15x07 - Taste of Their Own Medicine

Post by bunniefuu »

My name is Janis,
I am a set medic

for Naked and Afraid.

I'm at Bush Camp.
Here's our go bag.

Emergency evacuation backboard.

My name is Viktor.
I'm a set medic

for Naked and Afraid.

And I'm probably one of
the biggest fans of the show.

It's on most of the time.

There has never been a
crew member to attempt

a 21 day challenge...

Until now.

In just a few short weeks,
I'm going to be embarking

on my own 21 day challenge.

I'm usually on set. Currently
I'm at home in South Africa

and I'm preparing for
my own 21 day challenge

in Guyana.

Oh, my God. [laughs]

Rock and roll.

Coming for you, Guyana.

[growls]

I'm really nervous.

Really excited.

Guyana, it's beautiful.
It's lush, but it's wet.

The rainy season
has definitely started

and I think she's going
to be a cruel mistress.

She's not going to be forgiving.

It is humid here
and it is buggy.

And we're already
getting eaten up a little bit.

I am very excited.
It's just gonna be

the hardest thing
I've ever done.

I'm here for a taste
of my own medicine.

[thunderclap]

[narrator] The rainy season
of Guyana's Rupununi region

magnified by the
equatorial front.

Daily torrents of precipitation
pound the landscape.

At its peak, a single month
can see over 13 inches

of rainfall engorging
savannas and flooding rivers.

Guyana is unpredictable.

It's hot and sunny one minute
and then appearing monsoon

like the next.

It's pouring rain and
I really don't care.

Because I know I'm
about to meet my partner

and that makes me feel
better about everything.

Let's do this thing.

Looks like we are here
and rain has stopped.

Time to get naked.

As a medic, I have seen
survivalists struggle physically

and mentally.

I feel like that that
is an advantage.

I have no illusions about
the difficulty of this challenge.

Feels much better.

This is very strange. I am
usually a part of the crew.

And I am not used
to being on this side.

I'm about to meet my
partner. It's the great unknown.

And I think that's going to be
my most important piece of gear.

That I'll have in Guyana.

- Hi.
- Hello.

- Hi.
- Am I glad to see you.

Hi.

- My name is Viktor.
- Hi, I'm Janis.

- Janis, I'll remember that.
- Yeah.

It's a pleasure. I
apologize for the view.

It'll, it'll warm up later.

It'll get better.

- I'm from Virginia.
- You're from Virginia.

- Yes.
- What do you do for a living?

I'm a paramedic.

Holy crap, same here.

You...

Oh, my God, are
we a double medic.

Me too.

Holy [bleep]

- Okay, so...
- Okay. [laughs]

Well, there you go. So I can
see you know [bleep] and stuff.

Absolutely.

It's a little strange being on
the wrong side of the camera.

Yeah.

That made me feel so elated
that there's someone out here

with me who can totally
sympathize and empathize with

the challenges that
we are about to face.

I've done the XL in
Louisiana and XL in Peru.

- Ready for this?
- Yes, I've been ready for a while.

- Here we go.
- Let's do this.

Wow, you did a number
on your ba*ls, bro.

- Is it out?
- It's out.

Freedom!

If I can survive treating
EJ's ba*ls, I can survive this.

I am no stranger
to pushing my body.

I completed three marathons.
I have participated in.

Multiple obstacle course races
including something called the Death Race.

I don't think it's
a good weekend

if you don't sign
a death waiver.

I have been an EMS for 15 years.

A little peek into my office.

That cot right there is already
10 times more comfortable than

the ground is going
to be in Guyana.

I know that already.

It started off as a joke
amongst us medics that

we should take on the
challenge as survivalist

and it stuck with me.

So here I am.

[narrator] While lacking in
primitive survival techniques,

Janis brings medical knowledge
and behind the scenes experience.

Her primitive survival
rating or PSR is set at 5.1.

Yeah, I do the ones
in southern Africa.

Okay.

Three there, I did
a tri once there.

And then two and just two 21s.

I enjoyed my time as a
medic on Naked and Afraid.

I loved every second.

Have you guys peed in
front of each other, in here?

No, you're not thinking...

Now it's time for me
to take on the 21 days

and get on.

