And maybe a pretty good-size
whiskey dent in the back.

and it's got ac,

And it's got a v8 motor
and four-wheel drive and --

We absolutely don't need
any of that [bleep]

'Cause if we buy this car, it's
not gonna have any of that.

Because, well,
he found this guy, mike.

Brian figured I may have wanted
to get in on a hot trend

Before it overheats.

That's why I'm driving
a 1979 scout ii.

Gas monkey is not in
the business of chasing trends.

Well, this is a one-owner scout,
came from farmersville, texas,

About two hours away.

like I was model as

In the early days of gas monkey.

He's figured out there's
a really rich market for these,

And it's just waiting
to be mined.

I sold three of these to a guy
last year that ls swapped them.

They're sold already,






I think I saw, like,
four or five of these at sema.

They are really hot right now,
but they're all lifted.

They're all four-wheel drive.

They pull the tops off,
go drive them on the beach,

Put ls motors in them.

That's really what's
going on right now.

What are you gonna do
to this?

sell it to you

If you missed the 1970s
four-wheeling craze,

Here's the deal with scouts.
[ Horn honks ]

The first scouts were built in


They were also sold
as the outdoorsman's vehicle,

But had a touch
of style and comfort

That made the scout sort
of the forerunner of the s.u.v.

The scout ii debuted in '71,

And the basic sheet metal
didn't change much right up

Until the last one
came off the line in 1980.

Look at this.

You got scouts
already in the yard.

You are a scout aficionado,
it looks like.

Enthusiast.

-I can't get out.
-"Dukes of hazzard," man.

Come on.

Door handle don't work.
That's a negative.

-Get out.

So this is, what, a 304
or a 345, something like that?

I'm guessing it's the 345.

It's basically an orphan engine.

They don't really make much
aftermarket parts

For these things,
so if you want to hop

This thing up,
you're kind of on your own.

This is a boat anchor
right here.

Honestly, you can't leave
that engine in it.

Just toss it, yeah.

This is a problem.

The quarter panel
is a little bent, too.

You can get all the parts
you need for this.

They have them.

Even though the engine
has no aftermarket,

Really, the body panels do.

Only thing they don't have
is the front fenders.

Man, I didn't think
he crawled under the...

Richard:
it's got a couple of dents,

But it's one owner,
very little rust,

So if I can get
a good solid truck

That's not gonna be rusty
when we take it apart,

That's what I'm looking for.

-I love the interior.

the orange paint,

The stripes, the plaid seats.

It's pretty cool.

This, to me, is more

But at the same time, I'm like,
"it needs some attitude."

so we got a hellcat motor.

You may already know
that the dodge hellcat

Came out in 2015

With a 6.2-liter
supercharged hemi engine

Packed at 707 horsepower,
most of any muscle car ever.

But what you may not know
is that nobody's put

An actual
hellcat motor in a scout,

And that's exactly
what I'm fixing to do here.

This is gonna be down,
dirty, fast.

Let's put a new chassis under it
to handle all the power,

Trick out that crazy interior,
and the top, it's removable,

And I definitely want
to keep that.

So you're not going up.

You're going --
you want to go down with this?

I want to get rid
of the four-wheel drive,

Big meat in the back, okay?

Big, get it squished down low.

Why? It's a scout.

It should be up, outdoorsy,
four-wheel drive!

Like the shart cat meets
the hi-po hauler.

It's a cruiser that happens
to go really fast.

Right.

International came out
with the scout

To be a four-wheel-drive
utility vehicle.

It's a man's truck,
except if you're richard.

Now you're gonna turn it
into a boy's truck,

So I guess it'll now
become a boy scout.

But what I like about it
is the kookiness.

I like the stripes,
and I like the orange,

And I like the plaid interior.
-I do, too.

You would wear stripes
and plaid together.

-I do like the plaid.

Mike! You're gonna get to paint
something orange,

I want to have what I'm going

We hadn't painted
a lot of orange,

Low cruiser, got it,

for turning this 1979

Scout ii into
the scout ii hell.

