Leah: the jungle
is not a joke at all.

I'm going to be gone
for about 3 1/2 weeks.

Getting some last minute
cuddles in

Before we tuck little bit
in here to bed.

Tell mama to behave,
too.

Mama, behave.

Always.

I've never been so excited
and so nervous

At the exact same time.

These mountains are wild.

High elevation,
something I'm not

Just extremely experienced in.

Leah: we're not even there yet,
but it's cooling down.

I can tell the temperature
change, and I love the sun.

I'm hoping that
there will be some times

That we're going to have
a little bit more sunlight

To stay warm.

Narrator: leah and tommy
have been dropped high

In the sierra nevada
de santa marta

Mountain range
near minca, columbia.

Located off the caribbean coast,

This mountainous jungle
has snow-capped summits

Rising as high
as 18,000 feet.

Moisture from the ocean and
winds from the peaks converge,

Creating freezing
gusts and temperatures

As low as 43 degrees.

I am most nervous about
the weather and animals,

Primarily snakes
because they're everywhere.

I've never seen any
kind of bamboo like this.

This is just amazing.

Being a redneck is wonderful.

It means I get to do
pretty much whatever I want,

Whenever I want,
out in the woods,

Out in the wild.

I have made fire from peeing
in a clear bag

And twisting it tight
and using the sun.

When I was 6 years old,

If I wanted to go out
and go hunting,

I just grabbed a g*n, walked out
the door and went hunting.

There's no question in my mind
I'm going to make it to 21 days.

Narrator:
tommy enters the challenge
with solid self-taught skills,

But not in top
physical form.

He begins with a primitive
survival rating of 6.5.

Tommy: my two girls mean
everything to me.

My daddy is going
to rock this.

Both of my girls to realize that
there's nothing stopping them

From something
that they want to achieve.

I'm kind of eyeballing
some vines

I'm interested in already.

We're not even there yet.

I've been raised
in the outdoors.

I mean, I was just an outdoorsy
girl, the tomboy.

I definitely learned more
about survival

After having going
through military courses.

Making a fire, shelter-building,
I'm ready to go.

I've been out in the woods
for fairly long periods of time,

But 3 weeks is longer
than any of those times.

I really want to see
want kind of oomph

I've got inside me.

I'm definitely going to be
testing myself.

This is a little bit
treacherous here, super steep.

As you can see, I already met
a lot of local wildlife.

So, yeah, I've already been
chewed up quite a bit, but...

I'll be honest with you.

I'm a little bit nervous
about snakes.

You know, obviously
there's snakes everywhere.

Yeah, I'm not as worried
about the snakes, you know.

Good, love it.

So I'm good about that.

All right.i mean, I'll walk in front.

It's just find some mud and clap
on, I'll be good to go.

the survivalists are armed
with only a knife,

Fire starter and a pot.

And then I've got the map.

Tommy:
look like we're going to have
to go up and over,

Get close to the water,
not too close.

That sounds good.

Leah and tommy must scramble up

Extremely steep terrain

And then descend
into a valley below

In order to reach a water source
and find a shelter area.

Here's some bamboo.oh, yeah, cool.

Heck yeah, thank you.

Just in case we do come
across a snake or...

Yep, sure. Thank you.

A variety of venomous snakes
camouflage themselves

Beneath the jungle floor,
such as the fer-de-lance,

Whose potent venom
could k*ll 32 humans.

The dense jungle also provides
cover for the deadly puma,

Whose powerful hind legs
and long claws serve

To k*ll larger prey.

These mountains right here,
these are some mountains.

It's not stopping.

I'm like, "oh, here we are.
No, we're not. Keep going up."

It's important, obviously,
for us to have a fire

Because the temperatures
dip here.

Definitely.

Yeah, and I'm a weenie
in the cold.

I definitely hope we find water
pretty quick...

Me, too.

...especially with
this altitude...

Yes.
...physical exertion.

Oh, yes.

At high elevations,

The body perspires twice
as much as at sea level,

Making the risk of dehydration
significantly higher.

We're definitely headed
downhill now.

Yeah.
It's super steep.

I can hear some water down here,
too, so...

...possibly a place to set up
shop for a few weeks.

That's right.

Geez.
Just fyi, it's straight down.

Definitely have to use
the trees to hold on.

I guess I had something else

Like, it's the toughest terrain
I've seen in a long time.

