Kaila:
I hate spiders.
We're in, like,
banana spider territory here.
David:
yes, we are.
Banana spider is,
I'm pretty sure,
The deadliest spider
in the world.
We don't like it here,
and we're not sleeping.
Kaila: I noticed
so many huge spiders.
Super poisonous.
Within four hours,
you're dead.
Well, I've actually heard
it was more like 10 minutes.
Oh!
What the *bleep*
was that?
Damn it!
Oh, it better not be
a banana spider.
Narrator: one man...
Narrator:
and one woman...
I'm not leaving!
Narrator:
...alone for 21 days...
What is that?
...with no food.
Oh, god.
I'm freezing.
Narrator: ...no clothes...
Narrator: ...no water.
God! Oh!
Narrator: do they have
the skills and the will...
Hurts.
Narrator:
...to overcome the most primal
Survival challenge
of their lives?
David:
ugh! Sucks.
Captions paid for by
discovery communications
Narrator:
quebrada valencia lies deep
In the northern
colombian jungle.
Hidden far below its dense
canopy is a mountain river
That snakes through
A steep-sided
jagged limestone gorge,
Accessible only on foot
or horseback.
This will be
the survivalists' home.
They will share this
landlocked prison with jaguars,
Bloodsucking ticks,
And the world's
most venomous spider,
The banana,
or wandering, spider.
It's highly aggressive,
And its fangs inject
a lethal neurotoxin
Causing paralysis
and asphyxiation.
This is the greatest!
Oh, I do love
a good adventure.
I'm david.
My hometown is denver.
I'm a professional yoga teacher
and wilderness guide.
I'm an adventurer. I'm a seeker.
Well, there's definitely some
thick foliage going on here,
But a lot
of useful plants around.
My father says that compared
to the rest of the world,
I march to the beat
of a different drummer.
In fact, he says
I march to the song
Of a whole different band.
He's the first one to really
share the wilderness with me
And recognize
that I had an aptitude.
I'm an expert
at primitive fire-starting.
I've made over a thousand
bow-drilled fires
And over a hundred
hand-drilled fires.
Four years ago, my father
was in a cycling accident
That left him a quadriplegic,
and I went off the deep end.
I dealt with depression,
And I stumbled
into this yoga studio,
Which changed my life.
This is a spiritual journey
for me,
And my goal is
to learn about myself.
Narrator:
david's in great physical shape,
Thanks to years
of yoga practice.
But it's his experience
as a wilderness guide
That he hopes will pay off
in the colombian jungle.
David starts with
a primitive survival rating,
Or psr, of 7.5.
David: am I going to be able
to make it 21 days?
I can make it a lot longer
than that.
I'm really excited.
Definitely
a little nervous, though.
I know there's a bunch
of little things out here
That can k*ll me.
Hi. I'm kaila.
I'm a custom knifemaker
from troy, new hampshire,
And I'm single.
I think that women can do
just as much as men can,
And I don't like
having help from anybody.
I like doing things on my own.
I'm doing this challenge
for my daughter.
I have an 8-year-old,
And I really want
to just make her proud
And show her
that if you set your mind
To anything,
you can accomplish it.
We are extremely high up.
I've been doing
survival training
For the last
couple of years now.
When I was a young girl,
my dad used to take me
Out hunting all the time
and fishing and camping,
So I really got
all of my survival skills
And stuff from my dad.
Narrator: thanks to
her father's training,
Kaila is well-versed in hunting,
Trapping,
and surviving the elements,
But the fact that she has
never left her homeland before
Means that she's in for a shock
when she arrives in the jungle.
Kaila's initial psr
is set at 6.4.
All right. Let's do this.
I have no problem being naked.
If I could be naked
all the time
And it was socially acceptable,
I would.
I don't think that its an issue.
It's much cooler now.
My greatest fear
about this challenge
Is not getting along
with my partner.
At the end of the day,
It's hard for me
to open up to people.
But, I mean, we know
that we have to make this work.
I've been really practicing
trying to be mindful,
Be very present, and here I am.
Now that I'm actually naked
and in the jungle,
My mind is just going wild.
This is a beast.
Hi!
How you doing?
Good, how are you?
Doing good.
Kaila.
David.
