I'm nervous... for the
thorns that are out here.
In my manhood.
I'm feeling super,
super anxious,
just super excited to
take this challenge on.
I've made a lot of
questionable choices
in my life, for sure.
This is not one of them.
It may seem so to
my family and friends,
but I'm gonna prove out here
what a badass survivalist I am.
My name is Sarah
and I am an alcoholic.
I've been sober
almost five years.
And digging myself
out of that place
has prepared me to
succeed in this challenge.
I'm in the cradle of life.
This is where... This...
You know, this is
where life began
and this is where my
story's gonna begin.
Well, I've had some
considerable struggles
in my life, in my teenage years.
I got into drugs and alcohol,
and this challenge is
probably the biggest opportunity
I've ever had to prove to myself
that none of that stuff
that's from my past
determines who I'm
gonna be in my future.
And I'm ready to make
my family proud of me.
Africa, I'm gonna rule you.
Twenty-one days, here I go!
Woo!
I'm just not sure
anybody can survive
here for 21 days.
Oh, my God.
Yeah!
Two strangers.
Ha! Run, go, go, go, go.
Oh, God.
No food.
Whoa!
No water.
Twenty-one days.
Don't tap.
Die first.
Naked and Afraid.
All right. This looks
like the end of my road.
I'm totally fine
with being around
another naked
human, male or female.
However, talking to
my partner about this,
that he's not fond of me
cuddling with another
partner, uh, naked,
and we compromised that if
we were going to
cuddle for body warmth,
I would be the big spoon.
Here I go.
All right. Here I am.
Naked and Afraidin Africa.
I was born this way
and hopefully, I
don't die this way.
I guess this is my stop.
I am a bit of an exhibitionist.
I enjoy being in my
natural state outdoors.
Africa, here I come.
I had been preparing
for this for so long,
the moment is here.
I love bushcraft,
I'm a huge crafter.
I have obtained my
skills, my outdoor skills,
by taking myself
out into the woods,
so I can go out into the bush
and create just about
anything that I need to survive.
Shelter's complete.
Crawling the hole down there.
My son is my absolute world.
He means everything to me.
I've had some considerable
struggles in my life
and I have not been very
impressive as a father.
I've had a very hard
time holding down a job,
keeping a place to live.
Being a good father
means the world to me.
My dad was not a great one,
and I would say, it scarred me.
Completing this challenge
is my chance to prove to my son
that his dad can
accomplish great things,
and that I'm not
the disappointment
that I've shown
him that I can be.
Overcoming hardships in his life
has prepared Sam
for this challenge.
But his history of letting
himself and others down
could impact his
relationship with a partner.
Sam begins with a
Primitive Survival Rating,
or PSR, of 5.9.
As a recovering alcoholic,
I got into camping,
fishing, being outdoors,
learning survival
skills outside.
Being sober was the
hardest anguishing thing
that I've been through.
But here I am today,
like, a grateful, sober mom.
I have a beautiful
incredible, almost 4-year-old.
She's the coolest
little creature
that I've ever seen in my life.
Okay. Winner,
winner, turkey dinner.
Winner, winner, turkey dinner.
Woo!
Right in the heart.
Didn't think I was gonna
get out of my addiction alive.
And I did.
I went to hell
and I made it out.
And this is just
another version of that.
It's another challenge.
And I'm gonna get through it.
Sarah is determined to succeed.
But her independent
nature may work at odds
as she pairs up with
a strident partner.
Sarah's initial
PSR is set at 6.2.
I think I see, uh, a naked
person walking at me.
Hey, partner.
There's my partner.
Nice to finally meet you.
-Nice to meet you, too. Sarah.
-Sam.
-Can I give you a hug?
-Yeah, let's do it.
Thank you.
-For this.
-You ready for this?
I ready. You're crazy too, huh?
Crazy. Let's do it. I'm pumped.
All right. No quitting.
No quitting.
So where are our bags at?
I think it's all over there.
You wanna go look?
Yeah. Go get 'em.
All right.
Oh, nice.
Let's see.
That probably yours.
There's an item in there.
Oh, right, cool.
- Oh, yeah.
- Nice.
- This is, uh...
- Oh, wow.
a hand-forged knife that
was made for this experience.
Yeah?
Yeah. What'd you bring?
This is from my, uh,
lovely 4-year-old
daughter, Izzy Moon.
- Oh, awesome.
- -She wrote "Izzy and mommy here."
Got a little rainbow.
In addition to their
personal items,
Sarah and Sam have also
been provided with a pot
and a fire starter.
So there's our
light stuff right here.
- Nice.
- Cool.
All right.
- We got a map.
- Oh, we got a map.
I'm guessing that
yellow arrow is us
because that's the
big old tree right here.
Looks like we're
gonna go that way,
past the ironwood
tree right here.
And our water source
is gonna be on our right.
So we're gonna head
west out there to the water
and it looks like that's
where we should probably
try to set up our camp.
-What do you think?
-Southwest.
-Let's do it.
-Let's go.
-Thank you, sir.
-You're welcome.
All right. Let's do it.
Let's go.
For their challenge,
Sarah and Sam are entering
the Chikomo Matombo region,
a searingly hot and humid
wild land in South Africa.
They'll need to adapt quickly
to a dense thorny woodland
that is one of the most
dangerous on the continent.
Fighting to co-exist
are packs of deadly lions
that work together to
take down their prey.
Powerful leopards, whose
excellent night vision,
turns them into
nocturnal K*llers.
And aggressive Nile
crocodiles who use a death roll
to hold victims
underwater until they drown.
As Sarah and Sam make
their way through the scrub land,
they'll also need
to be on the lookout
for lethal puff adder snakes
that use large hinged fangs
for deep venom penetration.
Now where are you from, Sam?
I am from Northern
California. How about you?
Me, too.
- No way.
- Shut up. Where?
Uh, Rohnert Park.
Oh, my God. We're neighbors.
Are you kidding me?
I'm in Santa... I'm
from Santa Rosa.
- What?
- Yeah, dude.
Oh, that's so rad.
So you said you
have, uh, a 4-year-old?
I do.
I have a 13-year-old son.
He just turned 13 last month.
- Wow, congratulations.
- Yeah.
And, uh, I am... I am
in this challenge for him.
- Yeah?
- That's what I'm doing for.
I feel like we
have a lot of, uh,
common things going on here.
I also, um, am a
recovering alcoholic,
almost five years,
super proud of that.
I feel like we are just
kindred spirits in that way,
I haven't had a drop
of alcohol in 10 years.
Yeah.
- yeah, dude.
- Team sober.
- Ten years. That's incredible.
- Yeah.