Man, it's getting worse.

Look, I'm seeing three, four,
five big groups

Of bamboo right there.that's awesome.

Tommy: it was a pretty hefty run
coming in here,

But we're here, hot,

Tired, extremely thirsty,
but we're getting settled in.

We're going to get a shelter up,
at least get a platform bed up,

Get a fire going,
get some water,

And then we can get really
kicked off tomorrow

And make the best of this.

Woo, nice!

We're just going to take
some bamboo,

Hanker it onto
some of the standing bamboo

And just create
a platform for tonight,

Get us up off the ground.

Leah: because the light
is going down,

We're trying to get
our cordage from vines,

And then we'll take this and
use it to tie the bamboo down

So we can make our platform.

-These flies are k*lling me.
-k*lling you?

I mean, look.

Oh, why are they so bad?

Yeah, I may go down
to the water again

And wash all these daggone flies
off, smear some mud on.

Yeah, yeah.i actually am going to do that.

Okay.

The bugs are
absolutely relentless.

I am completely covered.

My legs are, you know,
a different color,

Just from the amount
of bugs and gnats.

Narrator: chitras,
also known as sand flies,

Swarm in the thousands.

These relentless
blood-sucking insects

Carry a parasite
causing leishmaniasis,

A potentially fatal disease.

Just going to cake on some mud,

Put another layer
between my skin and the bugs.

It's impressive.
It's a wake-up call, no doubt.

But at the same time,
your attitude in any challenge

Is your most important
survival skill,

And I never let anything
get me down.

Leah: I'm definitely happy
with my partner.

He's got some awesome skills,
but I feel creeped out.

I'm not going to lie.

I'm not a night person,

So I'm not a huge fan
of the night

And especially
if it's going to be cold.

I don't like the cold.

I'm really bummed about not
having the fire going yet.

So it's all we can do for now
is try to get that going still.

Tommy: leah seems
extremely energetic,

But also a phenomenal amount
of stress and nervousness.

I guess I got my nerves going
because we have fire

To make still, which is super
important for tonight.

Yeah,
this is going to be...

It's going to be rough.

It's going to be
really rough.

It is what it is.

Early in the evening,
on day 1,

We at least got a platform
built to sleep on,

And so we're going to try
to make a fire, or leah is.

-Yeah.
-I'm supervising.

It made a flame,
but it just didn't burn.

I know.

-I will.
-Okay.

We got it.

Good.

Yeah, bring it --

I'm going to go get the pot
and get it on the fire.

Tommy lit the fire.

It's awesome.

Finally, night one,
we have shelter,

Or at least a platform,
and we have fire.

Tommy did it.
He's the man.

Leah, you feel better?

Yeah, I feel really better.

Narrator:
as night falls and the cloud
cover settles, cold air

Is trapped within the canopy,

Causing extreme
temperature drops.

Oh, that's uncomfortable.

This is going
to be horrible.

-Yeah.
-What the *bleep* are we doing?

This is freezing.
Oh *bleep*.

The fire isn't
helping at all.

Oh, my god,
it's so *bleep* cold.

This is *bleep* ridiculous.

Leah: I'm feeling really tired
right now,

And I'll be honest, like,
the night

Was kind of a k*ller for me.

It's early in the morning
after night one.

It's been pretty much hell
all night

Because of the core
temperatures,

And let me tell you,
this is not something

That either of us expected.

♪♪

Leah:
come on, sunshine.

You're going to make me
happy today.

I'm not feeling warmth at all
in the jungle.

I'm really --
I'm really upset about the sun.

Oh, it'll be out.

It's still pretty early.

Is it? Okay.
Yeah.

Tommy:
first night in the jungle,

The platform,
it didn't work out.

It was phenomenally
uncomfortable.

The air was a lot cooler
than we had anticipated.

We're a lot higher elevation
than we realized we would be.

Yeah, it's not getting
any warmer.

Okay.
I know, sorry.

That's my complaint
for the day.

Where's the sun?

My partner, leah,

She's struggling
with the cold.

There's only so much
you can take

Before you have to just
change your plan.

So we're going to go
with a modified

A-frame slash debris shelter
big enough for two people,

One that we could close off,
protect ourself from the wind

And, you know, make it as easy
as we can for her

To get through tonight,
see how that works for us.

