09x10 - Pick Your Poison

Post by bunniefuu »

[ Bird squawking ]

[ Wasps buzzing ]

Suzanne:
got to get the larvae.

I absolutely need
this protein.

[ Buzzing continues ]

All right.

[ Bleep ]
this is it.

Ow, ow, ow, ow!

[ Screams ]

Narrator: one man...

[ Tarzan yell ]

...one woman...

Whoo!

...alone for 21 days
to face the wrath...

Woman: stop raining!

...and fury

Of the most hostile environments
on earth.

Aah!

[ Animal growls ]

They have no clothes,
no food, no water.

I want water.

Do they have the skill
and the will...

Fire!

...to overcome the most
brutal survival challenge

Of their lives...

Naked and afraid?

Man: this is not camping
in [bleep] yellowstone.

Narrator:
deep in northeastern brazil,

The clear blue soninho river

Cuts through a harsh terrain

Of steep cliffs
and scorching sand,

And its shoreline is home to the
region's most vicious wildlife.

Hiding along the riverbank
is the 400-pound jaguar,

And one of the world's
deadliest vipers,

The fer-de-lance.

Its venom can k*ll a man
in a matter of hours.

In the trees are swarms of wasps

That sting
their victims repeatedly

And can send them
into anaphylactic shock,

But the extreme temperatures

Are one of the greatest
threats out here

Due to the desert climate

That can soar above
100 degrees during the day

And plummet into
the low 50s at night.

[ Bird cries ]

I saw a couple of --
looked like turkey vultures.

Don't circle over me.
I'm not dead yet.

My name is anthony.

I work with search
and rescue in las vegas.

Search and rescue involves
first aid, wilderness first aid,

Active searches
for anyone that is lost.

I've been into survival
in one capacity or another

For at least 20 years.

I've built lean-tos,
small shelters,

Catch snakes
and snapping turtles.

-Hey.
-Dada.

Anthony:
hey, princess.

I do have one very beautiful,
little 3-year-old girl

That is my heart of hearts.

What were you taking
a picture of?

You.

My daughter has changed
my life in every way.

She doesn't quite understand
what all this is about.

She just knows
that I'm gonna be on tv.

"Nudy rudy," she calls it.

Narrator:
anthony's years of experience
in search and rescue

Give him an edge
in extreme situations,

But he has never had
to apply these skills

To his own survival
for an extended period of time.

He begins with an initial
primitive survival rating

Of 7.2.

Suzanne:
we have been on the river

For about an hour
and a half already,

So I am deep
in part of nowhere.

My name is suzanne.

I'm a researcher
from richmond, virginia.

I got my phd
in health-related sciences.

I am married.
I'm the mother of four boys.

Man: saying goodbye to mom.

Big group hug.

Suzanne: when they found out
I would be on the challenge,

My boys, they've
encouraged me to tap out

So that I can get back home,
and I was like,

"No way. No weenie mom here."

I was raised
in a very dysfunctional,

Turbulent household.

My mother didn't turn on
the hot-water heater,

And she chose to use roadkill

Instead of regular food
from the store,

Then, I had to rely on myself,

Which is why
I lived in the woods,

Foraging for food,
playing with fish and animals

And building campsites.

I hold myself
to higher standards

Because I know how strong
I was as a little girl,

And now I want to know that I'm
just as strong as a grown woman.

Narrator: a medical professional
and self-taught survivalist

Since childhood,
suzanne comes into the challenge

With a sound knowledge
of shelter and fire building

And a keen awareness of
what her body needs to survive.

She begins with a psr of 6.7.

I guess this is where I get off.

I'm very confident that
I'll be able to survive 21 days

Because it's just 21 days.

It's just bugs, and
I'm smarter than all of that.

And we're off.

I'm always thinking
about my daughter.

I brought along
her -- [chuckles]

Her gift.

She likes to leave gifts
in my boots.

For her, I have to do this.

I want her to know
you can go off,

Step out of the box
and succeed at things,

And they make you a better
person, a stronger person.

See you in 21 days, kinsey.
Love you.

I'm either going 21
or I'm leaving on a stretcher.

It is hot as hell.

I wonder if my partner's feet
are burning

As bad as my feet
are right this second.

Hey!
Hey.

I had to bust my a*s
and get to you.

