Richard Rawlings and prodigious mechanic Aaron Kaufmann seek out forgotten and abandoned classic cars for restoration at their Gas Monkey Garage.

07x04 - Big Red Caddy, Part 1

Post by bunniefuu »

Last time on "fast n' loud"...

I hate this job.

Hot rod hunter Richard rawlings

and master mechanic
Aaron Kaufman

sailed off on a course

to build an epic

But a budget-busting interior...

...a motor too big to fit...

Y'all got the motor hanging
out of the front of the car.

...and one rusty mess threaten
to turn Richard's big build

into an albatross.

That sucks, dude.

Now it's all hands on deck

to get the Cadillac ship-shape.

But when one monkey
sets sail...

- Where are you goin'?
- None of your business.

...another steps
into the breach.

Coy better know
how to paint that car.

Then Richard

- goes hunting in Kentucky...
- Look at that.

...where he discovers
a barn full of ferraris...

- It says Ferrari on it.
- It does.

...then gambles a bag of cash

in one of the biggest buys
of his career.

I'm all nervous.

What's that?
Is that dirt?

Will Richard chart his course

- to a new gas monkey paradise?
- What the, dude?

Or will the big,
red Cadillac sink it all?

So I had a little bit
of a problem.

Ah, this sucks.

- Ah, you t*rd!
- You all right?

No, b*tch!

Right now I'm fitting
a Utah-shaped sheet metal piece

to fill in this humongous gap.

You know,
I've never been to Utah,

but I feel like I have now.

Got the whole state of Utah
as a patch panel.

You ever been to Utah?

While the rust repair
continues,

Jeremy's cutting the headers,

and I'm modifying the oil pan
for the steering link.

Whoo-Hoo-Hoo-Hoo-Hoo!

That definitely won't
hold oil anymore.

Feels like
a little submarine.

Richard's throwing extra money

at this '67 Cadillac, looking
for bigger, fatter return.

But what we've gotten so far

is a mess of rust, a major delay
in fitting the engine,

and one huge bill
for that sexy white interior.

Between 20 and 30,
I would say.

Needless to say,

Richard's not too happy about
how things are turning out.

But now,
with the mock-up fully complete,

we can pull the power train
back out.

We're a few days behind,

but this big boat is finally
ready to sail over to paint.

You ever been walking,

and, like, your socks
bunch up in your shoe?

Yeah, my underwear
is doin' that in my pants.

Richard has been whining that
he's going to be into this car

for around $75,000.

As far as I know,

there's no fat cat buyer
in sight.

Times like this when I'm happy
I'm just the mechanic

and not Richard's banker.

- Are we good?
- We're not.

No. Not really.

We okay?

Dang, that thing
was pretty long.

Yeah.

Where you boys at?

Standin' around,
drinkin' coffee like usual,

and I'm in there
Makin' money.

How's y'all's break goin'?

Goin' well.
Pretty good.

- My morning's going excellent.
- Good.

Sold the Caddy.
Where is it?

It's over in the body shop.

K.c.'s getting ready
to paint it.

Who's your buyer?

Raising cane's
is what it's called.

- Chicken place?
- Yeah, chicken.

- I've eaten there.
- I can tell.

For a second there,

I thought you were gonna
tell me colonel Sanders.

Jeez. Okay, well,
he's got some kind of parade

coming up,
the guy who's buying it.

He wants to put his dog in it
and drive around.

That's all I know.

So here's the scoop.

This guy Todd built a restaurant

that sells nothing
but chicken fingers,

and he named it after
his dog, cane.

Well, it was such a success

that it turned
into a really large franchise,

and he's got a big parade dealio
coming in just days,

and he wants an epic ride
for him and his dog, cane.

I think that's a great idea
with white interior.

Yeah.

I think it's
a wonderful idea.

As long as the check clears,
I don't care.

- Y'all just get it done.
- Hopefully, he has a white dog.

Break time's over.
Finish the car.

I don't think I've ever seen
a clean white dog.

**

Just hanging out
in the beer store today?

- Heck yeah.
- Get you to sign this for me?

What is it?

So a little while ago,
I went and talked to Richard

about some time off.

He kind of okeydo'd me
and agreed to it,

so I got my request form
all filled out.

I hand it to Richard.

I'm a little nervous about what
he's gonna say about it

'cause I know we got a Cadillac
to paint.

Dude, you can't have
any time off right now.

We talked about this, man.

It's already booked,
already paid for.

My wife and kids
will k*ll me if I cancel this.

Wife, kids, you know,

family, spring break,
what have ya.

Now he needs some time off right
in the middle of painting,

I guess... Size-wise,

maybe one of
the biggest cars we've painted.

- Who's gonna paint the car?
- Coy.

I've seen him paint
a few things.

