Stomach won't
stop growling.
Our bodies are slowing
our metabolism down
And it's attacking
the muscle.
*Bleep*
I'm watching him
deteriorate slowly.
You seriously need
to chill out.
Last night sucked.
I'm just not
there anymore.
-He needs to rest.
-I can't do it.
Narrator: one man...
And one woman...
I'm not leaving!
...alone for 21 days...
What is that?
...with no food...
Oh, god, I'm freezing.
...no clothes...
Aah!
...no water...
Aah! Move!
Do they have the skills
and the will...
Hurts.
...to overcome the most primal
survival challenge
Of their lives...
...naked and afraid?
Woman: I'm terrified.
Captions paid for by
discovery communications
It's still a little bit cold,
so I'm a little nervous
About taking my clothes off
in this environment,
But I'm going to have to,
so that's that.
My name is giovanna.
I'm from prescott, arizona,
And I run the beer program
at a pub.
I started getting into survival
a couple of years ago.
My husband worked
in special operations
Where he had
his survival training.
He came home with this book
called "survival."
June 1992 version of the
survival handbook for the army.
My bible, pretty much.
I kind of grew really obsessed
with all of the materials
That he brought home,
so I'm really just self-taught.
Primitive survival draws me
in because it's hard.
I like doing things
that are hard.
I think they have a lot
more merit in the end.
Narrator:
giovanna is both physically fit
and mentally strong.
She's studied wild edibles
As well as primitive hunting
and trapping techniques.
But her lack of
hands-on experience
Could hinder her
survival chances.
Giovanna's primitive survival
rating, or psr, is set at 6.2.
Wes: I'm excited,
I've got butterflies.
I'm pumped,
I'm ready to go.
I mean, I've just got
to get this started
So I can burn off
some of this energy.
Hopefully I won't
burn off too much.
My name's wes.
I'm from san antonio.
I'm a risk-taker.
I like to play a lot
of adventure sports
Like hang gliding,
Rock climbing, kite boarding.
I've been practicing survival
almost all my life.
I grew up outdoors.
That really gave me
an opportunity
To hone some of my skills.
I know that I'm mentally strong,
That I've got
the physical skills.
I'm really confident that I can
make it in this challenge.
Narrator: as an athlete,
wes' physical fitness
Is an advantage,
but his hard-charging nature
Could work against him
on a 21-day challenge.
He begins with a psr of 7.3.
Wes: my approach to survival
is set my goals,
Have a big task each day
that I want to accomplish.
It's an active approach,
but I'm still cognizant
Of caloric expenditure.
You ever have one of those
"oh, *bleep*" moments?
I'm having one right now.
Here goes everything.
My approach to survival
is really based on my philosophy
That we're not out here
to conquer the forest.
Nature's not a b*tch.
Nature's just nature.
I think one of
the most important things
Is to embrace it and,
you know, just be an animal.
All right,
let's do this.
I'm looking at this guy
And he seems like
he's pretty fit.
That's good.
I know that he's
going to be active.
Howdy, partner.
How you doing?
Good, how are you?
I'm wes.
Giovanna.
Giovanna, nice to meet you.
You, too.
Yeah, are you ready
to get this started?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, his and hers here, yeah?
Yeah, looks like it.
Narrator: in addition
to a machete,
Wes and giovanna have
each picked one survival item.
This big green thing
is my mosquito net.
Awesome.
My husband took this
On a couple deployments
with him.
Cool.
Hopefully multiple uses.
That's awesome.
Yeah.
Well, I've got...
A firestarter.
Perfect.
I believe I have the map.
Yay.
Let's see what we've got here.
We definitely want
to head down
Towards this river
for sure.
Yeah, head for that
big fruit tree?
Absolutely.
Bears and pumas,
maybe we'll catch a glimpse.
I hope not.
We definitely want to head
in this direction.
Yeah, I agree.
Yeah, okay.
You can lead.
All righty.
Giovanna:
so I'm kind of like keeping
my eye out for snakes.
Narrator: wes and giovanna will
have to watch their step.
The cloud forest of maquipucuna
conceals many dangers
Camouflaged in the thick brush.