Damn fire, I mean, it keeps,
like, going out.

I just want
to stay warmer.

Leah: I just want this to work,
like,

I want the effort
to equate to something.

Less thinking, more doing.okay.

Leah, one step at a time.

I'm trying not to be a negative
ninny about the sun,

But it's, like,
it's getting cold.

I'm really trying to stay
focused, stay concentrated.

You know, it's a team effort.

When you've got a partner
that is struggling in one area,

You pick up where you can.

Narrator: with no protection
from the elements,

Leah is losing
body heat rapidly.

Her extremities are cooling,
which in turn chills her blood,

Dropping her core temperature
to dangerous levels.

I just don't know
what to do.

If you need to, like, lay down
and take a breather,

I don't blame you.

The night hasn't even come,
and I'm already pretty cold,

And I don't see it
getting any better.

All right.

I'm cold, man.
This sucks.

I knew that it would
be hard for me.

The wind hasn't even started
blowing yet.

I've always known that I don't
do well in situations

Where I'm cold,
so I just don't know what to do.

Okay, so I'm not terribly keen
on staying

Because I am freezing,
like, I'm cold.

I think it's kicking my a*s
pretty bad.

Well, I mean, obviously
I want you to stay.

I know.

There's always that one thing
that gets to people.

If you want
to try to stay,

We can do anything
and everything we can.

I don't know. I don't even know
what to say anymore.

I ain't going to hold it
against you.

I kind of figured out that I
just made a mistake to do this,

At this point in my life,
and I thought I could handle it,

But I'm going to check out.

What's going on?

I'm ready
to head out and leave.

So you are tapping out?

I am tapping out, yes.

I thought that I could do this.

I was pretty confident,
but the jungle is --

It's not a joke at all,
and it's tougher than it looks.

Narrator:
after only one night in
the mountainous jungle of minca,

Leah is overwhelmed
by the environment

And abandons
the challenge,

Leaving tommy to face
the next 19 days alone.

As a result, her psr drops
from 6.2 to 3.2.

Pretty crappy, a partner
quitting on you on day 2

On a 21-day challenge.

You know, it came out
of nowhere, it seemed like,

And it's kind of sinking
in that, okay,

I'm literally
in a jungle by myself,

About to tough this out alone.

♪♪

First night out here
without a partner,

It's definitely pretty cold.

All I can do is sit here.

I've got the fire going.

I'm just holed up in my shelter,
trying to keep myself warm,

And without that extra
body heat, it's cold.

Really I think the only thing
that would help me at this point

Is a sleeping bag,
which is something I don't have.

♪♪

♪♪

There is something walking
in the woods around me.

I don't know what it is.

Being the hunter that I am,
I can tell it's four feet,

But I can't see anything
through this pitch black.

I don't see anything.

All I can do is keep
my fire going.

That's what I'm doing.

♪♪

Tommy:
so I spent my first night alone,

Without leah, in the shelter
that we built for two people

And, you know,
you cram one person in there,

It's just not as effective
at holding the heat in.

But I'm going to get through it
and, you know,

Adjust my game plan
from two players

In this challenge to one,

And figure out
what I have to do to survive.

So I'm just trying to get
some of this green bamboo

Cut to certain lengths
to help me

With a reflector wall,

Help block my shelter
from the wind,

Help hold the heat
from the fire in.

♪♪

I hammered in four stakes,
and I put the bamboo

In between them,
built it up four levels high,

Tied the stakes together
to stabilize them

And hopefully kind of keep it

A little warmer, allow me to get
a little more sleep at night.

The bugs are terrible
today, too.

My feet are getting poked,
and my giblets are getting bit.

♪♪

These little freaking chitras,

These little mosquito biting
things that are just terrible.

Ah, you can't move without
a just swarm of them,

Especially when you have
no clothes on

And you look like
a giant chicken nugget.

And they're not just simple
building bites.

These things bruise,
and they don't just itch.

They hurt, and then they itch,

And god forbid you actually
scratch it

Because then you can't stop.

Narrator:
the dozens of bug bites
and incessant cold

Are forcing tommy's
immune system

To work even harder to defend
against illness and infection.

He's burning through his energy
reserves,

And food is now
becoming a priority.

♪♪

Oh, man.

Passion berries.

This right here is a huge find.

This, mm, sour, very sweet taste
to them, very good.

