[REVVING]
What's he doing over there?
Are we ready to rock?
[TYRES SCREECHING]
[CHUCKLES]
Shredded. [CHUCKLES]
Hey, good job.
'Right now on Fast N' Loud..
Hot rod hunter Richard Rawlings
and the Gas Monkey crew
tune in to a whole new groove
when they team up with one
of SEMA's top young g*ns...'
Meet Big Mike!
'..to build Gas Monkey's first ever
tuner car.'
Have you guys ever built a Japanese
car before?
Are you sure this is the one
you wanna use?
'And then, Richard falls
head-over-heels
for a pristine Porsche 944.'
'Before gambling...'
Maybe we should make a little bet.
'..on a 1915 Willys Overland.'
If I can get it running,
I'll go 12.5. Game on.
So I drug you out of sunny
California
to bring you to Arizona,
but it's good to see you.
Good to see you, too.
How's it going on your end
of the spectrum?
I'm blessed. Things have been
going really well.
Especially since that SEMA Battle
of the Builders. I know, man.
Here we are out in Arizona
and I've got Big Mike with me.
He came over from California
cos he's big into import tuners.
'Tune-up import cars sprang out
of the California hot rod scene
in the '70s and '80s and guys
started modifying Japanese imports
instead of the American classics
to look hotter at run like hell.
Once the movies tapped
into the trend
the scene blew up
all over the world.
They're a huge part of car culture
now and Gas Monkey wants in.'
I've been watching the trend keep
getting bigger and over the years
we've talked about wanting
to build one.
Aaron and I used to dream about
all these different things
we'd do to a 240 or 280Z, but
I don't know a whole bunch about it.
'The thing is there's so many people
throwing them together now,
they've become a cliche.
All about loud paint,
exhaust, hunky body lines.
If Gas Monkey's gonna take that on,
I wanna kick the doors down
Gas Monkey style
and have them go, "holy sh*t!"
That's where Big Mike comes in.'
The first finalist, Big Mike.
'In 2016, Big Mike was
a top ten finalist
in SEMA's Battle of the Builders.'
The car's a '92 Honda Prelude,
but that's really just the canvas.
'It was like David and Goliath.
During the day, Mike's an x-ray tech
and had to build
his early model Honda in a friend's
garage when he got home from work.
And he still knocked out
big-money hot rods from shops
that do this for a living.'
Running into Mike from time to time,
I said "If you ever find
a super-clean 280Z, give me a call.
If I buy it, maybe you can help us
out and get it built."
Well, he did, so here we are.'
You must be Charlie.
I'm the guy.
Cool. Richard Rawlings.
Good to meet you.
You got a bunch of garages.
You got a bunch of cars? Where?
Right behind door number two.
[WHISTLES] Whoa. Rad!
Look at this, Richard.
'Mike's a man of his word.
Not only did he find me THE 280Z
I've been looking for, but it might
be the best one out there.'
I bought it in '75, and then I took
it off the road.
Feel the fender lips on this thing.
The body's straight.
Should be zero rust on it.
This is the original dash?
Correct. Everything's original.
That's hard to find,
I know that part.
Look at this interior.
[CHUCKLES] Wow.
Rubber's not cracking. This thing's
even better than in the pictures.
Dude, quit. Don't tell him how good
it is. I haven't bought it yet.
I couldn't help myself.
It is beautiful. It's a nice car.
Look at that. Look at how pristine
it is.
The gas tank was drained.
Injector lines were drained out.
I periodically rotated also,
so that's a good engine.
'What I was amazed at was the guy
stored it correctly.
He drained fluids and left it there.
Took the battery out.
He talk about rolling the motor over
by hand.
This is truly a car that's been
sitting since 1982
that you could dump gas and oil in
and it'd probably fire right up.'
Check this out, Mike.
The original tag hanging in here,
"starting instructions."
I put the oil changes that
I did on there. OK.
I have a tech manual
and the owner's manual
along with the original rims
and hubs.
Why are you selling it?
I have other hobbies that I work on
right now,
restoring old mining equipment.
Ah, so you've gotta free up
some room. I know how that is.
'I was impressed, but I still
need to get a good deal.
Sit back and watch, dude.
This is how I work.'
All right, so, what're you
asking for?
Well, it's a real nice vehicle.
What about 10?
[SIGHS] I don't know. 10's good.
That's an all right price.
Mike looked like he was,
"We should go for that."
I was hopin'!
You be quiet.
I mean, it's cool.
It's my favourite colour.
How many miles, 13,000. 13,400,
but who's counting?!
Gotcha. How about...
..seven?
I'll pay you in cash.
Uh, I don't think so.
'They're still pretty far apart.
I'm getting nervous
about the whole thing.'
It's got a door ding,
it's got a scratch.
I was just, like, "OK, Richard,
just buy it."
Tell you what. What?
I like the car a lot,
just sits in my garage.
I'd like to see it go to a good home.
I paid basically $8,000 for this car.
What about eight grand?
You'll take an eight for it now?
Yep. It's a deal.
You got it.
That is super-k*ller, man. I think
that's pretty good, Richard.
I was gonna try to get him for five
until you started telling me
how perfect it was!
I'm sorry, but it's worth it!
'We ended up making a deal
with Charlie for eight grand.