Fer-de-lance snakes
can strike without warning.
Pumas also move swiftly
through the dense vegetation,
Leaping onto the back
of their victims
To deliver
a suffocating neck bite.
Wes:
what happens if we're out here
on day one and it just rains?
And it's pouring rain.
Yeah. We're screwed.
Narrator:
wildlife is not the only
threat in these mountains.
Mother nature batters the area
with thunderstorms,
Dumping more than 130 inches
of rain annually.
Wes: the number one danger
is the environment,
Getting cold and
getting hypothermia.
That's what I'm concerned
most about.
Narrator: at an elevation
of 10,000 feet
And constantly
shrouded in cloud,
Giovanna and wes face nighttime
temperatures in the low 40s,
Putting them at high risk
of hypothermia.
I think I hear water.
I hear water, too.
Like, I hear big water.
Yeah.
Oh, look at that!
Oh, big water!
That's what we need
right there.
That is amazing.
So, that must be
the fruit tree.
You want to go
a little farther?
Yeah, let's scout it out
a little bit.
This looks kind of awesome.
Yeah it does.
Right?
Yeah, it looks great.
It looks level.
It's up off the river a little.
Yeah, I like it.
It's off the trail.
Okay.
So we're in our spot.
I think this spot is
a great spot for shelter
Because we're
a little bit elevated
So it's not as cold at night
As if we were right
next to the river.
We're close to a bamboo patch,
some big leaves,
And the fruit tree's
just a little walk.
Down to business.
Aiee!
I knew that was going to happen.
Damn.
I am just -- I've got to
slow down, injuring myself.
I get excited and get pumped up
and I have to tell myself,
"Slow down, dude,
you're going to get hurt."
Giovanna: I learned how to weave
palm fronds on youtube.
We can use them
as shingling or as bedding,
Give a little comfort
and warmth.
It gets pretty cold
here at night.
You know, building a small,
you know, well-insulated shelter
And having a fire right off
the bat for that first night
Is going to be incredibly
important to our survival.
Wes: we've got to get a fire
going before we lose light.
Giovanna: okay.
So I'm just going to see
what we can do here.
Yes.
It's not lighting.
It's way too moist.
This forest is so humid.
The same thing
that makes all these
Amazing resources available
Is also the enemy of fire.
Things don't burn
very well at all.
*Bleep*
I was actually getting panicked,
because I was like,
"I don't want to be
out here without fire."
Maybe give it a little time
to build
Before you give it
a ton of air?
Yeah.
Okay, let's let it burn
A bit before we...
Oh, yes.
I'm going to
let you do it.
Yes, yes.
You need more?
Wah!
Keep it going,
keep it going.
Gio was calm,
got control of it.
Once she got that coal, man,
She blew it into flame
like a pro.
Way to go, man.
Here I am, the *bleep*
that brings a firestarter,
I can't even get a *bleep*...
I was feeling so bad.
That's a fire. We're okay.
Now I'm pumped.
I'm ready to
go do some work.
So, how was
the first day?
I am *bleep* tired,
and really thirsty.
So far, so good.
I don't want to jinx it.
Don't rain.
Hopefully we get no rain
over the night.
We're waiting on
our water to boil.
Hopefully it
boils soon.
We dropped some hot rocks
in it to speed it up.
So far, no go,
But it's kind of
moving around.
It looks like
it's about to boil.
It's morning, day two.
Our first night
wasn't so bad.
I'm out here this morning
just kind of moving around.
We're hoping we can
find us a good...
Good breakfast source
this morning.
I'm going to run up
and scout the tree
That we want to
get the fruit from.
Nice.
Do you want me to come with?
Sure.
We know that there's
A fruit tree down here
near our shelter.
We caught a glimpse
of it on our way in,
Which is great for us
for a source of food.
I'm just checking for snakes.
Oh, yeah.
They may be around
that fruit tree to catch
Whatever's coming
to eat the fruit.
I'm good.
Thank you.
So we're here?
Yeah, it's this tree.
See how it's bent?
I hate to cut it down.
I'd much rather
try to climb it.
Okay.
Do you want me to spot you?