I'm super stoked to meet Sam.
Sam also is a recovering
alcoholic and I love that.
I love us.
We're crazy-a*s people,
trying to do crazy-a*s
things sober,
and experience
every moment of it.
And, you know, coming
from that kind of background,
I know he's got a lust for life,
so, um, I think we have
a really good chance
of making it out here.
We're both Northern
California alcoholics.
- That is just blowing my mind.
- Incredible.
Getting muggy.
Yeah, it is.
Whoa!
Look at these...
elephant tramps.
Oh, my God.
Are those freaking huge?
That's huge.
That's gotta be.
Holy.
There's a lot of poop,
dude. They're here.
There's a lot of
poop right here.
That's kind of why
I don't wanna get--
Like, there's a lot of
fresh-looking poop.
Yeah.
It's kind of terrifying
how fresh it is.
Oh.
We're not in, uh, yuppie
wino Sonoma County anymore.
No, we are not in
Sonoma County anymore.
Golly.
I'm sweating my
a*s off right now.
I already feel sunburned.
-Yeah, I hope we're getting...
-This is, uh...
closer to water.
Oh, my goodness.
Look to the right.
- Water!
- Oh.
Oh, my God. Look at that.
That's a lot of water.
So, yeah, clearly
there's a lot of animal
tracks through here,
and this, you know,
isn't the place to stop at,
but I bet if we come up around,
just circle around the
water edge over there,
maybe somewhere
back up away from it,
we can find a space
spot to build our boma.
Yeah.
- We can look tomorrow.
- Yeah.
- Where the water goes to.
- Yup.
I wanna see the whole thing.
Watch out for snakes.
Sarah, you find
anything good over there?
Dude, honestly?
- Yeah.
- Yeah?
It's right up on
the water, though.
But it's covered in brush
and I don't see animal
trails going down to the water.
Here I come.
It's a boma already.
Oh, dude.
We got plenty of tree coverage.
Should keep us out of
the sun on the hot days.
I'm not seeing animal tracks,
slides from crocs going in,
I don't... I don't see
anything in this spot
that indicates that
animals travel this pathway.
So let's make this happen.
- Yeah? Let's just do it?
- I think so. I think so.
Yeah, that's good.
I am securing the
waterfront along the pond
because crocodiles easily
could just crawl
right up and get us,
so we're gonna make a fence,
and then, we're gonna secure it
with a bunch of thorny
bushes in front and behind it.
That's a good wall.
Making a thorn wall here
to keep any of the predators
or other large
animals out of the way.
We made a good boma.
Yeah.
- this.
- We can't get in.
No one wants to come in here.
I'm feeling really
excited about our boma.
The next stop is gonna be water,
and it's gonna be
a lifesaver right now
because we are thirsty.
It's not catching.
Why does this a*s won't catch?
It is just moist.
The grass is deceptively moist.
It feels like it's
dry on the outside,
but once it even takes the
smallest amount of flame,
you can start feeling
the moisture in it.
- Sam.
- Yes?
We need some dried elephant.
Yeah.
-Oh, yes.
-Tender turd b*mb.
Tender turd b*mb.
You put that in there?
That's right. Put that, like, on
top of it, with the...stones, yeah.
Fluff it with all
the other stuff.
Maybe we can make
a little teepee on it.
All right.
- All right.
- There we go, there we go.
There we go, there
we go, there we go.
Here's some little this.
elephant poop.
- Yeah?
- Yeah, that was the secret.
Elephant poop just
took. I didn't even...
- Nice work, man.
- Yeah. Thank you.
Teamwork.
My partner, Sarah, is rad.
I'm gonna go get you
more firewood, you got it.
I think she's incredible.
I like her personality.
She's got great energy.
You know, trying
to figure out the fire,
we got to problem
solved together.
I think that's super huge.
All right. We got our
first sip of water here.
Drink water.
How's it taste?
- So good.
-How'd you do it? Why'd you do it?
All right.
That is nourishing.
Tastes great.
It tastes like...
It tastes like survival.
First night in Africa naked,
our boma feels very secure.
Protected.
And you're gonna put
the water on that, too.
Just heard a snake moving around
underneath our boma wall.
-A deadly puff adder.
-Oh, my God, yeah.
- Did you see it?
- Yeah.
Be careful
Okay. Wait. I hear him. Shh.
Oh he's right here.
He's right here.
Oh, my God.
Where the did he go?
I can't see.
A puff adder is wandering
around our shelter
and we are now
pinned into our shelter
because we have to stay in here
for safety reasons at night,
you know, for all the
other dangerous creatures
that are in Africa.
Oh, my God. He's coming.
-Hey.
-Where is he? Did I get him?
No.
Dude, I had to have hurt him.
There he is.
Just here, you b*stard.
You hear him?
It had to have dropped down.
You mean he's in
the water, you mean?
Yeah, he's gone.
That was pretty terrifying.
Welcome to Africa.
So it's night one.
Sarah and I are still here.
Both of us alive and kicking.
The puff adder
was spooky as heck,
but we did it, we ran it out.
Thank God.
I still think it's
fair to stay alert
of any sort of animals that
can come through our camp.
For sure.
I was thinking a lot tonight
about how much I miss
Izzy bear, my little girl.
Give her a little message.
Hi.
Hi, Izzy Moon.
Mama's here.
What's up, Izzy?
We see the moon right there.
It's our first night at camp.
Almost gonna howl at the moon
with my new friend, Sam, here.
Looks like you're getting
some good materials
- together for your fish trap.
- Yes.
If you need help with that,
I'm more than happy to help you.
But otherwise, I think
I'm gonna take the bow
and go walk around
and see what there is
while it's still cool.
Okay.
And hopefully find
some food today.
I would love that.
Somebody better feed
me before I get hangry.
Or the world will pay.
Hot.
It's only day two, but
we could use some food.
I'm hoping to find some
sort of game animal,
some mammal with some
decent protein source,
kudu or something like that.
Warthog, anything really.
I'm planning to stay
out of the water entirely
because there might
be an adult crocodile
coming through
here or already here.
And, uh, I don't want
to deal with those,
if I don't have to.
I just came across
these prints right here.
Fresh leopard tracks.
Looks like the danger's
not just in the water,
it's on the land as
well around our camp.
So, head on a swivel.
Today, my priority is
definitely a fish trap.
When I got sober,
I had to find things
to keep my mind
and my hands busy,
and I had to stay
away from other things.
So, it was the perfect
opportunity to go out
and be alone in the woods.
Go sit by a river bank
and making basket traps.
To make my fish basket,
I'm using cut down
branches as sticks
for the structure of
the basket as spokes.
