working in a library?
- You get every walk of life
coming in through the door.

People come in because
they don't have internet.

and things like that.

- I've worked it.
I've also taken my kids to it.
I love them.
- It really warms my heart
that Bri takes her children
to drag queen story times.
She feels like the type of mum
that, like, a kid deserves.
And that, like, that in
itself really warms my heart.

- I became a librarian
when I was 17,
so I've been a librarian
for 16 years now.
But I was a kind
of shy, q*eer kid
that loved libraries and books,
and they were my safe spaces.

so it was where I lived.

I'm sort of the same.
I had that big, big old set
of encyclopedias on the wall.

- My first impressions of Morgan

he is more reserved.
So I think I've got a really,
really big responsibility here.

not just helping us

But overall,

is doing it on the main stage.
And Siva's something that
I haven't done since
I was a little kid.

really, really grateful for.

of "Drag Race" for the first time.

do is we're essentially going
to figure out how
we can sort of put
character in the costumes
that we've got.
So I think your energy
to sort of really tap into
is these things are
giving you hell.
- That is not hard to tap into.

We're working on this persona.
And it sort of clicks that I'm
like, oh, my God, why don't we
just lean into the fact that
he's severely uncomfortable,

excited for today?
- Um, the whole makeover thing.

I've never been in drag before.
- Sharing the magic of drag
with someone is so special.
It's really exciting to see
someone who's never experienced
it before experience
the magic and the art of drag,
and see what emerges from them.
When I'm in drag,
I feel the most at peace.
I feel most myself.
It's done so much for me,
and I'm happy that I get
to share that with you today.
It's going to be so good.
- I feel it.
- So, yeah, do you have any
experience with drag story time?
I know it's a very
political topic.
- It is a political topic.
We always face controversy
when we do drag story times,
because there's
always those people
that come out of the woodwork.
- I find it so weird
that story time has become
this political chess piece
that everyone's
using to say that, you know,
drag queens are,
like, grooming children to what,
become part of our community?
It makes no sense.
- It's a lot of internal hatred
from those people, I think.
And if they just came
along, sat, and listened in,
then they might get into it.
You never know.
- Well, that's the thing.
And I know like, you know,
there's been naysayers
in Sydney especially, that
have actually gone to an event
and left with
a different mindset
because it's just not the case
of what they thought it was.
It's giving everyone
a bit more visibility
on the fact that there's nothing
inappropriate about just saying
it's OK to be who you are.
Were we not groomed to be
straight our whole lives?
Were we not shown
heteronormative relationships,
forced to see boys and girls
kissing, getting married,
being told that that was the story?
Well, I'm a flaming
f*cking h*m*.
That did nothing for me.
Why has this become such a thing
that we're so hyper-focused on,
when there's
a billion other f*cking
bigger issues to talk about?
- Every drag queen we've
had come into story time
has just been the most
wonderful, colourful...
you see little boys and girls,
their eyes kind of light up.
All they want is
the glitter and the colour
and the celebration.
There's some little kid
out there
in those rural communities
that goes in and finds that
and understands a bit more
about their identity,
and that's what
libraries are doing.
- Yeah, exactly.

- I hope I didn't
teach you something
that you already know.

Like, my Siva is...
like, my Siva knowledge
is, like, really nothing.
Like, my mother, before I
came here, she was like,

do you ever identify on any
level with, like, fa'afafine?
- Fa'afafine is,
in Samoa, someone
who is female-presenting
but not female-born.
But fa'afafine is
also a broad term.
The term fa'afafine can also
refer to someone who is trans.
- Fa'afafine is
like a term that I'm
quite comfortable
using on myself,
just because I
know I've got some
of those effeminate qualities
and mindsets about me.
- Yeah.
- But how do... do you
gel with that at all?
- Well, I don't know.
I feel like when
we were growing up,
I wasn't really too
sure of who I was.
Especially moving
to New Zealand,
I really kind of pushed my...
my Samoan side aside
and really tried to blend in.
Growing up,
my parents kind of...
I mean, they're not stupid.
They knew that I was fa'afafine,
or they knew that
I was very feminine.
And I guess it wasn't
really something
that they wanted to admit
to or wanted to accept.
And when it comes to drag, like,
I'd probably say
more recently...
- Yeah.
- I've come to accept that.
Because I mean,
you know, I do drag.
I'm... I'm very feminine.
I think the more I did drag
and the more I did Nikita,
and then represented
my culture through Nikita,
I guess I just realised
that I never used the term
fa'afafine to describe me.
I think being here
and representing my culture
on a regular basis, I think
that just made me click
that, yeah, maybe I might be.

I think I would have liked
a kind of wider kind of story
that is maybe easier

I had no doubt

deliver characters,

Going to be honest, drag family
resemblance is struggling
a little bit for me.
You don't have to be twinning.
But I always like,
me personally, some kind of
tie-in where I can go,
OK, I buy it.
Even if it's just you
having a piece of white
and her having a piece of pink.
Because when you do
different hair colors
and different hair styles,
it automatically takes you
in different directions.
So, Splenda, what did you
learn from our Brenda?
- She was very, very,
very patient with me.
I come from a family of
people who talk way too much.
But when Brenda started
explaining the story to me,
I got it.
I got it straight away.
I knew what the story was.
And so, like, when
we put on the dress,
we sort of worked out
a few things.
Brenda is a little whiz
with the sewing machine.
I'm just learning to sew,
and I... and I,
like, literally, I think I...

I think I went to the toilet
and came back,
and she had... she had
tucked in my dress
and put a zipper in,
in that time.

about drag into somebody else.

was such a joy for me.
