02x01 - Officer X

Post by bunniefuu »

This programme contains
very strong language and scenes
which some viewers may find upsetting

SIREN BLARES

This is Felix Owusu, reporting live.

I am at the Stop Climate Genocide
protest in Brighton

for a profile on SCG's founder,
Marcus Calderwood.

SIREN CONTINUES, LOUD CHATTER

This is a final warning.
Time is running out!

These offices belong to a company

whose cheap ultra-processed food
is destroying the planet.

Stop Climate Genocide!

Who do you think you are,
you selfish prick?!

You're disrupting
people's lives, mate!

Stop Climate Genocide! And as for
you lot, don't just stand there,

you two-tier muppets! Arrest them!
What's wrong with ya?

What about the ambulances,
you block?! Huh?

The lives that you're ruining?
I will not apologise

for the inconvenience caused to
a privileged few!

SHOUTING

What are you nicking me for?
Him! He's the one!

SIREN BLARES

Marcus Calderwood,
activist and author,

is about to be arrested
for the 21st time.

SIREN BLARES

CHANTING: Stop Climate Genocide!
Stop Climate Genocide!

Stop Climate Genocide!
Stop Climate Genocide...

CHANTING AND SIRENS FADE

HORN HONKS

ENGINE REVS UP

HE PANTS

CAR DRIVES AWAY

HE SCREAMS IN PAIN

BIRDSONG

CAR APPROACHES

Marcus? Marcus?

Stay with us, Marcus.
The air ambulance is on its way.

WEAKLY: I know who...
Just stay calm.

SLURRED: I know who did it.

The driver.

It was a police officer.

Goldfinches? Yeah, and there was
practically a flock at one point,

but now they've stopped coming.

And this has increased your anxiety
levels? I know. I know! I know.

But I can't help feeling like
it's something I've done.

I was reading that
garden bird numbers

have been greatly reduced
by avian flu. Oh?

Do you think it's that?

Well, it seems more plausible than
that they held a mass meeting

and agreed to boycott
Sam Malik's garden. OK.

Good.
Well, that's reassuring to know.

They're probably all just dead.

How is work, Sam?

Yeah, well, you know.
Work's work -

cuts, underfunding, administrative
chaos, court backlogs.

I mean, it's all very well me trying
to put the scum back on the streets,

but the scum are mainly on remand,
waiting five years for a court date.

And what about sedative use?

Oh, yeah, no, I was going to
chat to you about that.

No, I only use them
in real emergencies.

But I have misplaced the last strip
you gave me, so...

HE GROANS
Know what I really hate?

Mm-hm - bagpipes,
low winter sun,

two-factor verification codes...

And doctors who charge 150 an hour

who suddenly decide to ration the
meds. Isn't that part of their job?

Do you know what I really don't need
right now, Claudia?

Er, the voice of reason?

I did my gratification exercises,
I used the prompt-pay app,

just give me the f...ing benzos!

Oh, my God, he's died!

Who has? That climate guy from
the hit-and-run, Marcus Calderwood.

But I thought they said that he
was... Died in surgery apparently.

Ruptured spleen.

Oh, that's awful!

I mean, I didn't always agree
with their tactics, but...

This'll break the internet for good.

Right, no rest for the wicked.
I'm off to court...

Tenner says it's cancelled.
You're on.

CHANTING, DRUMBEAT

REPORTER:
"No flowers, only rage" is the cry

from climate change activists
and other protestors.

It was just outside Lewes
nearly two days ago

that the acclaimed author
and founder of Stop Climate Genocide

was struck by a vehicle
and fatally injured.

But after two days
and still no arrest,

there is considerable
internet speculation

over what exactly happened
to this prominent activist.

Grace Eze? Hi.
Thank you so much for coming.

I wasn't sure who to contact.

I read your piece on Marcus
and I knew you were friends.

Thank you for everything you did
to try and help Marcus.

You said you had something
you wanted to tell me in person?

The police - they said
they're keeping an open mind

and hadn't made any arrests.
Right.

But they know who did it.

Marcus knew who it was
and he told me. And I told them.

Who did you tell?

The police officer at the scene -
Nicky Taylor.

Who did Marcus say did it?

PHONE RINGS

Felix?

Wait. Go again.

Who did Marcus say this to?

And they are sure about this?
Quite sure.

And you let me go to the first
press conference

and say we had no suspects?
Well, we didn't then.

If I'm going to go to the press,

I have to have accurate information
at my fingertips, Helen.

We need this officer in a cell
before we face the press again.

LINE RINGS
WOMAN ON PHONE: Yes, sir?

Get PC Nicholas Taylor.

Right, will do.

A paramedic on the scene said
she told you

that Marcus Calderwood
directly named a police officer

from this station
as the driver that struck him.

Are you saying that she's lying?
It was very noisy, sir.

There was a lot going on.

If she said it,
I certainly didn't understand it.

Obviously, he's Officer X
for the press.

I'm going to declare this
a critical incident now.

We'll need a Gold group

and somebody from a neighbouring
force to run the investigative side.