I think it'll be fine, man.

- You think?
- Here at gas monkey,

there's never a really good time
to take off.

We're busy five,
six, seven days a week.

Coy can handle it.
I'll take responsibility for it.

Why do people
have to take vacations?

Why can't you just work?

'Cause you work
the out of us.

Yeah, but you don't see me
going off and taking vacations.

Coy better know
how to paint that car, man.

He will.

Thank you, sir.

So if he comes back from
vacation, the car's not right,

then it's his weekends

and his nights
that he's going to be eatin' up

because everything else
we've done to it,

we haven't scrimped a penny on.

We're spending a lot
of money on this car,

and the paint has got
to be perfect.

Who do I... who do I have
to turn in a request

for vacation time to?

My boss is.

**

Hoo. So here we are, man.

Kentucky... land of bourbon,
whiskey and stuff.

- Moonshine.
- I don't know about all that.

So gas monkey
is always looking for cars.

I mean, we get a lot of leads
through the interwebs,

phone calls, people send us
in pictures, et cetera.

And yesterday, we got a lead
on the old interwebs

that was a little
above my pay grade, so to speak.

The guy has a 1970365 Ferrari
in his garage

in Kentucky...
Louisville, Kentucky.

**

So there I was,
talking on the phone

to a guy about
a front engine v-12 Ferrari.

Now, front engine v-12 ferraris
are pretty special,

and they're highly collectible,

and this one's one of
the last ones built.

Fully restored,

this car could go
for a quarter-million dollars.

When you get a lead
on a Ferrari barn find,

there's a lot of guys
out there with a lot of money

that are looking for just those.

So you gotta jump a plane
and you gotta go fast.

I said the best I can do is be
there first thing in the morning

with cash in the bag
right there.

Maybe I've seen too many movies,

but don't think I'm not
a little unnerved

about driving around
these parts of Kentucky

with, uh, over 100 grand
in cash.

Dude, where are we going?

I feel like
I'm in "deliverance."

Well, we'd never found this,
that's for sure.

So far off the beaten path
nobody'd ever see it.

Golly.

- Look at that.
- There it is.

In the middle of Kentucky,

frickin' Ferrari
sitting in a barn.

That's awesome.

Well, this is where
you're gonna earn your keep.

Always.

You gotta tell me
what we're looking at.

It says Ferrari on it.

It does.

- Morning.
- Morning, how you doin'?

My name is Mike Whitaker.

Y'all wanna
borrow my flashlight,

- take a peek in there?
- Yeah, that'd be great.

My stepbrother's father

purchased the car
back in, uh, 1975.

He never did drive it.

It's always been
a restoration project.

It just never did happen.

Then he passed away.

It's been sitting for roughly
about seven years in storage.

So I didn't bring Dennis
along this time for his money.

Uh, literally,
I brought him along to make sure

this is the real deal car,

that it's unmolested
and original,

and that all the numbers match.

I'm buying this one.

Got it. That's it.

Outstanding.

Great car. Numbers match.
Very correct.

Golly, this car's
got 74,000 miles on it.

Let's just see if the motor
will spin over.

It's definitely not
locked up.

- No, it's not locked up.
- Just hit it one more time.

Okay, that's good.

I don't want to suck a bunch
of bad gas in, Richard.

Let's just leave it...
Let it alone.

'Kay.

The car is what it's supposed
to be, which is great.

Tools are in the trunk.

Actually, tool kit
for these cars is a big deal.

You know, I think it's a car
that probably

you don't have to restore.

I think you clean it up,
do mechanical on it,

and drive it like it is.

Very cool.

Bam.

Pretty neat car.

I like it,
but how much is it?

Well, probably let it go
for like 175.

Dude, I was really hoping to
get this for about 100 grand.

I'm here, I got cash.

How 'bout $150,000?

You're movin'
in the right direction.

Well, Dennis, I mean,

what do you think
I should pay for it?

I mean, I don't know.

I think it's a $125,000 car.

He says 125.

I got you to 150.

Where can we go from there?

I can do 140,

but that's just about as low
as I can go.

All right, let me... let
me talk to Dennis for a second.

Let me think about it.

You won't be stealin' it there,

but you just
can't buy those cars.

It's not going to make a bunch
of money for them,

and it won't lose.

I mean, I could make a quarter
on it, can't I?

- Probably, yeah.
- All right.

Let me get my cash.

If I want to play
with the big boys,

I can't split every big deal
with Dennis.

I mean, it's time for me
to sink or swim on my own.

This is, uh,
a big step for me.

One, two.
Well, I forgot the handshake.

- We got a deal at 140.
- Appreciate it.

I'm all nervous.

I've known you for a long time.
It's the first time I've seen

you actually shake when you're
giving somebody money.