I'm good. You get up there
and cut that limb.
Moss is slippery.
Oh, man.
*Bleep*
Moss is slippery.
Giovanna: oh, man.
*Bleep*
Woo-hoo-hoo!
Woo-hoo!
Woo!
Are you okay?
Yeah, no, I'm good!
I hear this branch breaking
and I think, "oh, *bleep*.
Here we go.
I'm going to get injured.
This is going to take me
out of the challenge."
But luckily there was
the vine system there
To kind of save my butt.
Well, so much for not
taking down the whole tree.
Yeah.
I didn't -- oh!
Woo!
Oh, my god.
That's one way
to get down.
*Bleep*
yeah, we got food!
And we got some food.
Wes is a little bit intense.
He's not afraid to risk injury
for a positive outcome.
They all look
pretty yellow.
Yeah, here's some.
Good, good, good.
We need green, right?
Yeah.
Wes: I'm going to go cut
some of that heart of palm
That's real juicy,
And then we can have
some of that, too.
Giovanna:
oh, we are having breakfast,
all right.
Absolutely.
Giovanna: keep an eye out
for rock spiders.
I saw one earlier.
So how's your heart?
That was quite
the adrenaline rush, yeah?
I'm okay.
I'm used to it.
Are you?
Oh. These are not ripe.
They're not?
Well,
Still a fun ride.
Double bummer,
the fruit wasn't ripe,
So I don't think
we'll be returning there.
Well, we didn't waste a lot
of effort to get them, anyway,
So it's not like
we're starving right now.
Right?
Let's get it going.
Yeah. Come on, water.
Go.
I'm really --
Oh, I think I see --
did you see bubbles, or...
No, do you?
I can't tell.
I can't wait
till it boils.
Can't wait until it cools off
and we can drink it.
We're super thirsty.
I've decided to dig a well.
We're going to move
away from boiling.
It's taking too long
and we're getting dehydrated
Waiting on that to boil.
I'm trying to get the parts
That are going to fall off
and fill it back up.
I'm trying to get
those out of the way,
But I think we're getting there.
You know, I think if
we build this filter,
We can take it
right out of the river.
Probably so. Yeah.
I mean, if that's not done yet.
I don't see why not.
Giovanna:
boiling water in bamboo
takes upwards of 10 minutes,
And the bamboo degrades
really quickly
And you need to use
green bamboo,
Which is kind of thorny.
So all in all,
the whole process
Of boiling water
has been a challenge.
Wes: gio decided, "hey, we'll
make a little charcoal filter."
This came off a piece of bamboo.
It's just like a husk.
So it's like
a ready-made cone
And I'm just going to layer it
full of layers of leaves,
Dirt and gravel,
and charcoal.
It's not a terribly
complicated design.
It's great.
Here you go, wes.
It's probably
a little charcoaly.
Wes: gio is
the type of person
That she can see one thing
And then she'll just come up
with this great idea
And we just go with it,
So I'm glad to have her
as my partner.
Mmm.
That's good.
You want to take the net,
or do we just
Want to hack it
when it comes out?
Oh, yeah, we need the net.
We need the net.
We're trying to find ways
to get animals
Without expending
a lot of calories,
So we're going to
smoke out some holes.
Oh, hell yeah.
I'm hoping even if an armadillo
Doesn't come out,
maybe a snake will come out.
Maybe they'll get in there.
Something.
Something.
Something that's meat.
Okay.
We're going to put one person
At the exit of the hole,
and the other person's
Going to be
at the front of the hole
Trying to smoke out any animals
that may be in there.
Giovanna: you want to trade up,
or are you okay?
Wes, you should rest.
No, I'm good.
Giovanna: knowing wes now for
only a couple of days,
I can already tell that
he's full-throttle all the time.
You know, he's got
a lot of energy,
But it's a little worrisome.
I don't want him
to burn out too soon.
Wes, want me
to take over?
I don't want you
to get smoked out.
All right. I'll let you try.
Okay.
*Bleep*
That made me
get lightheaded.
*Bleep*, smoke is rolling
everywhere now.
I was a swimmer.
Oh, if he's in there,
he's got to come out.