We'll also need your phone,
PC Taylor.

Am I suspended?
No.

Not yet.

Please tell me
they bloody found him.

Can confirm Officer X
is not at the property.

Vehicle is also missing.

Neighbour said it was driven away
yesterday morning

by the suspect's partner,
Ms Sandra Vodanovic.

They took my phone.

But they haven't suspended you?

Yet.

It was noisy.
You didn't hear her say it.

You think anyone's going to
believe me over her?

OK, fair play - when it comes to
protected characteristics,

the odds aren't in your favour.

But it doesn't matter
what they believe.

Matters what they can prove.

Where do you think he's gone?
Haven't a scooby, mate.

There'll be a bird involved
somewhere along the way, though.

Don't look so worried, Nicky Boy.

You're not the one who has to
prove anything here, remember?

Welcome, folks.

This Gold group includes
Leila Hassoun-Kenny from the CPS,

representatives of our Media
and Public Engagement Unit,

community liaison officers to deal
with any hate-related issues,

and I'd like to introduce
DI Miles Southgate

from Hampshire and the New Forest,

who we've brought in given
the sensitive nature of the case.

He's the SIO.

And DS Iain Packham,
also from my force.

So, here's where we are.

We can confirm the identity
of Officer X as PC Justin Mitchell.

Currently, no mobile evidence
putting PC Mitchell at the scene.

No helpful dashcam
has come forward either.

The disappearance of the bike
and the suspect's vehicle

means we don't have
meaningful forensics yet.

Finding one or preferably both of
those is our number one priority.

Mmm, and there is
one important update.

We have found CCTV footage
of PC Mitchell's Cayenne

boarding a ferry at Portsmouth
yesterday morning,

which DS Packham can show you.

Here it is, boarding a ferry
in Portsmouth to Calais

at 10.30am, on the morning
of 9th of October.

The neighbour witnessed it
driving away

and she also confirmed that
she had seen damage to the vehicle.

Is Sandra Vodanovic
still driving the vehicle? Yes.

So he could be concealed inside,

as could all the evidence
removed from the crash site.

Yeah, our thoughts exactly.

If there's sufficient evidence,

anyone assisting an offender
will face charges.

Of course. And we're still checking
PC Taylor's phone.

I would suggest naming
PC Mitchell very...

Obviously, the involvement
of Owusu...

..Sorry, Helen. Just to
say that there will be an obvious

anti-police bias among much of
the media, especially Felix Owusu.

So, we have to be really proactive
in ensuring that

that does not become
the dominant narrative.

WOMAN: All these climate activists
are just spoiled little babies.

MAN: Those climate protesters
are a disgrace.

Who's paying the police costs?!

WOMAN: Marcus was an inspiration

to everybody who cares about
the planet...

MAN: The police can't even stop
shoplifting,

let alone catch a m*rder*r...
WOMAN: What's wrong with people,

making fun of a guy
who's just been m*rder*d?

MAN: I don't believe what anybody
says about anything any more.

SAM SIGHS
This used to be a country.

How long's he been on remand for
now? Oh, I don't know.

I've lost count, but it's definitely
a record, poor guy.

Did you hear Marcus Calderwood
was the grandson of Lady Calderwood?

It's not a crime to be posh, Sam.

Anyway, some guy came in
asking for you. Who?

I don't know. He wouldn't give me
his name,

wouldn't give me any details,
insisted he'd only speak to you.

Oh, God, I hate that.

Hopefully, he'll get hit by a truck
or something.

Yeah. Yeah, who needs clients, eh?

Coffee? Yes, yes.

CHATTER

When are you going to
bring someone in?

How long is it going to take
for you to question someone?

Good morning, everyone.

I shall read a statement,
and because of the complex

and fast-moving nature of this...
GROANS

I know, but it is...

But it is, and owing to that fact,

we will not be taking
any questions today.

GROANS

We are aware of rumours
circulating online

about the involvement of
a serving police officer

in the hit-and-run incident
on Tuesday

which tragically took the life of
Marcus Calderwood.

We will be referring to this officer
as Officer X.

Obviously, I know
the identity of Officer X,

as do many within
Stop Climate Genocide.

Which is why we're asking
for your cooperation

in not naming them, as it could
impact on the investigation.

It's just a matter of time.

When will you reveal the name?

Thanks, Felix. I think you probably
heard Helen say, "No questions."

Why should anybody trust anything
you tell us?

I can confirm that this has been
designated a critical incident

and a Gold group has been
established, including

representatives of the community,
as well as hate-monitoring groups.

Thank you very much.

No gentle truck to save you,
I'm afraid.

He's back. Oh, God!

What's his name?
Well, he won't tell me.

But polite
and wearing a nice perfume.

Vetiver, I think. Send him through.

HE GROANS

Come on through.

Thank you.

Sorry, I didn't catch your name.
Oh, it's Claudia.

Claudia, thank you.

Hello.

You don't remember me, do you?

I'm afraid not,
but if it's any consolation,

I'm...terrible with names
and faces.

Have we met before?
Erm, yeah.

Sort of.

