This is definitely
one of the crazier things

I've done for our marriage,
I think. Right?

Yeah, yeah, I'd say it's one of
the crazier or craziest.

I'm just really excited
to be able to do it with you.

I cannot believe
you talked me into this.

♪♪

Narrator:
for the first time ever,

A married couple
with limited survival skills...

-Put my knife in place...
-...will attempt

The "naked and afraid"
14-day fan challenge.

Anna: it's a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity as a couple.

You're thrown into
the middle of the wilderness

With minimal resources,
and you have to work together.

God almighty.
Ugh!

Jered: definitely the ultimate
test of our relationship.

I'm done.
It's not gonna work.

I just don't want to sleep
another night, like, freezing.

Jered: it was my wife's idea,
so I hope I don't regret it.

Jered?

Narrator: will the challenge
bring them closer together...

-It's game over.
-...or tear them apart?

Jered: it's game over.

Anna: oh, don't use your dirty
knife to get it out.

That's how you get an infection.

I am a fan, and it's
a huge dream of mine

To be able to be on the show,

Especially with my best friend
and life partner.

If the water was that dirty,
I'd want to boil it just,

Like, I think 10 minutes.
-Right.

I've been
a fan of the show

Since my wife
converted me.

But man, I never thought
that I would be here,

And here I am.

That's really clever --
you fail

And you succeed together.
-Mm-hmm.

Anna:
practicing getting our feet
all toughened up.

When it comes to our skills.

That's a big fish!

You're outside,
outdoors all the time.

We've been hiking, camping,
hunting, fishing.

We're not
primitive survivalists,

But we are very familiar
with the outdoors.

You okay?
-Yep.

Our strengths and weaknesses
really complement each other.

That's kind of
how our marriage works.

Whatever structure you build,

You just want it
to be waterproof.

One of anna's great strengths
is being brazen and taking risks

And pushing herself in ways
that I usually would not.

I'm more of a thinker
and a planner.

So, as that pile gets hit
with a spark,

The whole thing
will light off.

-Okay.
-He does have a tendency

To focus sometimes
on the little details.

Even if
it's really small,

He gets super worked up
about it.

She does
a really good job

Of helping me bring it back
to the big picture

And making sure that
we're really being effective.

I am making cordage right now.

As a team, I know we're
going to take

Really good care
of each other.

We're gonna do this together,
and we're gonna finish together.

If you succeed, I succeed
and vice versa.

Right now it looks kind of
like a tropical paradise.

Looks like paradise, but
we'll see what it actually is

Once we get in there
and get our hands dirty.

Narrator: off the coast of
the philippines' palawan island,

New agutaya
is a dense jungle crawling

With highly venomous snakes
and territorial wild boar.

The boar roam the jungle
in packs

And can impale their attackers

With a thrust
of their sharp tusks.

You know, we know
it's not going to be easy.

This is a dangerous
environment.

Yeah, looking around,
I don't know what's hiding

In here
under rocks, under trees.

Those are the things
I'm worried about.

Monitor lizards weighing up
to 200 pounds can tear flesh

And crush bone with a whip
of their sharp club-like tails.

But the biggest threat here
is the extremes in temperature.

Daytime highs in the 90s
can plummet

To the mid-50s at night,
and the high humidity

Can make the nights
feel 10 degrees colder.

This is insane.

Jered: the personality trait

That I'm bringing
to this challenge

Is my ability to work out
the details on the fly.

Narrator:
jered's outdoor experience
will be an asset out here,

But his impatience
could work against him.

His primitive survival rating,
or psr,

Is set at 5.5.

I'm a little bit nervous
now that we're actually here,

But mostly excited.
I'm ready to get out there.

Narrator: anna is resourceful
and calm under pressure,

But she's never been tested in
an environment this unforgiving.

Anna's psr is also set at 5.5.

All right,

Anna: the naked thing takes the
challenge a little bit further.

Not like, "oh, I'm going
to be naked on t.v."

Yeah. But now that I've seen
the environment,

I'm a little bit worried about
doing this challenge naked.

-Looking good.

You ready for this.
-Yeah, let's do it.

-It's pretty hot.
-Yeah.

Anna:
that's the truth.