And I'm also making
cordage from the Mopane tree.
This will be good
tying material to tie off.
And then, I was wrapping leaves
in and out of the
spokes of the basket
to make a cone-like structure.
For bait, check this out.
It's a big a*s larvae right
here in the spider nest.
It looks like caterpillar.
See that guy?
It's a caterpillar gusher
and the fish won't
be able to resist it.
All right.
Here's what it looks like.
Hopefully, they swim in the hole
and they can't get out.
Well, there's
terrapins, I'm hoping,
that will crawl in here.
Think there are little crabs
that would maybe
love to go in here,
and I hope there's
catfish out there.
Yeah, it looks like muddy
water that they would love.
Hopefully, it works.
I've been out here for hours.
I've seen no animals. Zero.
I'm thinking why
I'm unsuccessful
in this area right here
is because I'm directly
downwind from my fire,
and I can smell the smoke
blowing right through this area.
And if I were an animal,
that would be a sign for me
to stay the away from here.
I'm really hungry.
Super hungry.
Super hungry.
We want a catfish in there, huh?
I want anything in there.
I want meat. I want
meat in the fish trap.
Nothing.
I'm a big guy.
Usually into, you know,
So going in for three days
without eating anything,
that's harder than I
thought it was gonna be.
Eighteen more days.
You just have to keep trying.
I wanna keep working on fire.
All right.
Keeps going out.
Holy.
What?
Croc right in
front of our house.
Where?
Did you see that
dark spot right there?
Yes. Oh, my God.
Ah, look how close he is.
He's just chilling right
outside of our boma.
- What a big croc.
- Can you believe that?
We were in the water
just earlier today.
-That's freaky. That's freaky.
-Terrifying.
Got to keep an eye out.
These guys can show up anytime.
We just need to make sure
the perimeter's reinforced,
like, on the water side.
I'm not gonna sleep
tonight with that out there.
I can't sleep.
I'm like wide awake.
Yeah, I'm hearing
some rustling behind me.
There's something out there.
Holy!
what the hell?
Oh, my God.
All right, so it's like
and Sarah and I just heard
what sounds like a leopard.
Grunting in the same spot
I saw the fresh leopard tracks.
I wish I could show
you something out there.
It is a little alarming
because leopards
are... They're freaky.
They could sneak their way
into our boma if they could.
It's not much more
likely than a lion.
It did. The danger is real.
It's naked and it's afraid.
Holy crap.
What the hell?
Something large
jumped into the water.
Oh, my God.
Freaking terrifying.
We went through a
lot of wood last night.
Yeah, we went
through everything.
Coming in hot with a
giant piece of firewood.
Ooh, good one.
Last night was rough.
An apex predator
right next to your boma,
it's terrifying.
I freaked out, and then,
I started to like get
the panicky thoughts,
and I'm like, "Oh, my
God. Is this worth it?"
Like, "What am I
doing? What if I got bit?"
And I'm like
thinking about like...
being a bad mom.
It's like, you
might... You know?
It feels like a risk
that's, uh, maybe not
worth it when that happens.
But I already decided I
was gonna take the risk.
That sucker right there will...
That's enough for tonight.
I think that when Sarah
made that comment
of Africa just got
real, real last night,
I started to get worried
because of the fact
that I'm a parent as well,
and that I'm here doing this
whole experience for my son
to give him something
to be proud of.
But if we hurt ourselves
for this, is it worth it?
No. It would never be.
Off to greener pastures?
Just wanna go see what's...
- out there. - Yeah.
You know, we're all
gonna hit those walls.
I mean it's already day four.
We've had no food at
all, but without any food,
we're not gonna make it 21 days.
There's no way.
So this morning, we
decided to venture out
and kind of go a
little bit further away
from our camp than we have
to see what else is out here.
- Super fresh.
- Oh, yeah.
Yeah. The freshest
scat we've seen.
The wettest.
I'm really hoping that
there's huntable stuff out here.
If there's a chance that
we might actually get
some real meat,
something really to
eat, and that would...
that would just help
carry us so many...
You know, so much
further, so many more days.
Just keep our eyes out.
- That'd be great.
- Let's go.
Put this on so we're ready.
Ssh.
That was exciting.
I'd love to get a goose.
They're all right there.
There's three ducks or geese
or whatever the hell they are.
Waterfowl in the water.
This is ridiculously
good fortune.
-Get 'em, get 'em.
-Ssh, ssh. It's not.
Here.
It's okay.
Sarah and I, we're in
a starvation situation
and, you know,
it's disappointing.
Going home. Defeated.
Thank you.
I want to be able
to provide food
at a rate that would
keep us sustained,
but I'm not getting it done.
All right, let's head back.
It's getting hot. I need water.
I'm out here to prove
to the people in my life
that I'm more dependable
than I have been in my past.
I'm really tired of
letting people down.
We'll check the
fish trap on the way.
All right.
Hold this one quick, I'm
gonna put this in my bag.
Be really careful.
Oh.
What do you see?
The crocodile.
Sarah, get out
of there right now.
Jesus. This freaking crocodile.
We hear them all
night and all day
getting all my food.
Eating all the fish,
that we can't even
check the fish trap.
So frustrating, dude.
How are you feeling
right now, Sarah?
Uh, I'm feeling terrible.
Yeah? What's wrong?
What's going on?
Sweaty.
Super tired and I'm frustrated.
Being out here in
a situation like this,
do you ever wish that you could,
you know, drink functionally
without it being a problem?
No.
Sometimes I wish
that I could do that.
I dig that.
Yeah.
Last night sucked.
We were sitting there
sulking, struggling.
It was brutal.
Part of getting sober is
learning perseverance.
Every freaking day,
waking up with a plan.
How am I gonna survive today?
But it's getting harder
to get through the suck.
We got to check the fish trap.
We need sustenance,
but scared of the crocodile.
Oh, my God.
Are they gonna like eat my legs
when I'm checking this?
Is this even worth it?
I have no experience
with crocodiles,
but I know that they eat humans,
and they're quiet, and
they go underwater,
and you can't see in this water.
It's terrifying even
to wait out there.
Ooh, that's a hole.
God, please.
I really want to get something.
It's terrifying.
You can't see in this water.
I haven't checked the fish trap
because of the crocodile.
There's a fish in here.
Holy!
There's a catfish.
Woo!
It worked.
Hell, yeah!
We got a catfish.
All right. Now,
we get out of here
so the crocodile doesn't eat me.
Thank you, catfish.
I kiss every fish I catch.
Honey, I'm home.
Is that you, partner?
Oh, my God, Sam.
What's happening?
Sam, we have a frickin' catfish.