You're gonna come to Dallas and help
us build it. Yes, I am. Cool.'
All right, Charlie. 8,000 bucks
in cash. Thank you.
Thank you, man.
Charlie, beautiful car.
I'll get it picked up in a couple
of days. No problem. All right, sir.
Great to meet you. Well, Big Mike,
I guess you and I need to order
some parts.
'That fact the Richard asked me
to work with the Gas Monkeys
to build the first tuner car ever
is an honour, a dream come true
and I'm gonna knock it out
of the park.'
I can't wait, man. Let's k*ll it.
It's a beautiful thing and I feel
very blessed.
You say this is an honour for you.
Absolutely. I mean -
Cool, I'm not paying you!
OK, we'll talk about that later,
off camera. Still not paying you.
Did you have a good trip in? I did.
Cool. Car should be here any second.
I can't wait for everyone to see it.
They're gonna love it.
They gotta love you first, man.
Look at y'all cleaning up!
Hey, everybody, I want you to meet
Big Mike. What's up, Mike?
They call you "Big Mike"?
Yes, they do.
You're barely over the table!
It's my waistline and a couple
other things.
Anyways, you guys have heard about
Big Mike. He builds import tuners.
SEMA builder? Yep. Wow, OK.
'We Monkeys have been wondering what
Richard has in store for our us,
and then he shows up with none other
than Big Mike himself.
It's no mystery now. Not at all.
A tuner? Yeah, we've been talking
about getting together
and doing a collab build. We bought
the baddest 280Z you've ever seen.
'Wow, a Japanese import car? That's
definitely out of our wheelhouse.
I mean, we build classic
American hot rods here.
I don't know what to think about it.
It's gonna be different.'
[HORN BEEPING] Oh, cats, there's
Mater. Let's go check out the car.
Whoo!
All right. Let's go.
'The Monkeys were less than
ecstatic,
but honestly that didn't
surprise me.
These guys aren't any more immune
to the stereotypes that exist around
tuner cars than the next guy,
but we have something outside
that should help change that.'
And guess what colour it is?
Oh. Whoo!
No surprise there.
I'm so shocked. It's green!
Are you kidding me? Dude.
That is a nice car. I mean, you've
said "nice car" before,
but you've been full of it before.
This is 13,000 original miles.
It looks brand new, pretty much.
The guy were got it from
almost the only owner.
He drained the fluids in 1979
and kept it in his garage like this.
Oh, my God, look how clean
this thing is.
Dude, this is a excellent specimen.
'The car's kinda nice.
It's not American, but it's nice.'
You sure this is the one?
Yeah. We're gonna cut it up.
Oh, my God.
Wow. Have you guys ever built
a Japanese car before?
Hell, no. Yep? Not me. No. I'm kinda
ashamed to say it, but I had a Civic.
Why are you ashamed? This is
the whole Fast N' Furious era.
Did you have the Civic that had the
little window and the back hatch?
No. Oh, OK. That's a CRX.
Oh, is that what it is?
I'm ashamed that I know that too!
I've had a CRX. I've had multiple
Hondas. I come from the same era.
That whole import era ushered
in all these turbo motors
that everybody used on V8s.
That's where it all started.
Trust me, this isn't gonna
be like that.
I wanna keep it very '70s era
specific, use the body lines.
Widen it out just a little bit.
Use a flare.
Bad a*s. Mirrors on the fenders,
just like that. Yes, exactly.
That's k*ller. The powerplant
and the suspension is new school.
So we're talking full suspension.
Full.
You name it, differential,
topknot manifold.
He's says we're gonna be
at about 500 horse.
Dude, for this light car? Yes.
It'll be '70s vintage looking
and it'll just go.
Right on. It's gonna go.
You said flares.
I did. So are we talking bolt-on?
Are we moulding flares? Bolt-on.
Predominantly,
it's gonna go right on.
We might have to tweak a little bit
but it won't be very heavy.
Heavy at points.
Yeah, exactly.
You build a lot of really crazy cars
here. This should be more fluid.
Mike, you might actually get
enough time to paint this one!
'So we've come up with a pretty good
plan on our 280Z
to take it from 1975 to 2017,
Gas Monkey style,
with a little bit of Japanese
influence.
First rule about import building
is it needs to be powerful,
fast, nimble, and we're bringing
in the best parts from Japan
to make that happen.
Under the hood, we want an engine
bay that'll punch you in the face.
We're dropping an SR20 from an S14.
It's only a two-litre four-cylinder,
but this motor's totally redone,
it's got an upgraded five-speed
transmission, a twin-turbo
and a full-race suspension.
It'll make everybody take notice.
As far as the look goes,
we don't wanna mess up
the classic lines of the Z car,
but we gotta add a little bit
of Gas Monkey tuner style.
Exactly. We'll lower the centre
of gravity,
dump the bulky chrome bumpers,
streamline and contour the body,
make room for some Meteor tyres,
utilising the fender flares
that Datsun sold for the car back
in the '70s
and finish it off with bronze forged
vintage wheels from Rays.
The interior's in such great shape
that we're gonna leave most of it,
but the bucket seats need an
upgrade. As for the colour,
we're gonna cover up
the Richard Rawlings green
and go with a metallic bronze.'
It would have been easier to go to
Japan to build this.