I see bags.

Oh, there we go.

Awesome.
Climbing rope.

And I'm going to use
this for snares and traps.

I've got
my bolo knife.

Here's the firestarter.

You're gonna hang on to that
so I don't lose it.

So what else
you got in your bag?

-I have the map!
-Awesome.

So we are here.

There's our water source.

And where the bamboo is
and the boars.

So we're going to have to go
over all of these mountain...

This whole mountain range
right here to get there.

It's still gonna be
a lot of uphill hiking.

Yeah. I don't think we
have a choice, though.

Yeah. It's gonna be
probably that way.

Okay. You ready?
-Yeah.

♪♪

A lot of thorns.
Respect the pump.

Yeah, be really careful
around those.

Those will be nice
on our feet. Ooh.

Jered: you really got to pay
attention to the thorns.

We've seen a lot of it, and you
don't wanna step on it.

-Oh, crap, I missed it.
-What happened?

Anna:
I got hit with a good thorn.

Oh, it is bleeding quite a bit.
-Is it still in there?

Anna:
no, it came right out.

Gosh, I'm glad we did
harden up our feet.

Can you imagine how much worse
this would be?

Jered:
yeah, no kidding.

Anna:
from a fan's perspective,

It's really fun
to watch the show on t.v.

It is a totally different thing
being out here

And experiencing it
for ourselves.

In one way,
it's a little bit scary,

But in another,
it's kind of amazing.

All right. So, I think
we're gonna go up this way.

Jered:
yeah. This is where
the incline starts.

Anna: there's some roots
that you can grab onto.

Careful, careful,
that's not super secure.

-Okay. Oh, keep going.
-Okay.

-Nice job, baby.
-Thank you. You, too.

Anna:
okay, this is, like, really
densely covered in leaves.

This is where, like, all the
creepy crawlers

Are going to be lurking.

Jered:
my biggest concern is we haven't
seen any snakes,

Which is a good thing,
but that's still on my mind.

Narrator:
this jungle is home to dozens
of poisonous snakes,

Including the spitting cobra

That can project neurotoxic
venom from their fangs

Causing respiratory failure
in less than 30 minutes.

How about you keep
your eyes on the ground

And I'll keep my eyes above?
-That's a good idea.

You look for snakes above,
I'll look for snakes below.

Yeah, I'll look
for snakes in the trees,

You look for snakes
on the ground.

There's an animal hole
right here, see it?

-That might be a cobra hole.
-Careful.

Anna: oh, my gosh.
It gets like 20 degrees hotter

When the sun comes out
from behind the clouds.

We're already
sweating pretty hard.

Jered:
I'm really thirsty.

Anna: definitely makes me
a little bit nervous

Because I know we're losing
a lot of moisture right now

While we're sweating.

Narrator: in dense jungle,

The body can lose up to
three liters of water per hour

Causing severe dehydration.

Anna: we're not going to drink
dirty water

-Not gonna drink dirty water,
-i'd rather be thirsty.

We're definitely
going to purify it.

Are we going the right way?
-I think so.

Jered:
if you don't have a pot
to boil water...

Anna:
maybe we can put some bamboo
and make a bamboo water cup.

Oh, butterfly.
How pretty.

Oh, water.
There we go.

-Water!
-Awesome.

Ahh!

Let's get down there.

Oh, that feels nice.

We want to drink it,
already.

Yeah.

No, jered, no, don't drink it
unless it's been purified.

-All right. Purify it first.
-It was a trick question!

Jered: we're not
dehydrated quite yet,

But I'd like
to get water boiled

By the time
that we choose our campsite.

Anna:
camp would be nice to
find some flat ground.

How far from the river do
you think we should go, baby?

Jered:
I'd say 100 yards.

-Like up here?
-Yeah.

Close enough to water, animals
up there, right over here.

Plan for this evening is to get
a raised platform and a bed.

We just wanted to be
up above the ground

So that we didn't have to worry
about snakes getting

In our bed with us,

And if we can do that,
then, that's progress.

Anna: look at you!
Regular wild man.

Baby, I'm afraid that you're
overworking yourself already.

I'm really okay.

