Narrator:
right now on "fast n' loud"...
[ Tires screech ]
...hot-rod hunter
richard rawlings
And master mechanic
aaron kaufman
Take on this beat-up
f100 ford pickup.
It's definitely
a project, man.
[ Laughs ]
Narrator: they're gonna combine
parts from three different cars
And transform it
into a supertruck.
But this frankenstein ford
turns out to be a monster.
I'm pretty [bleep] frustrated
at the moment.
Narrator: richard tries
to reclaim his youth.
Rawlings: I had one of those
when I was a kid.
I spun mine around
more than I kept it straight.
Narrator: and his plan
to make a sweet k*lling
On a caddy convertible
hits a speed bump.
I'm thinking $5,000.
[ Laughs ]
Narrator: then richard looks
for a new assistant
And gets all he can handle.
I can pretty much put up with
whatever you've got.
That's a challenge right there.
You calling me out?
Kind of, yeah.
Everything's on the line
As the frankenstein truck
heads to auction.
Rawlings: please bid to win.
I need the money.
Narrator:
and it's guys gone wild...
Whoo!
...as richard tries to impress
a crowd of high rollers.
So, what
are we doing out here?
K.c.'S got a neighbor has like
a '67 or '68 ford shortwide.
Yeah, I'm familiar.
Yeah.
It's supposed to be
a pretty rad deal
That he got all into
over the last few years.
How far along is it?
K.c. Says this thing
is in, like, pieces.
K.c. Had a lead on a '68 truck
his neighbor had,
Kind of tore it apart,
stuffed it in the garage.
Just a kind of
a forgotten project.
Definitely worth coming out here
to check this one out.
So, it's just like
the shop truck.
It's just like the shop truck,
supposedly.
Huh.
But it's not all done up
like we did the shop truck.
I was thinking
if we got it cheap enough,
We make a show version
of the shop truck.
Shop truck's
pretty freaking rough.
At the end of the day,
I mean,
The '67, '68 ford short beds
are pretty popular.
I like them.
They're easy to sell.
I don't know.
I think I disagree.
I think they're just beginning
to come along in popularity.
'67 Through '72 chevy trucks,
that's the go-to old truck.
But I think
we're starting to see
A popularity increase
in them.
Well, here he is.
Let's see if we can get a deal.
Where's the truck at?
Is it in the garage?
I guess.
Kaufman: we like these trucks.
We've got one.
He said the body was really nice
on this one.
We know how easy
they are to put together,
So we'll figure
we'll give it a shot.
Rawlings: he said meet him
at the garage.
Maybe he's just
building anticipation.
Here he comes.
It's like "waaaa!"
[ Laughs ]
There's some
of a pickup truck.
Man, he wasn't kidding
When he said you had a project
truck that was kind of apart.
It's definitely
a project, man.
Wow.
Yeah, there she is, man.
Kaufman: whoo.
I see a bunch of parts.
I've got a lot of parts.
I've got all the parts.
Let's get it outside.
I can't tell anything in here.
We're up against
all this stuff.
Does it roll
pretty good?
It rolls good.
We can roll it right out
And you can have a look
at the body and stuff.
I've already done a little bit
of bodywork on it.
Rawlings:
when it comes to comfort,
The 1968 ford f100
was ahead of its time.
Man:
now, watch and listen, folks,
As our ford pickup
Is driven over a bone-jarring
t*rture-test road.
The bell on the front wheel
tells you
The wheels are taking
a real pounding.
But the bell inside --
well, it's quiet.
Get yourself a '68 ford pickup.
Works like a truck,
rides like a car.
Rawlings: what got you started
on this truck?
I mean, why'd you pick it?
Was it a local truck or...?
My dad had one of these.
Oh, okay. I got you.
And I ran into a bind money-wise
and I had to sell his,
And here we are
back in other bind
Where I want to fix up
my '53.
Yeah.
So, something's
got to go.
Yeah.
But I love this truck,
man, 'cause it was one
like my dad had.
Kaufman:
kerry had a lot of sentimental
attachment with the truck.
