Like, I'm really here.

It's a crazy,
once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tim: just taking it all in,
looking around,

See what I can see.

Just kind of overwhelmed with it
right now.

Narrator: tim and kaiela
are heading deep

Into the northern region
of south africa...

To a desolate savannah
called vhembe.

During the winter,
there is no rain for months,

Forcing animals
to travel for miles

In 95-degree heat

And locate small pools of water
before they evaporate.

Africa's most feared predators
haunt at these watering holes.

Lions can leap on their prey
from 36 feet.

Hyenas, the lions' only enemy,
travel in clans of 80

And have the most powerful jaws
in the animal kingdom,

Arming them with
a vicious weapon

That can crush the bones of
animals four times their size.

Tim: two minutes ago,
it was nice and green.

Now it's almost like
it's a desert.

It's like every quarter mile
is a whole different ecosystem.

Narrator:
to stay alive,

Ancient tribes that once
populated this area

Adopted a nomadic lifestyle
following seasonal game

And scarce resources across
the punishing diverse landscape.

I've never been in a place
that's been so untouched.

Kind of nerve-racking.

I work at a local
motorcycle shop.

Riding motorcycles for me
brings me closer to nature.

I'm always chasing
my next adventure.

So I had to get
a little creative

On how to toughen up my feet
for south africa.

I got a pan of rocks and gravel.

Hot, hot, hot.

But even when I was little,
I was constantly outside,

Building forts,
playing in the trees.

My dad taught me how to fish,

And ever since then,
it's been a big passion of mine.

I've always doubted myself,

And I think doing something
like this is gonna give me

A lot more confidence
and make me a stronger person.

You have to go through
tough *bleep* to be tough.

I'm super excited to be here,
but I'm also...super nervous.

Narrator:
as an avid biker,

Kaiela brings her sense
of adventure to the challenge.

She also comes in with solid

Fishing
and shelter-building skills,

But her inner critic
could work against her

In this
already brutal environment.

Her primitive survival rating,
or psr, is set at 6.3.

Tim:
the not-knowing part.

If I go around the corner,

Is the landscape

Have to focus on something
totally different.

I'm a little nervous about that,
actually.

So I'm in my shop today.

Right now,
I'm skinning raccoons.

Uh, kind of hope
it don't ruin your lunch.

I am a wild fur dealer.

Muskrats all counted up.

Got 500 or 600 raccoons
back there, ready to go.

The type of survivalist I am
is definitely a thriver,

Making fires and building
shelters out in the woods.

I am most confident
with my hunting.

I've been sh**ting bows
since I was 8, 9 years old.

I'm deadly with a bow.

I'm getting older now.
I'm in my 50s.

I've probably got
10 good years in me,

You know, to actually
do something with

Before I start breaking down
as an old man.

So I'm doing this challenge,

But I want to push myself
all the way to the limit.

And don't leave nothing
on table.

That's what I want to do.

hunting and trapping experience

To help stay hydrated

With the scarce
water sources available.

Looks like

So it looks like our extraction
is way down here.

a long drive from here.

I would say 20 miles
in 21 days.

Just slowly make our way
towards extraction.

We might have
a couple different camps.

We're going to have
multiple camps,

With like a week
at each one.

In the next 21 days,

Tim and kaiela
will have to cover 21 miles,

Relying on
three sources of water

Where dangerous predators hunt
to get to their extraction.

They'll have to walk across
scorching rocks and hot sand

That can heat
to well over 150 degrees,

Hot enough to cause
third-degree burns.

We had a hyena
literally like

Right outside of our shelter
last night.

That the hyena last night

Was willing to get so close
to our boma.

but it doesn't get real

that close to you.

So it's pretty scary.

Our feet are tore up,
so next on my agenda is shoes.

That's really important for us.

If we don't have our feet
out here,

We're not going to
get anything done.

I got to get all this fat
off of this.

Tim: we got three more trucks
in this challenge.

It's going to be
really critical to make shoes

Because I know
it's gonna be rough.

