This is definitely a
very harsh environment,
but I've been studying
a lot of the plant life here
and I'm planning on
harvesting food for us.
I grew up on a homestead
and we were on fruits
and vegetables year-round
and it's always been
a passion of mine.
I'm definitely more of a
gatherer than a hunter.
I'm just ready to dive right in.
Man, the terrain is super crazy.
It's a lot like Texas.
It's dry, it's arid.
But at the same time,
you know, we don't
have big game animals
runnin' around
that could hurt you.

will attempt to survive 21 days
deep in the South
African bushveld,
a rugged terrain
where dense brush
provides cover to leopards
and venomous snakes.
The region's freshwater sources
are home to aggressive
Nile crocodiles,
who's jaws deliver a

during an attack.
I'm excited to meet my

the spiritual journey
to experience extreme
hunger, extreme thirst,

while I'm out here and I'm
a doer and I'm a workhorse.
But out here, survival
is the long game,
more of the tortoise,
less of the hare.
So I have no intention
of making Africa my b*tch.
Shell is experienced
in gathering,
foraging, and
living off the land.
But she's unfamiliar
with African flora,
and has less
experience with hunting.

This morning, I got

a hand dug well.

to spend so much time
going through the process
of building our fire up,

for our water to cool.
This looks like a

Once I hit that water
table of the pond,

filter in to that point.
We can drink, you know,
until we run the well dry
and then it'll seep back in

be readily available

These catfish are

Can't catch one of

Shell will create a catfish trap
by digging a large
hole in the ground
that connects to the
water source via canal,
which allows water
and fish to flow in.
Next, the trap is baited
and fenced in with sticks,
and a one-way door to
prevent the fish from escaping.
It's a lot of effort,
especially since
this trap's so big.
But looking forward to
having passive ways of fishing,
see that it can kind
of take some of that
hunting pressure off of him.
I'm always concerned about Cole
because he works so hard
and I just don't want
him to burn himself out.
I don't I get somethin'
to eat in a couple days,
she's not gonna be doing good.
I've been worried
about her since day one.
The risk would be me,
like, exhausting myself
but, um, the reward is
that we get, like, really
giant catfish and stuff.
That would feed us for days.

The mornings are
getting colder and colder.
Sleeping is actually the
suckiest part of all of this.
It doesn't matter
what you lie down on,

Like, baking on one
side, freezing on the other.

Yesterday was rough.
I'll probably take

rest a little bit,

having a pity party
this morning about not
being able to sleep last night
and then she passes out
like that, like, hardcore,
scared the out of me.
I can see her ribs and, really,
just kind of motivates me
to go try to get
somethin' to eat.
You know, my body's
not doin' great right now.
I expected the
starvation aspect of this,
it's hard on the body for sure.
It's just a matter of
just honestly grittin'
and bearin' it, and
just suffering through it.
But I'm just gonna
be takin' it easy,
I'm gonna hydrate today.
I feel like I'm in this
amazing headspace,
honestly, still.
Cole's not in a great headspace
because of the hunting
situation out here.
This is, uh, some
of the croc gut.
I plan on going croc hunting,
just sit there in the shade,
wait till he comes
up to try to get it.
See if that gets his attention.

So I just shot a eland cow.
She was about 30 yards.
I felt good with the shot,
but she spun a little bit
and when she was running away,
I could see her
holding her offside leg,
so I'm just praying
that I made a good shot
and she goes down.
I'm freaking pumped right now.
When I recovered the arrow,
it had good blood on
it, but unfortunately,
the penetration was
only about four inches.
So, when the shot hit her,
I think it came into her brisket
and then hit that offside leg,
which is not a
totally fatal shot,
but there is a
blood trail to follow.
For the safety of
the cast and crew,
Cole must return to camp
and resume his
search in the morning.
Taking up the trail
as long as I think
it's safe to do.
It's definitely not a good idea
to be out here
after it gets dark.
I mean, there's lions,
there's leopards,
there's hyenas.
There's other big game
that if you stumble across
at night, it's not gonna
be a good situation,
so just gonna back out
and leave it for the night,
and get back on
it in the mornin'.

I shot a eland cow.

Um, unfortunately
with the fading light,
I decided to come back to camp.
But her leg is definitely broke
and the good news is that
she can't move around very good.
So, we'll have to
pray about it tonight

you know, hopefully,
hopefully we end up
recovering her tomorrow.

We need to get on the move.
We can get up
on this blood trail
and go find this cow.

Finding the eland would be
a huge win for us morale-wise
and our bodies could really
use somethin' substantial.
The last thing I want
is somethin' to find it
before we do.

like, circling up there.

Anytime that I'm elk hunting,
you always look for,
like, ravens or birds
'cause they're the
first ones to find it.
I think we just keep
heading that way.

is looking for an easy meal
and me getting that
animal wounded,
it just makes for a
dangerous situation
for us going into the track
and I'm not only
worried for our safety,
but I'm worried for our meat
that could potentially
carry us to the end.

We've been getting weaker
and weaker by the day
and all of the nutrients
packed into all this organ meat.
It's just insanity
for our bodies.
We can finish strong and we're
stronger than we are already.

I think my momentum is building

which is freaking awesome,
you know, thanks to this eland.