He got to come out.
It's going out.
Okay. That's okay.
You know what we could do?
We could plug all
the holes with moss.
We'll see which one
is uncovered.
And we'll know
something's in there
Because we plugged
all the holes with moss.
What do you think?
It's a good idea.
We'll keep trying.
Good effort.
Yeah?
We didn't expend
very many calories.
No.
Probably lost
Some lung function,
but...
Huh?
Yeah, I'm good.
Giovanna: okay, so we're
going to bring the machete
And like maybe
a snake stick or two?
Yeah.
Well, right now,
We've just had
a vegetarian diet,
And so it's important
for us to get protein.
All right,
I'm ready when you are.
Yep.
Let's go.
Giovanna: we're going to
go on a hunt today
And see if we can't
find something.
We're looking for snakes
and snails mostly.
We need to pay attention
to the trees, too.
Yeah.
We could get into something
We haven't seen yet,
like that.
What is that?
Oh, my god.
That's a beehive.
Are you sure
that's what it is?
Or wasps.
Yeah.
Those are wasps.
Oh, he's got honey.
He just dropped
something out of it.
Wasps don't have honey.
I'm going to hit that.
Oh, my god.
I'm not doing it today.
Okay, good.
I hit that son of a g*n
and we run like hell.
That might be a good
viable option for protein
If we don't get a snake.
Wes, you've got to remember
those are wasps.
I understand.
Every single one of
those could sting you.
Yeah, multiple times.
I mean, they can outrun you.
I know.
Wes is full of ideas.
Some of them are, like,
practical for our survival,
And then some of them
are just completely terrible.
Oh, look,
we got a...
Oh, I see fruit.
I do, too.
These look like oranges.
What?
Oh, you've got to
be kidding me.
Holy *bleep*.
Dude, let's have a snack.
You are not *bleep*.
Oh, my god.
All that flavor.
This is a game-changer.
Cheers.
I couldn't even wait.
I just had to bite into it.
Oh, that's a lemon.
You think that's a lemon?
Mm-hmm.
That's a meyer lemon.
That's why they're orange.
Oh. I don't give a *bleep*.
It tastes like
freaking orange to me.
Making my eye twitch,
it's so sour.
I'm just ecstatic.
I know this is going to save us.
Just another source
of nutrition.
I mean, I hate to hike back up
here every time we get some.
No, I say we each take
at least five.
Okay.
I feel so amazing right now.
I was not prepared
for the amount of energy
And just like feel-good
That just finding this
lemon patch would give me.
What do you do when life
gives you lemons?
Eat them.
Eat them and say,
"This is freaking awesome."
*Bleep*
Giovanna:
last night, wes saw something
that he said it was black,
So we don't really
know what it was,
But whatever it is,
we're going to eat him.
Oh, look here.
Look at that.
Oh, my god.
You know what that is.
That's a cat!
Yep.
It's a big cat.
That's the first sign
of them I've seen out here.
We've got one,
two, three, four.
Oh, my god.
That's intense.
Here's another one
right here.
Mm-hmm.
We saw some cat tracks
Less than a hundred yards
from our shelter.
Well, that's slightly
disturbing.
Yeah.
It worries me a lot.
We need to be extra careful to
always have the machete nearby,
Always keep our fire going.
We just need to be cognizant
that that danger's there.
I'm going to go start
getting some rocks.
You should rest.
You can take a nap
if you feel like it.
I will after
I get some rocks.
Okay.
I'll get a few and then once
I feel really super exhausted,
I'll come and take a nap.
Giovanna: you're doing a lot
of walking today.
Wes has admitted himself
that he hates doing nothing.
He's always moving,
he's always doing something,
He always has ideas
and projects.
I'm going to make us
a little redneck hot tub.
He can't just
sit in one place.
He can't just relax,
you know, daydream, rest.
It's reaching that point
where we really need
To start doing small tasks
And then resting if we're
going to make it to the end.
This beautiful day
has turned into
A thunderstormy,
rainy mess.
Wes: now we're about to find out
how good our shelter works.
Narrator: for the next 24 hours,
wes and giovanna
Are still confined
to their shelter
As they continue
to battle heavy rains
And frigid temperatures.