Nice to finally meet you.
Pleasure to meet you, kaila.
Yeah.
This feels a little...
Garden of eden-ish.
Right?
I like that.
Hopefully we won't be called
upon to populate the earth.
Oh, I don't know
about that.
No?
That would be strange.
It's a little awkward
being naked, but...
It is, indeed.
...it's not bad, right?
Well, you want
to check out our bags?
Let's check out our bags.
All right.
Narrator:
in addition to a basic pot,
The survivalists
have each brought one item.
I have
a trusty bow-drill set.
Oh, awesome.
And I harvested the sage
a few years ago
When working in the desert
of southern utah,
And it works even when
the wood is moist, is wet.
I have my custom knife
that I made.
No way.
Yeah.
You made that?
I sure did.
Super excited about it.
Holy badass-ery.
We have a map.
A map!
So...
Yes, awesome.
All right.
Let's take
a looky-loo.
We're somewhere
on this river area,
And this
looks mountainy...
Yup.
...to me.
But looks like we got
some nice watering holes here,
So let's roll
this direction.
So where you from?
I am from new hampshire.
Oh, east coast girl, huh?
Yeah. How about you?
I live in denver.
I've traveled a lot,
And I lived in the amazon
as a peace corp volunteer.
So I was there
for a little over two years.
I've never actually been
out of the united states
Before, so...
Shut up!
Yeah,
it's crazy, huh?
Good for you!
David:
let's hear it for kaila.
Very excited
to be working with her,
Super excited,
great attitude,
Going to be a lot of fun.
Are you going to
serenade me on this trip?
Yep!
Ah! *Bleep*
You all right?
Yep.
That's one of those
little frogs.
The natives
would use its poison
As to poison the darts.
Darts?
Yeah.
Excuse me, buddy,
got to go around you.
Looking like
the only way
We're going to get through
is in the water.
You want to jump in,
or...?
Well, if that's
how we got to go.
I mean, it's pretty high up,
but, yeah.
Go through it.
We can just swim through,
Go right through there,
and head down.
Good.
All right.
One, two, three!
Whoo!
Yip-yaw!
Whoo! Whoo!
I was really nervous at first,
meeting my partner.
I think he might be
a little weird,
But we seemed
to hit it off really well
And we're getting along great.
Okay.
Oh, wait,
whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
There's a spider right there.
Whoo!
Yeah, there.
Where -- oh!
*Bleep*
Good looking out.
Whoo!
I'm not too keen on spiders,
especially big, gnarly spiders
That can seriously,
seriously injure you,
And there's going to be
a lot of those.
Stay far away
from the spiders.
There we go.
Good teamwork.
Yep.
Thank you.
Whoa.
This is a definite spot
with potential.
It's rather idyllic,
in fact.
This would be
a good spot.
So I'm thinking
we have this rock
Be one side
of our platform.
We run a beam next to this tree
to the other side.
Yep.
That feels pretty solid.
Kaila:
we're trying to build a platform
To get off the ground
'cause there's so many bugs,
Spiders and stuff,
as well as snakes,
Tons of little things
that can bite you,
And we want to make sure
that they don't.
So getting off the ground
is definitely important.
Whoa,
there's a scorpion right there!
I almost stepped on it,
look at it,
Because he was walking
right down the trail.
Where?
Hold on.
Here, lookit.
He is pissed.
Oh, he's big too.
Yeah,
that's a big one.
Ooh.
Ooh.
David: the bottom line is
the longer we're out here,
The more we're becoming aware
of the danger
In simply walking in leaves.
If you're thirsty, I can start
trying to mosey up a fire.
That actually
would be awesome.
That's going to be a functional,
functioning tinder bundle.
I have faith in you...
Oh, I appreciate that.
...that you
can do it.
The friction created
Creates this black dust,
which is called punk.
And the black dust gets filtered
into the notch and oxygenated.
And when the black dust heats
to a temperature of 600
To 800 degrees fahrenheit,
It then ignites
into a solid coal.
The coal gets transfered
into the bird's nest.
The bird's nest
gets blown to flame,
And you make fire.
Fire!
And that, boys and girls,
is how we make fire.
Water's on the boil.
Awesome knife.
Right?
Ready?
David:
there we go.