Dude, it's 140,000 bucks.

The whole time I was pulling out
that money, I'm like,

"that's, like,
five cars to me."

I mean, that's five chances
to make money, not one.

$140,000 in cash,
just like we said.

- Oh, good deal.
- I really wanted to pay 100,

and we ended up
at 140 grand.

Did I steal the car?

No, I don't think
I stole it.

Well, man, Michael,
we appreciate it.

- Hey, no problem.
- Uh, you feel to count that.

I think this was a good deal.

Like I said, we inherited it.

So, I mean, that's

Let's get back
to Dallas, man.

You better be right
this car's worth 200.

I gotta
sell this thing fast.

So we're gonna get outta here
'cause it's rainy and nasty,

and I think this dog's
fixin' to eat me.

Coming up on "fast n' loud"...

It's your a*s if it's not right.

...the Cadillac build
has Richard seeing red.

What are they hiding under here?

And something
under the hood

turns Aaron's stomach.

What a pain in the rear.

**

So k.C. Gets to go
on vacation,

and I got to paint the Cadillac.

Everything's taped up.

I got my g*ns loaded.

It's time to show Richard
what Mike coy can do.

This paint job is getting a lot
of extra attention.

It's gotta be tremendous.

Richard's never seen me paint
here at the shop.

I'm pretty sure
that he knows I paint,

but I've never really
painted a complete car here.

He's a little nervous, but he's
always a little nervous.

You have to be on point
on your paint,

so if there's a problem,
it's on k.C.

K.c. Better watch out.

**

- Sorry, guys.
- Whoa, good game.

This thing is ugly.

It looks like an old Jaguar
to me.

There were only a small number
of these made.

Yeah, they're rare for a reason,
'cause they're ugly.

'Cause they rarely run.

When we were
checking out the car,

Richard told us
to only get it running,

don't mess with anything,
don't take anything apart,

get it running first.

He didn't want
to really take anything apart.

Since when do you listen
to him?

I never listen to him.
Let's take it apart.

What's he going to do, fire me?

I was looking for a job
when I found this one.

**

Everything on this car
is just different.

Thing's got dual oil filters,
dual distributors.

The alternators run backwards.

Instead of 'em... the pulleys
facing forwards,

they're actually
facing the engine.

They're completely backwards.

I'm not trying to figure it out.
Let's just start it.

Give it a little ol'...
Cough medicine.

No spark.

It's acting
like it's not getting fire.

Ooh, plug wires
are real brittle, real brittle.

I'm afraid to even pull
on these 'cause

these are Ferrari plug wires.

You know we'll never get 'em.

Richard said
don't pull those off, didn't he?

Yep.

'Kay them I'm definitely gonna
pull 'em off.

- Perfect.
- I'll pull it off, I don't care.

All right, have at it.
There you go.

Look. Didn't even break.

We're gonna do a real simple
electrical test.

We're going to poke
a screwdriver into the plug cap,

turn it over, and see if arcs
against the engine's metal,

or not.

Do it.

- No spark.
- No fire.

I've got an idea. Whether it's
good or not, I don't know.

But, Keenan, crawl under
the dash there

and give those fuses a wiggle.

Go ahead.

Grandma's cough medicine
worked again.

Yeah.

Sweet. Good job, guys.

A Ferrari 365 gt... $140,000.

Wiggle a fuse... priceless.

**

So I finished up the Caddy.

I think it looks
pretty damn good,

but the real test is gonna be
when Richard checks it out.

Hopefully I got a job
when it's all over.

I'm glad you chose that job,
because I hate that job.

I hate that job, too.
I didn't really choose it.

- It choose you?
- It chose me.

I think... I think
that job chose wrong.

Where we sit right now
on the 1967 Cadillac...

- Rock n' roll.
- We started behind on this one,

but we're catching up quick.

If everything
keeps goin' this way, you know,

we might just make the deadline.

Hold on, sir.
Wants some more pumps on that?

Right.
Probably lose some altitude.

Going down.

After a disastrous
first attempt,

the engine and transmission now
fit the Cadillac like a glove.

Good day.

Yeah,
heavy construction.

Hey, grab a hold
of this other...

And now it's a race
to get the car finished,

as Richard's chicken man
is winging it in here

in just a few days.

Does it not... does it
not freak anyone else out

that nothing holds the rest
of this car together?

Like, right here
in the middle.

Like, there's a...
Like it's 5 inches thick

and there's
nothing else there.

Convertibles thoroughly
weird me out.

**

K.c. Decided that he wanted
to take a vacation

with his family and kids,

but we're right in the middle
of the Cadillac build.

What's going on buddy?

Well, how was your vacation
with the kiddos and the wife?

Awesome. Relaxing.