Oh, hello.

So...

A couple of years back,
there was a drugs case.

Some geezer - Tony O'Brien,
to be precise - went to Amsterdam,

took possession of a ton of pills,
mailed them to himself in Hastings,

went to collect them, went home
and opened them up.

Sounds like a tricky one
for the defence.

Well, you'd think so, wouldn't you?

But can you believe he got off?

Juries, eh?

Juries, yeah. Mm-hm.

And a solicitor advocate who was
the most annoyingly persistent

little twat you could possibly meet.

Jury would have sent him down 100%
without this fella.

I do an awful lot of such cases,
so you'll excuse me

if I don't recall
your particular role in this...

I was the police officer
who banged his fist

and mouthed, "You absolute c**t!"
at you.

Doesn't narrow it down, I'm afraid.

HE SCOFFS
I bet.

But if it's any consolation,
Tony O'Brien just got five years

for a very similar charge, so...
I'm not here for consolation.

That day, I thought, "If I ever need
a brief, I'm going to Sam Malik."

So, you need a solicitor now?

Marcus Calderwood identified me
before he died

as the driver in the hit-and-run.

I'm Officer X.

Nicky's in with the Gestapo, lads.

Hope you've all done
the right thing.

What's he like, then,
this Southgate?

Never forgiven him
for not playing Grealish.

LAUGHTER
Got management twat all over him.

Yeah, my mate in Hampshire
says he's just a bit weird.

Yeah? I stopped believing you
the minute you said, "My mate."

LAUGHTER
Anyway, Nicky's staunch.

He'll be fine.

This was among recently deleted
photos from your phone, PC Taylor.

Can you identify the people?

That's me, obviously.

Juzzer... Justin Mitchell.
Please use full names.

Justin Mitchell.

Kyle Jones.
Sorry, don't know his middle name.

And Robert Hyndley.

What do the four fingers mean?

I don't know. Probably the number of
goals Palace conceded or something.

Is it a reference to D4?
What's D4?

We're from Hampshire,
not Hong Kong, Nick.

There's officers from our force
know officers from your force -

some who've even served in both.
Mind-blowing, I know.

We know D4's the name of
your group chat.

Have you wiped it already?
Have I what?

OK, so you either think we were born
yesterday or you actually were.

You'll have had a panic code
or a symbol

to wipe incriminating conversations.
What was it?

HE SCOFFS

I think I'll have
my Federation Rep now.

Why were you trying to protect
Justin, PC Taylor?

Who else is going to protect us?

I mean, we've got the press picking
holes in every single thing we do,

saying we're too woke,
saying we're not woke enough,

saying we don't care
about ordinary crimes.

Also, who cares if we're in hospital
cos some kid's pulled a machete

that we can't search him for?

Seriously, mate,
who's got OUR backs?

I didn't warn Justin.

That's the truth.

PHONE BUZZES

Well, let's see what Justin
has to say on the matter.

They've found him?

Yeah. Looks like he's seen sense
and handed himself in

to a local solicitor.

RECORDER TURNS OFF

Word to the wise, Nick?

I don't disagree with some of
the stuff you were saying there,

as it goes.

But don't ever call one of us
"mate" in an interview.

It's "sir" or "boss".

Got it?

Yes...

..boss.
f*ck about, find out.

Yeah, Leila? We've found him.

That's great news.

I'll just need to bring my boss
up to speed on everything.

Potentially, we have
three charging decisions -

PCs Mitchell and Taylor,
plus a Ms Sandra Vodanovic.

Who's she? Mitchell's partner.

The neighbour apparently saw her
driving the vehicle

away from the property shortly after
the discovery of the body.

OK, she's obviously going to have to
face the music for that. Mm-hm.

They've drafted in an SIO
from Hampshire and the New Forest

to oversee the investigation.

Guess they'll need him
for any interviews, as well,

in the circumstances. Or her.

Is it a her?
No, it's a him.

SAM: Ah, hello!

Where is he?

Oh, he left.

What? Yeah. Well, he knows
his onions, obviously.

Said you'd need to conduct
an interview with another force.

Yeah. I'm the other force. Oh.

Never met or worked with
PC Mitchell.

Right, well, he said he'd rather
not be waiting in a cell all night

and that he'll be at the station
with me tomorrow morning at 9am.

Right. Anything else? Yeah, yeah.
He said he didn't do it.

Why did Marcus Calderwood say
he did, then? I don't know.

PC Mitchell doesn't know either.

Are you going to
represent him, then?

Who's the CPS lawyer?
Leila Hassoun-Kenny.

Ha!

HE CHUCKLES

PC Mitchell will contact me again
tomorrow morning.

I'll meet him and bring him
to the station.

But beyond that, I can't say
until I've had a bit more...

A bit more time with him.

Right, OK. Thank you.

What's with the "Ha!"
about Leila Hassoun-Kenny?

Dad is a S*ddam-era Iraqi exile -
Communist Party aristocracy -

and mum is Dame Harriet Kenny -

worst kind of smug,
post-modern academic.

OK, well, putting the sins
of the mother aside,

I don't think we should touch this.

