What the *bleep*?
Got it on camera?
The battery go dead?
I don't think it wants
to be recorded.
Okay.
This is where I quit.
I'm done.
Narrator: one man...
And one woman...
I'm not leaving!
...alone for 21 days...
What is that?
...with no food...
Oh, god, I'm freezing.
...no clothes...
Aah!
...no water...
Aah! Move!
Do they have the skills
and the will...
Hurts.
...to overcome the most primal
survival challenge
Of their lives...
...naked and afraid?
Melanie: it's just the unknown
that is scary out here.
Captions paid for by
discovery communications
Narrator: 10 days ago, jeremy --
a louisiana native --
Began his survival
redemption with michelle
In the swamps of louisiana's
atchafalaya basin --
A mass of weed-choked marshes,
riddled with deadly 'gators,
Poisonous snakes,
and filled with a deep,
Dark history of the dims
of voodoo curses
That continues to
haunt the swamps.
Jeremy: what is that?
Narrator: on day 3, the bayou
claimed its first casualty.
I feel bad leaving you.
On his own,
hunger and loneliness
Sunk jeremy
into deep despair.
Man, I'm going nuts out here
by myself.
Maybe the easiest thing
to do is tap out.
Is that my partner?
Narrator: on day 5, with his
redemption quest in jeopardy,
A new partner -- melanie --
came in to begin her challenge.
So, I'm doing 21 starting today
and you're doing 25?
Yeah.
We're in this together.
You're my jungle husband.
I'm your jungle wife.
I got you, boo.
Narrator:
after 5 days together,
They are starving
and desperate for food.
I just hope there's a fish
in there tomorrow.
Jeremy: nothing.
Narrator: mentally and
emotionally spent,
The eerie noises of the swamp
are playing on their minds...
Jeremy:
there's that sound again.
Narrator: ...leading them to
suspect they may not be alone.
What the *bleep*
was that?
Something was just walking
by our camp.
No idea what it is.
It's terrifying now.
Jeremy: it's day 11.
This is k*lling us.
It has been several days since
we had some meat in our bellies.
We're not sleeping much.
Physically, I'm exhausted.
I've never been so worn down
in my life.
Melanie:
last night, I heard something
creeping through the woods.
I don't know what it is.
Maybe it's, you know,
just an animal,
But the noises -- I mean,
I can't describe the noises.
An animal, you know, they don't
really make that kind of noise.
You see a crawfish?
Yeah, he's there.
There's a little crawfish
that's been pestering the crap
Out of us for a few days.
This damn hole's just too deep
to get him out of here.
It's just so freaking...
Thin.
It's so taunting that
He's right there
and we sleep there.
That might be what I heard
'Cause there was something
that ran from around
We were and it
sounded pretty big.
I saw it last night.
Yeah.
*Bleep*
with these bugs.
I'm going out,
trying to find some food,
Check the fish basket
To get a good meal
in our stomach.
I will *bleep*
my invisible pants
If there's a fish
in there.
The pond is very creepy --
You have to always watch
where you're stepping.
There's snakes out there.
Everything blends in.
It's very scary,
And that's probably the most
mentally difficult challenge
Of being out there
is not knowing
What you're either right
on top of or very close to.
Melanie: is there anything
in there?
There's a little one.
Think he might've
fell through.
*Bleep*
Well,
that little son-of-a-g*n.
I'm going to get that sucker.
Narrator: crawfish -- members
of the lobster family --
Thrive in freshwater swamps.
Using five pairs
of armored legs to dig burrows,
They can live in or out of water
For up to 30 years in the wild.
Get the water pot.
Crawfish don't like warm water.
So, hopefully,
pouring warm water
Down there makes him
come out.
He's getting the hell
out of there.
Look at how big he is!
All right.
Think we know how to
get crawfish out of holes.
I think we do.
Yeah.
Nom, nom, nom, nom.
Look at that sucker.
I can't wait to boil
this thing up.
I mean, they taste good,
Puts a little meat
in your belly.
Look at that beautiful crawfish
in there cooking.
Mmm.
Sure is purdy.
It ain't much, but every
little thing's a win out here.
I want to eat
an eyeball.
You ever eat
the eyeball?
They're hard.
They are.
Mm-hmm.
It's delicious.
"Eye" thought
it was delicious.
Melanie: get off of me,
you stupid *bleep*.
Oh, they're *bleep*
eating me now.
Jeremy: this bug is eating
the *bleep* out of me.