Dude, we're gonna have so much fun.
Speaking of fun. Four weeks,
that's all you get.
We've never done one. Come on, you
gotta let us have a little leeway.
Nope, the parts are already coming
in, hardly any fab work.
Four weeks is entirely doable.
How much money do we get?
Let's just get it done.
It's your first Japanese car,
let's go all out.
I'm not giving you
an open chequebook,
but let's just get it done.
Get it off the trailer and let's get
started.
Get that cheque writer ready.
'I want this car to break
down some doors,
so I'm definitely gonna throw
some money at it,
but I still gotta be careful.
With the parts we've ordered,
I'm already 40-grand plus
into this build.
Since this is new territory for us,
I'm not sure how much profit
we're gonna make
and this isn't the kinda car
that my customer usually wants.
What can I do?
Guess I'll just roll the dice.'
It's a cool car, huh?
Sure. I guess.
'I know some of the guys are still
on the fence about what I do.
We are from two different worlds,
but put us together and I think
the sky's the limit.
I cannot wait to see how this thing
turns out.'
'Coming up on Fast N' Loud...'
It is pristine.
'..Richard uncovers a rare Porsche
with a prickly price.'
'While the Monkeys
discover big problems.'
We need metric.
Do you have metric bolts here?
Seriously?
Big Mike, I'm really looking forward
to this project. I'm really excited.
We've never done this and the car's
in sensational shape.
Anything we need to know
before we tear it down?
We have to be careful.
We cannot crack the glass
or bend the mouldings.
It's virtually impossible
to get replacements,
at least in the timeframe.
And since we're colour changing,
all that stuff's gotta come out...
Hey, that's on y'all,
I'm just here to spray it.
Oh, I know. I know, but I'm just
stressed already.
No, no, we'll get it done.
It'll be good. It'll be beautiful.
Like his attitude.
Yeah. Mhm.
I have faith in you guys.
It's gonna be great.
Since you're in Texas, instead of
saying "you guys",
can you say "y'all"?
Y'all. Yes!
The clock's ticking. Let's just start
ripping this thing apart.
Let the fun begin.
Yep.
'Gas Monkey's making a radical
switch with our current project.'
Be very careful,
cos it's straight from Japan.
That's amazing. I like that.
Yeah, I know, right.
'We're building an import tuner,
which is about as far
from our classic American roots as
you can get.'
It's gonna sound like this.
[MAKES ENGINE NOISE]
[LAUGHS] Your face is turning
really red, man!
'Luckily we have a tuner expert here
to partner up with us.'
It's amazing how much
of the suspension
is similar to American-built vehicles
of the same era - harnesses, clips,
hose brackets - everybody's
heads were in the same place.
'I've heard that Gas Monkey moves
at a pretty fast pace
but being a part of it, it's crazy
man, everyone's go, go, go.'
All right, bolts out.
All right, hands clear?
Struts clear?
There it is.
Look how much is hanging off
the back of that!
That is not OK.
Yeah, it is. It's great!
That's how we roll, man.
Don't be scared.
We're this far.
True, but...
OK, OK.
[LAUGHS]
You guys are sketchy, dude.
Wheel it outta there.
Whoa! OH. Watch your fingers.
Sketchy! Would we have it
any other way? Come on.
'We're gonna need that speed. For
me, building a car to this calibre
would usually take realistically
a year
and we're gonna do it in four weeks,
so it's intense.
We're definitely gonna have
to keep up
to finish on Richard's timetable.'
Awesome. Go team.
Go team.
'I'm feeling pretty lucky
these days.
I got the guys working
on a rare Datsun.'
How you going, sir? Hi.
Richard Rawlings.
Hey, Richard. Dan Atchison,
nice to meet you.
'Today I'm in Kentucky chasing down
a one-owner, 1500-original mile
So what's the story?
You got an '87 944?
'87 944. Acquired it from
a gentleman's estate,
he was elderly and passed away.
And it was perfectly time capsuled
and he had it in his garage,
covered up, and didn't drive
it much.
Jeez, that's cool.
'Now, I graduated high school
in 1987,
so this was like one of THE cars
I wanted.'
Well, let's take a look at it.
'But I was driving a Bandit
Trans Am, so I was doing all right.'
It is pristine, to say the least.
The paint's nice.
Belt's still soft on that,
which is absolutely impossible
most of the time.
'We're uncovering the car
and I'm like,
"It doesn't get any cooler
than this."'
Can I open it? You got the keys?
Go ahead. It's unlocked.
'It's red with black interior,
not red with tan interior.
That makes all the difference
in the world.'
Golly, what a time capsule.
This is crazy.
'The car is absolutely flawlessly
perfect.
I mean, these cars, they aged
horribly.
They had a lotta plastic components
to 'em.
They're faded, the interiors stink,
they all came apart,
they're sunbaked,
they barely run and drive,
people are buying 'em for parts.'
Maybe over time...
Oh, that's normal.
'This car is not like any
and I've owned some pretty cool
ones.'
Everything is original on the car,
except for the wiper blades...
And these are the original ones?
Yeah.
[LAUGHS] He saved 'em?
Yeah. Rad!
These are the original gloves
to change the tyre.
They got instructions: "Put gloves
on and change tyre."
Then you laid down on the mat.