I basically told k.C.,
"fine, take a vacation.

But if it's messed up,
it's on you, man."

Have you looked
at the paint job?

I have not.
I came straight here.

It's your a*s
if it's not right.

Nobody's called me
saying it's messed up,

- so I think we're good.
- I need my glasses.

You don't need any glasses
for this.

Yeah, you're probably right.
Hey, Christy!

Bring my beer goggles,
I gotta look at the paint job.

Looks good from here,
maybe.

Looks great from here.

I went
straight to Richard's office

when I came in this morning,

now he wants to inspect the car.

So we're gonna check it out,

and fingers crossed I don't have
to do any work on this myself.

- How old are you?
- I think you need a beer.

Yeah, I do.
Is that... what's that?

Is that dirt?

Just a little dirt.

This is a time cruncher for us,
'cause the people

that are buying it have
some kind of parade

they want to take it in,

which means the first time
it really actually gets seen,

it ain't gonna be
by one or two people,

it's gonna be by 100s or 1,000s.

Door jams.

I don't know what you're
stressing out about dude,

it looks great.

What are they hiding under here?

Um, I don't...
Hopefully the paint stuck.

It better be stuck.

Looks good.
I'm happy with it. Aren't you?

Well it's your a*s.

- You better be happy with it.
- Of course I'm happy with it.

What are y'all doing?
Picking my stuff apart or what?

He's saying you did
a great job.

Well, What'd you expect?
Crap?

At the end of the day,
paint job is frickin' awesome.

I mean, Mike coy nailed it.

This thing is perfect.

See? We're good to go.

You can go on vacation
any time you want then.

Thanks, man.

- I'll take this.
- What about my beer?

You guys have fun
working with this Cadillac.

Peace out.

What about my beer?

Um, you need to finish
working on your Cadillac, man.

**

We're close to getting
the car running.

Aaron's really eager.

He's pretty, uh, adamant
about getting it running.

Should be able to bust it off,
get it going,

and Aaron will be
a happy camper.

- Ready?
- Yeah.

Let's give that starter
a healthy a workout.

A bigger motor than that
probably needs a little more.

Yeah, half the can.

You want to get some real gas?

Let me go find...
Go find some gas.

Let me get some gas.

It ain't got no gas.

All right,
here's some gas right here.

Pour it right down the throat,
pour it in a bowl,

I don't really care.

So we had a pretty good week
putting the Cadillac together.

Not exactly
where we'd like to be,

but we're closing in on it,

and it's a bitchin' car.

Thing pounds harder than a fresh
stud first day on a porn set.

But as good
as that exhaust sounds,

there's something else
coming from the motor.

Uh, we've got a noise
that we don't want to hear ever.

That metallic clatter-y sound,
that shouldn't be there.

Cadillac motor should be
smooth as silk.

Instead, it sounds like
Richard's jewelry in a blender.

Fitting this massive motor here
already cost us several days,

and now we've got a whole new
mess of issues to figure out.

What a pain in the rear.

Coming up on "fast n' loud"...

We got a running car yet?

...just when he thought things
couldn't get any worse...

What the, dude?

...Richard turns up the heat
on Aaron.

Well... that's...
A little bit of a problem.

What a bummer.

What a pain in the rear.

We're in the home stretch
on this '67 Cadillac, but when

we went to fire the engine up,
there was a horrible noise.

And that noise tells me
that we're not home free yet.

First we're going check to see

if there's something
hitting the valve covers,

but there's not a Mark on them.

One thing to keep in mind
is that Cadillac

prides themselves on how quiet
and how smooth everything is.

This motor's not hot-rodded,
really,

and so this should be
a almost silent motor.

Noise is coming... it's not
coming from the valve covers,

so it's more than likely one
of those rods are loose.

I took a hard look at the upper
end of the valve train.

Because the noise
was so pronounced,

I expected to find
a pretty obvious problem.

It has to be that, man.

Nada. Nothing.

I didn't find anything
that jumped out at me,

like, literally or figuratively.

That leaves me
with the sinking feeling

that we haven't found
the problem yet.

Sometimes we
gotta dig a little deeper

or retrace or footsteps
to find it,

so we're gonna go ahead
and reassemble it.

Fire it up, and see
if the noise is still there.

- Turn it on.
- Let it rip.

Sounds just as bad,
if not worse,

which means
we've got a real problem.

What a bummer.

Richard's expecting this car
to be done in eight days,

which means we're going to have
to do much more invasive surgery

to figure out
what's going on with this motor.

Soon as it cools off,
tear down.

**

Red hot.

Remember when I said
they're hot?

Did you try to grab
one of those?

**

Oh, yeah!

That is what I am talking about.

Turned out pretty good,
didn't it?

Get you some of that, cowboy.
Wow.