Oh, my *bleep*.
Mosquitos,
mosquitos, mosquitos.
I'm dying here, man.
I'm *bleep* dying.
I haven't slept at all
Because these *bleep*
Bugbites are out of control.
I'm getting destroyed.
Today is, by far,
The worst day of bugbites.
Look at that!
Why?
Why are there so many?
Let me show you
my butt cheek.
This thing is insane.
Look at that.
It's a total bummer.
Her battling the mosquitos
Like she does
and the reaction
That her body gets to it --
I mean, it just brings
the morale way down.
Melanie: gah!
I mean,
I need her here with me.
Grr!
Ahh, no mosquito itch.
Melanie: oh, *bleep*.
Oh, my *bleep*.
Get me the hell out of here.
What is that?
I ain't had a decent meal
in two days.
I don't think half of
a crawfish counts
As a good meal.
I need some substance,
and I want to do some foraging,
Make sure we get
something to eat today.
Big pot of greens --
that'll do it.
These right here,
ground nettles,
Is an herb
that grows wild here.
It's like the potato
of the plant.
They're a good source
of food --
Iron, vitamins a and c.
Being we haven't
ate nothing today.
To dig them out?
Mm-hmm.
They in there deep?
No, they ain't too bad.
Such a manly provider.
Melanie: jeremy is like having
an encyclopedia
For identifying
everything out here.
Everything out here
is an option to eat.
Jeremy:
I almost got sick.
It didn't really agree
with my stomach.
Oh, *bleep*.
I think I'm at where you're at.
We've had so few calories,
The last thing
we could afford
Is to throw up.
Today's my day 13.
In the philippines,
that's the day that me and cass
Decided to leave the island.
In the philippines, it was
definitely a rough experience.
This right here
it's just pure hell.
It's some of the worst
living conditions
You can be in right now.
But we're 13 days into it.
I'm going to go
till I can't go no more.
I mean, I don't want to give up.
If we can just get this bed
right, we can sleep all night.
Machete is dull.
Big time.
Melanie: I'm not a cranky person
unless I don't sleep,
And right now I'm very
*bleep* cranky.
We're freezing at night,
We're being eaten alive by bugs,
There's strange noises
just scaring the
*Bleep* out of us.
And we constantly have to be
doing something just to survive.
Jeremy:
I had this grand idea that I was
going to eat me a fish today.
I could taste that sucker.
So, basically, I'm making me
a fishing line out of vines
And grass and stuff,
Used a thorn as a gorge hook,
Put me a grub on it,
So we hope our fish come up
and bite it, swallow it,
And that'll turn sideways
in its throat.
And we have a fish.
That's the theory.
Those fish, all food is bait.
You got to bait fish
that swim along the shore,
And then bigger fish
come in and feed on it.
God *bleep*.
It was a gar,
And gar have razor-sharp teeth
And if he chomp down
right there on cordage,
It'll snap it.
Man, that would've
made our day right there.
Melanie: this thing is
so frustrating.
Can't even get
a spark anymore.
Jeremy: mel noticed today
the firestarter's not working.
And I think it's starting
to lose that spark,
And that's got me concerned.
There's a good chance
the firestarter
Might just fail altogether.
Give me the machete.
*Bleep* I blew it out.
You can't go into
the night without fire.
I cannot explain how horrible
the insects get at night.
You would not make
it without it.
Melanie: today was a hard blow.
Without the fire,
we can't stay warm,
We can't keep
the mosquitos away,
And we can't cook the food.
Man, one little thing
can just break you down.
Cold weather's coming in.
Fall's starting to set
in here in louisiana --
The temperatures are dropping
into the 50s at night,
You get that cold breeze
coming out of the north --
All that just equals up
To just a recipe
for hypothermia.
It's around 3:00
in the morning.
We've not slept tonight.
I think we've just got
to embrace the fact
That it's not going to happen.
We didn't sleep none
last night.
The wind was blowing,
temps was dropping,
That wind was coming
off the river --
It was cold.
Definitely got to get
a fire going.
I had it a second ago.
I'm going to go get
some twigs over
In that little dry spot
I like getting from, all right?
This is about what
I was afraid of --
Damn firestarter's about out.
This is not a joke.
You can't survive
without fire.
Come on, pyro master.
Stings the eyes.
Oh, my god.
Yes!
Whoo!
Oh, my god, yes.
Yes. Whoo.
I am so proud of you.
I'm proud of us.