You know, berries and fruits
and things like that

Are pretty high in vitamin c,

Which, out here,
is very beneficial.

Oh, ha, not to mention
when I set my snares up,

This will be excellent bait.

I'm telling you if I could snare
an armadillo or something,

Cook it up
I'd be eating like a king.

I am not alone tonight.

I have a little friend
up in the trees,

A little howler monkey.

Unfortunately for him,
I don't have any food to steal,

So I'm good in that area.

You know you're definitely
in the jungle

When you get to chat
with a howler monkey.

This don't happen in alabama.

Narrator: howler monkeys are
territorial by nature.

They use their intimidating
howls to call

In an army of monkeys
from up to 3 miles away

To defend against an intruder.

So, yeah, all the howler monkeys
are back.

The one that was here earlier,

Plus it looks like
he brought his family with him.

I guess they're
checking me out to see

Who the other naked primate
is that's on their turf.

Right now, I can count four
or five, six of them,

A whole family of howler monkeys
above my head.

♪♪

It's still the middle
of the night.

The wind has picked up

Just dramatically,
and I'm the only one here.

So I'm having to huddle up
against one side,

Just to get as much protection
from this wind as I can.

It's bending these bamboos.

I mean, it's, I mean, really
terrifying because you look up,

And you think they're going
to come down on your head.

It looks like I have
some company this morning.

The howler monkeys
are coming to play.

You took a big old dump,
didn't you?

So looks like he's trying
to take a *bleep* on me.

I got crapped on all night
by the wind, the cold, and then,

You know, monkeys come and
try to take a dump on my head.

♪♪

The plan today,
I'm going to find ways

To start going after
some protein.

I'm making this cordage
out of this palm.

I've just been braiding
the palm together

And, I mean,
this is thin, thin.

I'm making it thin for a snare,
but you can see

How strong it is,
very strong.

It's going to hold any kind
of animal it catches.

I need that protein.

I definitely know I won't
get anything if I don't try.

I'm going to go across
the little stream here

And out in the woods,
see if I can find some burrows

Where I can set up snares.

Ah, if you look at the ground
right here,

There's been
a lot of activity.

There's definitely been
some animal movement in here.

Under these rocks,
it's not an old one,

Pretty fresh, good find.

So what I'm going to do
is put a snare up right here.

So I'm just tying it off
to the tree.

That's going to be my spring.

It's going to kind of pick up
on the animal

Whenever it triggers the snare.

So what's going to happen,

The animal is going to walk
right over here.

It's going to step
right in my snare,

And it's going to trigger it.

So snare is set.

Oh, hey, hey, hey, hey.

Chopping this wood,
and I just come across

A real good little gem,
big old grub.

I'm just going to roast him
for a second,

Get him nice and crispy,
and I'm going to eat this joker.

Narrator: for it's size,
the wood-boring grub packs

A nice protein punch
of 75 calories.

It's also high in fatty acids,

Which help regulate liver
function and mental awareness.

Completely unique texture,
I was not expecting that.

Not bad, very woody, obviously.

They eat wood,
so very woody flavor.

But, hey,
beggars can't be choosers.

It's a good day.

I can already feel
the temperature dropping.

Pretty certain it's going to be
a very cold and long night,

But we'll get through it.

The wind is blowing like crazy,
and I'm already shivering.

It's cold.

The wind is blowing
insanely hard.

It's freezing cold.

Bamboo is breaking
all around me.

Oh, *bleep*

Tommy: ah, no.

If I got any chance,
it's going to be inside here.

It's cold.

It was extremely windy
last night.

There's bamboo broken all over,
one right above my head.

This bamboo is 30, 40,
50 feet high.

It's falling with
some significant force.

I mean, it could hurt
or k*ll very easily.

I'm freezing.

It's just still
so freaking cold out.

This is my coldest morning yet.

Narrator:
six days into the challenge,

Tommy's core temperature
continues to drop,

And the lack of protein is
affecting his serotonin levels,

The chemical that helps
regulate mood.

Tommy:
I miss my wife and my girls
like crazy, I do.

Oh, you know,
I try to put them to the side.

That way it don't consume
my thoughts

And I don't break,
but it's hard.

I mean, it's really hard,
when you just, you know,

You've got those people
that you love so much.

I want to give a shout out
to my little girls.

I...love...you.