'As far as originality and one owner
and 1520-something original miles,
I would say this might be the rarest
one on the planet,
and probably the best one. I want
the car, I want it really bad.
Problem is I'm probably gonna have
to pay world-record pricing for it.'
So I talked to you on the phone.
You were thinking you wanted
Yes. I think that's reasonable.
I think that's, like,
world-record money.
What are you thinking?
I'm holding at 30, you know.
Um...
How's 37?
[LAUGHS] It's a weird number.
Golly, this things cool.
I'm k*lling myself here, because
I'm telling you how awesome it is.
'I'm watching the Porsche market
a lot these days.
Anything Porsche is moving like
crazy.
They went from not being that
desirable or that great a car
to everybody wants one, they wanna
restore 'em and what you have,
so I really don't have to sh**t
too low to score on this one.'
How about 35 grand?
Well, I think, uh...
As much I would like 37,
I think I'll do 35 with you.
Cool. Awesome.
'35 grand, it's way more
than I wanted to pay,
but I don't think there's another
one like it, so we'll see
what happens.'
Thank you. 1500-mile Porsche Turbo.
That is so rad.
[HORN BEEPS] Delivery, boys.
What's up, The Chad?
Got y'all something fancy.
Hey, hey, hey, be careful, Chad.
Oh, you know what this is.
OK... Looks pretty small.
You got an intake. Where's the rest
of the motor? Hey, look.
'Some of the parts I ordered
for this import build are here
and it's clear the guys are stepping
into unfamiliar waters.
When we first got the motor,
they looked at it like,
"Where's the rest of it?"
Because it's really half
of what they're used to.
It's two litres, four cylinders.'
I know that you're used to doing
big old V8s and this is half that.
Yikes.
Honeywell Garrett Turbo.
Thank you, that's what I needed.
Once we put on the turbo,
it'll be golden. Give me the chance
to assemble everything.
It's not really looking like much
right now.
'They were like,
"Is this really gonna make power?"
And it just made me chuckle
to myself,
because the Japanese knew
what they were doing.
This motor, fully built, you're
talking about producing 300hp more
than what it came with and still
getting fantastic gas mileage.'
Trust me, guys, you don't need
all that power. Nice change.
Believe, just believe.
Hey, Mike. Yes?
I have faith in you, Mike.
I appreciate you guys.
And I'm also standing on a pallet,
so I look like a giant next to you.
All right, let's switch.
There it is.
God! Yes!
How do you feel right now?
[LAUGHTER]
Now it's "Regular Mike".
We'll just get it on a stand,
I'll put it together and we'll
get moving. Right on.
With only four weeks to
do this build,
we've gotta hit the ground running.
Why does still have a diaper on it?
Stop.
'Once we get our engine
on the stand here,
our goal is to get it dressed up
by the end of the day,
so we can put it in the bay tomorrow
and get everything mocked up.'
Oh, man, this thing is not going in.
Dude, that bolt is not gonna work.
We need metric.
You guys have metric bolts here.
Hm.
Do you have metric bolts here?
[SUCKS AIR]
[LAUGHS]
Probably not.
Seriously? We'll definitely check.
I mean, we can definitely get them.
Getting them is one thing. I'd like
to have them right now. OK.
'One of the differences between
a hot rod and an import shop
is the way we measure our bolts.
There's metric and there's inches.
The import guys, well, they use
metric, and us hot rod builders,
we use inches. And, news flash,
they don't play well together.
Nothing? No stashes anywhere?
Man, all our stashes are small stuff.
That's not gonna do it. Standard,
standard, standard, standard,
standard, more standard,
a lot more standard.
Oh! I didn't think that I would need
engines and bolts.
[SIGHS] Let's see if I can make
do with anything.
Is there anything off the car?
Is that what you're thinking?
Yeah. We do not have that.
All of those boxes of parts
and you didn't get single bolt
for this thing?
OK. f*ck.
All right, I'm calling Chad.
'I'm sure Chad can track down what
we need somewhere here in Dallas...'
He needed an 80 ml,
'..but until he does,
we're dead in the water.'
Like, how long will it take
to get these bolts? A month.
[LAUGHS] 'It just reminds you,
we're coming at this build from
two totally different planets.'
What you doing?
I just wanna put this on the stand.
'That four weeks is starting
to look shorter and shorter.'
So, stopped down over some bolts.
Can't imagine how the rest of this
is gonna go.
It's gonna go well.
'Coming up on Fast N' Loud,
Richard gambles on a 1915 Overland.'
See you in a little while,
we'll give you a ride. Game on.
'While the tuner build...'
That coilover will sit in this body.
It sits in that body?
'...continues to throw the Monkeys
off kilter.'
Yeah, man. Isn't that weird?!
So there's the cross member and we
know where the motor basically sits.
There's supposed to be a part
that goes in between this
and our motor mounts.
You guys look concerned. What's
going on? I can't put the motor in.
There's a part missing.
I got it overnighted.
Is there a spacer or something?
Yeah, basically.
So, just what do you think?
Re-rack the chassis get it in
the air and work on suspension
OK, that's where we'll start.
All right.
'We were able to get our metric
bolts in for the engine stand
and Mike got his little motor dressed
up and ready to go.
But now we're missing another part.