Wes: it's been
raining pretty hard.
Fire's still going good.
Um...
We're...
Having trouble sleeping,
though,
Because it is really
cold right now.
Yeah.
Especially in the rain.
Yeah.
I don't know if you
can see that or not,
But we can see our breath.
And that's way too cold
to be naked,
And I'm freezing.
Wes: I kind of
hit the wall today.
Not feeling real good.
Last night sucked.
It rained a lot.
It was cold.
And we're just having
a real difficult time
Finding a good position
to sleep in,
So I'm paying
the price right now.
Giovanna: I'm going to
go to the creek.
I think I may be able
to make it.
Do you want to?
You sure?
Yeah, yeah.
I don't want to burn you out.
Well, I'm getting
cold in here,
So it's either going
to be the cold...
I'll feel better when
I get up and move around.
Yeah?
I just hate laying
down like this.
I'm still mentally strong.
I mean, I'm still in this game.
I just -- I hate sitting around.
If I can be physical,
Then I don't have to
think about anything
Other than the task
that I'm doing.
Giovanna:
I would think snakes would want
to hang out down here, too,
Because little creatures
come for drinks, you know?
Wes: mm-hmm.
I agree.
But it's kind of dark
down here now.
You know, it feels like there
are no snakes in this jungle.
What happened here?
Oh, they're fire ants.
Oh, *bleep*.
Ay-yi-yi.
They're all over.
Damn.
Mean, mean ants.
Hang on, that made me
get lightheaded.
Hang on.
Okay, I'm good.
Yeah?
Yeah.
I could tell because
the sound went down.
Oh, weird.
My hearing.
Yeah.
I'm having, like,
If I stand up too fast,
I get real dizzy.
I'm having balance issues.
*Bleep*
oh, I'm okay. Yeah.
Giovanna: when I met wes,
he was very fit and muscular,
And he kind of just looks like
he's melting now.
I'm watching him
deteriorate slowly.
This late in the game,
he needs to rest.
Wes is feeling
pretty crappy
After that long hike
this morning,
So I'm just exploring down
the opposite side of the path.
A snake!
*Bleep*
I've got snakes
on the brain, you know,
Looking for tails
disappearing into the,
You know, into the leaves and,
you know,
Quick-moving things.
I see this giant snail shell
just right by the creek.
It doesn't seem real.
I go over to it,
I pick it up,
And it's this huge,
giant snail.
It's really heavy
and he's really beautiful,
And he's going to
be delicious.
Hey, wes.
What's going on?
I was wondering if you
might be interested
In having giant snail
for lunch?
Oh, lookie there!
Feel how heavy he is!
He's like five pounds!
That's just solid meat.
Yeah.
Holy *bleep*.
That's awesome.
Yeah.
I've never seen
a snail that big.
We needed that.
That's going to feel real good.
I mean, to have that
amount of protein,
Our bodies are slowing
our metabolism down
And it's attacking the muscle,
so we need protein.
I got a little bit of firewood.
Did you? Okay.
I'll collect some more
on my way up there.
I'll meet you up there.
Giovanna:
I was planning on bringing
some back with me,
But I was like, "woo!"
When I got this thing, so...
Keep your eye on him,
because I know he's fast.
He might get away.
I know.
Wes: it looks like pork.
Yeah, it looks like pork.
Yeah, that's going
to be so good.
What does it taste like?
Oh, my god.
Kind of tastes like pork.
And a little bit
like snail.
Mm-hmm.
Giovanna: it was
so wonderful to eat it.
I mean, to have hot food to chew
and swallow and, you know,
Kind of just like nourish us
was just absolutely wonderful.
Good day.
Mm-hmm.
Woo!
I feel really good today.
Woohoo! Woo!
That protein from the snail
made a big difference.
I can feel it.
You know, I can feel the energy,
And I was able to get up
and get moving, get things done.
I went out foraging
and got out to where it tees,
And just decided,
"Hey, I'm only 30 minutes away
from where the lemons are,
I might as well make a run."
That is awesome.
I feel like I'm tired.
And I'm lightheaded.