Anna: one of my only pet peeves
in our relationship

Is that jered is
such a strong person

When he has to rise to an
occasion.

I see it every day, but I hope
that that doesn't end up,

You know, inducing some
exhaustion-induced crankiness

That could view weakness.

I'm hoping that we don't
have to face that.

And if we do,
that we are good

At our conflict resolution
in that situation.

Okay. Start setting up
the frame.

The ground
is really hard.

Jered:
I am really, really thirsty.

It's a lot harder
than it looks on t.v., Huh?

No, it's so easy.

Jered:
super wobbly, but we could
probably sleep on it tonight.

Bamboo bed. A little rolly,
but that's okay.

Yeah, it's
a little rolly.

Let's see if we can both sit on
it without it breaking.

That's the best.
Okay.

-You wanna lay down?
-Yeah. Okay.

How do you feel?
-Really dehydrated and

That makes me really nervous at
the end of day 1.

I'm gonna try working
on the fire

Before it gets
completely dark, okay?

Okay.
Right now I'm just thirsty,

And I was stupid
and overworked myself

And sweated out
most of my water content,

So that's why
I'm frustrated right now.

Anna:
so I'm going to try
to get a fire going

So we can get
some water boiled

So that he doesn't
end up dehydrated.

Jered: I just want
drinking water.

Anna: I really don't want jered
to regret coming out here.

Magnesium's
not lighting, huh?

Should work, right?

Like, we have
super dry tinder.

Like not even a spark.
This is nuts.

We don't get fire,
we can't purify water.

We don't get water, I'm not
going to last very long.

I don't know.
It does not make any sense.

I'm pretty lightheaded.
I'm just feeling it.

Anna:
where are you going?

I don't know.
What you want to do?

We're at a dead end here.

At the end of day 1,
we can't get fire started.

Jered:
I don't feel like I could go
another day without water.

What do you wanna do?

We gotta go try
to drink the water.

We don't
have another choice.

I don't want
to drink the water.

to take the risk.

I'm sorry. I don't want you
to take the risk either.

Then we can't stay out here.
It's game over.

No, jered, no.

I'll try to get this going.

I really don't know
what to do right now.

I'm not going to be able
to keep going.

Jered:
I'm really thirsty.

I've seen episodes where
they've taken a chance on water

That looks like this.

People get sick
and have to tap,

But I might just
have to risk it.

If this doesn't work,
we can't stay out here.

Nothing.

Here's to water.

Okay.
We'll see what happens.

I just drank dirty water.
-How do you feel?

I mean, I feel fine.
The water tastes fine.

It's really clear
and there's a lot of sand

And gravel in there.

It's frustrating because
I'm drinking dirty water,

Which is like the one thing
we said we wouldn't do.

So I'm worried that
he's going to get sick

Because I don't want to have
to do this alone.

Anna:
how is nothing lighting?

Ugh. sh**t.
Man, day 1.

Wow. We're so good
at what we do.

We are so confident.
Look at our skill.

Oh, sh**t.
I've got to poop.

Oh, god almighty.

Yeah?

That's probably
good, right?

Just had a nice poop,
and that was good.

Jered:
it's so not sturdy.

Anna: we made it
through night 1.

Jered: we did.

You still feeling okay after
drinking the water?

-I feel great.
-Okay.

Anna: jered's not showing
any symptoms of dysentery,

So I dive in head first

And drink
some of the water, too.

Jered:
I'm stuffed.

Let's not
overdo it, though.

The plan for today is to get
some solid shelter

That we don't have
to worry about.

I think this is
the last call.

It might be easier
if we had a quad base.

For sure.

What if we tied it off from here
to here and then here...

-Oh, yeah.
-...and then here.

It's four pieces,
and we can just rest it

Right on top of these.

Jered: we're just doing a raised
platform with a quad base.

It's just making a far more
structurally sound base

For our raised platform.
-It feels really good.

Jered: it's going to be
way more secure.

And then we'll take
the same bamboo

That we slept on last night
and we'll lay it across

And then we'll work
on constructing a roof

And siding and weatherproofing.

Anna: we're weaving vines in so
that we have some good siding.

And then we're going
to reinforce the siding

With some nice big leaves.
-Nice job, baby.

