09x03 - BMW M5 E39

Post by bunniefuu »

this is Wheeler dealers where we
find core classic cars that are past their

sell-by date and we freshen them up
I find the motors and I fix them up and

then we sell them on for a profit
well at least that's the plan this time

we're on the hunt for a car that's all
about power speed and performance it's

a motor that keeps its talents
hidden very well and one of our favorite

all-time drivers the iconic
badge on the back of this

BMW says m5 and that
means this is a performance car.

under the bonnet there's a hand-built
5-litre v8 from BMW's motorsport

division punching 400 brake horsepower
acceleration is supercar strong up there

with Porsche and Ferrari unlike a
supercar the m5 can be driven every

single day and it has another trump
car while the showroom price tag top

£60,000 good news ones could
be yours for less than 10 grand

I tell you that's mad money
and I'll be mad not to want one.

everyone knows about the BMW m5
charms drivers don't want a mega engine a

quality package and a low price tag
the year's top-end m5s make good money

and they get hoovered up really
quickly but they're no good for us

because we can't earn anything out
of them what I'm after is a car that I can

turn around really quickly and that
is a completely different animal so I'm

ignoring the 10 to 15 grand late
models with micro-mileages and

concentrating on the older cars
if I want a margin I need to be at the

bottom of the market I'm looking at
five grand which might get me a rough

2000 model year but at that money
only one car on an Internet auction

site fits the bill now the car is a 2000
year model it's in dark blue and from

the pictures it's a decent spec
the ad says it's got an extra 30 brake

horsepower but I don't know why
you'd need that in a car that's already got

masses of power but you never know
it could be the clincher a 5 grand m5

could have costly engine or
gearbox issues and if that's the case I

won't even look at the car but this
seller assures me the mechanicals are.

spot-on now that sounds all right and
the price is right so I am gonna go and

take a look but I really hope it's a
good one because I don't want to find

myself back here having to
start the search all over again.

you must be Carl Mike nice to meet
you nice to meet you come you're right

nice date to come and see a BMW
m5 and I'm very excited about lovely right

tell us about the car well I am
took it in as a part of a debt from a

friend and I've got five other cars I
haven't got time to drive it so it's a

bit of a waste that must have been some
death it was from some friends yes so.

okay see it just gets sat there and
unused yes which is a crime isn't it

for a BMW m5 really yeah I like
the color it's like that blue black

metallic it didn't look like that in
the pictures looks really good all right

well let's have a good look around
it let's start at the front and work

our way round the bonnet that looks
like it's suffered some damage in the

past doesn't it yeah it has and
somebody's filled that that's cracked it

looks now but Torvaldine they've
been ice-skating on it it's horrible so

that I need doing I'm talking a
cracking look fog lamp down there

that's right now that ain't gonna be
cheap is it for a BMW fog lamp no.

silly little things like that combust
the car you know the wheels nice.

wheels and they're huge but
they're really pitted aren't they and this

one's been curbs quite badly so that
need doing okay well what a minute

from there to there I found several
thoughts look at that something wrong in

the mirror as well yes the coasting is
coming away there what I need doing but

nice and straight down the sides no
signs of accident damage at all very

nice round the back I do like that
yeah presence doesn't it this car what

were the four exhaust pipes very
good wow look at that very very nice

indeed is yeah look at the buttons
God there's more buttons in the space.

right let's have a look familiar
BMW dashboard laid out in front of me

multi-function steering wheel
electric steering column not even that

works very nice and the M badge is
absolutely everywhere just to remind

you of what you're driving yeah
that's a bit weird there's something

wrong with the mirror isn't there yeah
it's quite common problem with these

and in extreme sunlight the liquid
bursts inside and it starts to leak out

that's what you can see there you
know I've never seen that before that's a

weird repair isn't it yeah can
I start right of course you can.

make some right noises this that
v8 let's have a look under the bonnet.