Being an outdoorsman.
It started in the military

where I was the
medical specialist

in the Parachute Battalion
called the Pathfinders.

You had to be a
good outdoorsman.

So treating the contestants
on these challenges.

It's been a dream of mine
because it's my favorite TV show.

There's not a single episode
of Naked and Afraid that

I haven't seen.

It definitely gives
me an advantage

in firsthand knowledge of
what happens on the show.

So I won't make the
big mistake of thinking,

I'm going to make
this place my b*tch.

[narrator] Like Janis, Viktor
has limited survival skills,

but his military history along with his
Naked and Afraid medic background,

Give him an edge.

His PSR starts at 5.7.

I see your bags over there.
Should probably go check them out

- and get rolling.
- Absolutely.

All right.

We're going to be
the first crew members

to attempt the 21 day challenge.

And it's kind of cool.

[narrator] In addition
to their personal items,

Janis and Viktor are
provided with a pot,

fire starter and map.

Some water, some
fishing, rock formation.

Possible option for shelter.

Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.
Especially for tonight.

- Okay, let's do it.
- Stick your pot in it?

Let's to do it. Let's go.

[narrator] For the first
time, two crew members

with extensive behind
the scenes knowledge,

but limited survival
experience take on

the 21 day challenge.

Janis and Viktor are dropped at
the base of Guyana's Kusad mountain

where steep ridges
of lush jungle converge

with an unending savannah.

It's here they'll
have to contend with

the rainy season's
most sinister side effect,

swarms of freshly
hatched insects,

Including disease
carrying mosquitoes.

Whose bites can
fester for up to a month

causing a debilitating buildup
of histamine in their human prey.

On land, the giant centipedes
venomous bite leads to

unbearable pain in humans
and death to smaller prey.

But nothing is more
dangerous than the Jaguar.

Reaching upwards
of six feet long,

it's capable of taking down
prey four times its size.

Can you see the... Can you
see where makes this side?

- Yes.
- And you got the little tree.

- You're right in front of it.
- Yes.

Can you see rocks? A flat rock?

[Janis] Okay, I see that... I see
what you're talking about, yes.

[Viktor] Definitely a
spot to build a shelter...

And the map show that
there is a waterway by there,

- so great water source.
- Yeah, hopefully.

We need to get to
our destination soon,

so that we can quickly
establish a shelter

and to get a fire going
and to replenish the fluids

that we've lost
during this hike.

It does not feel we're
getting any closer though.

It does feel like we'll
be walking forever.

Featureless terrain makes
it look like you're not making.

- Any progress, huh?
- Yes.

Every 10 minutes when
you look up it stalls.

It's still the same, it's...

Yeah, your feet doing all right?

My feet are all right.

[Janis] So one good thing about
both of us being medical professionals,

we can recognize if
something just needs, you know,

be monitored and
just rub some dirt in it

or if it needs to
call for the medic.

- Little blackflies are waking up.
- Yep.

Yep.

Oh, no.

Right.

Whatever works.

I know that mosquitoes
like O blood types.

Type O hero, we are delicious.

We are in high demand
from the blood banks

and by insects.

[narrator] In the same way
that specific foods like garlic

can excrete through
pores and repel insects.

A specific blood type
has the opposite effect.

Mosquitoes detect
and prefer type O blood

making those with
it a bigger target.

- It's getting a lot closer.
- Cool.

Oh, wow. Look at this.

It's definitely worth
coming through there.

- Found the river.
- That's our water source over there.

I think we're running out
of time to bowl that shot.

We really need fire, so
tonight we can have water.

We are searching for
different locations for us

to establish a shelter.

But most importantly, we
need to get our fire going

before it gets too late.

So this seems like a good place,

but there's not enough
time to build a shelter tonight.

Not no to these we didn't have
enough time to build a shelter tonight.

We're just going
to have to rough it.

I don't think we need to stress
about anything permanent.

Temporary fire spot,
for now we can...

We can pick and choose and
pick everything perfectly tomorrow.

We know that we have
water that's over there

readily accessible, so we
don't have to hike too far

and I'm starting to
get a little bit thirsty.

Before we can purify
our water, we need a fire,

So we're getting that
done, priority one.