You're the partner.
Yep.

How are you?
-I'm good. How are you?

Good.
Ready to do this?

-I am. What's your name?
-Great. Suzanne.

-Anthony.
-Anthony, nice to meet you.

-Nice to meet you.
-Okay.

Oh, nice.

Narrator:
suzanne and anthony have
each brought one survival item.

Well, I brought
a knife.

Oh, excellent.
Yeah.

I have our bug net
to keep us safe at night.

Fantastic.

They've also been given
a fire starter.

It is an absolute
necessity out here.

Yes, it is.

-And I have the map.
-Perfect.

And what do you say we head on
to that small island --

And then just
take it from there.

Let's go.

My goal is out to that
furthest edge that we can walk.

And once the current either
starts to pull us

Or we go past
chest level,

We'll jump in and
let the current carry us.

Yep.

Don't forget
there's anaconda in here.

If I see a snake,
it's gonna be dinner.

The current is getting
a little more difficult here.

Yeah.

Get to the bank.

Keep moving.
All right.

Oh, good lord.

Let's see if we can go up there
and get a better view.

Yeah, works for me.

What's your background
as far as survival stuff?

-I've been camping before.
-[ Laughs ]

I was born and raised
in the backwoods of missouri.

Okay.

So, by doing
a bit of camping,

I kind of mean
I kind of lived camping.

-Lived in the backwoods.
-No, I just -- yeah.

Anthony:
I'm feeling like I'm out here in
one of the harshest environments

That I'm ever gonna try
and make it through,

And I'm with somebody
who's a weekend camper.

What about you?

I've been working
with search and rescue.

Oh, cool.

Suzanne: my first impression
of my partner

Is I think
he's used to being in charge,

Which is fine as long as he
doesn't try to diminish my role

Or try to assume
that he's in charge of me

Because this is
really a team thing.

That sun is really
starting to get hot.

Hot as hell.
Ooh, hot, hot, hot!

Probably my biggest worry
right now is the sun.

I can burn
very easily.

I need shade for my feet,
shade for my feet.

How much further
you want to go?

I like to make
a decision and --

I like to not stop
on the hot sand.

[ Laughs ]
I bet you don't.

I just want to make sure
we have a destination here

And we're not just...
Yeah.

...walking to test
my tolerance of heat.

Let's get you
maybe over here into...

It looks a little bit
more shaded.

Oh, big palm fronds.

This is really protected,
completely in the shade.

Perfect. We can make
the bed this high.

Anthony: I feel like this is
a great shelter area.

So we just need to clear
this out, so...

Here we go.

I got firewood.

Awesome.

Awesome?

How about, "yay,"
'cause this was heavy.

Watch out.

That works.

Did you check
this tree for bees?

-Nope.
-That might be a bee nest.

Suzanne:
I am climbing up here because...

I see a big one over there.

Ow, ow, ow,
ow, ow, ow, ow!

-Wasps?
-Ow, ow!

I don't know that we should
have our shelter there.

Anthony:
you got wasps or...

I don't know.
They sting.

Ow, [ bleep ]

Ow, and there's
another one in my hair.

Yeah, those
looks like wasps.

All right, so
where do you want to go?

[ Sighs ]

Great part about this is we were
gonna get away from the sun.

We spent a lot
of time on this,

So we really have to prioritize,
or it's gonna be dark.

I think we're better off
by the water.

Anthony: so, we thought we found
a shelter out in the woods.

It's shaded, but...

And they ran us out of our home.

So, walking down to look at
the lagoon, it is very exposed.

Maybe here.

So, that has hurt us,

And we spent half the time

We needed to build a shelter
working from there,

And now we're
working backwards,

So, yeah,
that's a kick in the a*s.

Oh, you got it going.

Awesome.

We're gonna build a basic
lean-to, but I'm fearful.

The wildlife is an issue
as far as being on the ground,

And we are near water.

That's where the animals kind of
come to drink and to hunt,

But we're losing sunlight,

And we've got to make
something happen

Just to get us
through to tomorrow

So we can reassess
what we're gonna to do.

[Bleep]

[ Sighs ]

Suzanna.

Suzanne:
anthony.

Get over here.

I think it's
a fer-de-lance.

-If it is a fer-de-lance...
-Ooh, [bleep].