Wow look at the
size of that engine it's

like they found the
biggest engine they could

and wrap the car around
it yeah it's amazing the

engine ticks over
sweetly but there is a nasty

noise yeah that's the
bearings in the alternator

it all works fine it just
makes that annoying

noise just turn it off
turn it off a second

for me a rattly alternator
that's a real shame.

the alternator is so
far down inside this

engine my mechanics
hands are like shovels and

look at it there's no
space under this bonnet

that's gonna be a
nightmare a little bit tricky

a little bit tricky indeed but the engine
is sweet and you say it goes alright engine

is absolutely fine the
only other thing that

will need doing is the
rubber top mount because

it's near the exhaust
they tend to dry up which

a common problem so
it will need changing right

now gonna be dear aren't
they top rubber mounts

for a BMW m5 they're
gonna be cheap no but luckily

they're in the boot for
you well that's made

that job a little bit
easier all right well it

looks good doesn't it I'll let you can see
what that damages under the bonnet say that

yeah yeah and the soundproofing is missing
yeah so that'll make a difference to the

car won't it I'll tell you what the proof
is in the pudding and in one of these that

means getting me out on
the road can I take for a test

drive of course you can all
right I won't be too long okay.

if there's one thing you do before you die
drive a BMW m5 every single horsepower this

engine delivers and let me tell you
there's a lot of them can be used amazing.

now the real thrill of this car is being
behind that famous motorsport engine the

bellow coming from the
v8 is just fantastic and

listen to this second
or third already I mean

losing my driver's
license not to 16 comes up

in an eye-watering five
seconds and top speed

well it goes into treble figures and then
it just pulls and pulls and pulls this car

is absolutely mega clearly there's nothing
wrong with that motorsport engine but Carl

did mention something about the suspension
and now it's out on the road it's making

an awful noise up
front it's groaning it's

chattering and it would
definitely need sorting.

the gearbox oh it's
beautiful it's a six-speed

jet drag and it slots
into gear wonderfully.

so the question is do I want this m5 yes
I do I've made up my mind this is the car.

for me for a couple of reasons the first of
which being it just drives amazingly this

motor and it's got
everything you could possibly

want it's packed with
gadgets and secondly this

car has totally been
unloved I don't even

think anyone's polished
it over the last ten

years and I know that this car just needs a
bucket of love and I've got it to give cars

asking five grand for
it you know what I'm

like I'm gonna go back
and chip him and this

here I'll get on Wow what a pleasurable
way to lose your driver's license it's so.

and you are right on
the test drive there are

those noises coming
from the front suspension

there's also the alternator
noise and it needs

a lot more work you
know it needs all those

bits that we spoke about the bonnet needs
painting the wheels need refurbishing the

mirror inside all these
things mount up but what

worries me more than
everything is everything

with this is gonna be ludicrously expensive
so I am gonna make you an offer you wanted

five grand for it yeah I think it's worth a
lot less than that so I've got four grand.

maybe halfway four and
a half no I'm gonna say

from wire because
there's loads of others out

there and I'll be quite happy to walk away
and go and have a look at another one I got

four grand and that's
it otherwise I'm off

take it today now cash
yes yeah I just bought

myself an m5 the deal
is exactly what the doctor

ordered a BMW m5 with
430 brake horsepower

for 4,000 pounds that really is silly money
for such a serious car but BMW parts can be

expensive and things
could go wrong if this

car is hiding a secret
let me tell you a story

I heard about an m5
loved it and I bought it

I just bought myself
an m5 but this car needs

work with a full bag
of bodywork ailments

and a host of nasty
noises thrown in rattley

alternator that's a real
shame and slim margins

on the m5 means every
penny profit will have to

be earned I love BMW
v8 what engine absolutely

incredible but I'm not
gonna break back to the

workshop I'm gonna take a nice leisurely
drive through these country lanes let that

v8 just tick over a barely break a sweat
and the other thing is I don't want to bust

this car right now
because if I do ever k*ll

me right now let's get
down to business I paid

just four thousand
pounds for this fantastic

BMW m5 which was
cheap so I can't expect to sell

it for riches maybe six
thousand pounds what

we need to do with this
car is to look at every

single fault it's got
individually and address

them full-on and if we
can beg borrow and steal

the parts we will earn
some money at this old

car but the bottom
line is me and Ed get to

work on a faded but
spirited BMW m5 haha I can

hear that v8 coming a
mile away that's awesome

what do you think of
that then son eh? you're

right well listen Ed
what I've gone and done

is I bought us a whole
paddocks worth of wild

stallions and I've got
a car thrown in for good

measure but it's a
very cool car but it's one

of those sort of cars
that looks like it's a

sort of thing an
accountant would drive as a

daily driver and yet
underneath it's pretty much

a sports car isn't it? it certainly is look
Ed if I ever give up this car job when I go