It's a bit of a mission to
get the whole thing going.

It's not perfectly
drying, but let's see,

let's see what we got.

Um... I think time's kind
of running out on us now.

Getting this fire going
is this is similar to what

you do, you know, as
even my life as a paramedic.

Your tools are gonna be packed
out in the correct sequence

and ready, you
know, once it's going,

there's really no time to waste.

- Look at the...
- I just cut it.

Okay, we're going to build a leaf
fire until this wood dries out and...

We have fire.

Come on, let's celebrate.

Do you want me to flex?

That's my hero right there.

It is a good day. I
got a good partner.

I got a good fire. So I
don't think we can actually...

b*tch too much.

Nice pot going on. Hope
I'm not burning myself.

And that's a hot fire.

- What are these?
- I don't know.

I'm getting eaten
alive. Holy crap.

Yeah, I feel like these
are the ones that come out

- just as...
- Any...

The bugs are intense.

There goes the crew.

We used to go with them.

Come back.

Oh, my God, this might
have been a huge mistake.

- [insects buzzing]
- Oh, [bleep]

God, I wanna lie down.

- Yeah. It's too buggy right now.
- But it's impossible.

I'm trying to not scream.

Oh, they hurt.

It's...

[narrator] Due to the
different circadian rhythms

of Guyana's flying insects.

When one species
retires for the evening,

Another waits to
take their place.

Oh, I might peel
them off my skin.

Oh. They're bad.

But here we are, night one.

Janis feeding the bugs.

And doing a [bleep]
job of it. [bleep]

Okay, I guess
have faith in the fire.

[thunderclap]

- It's starting to rain.
- Hmm?

It's starting to rain.

Big rain.

[thunderclap]

Our fire's pretty much
DOA now that it's raining.

Tonight, is gonna suck.

Oh, my [bleep]

It is nonstop.

Literally nonstop.

[Janis] Our fire is long gone.

All that work.

We lost our fire halfway
through the evening. We got wet.

So the plan for
today is to ensure that

we have a decent fire
tonight and to ensure that

we have a waterproof shelter
in the place of our choosing.

- Let's walk around this thing once, you and I.
- Right.

Why are the bugs even
worse all of a sudden?

[narrator] On a leather press, the
number of Guyana's blood sucking insects

can vary from day to day.

But it's in the 24 hour period
after significant rains that

their numbers and their
appetite for food explode.

That thing maybe offers
something just to natural...

- closed shelter, you know what I mean?
- Yeah.

I'm just gonna quickly
pop in there to see what's...

Holy [bleep]

- Hey.
- Yeah.

Now you got to get in here.

You can actually stand up,
it goes high up in the back.

Three Starship Enterprise.

It's solid stone.
It's waterproof.

It's windproof, but it's got
various entrances and exits.

So we can create a draft in it.

We can make a fire in
it. We can reflect heat

because it's off stone.

And we can trap smoke in
there, so we can combat the bugs.

It's an absolute
game changer for us.

I'll go fetch the
wood from the old fire

and we can dry it
in the background.

We can now actually, you
know, focus our attention on

getting comfortable
and getting wood

and hopefully, hopefully
get a flame tonight.

Okay, If I can just do this.

One magnesium run.

[bleep] Can't we get it going?

[grunts] Come on, very good.

[mutters] It just can't
take this [bleep] little bit.

[sighs]

It's all important
to get the fire.

It's our only source of
light, heat, bug repellent,

water purification.

There's nothing more important.

That tinder is too damp.

So I am scared.

Yeah, this is the, this is
the nightmare scenario.

I mean a night without
fire it's easily [bleep]

[Janis speaking]

[Viktor speaking]

Yeah.

- Oh, this hurts bad.
- What?

Everything.

Just cramped up and shivering.

It is day three and I no
longer feel like a crew member.

I am a straight up survivalist
for Naked and Afraid.

This is just
thoroughly disgusting.

I already know from being
a medic on these challenges

that mud and ash do nothing
to help with these bites.

There are bugs gathering
around my already open wounds

some day three low right there.

And I'm getting sleepy.

I'll get started on getting
kindling into the sun.

Janis, she was cold last night.
She was really cold last night.