Look at the size of it.
Oh,.
Yeah. It's a lot.
That's a lot.
We have a lot of meat.
Oh, my God.
- Now, we got dinner.
- Now, we got dinner.
Day-five meal. Super huge win.
Super huge.
And I'm so frickin'
happy and grateful
because I put a lot of
effort into that fish trap.
Oh, whee!
Holy.
That look good.
That looks stupid good.
And it really just warms
my heart to be the provider.
Just look at all that meat.
Yeah. There we go, homie.
Cheers.
Oh, my God.
It's gone.
Oh, my God.
Mmm.
Looks like it's all
flaky and delicious.
Yay!
Mmm. Solid meat.
We need that.
Bad.
Huge win.
I'm very grateful for protein.
It's such a confidence booster,
because this is gonna
make things a lot easier.
It's like fatty.
I love the skin.
Um, instantly, I feel
like it went to my brain,
like the omegas and stuff.
Delicious.
Let me tell you, like
starvation is the best flavor.
Sarah and I have worked out
our dynamic inside the pride.
In Africa, the male lion
provides safety and security.
My lioness right here,
she feeds us,
and I love her for it.
She's great.
Yup. Best catfish I've ever had.
I'm glad you caught a fish
'cause I was getting worried
I was on the menu next.
I was worried.
Look at all the
meat on this leg.
Look at that meaty leg.
Not yet, Sam.
Not yet.
Nah, we're good.
We're fam now.
You couldn't get
rid of me if you tried.
Fam, fam.
g*dd*mn, I'm cold.
I'm freezing.
The wind just picked
up and it's cold tonight.
We piled all the wood on,
so we're pretty much
out now, unfortunately.
Oh, my God.
During the day, it's hot.
During the night,
it is freezing.
Then on top of that,
I'm just on the ground
waiting for the croc to come up
and me into the water,
because, you know, all day long,
I've been thinking about how
deadly the Nile crocodile is
and... Yeah.
It's scary. It's cold.
It sucks.
Last night just
wrecked me mentally.
It's the wind. Made
it out of control.
I agree.
That woodpile went fast.
And just 10 minutes,
sleeping at night
is kind of rough.
I'm worried about my partner.
This challenge is
definitely hard and difficult,
but not getting sleep
really has Sam down a little.
I hope he keeps it together.
This is gonna be the post.
Yeah, after a week out here,
our bodies are like going
through that switch...
of like going into starvation.
Eating that fish just
like wasn't enough
to get us through.
And I'm having a
lot of hunger pains.
We need to figure out a
substantial protein source
to carry us through.
We're gonna make
a figure-four trap.
It's called a figure-four
'cause it's in the
shape of a figure four.
So I'm gonna carve a post stick,
do some notches
so it'll hook there,
and then a cross one like that.
So that's what it'll
look like when it's set.
And this is where the
heavy object will rest.
The big rock, preferably.
And this is the
trigger, the bait stick.
So when it gets
knocked out of this notch,
the whole thing collapses
and the rock falls.
Maybe we'll catch a shrub hare
or perhaps like a small...
Like a ground rodent,
mice, something like that.
Yeah. Anything really.
A bird even would be dope.
I'm physically
depleted right now.
I feel like my body has
started to go into catabolism
and that's where I start
using muscle tissue for fuel.
It's a new one.
It's, like I said,
uncharted territory for me
and I'm learning how to deal
with that minute by minute.
Being able to catch
a bird of some kind
or whatever we might
be able to catch with this,
it'd be huge for us.
Damn. My stomach hurts.
I really hope that
gets some food.
Some game would
be frickin' awesome.
Every.
What?
croc.
He's back?
Yeah.
Sitting right there.
We live next to
a Nile crocodile.
I sleep naked on the ground
with a crocodile neighbor.
It's terrifying.
Larry is what we've,
you know, coined him as.
Could come after me at any time,
and there's nothing
in my current skillset
to prepare me for that.
This is what makes
Africa a different beast.
Where on Earth else
do you find a predator
that could hunt you
down and k*ll you?
Damn. He looks deadly.
Holy crap.
Oh, my God. Two more.
. Oh.
Okay.
This is crazy dangerous.
I am freaking out.
Let's keep a eye on him.
Yeah.
Yeah. He makes me nervous.
All right. It's wicked
early in the morning,
and Sarah just woke me up
because there's some
lightning and thunder.
She's concerned.
Now, I'm concerned that
some rain is coming our way.
And we are, last minute,
trying to make some
renovations on our shelter
to make sure that we
don't get soaked out
and we don't
lose all of our fire.
Trying to make the fire bigger
so that we have big embers
and, hopefully,
it doesn't go out.
Yeah. We're chugging our water,
in case we have to use
our pot to hold a coal
to make sure that
our fire doesn't...
Get completely doused out on us.
'Cause we can't like
deconstruct the boma
to make a shelter
underneath the boma,
so... And we can't
leave the boma
to go get more material.
Christ.
Holy!
That thunder just
cracked right overhead
and I just about myself.
The loudest thunder ever.
Yeah, this is where we're
gonna sacrifice our bedding
and, I believe,
our ground right?
Yeah.
Yeah. That's the deal.
I'll turn the camera
off, try to keep dry. Bye.
We got a badass
piece of this hardwood.
Yeah.
Last night was horrible.
We had a surprise thunderstorm.
It lasted hours.
When the thunder clap,
you could feel it in your chest.
Absolutely miserable.
This challenge is harder
than I thought it was gonna be.
Much harder.
But that fire that I had
for doing this for my son,
it's still there and it's
burning strong and bright.
Damn.
We both woke up like
just spirits destroyed
from that torrential
downpour all night.
But I am not gonna let it
break me down or get me down.
I learned through my
recovery, just keep pushing.
One day at a time.
It's literally one
day at a time.
All I know to do is keep
trying to get some food.
Man, leaving the house is...
Chill out in here for a
minute and take a nap.
I've never been
this drained before.
All right.
Let's go Hey, just
be really careful.
Okay.
Kind of concerned about
the animal behavior around here.
There's always things
that know you're here
and are watching you
way before you know.
They're bothered by
human presence, I guess.
We're loud and stinky,
and everybody knows.
Look at that guy.
Pretty bird right there.
Dang.
I knew this was gonna be hard,
and I signed up for it and
I wanna... I wanna do it.
I'm just feeling defeated.
My partner is not doing good.
I'm worried about him.
I'm worried about us.
Everything in Africa
is on the menu,
so everything is like extra keen
at not getting eaten, right?
So they're hyper-alert,
hyper-aware.
So the trap, it's not
catching anything.
The fish basket isn't
catching anything.