I'm proud of us, too,
'cause that was amazing.
So, it is about 3:30
in the morning,
And jeremy and I
are taking shifts
Keeping the embers
burning in the fire
And our firestarter's
pretty much out.
That's why we got --
Why we got to keep it
burning...
All night,
and then during the day,
Collect more firewood
to keep it burning all day.
Not easy.
But we have to do it.
It's a lot to do,
so little energy.
Trying to find firewood.
We're stockpiling,
trying to make sure
That we have enough
to get through the night.
It hit me like
a brick wall.
Like, my body just realizing
it's not getting anything.
I consider myself
to be a tough person,
And this is kicking
The *bleep* out of me.
Jeremy: mel has me concerned
about things.
I've lost one partner out here.
I don't want to lose this one.
I really don't want to spend
The next several days out here
doing this all by myself.
I think we just need
a good night's sleep.
I mean, we just need to feel
rested for a change.
I mean, we've gotten
very little sleep
Since we've started
this challenge.
There's no such thing
as an easy day out here.
And we can't sleep
at night.
To me, nights have
always been the worst.
Everything works
against you.
I still don't have
any intent of giving up.
It's just...
I don't know what to do
to get around here.
Need a good meal.
I'm going to go hunting.
I'll try to come back
with the biggest meal yet.
Okey-doke.
I'm a hunter --
I mean, I hunt for food.
Up here on high ground,
I'm not seeing much to eat.
I've got to last 25 days
out here,
Longer than anyone's
gone before.
I don't want to fail
like I did in the philippines.
I don't want my body
just hitting zero
And that's it, you know,
And get forced-pulled
out of this thing.
It is so easy
to run out of energy.
I'm just worried that
I'm burning more calories
Than I'm intaking.
I didn't want to come out here
and just slowly die.
Holy...
Standard snare wire.
I found a snare wire
that's been broken.
It's not in perfect shape,
I'm not going to be able
to go for big game.
We definitely going to use this.
Any good news?
It was not
a wasteful hunt.
-What?
-Had a snare wire right there.
-Really?
-Yep.
That'll hold hogs,
c*ons, stuff like that.
I'm ecstatic.
I'm so energized.
That's awesome.
There's a huge find.
I'm just super excited to see
what we can get with that snare.
If it's a pig...
I don't want to get my hopes up,
but they're up.
Good luck.
Same to you, amigo.
The snare wire is
such a huge gateway
To more food out here.
Snaring is something
I'm actually good at
And I know I can do it --
I do it all the time back home.
Whew.
That'll get you.
Look at that sucker.
So, I'm waiting
for something small
'Cause the snare
wire's broke on one end.
That'll increase my odds
of it not coming undone
And we lose the snare
wire altogether.
There's a co*n trail.
Narrator: to trap animals
using a snare wire,
One end of a steel cable
is attached
To a fixed object
And a slip loop is created
with the other end.
When the animal gets caught
in it, the loop tightens.
Jeremy: I got some persimmons --
they're not ripe --
But c*ons are eating on them.
I'm seeing it in their scat.
I know when I was coming in,
I saw the seeds
In some of their scat on day 1,
So I knew it had to be
some permissions around here.
Luckily, we found the tree.
I wish they'd be ripe
'Cause that would be
a great food source.
But, I mean, they're not
so I can still utilize them.
So, I can use persimmons to kind
of bait them in a little bit,
Get them to go
through the snare wire.
Trying to get them to find
a walk right through here
About the same way
we do hogs and stuff.
I just hope it works.
Oh, *bleep*.
I hate noises and not
knowing what they are,
And keeping the fire lit,
It's wearing me down.
Snare didn't catch nothing.
It's a good game
trail right here.
They're walking right there.
Got some hogs -- several hogs.
It is an active trail.
You know, I kind of like
the way it funnels them,
So they're automatically going
to walk right through here.
I like to catch a little hog.
I'd like to try.
Melanie: jeremy,
what the hell was that?
Jeremy,
what was that?
*Bleep* that's
*bleep* weird.
I see something.
Jeremy.
It looks like a white
*bleep* face.
I swear to god.
It's next to the tree.
Oh, my god,
that is a face.
Melanie:
jeremy, what was that?
See,
that's *bleep* weird.
See something?
Jeremy.
It looks like a white
*bleep* face.
I swear to god.
It's next to the tree.
Oh, my god,
that is a face.
Yes.
It's standing right
over here.
Look, right there.