robbing banks it's in this BMW m5 I'm doing
it it is so quick of course because you've

bought it it's probably
really broken as well

it's not really broken
it is probably the

cheapest BMW m5 out
there for the year 2004 grand

it certainly does but I
would say it's probably

the most unloved it's in
desperate need of some

TLC but you can see
that just looking at the

bonnet you can see all these kind of well
not even scratches they're like these sink

marks from the filler
where obviously there's

been a repair before
so that's gonna have to

be resprayed things
like this are annoying Ed

look that fog lamp at
the front that's broken

the alloy wheels which are lovely but every
single one of them has got a Mark on it

and they're gonna need
refurbishing so that's

a bit of a problem
this mirror look at that

what do you think that
is? see the glass? it's

not quite de-laminated
but water's definitely

getting in between
sort of the mirror and the

glass itself so we're
gonna need to change that

come and have a look at in here it's like a
an executive boardroom whoa that's actually

quite sophisticated
there is a knob a switch

and a button for
everything is even a knob to.

make that steering column go in and out
okay look at that and up and down how lazy.

this rear view mirror
is looking a bit weird

it's kind of liquid
inside it's clearly broken

and yeah but the guy
said it's quite a common

problem I've never
seen it before it looks

like the mirror is
broken so we'll have to

do something with that
yeah okay but that is

the least of your worries Ed open the bonnet
I know why wait until you see this Ed.

look that is a very smart looking engine
look at that how good is that ain't that

just smiling back at
you but there is good

news and bad news
about this motor okay okay

the good news is
usually stock at 400 brake

horsepower this one's
uprated to 430 and that

extra 30 ponies makes all the difference
but it does okay so what's the bad news

the bad news is the alternator is making a
horrible grumbling noise well that's almost

certainly the bearings
I knew that I said

bearings problem is
is it's all the way down.

there your hands how
your hands gonna fit down

there I don't know we'll
find a way but I think

imagine this lot is gonna
be coming up you're

gonna have to strip
the car down right the

other bad thing is as
well when the car gets

hot the suspension
makes this really weird

squeaking noise
doesn't affect the handling

okay the previous owner
reckons it was the top

suspension mounts is
included two replacement

parts that were in
the boot I think I'm

allowed to have a closer look at that no
worries okay excellent so you now know what

you've got to do you've
got to do quite a few

things so this is an oily
job some non oily jobs

and there's one other
thing all right could you

make it look a bit
younger and a bit meaner.

yeah I guess there's
kits you can change the

headlamps you can do stuff with the mirrors
you know just make it look a bit more

youthful and there's
one other thing of course

usually you have a budget like this but
when this car goes out on the market it's

gonna be in the sea of other BMW M5s and we
need to make sure our car is attractive and

we're gonna do that on the price and to do
that I do give you that budget to spend but

this time it's right down there so loads
of jobs loads of parts and no money for it

so thanks for that mate there you go
you got it let's get it in the workshop.

the BMW M5 is a car with a lot to say it
says I'm elegant I'm classy I'm super car

quick but don't like
to shout about it and

all of this says I'm a
performance car but I'm

another message from this beamer is crying
out for some TLC the first job I want to

tackle is the squeaking
suspension no punter

would buy a car
making a noise like that.

now the chap that
sold the car to Mike did

think that the problem
was coming from a warm

bush at the top of the strut now he did
seem to know what he was talking about but I

wouldn't recommend taking
somebody who's selling

a car's word as gospel
but having said that

he did supply the parts
that we need to change

over so we might as
well change them and see

if it solves our squeaky
suspension problem

the biggest challenge
here is access I need to

get to the top of the suspension so I whip
off the wheel and then disconnect the brake

caliper which is attached to the hub with a
couple of bolts I suspend the caliper with

a bungee to prevent the brake lines
being stressed then I remove the disc.

that gives me access
to loosen the ball joint

and then it's under the
bonnet to locate what

is scientifically known as the top nut of
course the first thing I have to do before