...and if I go after him,
he's gonna come after me.

Suzanne: oh, my god.
It is totally a fer-de-lance.

Whoo!
Okay.

You're gonna
pin him down.

Do not get bit.

Okay?

That wasn't --

Oh, my god.
Holy crap.

It's curled up
in the center.

Anthony, they have
a long strike.

[ Hisses ]

Suzanne: oh, my god.
It is a fer-de-lance.

Whoo!
Do not get bit.

Oh, my god.

[ Hisses ]

Oh, my god.
Do not let go of him.

Oh, my god.
Hold him.

I need that hatchet.

Do not let him up.

Anthony: cut that.

Oh, yeah.
It's off.

Yay!

Oh, my god.

Whoo-hoo!

Snake, it's what's
for dinner.

Awesome.

[ Insects chirping ]

Suzanne: yay!

Anthony: I like my steak rare,
but I like my snakes well done.

Fer-de-lance,
it's not just any snake.

Both: cheers.

Oh, my god.

It's so cold, but...

Suzanne:
we're in wintertime here,

12 1/2 Hours of dark,

12 1/2 Hours of cold.

Anthony:
I'm freezing my a*s off.

[ Birds squawking ]

Anthony: the temperatures drop
crazy out here at night.

I think I got, like, 5 minutes
of sleep, maybe 7...

-Mm-hmm.
...spread out.

Yep, 2 minutes here,
2 minutes there.

Yeah, it was cold,
but we didn't have any bugs

While we were sleeping...
-That's true.

...and that was good.

So, we're gonna have
to find something

That works better
than this

And something warmer
than this

If we're gonna get by.

I know it's dry season.

I know that we're not
getting any rain.

The shelter is just
not important to me.

Okay.

All we need is some firewood,
and we'll be better,

And I want
to continue to eat.

I would like to make some fish
traps and worry about food.

Well, we just got a snake
last night to eat,

So my plan is shelter
absolutely first.

Suzanne:
in order to prioritize tasks,

Both team members need to be on
the same page, and...

Currently we're not.

Might as well walk down
to that corner,

There's actually workable trees
for shelter on that side.

So, you're gonna
take a walk?

You're gonna look,

But I'm still
gonna call this home

Unless convinced
otherwise.

All right,
I'll be back.

Okay.

Anthony: you know what sucks
about where we're at right now

Is during the day,
when we're wanting to sleep,

At the hottest point of the day,
we're gonna be baking

'Cause there's
absolutely no shade.

A good shelter
is very important.

She doesn't believe so,
but I do.

She's very independent.

Suzanne: I believe that
he thought we would have

A really awesome shelter,
and the concept

That we're sleeping
on the ground

Is not acceptable to him

Even though it feels fine, so...

Anthony:
that sun is really getting hot.

I'm an irish kid.
I'm gonna burn twice as fast.

Suzanne:
because it's so pristine and
I know there's no humans around,

There's no big livestock around,

And it's running
through all these rocks,

I'm not worried about it.

It's really hot,
but this is a cool spot.

I'll make a fish basket
and then a cap that goes in it

So they are encouraged to go in
and, for whatever reason,

They don't swim backwards
back out.

That's what I'm hoping.

I want to know that anthony
is making good decisions

Because we need to get
through together as a team.

Anthony: down here, there's
a big flat green patch

In between three trees,

Close to the water,
out of the sun,

But it's not very pretty.

Suzanna likes pretty.

She's gonna hate it.

-How long of a hike is this?
-Not long.

This is a lot further from
the water than I thought.

Are we almost there?

No.

So far, you have not
convinced me on this spot.

Ah, we are here.

[ Insects buzzing ]

This flat clearing takes us
off the beach.

It's shaded
so we're not baking.

I can use the trees.

If I clear all this,
it's a whole lot of open space.

Okay.
Yeah.

I actually
prefer where we were.

I feel like there's gonna be
more bug problem here

From all these bugs
that are around us right now.

[ Buzzing continues ]
hmm...

Anthony:
suzanna, she's headstrong.

I knew she wasn't gonna be
a fan of this place.

It is the smarter option.

Yeah, but what do I know?

[ Insects chirping ]

Now we're out
of firewood.

[Bleep]

Anthony: here's the point,
and I still have

A [bleep] up shelter
sleeping on a cold ground.