Everything's well-adapted
here to survive.
And I'm just coming
in with no experience,
trying to catch it all.
And they're probably
all laughing at me.
And I will leave this
for when we get back.
Yup. Got a pot
of water to drink.
Let's move our wood out
so it doesn't just
burn for nothing.
We both woke up
like just worn out
and frickin' starving.
We're not even
on the struggle bus.
We're being dragged
behind the struggle bus.
So we decided we need
to venture out further
and check out
any other resources
we could possibly
find out there.
Let's find some new food.
Plan is to be heading
up towards north,
keeping the sun
on our right side.
Yeah. That's the only
way we know it's north.
Here we go.
Suck it up, buttercup.
Damn it.
It's hot.
Let's not spend too much
time in the direct sunlight.
Yeah.
Don't forget to
look in the trees.
- There are like--
- Bird nests.
-Yeah. In the holes...
-Yup.
where there might
be beehives or snakes
and scorpions and everything.
I would love to just see
a frickin' snake slither by.
We're walking for hours
and I see no sign
of anything out here.
You see nothing?
I see nothing.
Where the are all the animals?
We can't see anything.
It all looks the same.
Just a giant
tree/shrubbery landscape.
The sun's getting up high.
We need some water.
I think it's best to head back.
All right.
All right.
Whoa!
- Hell, yeah.
- Wow.
We have to carry that back.
That's the k*ll we
were looking for.
Sam, I'm worried you
keep walking to the left.
This is my first time
through this area.
I just know I'm
trying to keep the sun
on my left side and, you know,
- All right.
- Wanna come through this way?
'Cause, eventually,
we gotta go to the right.
Yeah.
Every damn thing here
looks the same, so it's like...
Your head starts spinning
and the heat gets to you.
You're thinking about water.
You can get lost out here easy.
I'm pooping out.
I'm feeling hot and tired.
I'm feeling really
dehydrated right now.
My mouth is dry.
We gotta get back.
We gotta get back.
What, this way?
I don't know.
- I think we're lost.
- I think we are lost.
It's okay. It's the heat.
The heat. The heat.
We're gonna figure it out.
Well, are you worried
about getting back home?
Yeah.
Holy.
What was that?
I just wanna get
the heck outta here.
What was that?
That sounds like a lion,
but he's really far away.
I don't care.
I just wanna get
the heck outta here.
Ooh. That was
like adrenaline rush.
Now, I feel like I'm gonna puke.
I just about myself.
I see nothing. We
were walking for hours.
I've had dry mouth
the whole entire time.
Walking trails
usually lead to water.
And the worst thing you can do
when you're lost is panic.
What about this way?
It's like there's a
small game trail here.
There's hoof prints
underneath, so--
Yeah. I see animal tracks.
- Let's follow this.
- Okay.
All right. Here's
a little trail.
Hoof print.
We found it.
Hey.
Oh, my God. Yes.
There we go.
We went the right way.
Woo!
My brain, I try not to listen
to it but it gets
filled with doubt.
Here's our pond.
Right now, I am so
exhausted and hungry.
That was one hell of a hike.
I'm hot. I'm exhausted.
Right now, I'm happy
to be back here,
and lay down and
have a sip of that water.
I didn't know how far I
was gonna have to hike,
to waste effort and
energy foraging.
We found nothing.
Not a single plant.
There's not a dandelion.
There's nothing.
I'll let you take first
crack of the water.
I'm overwhelmed
and I'm exhausted
and depleted, and
I'm still starving.
Just trying to get food
has been so taxing.
You just wanna pass out.
This is not good.
I agree.
You know the daily drill.
Firewood, firewood, firewood.
Yeah.
In a lot of nights, we burn
an exceptional
amount of firewood.
We've gathered all the firewood
that's close to our boma,
so now we're having
to venture out further
with less energy to
gather the firewood
that's gonna keep us warm
and safe throughout the night.
It's a lot. It's a lot to...
It's a lot to deal with
when you're starving.
You're telling yourself
the whole time,
"This is worth every bit
of energy I'm spending."
Trying to figure out how
we're gonna get food.
I'm gonna need some rest.
My energy levels are
completely exhausted.
I can't physically put
out any more energy.
I'm... At this point,
my game plan
is do not exert myself
so I can make it to day 21.
My big thing about
coming out here
was to give my son
something to be proud of,
because I've been...
Hard to hold a job.
He prayed that, you know,
I would find something
that I could do
that I wouldn't quit.
I will be willing to do
the brunt of the
work for the firewood.
I mean, obviously,
we have to have fire.
Water's really the only
essential that I need.
Just water and sleep
until I get out of here.
And I know that I will
tap early if I push myself.
He is really concerned
about overexerting himself
and having to tap out.
Anyone can sit
here without food,
but that is not the
way I want to do it.
I don't stop
just 'cause I get
tired or it sucks.
I'm gonna keep
pushing until I can't.
And I don't know what
that breaking point is.
I have to check the fish trap.
I'll be right back.
All right. Good luck.
Thanks.
Life isn't easy.
It doesn't get easier just
because you're sober.
And I source a lot
of strength from that.
And I'm trying to
translate that now
into this physical
realm of survival
to get through the hard times.
I'm a grateful alcoholic.
My partner, she's
pushing herself.
She's very tenacious
as always, ambitious.
She's constantly
trying to get food.
She's pretty hardcore.
She's got a different
strategy than me,
and I don't... I don't
knock her for it.
It's a different strategy.
I can feel this
challenge taking its toll.
It is to be expected.
I'm not surprised.
I can feel it.
I can notice
every little bit of it.
Check the fish trap.
I hope there's no
crocodiles in here.
Let's check it.
Are we lucky?
No lucky today.
You hope every
day and it's like, ugh,
every day I get crushed
by that g*dd*mn fish trap.
Ow. leech on my foot.
Look at him.
I felt him.
Oh, God. Okay.
Another one.
It's a big one.
Oh, God. There's two...
Three on me.
This one I can't get out.
Jesus Christ.
I guess we're gonna
eat leeches later.
They are just like a slug,
essentially, which is protein.
Like people eat snails
all over the world, right?
Escargo.
Ooh, there's a big one.
Got him.
Disgusting.
I never thought
I would be trying
to catch leeches to eat.
This is a new one.
Little blood bags.
It's like eating fleas.
Okey-dokey.
Blackened leech.
There is like dried
blood coming out of it.
That's gross.
Oh, it's not dried. It's wet.
That's gross.
This is like a
blutwurst sausage.
-Do we have those?
-Yeah.
In Germany?
Gross.
It's full of blood
in the middle.
My blood, I guess,
so it's not as bad.