*Bleep*. Yeah, it's just --
it's sitting there.
It looks like...
Did my camera
just turn off?
Your camera went out?
Yeah.
Turn it back on.
I can't.
It's on.
It's in the "on"
position.
Battery go dead?
No,
it was a full battery.
I don't think it wanted
to be recorded.
Yeah, well, that *bleep*
is weird.
Okay.
It won't go back on.
This is where I quit.
Jeremy, why is this
happening right now?
And I say, "good night."
Look, it won't
come on at all.
Oh, my god,
that's so weird.
All right,
I'm done with this.
I'm done.
I'm done, y'all.
Good night.
Last night was rough.
I mean, it was rough.
It was rough on both of us.
We're so tired
and sleep-deprived.
I don't know if this is messing
with our minds or what.
Melanie: at night,
everything is terrifying.
You know, unexplained noises
we hear and that face.
We were looking at it
and it was staring right at us.
Narrator:
lack of sleep can decrease
our production of endorphins,
Also known as
the "happy chemicals"
Of the human body.
Lower endorphin levels
and sleep deprivation
Can cause paranoid thoughts
and hallucinations.
Melanie: just the --
the experience of it
Is what hit me the hardest.
To have to see that
and hear that.
There's a lot of dark
history in this area.
Maybe it has something
that has to do with that.
Maybe it's just an animal.
It's just the unknown factor
that is so scary out here.
You could say it
may have scarred me.
I'm going to sit down
for a minute.
Okay.
Feeling all right?
Just got
light-headed again.
Nap it up.
I mean, physically
and mentally, I'm just burnt.
Feel like
I'm letting you down.
Why do you feel like
you're letting me down?
'Cause I ain't
getting much done.
Jeremy's a hunter.
He's used to providing,
You know --
big game, too.
If he's not bringing it home,
then he thinks he's failing.
I'm going to go
check the snare.
I don't understand why
he wants to go back out.
He needs to rest.
He feels nauseous so frequently.
If he puts out any more energy
that he doesn't have,
He's going to start
throwing up.
Nada.
Well, either something
bumped it or we had something.
Looked like a hog or something
come through the trail.
You know, I was aiming
for something small.
This one right here is fresh.
Try again tonight.
You all right?
I'm just down right now.
I don't know, mel.
If could just snare one pig...
Hey, man.
Don't get discouraged.
*Bleep* crazy.
I know you really
want the big game.
I tapped out in the philippines
'cause we couldn't find water.
Out here, we ain't
got enough food.
I think you expect too much
of yourself sometimes.
Melanie: I know jeremy really
wants to get food,
But he's been out there today,
And he just gets more
and more frustrated.
You know, I just
wanted it so bad.
If I could get one good catch,
we might...
You know, I'm used to over
2,000 calories a day.
Always said if I get
my redemption,
It's going to be the probably
the worst damn spot
There ever was.
Sorry. I broke down
a little bit there.
How many times
have I cried already?
I hope that he can stick
in there.
It's just that I don't know
his internal,
Mental capabilities and limits
'Cause he has less days
than I do.
I have four more days
than he does.
I don't think it's possible
To survive out here
at this time of year alone.
You need each other
to keep warm.
So, if he were to tap out,
I think I would tap out
'cause physically,
I don't think it's possible
without one another.
Jeremy:
really hit a low yesterday.
What makes me nervous
is that it gets to a point
Where your body can't go,
you can't go.
I'm going to go check the snare.
And I got snare set still.
What we need right now
is just a good meal.
Now, I came here
to get at least my 21.
The end is in sight.
You know, my 21 days
is fixed to be here.
And then mel might have
to spend four nights by herself.
I've just been
trying too hard --
Pushing myself
and pushing myself.
It's just -- I'm going to end up
failing if I keep that up.
You know, and I think
I need to just settle down
And, you know,
just let things come my way.
Narrator: attempting to survive
in the louisiana swamps
Has had a profound
psychological effect
On both jeremy and melanie.
Starting with a psr of 7.2,
Melanie has been haunted
by strange sights and sounds,
And has struggle to cope
with the hardships
Of the bug-infested bayou.
I haven't slept at all
Because these bugbites
are out of control.
Narrator: beginning
with a psr of 6.1,
Jeremy's failure
to secure food for the team
Has jeopardized his quest
for redemption.
You know, I just
wanted this so bad.
Narrator: with one day remaining
in jeremy's 21 day challenge,
A recent discovery
could affect whether
Or not he will
stay with melanie
Until her challenge
is complete.