So the guys
got the Ferrari up and running,

and now all that's left to do

is get buff monkey to do
his elephant wax magic on it.

That doesn't even look
like the same car.

It doesn't.

Holy cow.

- Cleaned up good.
- It's cleaned up very well.

Brian did a great job on making
this Ferrari look its best,

and just in time, too, because I
found a potential buyer

out of southern California
that is serious.

I understand he's got
a warehouse full of cars,

and I'm gonna go ahead
and roll dice,

ship the car to him

and let him inspect it
on his own, at his shop.

- A lot of hours into it, though.
- Oh, here we go.

You're already baitin' me
for money now.

Ten hours to hand Polish
those aluminum wheels out.

- Yeah.
- Couple days on the interior.

How much you wantin'
on that?

Um, you know, we're at
around $2,000, $2,500.

Everybody's got their hand out,

and I tell ya,
I've already pulled all the cash

out of every cubbyhole
and hiding spot I've got.

But you gotta spend money
to make money,

and this Ferrari, well,

it better make me a whole ton
of money.

I'm ready for the next one,
so send 'em on.

- Next one?
- Yeah.

I hope there's a next one.

Do we got a running car yet?

Yes and no.

Come on, man.

Yes to previously.
No to currently.

That's when things
didn't look so good any more.

As a matter of fact, they
looked kind of like.

We had a pretty significant
noise, valve train noise.

So we hunted a little bit,
decided to run it,

thought maybe we
had a stuck lifter, blah, blah,

it definitely wasn't that.

I thought we bought this motor
already ran, dyno'd, everything.

A year ago, yes.
And it sat for a year.

And so that's the thing,
is we couldn't, uh...

We couldn't nail down
without taking the engine apart.

So I'm super pissed off.

I mean, we ordered
carb to pan motor.

Perfect, ready to go.

I don't want to piss
the cad 500 guys off,

but I mean what the,
dude.

I would call up and go,
"really?

I just paid you $13,000
for a motor

that's supposed to be carbed
to pan, runs and duns,

and here's the dyno sheet."

And flat out, the motor was
built and run a year ago.

We called
and needed one right now.

- You remember that, right?
- Okay.

So we pulled one off the shelf
that had been sitting for a year

and I asked him,
I said "did y'all fire it

before you sent to us
or pulled it off?"

He said, "you said ship it,

so we pulled it
and put it in a box."

And so... and so we accept
some of that responsibility

when... when we call
and do that to people.

So there you go.

$13,000, $14,000 for a motor,
complete carb to pan,

now we're tearing pieces out.
It sucks.

Don't let these guys be
crawling around in the interior

when we get it in.
It's white.

Get on it.
You only got a week.

- Just start the bolts?
- Yep.

- And plug it in.
- 'Kay.

- And plug it in.
- Try not to scratch it.

You smell good
for this late in the day.

I need a ratchet

and I need your thing to point
in a different direction

than my face.

What size you got?

That's a personal question,
don't you think?

I'm talkin' 'bout wrenches.

Even though we're trying
to figure out

what the horrible noise is
inside this motor,

the rest of the finishing work
hasn't stopped.

I shouldn't have worn
tight pants today.

Richard's got his buyer
coming in

to inspect the car in six days.

If the motor
had been running like it

was supposed to from the get go,

this would all be gravy.

But we've been
swapping out parts for days,

and we're still not sure
what's wrong.

Gotta be honest.
I'm nervous.

Now we're gonna
give it one more gas monkey try

and see how she runs.
Hit it.

We've been over every cam
to lifter relationship,

every push rod
and rocker arm relationship,

and it's still not happy.

It's like these parts
just don't belong together.

However, the most ominous thing
is the nasty vibration.

Cadillac motor should be
smooth as silk.

Well... that's...
A little bit of a problem.

Oh, well.

It wasn't exactly going well,
anyway.

After going through
the valve train several times,

I was finally convinced

that there was
no fixing this externally.

The engine needed to go
the machine shop.

So instead of a...
Continuing to dig,

I said pull the motor out,
let's call the machine shop,

and let's get it over there.

I was really trying
to be very calm,

and, you know,
slow, methodical about this.

But I've just got a list
of too many things

that are really bumming me out.

The silver lining
to my dark cloud

is that Richard's heading to
Los Angeles to unload a Ferrari.

And since we're gonna
have to pull the heads off,

I decided to yank the whole
motor out, send it to Jaime,

have him tear down and rebuild
it before trip gets back.

We might have a chance...
A chance, mind you,

of making the deadline.

Damn, man.

Coming up on "fast n' loud"...

It looks like the Caddy
doesn't have a prayer.

Stage fright.

- I can't see.
- And the upholstery job

leaves Richard high and dry.

This sucks.