I got two more in here
if you wanna try one.
Nope. I'mma pass on the...
pass on the eating leeches.
I am not surprised about
Sam being finicky about food.
I mean, I don't prefer 'em.
I'm not going out
to look for 'em.
I'm not gonna go
home and eat 'em.
I'm just like full-on
survival "feed me" mode.
Something about eating
a little nasty parasite,
some bloodsucker. Not cool.
Until you're starving in Africa.
I'm really hungry.
I was thinking
about food all day.
So, today, I'm gonna make
some fishing line
from some cordage
because we don't
have any string.
So if we're gonna go
fishing, we need a fishing line.
How extremely incredible.
Look at the fibers in 'em.
And they all pull so evenly off.
The fibers of this
African succulent
are known for their
strength and were often used
for making bowstrings and rope.
Sarah will twist
the fibers together
and use a thorn from the
buffalo plant as a hook.
I'm gonna make fishing
hook out of buffalo thorn
and tied it on this
bone we found.
I got a little handline.
I'm over here on the
other side of our boma
where we watch the
crocodiles on the shore all day.
So I'm conflicted.
I really wanna go
to the bank and fish
so my line goes down
as deep as possible,
but I also don't wanna
be trapped on the bank
if the crocodile comes up.
I'm gonna look at the next bank
and see if it's even shorter.
I'll come back.
Oh, God!
Oh, God!
Look at this!
Oh, my God.
Look at that. That's deadly.
There's Larry right
there 100 yards away.
It is risky, obviously,
to be over here
and try and fish
and try and stifle the
enormous fear I have
over frickin' crocodile coming
and pulling me under the water.
Super scary.
And even now, I'm
staring out of the water
and watching some crocodiles,
they're taking every
little bit of food they can
out of this water source.
I do feel like that's
one of the reasons
why we haven't been able
to collect any food in our pond.
Damn.
This looks like a
good fishing spot.
But the water is so murky,
you can't see like
an inch below it.
If there was a
crocodile or something,
I wouldn't see it either.
The risk factor is
outweighing my hunger.
I don't know what to do, Africa.
I just wanna eat.
Somebody help me.
I wanna go try and sit
in the blind for a little bit.
As long as I've
got water, I'm good.
Okay.
This is the line in
the sand for me.
I've been given an opportunity
to have my child's respect
and I'm tired of not
getting to the finish line.
I'm really tired of
letting people down.
I have a good
relationship with my son,
but I feel like those things
tether around my success.
I don't want him to
look at me as a quitter.
All right. Well, I'm gonna go.
I'm making smart choices,
saving energy in the tank.
I'm gonna make it to day
Frickin' starving.
A bird would be incredible.
Sam's strategy is to drink water
and just, you know, wait it out.
For me, that is not an option.
It's a last resort.
I don't wanna be vindictive.
I don't wanna be resentful.
But, of course, there's
a little part of me
that's like, "You
gotta get a bird.
Like you gotta get a bird
and hold it up in Sam's face
and be like, 'suck it.
Like I got bird.'"
You know, the idea of hunting
is sitting in the
blind for two hours
just doing nothing.
It's not even an activity.
While I'm back here
actually collecting firewood,
dragging hundred-pound
logs back to the boma.
And to think that that's what
she's been doing everyday
while I've been back
here doing harder work
is upsetting to me.
disappointing one.
But it was worth the shot.
You know, again, this
is helping my partner.
This is the sacrifice
I'm willing to make.
I'm gonna use the
firewood that we have
to just boil water, and
that's part of my strategy.
Yeah. It's the trade-off.
I got my arrows, got my bow.
All right. Well, I'm gonna go.
- Yeah.
- Bye.
- Bye.
- See you later.
He always has some
water ready, the fire.
He's good at that.
I might as well
hunt for a little bit.
It keeps me trying
and being optimistic,
'cause I have to
counteract this negativity.
And there's nothing
I can do about it,
so I'm just in a phase
of accepting the situation.
Her fish trap paid
off, at least, once.
But the bow,
bow hunting that she's
trying to do every morning,
it's not... It's
not working out.
I'll have firewood and I
will have water every day.
And we already have
a shelter every day.
So that seems like...
That checks all the boxes
of everything that is
a necessity to survive,
'cause if I'm not here
trying to be a survivalist,
I think I'm making the
wisest decisions to survive.
One of those pigeon
bird things is really close.
Damn it.
So exciting and then
it's so disappointing.
I had a really good shot,
probably the best
shot I've been offered
this whole time and I blew it.
Damn it. Damn it. Damn it.
Gotta go check the fish trap.
Right now, I'm about
to check that fish trap.
I can't just not check it.
What if there's a fish in it?
terrifying.
All right. Here's the trap.
Hmm, are we lucky?
Damn.
I'm frustrated.
I can't catch a fish again.
Frustrated I can't sh**t a bird.
I'm super-emotional, I'm
super-tired, super-hungry,
but I have pulled out
myself out of the fire before,
and I sat through some
really uncomfortable,
terrible, painful so.
I'm gonna make it,
I'm just scared how
I'm gonna take it.
It's horrible.
It's horrible.
My forte at home was foraging.
This is what I do at home.
I'm gonna meander, you know,
peruse as I go, I'm not rushin'.
Whoa!
What?
Oh, no way.
No way.
It can't be.
This is the potato plant.
This is the real deal, I think.
What the hell?
Oh, my God.
So it's time to dig.
Hell, yeah.
This is exciting!
What a score today.
Oh, my God, it's huge.
So this, a potato,
is a freakin' starch,
the giant carbohydrate.
This is like a substantial
energy provider.
It's wiggling.
Oh!
I got one.
The potatoes are
making me crazy.
Yeah.
Check this bad boy out.
Hell, yeah.
Like I'm doing the thing,
like, it's working, you know?
It's really cool.
It's hard.
It's hard to survive.
And...
it just gives me hope.
I got three giant potatoes.
Exciting.
You know, let's take
a look. I know there's...
I know that there was two
different kinds of potatoes
that are out there, one
you can eat, one you can't.
-Oh, no, really?
-Yeah.
One kind is
definitely not edible.
Well, let's hope
it's not that one,
because this was heavy
and exhausting to dig up.
Look at these.
What is that?
This... Is this the potato?
This does not look like a potato
now that it's come
apart of my bag.
- No. This is...
- Like it...
This is the thing
that's not edible,
so you can't eat this.
This plant is
mother-in-law's tongue,
a root vegetable that
resembles a potato,
but contains a
chemical called saponin
which can cause
vomiting, organ failure,
and even death.
Dude, I thought
this was our win.
I'm so mad.