Why? Er, a cop who smashed his car

into a guy trying to
save the planet?

ALLEGEDLY smashed his car. And
he's still entitled to a defence.

Mm-hm. Good luck trying to find one.

HE SIGHS

Dad, you can't! Why?

It's Marcus Calderwood
versus, like, a cop.

And you think I'd, like, be on the
wrong side of history or something?

Yeah, basically. Well, I've seen
the right side of history,

and it's full of
emoji-brained idiots... All right...

Wait, wait, wait! Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Hang on, no. Wait, wait, wait.

So, you don't think I should do it?
No... No. Wait. Wait.

Forget... Forget spurious sides
of history, OK,

and just think fair trial.

Because I don't think
you'd be able to cope, Dad.

What? Yeah, OK...
What?! Move over.

I won't be able to cope? You'll
go online, you'll get enraged.

And fair play to you,

you don't even have a proper side in
the culture w*r

because you look down on
everybody... I've got a side, right?

Shall I tell you my side?
Don't embarrass yourself...

Reason, logic and basic morality!

I warned you you'd sound stupid.
Oh, so morality's stupid now, is it?

Once you've succeeded in winding
yourself up, you'll sit there

arguing with imaginary adversaries
and pickle in your own cortisol.

And, you know, you're bound to lose.

Like anybody's going to believe
the word of a cop these days.

But that cop chose me.
And that...

That should count for something.

Honestly, Dad,
I just think it might be too much.

Yo! Get off Tinder, b*tch,
and buy me a drink!

SHE LAUGHS

Excuse me, can I get a drink?
WAITER: One second!

Although it is way past time
you lodged that loser Alex.

He said to say hi. Hmm!
I'm sure he said more than that.

But whatever. Put the phone down,
relax. School bell went ages ago.

Work's full-on at the moment.
I've got a massive caseload.

You're a bloody workaholic.

Well, if you mean I have
a high-pressure, full-time job...

Don't you ever stop to think

that there are more important things
in life than...work?

Most people don't only do it
for a laugh.

OK, look, let's not start.
I didn't. Mmm?

You spoken to Mum recently?
Not in the last few days.

Well, she's off to Madrid
if the knee holds out. Why?

Invited by the Minister for Equality
to get some medal for services

for discourse theory.
She never told me that.

Try answering the phone.

But actually, it's a real drag

because she was supposed to be
looking after

Nestor and Frida that weekend.
Where are you going?

Barcelona.
I really need some me-time.

Oh, you have other kinds of time?
THEY CHUCKLE

Laughing my f*cking arse off.

So, I was going to ask...

Oh, Tam, I don't know...
..if you could have 'em...

It's just two days,
and you love the kids.

Look... Well, Frida anyway.

I mean, nobody loves Nestor,
but he was...

He was never this bad
before the weed.

Please, babe,
it's really important to me.

It's Mattie Service-Station's 50th
and everybody is going.

I'll have to check the dates.
You're a superhero.

So, how IS work?

Well, I'm on
the Marcus Calderwood case.

Who? The climate change guy!
The one in the hit-and-run.

Never heard of him. He wrote
Tipping Point and Tears In The Rain?

Student sh*t. Well, it's a bit more
than that, actually.

It was... Gin Martini.

And please ensure that the glass
is properly frozen

or it's going straight back.
Don't look at me like that

when you're charging me
over a tenner for it!

And if you gob in it now,
I will know.

And my sister here,
she's a top lawyer,

and she'll shut this place down
faster than a new Covid variant.

Only half-sister, thankfully.

Same again, the Albarino. Thanks.

This...is for Frida's birthday.

What is it?
T-shirt.

Did you keep the receipt?

HE SIGHS

HE GROANS

RADIO NEWS PIPS

NEWSREADER: The East Sussex
Crown Prosecution Service

has issued a statement on the wave
of internet speculation

concerning the identity
of Police Officer X.

Stop Climate Genocide
has challenged the police

to name Officer X within 24 hours
or they will.

So, we've been looking at
all the points of contact

between Justin and Marcus.
OK. Great.

Justin really did not like the SCG.
He made that quite obvious.

Why?
I mean, apart from the obvious.

Well... So, people aren't being
exactly chatty,

but it does seem that he attended
a fatal road incident

and blamed it all on SCG
for disrupting the traffic.

And how did that extend to
Calderwood personally?

It didn't at first.

His first interaction with SCG
was at another protest,

where he was accused of being
heavy-handed in his restraint

during an arrest.
Any consequences? Nothing.

But then, the very first meeting
between them

was after he attended a neighbour
dispute at Marcus's property.

OK, and what happened there?
Between Marcus and Justin, I mean.

Marcus made a complaint
that Justin was hostile towards him

and referenced the SCG in a way
that was both negative

and irrelevant to the issue.

Right, any bodycam?
Guess what?

Switched off. Mm-hm. Ah, but here's
the really strange one, though.

Marcus made a complaint
against Justin

on at least one further occasion.
For what?

Stopped him
on his bike unreasonably.