Is that good?
Yeah.
We should probably
sleep by the fire tonight
Since we're not
going to have that done.
Who says we're not
going to have this done?
I mean...
So realistically,
We're spending the night
without a shelter.
David:
I'm feeling like our pace
Is a lot slower
than I want it to be.
Hopefully,
we won't live to regret
Not pushing the pace
a little bit faster.
Kaila:
so we woke up
Because we heard an animal
coming down the hill.
Ah!
Oh, my god!
Kaila:
so we woke up
Because we heard an animal
coming down the hill.
Ah!
Day 2.
Last night,
I didn't really get much sleep.
My body took a little beating
from all the rocks.
David: some animal was cruising
around our camp
In the middle of the night,
And it's really hard to tell
how big something is.
So because of that,
b*llet points for today
Are shelter, shelter, shelter,
collect firewood, and shelter.
Kaila:
looks good.
Let's assume the position.
Perfect.
Oh, this is so nice.
That's way better.
Yes.
That is way better,
even without any bedding.
We're going to be
building a fire
Against a large rock wall
Under our six-foot
elevated mansion,
Which is always great to do
In this kind of
jungle-ish environment.
Because last night
got cold enough
To be uncomfortable cold,
So I kept asking kaila
if she wanted to cuddle
For some body heat,
but she wasn't interested.
Kaila: I understand that
this is a survival situation.
I feel super uncomfortable
cuddling a strange man
That I don't know
anything about.
I would rather be cold.
Well, the smoke
is getting to me.
Yeah,
it is really smoky.
We're in our awesome shelter
on the platform.
Tomorrow,
we're going to finish it.
My goal is to sleep
all night long...
Let's see if that happens.
...sleep until the sunrise.
Wouldn't that be nice?
Yes. That would be amazing.
I'm so tired.
I'm sure you are, too.
It's so cold.
Our shelter is cold.
Yeah.
I've been
in survival situations
Where we had to cuddle
with each other
Just to make it
through the night.
I'm not really
all about spooning.
All right. I think I'm going to
go rebuild the fire...
...turn on
our heater again.
You all right?
David: being on
this elevated platform is cold,
And we have
a down-canyon breeze.
And I am curious
why she doesn't like to cuddle,
And I just don't want
to jump into trying to pry
For that kind of information.
But this is survival, man.
David just found
a tick on him.
The ticks
are out of control.
I've got an infected
tick bite in my leg --
Not only my leg,
but my p*nis.
And I haven't had
one single tick on me
This whole entire time.
So, uh, for plans,
goals for today...
Yeah.
We need to finish the a-frame.
Well, the fronds...
Will be some roof.
Floorboard.
Make sure you're stepping
on the support beams there.
Okay.
Please, don't --
please, step on the beams.
I'm really concerned
about those breaking.
You want me
to step on them right here?
The beams mean, like,
the support beams.
Yeah, I know
what the beams are.
I'm trying to --
yeah.
I obviously can't step on
that one, so I'm saying,
Do you want me
to step on the edge here?
Yeah.
Okay.
I would like to not fall off,
so that's all.
Dude, I keep getting *bleep*
in my eye.
I know.
This sucks.
This is just trash.
This is just all
*bleep* up together.
What's wrong?
It's just
a whole bunch of *bleep*
I think
we're getting there.
Kaila: what's up,
you all right?
Sure.
Just frustrated?
Yep.
Something I do?
I don't really want
to talk about it right now.
We are getting ready for bed.
I actually think
I'm going to sleep
On the ground tonight,
underneath our shelter...
Because the last few nights
have been so cold,
So I don't mind
sleeping on the rocks tonight.
This is the first time
that I'm really feeling
That we're not
working as a team.
I assumed that you were
going to sleep down here
With me, as well.
Look.
I can move this
up here,
And we can both
lay this way.
I can move this back.
It's not --
Well,
I'll tell you what, though.
I want to see.
So that we're
both laying this way.
Right, so then one of us
isn't next to the fire.
Yeah, I'll sleep
further away from the fire.
You'll be so cold.
That's what I did day 1.
That's what I did day 1,
and I was fine with it.
No, you hated it!
Yeah, it was uncomfortable,
But I was thinking about you
before myself.