I'm so sorry, Sarah.
I'm so sorry.
It's okay.
I just wanted some food.
I'm sorry tired of being hungry.
Well, I think it's gonna rain.
Mmm-hmm.
The biggest issue is the rain.
It multiplies the
amount of firewood
that we use to sustain
a fire and warmth
and be able to boil our water,
which are, you know,
necessary things out here.
I don't wanna get wet and cold.
I do not like this rain.
I don't wanna shiver.
I don't wanna not have a fire.
I don't wanna be went and cold.
It's pretty stressful.
And not have food,
I've never gone this
long without food.
I can't believe my
body is still functioning.
If it rains all day,
we're just gonna be stuck
in the shelter, I guess.
It sucks.
Here it comes.
Here we go.
And it's picking up again.
The fire, just keep it going.
I'm also being
extremely resourceful
and adapting to the situation,
putting this concave
log over our coals.
So the top is all wet,
but underneath isn't,
so we were able
to restart it easily.
It's still wet but...
Could be worse.
It's nice to be by the fire,
you know what I mean?
Here's the boma weather station,
we can expect scattered
showers throughout the day.
No chance of foraging.
Yeah.
Forecast for tomorrow?
Completely unknown.
Just trying to picking up this.
It rained for hours and
hours and then it stopped.
I'm gonna build a
debris hut rain shelter
between the two
trees at our camp.
And hopefully we
won't even have to eat it.
Are you not helping do this
because you don't
think it's worth it?
Yes.
You don't think it's worth it
-to make a rain shelter?
-No.
Why?
Because I don't
think it's gonna work.
And for as far as the fire goes,
already proven that
if we can have fire,
we can keep wood
dry and burning.
I don't know.
What... I don't
understand, dude.
So if the fire goes out,
you don't think having a
rain shelter is a good idea?
I don't think the
fire will go out
and no, I do not
think it's a good idea.
I'm so frustrated
and bitter right now.
I hate this feeling.
I'm not trying to
be condescending,
but shelter is like bushcraft
Yeah. Yes.
Then I don't know
how you don't see
the importance of it.
- me.
- I didn't...
I'm not trying to upset
you with my answer,
just answering your question.
I'm feeling very
defeated, pessimistic,
not in a positive mental state.
It's the fight-or-flight,
the panic,
the traumatic stress,
whatever you wanted to say
that you're dealing
with at the time,
I think the first thing you
should do is try to relax.
Sam's strategy
is very frustrating.
I truly do not
understand his logic.
Everything is a waste of time
if it doesn't produce an
immediate, like, result.
He said he's trying in
working towards that,
and then you get to succeed
but, I need to just remember
to be compassionate.
Oh, my God. The rain's coming.
More African rain.
I am at an all-time low.
I've never been this hungry,
I've never been this tired,
I've never been this, uh,
you know, aggravated.
There's nothing we
can do to stay dry.
Sarah built this rain shelter.
It doesn't keep you dry
and it's too far away
from the fire to stay warm
and your body temperature
drops drastically.
Tonight, sleep will be not
possible in this position.
It's the loudest thunder
I've ever heard in my life.
The sun's out right
now, I hope it stays.
Grumpy, worn,
drained, took a lot
of energy last night.
Well, just food-procuring time.
Try to get food first actually,
that's all I'm gonna
do, and then hydrate.
Do stuff keep trying.
All we have to do is
make it one more day
and support each
other and get outta here.
Twenty-one days is not
even a blink of an eye
-in your lifetime, right?
-Yeah.
Don't be a p*ssy...
You can do it.
That's it right there,
that sums it up.
Yeah.
Top three most difficult
things in my life ever,
having a baby,
getting sober,
and 21 days naked
surviving in the African bush.
Yeah. I second that.
We are so close.
Yeah, we really are in
the hours of countdown
to the finish line.
Let's do 21 days.
Through my recovery,
I've learned that
just practicing over the years,
like, you can't just
sit in that space, man,
you gotta do somethin'.
All right, I'm out.
See you later.
The rainstorm, I
don't know, put a...
Just put a shock to
what I was going through.
It is a culmination of
the starvation and fatigue,
and I hit a wall.
That's typical me,
is to get to a spot
that's difficult or
uncomfortable,
when I don't feel like
it, I don't do it anymore.
You can even see
that in a lot of the ways
that my strategy has gone,
it's only now that
I'm realizing that.
I have people I don't
wanna disappoint.
Uh, you know, I owe my
son a no-quit situation.
I wanna get out there and
fuel myself and my partner.
This is the last push
to make things happen
and really go hard,
and to go down
paths I haven't gone,
I'm gonna explore
places I haven't been.
I'm ready to, you know,
really, really give it all.
Ooh, a lion out here.
I'm really terrified
we didn't hear the lion,
but obviously, they were here
because you see
giant tracks everywhere,
it kind of alarms me
a lot that we don't...
we don't hear
these giant creatures
that are literally a stone's
throw away from our boma.
That is a big paw.
Kind of a Mopani worm,
a couple of 'em, a
couple big juicy ones.
The Mopani worms
out here that...
In this area, they
might be a delicacy
and not for everyone.
But you can't be choosy
and I'm not gonna
be picky right now.
Just on the worm tree.
Give this ugly little b*stard
something to eat
while in my bag,
so they're less
inclined to escape.
You know, this hungry,
you don't leave
food on the table.
Hope you're all
playing nice in there.
I'm really excited for
my partner to get back
and I could just surprise
her with some Mopani worms,
which is an excellent
fuel source for both of us.
Eat Mopani worms.
Mmm.
Hi.
What's happened then?
Food it is not easy to find.
Yeah?
I'm so tired to be hungry.
And I'm worried about our hike.
I've wasted so much energy.
Have some water.
I will. I'm starting
to gather myself.
Shut up!
You did not find
all these. Look.
Well, it's not a
total loss today.
Cheer up... Where
did you find so many,
-from their nest?
-I found a tree...
I found a tree
that there was this
they were... All on
those were on one tree.
Oh, my God, they're so big.
I am gonna leave
Africa with a belly
full of Mopani worms, and
I'm so proud and thankful.
I never thought I
would come to Africa
and that's what would
save me here, but it feels like
this is what's gonna
save me in the end
and get me outta here.
Mopani worms.
Delicious.
Mmm.
They're really good.
I was blessed with
a great partner.
I have been unreliable,
you can even see that
in a lot of the way that
my strategy has gone,
it's... And, you
know, about myself
and I understand that,
and I owed her an apology.
You tried hard every day,
and like you said, you know,
you keep trying to teach me,
you can't win if you don't try.
And you were trying every
day and I'm so grateful for you.