His father
had one like it,
And he was really trying
to re-create it.
I just don't think
he had the time,
And I think he saw the light and
said he can free up some money,
Put it in his other projects,
and let us have a good one.
What were you gonna do
motor-wise and transmission?
I've got a 4.6
to go in it.
Yeah?
Nice motor.
Is that something you're wanting
to include with the truck?
I could include that
for the right money.
You tore this thing down.
I've got everything --
Most of that shelf right there
is all the smaller parts.
What are you thinking you need
for a project like this?
You don't have to do anything
else, put anything together.
We're just gonna take
the parts and pieces
And throw it on a trailer
and leave.
You'll have
your garage back today.
Cash money...
About 5 grand.
Man. I-i --
No, I don't see that.
I'm thinking about $1,200.
$1,200?
Y'all didn't bring
no money?
Oh, I brought money.
But, I mean, I got to make
a living in this, too.
You ain't gonna get this
for $1,200.
You know, I think I hurt his
feelings hitting him at $1,200.
He said $5,000,
and I'm like 1,200 bucks.
I thought
he was gonna hit us.
Oh, yeah.
Nah, I'm gonna have to pass,
man.
I mean, this is something that
I was kind of doing for my dad.
Well, I mean, I'm not trying
to hurt your feelings.
I'm just a businessman.
Y'all can do better
than $1,200, man.
I mean, I know
where you're coming from,
But you got to understand,
you know,
What I've got invested
in this thing
And help me a little bit more
than $1,200.
Well, I mean, it is...
[ Sighs ]
Aaron,
what do you think?
I mean, I think we could
probably do $2,500.
It's just -- it's not about
the value of the truck.
It's more about the risk
for what we got to throw at it.
That's the best you got?
Aaron knows it
as well as I do.
I mean, if he says $2,500,
I think that's where we're at.
All right.
Let's get it over with, man.
Go ahead and take it.
I'll see if I wallow my way
back in the house
And tell mama
I just got it --
Don't tell her
until we leave.
Just got boned.
$2,500 It is.
All right, partner.
See if I can count that out
for you.
Wallace: I settled for $2,500,
you know.
I know they had some more money
in their pocket,
But I couldn't get it,
so I just settled for $2,500,
And that'll be enough
to get me what I need to get.
Now we got to load
all this stuff.
You're probably just gonna
sit in the chair and watch.
I'm gonna watch.
[ Laughs ]
I don't blame you.
We were able to get the deal
done at $2,500.
I feel comfortable there.
I think that's fair.
And bottom line is,
I'm running a business.
I had to get this thing bought,
get it back to the shop,
Get it put back together,
sell it, and make a profit.
Rawlings: what's up, guys?
It's about time
we get a truck.
Well, you know,
it was too good a deal.
We couldn't hardly
pass it up.
I think it worked out
really well.
I mean, he had --
Looks like most of the truck
is just not there.
You know,
it's not put together.
So, how long
has he been working on it?
He's working on it
just like most people do.
They put in the garage,
they take it all apart,
They sit there
and drink some beer
And look at what they got.
And then they go,
"oh [bleep]
I got to put it
back together."
"I got to go to bed."
Yeah.
Rawlings:
there's a wwg auction in a week,
and as of right now,
They don't have
a single truck in it.
I'd love to get this truck built
and in that auction.
I don't even know
if it's possible
Because this is
a major fabrication project.
We got a ton of stuff.
I don't even know
what's in half these boxes.
It looks like we got
all the weather stripping.
Bumper brackets.
Grab the grille shell.
It looks like
a finished grille.
That looks like
original truck wiring.
You want to grab
this core support?
I guess he was going
with black interior.
Looks like we're going
with black interior.
Well, your job's gonna be
a little short
This time, boss man.
You don't have to order much
it looks like.
Well, maybe for once
I made a good deal.
Kaufman: so far, the truck's
looking pretty good.
Of course,
we don't have an engine,
But k.c. Ran over
to his neighbor's
To pick up the motor he agreed
to throw in with the truck.
Then we'll know if we really
have something or not.
Is the rest
of this ours?