I undo the top nut is compress the spring
I'm compressing the spring to get enough

clearance to remove the top of the upright
you can hire spring compressors cheaply or

they're around 30 pounds to buy well now
I've compressed the spring I can now undo

the nut on the top of the strut and there
is our suspect mount so now I've got to get

it off the car I called
a couple of garages

and the labor alone
on this job could be over

200 pounds it should be doable at home
if you've got a decent tool chest a trolley

Jack and some axle stands okay well this
is our mount and to be fair it doesn't seem

to be anything really visually wrong with
it I mean there's a little bit of wear as

you can see the nickel plating has been
removed by the sort of the friction from

the rubber but the bit that would perish
would normally be this sort of rubber bit

here and actually doesn't look it doesn't
look great but doesn't look in very bad

Nick so I think perhaps this side there's
nothing really wrong with it but because.

we've got the new part it came with a car
I'll put that in at least then we know that

this side is okay at least as far as the
top mount is concerned and then start work

on the other side it's annoying that so far
I've not found the source of the squeaking.

but at least I'm getting a good look over
this car which has actually taken off the

standard production
line to be hand assembled

by BMW motorsport
let's see if the driver

side mount is at fault
otherwise I'll have to

dismantle the rest of
the suspension to find out.

what's wrong well here
we go this is our top

bush and it isn't actually
looking very happy

at all we've got this
kind of split where

the metal insert seems
to have kind of pulled

away from the rest of
the rubber so they have

a spun round or been
pushed if you compare

it to our new one you
can see they look very

very different so I think
once we put this into.

place hopefully our
squeaky noisiness should

have gone parts
supplied with the car would

retail for a hundred
pounds I haven't had to

visit a specialist which
means that so far this

job has cost us a big fat zero but there's
more work to do on our m5 and there's no

guarantee that the other
work will be so cheap

now it turns out we
were quite lucky to get

those parts included with
the car because one of

our top mats are
completely failed but whether.

it's actually sorted out the squeak on the
suspension we're not really going to know

until we've done a
test drive but I am pretty

confident now there's no
denying our BMW m5 is a

bargain motor but I
could quickly say goodbye

to that bargain price
if I got the part spend

really wrong because
phoning BMW for the parts

would really exercise
my credit card so I've

decided to go down a cheaper route which is
why I've come to a breakage yard in the old

days break yard motors
will be picked apart

straightaway now they're
neatly parked up and

the parts were only
removed when there's an

online request but you
can't do everything on

the web sometimes
it's worth paying a visit

to make sure that the
parts will fit and you

might be able to
squeeze a better deal you

out yeah I spoke to
you on the phone nice to

meet you I'm Mike I'm
right so I'm after some

parts of my BMW m5 I
understand that you're

the place to come to
yeah what I want to do

the car is give it a
more youthful look I've

got a 2000 BMW m5 and during that year they
did a model change where they changed their

headlamps to angel eye
headlamps when I spoke

to you on the phone
you said you might be out

welcome me out yeah
it was lucky you gave

me a call got one here
look at that now that

is exactly what I'm talking about see the
difference is you've got these rings around

the outside and they
give the car that more

youthful appearance
very very nice now this is

the second-hand part I don't know it's
gonna last I mean it's BMW part so generally

they're gonna last and
even insurance companies

now look at using the
second-hand parts we build

the cars really yeah
that's fantastic now to

buy these from BMW it
would be a small mortgage

about 500 quid each about a thousand pound
for a pair how much are you gonna ask for

um I'm sure we can look at friends pound
for the pair 300 pound at the pair all

date around sounds
like a bargain I still

need some updated
rear lights and fog lights

but I've got the all-important Angel
eyes at a fraction of the retail price this

cost-saving is absolutely critical
and the facelift on this car is critical

if we're ever gonna turn good coin on
this fantastic motor this Bavarian bouncer

is a performance car icon I paid just four
thousand pounds for this fantastic BMW M5

but making money on this one will be tough
because there are loads about between the

six and seven grand Mark which is where we
want to end up so a high part spend could

k*ll this conference and in every job it
tackles the state's rise a good rule of

thumb is not to buy a
performance car that makes

funny noises because
it can wind up costing

a lot to fix now in Mike's effort to buy a
car at the bottom of the market he's won us

a vehicle that winds and
groans nearly as much

as Mike himself the
suspension squeak is sorted

but the were from the
alternator is next on my

list on paper swapping
over an alternator isn't

that difficult but
getting to it is especially

on a car like this where
this huge engine is

stuffed into this tiny little space the
alternator is right down there and I think