The bugs really love her. The
only way that I can support her

is if I can get a fire going to keep
ourselves comfortable tonight.

The weather today lends itself to
actually drying our tinder properly,

so I hope we'll actually
have good success.

Let's make some fire.

I've got these very fine
twiggies which are bone dry.

They'll burn nicely.

Okay.

Try not to get too
excited too early, but...

I think we have a fire.

I think we got a fire.

We have a lot of wood
we can toss on there

to get it, like, nice and big
to smoke out all these bugs.

We doing the double
fire, one on this side.

One on this side.

So we'll see what's
gonna happen tomorrow.

Vicious.

We're burning two fires, but...

I'm still getting eaten up.

These bugs are a completely
different level of cruel.

I...

Am torn from the floor up.

I've got bites everywhere.

There is not a spot
where there is not a welt.

- Oh, mother... trucker.
- What?

I'm bitten.

I've seen a lot of people bug
bitten, but hers is definitely the worst

I've seen on any challenge.

We're not talking 1000s, we're
talking hundreds of 1000s of bug bites.

If anything's gonna take
her out of a challenge,

it is going to be that.

So it was so with her
being ill and inflamed.

Getting in some
proteins is essential.

I noticed that there's
a very large lizard

that's run up the same
tree five or six times.

So I'm gonna catch that bugger.

If she gets an entire
meal of protein in,

I think it's going to... I think
it's going to work for her.

We've made a bunch of
nooses and he has to run through

one of the loops.
He's got little spiky feet.

He's gonna catch himself on it.

And I'm feeling
confident this will work.

[rain pattering]

Okay, this is not
a good rain. This...

I'm gonna rain the
whole day type of rain.

[Janis] Yeah.

It drips on the fire. It
drips you when we sleep.

It's dripping right on me.

Keeping up our fire
going. It's just not feasible.

Come on, Jesus
Christ, what is still biting?

Janis... she hasn't
laid down in 24 hours.

She can't. Her entire back,
the legs, buttocks, shoulders.

She can't. Her entire back,
the legs, buttocks, shoulders

and her flanks are covered
in insect and mosquito bites.

She's having a
histamine reaction to it.

I am worried it's going
to reach a point where

it's going to take her down.

Ooh, it's cold.

I can just try and
windbreak for you, but [bleep]

Do I want to tap out? No, but...

Can I do anything
to make it better?

We're doing everything
that we know that we can.

But I just want it to stop.

[bleep], I'm sorry there's
nothing more I can do.

These bumps are
so painful and so bad.

I don't want to get to a point
where I have to be medically tapped

because I didn't get the
inflammation under control.

I have a little bit of irony in that
the med's gonna call for a medic.

This is something.

- Yeah.
- Like... It's a lot.

It's painful, itchy, burning.

Do you feel like
you're getting fever?

No, no. Just hot
where the bites are.

It's very interesting to
be on the other side of it

getting checked
by the set medic.

- Do you have any trouble in breathing?
- Mm-mmm.

I'm gonna give you
an antihistamine.

From...

[narrator] To help her body adjust
to the onslaught of inflammation.

Janis is given a small
dose of antihistamines.

As her system builds immunity,
additional bites should react.

As her system builds immunity,
additional bites should react

with less intensity.

Thank you very much.
I appreciate your time.

- Thanks, doctor, appreciate it.
- All right.

[Janis] If I met a survivalist
in this situation looking like

how I am. I would
immediately give them Benadryl

because when
you're this inflamed,

it's the worst sunburn
feeling combined with the flu.

But I'm gonna take a stroll.

I think that lizard go
hung up in that little trap.

These little nooses, damn
it we need to find some food.

It's really knocking us now.

We'll check it every
day and at some stage,

we'll have everyone
hanging in it.

- [water splashing]
- [bleep]

Don't know what it is.

There's something splashing
and fighting in the water behind us.

No frickin' way.

[gasps] Oh, my God.

I went in there and I could
see something fighting

and I stabbed it.

I got a frog, a big
thing which was busy

being envenomated
by a centipede.

[bleep] look at this. It's
like a chicken drumstick.

[Janis] This is the most
beautiful thing I've seen in days.