We were hoping to have
everything ready
if we've any hope of getting done
on time.
Meanwhile, Big Mike's gonna jump
on the work underneath the car.'
I'm gonna try to mock up some
of the suspension.
Got any cool parts down there?
Yes, I do.
Ah, dude, billet arms.
Yeah.
Wow, that's freakin' nice. Yeah,
real beefy. That's some legit stuff.
You gonna anodize these
or leave 'em shiny?
To me, the machine work is art.
It won't rust, obviously.
So I wanna leave it.
It'll be all like...and you hit
bumps... That's good stuff.
'Those shiny parts Mike just
unwrapped for our fully-adjustable,
independent rear suspension
we're putting in.'
It's a cool design, but it's far from
anything that we usually do.
Put that bolt in through the hinge.
Yeah. And then hinge it up in.
'With the power modifications
we're making,
we're gonna have over 300 more hp
to the rear wheels than it
was even designed to handle.'
You're good to go, brother. And I'll
snug 'em up whenever we're ready. OK.
'So everything in the rear is gonna
be upgraded to race car components,
but in the front, Big Mike wants
to go a different direction.'
Hey, buddy.
What's up, brother?
You said you wanted the steering rack
and the struts to put the coils on?
Yeah. 'The original spindles in
the front are forged from steel,
so they're incredibly strong,
virtually unbreakable.
It doesn't make sense to me
to lose them,
so I'm gonna do a little mix and
match with the upgrades instead.'
Mike.
We got spindles.
Spindles and then the coil springs,
which I don't know what our plan is,
how much you wanna take.
Yeah, so what we're gonna do is,
we'll chop it, because the way
the new coil over sits,
it'll sit about an inch and
a quarter into this housing.
'Even though we've worked with
this stuff before,
this tuner world is just
different enough
that it throws us out of our comfort
zone.' What are you cutting?
No, what we're gonna do is use the
original forgings for the spindles.
And the coilover will sit
in this body.
It sits in that body?
You drop it into the sleeve.
Wow. It's different.
Yes.
It's not like we haven't done
any crazy things around here.
Import stuff, totally different.
Oh, stop it, you guys.
No, I'm just saying it's a totally
different thing than what we do, so.
Oh, I've done some weird stuff.
I know, I've watched you do it!
Thanks, man. All right,
I'll get 'em chopped.
Yes, sir. Yeah,
I'll have it dug out.
Couple of hours? Not a problem.
See you then.
Tony! Come here, man!
'So, a few years back, I was buying
a car from a gentleman and he goes,
"Oh, I got this other one around
the corner in another garage."
Turned out it was a 1915 Willys
Overland.
If you were lucky enough to have
a car in the early 1900s
and it wasn't a Ford, chances are it
was from the second-largest
auto manufacturer of the times,
Willys Overland.
So I bought the car for ten grand,
stuck it in the warehouse and forgot
about it.
Fast forward two years later,
a guy finds out I've got the car
and he gives me a holler. He's like,
"Well, would you sell it?"
And I'm like, "I'll sell anything,
even my first born."'
So, here it is Mr Todd. That's the
one you told me about on the phone?
There we go. So, who are the boys?
This is my son, Sam.
Sam. And Matthew. Matthew.
How you doing, man?
They grew up around old cars.
They've spent their youth
scraping grease and stripping paint
and they're my crew.
No kidding! Well, this is older
than an old car.
I compare these to more
like tractors.
Do you mind if I spin the crank,
see if the motor's free?
Yeah, it still has comprehension,
that's good.
Man, in my opinion, on these door
jambs and everything,
this might be the original paint.
What do you think?
I'm thinking it might be.
This is the original upholstery,
at least it appears original.
No kidding? 'I have a 1917 Overland
and I've always wanted a pre-16
Overland,
because it's considered a horseless
carriage.'
OK, this may not be a good sign.
Why?
Whenever they have spare parts in
the car, magnetos.
I'm hoping it doesn't have
a magneto issue.
'As far as this '15 Overland goes,
it's been sitting for 40 years,
which could be good
or could be bad.
We'll see if there is some unknowns.
There's a little bit of work to be
done
to see if we're actually gonna pull
the trigger on it.'
Well, Richard, I love the car.
I love the car.
I've been trying not to show
my poker face.
Well, like I told you on the phone,
I think it's worth 15 grand
all day long.
That's like beat-up Model A money.
I feel like I'd be rolling the dice
at 15 without hearing it run.
You just told me how you were such
a good mechanic, teaching your kids.
Take it home, get it running,
you'll be in good shape.
I don't think I'd have to take
it home to get it running.
Oh, come on now,
you sound pretty confident.
Maybe we should make a little bet.
Oh, OK. I'll tell you what,
if I can get it running,
I'd go 12 and a half.
Wait. So I'll take that,
but if you can't get it running
you gotta give me 15.
Oh.
See how good your team is.
[LAUGHS] Sure, I'll do that.
Kick a*s. Done deal.
You even get an air-conditioned shop
to work in.
'So, there you go, we got a friendly
little wager going on.
If Todd and his sons can
get this car running,
they're gonna get it for 12,5.
But if they can't, I get 15.
It's rock and roll.'
Let's make the rear face out in case
they get it running.
Don't want all the fumes
and rats inside.