I may have to actually
get to it from underneath

the car either way I'm
going to be removing a

fair few parts to get to it the air filter
in its housing need to be moved out of the

this filter looks a bit
mucky so I might swap

that later on before I
deal with the electrics

I disconnect the battery
which for the m5 is

in the boot now with
the under tray removed

I can finally see the alternator in least
some of its glory when it's spinning out

when it's running it
produces electricity which

runs the electrical
systems of the car and

including charging the
battery now it's driven

by the crankshaft of
the engine so obviously

the engine uses a little bit of its power
to actually produce electrical energy and

a few other things as
well you can see there

are two multi V fan
belts attached to the

crankshaft one side goes off to do the air
conditioning the other side comes down here

it actually powers
the power steering as

well and the alternator
there's a little idle

gear right at the top
there and this other

pulley here is actually
the belt tensioner so

obviously to get the belt off which is what
I need to do next I will actually need to

try and remove some of the tension from
the belt tension I can do that with some.

The fan belt is
spring-loaded and to release

the tension I need to
back the pulley off which

I do blind that will slacken off the belt
and then it should come off that's the hard

bit the alternator
itself is held on with a

couple of bolts when
an alternator misbehaves

it's usually off to the recyclers but the
recommended replacement for this car is 500

pounds so I really
need to fix ours instead.

Well I finally got the alternator
out of the car but why it's called an

alternator is because this magical thing
actually makes AC or alternating current

when it's spinning around and there's
a little box of tricks on the back which

converts that back
to DC or direct current

which is what the battery
needs and of course

so do the electrical systems of the car the
problem with ours it sounds awful because

I think the bearings
have failed inside anyway

I can really tell is
by actually taking the

whole thing apart to
remove the multi V pulley

I use a specialist tool
called a puller it has

three prongs which
grab behind a pulley or

flange and then forces
it from the shaft using

a screw thread this is
a lot safer than using

some pry bars or
worse still screwdrivers.

to be honest if you tried using another
tool you're likely just to break something.

the alternator has two
bearings a smaller one at

the top and a larger one
at the other end of the

shaft with the housing
out of the way I gently

prise off the dust cover
then I get the puller

onto the first bearing
I turn the alternator

over to remove the
other half of the housing.

and with some persuasion I grab the second
larger bearing and extract it now I've got

the bearings off the
alternator the smaller one

well it may have been
slightly twisted as I was

actually pulling it off
the shaft there but it's

all kind of seized up
it's not very good at all

the bigger bearing
sounds terrible obviously

all those round ba*ls
in there are no longer

round they've got loads
of flats on which is how

you can hear that kind
of noise when you spin

it up so either way these
are both scrapped so

I need some new
bearings and these only cost

25 pounds which
is directly in line with

Mike's economy drive
these new bearings should

outlast the car so top
tip don't throw away

whole components it's
just too wasteful why not

take things apart and
see what's wrong listen

to that you see you
can't hear anything

because it's working
perfectly and that's actually

a pretty nice cheap
fix as well didn't have to

buy a whole new
automator and now once this

is back in the car our
engine should be nice

and quiet getting the
alternator back in is no

picnic but now I've
learned the exact way to

twist and push it into
the tight recesses of

the engine bay it only
takes me 10 minutes

compared to the half hour it took me
to remove now for the moment of truth.

that was a pretty smart fix nice and cheap
and very cheerful so now our m5 is cured of

its whining and it's grumbling
the same thing to Mike.