**

The answer is "b."

Cadillac drivers were protected
from the elements

in the comfort of
a fully enclosed cabin.

**

* peanut butter motor time *

* peanut butter motor time *

Jimmy's back
with the cad 500 motor.

While we were waiting,
we had Kyle come in

and start on the interior
to help save some time.

We do appreciate it, man.

Uh, Richard's Breathin'
down our throat pretty hard.

He tells me when he tore it
completely down,

he found a bunch of stuff
that we couldn't see.

On the top of the "oh, crap"
list? Well, a bent valve.

The second thing,
and probably the wackiest,

one of the head gaskets couldn't
have been more the wrong size.

How that got past the original
engine builder I have no idea.

We may never know.

However, our job at this point
is to get that motor

stabbed back in the Cadillac
with enough time

that we clean up
and finish the details

before Richard's buyer
shows up.

- Just needs a little persuasion.
- Yep.

We're there, almost.
That's it.

Let's hope
we don't have to do that again.

Don't jinx this.

**

Last night I hopped on a plane,

and now I'm drivin' around L.A.
to, uh, try to close a deal

on my 1970 Ferrari 365 gt.

I paid $140,000 for it,

I got my guys to get it running,

got it cleaned up,
and sent it out here

to put it right under the nose
of my buyer.

All said and done, I got about

and I told my buyer
it's worth 250,

and he's no fool.

He's in the business
just like I am,

and he said the name
of his business

was Beverly Hills car club.

I don't think this is
Beverly Hills, 90210,

it's kind of... Adjacent.

I'm Alex manos. I'm the owner
of Beverly Hills car club.

And we buy and sell European,
American classic cars

in any condition.

Alex, what's going on?

- How are you, man?
- Good to see you.

- Likewise.
- Right on.

Man, you got a lot of cars.

Yeah, we got, uh,
roughly 250 cars in stock.

- Really?
- Yep.

I met Richard on the Internet,
actually.

I was looking online
like I do every day,

and I saw his Ferrari
and I gave him a call,

and that's how we met.

Look at that.

- Looks good already.
- It does look at home.

Sittin' in here with all this.

You've had a chance to check
it out. So what do you think?

The car does run and drive,
which you said.

It's a Ferrari. They're gonna
need work regardless.

- Needs everything, yeah.
- But what's the best price

you could sell the car
to me for?

We'll take you to the bank
right now and close the deal.

I'm in the car for...
Let's call it 145.

I got a great deal on it.

I mean, I got a great deal
on this car.

So I want to advance as much
as I can.

And they're moving.
They're going up.

They're definitely going up
in value.

You're here, it's here,

bank of america
is right there,

and, uh,

there's just a small gap
between us and making it happen.

If you do 190 right now,
it's finished, sold, as-is.

Eh, I don't want
to drop that low.

I mean, I'll... I'll...
I'll drop down to 225,

but I mean, think I'm getting to
the realm of giving away money.

I need to...
I need to be under 200.

Oh, come on, man.
- I will do...

If you could do 190,
we'd have a deal.

Ow, man. It's only $1000
to get it back to Dallas.

I hate to cut it that short.

He's like "I gotta be under 200.
I got to be under 200."

Well, what's under 200?

How 'bout 199?

Any time I buy a car,
I want both sides to be happy.

So if I make a deal with them,

I want to make sure they
leave happy and I leave happy,

and that's kind of
the definition of a good deal.

- I'll do it.
- k*ller.

- Thank you.
- Right on.

Boom. We made a deal
at 199 grand.

That makes a really good payday
for gas monkey.

We're happy. He's happy.

And, uh, hopefully
we can do some other business.

Well, I got a pocket full
of cash now, so show me around.

What do you got?
I'd love to.

I think that's a fair deal
for both of us.

Maybe we're both a little bit
uncomfortable,

but we both left happy,

and you know, hopefully we gonna
do more deals in the future.

That's rad.

This car just came out of the
barn in.

With that albatross
of a Cadillac suckin' me dry,

cash deals like this one

are the only things
that keep my head above water.

Yeah, I can see doing more deals
in Beverly Hills.

First thing I'm thinkin'...
Those two jags I got a week ago.

Well I appreciate
you showin' me around.

Well, I appreciate
making a deal with you.

We'll do some more,
for sure.

Beer-thirty.

**

So we're comin' down
to the crunch time

on the '67 Cadillac.

I mean,
everything was going smooth,

the wheels were fittin',
the air ride and everything

was just perfect.

Dropped the motor in,
started it up,

and no dice.

My buyer's showin' up
the day after tomorrow,

but Aaron's swearing to me
he's got the motor problems lit.

Will it run?
Yeah.

Hope so.
Is it gonna haul a*s, or what?

Well it'd be much quicker
than it used to be.