I put you
before myself.
Any time
I have water,
I make sure
that you get the last sip.
Like, I'm always
thinking of you,
So for you to say
that I'm selfish or anything
Just blows my mind
Because I've been
thinking of you since day 1.
We both can sleep
down here together.
I would make it possible so that
we could both lay down here.
There's room down here.
We can make it work.
It's not like
it's not possible.
I'm not an a*s*bleep*
All right.
David: last night, I had
something of a spiritual failing
Where I got quite upset,
And it came out
in the form of anger.
And it was really based on fear
of us not being a team.
And that's something
I've been looking at,
In terms of my meditations
in the morning,
But there could be
any slew of reasons
Why someone is comfortable
or not comfortable
With various levels
of physical contact.
So I don't want to push her.
Look at that right there.
Yeah,
that's a pretty ripe mango.
Split this mango with my partner
and...
See if that brings
a smile to her face.
Hey.
Did you find anything?
Yeah.
Mango?
Kaila: I think every time
I open up to somebody,
I always get let down,
And I think have
a really big wall put up.
But at the end of the day,
we know that we have to
Make this work
and get along with each other.
Ooh!
Thank you!
Oh, that's amazing.
I love you
so much right now.
David:
it's in my nature
When I start to get
frustrated is
I seek to blame
someone who's around me.
But, you know,
that's one of those things
That I'm trying to improve.
That's amazing.
Kaila: oh, I just saw
some eyes.
David: over here?
Yeah, here.
I can't see it.
It won't focus.
But it's right next to
that tree, to the left of it.
Right there?
Oh *bleep*
What is it?
I don't know.
It looked like a very,
very large rat.
Well...
Well, it's probably gone,
whatever it was.
It's okay.
I think it's worth setting up.
We haven't found much protein.
We found, although, some carbs,
and that keeps us moving.
But it'd be really nice
to bring in some meat.
I think that would give
kaila and I a lot of strength.
A little bit of meat
on the table.
It'll be
a good thing.
Kaila: opossum stew
or squirrel stew.
Did you hear that?
Nuh-unh.
You didn't hear that?
No, what?
Something just came
crashing down over there.
It was right there
where we set up the trap.
This is kind of
where we want to go.
It's just that way.
All right.
Well, I think
we just about made it.
And there's nothing.
Ugh, that sucks.
You want me
to carry that?
Carry what?
The pot?
Up to you.
Narrator: 10 days
into their challenge,
David and kaila
still haven't had any protein.
Their traps are falling short,
and the weaker they become,
The harder it is to muster up
the energy to hunt.
Oh, hey!
There's a snake.
David: on it.
Yeah, do it.
'Cause if he's hiding in that,
he's got to come out.
Yeah!
Good hit!
Yeah!
Oh, that did it!
That looks like
a whipsnake.
Tore him up.
Where?
Oh, my god.
That's insane.
Wow.
Yeah!
That's going to be great.
Yeah.
Oh, here comes the intestines.
Mmm.
David: how do you plan on
cooking that snake?
I'm going to kebab it
over the fire.
Snake kebab?
Snake kebab.
Mmm.
That's really good.
Mmm.
You okay?
Feel nauseous?
Yeah.
Walk away
from the bed, please.
Oh, my god.
I don't want to go over there.
Sucks.
David: feel nauseous?
Yeah.
Oh, my god.
Walk away
from the bed, please.
Oh *bleep* this.
Kaila:
I got wicked sick last night.
Just all of a sudden,
I was laying down,
And I just got really nauseous
And couldn't stop puking
for like 30 minutes.
It was pretty bad.
Sweet.
How are you feeling?
Feel a lot better
than I did last night.
David:
I didn't sleep much last night.
Apparently, snake does not
agree much with kaila --
Vomiting and diarrhea.
Thanks for looking out
for me last night.
Yeah.
You're not so bad.
Oh, my pleasure.
Kaila: the bugs are having
a field day on all of my wounds.
David:
look at this bad boy.
Narrator:
kaila and david have had
only very limited protein,
So their bodies are struggling
to heal and fight off infection.
By day 13, david's tick bite
has become badly infected.
A medic has been called in
to clean the wound.