how's it going then with a barnstorming
BMW m5 well it's okay but as with all the

cars you give me kind
of sorting out those

noises and grumbles
and stuff it's obviously

never been quite
plain sailing all this gray

hair is down to you
mate I don't mean it's

all down to me and they say gray is the new
black and I've got to say it don't suit you

well where I'm at as I've sorted out
the alternators and now it's as quiet as a

house or at least as
quiet as an alternator

should be and rather
than wasting 500 pounds

on a new one I just fixed the bearings it
only cost us 25 pounds oh that's fantastic

good work Ed and that's the kind of noises
I like to hear so well done oh that's all

also sorted out the top
mounts of the suspension

one of them was actually
perished and now all

those kind of rattles and groans have gone
as well fantastic so we're well on the way

with our BMW but
that's the work that you've

done but there was
some other work that I.

asked you to do yeah
and one of them was

maintaining the look of
the BMW m5 but giving.

it a bit of a more youthful
appearance giving

it a bit of a facelift so
I've been out and I've

done some work for
you and look what I've got

I've got these wow angel
eyes oh thank you very

much people often say
that about me but yes

you're right these are
angel eye headlamps for the

BMW they will give it
that youthful appearance

but not only that Ed
these are retrofit and

they'll bolt straight
onto the car so all you

got to do is screw them
on and we're good to

go so another nice
easy job for me then it

is a nice easy job and
we're well on the way.

there with our BMW and if you keep it up
at this rate I reckon we can drop some good

coinage into the old piggy
bank I might hold you to that sir.

Mike's quite excited
about the fact that

when this car was
launched it was in the same

ballpark price wise as
a Porsche so he's quite

chuffed that we've got so much car for so
little cash but bear in mind of course the

reason we didn't pay
very much money for our

M5 is because it's certainly not
the most presentable on the market.

I've gone over the
mechanicals now I need to

deal with the problem
areas on the exterior.

this bonnet has obvious crazing
which really hurts the car's desirability.

now the first thing you
notice looking under

the bonnet is there's
no sound deadening but

beyond that you can
see all these kind of

dents in the metal work
I think what's happened

is somebody slammed
the bonnet on some tools

that were perhaps
left on top of the engine

that's obviously dented the bonnet that way
so then to fix that they then smacked the

dent back in from
this side filled it in with

a whole load of filler
perhaps too much too

quickly and then a
slightly bad paint job over

the top of that and
then couple all of that

with the heat from the engine you end up
with these cracks forming in the filler and

the paint sinking into that and it doesn't
look very good at the end of it first thing

to do is get rid of the
paint I'll use a medium

grade Sandy disc to
strip away the top coat

and the filler soon the
whole car will be taken

to the paint shop where
they will refill prime

and then paint it in
the original color but

before I do that let's get
these corroded damaged

wheels off and sent to
the refurbishers I could

get them painted in stock
colors but I'm tempted

to try something a bit
more exciting the car

needs to be mobile
to get to the paint shop

so while the old wheels
are being sent away

I've borrowed a tatty set of 5 series
wheels which will keep it rolling.

now Mike has bought me
some upgrade parts and

most of these come
from the face lifted version

of the M5 so I've got some rear lights but
the thing I'm most interested in are these

headlight units here
now you can see they've

got the angel eyes on
there which is this kind

of light ring that became
so much a trademark

of the BMW now buyers
of cars like this want

a lot of bling for their buck as well as
the performance so this is a good buy.

the light clusters have two bolts at the
top and two bolts deeper in the engine bay

and getting the cluster
out is a five minute job.

that's the good news unfortunately
there's also some bad news.

now the only thing
about this new light unit

is that the wiring
loom is slightly different

thankfully obviously
you might manage to get

one with a bit of wiring
loom attached so that

makes it a little bit easier so here is one
that came with the car if I just unplug.

all these connectors and I can compare the
difference so first of all we've got our

one where I guess it's either the headlight
or the high beam and you've got another one

here those two are the
same so we've got two

left so then we've
got this little one here.

and that one there
so that's the same so

basically the one this
one here is for the halo

and this one is for
the car's side light and

you can see clearly
they're very different so

what we have to do is
cut this connector off and

actually solder this
connector onto the car's

wiring loom the only
other problem I've got as

well that this little
connector down here is.

actually for the indicators
and unfortunately

that is also different
to the connector that

comes with the new
light unit so I'll also

have to modify that as
well but then it should

pop together beautifully
and work a treat it's

not unusual for upgrade
or retrofit parts to

need some modification
top tip always ask for

the wiring connections
with any electrical part

and if you can't tackle it yourself pay 50
pounds for a mobile automotive electrician.