And what happened
with that complaint?

Nothing again, as far as I can see.

Papers are going to have fun
with this. Mm-hm.

Can you send me the details?

Well, I'm trying to dig out
the full file, but...

..guess what?

Having trouble locating it?

Keep looking.

HE SIGHS

Blimey! Don't take this the wrong
way, but you look like sh*t, mate.

Yeah, I didn't sleep so well
last night.

Oh. Want a coffee? No.

Sleep's important. You've got to
sleep.

So they say,
all the time, everywhere.

Diabetes, heart disease -

you name it, poor sleep
will make it worse.

Yeah. Yeah, I know.
It keeps me up at night.

I'm one of those people -
head hits the pillow and...boom!

I'm out for the next eight hours,
even when I've got sh*t on my mind.

I'd say, "Lucky you",

but given the sh*t that's probably
on your mind right now...

No, I slept fine.

I'm not guilty and we'll show that.

Well, I wasn't able to sleep on it,
so I gave your case some thought.

A lot of people say
I shouldn't take it on.

Why not?

Considering retirement. What?!
You're not nearly old enough.

Early retirement -
health grounds.

What, a bit of insomnia?

It's linked to other things.

Believe me, Sam,

work is probably the thing
keeping you in a straight line.

Like a bike, you know?
Stop and you come crashing down.

Mmm.

Maybe steer clear
of the bike metaphors.

You ready?
Let's roll, baby!

CHANTING: Justice for Marcus!
Justice for Marcus!

SAM SIGHS
Somebody's going to need to

explain prejudice to these guys.

We can see about
going around the back.

Nah! Like I'm scared of
this bunch of Pony Club wankers.

Justice for Marcus!
Justice for Marcus!

CHANTING CONTINUES

That's him! f*ck off!

SHOUTING

f*ck off!

POLICE RADIO CHATTER

Over here!

Got something.
Right. Two-three to control...

POLSA just found a bike pedal
half-submerged in the ditch.

Ah, that's great!
Much too early for any...?

Yeah, testing's going to take
a little while,

but we have a record of the make,
colour and year of Justin's vehicle,

which we'll test against any paint
found on the pedal.

Who's the defence solicitor?

Sam Malik? Ha!

Yeah, you've dealt with him, then?
Yeah, could've been a contender,

but got stuck in the middle lane,
sneering at the faster cars.

Still has a reputation for
winning lost causes, apparently.

Hmm! Found a minor disclosure issue
and shafted us

on a really terrible r*pe case.
I suppose it's his job.

Even with what we have already,

I think there'll be enough
for a charge.

I'd like some forensics.
That's the game-changer.

CHANTING: k*ller cop! k*ller cop!

k*ller cop! k*ller cop!

k*ller cop! k*ller cop! k*ller cop!
k*ller cop!

k*ller cop! k*ller cop!

Did you see that...?

ALL: k*ller cop! k*ller cop!

k*ller!

k*ller cop! k*ller cop! k*ller cop!
k*ller cop!

k*ller cop! k*ller cop!

k*ller cop! k*ller cop! k*ller cop!
k*ller cop!

k*ller cop! k*ller cop!

Morning, Lennie. Justin.
Getting a bit tasty out there.

Hi, Justin, thanks for dropping by.

I'm DI Southgate from Hampshire
and the New Forest.

Call the Hug Academy, Lennie, one
of their Cuddle Bears has escaped.

Yeah, we'll just have to see
how soft I am, I suppose.

Justin Mitchell, I'm arresting you
on suspicion of causing

death by dangerous driving.
You do not have to say anything,

but it may harm your defence
if you do not mention...

How's tricks, Leila?
Yeah, good, thanks.

Are you sure
this is your fight, Sam?

I wouldn't go near it
with a bargepole.

You're the third person to tell me
that.

Well, I think even
somebody of your...talents

might struggle with this one. Oh!

My talents! For muddying the water.

Come on.
It's my job to muddy the water!

And I'm sure a few violent sex
offenders are very grateful to you.

Oh, bad news for the
Woke Lawyers Society,

there's still a thing called
due process.

Nobody uses "woke" any more, Sam,
it's a very low-status insult.

Lovely.
Get that from Teen Vogue, did you?

Get that from your mates
in the manosphere, did you?

I demand to see
the Chief Superintendent.

There was clear evidence
of excessive force out there.

Isn't that...? Felix Owusu, yeah.

Clear evidence of criminal damage,
too. Lucky the CPS is here

to witness it all. Excuse me, do you
really think all this is helping?

There's a m*rder*r in here.
One of their own. No, no, no.

There's a SUSPECT in here,
and you don't have all the facts.

We don't want facts.
We want justice.

Well, sadly, you can't have one
without the other.

"We don't want all the facts"?

They're upset and angry, Sam.
They have every right to be.

HE SCOFFS

HE SIGHS

Operation Wrath of God.

What? On your desk.

The little doll thingy.
Ah. I knew I knew who it was.

Yeah. Golda Meir. Mm. Yeah.

Operation Wrath of God.

I saw that film Munich with, um...