Everyone has seen these lifted
and rolling on big wheels,

But what's the market
for another rock crawler?

We're gonna gas monkey
this one up.

When they go high,
we're going low to slam this

Scout to the ground.

Of course, that means losing
the four-wheel drive

And going with
all-new suspension

And a fordlink in the back.

Up front, we'll lose the old v8
and pack in a 707-horsepower

Hellcrate motor.

Inside, I'm losing the back
seats but keeping the plaid.

I mean, why not?

And outside, just to keep
the what-the-hell factor,

Mike will lay down
a fresh coat of orange

And a new stripe package.

I want it fast.
I want it low, but cruiseable,

And I want it done in
three weeks,

But I'm not holding back
on the budget

Because the guys are getting


That's a truck I could sell for
maybe twice what I put into it.

International harvester brought
rolls of cheap steel

And left it out in the rain.

What do you get when you

You get rust and that same
rusty steel

They used to build new scouts,
born rusty.

Usually that holds the moisture
and makes a big rust hole.

A spot like that?

Oh, usually that pocket
is all rusted up.

Yeah, look at it. It's great.
This thing is unreal.

These are the kind of things
we like to discover.

We made an absolute disaster.

The f40 that gas monkey built,
which was an amazing car,

Has found its way into

A not-so-amazing guy's

took it from him.

I really hung it
all out there on the line

When we bought a wrecked
ferrari f40 for 400 grand

And built it into a better car
than it was new.

Hall of famer reggie jackson

Paid 650 grand for it
at auction.

A year later, he took a loss
when he sold it for $590,000.

-He's fixing to lose 110 grand.

After a mechanic t-boned

So the owner of the car

When we got after it, the f40
had to come out better than new,

And that wouldn't come cheap.

Most of those parts
had to be imported.

Do you have any movement

We did major surgery
on the frame

And replaced
practically the entire body

made it lighter,

Faster, better handling,
and gave the ferrari purists

by painting it black.

we painted this black,

and we did it.

about the scout chassis.

We're about to start
rocking and rolling.

We're going to start tacking in,
measuring,

And getting everything lined up,
basically bring the frame rail

From the back to the front,
make one big chassis.

a full frame from scratch

To handle 707 horsepower?

We're running 1x3-inch
frame rails

And reinforcing all the seams
with steel fishplates.

That's the process they used
to use back

In the day on railroad tracks,
so that should tell you

How strong this frame's
gonna be.

When we're done,
we're gonna weld the chassis

To the scout body,
sheet metal around it

Which is gonna create
a superstrong chassis

Called the unibody.

half fully connected

To the front half or front
crossmember,

We're moving forward.

We can get this thing off
this table,

Set the chassis back
underneath the body.

I mean, everything can start
happening now.

Now we can get the frame over to
the body and weld them together.

this thing a unibody?

Unibody is short for
unified chassis and body.

When you make them one,
it becomes a unibody.

Up at the front.

Once we lock it all together,
weld it all together,

It becomes super strong,
so that's what we're excited for

Because we have a ton
of horsepower in this thing,

A little cage in it,
probably just the back half.

Pretty streetable vehicle,
should be pretty safe.

Can't really even say
we have a chassis anymore.

It's like the chassis
disappears,

And now it's just a unibody.

It's like, "where does your lap
go when you stand up?"

We're using an eight-speed
automatic transmission

From mopar.
It comes with a torque converter

For lightning-fast shifts
and acceleration.

We want to drop in the motor
and transmission

To do a mock-up
of how it's gonna

Sit inside the engine bay

So we can see where we want
to build our motor

And transmission mounts
before it all goes off to paint.

Looking at that, pan,
this crossmember.

Yeah, is that motor backwards
right now?

Now that we got the motor on,
can really look at it,

And the crossmember that we have
with the rack and pinion

And everything --
-yeah.

This front sump pan
is not going to clear.

It'll put our motor
right through the hood.

Our driveshaft would be
too high.

It would just create
too many problems down the road.