Do I know ground is conductive

And taking all
of my [bleep] body heat?

Yeah, 'cause I'm actually warmer
now than I was laying down.

We've got to get serious
about this.

Right now, this is
[bleep] amateur hour.

[ Wood chopping ]

We've got to get
a lot of firewood,

So, today, it's got to be
firewood, firewood, firewood

So we're not searching
in the middle of night

For ways to stay warm.

Your back is directly
in the sun.

I can tell the sun
is getting really hot.

Agreed.

This is a heap
of firewood,

So this is
a couple nights' fire.

We can get through
this son of a b*tch.

Are you pretty dead set
on getting that one?

[ Sighs ]
[bleep] me.

I can't stress how important
firewood is gonna be.

Okay, well,...

I'll gather some
of the fallen logs.

Okay.

Suzanne:
I'm really concerned right now
because he already has sunburn,

And he wants to bring

This really large log
back for firewood,

But I think putting himself
in the sun

And risking further sunburn.

At the same time, he's exerting

A lot of energy
to cut through it.

I just don't see how that thing
is gonna get cut

In any short amount of time.

I've got to get
through this.

[ Wood chopping ]

I wish it wasn't so hard.

I do a lot of stupid things,
but it's calculated risk.

In my mind,
there is no quitting this.

This has to be done.

I am getting tired.

Break, you son
of a b*tch.

So far through this thing,
it's just not giving any slack.

I think now it's anthony
versus dead tree.

Man, it sucks to cut.

I'm gonna start
getting tired.

I'm frying myself.

[ Wood chopping ]

[ Birds chirping ]

I need this.

[ Sighs ]

The reason I'm willing
to burn these calories

Trying to do this is
this is a heap of firewood.

If you put out big effort,
you get big reward.

Come on, firewood.

[ Wood snaps ]

Yay.

Maybe I won't be freezing
my a*s off tonight now.

We got firewood.

Oh, that's [bleep] heavy.

All right.

Partner has got to burn
some calories.

My partner had better be happy.
She better take this serious,

And hopefully she understands

The importance of me
busting my a*s.

-You're back. Yay.
-Yeah.

I need to move double-time...
-What?

...to drag a very
heavy log back.

Okay.

My goal is, let's get
one back for tonight,

And sometime tomorrow,
the other one can come back.

So you're saying take
the heavier piece back.

Yeah, the heavier piece
is going back now,

But it's heavy.

It's really --
it's a fireman's carry.

All right,
I'm gonna try them.

All right.

Okay, hang on
a minute.

Ready?

Yeah, that's not gonna happen.
That is not gonna happen.

It's too heavy for me.

I know you want this log
really bad.

I'm just -- I'm not strong
enough to do that.

Anthony.

[ Insects chirping ]

Suzanne: last night, anthony
just got real frustrated,

And I realize that
he's tired and sunburnt,

And I think the sunburn
is making him feel

Even more cold at night.

I don't mean
to nag you about it,

But you're getting
really red,

And I don't know if
you're drinking very often.

I am, like, crazy tired.

I've put out so much energy,

So I definitely need protein.

I usually eat a lot,
probably 3,000 calories a day,

Down to none.

Suzanne:
I'm actually a little concerned

That he's not taking
water breaks.

I know that we're sweating out
and losing a lot of our fluids,

So I hope he doesn't
get overheated.

He's not in the best place
right now.

He's different than
the anthony I knew on day 1.

[ Bird cries ]

This is not smart. I probably
should be lying down right now.

I need a snake. I need a fish.

I just want to find something,

Something to eat,
anything.

So dehydrated.

[ Sighs ]

Heartbeats are irregular now.

I can feel it
in the way that I breathe.

Chest feels really heavy.

Now, it's tough out here,
and my daughter needs to know

That you push through adversity.
You keep going,

So I keep going.

[ Insects chirping ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Suzanne: anthony.
[ Bleep ]

Stay there. No, stay there.
Stay there.

Stay there. Stay there.
-[ Groans ]

No. No, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no.

We're not gonna
have you pass out

'Cause you're gonna
land on rocks.

Now, lay down.
Here. Lay down.

[ Anthony groans ]
whoa!

So I need you
to not move, okay?

Hurry.