Anna: good job to you.
You're amazing!

I think all things considered,
we're doing really well.

You'll see.

-Comfy?
-Uh-huh.

Jered:
it's like impossible
to sleep.

-I'm so cold.
-We need fire.

Ooh, it's just been
the longest night.

We're just
waiting it out.

You look chilly.

As soon as the sun
pops out of the sky,

We'll probably get a fire so
that we can be warm.

Jered: I feel like that's
plenty of tinder,

But maybe more magnesium,
as well.

Getting fire at this point
ought to be a little bit easier.

We have a lot more magnesium,

So I think that the key this
time is to start making fire

During midday
when it's the driest and hottest

And if that doesn't work,
we're in trouble.

Okay, wanna try it?

Jered:
it doesn't make sense
the tinder won't light.

That's the problem,
like, it won't light.

The tinder won't work.
Geez! Come on!

Anna: calm down.
It's okay.

It's not going to light.
It's not going to light.

We're gonna be out here
for 10 more days without fire.

Baby, baby, baby.

Like, not one of those
shavings actually caught.

I'm done.
It's not gonna work.

We have no fire
for the next 10 days.

Jered: the tinder pile
will not light.

What can we do?
There's just no fire,

Which means no food
for the next 10 days either,

Which means the only thing
we have is water,

And it's gonna be cold
as hell at night,

So I'm done.
It's not going to work.

-Really disappointing.
-This is really frustrating.

This is not good.
-I'm not super excited

About jered's attitude
right now.

It was my idea to do
this challenge with my husband,

So I'm just going to keep
working at it

And see what I can do.

Because I really don't want to
give up on this.

Jered: we're fans, we're not
professionals by any means.

Everything is just
so much easier

When you're in
a modern environment.

Nothing's working
like it should.

We spent
a ton of time on a shelter

That doesn't keep us
warm at night.

I know I agreed to do this
with anna because I love her,

But this sucks.

Anna:
I feel like this is my fault.

Jered: you okay?

With anna feeling down,
I do feel badly.

I just don't want to sleep
another night like freezing.

Jered: in our marriage
and in our relationship

To see her get upset over
something

That I'm not able to fix, it can
be especially frustrating.

I absolutely wish there was
a fire beside our shelter.

I don't know.
We're gonna finish this.

Jered: day 4.

Sun will be up in the next
30 minutes or so.

What a miserable night.

Anna: okay.

Jered: our plan right now
is very simple.

We really just want
to get fire.

Dead wood.

If we get fire,

We're good on two fronts --
we can sleep warm at night

And we can also start
looking for protein

Because I'm starting
to feel hungry,

So we really need fire
in order to make it.

the tinder here is different.

I just found this really,
really dry tinder

That kind of crumbles
into this powdery fine dust.

Jered: who knows?

Because when we do find food,

This will allow me to get after
it a little bit quicker.

Anna:
okay. We're already thinking
about that first real meal.

We have fire, which means now
we can start looking for food.

Anna:

Our bodies are definitely
craving energy,

And I'm feeling pretty tired.
-Yeah, definitely slowing down.

-Hey, husband?
-Yeah.

There's an animal
hole over here.

Awesome.
We can set a snare there.

Looks like there's like
fresh dirt around it.

I think there's a monitor
lizard in that burrow.

That would be an awesome meal.
-Yeah.

You wanna keep going?
What do you think?

Um, let's cross those rocks
right there and then go up.

Sure.

Anna:
there are like a lot of
little fish in here.

Jered:
that's going to be bait
for monitor lizard.

We can make a fish trap,
it ought to work, right?

-Yeah.
-Basically, at this point,

We know that there are fish
in that stream

And we know that there are
monitor lizards scurrying about.

We need to get that fish trap
if we want fish.

Really, the only reason
we're going for fish is

To bait the monitor lizard.

That's gonna be our
first big meal.

If we even get it.

Anna: so, we are at
the end of day 4,

And we're feeling
really good. Mm-hmm.

We're really starting
to get hungry tonight.

Tomorrow, our number 1
focus is food.

♪♪

Today is when
the hunger pangs

Are gonna really
set in, too, so...

