During the '60s and '70s
In films such as "the getaway,"
"the great escape,"
And my all-time favorite
car chase film, "bullitt."
You know, this is the 50th
anniversary of my dad's picture,
"Bullitt."
Like his dad, chad's been in
dozens of movies and tv shows.
He was one of the cobra kai
in the original "karate kid."
He got bit by the racing bug.
Chad started racing dirt bikes
when he was only nine
And quickly
moved on to racing cars,
But he was forced
to retire in 2006
After crashing his car
into a wall at daytona.
But that doesn't mean
chad's given up on cool cars.
No, sir.
They've got the new
steve mcqueen edition
Made by steeda and ford.
It has more horsepower,
upgraded suspension and tires,

premiered in 1968,
And when it came to hollywood
car chases,
It was a game changer.
"Bullitt"'s fastback mustang
versus the bad guys'
Black charger, racing each other
at breakneck speeds
On the hilly streets
of san francisco.
No special effects, all real,
all awesome stunt driving.
That ten minutes of action,
squealing tires,
And heart-stopping jumps was,
to this day,
The greatest car chase
of all time.

Chad: we need something that's
going to hold together
Because it's going to
get beat to hell.

I'm sure we can do it today.

to build an exact replica
Of the '68 mustang his dad drove

It's an homage to my dad,

This was the only one
I could find on short notice
Because we've got 30 days
to do this.

He ended up putting those
inside.

We have to build a real car,
not a prop car,
And it's got to be able

It was 1968 technology
when they filmed it.
They had a little bit
of the extra springs
On it from the shelbys.
They had front-disc brakes.
Reinforcements for the frames.yep.
Little reinforcement
here and there.
We're gonna follow the plan
to the "t," exactly like it was.

in order for the '68 mustang
To perform as it did
in the movie "bullitt,"
The entire suspension's
control arms
And shock towers
are reinforced
And even magnafluxed
to make sure
That the metal
was perfectly solid.
Plus heavy-duty front coils
were installed
Along with koni shocks,
and the 390-cubic-inch motor
Was modified to bump it up
to 325 horsepower.
Is there upgraded suspension
Or just put stock stuff on it?
Richard:
it's upgraded from stock,
but it's just the shelby stuff.
-Oh, okay.
-It's -- it's '68 technology.
It's gonna be tough --
it's gonna take somebody
That can really drive a car
to keep it on the road.
Well, chad's handling that.
You're gonna have to put
the heavy-duty springs,
Coil springs in it
and reinforce the frame rails.
Fine.just like they did back in '68
Or '9, I guess, yeah.

Richard: here's the plan for
turning the stucco bathtub
Into a reincarnation
of the "bullitt" stunt car.
Thankfully, this one is really
rust free
So the paint and body guys
can clean it up
And get it painted in
the authentic highland green.
We'll return the interior
to its black vinyl glory
With bucket seats
and the shelby appointments.
And we'll fill the hole
under the hood
With a 390 cubic-inch v8
Which we'll modify
to bring up the horsepower.
To handle the hard turning
and the k*ller jumps
On the streets of san fran,
We'll beef up the suspension
and the brakes.
Chad wants this car stocked
except for two improvements --
Posi-track
and disc brakes for safety.
The monkeys have a hard
four-week deadline.
As for budget, we're not
monkeying up this one.
We have to do it exactly the way
chad wants it,
So I'm giving them
Which means I'll be all in
for around 65 grand.
There is going to be
a ton of eyes on this.
This one of the most iconic
cars in the world.
So our rep is definitely
on the line.

and then we'll put it on a lift
And take the suspension down.
Get it on the rotisserie
and get it on a sand blaster.

As a rusty ol' '76
c-10 short-bed.
I bought it a few years ago,
Right down the street
from the shop.
Of money later,
The guys have built it into one
of our coolest show trucks ever.
I took it to a big
charity auction,
And my buddy dennis stole it
for just 85 grand.
-Well bought, dennis.
-Teach you some of that!
Richard:
then he took a loss selling it
at barrett-jackson.
Sold for $41,000, way up front.
Whoo!
It's like bad luck is
following this truck around.
Eventually, my guy
freddy landed it.
He had it towed down here
on a tow truck
Because he was gonna
bring it himself.

Because it was making a little
whine in the transmission.

So he was loading it
on his trailer...

and driver sides.

the '68 "bullitt" mustang,

Luckily, the car just needs
a moderate amount of body work
To get it ready
for fresh paint.

in front of the cameras,

finding any flaws
When it's time for its moment
in the spotlight.
I did have to skim, as you can
see, almost the whole quarter,
But the rest of the car
is actually pretty good.
I think the guy's side over
there is pretty high and tight.
You know, they just got a couple
dents here and there.
It's a good thing we got
keenan back because we needed
An extra set of hands
to get this done pronto.
But some things can't be rushed.
It needs a coat of sealer
and some dry time before we can
Yank it out of the paint booth
and block sand it smooth.