[Viktor] Ah, just smell it.

Are these feet sizzling?

That was much needed.

- Cheers.
- Cheers.

Holy crap, it got stuck on it.

- It tastes like chicken.
- Oh?

Not too shabby, my friend.

Holy [bleep] Janis,
this is really good.

I'm still chewing. I'm so
bad doing it beside you.

This is definitely one
of the best things that's.

This is definitely one
of the best things that's

happened to me
since we've been here.

Today, my plan. I would
like to get fish basket started.

We leave it out there for the
remainder of the time here.

Well, we should get something.

Right now, I'm
feeling a little bit better.

Antihistamines seem
to help a little bit.

After you get your day's meal,
I have a little more energy.

But Viktor and I just because
we have this big protein score,

we're not going to stop.

We're not going to just
let this be our last meal.

We're still going
to fight for our food.

All right.

Try and find vines
that won't crack.

Protein is definitely
the focus of this day.

Janis is gonna
go on a fishing trip.

But for me, the lizard
snare doesn't work.

I'm thinking there's
got to be something else

to snatch a lizard.

Cut a few pieces of
wood for the dead falls

I wanna set.

For the dead falls
there's a lot, you know,

measuring the amount
of all the dead falls.

This is the most rudimentary.

It just needs a lot
of balancing work.

And the crux is that little
stick which is reaching out

and you don't need
a lot of pressure

if that thing goes down.

Et voila.

This is going to be
the opening right here

and I'm weaving the
vines that we found into it.

To create the cone shape.

By the end of the
day, we can go ahead

and get this deployed.

All right, so there is
our submerged trap.

It is in a pretty shallow area.

We'll check it tomorrow night
and I'm pretty frickin' hungry.

Yeah.

Right, just check the fish trap.

She's still submerged nicely.

Nope.

There's a bit of
bait at the bottom.

Damn it.

Holy crap.

We're in dire need
when it comes to food.

So, yeah, are we going
to destroy this thing.

It's quick energy, and
hopefully something delicious.

It's a massive bloody thing.

Yeah.

I want to take it down.

Have you ever
gotten a hive before?

Normal bees.

Yeah, I've never done that. I
usually avoid stinging insects.

These are stingless.

[narrator] Stingless
Meliponini bees,

while not always producing
honey will defend their nest

if provoked.

Despite having stingers
that aren't fully formed,

they can inflict powerful
and painful bites.

All right, there's
a call to glory.

Oh, man.

There doesn't seem to
be anything coming out.

It just seems to just
be kind of crumbling.

Oh, yeah. And
they're pissed off.

Ah! They do.

Whoa. [laughs]

Whoo! Run! Go, go, go, go.

Stingless, my a*s.

Oh, yeah, and
they're pissed off.

Whoa. Whoo! Run!

Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.

Oh b*tches!

Stingless, my a*s. Oh,
they tore me nut sack.

Oh, my ba*ls.

The bees are following.
They're extremely aggressive

and vindictive.

So far, you know, the
general and the two colonels

haven't had any any bites,
but of course, the bees

they, they just changed it.

They're following me.

[bleep] There's a cloud with me.

It's moving. That
wasn't our best idea.

So sting-lessness doesn't
mean that they don't bite.

Gotten bitten,
about 50 times now.

- My God.
- And you as well.

Ah.

Just got another one.

And sounds like we're
back to the drawing board

for a more immediate
food source.

[Viktor] You feeling
okay this morning?

[Janis] Really weak.

I'm sorry.

You don't need to say [bleep]

I'll take care of you.

Easy as pie because
the day is gonna come

you're gonna have
to take care of me

and I'm the biggest
baby you've ever seen.

- So I'll take care of you. Don't worry.
- Thank you.

- That's, that's not good.
- Mm-mmm.

And for me that's,
that's pathological.

Give me your arm.

My heart rate's
really come down.

I'm on about 65.

Um, Janis and I have to
condition to monitor each other.

I'm struggling to catch yours.

- Am I rebounding?
- Yeah.

This is a combination
of lethargy.

Not eating well,
not drinking well.

It becomes a bit of a
risk, so we're going to...

we're going to fix that.
Get our pressures up again.