I got something in the snare.
Jeremy: what the hell...
My god.
I'm extremely grateful for this.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I normally go after
the full-sized ones.
I don't go after
these small ones.
At the same time,
I'm a hunter --
I hunt for food.
That's what I do.
Mel!
What the hell is that?
It's a deer.
You are lying
to me right now.
No!
You caught that
in the snare?
Yeah.
Oh, my god.
That was in the snare?
I'm so happy.
Melanie: I'm not a hunter,
And it's very difficult
for me to k*ll something.
Being out here, you have
to rely on everything
That's available to you.
That deer lost its life
so we could survive.
We recognize the huge sacrifice
That was made so that
we could continue.
I'm just grateful
that we have that deer.
My heart's, like,
beating a mile a minute.
I know. I'm hungry.
Oh, *bleep*.
Oh, my god.
Oh, my goodness.
It, like, melts
in your mouth.
There was just
one thing in me --
That I just wanted
to complete --
And that was able
to just snare an animal.
And then, finally, we did.
So needed this.
Tomorrow's your 21.
Yep.
You want to be leaving?
No, I don't want
to be leaving.
No, I want to be
here with you.
When I come into this,
It was about a 21-day
challenge --
That was it.
And now it look like
I'm going a 25-day challenge.
We're here in the moment,
and we're enjoying it,
So -- to the best
we can enjoy it.
For better, for worse.
Better, for worse.
My jungle husband.
You're my jungle wife.
Melanie: the deer --
it was a doe,
And it has enough meat
to feed us
For the next five days
Until we get out of here.
Man, we got some deer jerky.
That's what we've been
snacking on.
Pretty good, too.
Melanie: I know we still have
one day left,
But I just want to say
thank you to the land
That's allowed us to enjoy
every experience that we have.
It's gorgeous.
Day 25.
Day 21!
We are fixing to go home!
Whoo!
Just pull out that map.
See what we've got.
Take a gander.
I have never
been past this.
It's the end
of the pond?
Yeah.
This is all
unknown territory to me.
I don't know what we're
going to be getting into.
I really don't want
to get hurt on the way out.
Slow and steady and safe.
Let's begin
this journey.
Melanie: we know, like,
where we're going,
But we don't exactly know
Everything that
we're going to encounter.
Woof, them mosquitos
are out today, man.
We're going to get more of 'em
as it warms up.
Yep.
Just watch for snakes
in case I miss any.
Yeah.
Jeremy: my biggest concern
are the snakes.
We're close to the river.
Swamp's on the other side of it,
So we're right
in the middle of everything.
Stuff travels from
the river to the swamp.
Remember my thing
about logs.
Yeah -- watch
underneath and stuff.
Always feel like
one could be hiding.
Yep.
Oh, I found a thorn.
Oh, god.
*Bleep* is it
in your foot?
Let me see.
Keep going.
That's not too bad.
A plane?
Is that for us?
There it is!
Hey!
Down here!
That's for us.
We can't miss our ride.
Aah! It's cold!
Come on!
Hey!
Hey!
Hey!
Whoo!
Over here!
Whoo!
Yeah!
We're here!
Whoo!
Whoo!
Whoo!
Heck yeah.
Oh, god.
Melanie: I came out here,
I guess, to test myself --
To see what I'm made of,
what I'm capable of.
I absolutely got
the validation --
I am the person
I thought I was.
Maybe even a little better.
Yo, that was huge.
Whoo!
Ha-ha!
This challenge
is probably one of
The most significant things
I've achieved in my entire life.
I willingly put myself
through discomfort and fear,
And I know how much
this meant to him as well,
So it was very important for me
To complete it for both of us.
Jeremy: even though I live
here in this state.
I knew it wasn't
going to be easy.
But we found our way through it,
And I'm walking out of here
king of the swamp.
Narrator: making it out
of the louisiana bayou
Came with a great physical
And mental cost
to melanie and jeremy.
During her harrowing 21 days,
Melanie lost a total
of 21 pounds.
And after a record-25 days,
Jeremy leaves 32 pounds lighter
Than when he began.
The team survived the swamps,
Overcame personal fears,
Braved mysterious
night visitors.
Successfully
achieving his redemption raises
Jeremy's psr from 6.1
to 8.2.
And melanie's final rating
increases to 7.6.
Another chapter in the legend
of the louisiana bayou.
And they did it
"naked and afraid."