Don't move.
-[ Groans ]

-[ Screams ]
-oh, my god!

Suzanne: hurry.

No, stay there. Stay there.
Stay there.

Now, lay down.
-[ Groans ]

[ Mumbles ]

Narrator: after days of working

In the oppressive heat
with limited water,

Anthony suffers
from a second-degree sunburn

And is so severely dehydrated,

The medics cannot get an iv
into his collapsing veins.

He is evacuated to the nearest
hospital for treatment.

-One, two...
-Stay down.

-...three.
-Okay.

[ Medics speaking
in native language ]

Narrator:
forced to tap out on day 4,

Anthony's psr
drops from 7.2 to 5.8,

Leaving his partner to survive
the next 17 days alone.

Suzanne:
I'm really sad that anthony left

Because I was hoping
to have a partner.

We could share some
of these trials together.

To be able to share that
with somebody,

I was really
looking forward to that, so...

Now it's just like
when I was a little girl.

I have to rely upon myself
if I'm gonna make it.

[ Growling in distance ]

[ Whispering ]
it's too dark for me to see,

And I keep hearing noises,

And I know that it's not
that far from me,

And I don't know what it is.

[ Normal voice ]
I guess this is the "afraid"
part of the challenge.

[ Growling ]
oh!

[ Whispering ]
I just heard a noise
behind my shelter.

[ Normal voice ]
but it freaks me out
each time it happens.

I certainly felt alone last
night, and it was scary, too.

Now I don't have a partner.

I'm the only one out here,

And food is my top priority,

In particular protein.

If I want to eat, I have
to figure it out myself.

[ Bird cries ]

I see protein.

There's a wasp nest

With, of course, wasps on it.

[ Buzzing ]
got to get the larvae.

Narrator:
if suzanne can get to it,

A handful of wasp larvae

Will provide 200 calories
of desperately-needed protein.

Nope, this is it.

And the nest is down.

They didn't go to the nest.

They kind of went right back
to where the nest was

And kind of made a big ball.

Dare I reach in?
[ Chuckles ]

There's one right there.

Oh.

Ah!

I hit a wasp nest
and no stings.

That was epic.

I didn't have anybody helping.

Like, I did it.
I knocked it down.

I got it.
I harvested it,

And now I'm gonna eat them.

Mmm.

I'm gonna take my time
and enjoy this.

This morning,
I finished my fish basket.

Protein is vital to me.

I really want to get a fish.

I can taste fish.

I hope it works.

We'll see.

All right.

This water is so cold.

And...no fish.

What to do?

I should be smarter
than the fish,

So I made a fishing net.

It's very similar to when
I was a little girl

And I'd play in the creek
and use my t-shirt

And just hold the t-shirt out
and wait for them to swim over.

All right, you guys.
Come on, I need this.

And I'm really desperate
for protein.

But they're not going for it.

This is not gonna work either.

I'm back to square one again.

Dagnabbit.

It is hard to not eat
on a regular basis

And to only have a couple
of hours in the morning

And a couple of hours
in the evening

To try to learn skills
for an environment

That you don't even know.

I could fish in missouri.
That's no big deal.

It's just --
it's different here.

It's harder.

There's a fish in here!

How awesome is that?

Yay! Oh, I'm so excited
I could cry.

It died in here.

I don't believe that,
smelling pretty ripe.

That's not a good sign.

I think that was just my fault

For placing it where it was
gonna be direct sun

During the hottest part
of the day,

So I think I baked the fish
in the fish basket.

I am not gonna be able
to eat this fish,

Which is a crying shame.

Yeah.

I know I haven't had
the nourishment that I need,

And I purposely studied
about starvation

So that I could understand
what my body would go through.

It's different when you're here.

I don't know
if I'm strong enough

To make it through
the challenge.

[ Insects chirping,
toad croaking ]

[ Whispering ]
it's right behind my shelter.

[ Croaking continues ]

[ Croaking stops ]

I am so happy right now

And so proud of myself

Because I got
this huge source of protein,

And I did it by myself, and this
will be the most protein

I've had in two weeks, so...

I got it. I can do it.

Oh, no.

This part of my lip and that
part of my tongue, kind of numb.

Narrator: cane toads excrete
a milky white toxin

From their poison glands
that can be extremely dangerous,

Even fatal, to humans.