And my favorite part,
what I love about the movie
Is the highland green mustang.
It is a clean, unique color
That you just
don't see every day.

their metalwork,

Now we just got to make sure
we have a nice,
Even surface for paint.

the body is perfectly straight,
We're gonna spray on
a guide coat.
As we sand it off,
the block's gonna skip over
All the valleys and scratches
so that the guide coat
Will allow us to see
any kind of imperfections in it.
We'll fix those and then do
a final prime on it,
Then a sealer,
and we're ready for paint.

It took a little work
finding the exact color,
But this is the exact color
it's supposed to be.
I think it's gonna look great,
but I don't know until
I get in there and painting,
and, honestly,
I'll have wasted my time.
The highland green color
of the "bullitt" mustang
Is as iconic as the car itself.
It'll be the first thing
chad mcqueen notices
When he sees the car.
And millions of people
will be seeing it
At the end of our show when
chad unleashes it to the world,
So it's got to be right.
But a painter's work
is never done.
Now the c-10 needs some
attention to fix that noise
That's supposedly coming
from the transmission.
I don't even hear
anything wrong.
He says it's when it drives,
and then jason was saying
He could hear it in
the tr*nny tunnel,
But it could just be low on
transmission fluid
For all we know.
Put it on the lift and see.
We got the paint and bodywork
done on the c-10.
Now it's time to take it
outside, put it on a lift,
And see what kind of noise
it's making.

That sounds like
a rear end.
That's definitely
not up front.
Right away, we could tell
the problem's coming from
The rear end,
not the transmission,
So we're gonna start
by checking the fluid
And kind of see what
that tells us.

It shouldn't be so
metallic-y on my fingers.
Mike: the good news is,
there's lubricant in there.
The bad news?
Well, it's kind of glistening.
That means there's tiny,
little shavings in there.
Let's drain it
and see what it does.

And it shouldn't

We drain the fluid through
a filter to see if maybe
A gear broke and dropped
a big piece of metal.
I don't see any big chunks.no.

There's no broke gears.
The next step is
to pull the housing
And take a look at the gears.
Ohh, that stinks.
Oh, yeah, they're shiny.
But not only that --
it's half gone.
Oh, yeah, feel that.look at the thickness.
Mike: the teeth on the gears
were all worn down,
So either it was the fluid
ran low or the amount of play
Or what they like to call
"lashing" was wrong.
Either way, we're gonna
have to send it out
And get a new set
of gears put in it.
This is definitely

the stunt crew had to inspect

up the suspension,
Beat this thing a little bit,
disc brakes in the front,
Which it had drums initially.
Disc brakes will help

they don't pull as well,
And when they do, they can fail,
and we definitely don't want
That on the steep hills
of san fran.

we're doing any kind of burnouts

or donuts or anything,
Both wheels are spinning, it
makes it a lot easier to drive.

right on to this motor

The heads that we upgraded

extra horsepower.
This change of motor idea
of mine -- terrible idea.

was to get the most horsepower
Out of this car,

The headers are a pain --
major pain.

So if we just stuck with
the regular 330-horse motor,
We'd already be done.

on a transmission
That the car doesn't have,
so even if we have
A motor in here,
we have no transmission.

manual 4-speed that can handle
All of the horsepower
from this 390 v-8.

We really caught a break today,
with this part of the build
Going off without a hitch.
Now that the drivetrain's in,
I can fab the skid plate
that chad mcqueen asked for.
Get this thing wrapped up,
finally.

Jeremy: chad showed up, and he
added a few things that were
Very important,
like the skid plate
So we don't cave
this oil pan in.
Otherwise, the first time they
jump the car, might break it.
Chad got us thinking
about jumping this thing,
And we realized that besides
the oil pan,
We also have headers
hanging low.
So we're adding more
than just a skid plate.
One of the things we're
gonna add is these
Subframe connectors,
and what that'll do is
Tie the front subframe
to the rear subframe.
You give it
a little extra strength.
They'll also act as
big slide rails, basically,
So when the car bottoms out
and slides,
It'll hit this and not the
actual underneath of the car.
And hopefully, when they're
done jumping the streets,
The doors will still open
and close without the car
Being a little buckled.
Josh: while jeremy welds
in the subframe connectors,
I'll add some pieces
to protect the oil pan.

It's not your
average skid plate.
It's kind of weird. There's just
gonna be two bars --
Essentially bash bars --
that, if this thing kind of
Comes into contact with
the ground, it's just gonna
Skid out instead of
catching the oil pan.

A year earlier on the streets of
london for the film "robbery."
Now, traditionally,
car chase scenes are filmed
By the second units,
but yates insisted on doing
This one himself, since he knew
steve mcqueen would be
Performing a lot of
his own stunts.
In our case, chad hired
a driver, and this guy's stud.

I'm a formula drift champion.

started in grassroots drifting
Before becoming
the second-winningest driver
In formula drifting history.
But in 2009, he earned the title

So yeah, you could say
he's more than qualified.

reinforcements on it, too?

I mean, we're taking it

Counteractive for what we want,
which is they got a lot of
Forward grip
and no side grip.
