like, I feel this, like --

like, it's hard for
me to just function.

Mentally, I'm,
like, not, you know,

running on all cylinders.

Hakim: I'm really exhausted.

But...

Making sure I'm
there for my partner

so she can get some sleep.

We got a long trek
ahead of us tomorrow --

has flared up once again.

Hakim: I'm definitely
worried about her.

I've been worried
about her since day 1.

I feel nauseous.
It's just I feel sick.

Hakim: She can't
keep water down --

that means that she's
gonna be severely dehydrated

trying to make this trek.

How you feeling?

I'm not so nauseous
anymore, so that's good.

Phaedra: The hike out's
gonna be kind of difficult

because I woke up feeling
good, but as soon as I get up,

I start feeling really sick.

Um, I just...

I think I'm gonna throw
up. Hold on one second.

Hakim: I may have to put
her arm around my shoulder

or over my shoulder and just --

you know, we just take
it one rock at a time,

trying to get

their extraction point,

hakim and phaedra must
descend 2,000 feet in elevation

over a distance of 5 miles

through treacherous
streams and ravines

to a road where they'll be
rescued by a land vehicle.

Phaedra, give me a
second. [ chuckles ]

let's move together.

Take your time.
We're not in a rush.

You okay?

Yeah.

[ shivering ]

damn, I'm getting
so cold right now.

[ blows ]

I need warmth.

I need hydration.

It's crippling me.

All my limbs are just,
like, freezing right now.

Gonna take a little
second. Hold on.

Okay.

You just keep being
an inspiration, phaedra.

The reality is I have
what it takes to do this.

My body has it. It's in there.

I just have to find it.

Okay.

[ breathes sharply ]

I'm feeling kind of
sick, but I'll be fine.

I just -- I just
need to get there.

Hakim: Okay.

I don't feel like I have
much more in me, actually.

Oh, you got way more, phaedra.

We're gonna finish
this thing together.

Yeah.

Hakim: There is a special power
that I acknowledge in my partner.

I think I'm okay.

There's a person inside
of her that does not quit,

that does not give up.

Look at what that is up ahead.

Looks like a road.

Oh, my god.

I hear a car.

Hakim: She thought she was
strong enough to do it without me.

I thought that I'm strong
enough to do it without her.

But...We weren't.

We had to do it together.

Teamwork is the primary reason

that we crossed
that finish line today.

She will take a knee, I'll
pull out my ninja sword,

and I will knight
her. [ chuckles ]

she will be an honorary ninja.

We're going home
with the chickens!

[ laughs ] these
are gonna get eaten.

I came into this hoping
for a change inside myself,

hoping to find that
self-confidence,

and I-I truly have.

I saw a really ugly
side of myself out here,

but I also saw a
positive side of myself.

And I saw that I can be a
strong, independent woman

without losing my
temper or being angry.

And even though we
had our differences,

in the end, I could trust hakim
and he did have my back.

And there's no way
I could do this alone.

Hell, yeah!

[ laughs ] we did it!

Narrator: Over the course of
the three weeks in northern india,

the physical transformation

experienced by the
survivalists was dramatic.

Phaedra lost a
total of 22 pounds,

while hakim lost 36 pounds.

Hakim showed
impressive skills throughout,

and despite an early conflict,

proved to be a very dependable
and supportive teammate.

Phaedra's risky decision
and subsequent sickness

put a strain on the team,

but she showed
incredible fortitude

to get through the 21 days.

As a result, hakim's score
improved from a 6.8 to a 7.4,

and phaedra's psr
improves from a 6.2 to a 6.9.

First time brushing
my teeth in 21 days!

Narrator: After a few
days recuperating in india,

both survivalists are now
home and back to full health.

This has to go.

Just at the doctor's office to
get some blood work done.

But, you know, overall,
I feel really great.

I'm getting my weight back
up, about to eat some ribs.

Narrator: They
resolved their differences

and worked together to
take on the extremes of india.

Working as a team enabled them

to pool their skills
and experience,

thus proving they can survive...