No, WHEN we get it running.
"When"? That's right.
'For once, kinda hoping a car
doesn't start.
I told the guy,
"My shop is your shop,
so I'm sure you need
a corkscrew,
an old paper clip, some duct tape
and some ether."'
All right, guys, you got yourselves
a deal. Get after it.
We'll see you in a little while.
We'll give you a ride.
We'll see. Game on.
Oh, look at this.
What you find?
Columbia flag set for your hood.
I'd love to know what year these
are from, but it looks old.
OK, now everybody check every door,
see what other hidden treasures
we have.
We got something in here too. Uh-oh.
Couple of things.
Don't show Richard, he's gonna want
more for the car.
Some soap?
I think so.
Yeah, hotel soap. Huh.
It's a letter from January 27th,
Sending it to...
Department of Public Safety.
Yeah. "To Whom It May Concern:
The above captioned vehicle has
qualified as an ancient vehicle."
Ancient vehicle. Don't tell Richard,
he's gonna want more money. Yeah.
Oh, what you got, Matt?
Some old mail stamps. Mail stamps?
Like those S&H Green Stamps?
Yeah. January 27th, '78.
'78? Yeah, 1978.
Oh, yeah. Man, these are probably
worth a fortune in themselves.
I bet these are worth some money.
Oh, this is when they would take it
to a show,
they would just put this on the cars
to make sure that nobody messed
with them.
Which is not what we do,
we just let people crawl all in 'em.
Antique Auto Show pamphlet.
Oh, yeah. 1962. Wow.
Oh, what have we got here?
Oh, this is like a little...
It's from 1920.
It's like a little road map of
a subdivision.
I bet these guys were looking to buy
a house back in 1920
and they gave 'em this little flyer.
Oh, wow. Yeah, in Tahlequah.
Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Yeah.
That's really neat.
Boy, I tell you what,
this fuel line is stubborn.
Oh, I got it.
Mike, I got this cross member
all cleaned up for you.
What do you think? Mm? No more motor
mounts where they don't need to be.
Thank you.
Yeah. We're ready to go in, right?
Yes. I'd also really like
to get off the ground.
All right. OK.
Watch your head.
Oh, and my phone cracked. Gas Monkey
casualties, my phone is destroyed.
'We're finally ready to test fit
this tiny motor
that Big Mike brought over from Japan
for the 280Z.'
We need more altitude. More higher.
'Even with this transmission
attached,
there's no way it's gonna take
as much muscle as we're used to.
If you're gonna go through the
trouble of swapping out an engine,
you'd think you'd at least put one
in there of some kind of size.'
How do you feel about us coming back
to you a little bit?
OK, we gotta bring the whole thing
over towards me. OK.
OK, that got the trans
almost parallel.
That makes it look a lot better up
here too.
'We got it stabbed and, from the top,
it looked great.' So we're good?
Yeah. Right now, you're oil pan
is clocked to the passenger side
very slightly.
OK. The pan's supposed to be
parallel.
'But underneath, the oil pan
wasn't as level as it should be.
No biggie, a few little adjustments
should take care of that.'
What have you got, two degrees,
three degrees? Three and a half.
'We got the oil pan level.
But then the engine, well...'
Leaning. Yeah, leans.
Falling over the driver's side.
That's OK. It's designed that way,
guys. Let me come and check it out.
Yeah. Yeah, come on. Is it really
supposed to look that way?
Pretty much. It's really,
really close. OK.
'I've installed a lotta motors
and if Big Mike hadn't been there,
I'd have spent hours trying to get
the pan level and the motor straight.
I can't even trust my own eyes
anymore.'
There you go. I like it. 'The tuner
world gets stranger and stranger.
But look at this from this angle.
Oh, wow, yeah. Isn't that weird?
But it's right.
Really? Yeah, man.
I've never seen one like that.
The oil pan's level. You see it?
Yeah, underneath it looks flat.
Yeah, because it is flat.
'OK, it's official,
we're in Bizarro World now.'
That's weird, man.
'Coming up on Fast N' Loud:' They got
it running? We're fixing to see.
'Richard finds out if his $2500
gamble pays off.
And Big Mike...'
The time crunch is brutal here.
'...gets a serious dose
of Gas Monkey reality.'
We're already supposed
to be in paint.
I'm with it, Jason. I get it.
OK, Matthew, come over here
and put the sparks plugs
and the caps back on. Get the gas
can outside. They got it running?
I don't know. We're fixing to see.
Y'all getting close?
Getting close. Just bolt the
carburettor on and crank it.
What goes right here and right here
and right here and right here?
What are those? When it's really
cold you open that,
put fuel in there and it primes
the cylinder. Right on.
Look at that. I'm learning. That's
why we don't mess with these things.
'So Todd and his kids are here and
they have made me a quasi-bet,
if you will.
I had this 1915 Overland
just laying around the shop
and if he can't get it running
he's agreed to pay 15 grand.
And if he can, I agreed to knock
So, what did we find wrong so far?
Nothing?
[LAUGHS] Not so lucky.
We found a stuck valve
on the number-two cylinder.
We're having to squirt
some Marvel Mystery Oil in there
and that freed that up.
Magneto will be the issue.
Right now it's all about spark.
If we can get spark, it should run.