Actually thinks it's not
a bad chunk of wood

to make a bow.

To catch this lizard,
we've got some dead falls,

But they're clever they're wily.

So I need a bit more power.

Thinking of making a
bow like the native bows.

So it's gonna be very
short draw, very long arrow

because I don't need
to propel it very far.

It needs to go a foot

and then I'll be able to
straighten them relatively quickly.

Over the fire. The onslaught

taking potshots
at these lizards.

- Okay, let's do this.
- Give them hell.

I'm upset that I can't
be there right now

for my partner who is running
around doing all this stuff

and here I am tired and
I'm dizzy standing up,

but I am eager to return
the favor because I know that

his limitless energy
does have a limit.

Can you see me on the corner?

Touched him.

That was relatively
close-ish, but I'm happy.

So you can see it's a
toy, it's no big impact,

but if I had a...
four pronged tine.

I would have had that one, so
just a few small modifications

and I'll have a dead lizard.

I'm so frickin' weak.

Even sitting up is a lot and
I had to lay right back down.

We gotta get
something I can eat.

Janis didn't come out
of the shelter today.

We need food. A
high protein score,

you know, today or tomorrow,
otherwise it will reach a crisis point.

See that arrow's a bit heavy.

I'm also feeling the...
I'm also feeling lethargic.

I'm tired and weak and weak and
I haven't been this lethargic ever.

- [rain pattering]
- [thunderclap]

It's raining.

Yeah.

Can't believe they're back.

[bleep] just keep on coming.

- Yeah?
- Oh, yeah.

I don't know.

Oh, it's too much.

I'm going down.

Wait.

Hey, hey, hey.

- ...Oh, I think I sat on one.
- I know.

- All right, here we go.
- I had to deal with too many ba*ls experiences

in Louisiana and
no, no testicles.

- Yeah, uncle EJ's...
- No testicular injuries here.

I'm getting warned.

I've had thorns in them.

I'm not supposed to get thorns.

Especially Christina
and Brittany.

Viktor always seems to
come up with interesting names

for his male genitalia

and I am actually at
a loss for words about

what to say about that.

[Viktor] Stick in the berries.

The tree with adjacent boulders.

The Presleys.

We're talking about Elvis,
Priscilla and Lisa Marie.

All of 'em.

Ah.

Hey, hey, hey.

You almost fell to
the front of the fire.

Have I?

Yeah.

Viktor's skin is clammy.
He's breathing really fast.

[groans]

I recognize the signs
of an anxiety attack

and I'm trying to calm him down

and making sure that he's okay.

You're not cool by far.

Hey, come on. Come here.

Over here. All the
way down here.

I had done stuff there...
for a little bit too like

you're about to have a seizure.

Last night was probably
the worst night of my life.

I don't think I've ever
been so bug bitten

and despondent that I
actually go into a bloody panic

and I'm serious, if
you weren't there,

I'd probably be dead because
nobody finds you till the next morning.

It would've been ugly.

I'm so glad that you were here.

I'm thankful to Janis. The two
of us will have a bond for life.

That's my word.

Pushing through 21 together.

Of course.

Viktor is pushing through. I know
he's getting really, really drained.

But I'm so glad I
could be there for him

just like he has
been there for me.

Holy son of a... crap.

[bleep] tortoise.

- Babe.
- What?

I [bleep]

You're not... we've
got a decent meal.

Oh, my God.

So ready for the
tortoise to be found

and it's truly a game changer.

Yay. Yay!

Oh, thank you.

I am a flurry of emotions.

She could not have
arrived at a better time.

This meal will help
us in so many ways.

Holy crap.

This is good.

Looking at 150 grams
of pure meat each.

I'm still waiting for
that rush to kick in,

but my brain's
already happening.

Take a long, slow sip.

Taste the nutrients.

This was a great win. I
know it sounds so cliche,

but it really is a game changer.

It's day 21.

It's after four in the morning.

Few hours to extraction.

Never again will
I be bug bitten.

Day 21 is here.

Day 21, day 21.

My God.

For once it's actually,
like, clear, sunny skies

and it's gonna be a hot one.

So we're gonna move
with a purpose today.

Yeah, definitely. Extraction.

There's a bit of a
mountain in front of us.