Eric Bana. That's it. Mm. Yeah.

Do you like films?

I do. Yeah.

Munich was decent.

I like Spielberg so...

Although...

Crystal Skull... Nah. Shocker. No.

Ugh... Come on.

It was stupid, weren't it? Yeah.

So, how come you've got her
sitting on your desk, then? Given...

Given what?

Well...

An Israeli Prime Minister -

I didn't think it would quite fit
the Malik ancestry report.

It was a gift.

And who gave you that, then?

All right, well, let's, er...

..let's start with the facts,
as unfashionable as they are.

Um, where were you
at the time of the incident?

On a run.

Did you have your phone with you?

No. Why?

Er, I was in a hurry, Sam.

And...sometimes
I just switch it off anyway.

Keep the noise out, you know?

Marcus Calderwood named you
in his dying declaration.

Right.

Did you know him?
I know OF him, obviously.

But did you meet?
How did he know of you?

I attended his property once because
of some issue with his neighbour.

What kind of issue?

Ah, I don't really recall, Sam.

Access road, noise nuisance...?

Anyway, words were exchanged.

About what?

Well, I'm not the number-one fan
of Stop Climate Genocide.

Anything else?

He said I'd stopped him
unreasonably on his bike.

And? And he was using his phone,
so I told him not to.

Why did you have such animosity
towards him?

If there's a reason, I need to know
it because they certainly will.

There was this thing.

I attended a crash.

Car T-boned, went under a lorry.

SIREN BLARES

And?

I'm Justin. What's your name, love?

It's Daniella.

I feel really strange, Justin.

POLICE RADIO CHATTER

We're going to get you out of here.

I'm pregnant.

Nice. How many weeks?

Nearly halfway.

Is my baby all right?
Oh, of course it is, course it is.

You after a boy or girl?
Little girl.

Yeah? Yeah.

You got any names yet or...?

Pearl. Pearl.
That's a lovely name, that.

Pearl. "Pretty as a pearl,"
my husband says.

Yeah, yeah.

Oh. I'm so cold.

I'm really scared. OK.

Please help me. I feel so strange.

Right, OK, Daniella.

I need you to relax, OK?

I'm not going anywhere.
I'm going to stay with you,

until we get you out of here
into a nice warm ambulance.

OK. Yeah, you and little Pearl in
there are going to be just fine.

Try and stay still for me.

Still as you can.
I'm not going to die, am I?

No, course you're not going to die.

No, you're going to be absolutely
fine. You're going to be OK.

Promise me. I promise you. I promise
you, you're going to be OK.

Yeah? You've got to be OK.
You've got baby Pearl to think of.

Yeah. Have you painted her room yet?

Yeah. What colour?

SHE PANTS

Pink. Pink?
That's a bit obvious, innit?

I'll give you a hand if you want.
I'll help you out.

Have you built the cot and all that?
I'm dead good with flatpacks, me.

You're going to be fine.

You're going to be fine.
I don't want to die.

Stay with me, Daniella.
Stay with me.

Stay here with me.
I don't want to die.

You're not going to die. Can I hold
your hand? Let me hold your hand.

Your hands are cold. Your
little tiny hands are freezing.

Stay with me. You're going to be
absolutely OK. You're going

to be fine. You're going to be fine.
You're going to be fine.

I need the ambulance, please.

Please, where's the ambulance?
Stay with me, Daniella.

RADIO BEEPS

YELLING:
Where's the f*cking ambulance?!

Daniella, please, please,
stay with me!

Stay with me! Stay with me, please.

RAIN POURS

I kept on telling her
she was all right.

But she wasn't.

And Daniella died in front of me.

And there was no little Pearl.

HE SNIFFS

And what did that have to do
with...?

Daniella should never have been
on that road.

She was a very nervous driver.

She messed up her exit and then -
pfft - done.

She was only on that road
because of them.

They closed the M23.

And you...

..you discussed that with him.
He did this speech.

And I remember it word for word.

YELLING

I will not apologise

for the inconvenience caused
to a privileged few!

Privileged? Inconvenienced?

So, you know, with hindsight,

I acknowledge that I might have
given him the impression

that I held him and his group
in a less-than-favourable light.

But why did he identify YOU,
Justin?

I don't know. I don't know.

And that's the truth.

Your anger over the accident
gives them a motive, of course.

Along with about 99%
of the population who hate it

when they pull that sh*t.
Right, erm...

The accident sounds bad.
Did you get any support for it?

What kind of support?
Emotional support.

PTSD... I haven't got PTSD.

How do you know? Same way
I know I haven't got skin cancer.

Bit early to be talking mitigation,
Sam. I didn't do it. OK.

OK.

Every cry-baby's got mental health
these days.

What's actually wrong with
being cheerful?

Nothing.

Now every pop star's banging on
about anxiety, on their Instagram.

"Me, me, me! I, I, I!"

You should fight it,
not wear it like a badge of honour.

Strangely, I think
you may have a point.

About fighting it, anyway.
See? I knew we'd get along.

Honestly, I did.

But, yeah...