Oh, no, no, no, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no.

Please do not tell me
I just got poisoned.

Suzanne: today is my lucky day.

These only bloom for 24 hours.

I want to say the name
is something like umbusu,

But I remember I gave it
a completely different name,

And it had more to do
with anatomy.

[ Insects buzzing ]

Penises.
Yep, that.

Tastes like cucumbers,
and not the big ones either.

And when it's hanging,
I mean, like that...

That's why I remember it
'cause it looks funny.

This is a poisonous toad.

I could have been really,
really ill

Because I k*lled something
and I wanted protein.

Let me just go get rid
of this guy.

[ Birds calling ]

And that's twice now
where I had sources of protein

That I couldn't eat.

I'm lucky my lip is okay.

I really need to catch something

'Cause I got to have
food for extraction.

I hope that's not a rock.

You know what?
I think that's a stingray.

Oh, my god.

That could be dinner.

I've got to get that.

Narrator:
hiding in the shallows,

Stingrays defend themselves
using a venomous serrated tail.

It can slice through flesh
in seconds,

Causing excruciating pain.

Oh, my god.
I know I can do this.

Please don't move.
Please don't move.

Let me get you.

Oh!
I hope I got it.

Oh, my god.
I think I got it.

[ Sighs ]

[ Voice breaking ]
I just got a stingray,

Which is a whole lot of protein.

I'm so excited.

Gosh, he's huge.

I've got to k*ll him.
[ Sniffles ]

I'm sorry.

[ Insects chirping ]

I think the edges are done.

My mouth is watering.
[ Chuckles ]

I don't have a fork
or knife, so...

I'm just digging in.

Mmm, mmm.

Mmm...

I can't even describe
how good this is.

It's a smoked fish that
is more dense than salmon

But not dense like tuna.

Narrator: suzanne will gain
500 calories from this stingray

And potassium
for her depleted muscles.

Suzanne:
this huge chunk of protein

Is just gonna make a huge
difference for extraction.

I really hope there's no jaguars

That are hungry
for stingray tonight.

Early morning, day 21.
Ooh!

Time to get through extraction.

I know I'm here,
and I have to get there.

I have this long walk.

I'm worried
about the extraction.

I did not come this far
to not make it through it.

Narrator:
suzanne will have to endure
a 5-mile journey barefoot

Over 130-degree sand
to reach a dirt road

Next to this giant
table mountain.

She'll also have to watch out
for the highly poisonous

Brazilian yellow scorpion.

Only half an inch long,
it blends into the landscape,

And its venom leads
to organ failure and death.

Suzanne: ooh, goodness.

My feet are already getting hot,

And that's really
starting to concern me.

Ow!
Ooh, ooh!

There's a long way to go,
and it's not gonna get cooler.

Ow!

What?

Ow!

Ow, ow.

Oh, I got to fix this.

Ow!

My heels are burning
just sitting here.

So, I just use this

Right there,
just a little bit of padding,

Just a little bit,
just enough to get me through.

Come on.

Ow, ow, ow, ow.

Ow!

Oh, my gosh.

Oh.

Ow.

I swear that mountain
keeps moving.

It cannot possibly be
that much further.

[ Bird cries ]

Oh, don't circle for me.
I'm not dead.

Heat, thorns,

Heat, thorns,
and a dirt road.

Oh, my god.

Oh! Oh, my god.

I did it!

Oh!
Ow, ow, ow, ow.

Yes!

Oh, my god.

It took everything I had

Physically, mentally,
and emotionally to do this.

[ Sighing ]
oh, my god.

I wanted to see how hard
can I push myself.

Would I get
to a breaking point?

But, hey, I did it!

I am so happy

And so proud of myself,

And nobody can
take this from me.

That was awesome.

Narrator:
suzanne survived 21 days in
brazil's soninho river valley,

17 Of them on her own.

She lost a total of 23 pounds

And battled
unforgiving temperatures,

Life-threatening situations,
and starvation.

I probably look like
a walking skeleton.

But her resolve paid off, and
she succeeded in catching food.

[ Voice breaking ]
I just got a stingray.

Narrator:
by completing the challenge,

Her psr rises from 6.7

To 7.7,

Proving that a sharp mind
and tenacity

Can be the ultimate
survival tools

To make it naked and afraid.