Without treatment,
david risks developing sepsis,
A life-threatening condition
Where bacteria
poisons the blood supply.
David: oh!
Wow.
God,
there's so much.
Let's get all
the rest of that out there.
That was terrible.
Oh, there's more,
yeah.
Oh, my god!
Ow.
Oh, it's way deep.
David: it's a challenge
to keep this clean,
Not only from water,
but just all the dirt,
And so, I think
it's a real strong possibility
That it could get re-infected
And I may have to go through
all this again.
Narrator:
over the next four days,
Kaila and david
hunker down at camp
Consuming wild edibles
and trying to heal their wounds.
They need to conserve
their energy
Before they set out
for their grueling extraction.
Being out here now
for 2 1/2 weeks
And...
Missing the people back home,
Not being able
to just touch base
And say anything and tell them
I love them is challenging.
And to deal with this leg wound
and the starvation
And the sleepless nights
on top of it.
It's just been a challenge.
Kaila:
I miss my daughter,
And I miss
my mom and dad a lot, too.
Right now, I'm definitely
missing them like crazy,
And I am counting down the days.
David and I woke up,
and we went and did some yoga.
I've personally
never done it before,
But he invited me
to do it with him.
And we've had a lot of time
out here by ourselves
To talk and really open up
to each other,
And I don't really open up
to people in general.
I think
there's definitely a possibility
That I'll be more willing
to open up
To people after this experience.
So this is all the stuff
we need to take.
Yep.
David:
tomorrow is extraction day,
But because we're hiking
out of a 5,000-acre jungle,
We're starting today, on day 20.
And the leg's been kind of
a minor nuisance all the time,
So hopefully it wont slow me up
or hinder me on extraction.
I think after
we get past this point,
It's going to be
pretty flat.
Narrator:
david and kaila's first obstacle
Is the steep cliff face
of quebrada valencia,
A rocky waterfall
That will bring them
to the jungle floor.
If they make it to the bottom,
They'll set up camp
for the night
And on the final day,
avoiding the many caiman,
Raft five miles
down the magdalena river
To their extraction point.
These rocks
are so sketchy.
Yeah, they are.
They're slippery.
One slip, and we're going down
a long dun-dun dun-dun.
Yeah, exactly.
Ouch.
The long hike
to the jungle floor
Is steep, jagged, and slippery,
And david and kaila's
physical coordination
Has been drastically impaired
by 20 days of hunger.
Concentration is critical.
This is amazing.
Look back.
Look what we came down.
Holy crap.
That's insane.
Oh, look, bananas!
I'm kind of nervous
About running into
some banana spiders.
Yeah, I would love to know
how many banana spiders
Are in here right now.
The wandering spiders
of colombia,
Known also as banana spiders,
Walk the jungle floor at night
looking for prey.
They're fast, and the venom
Can not only asphyxiate
their victims,
It can cause loss of
muscle control and paralysis.
I think
I see the river.
Yeah?
It doesn't look like
we can go any further on foot.
Look's like we're taking
to the water at this point.
All right, kaila,
what should we do first?
What's our priority?
So obviously,
getting the raft done
Is top priority,
I think.
Do you want to start
cutting down some banana trees?
Yep.
It was quite a long walk.
We found a camp that we're
going to settle out for tonight
And start building our raft
And then tomorrow morning
head out.
We decided to use
some banana trees
Because they actually float
a lot better than bamboo,
And then we're going to just tie
a bunch of rope together
And tie them off.
I think keeping it simple
is really the best way to go.
We should be done.
Then we get to relax
on our last night here.
I know.
Our last night. Aww.
Oh.
With all
the banana spiders.
Banana spiders!
Yay!
David: we wanted to put some
time into prepping our camp,
Especially with the
banana spiders in the area.
We really want
to clear the ground.
Hey, there's a baby tarantula
over here.
Oh, it better not be
a *bleep* banana spider.
There he is.
That is a banana spider.
Yeah, I feel like
he's really fast.
Not that fast! Oh.
Maybe that fast.
Not that fast.
You get him?
I don't know.
I got something.
We don't like it here,
and we're not sleeping.
Kaila: I noticed
so many huge spiders.
Super poisonous spiders.
They're everywhere.
Oh!
What the *bleep*
was that?
Damn it.