after the two connections
have been soldered

together seal with a
section of heat shrink

insulation finally the new front
lights can be bolted into place.

after going to the
trouble of upgrading the

front lights it makes
sense to do the rears as

well until that end mica
sourced these rather

nifty looking aftermarket
units now you can

see they actually echo the angel eye system
you've got these four light pipes in there

and they're going to look really rather
sharp when they're back on the car.

these light lenses at 80 pounds each include
a new housing with a block connector.

so no soldering required
much better I think you'll agree.

just one more to go the clear lens
late model fog light was 75 pounds.

so now I've done all of the
lights let's see how they look.

oh they look much
better I can't really say

we've taken years off
the car just yet because

there's still loads to do but this is
definitely a step in the right direction.

the BMW m5 is a legend
in performance motoring

I bought us a whole
pallet's worth of wild

stallions it's always
going to be a challenge

to make any money on
a fairly plentiful car like

this the only way is to
make the price attractive

so we've been under
enormous pressure to keep

our parts built down so far we've managed
it but that's all about to change because

I've just had to cough up 500 quid for the
bonnet respray we're well on the way there

with our BMW and if you keep it up at this
rate we'll be at a drop some good coinage

into our piggy bank look at that the car's
come back from the paint shop they've done

a wonderful job on the
bonnet but they've also

mopped and polished
the rest of the car so the

whole thing looks fantastic
and also our wheels

have come back and
you can see we've gone for

that lovely dark gray kind of g*n metal
metallic which actually is a bit of a risk.

because the stock
color for these cars is

silver and if you go too
far from the norm you

can get in a bit of
trouble but I think it's

worth the risk because
it looks so fresh the

wheels are probably the
most obvious way apart

from the badge but you
can tell the m5 from a.

520i.

and what a stunning
difference they make with

the exterior looking
good I'm now turning my

attention to the gripes
on the interior now

we still need to contend
with this mirror it's

one of the things that
your eye is drawn to

when you first get
into the car it just looks

a bit poor because of this kind of liquid
falling around inside it so we need to get

it off and replace it
I've seen some chatter

on the forums about
these mirrors and it seems

to be a known fault the
mirror dimming system

is quite clever the unit
acts like a tiny LCD or

liquid crystal screen which
can be made to darken

when the front sensor
detects a change in ambient

light and on ours the
liquid crystal seems to have

leaked some m5 parts
are rare and Mike wasn't.

able to find us a used
mirror so we've had to

shell out a whopping
275 pounds for a new one

direct from Germany ouch there we go so the
mirror is in place so now let's test it out

so ignition on the
light sign just put my

finger over the rear
sensor look at that dimming

beautifully the wing
mirror glass is also

special edition and
also silly money new but

luckily Mike found us a used replacement
online but it was still 180 pounds.

a single retaining clip
holds the glass in place.

and now the last few items to satisfy an
eagle-eyed punter the sound deadening is

reinstated under the bonnet the prehistoric
air filter gets swapped for an uprated one.

and I've reached the
end of the journey with the

m5 it's done when Mike
bought this car he felt it

was probably the most
unloved m5 out there and

he was probably right
but not only have we fixed

all of its problems
we've given it the tlc and

the respect that a
car of this stature truly

deserves i didn't just buy this BMW i saved
it it was so unloved so needy of attention

me and ed were the best
thing to have happened

to it the proof is right
there in front of you

the m5 is leaner meaner
and cleaner i found a

super cheap muscle
car that the seller wanted

to ditch quick i
bought it for just four

grand all right that
deserves a little pat on

the back certainly does the suspension top
mounts made a horrible noise so ed stuck in

replacements that were
given with the car and

the m5 had one less
black Mark against it the

alternator that sung like a canary had 40
bearings the boy ed pulled this thing apart

to replace them did
it work of course it did

the lights were upgraded
to take years off the

car the bonnet was
re-sprayed and the wheels

refurbished and both
dodgy mirrors were swapped

over how much does the
mighty m5 oh the car was

four thousand pounds
paint work was 500 quid

wheel refurb 250
replacement parts at just

over a thousand pounds
so rim for 5 770 quid

good numbers wow look at these look at
the headlamps look at the bonnet and the

wheels and you've done it again it's very
impressive isn't it well it was always an