I was cut up about
Daniella Fielding, massively.

I mean, that's kind of legit,
though,

when a pregnant woman dies
right in front of you.

But I'm as sane as you, Sam.

Oh, well, that's a relief.

Er... Now, we haven't discussed
a "no comment"?

I'm answering questions.

But don't worry,
I'm not going to be chitchatting

about Steven Spielberg
or mental health.

I think
that's probably for the best.

Don't you worry. I've
been in enough interviews

to know what really boils
their piss.

HE CHUCKLES

Are you enjoying this?

Um...

It's just nice to see things
from the other side, for a change.

PEN SCRATCHES

CHATTER

This is SCG Live...

We are at Romilly House, which was
the home of Marcus Calderwood.

He left it to the movement
and we are now going to use it

as a centre for education
and training of activists.

You see my piece about Marcus
for The Guardian?

Fake allies.

OK... Well, he also told me

about his fears of a split
in the movement, Sara.

Yeah, yeah, there's a group
that want to move

to more confrontational tactics.

Marcus was trying to hold it
all together.

Mmm. Wait, that was the meeting
he was on his way to? Mm.

Oh, just go away!

Who's that? Marcus's neighbour.

He has an organic vineyard.

Er, he's banging on about the signs
and us not having probate yet.

Total arsehole, apparently.

Yeah, I think Marcus mentioned him.

But anyway, yeah,
the split's definitely happening.

I mean, Marcus's death only
accelerated that.

Hey.

Come and look at this.

Who's behind this blog?

It's anonymous and almost certainly
encrypted. VPNs, etc.

Tribute in one of the broadsheets

says Marcus was going to call
his new book Indifference Kills.

Decent title. Mm.

What are they saying
about a vendetta?

That Marcus had made complaints
about Mitchell

that had been ignored.

They're obviously getting
their information from somewhere.

f*ck's sake.

I'll speak to Southgate about it.

They went in with Justin
about half an hour ago.

They could still be hours. Ugh.

OK, well, we can talk
in the morning. Thanks, Helen.

Sure.

So, where's your car, Justin?

Sandy's got it. Sandy being your
partner, a Miss Sandra Vodanovic?

Yeah. That's right.
Where is Sandy?

I don't know exactly.
Do you know why she took the car?

Yeah.

Why? To see a man about a dog.

Where?

About 40km outside Novi Sad.

Novi Sad... That's in, um...

..Serbia. Is that right?

That's right, Sam.

Right on the Danube,
provincial capital of Vojvodina.

Took a bit of a pounding from NATO
when the Serbs went into Kosovo.

So, she drove your car to Serbia?

Yeah. Why?

To see a man about a dog.

I'm asking why she drove to Serbia.

Well, she wants a dog.
Why did she choose Serbia?

That's where the dog she wanted was.

Why was it special?
Why did she drive?

Ah...

It was a mixture of
Bichon and Havanese.

She'd met the dog's mother
and really liked her character.

She drove because only a few
airlines allow dogs in the cabin

and she thought it would be cruel
to put it in the hold.

Plus, the additional drive
in-country, it made sense time-wise.

As far as price goes, it works
out pretty equal, and of course,

in the car you're more in control of
your own schedule.

And Sandy really enjoys driving.

And it had nothing to do
with removing evidence

from a vehicle that had just been
in a collision?

Oh, no, it did.

Sorry? She was seeing a man
about a dog

and removing evidence from a vehicle
that had just been in a collision.

Yes.

Please elaborate, Justin.

Sure.

The dog is called Francisco,
but she decided

it would be Pancho for short.

On the car. I was getting to that.
Get to it, then.

Whoa. Don't badger my client.

Sandy clipped the car in the gym,

when she was pulling out
on Saturday.

Clipped it? Mm.

And she has an uncle who runs
a car repair place in Slovenia,

so she'll probably get it fixed
there on the way.

You want us to believe

that your partner took the car
and drove all the way to Serbia,

to get a special dog.

Havanese Bichon.

The dad's Havanese and
the mum's Bichon...I think.

Could be the other way round,
actually.

And she decided to k*ll two birds
with one stone and get the damage

from a recent collision at the gym
fixed by a kindly Slovenian uncle.

I never said he was kindly.

Hmm, try and avoid sarcasm, chaps.

It will only confuse matters,
won't it?

Ivo's not all that kindly,
as it goes,

but he is a good mechanic
and it's mate's rates, so, yeah.

Any chance of a cuppa?

Pfft! Yeah, sure, Justin.

And then, maybe you can explain
to me why Marcus Calderwood

stated it was your car that
sent him flying off his bike.

Sorry, I can't explain that.

No, I bet.

And you'll need much more than
a c*ck-and-bull story

about a special dog
and a Serbian car mechanic.

Slovenian.

Uncle - Slovenian. Dog - Serbian.
I'm not sure that I've wrote it...

Mm-hm. That's right. OK.

At a guess, I'd say Sandy's probably

somewhere near Maribor right now,
if that...if that helps.

Interview terminated at 8.20pm.

We will renew in the morning.

Strange but true.