I've done very, very well with
passion berries, which is great,

But I'm reaching that point
where I need protein.

So just going to go check
the snare real quick,

Maybe try to move up the stream
a little bit and check the banks

For any kind of food source
or anything like that.

Ow!

♪♪

All right. So the snare
has not been tripped.

I mean, right now,
the only animal activity

I'm seeing
are the monkeys, really.

In all honesty, I haven't seen
very many snakes,

Which is very surprising to me.

I'm looking up, just, you know,
just in case

I see a tree
snake up in the tree.

I haven't seen anything.

I don't know.

Looks like the monkeys
are following me again,

Making sure I don't get into
anything I ain't supposed to.

Maybe they're taking my food.

So I see this
is obviously dug out

Underneath this large root here.

That does look fairly fresh
to me.

So we'll try to smoke it out.

I hope it's either an agouti
or a armadillo.

That'd be like eating
a whole turkey dinner.

What I'm going to do before
I smoke it out

Is I'm going to walk around
and see if there's another exit,

Another entrance
to this burrow

That I need
to block off or watch.

Narrator:
a burrow contains a network
of tunnels that lead to exits.

By blocking all of them,
the animal is forced to escape

Through the only opening
in order to avoid the smoke.

I'm getting quite a bit of
this smoke and stuff in here.

I'm not seeing
anything rush out.

If anything was home,
it would have

Came out with that much smoke.

A lot of time,
a lot of energy wasted.

♪♪

♪♪

The days are taking forever now.

Honestly, I've never been
alone this long.

If I could tell my girls
anything, it would be this:

You are what gives me
the strength to do this.

There's not a moment that goes
by I don't think about you.

♪♪

It is very easy to get caught up
in your own thoughts.

It's very easy for those
thoughts to go negative.

I'll say the middle side of this

Is the hardest part
of this challenge.

♪♪

This is insane.

You know, I don't care what
other people think about me.

Obviously, I'm naked on tv,
and I'm not an attractive guy.

But, you know, I don't want
to have been away from my wife

And girls this long
to quit now.

♪♪

♪♪

You know,
I'm pushing the boundaries

Of being malnourished,
so a good score with, you know,

Something with a lot of meat
is very crucial

If I'm going to make it
to 21 days.

So snare has not been triggered,

But we're going to
leave it in place.

♪♪

There is something
walking out here.

It's pretty big,
obviously has four legs.

I'm guessing
that it's probably a cat,

Which means it's more
than likely a puma.

The only thing I can do is
pretty much stay in my shelter.

I've got my machete right here
just in case he gets too close.

Get out of here, cat.

Ah!

Out here, the chitras and
the flies are a constant thing,

So having a fly swatter
is a must.

I'm going to show you
how to make one.

First you find one of these
groups of palm leaves,

Then you look for the ones
that haven't blossomed open yet,

Pull them up.

First great thing is they have
about an inch

Of the heart of palm
at the bottom that you can eat.

Second, you just kind of give it
a good little twist,

And then you just whip,
and you have a fly swatter,

A must-have in the jungle
when you have no clothes.

Tommy: I'm tired.
I'm fatigued.

I got a lot
of sleep deprivation going.

You know, I'm definitely
in a massive,

Massive caloric deficit.

Narrator: tommy has only
consumed berries,

Heart of palm
and a grub in the last 19 days.

Tommy: if I don't
find some protein,

My body is going to start
consuming my own muscle.

Anytime things get tough
or rough or hard,

To, you know,
try to push myself through,

I think of my wife
and my kids, you know.

What example am I setting
for my daughters?

Monkeys, right there.

I guess they just watching to
see if I got anything to eat.

I can't come out here without
these things watching me.

Oh, my god.
Look, look, look up here.

I got a nice size
snake up there.

Oh, he's a beauty.

I am going to have to figure out
a way to get him down.

Tree snakes definitely
have a strong powerful bite.

Narrator:
some tree snakes are known
for their aggressive

And extremely fast movement,

Striking numerous times
within seconds.

Come on, baby.

Oh, my god.

What a score.

Let's go ahead
and cut his head off.

Let's look at this.

Without the head,

This guy is over 6 feet long.

It's a phenomenal
amount of protein.

Oh, my god.

This right here
is just going to get my body

Like a fountain of youth.

Whoo-hoo!

I'm just so damn hungry,