Maybe. Oh, there we go.
Good job.

Maybe.

Stage fright.

Guess not.
Let's take it back out.

Come on, man.

Are y'all jacking with me
or what?

God!

You're gonna give me
a heart attack, man.

We haven't cleaned
the carburetor or anything.

All right, cool.
All right, k*ll it.

So right now, we are fixin'
to put the hood on.

And then we're done.
Air ride works good.

Exhaust is finished.
And then Hicks is on his way.

He's gonna put in the seats
for it.

So getting the hood on,
that's it.

All right, man. Nothing like
cutting it down to the wire.

Don't do that to me again, man.

You have... I was about to have
a heart attack. Dang.

**

Y'all remember
I didn't go out to sue,

but I got Kyle Hicks
to do the upholstery,

and he must have a whole bunch
of high-paid stitchers

over there, because this
interior's costing me 30 grand.

But it's gonna be great

because he's been working
all late at night,

and that stitching
is going to be absolutely Primo.

Like Aaron said it best,

it's gonna be like a marshmallow
riding on a cloud.

**

Well, the car's looking
super cool,

and it's just in time,
because my guy,

he's gonna be here in two days.

And I go to get in it...

...i don't even fit in the car.

Well, everyone says
you're really tall.

I'm not that tall.
I wasn't that tall

when we bought this thing.

Put the top down.
That's a good idea.

That's the way to fix it.
Put the top down.

- Problem gone.
- This is no good, man.

I can't see...
I'm right in the windshield.

I drop the top and sure enough,
I can't even see.

The... the top of the windshield
is right there in my face.

Looks like the back seat's
higher than the front seat.

So he sits in the back seat.

He's looking over the top
of the windshield.

What is this, stadium seating?

President rawlings
rolling around in a parade.

I guarantee you
this is partly our fault,

because we sent it to him
instead of giving him the car.

Nobody really did
anything wrong here,

except for me pushing
time frame, pushing profit.

I guess this was my fault.

Can it be fixed?

Everything can be fixed.

Oh, this sucks.

Coming up on "fast n' loud"...

Richard's ready to unleash
the Caddy for big bucks.

All right,
where we gonna put the dog?

What dog?

But, will he be sent home
with his tail between his legs?

**

It is officially now
Friday.

- Work is done today.
- Shut the front door.

**

Let her rip, tater chip.

You better run!!

Hey!

- Do a donut.
- What is she doing?

- You parked in the donut zone?
- The donut zone?

You didn't tell me
it was a donut zone.

If you park here,
you gotta do a donut.

No, you do... you...

Muffin, you do the donut
in the donut zone.

Muffin?

- Come on, muffin!
- Come on, muffin! Muffin!

or at the country club.

Add custom white interior

for a truly polished look.

Cut that out, dude?

What? This?

Pretty much. Yep, that.

**

So here we go.

from yours truly,

gas monkey garage.

One of the cars that we really
haven't built before

is a big body Cadillac,
big slab side Cadillac.

Well we found one
in export, Pennsylvania.

Once we got this car
back to the shop,

I started thinking, why not
up the game a little bit?

Maybe attract a buyer
with a little more pocketbook.

So I bumped the budget up
to 30 grand

and gave the guys
three weeks.

To get that "floating on
a marshmallow"

Cadillac ride down
to the proper altitude,

we used our favorite
ride tech components.

Even under this big boat,
they absolutely did the trick.

And when it came to wheels,

I didn't really feel
like big billets fit this car.

I wanted something that was
a little bit more subtle.

So Detroit steel wheels,

well, that was exactly
what this car needed,

and little bitty
white wall tires.

The original motor
wasn't all that powerful,

so we went
with a rebuilt cad 500.

And to keep that beast cool,

we used a custom
Ron Davis radiator.

Kyle Hicks ended up doing
a lot of the interior work

back at his shop.

Did a great job,

and the interior
turned out perfect.

Painting a car this big
is a massive undertaking.

When I turned the job over
to keke and Mike coy,

they nailed it.
This car is phenomenal.

- Mike coy, keke...
- Way to go.

I think it turned out great.

It's got the right stance, big
wheels, the interior's right.

Man, what else could you want
from a Cadillac?

It's
a 1967 Cadillac convertible,

and I think it's badass.

Gas monkey and Cadillac...

Get you some of that.

**

The Cadillac shows just
how much we're upping our game

here at gas monkey.
Now I gotta up the price.

Ooh! God, that's fine.

I mean, we went
pretty nuts with this...

Our buyer Todd's here
to see it,

and hopefully we can
close the deal.

Todd graves.

I'm the founder, chairman,
c.E.O., fry cook,

and cashier of raising cane's
chicken fingers,

and I'm here
to see this '67 Caddy

that I talked to Richard about.