Oh, *bleep*.
Do you want some water, wes?
You sure?
I see that pile of lemons.
So you probably know
what I'm going to say, right?
If I had known that
you were going up there,
I would have tried
to talk you out of it,
Because I really think
you burn more calories
Than you are bringing in.
My original intent
wasn't to go.
I had already gone
30 minutes up the trail
And I'm, like, foraging.
You know, I was
just taking my time.
I was like, "you know what?
I'm pretty close to it.
I might as well go."
So I just went.
And, you know,
it's a risk.
I know. I understand.
I'm hard-headed sometimes.
He's gone all the way
to the lemon tree.
I don't know how many miles
that is, five miles,
Expending tons of energy.
I'm not his boss,
but he is my partner,
So what he does
affects me directly.
And that's my nature.
But, again,
If you burn yourself out,
you're hurting me.
No, I completely agree.
I completely agree.
You seriously need to
chill out a little bit.
I agree.
I agree.
No more four-mile hikes
when we are not eating.
Like, that's not...
Yeah.
It's just --
it's really unwise, you know?
Rest is just
as important as work,
If not more so this late.
He needs to be
constantly reminded of that.
It's super cold.
Are you serious?
Giovanna: last night
started with wes
Saying that he wanted
to tap out.
I'm a little bit
mind-blown, frankly.
And this kind of
came out of nowhere.
He didn't really talk about
wanting to tap
Or thinking about it.
I mean, it just feels like
a brick wall.
It's really strange.
Yesterday, I went out foraging,
and it was a big mistake.
I overdid it.
Physically, I'm drained.
Now, not being able
to move around,
Having to stay in the shelter
because I'm so drained.
I don't want to lay around
and watch gio do work, you know,
While I sit around
and ride her coattails.
That's not me.
Giovanna:
I'm a little apprehensive
about sleeping out here alone.
Probably the thing
I'm most scared of
Is not being able to share body
heat with my partner tonight.
It's just too cold
at night alone.
It's too cold.
Well, I'm going to --
I'm going to stay.
Are you serious?
Oh, my god.
Thank you.
Whoa.
That's good.
I thought I was just
going to wave good-bye to you.
Sorry to put you
through that.
Well, I'm going to go get
in the sunshine and warm up.
Yeah, okay.
Okay.
I'm just going to keep
gathering firewood.
Okay.
Wes: it's still
going to be tough,
But I couldn't ask
for a better partner.
I don't want her
to be alone at night.
But now the mental part's
kicking my butt.
I mean, you know,
It's going to be tougher,
And...
I just...
I just can't.
I can't.
*Bleep*
I can't do it.
I'm sorry. I'm trying to --
I can't do it.
I'm done.
I'm going.
I'm sorry.
I can't do it anymore.
I'm done.
I just don't have
the energy to do it.
Where do I go?
You're 100 percent sure?
I'm just done.
I've just expended
too much energy
And I'm just
not there anymore.
I don't want to be
a part of the challenge.
It's day 15.
I know.
You know?
And you're doing well.
I mean, look behind you.
Look at that.
That's enough
to get you through.
I'm done.
I'm done.
You're 100 percent sure?
I'm 100 percent sure.
I'm done.
Giovanna: he went down to,
you know,
Soak up the sun
a little bit by the river,
Came back 10 minutes later
and said he was leaving again,
So I think it's
a little absurd
To be leaving now
with less than a week left.
I mean, wes was very vocal
from the start
About how he needs to stay busy
in order to keep his mind calm,
And I think that ultimately
led to his downfall out here.
He should have seen it coming,
because I did.
First night alone.
I just dozed off for a while
And woke up to a familiar
yet unwelcome sound.
Kind of bummed
it's raining again.
I'm kind of bummed
I'm all alone.
So I'm going to eat a lemon.
Wes is my friend and, you know,
we really leaned on each other
And helped each other
And he could just leave
all of a sudden,
I feel totally deserted.
But I'm trying to be
at peace with it.
This challenge still
means something to me
And I'm still really pumped
about the finish.
I'm going to need to just,
you know, reinforce the shelter,
Make it warm and comfortable,
Have enough firewood,
just ride the wave.