Oh *bleep* that's...
Narrator:
David and kaila were dropped
into quebrada valencia,
A 5,000-acre jungle
in northern colombia,
With primitive survival ratings
of 7.5 and 6.4.
Despite some initial clashing,
the two were able
To come together
as a highly effective team.
Yeah!
That's going to be great.
David suffered
with an infected tick bite...
...and kaila eventually
recovered from a bad reaction
To snake meat.
Now the team is halfway through
an arduous two-day extraction.
If they can make it
to their rescue point,
Their psrs will be reevaluated.
Oh, damn it!
Oh!
What the *bleep*
was that?
*Bleep*
are you okay?
Damn it. Oh.
Something that just
*bleep* took me out.
That's what just
hit you in the face.
That just
came out of nowhere.
Oh!
Oh, that's hard, too.
Yeah.
Wasn't expecting that.
David: it feels like someone
just came out of nowhere
And punched me right in the eye.
It hit you
right in the eye?
Yeah.
Terrible.
Today is extraction day!
Putting the warrior paint on.
Whoo-hoo!
One, two, three.
Lift up,
lift, lift, lift.
This is
going to be challenging.
This is going to be challenging.
Yeah.
There we go.
Oh, boy.
David: when I think about it,
I'm a little bit nervous.
We are still
in the middle of nowhere,
And our raft is so sketchy.
Paddling through the swamp,
Submerged caiman
protecting their young.
You got to still be on guard
Because this game
isn't over yet.
Kaila: there are so many things
that can k*ll you out here,
And it's very, very dangerous.
So I think it's important
not to freak out or anything
Because it's just going to make
the situation worse.
There are so many water spiders
on my open wounds.
I can smell the ocean.
David: I smell freedom.
Whoo-hoo!
We got this.
Oh, my goodness.
And we made it!
Ah! We did it!
Whoo-hoo!
There's the beach!
Yes!
Whoo!
We did it!
I survived in the colombian
jungle naked for 21 days
And definitely suffer.
Whoo-hoo!
And I learned so much
about myself.
I'll try to, when I leave here,
Have a little more faith
in people
And let those walls down
a little bit.
I'm just so happy.
This has been
an incredible experience.
I'll have tons of memories
to share with my daughter.
This is definitely
life-changing.
David:
I came in trying to make this
An experience of growth
and personal development.
Ah!
And I've really got
A whole new level of gratitude
And appreciation
in the wilderness
And how important it is
to my healing and my health...
We're over here!
...and I'm so happy
to be completed and done.
Let's get out of here!
Ready?
My dad -- he can't walk anymore,
But right up to the time
of his injury,
We were still climbing mountains
and going backpacking.
I think he's just
really proud of me,
And I'm proud of him.
This experience was brutal,
But we not only survived,
we rocked.
Yay!
Yeah!
Whoo-hoo!
Yeah!
Whoo-hoo!
Narrator: over the course
of 21 challenging days
In the colombian jungle,
david consumed enough protein
To keep his energy levels high,
But his near-constant activity
and morning yoga sessions
Still ensured
a 16 pound weight-loss.
After an early fight
about sharing body heat...
...david was able
to control his anger
And work with his partner
extremely well,
Displaying a wide array
Of survival skills
and knowledge.
And that is how we make fire.
Narrator:
as a result, his psr has risen
from a 7.5 to an 8.1.
During her 3 weeks in colombia,
kaila lost a total of 13 pounds.
Although she had never
been to a jungle
Or even
outside the united states,
Kaila proved herself adaptable
to the environment
And a valuable teammate
to her partner.
Yeah!
That's going to be great.
Her psr increases
from a 6.4 to a 7.4.
The ticks and spiders
of colombia
Wanted to take them out.
David:
oh, my god.
But these two survivalists
proved their worth
And lived to tell about it.
"Naked and afraid."
We made it!
Whoo! We did it!
David: one last little gift
from my last night in colombia,
Something bit
or stung me in there.
A little perspective.
But the best thing is --
you ready? You ready?
After two long days
of flying home,
I finally just landed,
And I am heading down
to baggage claim right now
To go see my little girl! Ah!
Kaila:
hi, guys!
Congratulations.
Woman: oh!
I made that
just for you.