Ooh, it's fine,
I love it. Oh.

real deal Caddy motor.

When I talked to Richard,

I really didn't know what
I had in mind.

I just wanted a car
with a lot of presence,

and something I can load
my crew up with me driving it,

and have my dog,
raising cane ii.

Richard said he had
the perfect vehicle for it,

a '67 Caddy,

and so that's why I'm here
to check it out.

How awesome, huh?

Well, I tell you what.

We need to go for a ride,
because that's when...

That's when you're really
gonna love it.

Will do, huh?

Damn! Man, it rides smooth, huh?
Is that that air ride?

Yeah, it's great.

We're just rollin'.

So we went out for a ride.
The car's fast, it's smooth.

Everything works like it should
and it's got a lot of power.

So he dug it right there.
He had a big smile on his face.

I got him hooked.

All I need now is
a smile out of my wallet.

Damn, what a ride, dude.

- That's what I'm talking about.
- You're right.

If you like it,
it can be yours.

Well, I mean, I love it.
Absolutely love it, man.

It's, uh, it kind of embodies
my whole... What I wanted.

Something for cane,
something to take out,

something recognizable.

It really at this point
just comes down to price.

You were trying to
keep a budget around 150 grand

and make it in time
for your event.

I'm really hoping
that I can inch that up

to around 180 grand.

Now here's the sign
of a shrewd negotiator.

I'm asking 180 grand,

and Todd counters with something
totally unexpected.

All right,
where are we gonna put the dog?

- What dog?
- My cane.

My dog, raising cane.
Our mascot.

Well, if she lays down.
You're not gonna see her.

You can build a box or...

You wanna get her in
at some point

- and see what you think?
- Is she here?

Yeah. She's here.

- All right, bring her.
- Yeah, yeah.

And then Todd lowers the boom.
He pulls the puppy card on me.

Who can negotiate against that?

Certified pet therapy dog.

- Come here, girl.
- She listens just like my wife.

She's 16 years old.
Come here, babe.

She needs a ride.

She gets old.

- Come on baby, come here.
- She's got it down pat.

Like she knows it, huh?
Is this your new car, baby?

She's like, "I'll cruise
a Cadillac. I'm down."

Ready to have a little wind
in your hair?

Puppy dog.

I think she likes it.
You like it, girl? Huh?

- You like that?
- You like it?

We can do the box
like we're talking about,

and it'll get her up
a little taller.

And it's...
It's all about price.

I mean, I can... I can do it
however you like, but, uh...

I'm kinda at that, uh,

Uh, I want to do it,

but I need you to do the best
you can with me.

I mean, I'm already at 180.

We're talking about doing
trunk modifications

and adding more money
to it.

- I don't know.
- So I know you gotta make

a, uh... I know you gotta
make a living.

That's a lot of money.

That's a lot... that's a lot
of chicken fingers, man.

How 'bout this?

Can you take 150 and then
do your modifications to it?

Cane, what do you think?

I'm a salesman.
I gotta sell it.

- 150 grand.
- Well, think we got it?

- Yes, sir.
- Love it.

- All right, thank you man.
- Cane, baby,

- this is our car, huh?
- There you go.

Got to do a little bit more
work, but we got 150 grand.

Gas monkey gets paid,
and we upped our game.

We'll go do some paperwork
and get that part done.

All right, buddy.

- '67 red?
- Oh, yeah.

Richard's plan to go
big on a '67 Caddy convertible

started out with a clean car.

Resale red
and the top is down.

Awesome.

But his fortunes faded

when the cost of
a new leather interior...

It's gonna be 30,
I would say.

...busted his entire budget.

Adding in a new engine,

new front and rear suspension,

new wheels,

and a brand-new paint job

continued to eat away
at potential profit.

I'm not doing real well.

A trip to northern California

to purchase a pair
of classic jags...

Very cool.

...pulled even more cash
out of Richard's wallet.

And he found a few Ford bodies

that pushed his payday
even further away.

Hey, keep pushing.

But Richard battled back

when he made a quick flip
on a '61 Volvo.

It says Ferrari on it.

And then scored
even more cold cash

on a 1970 Ferrari 365.

But the real flip
of his fortunes landed

when he cashed in the Caddy

for a price even a dog
could smile about...

...leaving Richard
more than 135,000 reminders

that going big...

...is the only way to go.

So after it's all said
and done, we stepped up.

Sold a 1967 for 150 grand

that we probably had
around $80,000 or $90,000 in.

Now I don't know
how good you are at math,

but I can add pretty fast

and that's around $50,000
or $60,000 profit,

and that works all day long.

If we could do that every time,
we could probably buy

a bigger shop,
or a faster beer assistant.

That's pretty good, though.