The most important thing
for me right now is firewood.
It's incredibly important
to my well-being,
My safety,
especially at night,
Not just to avoid hypothermia,
But also to ward off the pumas
that I know live around here.
Ow. This caterpillar
just touched my ankle
And it hurt really bad.
*Bleep*
You little jerk.
My first
caterpillar bite in life.
It's about to dump buckets.
Wow.
Scared me.
You know,
this cloud forest is crazy.
The weather is constantly
swirling and changing.
A beautiful,
sunshiney day
Just turns into
a thunderstorm in seconds.
But I don't want
to be stuck in here.
Please stop raining.
Narrator: over two weeks ago,
wes and giovanna arrived
In the cloud forest
of maquipucuna, ecuador.
With primitive
survival ratings of 7.3
And 6.2,
the two quickly bonded,
Successfully securing fire,
shelter, and water,
As well as finding
a sustainable source of food.
Cheers.
But wes repeatedly
overexerted himself,
Wearing down his body
and then his mind.
On day 15, he had had enough,
and abruptly tapped out.
I'm done. I'm going.
I can't do it anymore.
Wes' misjudgment of his ability
in the environment
Reduces his psr from a 7.3
to a 5.2.
Giovanna has continued
on her own,
Gathering firewood,
securing her shelter,
And hoping the rains will let up
For her last days
in the cloud forest.
Giovanna's psr
will be reevaluated
If and when she makes it
to the extraction point.
I guess it's because
of the rain,
But last night,
I just couldn't get a fire.
It was so horrible.
And I just woke up,
and I'm already like --
I'm emotional because I'm scared
about tonight and it's morning.
It's just crazy.
And I know how to make a fire.
I've made fires continuously
for 17 nights.
But last night was different.
I just couldn't --
I couldn't get it to work.
It's really frustrating.
I don't know what to do.
I'm just like crouched here
Trying not to sit down
because the ground is so wet.
Everything in my shelter
is drenched.
And my fire's out.
I'm just kind of
struggling right now.
I have no fire.
I have no dry kindling.
I've done the absolute best
I can do, but...
But I damn sure don't want
to leave this close to the end.
Narrator:
as giovanna's ordeal worsens,
The rain intensifies,
pushing the river to its limits.
With the river threatening
to engulf her camp,
Making rescue impossible,
producers must intervene.
Yeah?
Yeah.
With the situation you're in,
The circumstances
on this challenge
Have made it
impossible for us
To let you go on,
And it's a safety issue
for everybody involved.
Narrator: as the floodwaters
continue to rise,
Giovanna is removed
from the challenge
In a forced evacuation.
Giovanna: I really wish that
I were leaving victorious
And not leaving because
circumstances demand it.
Are we going to have to
cross the river on foot?
Okay. Oh, wow.
This is going to be
really dangerous to cross.
Can I be close to you?
Grab the rope!
Yeah.
Oh, my god.
Okay, big rock.
Hold on.
In the end,
nature is not for you,
It's not against you,
it just is,
And there's nothing more
I could have done.
It feels kind of *bleep*
to be leaving like this.
Every day, I gave this challenge
everything that I had.
I am proud of myself, but I feel
like I left my little corner
Of the cloud forest
a little too soon.
When I started this challenge,
I wanted to connect myself
to my hunter-gatherer ancestors,
To connect myself with nature
and with the forest,
And I have, so to
all the haters, get out here,
And I think that you'll
eat your words pretty quick.
Narrator:
over the course of 19 days
in the ecuadorian cloud forest,
Unable to source enough protein
in her diet,
Giovanna lost a total
of 20 pounds.
Successfully putting her
book smarts to practical use,
Giovanna demonstrated grit,
determination,
And the survival skills
of a seasoned pro.
I was wondering if you
might be interested
In having
giant snail for lunch.
Lookie there!
With the attempt cut short,
Her psr remains at a 6.2.
Although giovanna
survived 19 days,
Five without a partner,
The ecuadorian jungle
had the final say,
Driving her out
against her will,
Proving that nature
can't always be tamed
Naked and afraid.