impressive car but it
just lost so much of its

appeal as it looked in
such terrible condition

but we've dragged it
back and now it's definitely

worthy of its m5 badge
ed you've peeled back the

years when this car was
new it would have been

about 60 000 pounds
if you park this today

in a BMW showroom
with a nice shiny salesman

standing next to it
it still looks like 60

grand's worth oh
whatever makes you happy

makes me happy it makes
me very happy indeed

I've done what you've
asked I've actually kept

the parts spent down
to an absolute minimum

and actually i couldn't have made this car
look this good spending any less I'll put

that down to German engineering and your
ingenuity now ed this car has always been

about his driving
pleasure and you do realize

there is a world outside
of these four walls

so what say me and you take our BMW m5 on
a nice quiet outing for some reason i'm now

feeling really nervous good well ed we're
at the place we need to be with our BMW m5

absolutely all problems
are sorted it's got a clean

bill of health it's ready
for its new owner no no

i meant we're literally
at the place we need to

be look around you ed
no police no restrictions

no speed limit it means me and you can get
intimate with a BMW i don't think you mean

intimate you mean
aggressive and i got one

thing to say about that
do not break this car

look behind you that's
two miles of playground

we're gonna red line
this car in between every

single gear this is gonna
be a treat for me and

a treat for you do not
break this car buckle up.

that sounds really
good doesn't it okay be

gentle be gentle let's
see how fast it goes.

already we are doing 80
miles an hour in seconds

see how quickly i can chew
up this two mile runway.

look at that so it's maybe 120 miles
an hour this is maxing out that's 150.

160. look how fast they're
going that's 170 miles an hour

why are we in the face we
are running out of our own.

that is a new Wheeler thing that pickled.

oh ed that is absolutely amazing
well done son well thank you.

but to be fair it's been
fun but what have we

proved what we proved
that whoever buys this

car is going to get a supercar for bargain
money suppose talking of money what are we

thinking what price
are we going well do you

know what it's a buyer's
market for the BMW m5

out there but then saying that ed this one
is in lovely Nick it's probably worth about

seven grand but i have
to be realistic i think

we're going to take a
little bit less than that

for it so i was hoping
six and a half grand

happy no it seems okay
and let's face it whoever.

gets this car they're
getting an awesome car

for the money as
long as they bring it to

an empty runway like
this one so the m5 really

goes but can i shift it i
advertised our beamer

for six and a half
thousand pounds and I'll be

honest with you for
the first couple of weeks

i had no interest at
all and i got two calls

from two guys within
an hour of each other

and they both wanted
this exact car in this exact

spec so i said to them
first i get down here

gets first look I've
got one all right then

John so what do you
think of the spec on this

then uh very good uh
angel eyes brilliant just

what i was looking
for power silver alloys

black leather interior
exactly what i asked for

well it was a bit weird
talking on the phone

it was like ticking
off a wish list of your

dream car i know
what it felt like the first

time i got behind the
wheel with this motor and

you've had a good test
driving it what do you think

it was powerful smooth
felt like a 65 grand

motor brand new oh
that's brilliant absolutely

brilliant so you know
I've advertised the

car for six and a half
grand which i think is

competitively priced
I've got quite a bit of

interest in it um so
do you think we can do

a deal if the numbers
stack up well they do

stack up i want six
and a half grand for the

car you love this motor
i know you do so what

do you say we just be
gentlemen about it and

shake at six and a half
grand come on John

six and a half grand
well it is what i want so

you got a deal yes you
just bought yourself a

BMW m5 brilliant even
with some costly parts

in the mix we've cleared
more than 700 quid

on a car that's difficult
to carve a margin on

i'm really chuffed with
that and i'm even more

chuffed with the car
from the first moment i

clapped eyes on our
BMW m5 i had a really

good feeling about this
car and i'm genuinely

pleased we've given this
motor a brand new start

i know that John is
going to Cherish and enjoy

this car for many years
to come if you want to

see more iconic cars
getting a star treatment

then join us again soon
on Wheeler dealers tala.