This is what's called fleshing.

It's taking all the membrane
you need off.

You got to scrape this off to
get down to the actual skin,

Which the skin
will turn to leather.

That's so nasty.

Over the years,
as a wild fur dealer,

I've learned how to tan hides
to soften them up.

I do this stuff
with fresh animals,

Not stuff that's been around
for a while.

Ugh.

It's gonna have to dry.

Let it out the sun
just for a little bit.

Last night,
it was quiet.

and try to get a bird.

since we've been out here,

So we need to try
to get something in us.

We have a long journey
ahead of us.

to the boma.

what's right outside your door.

Knowing that we're so close
to lions.

There's not a fence
protecting us from a lion.

We're not at the zoo.
We're out here in its territory.

We're competing with them
for food.

It kind of makes the hair
on the back of your neck

Most times, you lose.

I am trying to noodle.

a method of catfishing.

People stick their hands in

The only thing I've been
intaking right now is water.

We know we have
a really long journey,

to get some protein.

As the days go on.

tell the difference.

Since we've been out here.

Our boma
is no longer safe.

We've haven't had
the greatest luck here,

And it's kind of
getting to us.

we're not catching anything.

I'm so exhausted
from lack of food.

We're making sun hats because we
know the sun out here is brutal.

to protect us from the predators

With a coal from our fire

With a tripod to hold it
so our hands don't get hot.

But we need
to get our boma made.

At kaiela and tim's new location

Will provide protection
from the large predators,

But lurking in the crevices
are deadly snakes,

Over 160 species of scorpions,

And venomous spiders
such as the golden orb

And the violin spider,
whose bite can cause necrosis,

Making it one of
the most dangerous arachnids

In the world.

We're racing the sun right now.

We have to have this built
and firewood for sunset

In order to stay safe out here.

It's perfect.

It's definitely
the safest place for us.

trek of their migration --

Eight miles through
tree-covered ambush territory

Over steep, rocky terrain.

Kaiela: I cannot imagine
doing this without shoes.

Tim: I'm really keeping an eye
on kaiela.

I was really worried about her.

I know she's not
used to the heat.

She just needs to get
some more water in her.

Kaiela: oh.

Largest water source so far.

It will attract more prey
such as impala and wildebeest,

But it also makes it
prime hunting ground

For lions and leopards.

We made it.

This place
is absolutely stunning.

Couldn't ask for a better
situation than we're in.

That was worth
the walk.

But we desperately need
to make up for calories we lost.

I like the location.

I do, too.
In a flat plain.

Get to see everything.

'cause it has a roof,

And we got one side
already pretty much done.

Moving from our last location
to here was really tough

Not only physically
but mentally.

We'll get all the logs
we can

And build our walls
with them.

Since we're moving locations
so often,

We're having to relearn an area

And figure out
how that area works.

Take one last drink.

It's crazy that we're
pushing our bodies like this

On the limited calories
that we've had.

We need to start eating anything
we can get our hands on.

Tim: since we've been out here,
we haven't eaten for two days.

If we don't get
something to eat,

We're gonna starve.

Getting a meal out of that pond

Is what I'm looking for
right now.

of walking,

And it could be
an issue here,

You know, knowing we've got,
what, 48 hours or so.

at a really bad time.

So, we are here.

Looks like we're gonna be
following a riverbed again.

absolutely treacherous.

their 21-mile migration,

Tim and kaiela
still need to make it across

Five miles of hot sand
and steep mountain terrain.

But after 20 days
of nomadic survival,

They are now weak
and slow to react,

Making them easy prey
for the area's deadly predators.

I got a thorn.

Popped my *bleep* blister.

It's leaking.

Kaiela: every step that I take,
I can feel my shoes digging in.

Tim: ouch.
How'd that feel, huh?

Tim: I'm definitely worried
about my partner.

She may say she's okay,
but I know she's not.

I'm gonna help her out.

There is no giving up.
We can make this together.

It just might take us
a little longer.