So I think if we can get
some actual protein in us,

That's gonna help boost
our spirits a lot.

I'm making my version
of an active fish trap.

So I'll have two circular
pieces like this,

And then I'll take pieces of
bamboo and keep it really tight

And weave them in...

Jered: it kind of looks like
a bucket without a bottom.

And then you can just put it
right over them.

I have some pretty good
weaving skills,

But I've never made a fish trap,
and I don't know

If it's really going to work,
but we'll see how it goes.

I think this is our best
shot to get fish.

Yeah, it's really time
consuming,

But it's gonna be
nice to have.

Anna: as I was making it,
I realized just how difficult

It was going to be.

The day's almost gone.

This is probably going
to be something

You have
to finish tomorrow.

♪♪

Jered: okay, while
you're doing this,

I'm might go ahead
and start making the trap.

I'm just going to set
a regular spring hold.

It's not baited,

So the chances that you're going
to catch something are low.

I'm about to go throw up a
really simple spring-pull snare

Because that monitor lizard
would make a big difference

Because we could really use
a solid protein meal.

Narrator:
jared's spring snare is set

By staking a trigger
into the ground with a noose.

The trigger is held together
by two pieces of notched wood.

When the animal steps
into the noose,

It releases the trigger,
capturing the animal.

That might work.
I'm a fan,

I'm not a professional,
but it looks right to me.

Hopefully this
catches something.

Anna: sorry, baby.

This project is like the fish
trap that never ends.

-It's all right.
-Almost finished.

Jered:
well, maybe we'll catch
a monitor lizard tonight.

Could be a great, right?
-Mm-hmm.

I'm so hungry.

Jered:
something's over there crashing
through the underbrush.

♪♪

The snare went off last night.

We're really hoping
that it's a monitor lizard.

Ah!
sh**t. Nothing.

That's really frustrating.

Maybe the monitor lizard
was too big for the snare

And so it didn't trap it.
Oh, man.

I'm just really frustrated,
and I didn't

Want to come out here
and starve for 14 days.

This hole is buried in.
Something set it off.

Jered:
we're doing everything exactly
like we've researched

And been taught,
and it's just not working.

Anna:
it's really disappointing.

I guess nothing really goes

To plan out here.
-It's okay.

I just need to be by
myself for a sec, okay?

Jered: I just feel worn out.
And I'm completely prepared

To just be miserable and suffer.

But I know that it's so
important for my relationship

With anna out here
to keep moving forward.

We got to keep trying things.
-We have to.

It's just like a more
intensified version

Of like, how things are at home.

Like, when jered's having
a rough day at work,

He gets a little more negative.

I'm so glad I'm
doing this with you.

But that's why we balance
each other so well is

Because as soon as his
positivity level goes down,

Mine kind of shoots up

So that I can encourage him
and be there for him.

That's marriage.

You know what's
going to stink?

-If this fish trap doesn't work.

Jered:
we have this fish trap

That is just basically going to
work by trapping the fish

In a circle.
Are we gonna be able

To reach in there
and grab them by hand?

I don't know.
We'll see

Here fishy, fishy,
fishy.

They're right
underneath you.

You got one in there?
-Not one.

-Any in there?
-No.

Jered: no.

Maybe they can see me
coming and they move.

Anna:
I know I need to get
some sustenance in me,

And it's a source of protein
right in front of us.

And it seems kind
of impossible to get.

Jered:
I'm not going to be able to
reach in there and grab a fish.

They'd be like trying to reach
into a fish tank

And grab a fish,
have you ever tried to do that?

It's not gonna work.

Anna: I spent four days of the
challenge making this fish trap.

And there's so much rocks
in the bottom of this riverbed

That even when
it is catching a fish

And the fish is big enough

That they're able
to swim right under

Because it's getting caught
on a rock.

Jered: I don't know.
It's a good idea.

I mean, same thing happened
with my snare, like I set it

And it went off,
and there's nothing in it.

Anna:
I hate this fish trap.

♪♪

I'm slowing down today.

You ready to
get some food today?

I don't know that I have
that much energy to explore.

Gotta keep looking
at the positives, right?

We have fire. We have water.
We'll be okay.

Jered: it's day 11
and still nothing to eat.