DOOR SLAMS

Mm.

I'll, uh, see you in the morning.

Yeah, sleep well.

So, yeah, she wants me to babysit.

I got us tickets to a gig,
that weekend, remember.

The migrant benefit in Eastbourne?
It's Ruben's band.

They need all the help they can get.

You know what she's like. Yeah.

A user.

Yeah, but also lonely and f*cked up.

I was luckier when it came to dads.

Never trust
a French Marxist philosopher.

HE CHUCKLES

I only really trust the French
on bread.

Oh, yeah,
they're strong on that,

especially when it comes
to sandwiches.

Did you ask her about the money? No.

How come she gets to go to
Barcelona,

but she can never afford to pay
her own bills on time?

Because that's just Tamara.

I don't know, is that a good reason?

It's always seemed like
a pretty bad reason to me.

Maybe, but she's not going to
change.

Definitely not while everyone always
goes, "Oh, that's just Tamara."

Who are you texting?
My favourite half-sister.

Saying what?

Saying I can't do it. You're right.

What excuse?
No excuse. I don't need one.

If you ask someone for a favour,
you have to allow them to say no.

Oh, and you think Tamara will
see it that way?

I don't care. Let's go to the gig.

We're all entitled
to me-time, hmm?

How's it going, Justin?

Yeah, can't complain.

Dawn's on in the morning.

Says she'll bring you a proper
breakfast from Mario's.

Oh, tell Dawn she's a star,

and I will have
the special breakfast roll

and a double espresso,
just a little bit of milk in it.

Flat white.

It's not a flat white, Rebecca, cos
there's nothing flat about theirs,

and they literally put
a pint of milk in.

Would you like me to trim the fat

off your bacon, as well,
my little prince?

Oh, you can trim
the fat off my bacon any time, Bex.

Go on, ask me about the egg.

No, because you'll just make
some rubbish joke about

"over easy, like your women".

How did you...?

You're a mind-reader, you!

HE SIGHS

What's happening with Nicky Taylor?

Uh, denying he heard anything.

But they took his phone.

Yeah, of course they did.

Everybody saw the Mermaid?

Yeah?

Good, cos they'll be all over
the group chats.

Nicky never said anything to me,
you know.

I know.

Now, don't go making a nuisance
of yourself

or we'll have to do
some police brutality.

Yeah, I'll try.

DOOR CLOSES, LOCK CLICKS

Here we go.
HE LAUGHS

Is that your man?

IN HAMPSHIRE ACCENT: He's from
the New Forest in Hampshire.

Come to save the day, Frodo.

LAUGHTER

Hey, you heard the latest on
Sandra's alibi?

She went to Serbia to get a dog.

Oh, yeah, sure you did, Sandra!

She's a Serbian national, right?

Uh, yes, but she travelled
on an EU passport.

Serbia isn't in the EU yet.

No, but her mother is Slovenian,
and they are.

Thanks, Brexit.

Well, in this case, it wouldn't make
too much difference because Slovenia

has national laws preventing
the extradition of its own citizens.

We can still blame Brexit
though, right?

Justin was just taking
the mickey, basically.

Monosyllables, repetition,
smartarse non sequiturs.

Attention-seeker.

If you weren't involved in a crime
of this sort,

wouldn't you take it more seriously?

Well, yeah. Lawyer was a real pain,
as well.

His wife k*lled herself.
Jumped in front of a train.

Oh.

Oh, that's never good.

And terrible for the train driver.

Worse for the jumper.

Still, preferable to being married
to Sam Malik though.

SHE INHALES SHARPLY

Too far.

We've got it! Marcus's complaint -
there's headcam footage!

MARCUS: Why have you stopped me?

JUSTIN: I believe you are riding

in a careless and inconsiderate
manner,

contrary to the Road Traffic Act
of 1988.

No, you just want to harass me.
I was riding perfectly normally.

You were sending texts.

I'd pulled over to check
my heart rate on my phone.

You were not fully stopped.

You should be looking at
the road ahead

and aware of potential hazards.

You wouldn't want to cause another
fatal accident, would you?

I haven't caused any fatal
accidents,

and you're on camera by the way,
officer.

Oh, good.

Then there's record
of my concern for your welfare,

as well as other road-users.

I'd hate for a car
to just smash into you one day.

Leave you slowly dying
by the side of the road.

HE TAPS KEYS

JUSTIN, ON CLIP: I'd hate for a car
to just smash into you one day.

Leave you slowly dying
by the side of the road.

Good morning, Sam.

They've got new evidence
they'll certainly be using

in the Magistrates'
to secure the extension.

What is it?

A video encounter with Marcus

where you're literally threatening
him with what actually happened.

You have been identified
by the victim of a hit-and-run,

with whom you have
a history of harassment.

Your vehicle has conveniently
disappeared.

I'm not denying that
we're the underdogs.

That's why I turned to you.

And that's all before
Forensics come back

with a pedal that they've
found at the scene.

So, Justin, hey, hey...

..before we go to court, is there...

..is there anything
you want to tell me?

Is there anything I need to know?