Thank you.
We're gonna be all right.
The night of the
Almost extraction day.
This will be my last diary cam.
Done.
The lion, it keeps getting
closer and closer but...
Sam?
Hey!
Hey!
Hey!
That suck, but it's over.
Thank God.
We're outta here tomorrow.
Let's make a toothbrush break.
Look, this is the gauri thing,
where you can make a toothbrush?
You wanna see it?
From the gauri stem,
you just cut it and mash it.
And then the ash and
water will be our toothpaste.
My mouth is, like,
beyond dragon breath,
it's rhino breath.
Feeling funky?
Like a rhino pooped in it.
Oh, nice.
I'm gonna scoop
a little of this ash.
It feels good.
All that tuck it back.
How does it look?
Looks clean.
Nice.
It actually has a
toothpaste texture too.
Day 21, we've got
lions circling our boma.
So weird.
The lion over there,
and it was super-close.
It was moving from
that side of the pond,
that corner over there,
just back and forth,
pacing and grunting.
That sucks, that freakin' sucks.
I feel nauseous.
I don't know if it's from nerves
- or what but--
- Probably.
I feel a little nervous as well.
Just excitement, just...
- Queasy. - the unexpected.
Getting past a certain
perimeter of our area
in the freaking bush in Africa,
you know, it's terrifying.
It makes me a
little uncomfortable.
Okay. Let's take
a look at the map.
This looks like
that we're right here
at the center
of this little pond
and then directly north
is where we're headed.
Right there.
- Straight off that way.
- Yeah.
Right.
I'm concerned about the lions.
It's terrifying,
it's like they always
know that you're there
before you know they're there.
-They're super-scary.
-Yeah.
The extraction hike is daunting
because k*ller lions
constantly hunting food.
The odds are not in
our favor at the moment.
- Let's roll.
- Let's rock and roll.
To make it to their
extraction point,
Sam and Sarah must trek 4 miles
through thick
thorn-covered terrain.
They will have to be alert
and ready to react quickly
to any lion activity,
which will be hard to spot
in the natural camouflage
of the African bush.
Listen out for lions, homie.
Yeah, you bet.
We're in lion territory.
Freakin' terrifying.
Oh, man. I'm feelin' it.
My legs kinda feel
like deadweights.
They're getting
heavier and heavier.
Hold on a sec.
- Hear that?
- Yeah.
All right.
I know we've been at this
for two and a half hours,
an hour at least.
My legs are tired,
my arms are tired.
My stomach hurts.
My mouth is so dry,
so dry like the desert.
Tired.
Freakin' tired.
In the last 21 days,
Sam and Sarah have
shared only 1,400 calories
but they will burn 2,500
during this 4-mile
extraction hike.
My knees feel like
they wanna buckle
every time I have to
climb up a little rock.
Or go down one.
Put extra focus on every step.
Do not fall over.
I see nothing. We
were walking for hours,
no sign of anything out here
that even remotely
resembles our destination.
That's a little disheartening
because I am skunked.
Tired, legs are sore.
Looking forward to collapsing
whenever we get to
where the hell we're goin'.
But not a moment sooner.
over this riverbed.
Me too.
The most difficult thing I
overcame in this challenge
was being able to battle
against my own mindset,
the things that's creeping
in my mind that tell me
I can't and tell me
that it's okay to quit
or, you know, the excuses...
The child in me, I think,
is the best way to put it.
I got to let the child die
and let the man emerge.
I'm ready to move
forward from all that,
you know, try to be a
better role model to my son,
to give back, you know, to
be supportive and not quit.
One boulder at a time.
I keep almost losing my balance.
Keep leaning forward so
you don't fall backwards.
Yeah.
This is steep.
Yeah, this is a climb...
I see some sort of big
rock formation in front of us.
- Yeah.
- I don't know
if that's what we're looking at,
but it's the first one I've seen
that's even remotely
close to what is on the map.
Oh, wow.
That might be it.
It's a big-a*s rock formation.
Yeah.
dude, what do you think?
I think
we're gonna keep pushing
up around this corner.
I feel smoked.
I feel a little dizzy from
pushing up that hill.
Tanks got just a little bit...
I mean, the empty
light just came on.
We'll crawl up
here if it takes us.
If I break my legs, I will
army crawl to the top.
I see a higher rock right there.
Yeah. Let's get across
and... It's the highest one.
I will take your hand now.
Mmm-hmm.
I gotta rest, Sam.
Let's sit up here for
a second, figure it out.
All right.
- Do you hear that?
- Oh.
Here comes the bird.
Oh, my God.
We made it.
- Oh, my God.
- There it is!
You think that's our ride?
Woo!
We made it!
Hell yeah!
We're done.
Yeah, buddy!
That's gotta be the
most beautiful helicopter
I ever saw.
Son, I did it! We did it.
Sarah and I did it!
I cannot believe this right now.
This was intense.
A challenge in every single
day to make it through.
I can't tell you how many times
I wanted to give up
and I'm so glad I didn't.
I kept my promises and
now I get to go home.
I cannot believe that I
did it and I didn't quit,
I made it all the way to day 21.
I need to go home and look
at my son's prayer journal
and
know that between God
and I, we answered his prayer.
What more could I
ask for as a father?
Become the man that
I should be by now.
You know, better late than never
but I'm really excited
to start that journey.
I'm coming home.
You're awesome, partner.
Yeah, man. You too.
I know we were gonna do it.
I told you, day
one, no quittin'.
No quit, no quit.
My MO in life is
progress, not perfection.
I did my best and
it was good enough.
It feels freakin' awesome.
Oh, my God, it's over.
I don't regret the
path I've taken.
It was hard and it was rocky
and there were
a lot of mistakes.
But without every choice
that I've made up until now,
I wouldn't be here.
My formative years
were hard for a reason
and they made me strong enough
to finish this challenge.
I just feel like I'm
in the right place
in the universe,
doing the right thing,
and I'm gonna continue
to try my hardest
to do the right thing.
Don't need that anymore.
Twenty-one unforgettable,
unbelievable days,
naked and terrified
in Africa, and we did it.
I'm so stoked.
Over the course of 21
days, Sarah lost 32 pounds.
Her primitive
survival rating rises
from a 6.2 to a 7.3.
It's a hell lot of writing
on this experience.
And doing it successfully,
these are the most
incredible tears of joy
I've ever shed in my life
besides the day
that my son was born,
and just being able
to give something
else to him, you know?
Sam lost 35 pounds.
His PSR rises
from a 5.9 to a 7.1.
This has been an
incredible experience.
Africa, thank you
for everything.
Thank you for every hard lesson.