It's gonna be an intense
day, full of surprises,

but I'm not scared of it at all.

- All right.
- Okay, so we're gonna head for the X.

Maps oriented.

Looks like he's a couple
of river crossings and a spot

of savannah that
we have to cross.

It's going to be a long trip
walking through the savannas.

It's going to be a scorcher
today, so let's get it done.

Okay.

[narrator] To extract,
Janis and Viktor

must hike three and a half miles

from the base of Kusad Mountain

through waterlogged savannas,
fields of sharp razor grass,

and unpredictable floodways
before reaching a road back

to civilization.

Leaving this savannah, we
plowed through this for 21 days.

- It's not for... it's better.
- Ooh, [laughs]

- It's better.
- I was not expecting that.

It's about a 50 yard stretch.

And then we'll be
out of this cut grass.

- It's cutting in through all my broken, open bug bites.
- Oh, yeah.

But, name of the game.

It's making us bleed which
is attracting more bugs.

- That's painful.
- Okay.

So we are so itchy
and we are in pain,

but we're just trying to
keep trucking through.

Okay, here comes our
favorite, the prickly grass.

And each of this grass
itches as if it inflames...

- Yes.
- But it's from the last five days.

My ankles and my
calves are torn up.

- [Viktor] It's my, it's in my skin.
- Grass.

You realize that the last time.

We were on a
challenge, we were crew.

It looks darkish, it might
be water, but let's see.

We gotta be close to the end.

We come a hell of a long way.

Bit of a son of a b*tch.
It's really, it's really moving.

- Thank you, days of rain.
- Yeah,

and it looks deep. There's
gonna be a lot of sharp crap

in there as well. So
let's stay together.

- Oh, it looks deep.
- Okay, I'll still plumb the depths.

We can see the water's high
and water's flowing at a high rate

and those can be difficult, but if
this is river's anything between us

and the extraction,
we'll go through it

if it was a river of lava.

- Are you with me?
- Yeah, I'm still with you.

Deep... oh, got it, standby.

- Are you okay?
- Yeah, maybe I'll fight it.

Give me your hand.

A better grip, better
grip, better grip.

Okay, go.

I'm taking you
to the other bank.

- You're good?
- Yeah.

Sorry, I'm trying to
move as fast as I can.

[panting] I know I'm stumbling.

But I'm still taking
steps forward.

I have come way
too far to just give up.

- Trying, I'm sorry.
- It's cool.

I'm not giving up
I'm just... so weak.

- The sun's beating down.
- Yeah.

Wouldn't have hurt if there's
a little breeze for company.

Yeah, I know.

God doesn't care
about us anymore.

Don't tell me the
vultures are circling us.

- I'm pretty sure we smell like death.
- I think we smell like death.

Because it's 21 days, I think
we can survive the next...

21 minutes.

Dude, I think this is the road.

-I think it's definitely,
-You think so?

Yeah, and it's a
recently used road.

See me civilization,
I'm staying with it

until something
pretty, shiny man made.

I don't care who it is.

This is the first man
made object regardless.

This is the first man
made object regardless

of how primitive that
we've run into in 21 days.

- All right.
- Let's get out of here.

It symbolizes an
exit the road home.

- Get in.
- Yeah.

We are finished and I just
forgot the pain in the brain

that I was feeling and
able to just hug it out

and just feel that
emotion together.

That's the official
end of 21 days.

Oh, I would never
done it without you.

I know, I couldn't have
done it without you.

Having a taste of
my own medicine

was extremely humbling.

There's really no
other way to put it.

I think it's good to have the
tables turned every so often,

so that you can see
it from the other side.

[narrator] Over the
course of the challenge,

Janis lost 30 pounds.

Her PSR rises from 5.1 to 6.6.

I will never ever, ever
judge a survivalist.

- Me neither. Me neither.
- Ever.

Getting a taste of
my own medicine was,

it's an eye opener,

but like most things, I think
it'll make me better at my job.

This experience has changed
me as to how I work as

a first responder.

[narrator] Over 21 days,
Viktor lost 28 pounds.

His PSR rises from 5.7 to 7.1.

I'm done! Never again!

Goodbye, Guyana!

Never again.