'One of the coolest things that
I have seen in a long time
are two young kids under the driving
age that are working on a car
that is, well, it's 100 years older
than they are, put it that way.
And then, on top of that,
they're working with their dad.
That's pretty rad.'
Well, let's see. Make sure it's in
neutral. Go ahead and crank it, Sam.
I don't see any gauges moving.
No, me either.
And they don't have an ignition,
all they have is magneto.
Its on one's pushed in?
Yes.
All right, so we're hooked up right.
Yeah.
No, nothing on that one.
'Well, you need spark,
you need fuel and you need air.
We got fuel and air,
we ain't getting no spark.
[SIGHS]
OK, try it again.
Nothing.
Ah!
'A magneto is a small electrical
generator
that makes a spark instead of
a battery. This one ain't working
and there's a couple of old magnetos
laying in the car,
so obviously this was the problem
when they parked it.
But once they order
a new magneto and install it,
it should be all set.'
Well, at the end of the day,
I feel like you
and your guys got further than
we would in about three days.
Well, if I had a new magneto
I bet it would start.
The good part is you got a good
story to tell.
There'll be some old man,
"God dang it,
you didn't check out this thing
over here."
You know it. "You gotta press
the hoo-summit valve".
You and your boys worked hard. I'll
give it to you for 12,5 anyways.
'To see him and his kids working
on the car was worth it to me.
Went ahead and sold him the car
for 12,5.'
You guys, that was pretty cool.
I like to see the young kids
working on cars, for sure.
That's awesome. I wish you would
have got it running.
I'll send you a video of it running.
Heck, yeah.
I may even drive it back over here
to take you for a ride. I dare you.
'I made 2500 on a $10,000
investment.
That's 25% of my money.
That's not too bad.'
You do take $100 bills, don't you?
Yes, sir. That's awesome.
'All in all, it was a great
experience.
I got a great price for the car,
got to spend some quality time
with my boys here,
made some good memories and, yeah,
we hope to do it again.'
We'll help you get it loaded in
a sec. Thank you. Thanks again.
Thanks for making your kids work on
cars. They won't do it these days.
Daphne, count this money!
So, if you help me right here.
Gonna mock this guy up.
I'm not really liking the fitment.
You see what I'm talking about?
There's a lotta not lining up
going on there.
Yeah, this one is not centred
at all.
Looks like it's way too narrow
for the car.
I might have to have Jeremy come
over something better.
Cool. Just what I needed,
more fab work [!]
Yeah, more fab work for you.
Thanks.
'Every time we work on a new builder,
it takes us a little while
to figure out how they operate.
Big Mike's got great visual ideas,
but when it comes to physical
building,
it's obvious he's used to taking
as much time as he needs
to make his vision come true.'
Hey, Jeremy, we got a couple
of little clearance issues.
We don't need anymore problems.
For the oil drain,
the fitting is touching the flange.
So instead of using the coupler,
you're gonna have to weld directly
to the compressor housing.
Just gonna keep adding to the fab
list, huh?
Man, we're all learning something.
Right now, nothing's fitting
very good.
It's just a lotta little things
and we're trying to get around 'em
and it's just not helping us out any
with the time frame.
'We're still having issues getting
the fender flares to lay flat,
so I pulled Mike and Tony over here
to keep this thing moving along.'
I sound like a broken record
right now,
but I was supposed to have the car
Monday.
Today is Wednesday.
'Richard gave us four weeks to do
this.
That includes a complete
colour change to copper -
door jambs, firewall, everything.
I'm trying to get it in the paint
booth by tomorrow.'
All right, let's throw some bolts
in there.
We gotta make sure that these apexes
meet each other.
I feel like we're slightly this way.
The idea is for it to sit not
necessarily up against the body,
but a way more flush than this.
When we get this so that these
match.
'That means when I see Mike
getting hung up on a new problem,
I have to step in and keep
this thing moving.'
What's up, Jason? Hey, so Mike,
I really like how you mounted
this on here,
but the edges where it meets
the body,
it just needs to be spaced a little
bit tighter to the body.
This gap? Yeah. He'll have to modify
it so that it's gapped evenly.
OK. You do realise, my only concern -
just to be the devil's advocate -
is this type of stuff here
is destroying us
getting anything else done.
We're supposed to be in paint. Sure.
We're still a long way off.
I'm with, Jason, I get it.
But when it comes to panel gap,
having everything even,
that's what makes the car either
look great or look bad.
I believe Mike has enough time where
he can put some time into this.
We still have other stuff before
he gets the car.
'[SIGHS] I keep hearing Big Mike
say he gets it,
but then he digs in like a dog
with a bone.'
It's just that back end right here,
that's a pivotal thing.
It's gotta fit better.
The problem with that is I've still
need time to assemble the car
once we get it back, and we still
haven't gotten it into paint.
'He's a perfectionist. I see the
detail that went into the car
he built last year for SEMA.
And I get it, attention to detail
is what makes something great.'
I know this is important.
I'm gonna let you make that call.
I'm all about the fitment and
detail. All right, we got a plan.
We'll get this to Mike,
even if it costs us an extra day.
We can make it where we know we're
happy with it. That's most important.
OK. All right, thank you. Thank you,
thank you. Yeah. Hey, and again,
we wanna give you what you want.