So at this point, we're
searching for food of any kind.

We're just gonna take
a walk up the stream

And see if we can
turn something up.

Anna:
my energy's really
waning.

We're really hungry.

Really hungry.

Jered:
I don't know. I can't really
think straight right now.

Definitely one of
the more important things

In between now and extraction

Is finding food
in order to make it

Through the rest of this
challenge.

We've just got to get
some food in us.

We're really starting to feel
the starvation.

Anna: I feel like I'm at
my lowest point right now

To have to complete
a 14-day survival challenge.

This is the hardest thing
I've ever done.

-Something will turn up.
-I'm hungry.

I'm not sleeping much at night.
I'm just restless

Because we're getting
closer to extraction.

Anna: I wonder if jered and I
have lost just a lot of weight

So we're feeling cold a lot more
than we have before.

Anna:
we're gonna be even
more tired

And hungry tomorrow,
you know?

Mm-hmm.

Anna: we need food to get us
through extraction.

We're both getting tired out,

And I realize that
kind of our thing is

That if we don't get
something right right away,

We often give up
and walk away.

You see anything?
-No.

Anna: but we're both learning
how to do this challenge.

Like, you have to persevere
and push through

Even if it's exhausting.

Maybe check close
to the bases of trees.

Okay.

And this is kind of
our final frontier

To see if we can find food.

It's a crab.

Hey, jered?
-Yeah?

I found what looks like
a freshly dead crab.

-Really?
-You know that means?

That means there's
more crabs out here, too.

Jered: yeah.
We're not super hopeful,

But we're going to give it
one last ditch effort

And see if we can
turn up some crabs.

Where'd you find
the dead crab?

Anna: it was like in between
a couple rocks in the water

-It was in the water, though?
-Kind of.

I could really use
some meat.

Same. I'd really love
to get some protein.

Any type.

Jered:
we're turning over rocks,

And we're not seeing anything.

And then we find a burrow.
Oh, I see one. I see one.

-So we're going to get...
-You got it. Got it.

Anna: oh, my gosh.
Freaking awesome.

Don't let it go.

-Holy crap.
-Got him.

Jered:
this close to extraction,

We are not going to stop
at anything

Until we get a meal's worth.

Last night was freaking scary.

We're getting ready for
extraction.

We're excited.

But there's still
a lot ahead of us.

We know we still have to
look out for each other.

Right through pit viper country
and get down to the stream

And then we're going
to cut right.

When we see the big log,
that's extraction.

And it also looks
like these inclines

Might be a little bit
steeper than insertion.

Yeah, it's going to cost
a lot of energy

That we don't have,
but we can do it.

we really need to be watching
out for snakes.

Anna:
yeah, be really careful.

Extraction is its own
challenge in itself.

There's still snakes, there's
still wildlife to contend with,

And we want to make sure that
we safeguard as much as possible

Because anything
can still happen.

-Straight ahead probably.

Narrator: to make it to
their extraction point,

Anna and jared must trek
through three miles of thick

And steep jungle terrain laden
with black palm thorns.

-Thorns.
-Ooh, yeah, more thorns.

Narrator: they must avoid
poisonous scorpions

And deadly philippine cobras,

Which will be difficult to spot
in this uneven terrain.

Watch out for snakes.

Anna: yeah, we need to be
hyper aware out here.

-Yeah.
-Careful, thorns. Oh, ow.

Jered: I see it now.

Anna: there we go.

-Got it.
-Yep..

Jered:
what do you wanna do?

Anna:
I want to keep going
because I feel like

my momentum, spike.

Jered: we're really out here

Is getting more difficult
in realizing how tired I am.

I absolutely believe
mental survival

Out in this type of situation

Jered: we need to stay focused
on moving forward.

And every time I step
on a rock, it gets me.

I believe it when I see

and physically exhausted.

until you actually encounter
hunger over an extended period

Of time, there's just no way
to fully understand what

It feels like to go through
an ordeal like this.

I feel really good.

I feel so incredibly lucky.

I did this
with my husband.

We definitely succeeded
in this challenge

Because we did it together.

I think that we reaffirmed
just how much we love each other

And how well we work together.

To doing it