The days here are long,
so while you're sitting there,
you kinda want something
to occupy your mind.
And so, I've been
creating a line of jewelry
for Cole and I to
wear for extraction.
And we're calling it
primitive high fashion.
There's sinew on this tooth.
But you can see
there's a little loop to,
like, use it as like a
pendant or whatever earring.
We're calling this
bush pig tusk necklace.
So you see this expertly twisted
cordage from Mopane bark.
And it also has a
native bird feather
and a bush pig tusk,
which is the centerpiece
to this primitive high fashion.

And there was something
outside of our boma.
I could hear it
walking over here.
Like, right next
to our boma or...

It's just walking and
going through the brush.
Some hyena, celebrating with us.
Last night, we had
some good animal activity
outside of our boma.
Might be lions, there might be
other dangerous creatures,
[i]maybe hyenas, unfortunately.
There's a variety of
different scavengers
who will come up and
try to eat all of our meat.
So, we just definitely
need to be very alert
and make sure that
we're protecting it.
I'm gonna smoke some meat.
We're gonna make jerky.
I'll just basically
hang the meat
and then I'll just strip it off.
So since this meat's been out,
you can already
tell that the smoke
is already starting
to do a job on it.
It's developing
this protective skin.
As soon as it
gets the skin on it,
the blow flies
cannot penetrate it
and potentially
contaminate our meat.
So, I'm just gonna
take and process it down
into thin little small pieces
and then we'll lay
it on the smoker
and let it go to work.
When you're making jerky,
you just want small, thin pieces
to where the smoke can
kinda cover every bit of it.
Let that smoke really billow
out [i]amongst everything,
'cause I need smoke
in there, but no fire.
Whenever you harvest
an animal like this,
the work never stops.
You keep going
until everything is safe
and cured and processed.
I've been working all day,
getting everything
cut into smokable sizes
so that none of it perishes
and everything we
have there is consumable
for not just today,
but for days to come.
That looks delicious.
It's a lot of meat.
My first go at bush jerky,
I think it turned
out pretty decent.
It's delicious.
I mean, we're basically
gonna coast through
until day 21 now,
thanks to this eland.
Day 20.
Feels good.
It feels real good.
I can't wait to be extracted.

Pretty much our final day,
minus obviously, extraction day.
Gonna live today out strong
by resting and napping,
and just devouring this jerky
that is indescribably good.

and, uh, yeah,
we're about to pack it up
and we're about to head out.

This morning, I'm
feeling a bit tired.
I maybe got half hour of sleep.
It looks like in the 40s
is a no-go for sleeping for me.
It's gonna be a very hot
day, so we need to definitely
be aware of
dehydration, heat stroke.
This has been a awesome,
awesome experience for sure,
but I'm ready to go.

It's gonna be a hot one.
The extraction hike's
gonna be brutal.
We're both pretty damn tired.

After 21 days with little sleep,
Cole and Shell must
now take on an 8-mile trek
across the blistering
South African bush belt,
facing triple-digit
temperatures.
Before reaching
their extraction point,
they'll first need to navigate
a treacherous stretch of
thorn-scrubbed grasslands.
Teeming with predators
[i]and venomous snakes
like the deadly Cape cobra.
Yeah, it's definitely
getting hot.
Definitely wanna
keep our eye out
for snakes and
stuff in this area.
Gotta fix my stuff now. Oh.

- Getting bushy.
- Yeah, it is.
It's just crazy. You can't
see 20 yards off the trail.
Yeah, you really can't.
Sand's getting hot.

Feet are tender.

those sands spurs.

deceptively small,
yet merciless landmines
[i]strewn across the grassland,
poised to punish
unsuspecting travelers
and native wildlife.

Ooh. That was a patch.
Yikes.
They picked up like a
bunch of 'em just then.
Yikes.
Oh, be careful there are thorns.
Yeah.
I'm about to get hooked.
Extraction hike is brutal.
I'm climbing over crap.
I'm getting thorns in my feet.
I'm going through
briars and bushes.

out for these ants.

The sun's beating
down, my mouth is dry,
and I just keep trudging on.
You know, I know
what's at the end
of the tunnel, so

Been walking for a good while.

We're just gonna
follow this dry river wash.
Follow these animals
tracks that are all in the road.
Yeah, down to water, right?
Terrain's changed.
Uh, seems like
it's, uh, softer sand.
The sand's a little bit wet.
Yeah. We gotta be

I kind of just now notice that.
I hear the geese too.

I feel so excited
and very emotional,
and just happy of
having done the 21 days
with my partner here.
Cole and I have such
different survival strategies,
but we did great
together as a partnership.
We enhanced each other's journey
and helped each other out
and I learned a ton from him
and I loved seeing how
good of a teamwork we had.
We did it.
So grateful that
Shell was my partner
and couldn't ask
for a better partner.
She definitely kept my head
in the game and, you know,
that's what a good
partner's there to do.
I wanted to learn out here.
I'm a learner. I love
learning, and I learned a lot.
It was rough at times
for sure, hard on the body,
but learned that
my body and mind
are both very strong,
probably stronger than
even what I even thought.
Shell's mental toughness
powered her through the finish.
15 pounds lighter,
her primitive survival
rating rises from 6.7
to 7.1.
The biggest takeaway
from this challenge
is just never give up.
Mentally, you've gotta be ready
to buckle down and
roll with the punches.
And I learned that my mind's
probably not as
strong as my body,
but I'm working on
that and it's definitely
become a lot stronger
since I've been out here.
Bent, but not broken, [i]Cole
completes the challenge,
shedding 23 pounds
in the process.
His PSR rises from 7.2 to 7.7.