I know. I'm going to work.
'I don't know if I accomplished
anything there,
but if we keep pushing back paint
we are gonna run outta time.'
No way.
The time crunch is brutal here.
Oh, dude. I'm feeling it,
so I'm with you, man. I'm with you.
'At some point,
something's gotta give.'
All good?
I wanna make sure now it's all
welded up and everything.
All right, ready?
Yep. He's going down, for real.
I don't know, dude. All I'm looking
forward to is Friday.
I'm thinking about having
a big Friday party.
Hey, Daphne and Christie
just walked in.
Is that a good sign or a bad sign?
It's a bad sign.
Have a seat. It's bad for you.
I'm talking to Denis. Why y'all...
I know, it's bad for you.
We're trying to make plans on
Friday. Bye, Denis. I gotta go.
Do you have any idea how far over
budget you are on the Datsun?
I didn't really know that I ever
had a real budget on this.
We've never done one.
Even if we didn't have a budget,
it's way over budget.
Come here, Bibi. Do you have
a sales plan for this car?
[SIGHS] Here we go again.
What are you doing?
They have spent way too
much money, Richard.
Bite 'em.
Way too much money.
Like what?
You're like over 80k on this.
Ugh! It would have been cheaper
to go to Japan to build it.
You can't get on the desk, you don't
work here. You're just a doggy.
Hello! What?
Squirrel!
I was playing Bibi, seriously.
So, all the imported parts for
that are super-expensive, Richard.
We can't afford to put anything
else into it.
You're never gonna get our money back
out of it.
Yes, I will.
It's gonna be a cool car.
Am I too far over? Yes, maybe.
But what am I to do?
I can't stop now, we're in it.
You're gonna have to put the brakes
on it. You can't spend anymore money.
So can you go talk to 'em?
Like, now.
[SIGHS] Why don't y'all go talk
to 'em for once?
You always make me do the dirty
work. I always talk to them.
No, I always gotta do
the dirty work.
Send me out there to the muscled up
dudes.
Tough guys with tattoos and beards.
All right, guys,
I just got a a*s-whipping
so y'all are getting one.
'I knew this build was gonna be
expensive. A lot of pieces
we put on it, especially the
suspension and braking components,
are from small manufacturers over
in Japan for a very niche market.
It wasn't like I could get a good
deal, I had to pay
and I had to ship 'em over.
But listening to Big Mike,
I was hoping that we could recoup
some money on time and labour.
I haven't seen the Datsun in a few
days, I haven't gone back there,
and I'm not excited with
what I'm seeing.'
All right, so I was coming back here
to see how we're doing,
but the fact that Mike Coy
is doing bodywork
means that we're really behind,
I guess, huh?
Yeah. Why? This was planned out
way in advance.
I gotta take the blame.
There's a lot of little fab things
that only Tony and Jeremy can do
and I'm having them do 'em.
It was supposed to be a lot easier
than this. Putt N Play.
I don't think I said that.
Close. Close.
Here's the deal. We know our
timeline, we're behind,
so we're doing the best
with the situation.
On the bright side,
the bodywork is almost done.
That's not enough. You should have
been in the booth days ago.
'I'm always screaming about time
and money.
In order to make money
in this business,
we've got to not only build
a k*ller car,
but we've gotta do it in
an established amount of time.
If we go over on either of those,
we're losing money.
And on this one,
we're over on both.'
We're losing our a*s now on the car.
Between time and money,
we've overspent too. What are our
options? We need to speed this up.
How long is it gonna take you
to paint this car copper?
It's gonna take a while.
Well, what if we leave it green?
That would save us a bunch of time.
We spent a lotta time fabbing
to put all the items we want
on the car.
I would much rather give up a colour
change than give up those items.
At the end of the day,
if time is our problem,
then that's gonna be the timesaver.
'I'm worried about where we're
at the Z, but we're committed
and we've already spent the money.
We just got dig out of this hole.
A colour change wouldn't hurt
the value of the car. As long as Big
Mike doesn't think we're settling,
I think it's the best way forward.
At least it's green, though.'
I won't think it's settling.
I like this colour green.
The bronze wheels we got,
they look great on this colour.
And you like green.
So not that bad.
So we'll just have to jam it.
Staying green. You like green.
All right.
When it's done he'll be happy.
Hey, all we gotta do is deal
with what we got, just keep moving.
'What's the old joke where the mice
falls into the bucket of milk
and one of 'em gives up and dies
and the other one just kept
churning away
until he turned it into butter
and crawled out.
Yeah, we're in a f*cking
big a*s pool of milk.
'Next week on Fast N' Loud...'
Why isn't the motor and trans in?
'..Richard ups the stakes.'
I've got an offer to put it in SEMA.
That is not that far off.
'And then, Richard discovers
a rare Shelby
and goes all in for
a well-done deal...'
How about 90 grand?
Typical car dealer.
You gotta barter a little bit.
Y'all ready for a race today?
'..before setting the pace for
a lineup of NASCAR legends.'
I got this.
'But with the Datsun deadline
looming...' Please run.
'..one little detail leads to
a last-minute catastrophe...'
Holy sh*t, it's not gonna run today.
'..that could k*ll their moment
in the SEMA spotlight.'
This is ridiculous. f*ck!