Yeah.
Where did that come from?
He says
it's an '06 crown vic.
He read on the internet
that they fit,
So he bought it and he's
got no use for it now that
he doesn't have the truck.
Well, we know for a fact
they fit.
I know.
Holy [bleep] dude.
Mathieu: hey, I hope you're
on your "a" game, aaron.
What are you gonna do with
all this damn wiring?
Yeah, it's all right.
There's only
about five or six wires
That actually run anything
in this, so...
That's a big-a*s motor.
That thing will look cool
down in there.
Motor and tr*nny came out
of a wrecked lincoln mark viii?
Uh-huh.
He said 20,000 miles on it.
He said that was
Well, man, let's get it up there
next to the truck.
I mean, if this'll go in
and we can put that clip on,
I mean, we might have to build
this damn thing.
Wwg said they had a spot.
I got a couple hours
to make a decision,
Then we got a week.
Should just bolt right in,
right?
I don't know.
Rawlings:
this is an unexpected surprise.
I mean, the guy had a 4.6-liter
ford motor for this truck,
And it looks like
it's in good shape.
This is gonna add some value
to the overall project.
Kaufman:
so, what do you think now?
I like it.
I mean, I've got visions
of grandeur in my head.
I want, like, a badass,
you know, painted up.
All we know how to do is
make things badass.
Yeah, well,
I'm just saying
I want to go a little bit
further than norm with this.
I want, like,
a magazine-cover-type truck.
I'm in.
If everybody likes it,
I say we do it.
Got a week flat.
That's paint, front clip,
motor, tr*nny, rear end,
Everything else
associated with it,
Put the whole damn thing
back together with interior,
And it's all
got to be perfect
And finished out
and detailed and ready.
Yeah, we're pretty sure
what it involves.
What about our spot?
Did they say that we can get in?
Yeah, we're in.
They'll give us
a prime spot
With the truck
that I just described.
So, what we got is
a '68 ford f100 pickup.
We've got an engine
from a lincoln mark viii
And a front end
from an '06 crown vic.
But why stop there?
We're gonna create a supertruck
By combining parts
that usually don't go together.
But aaron's a genius,
and he'll make it work.
We'll add a rear end
from an '01 f150,
Mustang exhaust,
And special edition
shelby wheels.
If this thing
isn't frankenstein enough,
K.c.'S going with
the original paint color.
We checked the vin number.
This one's gonna be
boxwood green.
The finished product,
This thing's gonna look
and load like a pickup but
drive like a cop car.
A truck like this can bring
And we need a big sale,
so I'm going all-in on this on.
You'd better call your wife
And let her know we ain't
coming home this week.
Yeah, no joke.
"We"?
Why are you coming?
What do you need
for a car like this?
I'd like to be
at $7,500 on it.
Kaufman: still got a problem
with the exhaust system.
Still too low.
You want to go grab my notepad
out of the office?
Rawlings: aaron and the guys are
breaking down the ford pickup,
And I'm gonna see
if I can find a car to flip,
Bring a little quick cash
to the old gas monkey garage.
I've been in the business
for about 8 or 10 years,
And I've heard about spike
for a while now.
He's another car guy
here in town
That does kind of
sort of the same thing I do.
He had some cars
out there for sale
That a friend of mine
turned me on to.
Anybody here?
Yo.
Thought I'd come out
and see what he has.
Got quite a few cars crammed
in this little building.
I like that kind of thing,
you know.
I like to have to move
around and crawl around
just to see what he's got.
Pleasure to meet you.
Pretty cool
'57 hardtop here.
Yeah. It's red.
Here's one
that's not quite done but...
You know, gas monkey cut
its teeth on these cars.
I got a hot rod miata here
I'll fetch a hell of a deal on.
I don't do
too much foreign stuff.
Just nothing striking my fancy,
you know.
It's either too much money
or too far torn apart,
And then over in the corner,
boom, it catches my eye.
What's up with the trans am
over here?
Got that from my brother.
No kidding.
It's the right motor.
'77 Trans am.
I had one of those
when I was a kid.
In 1969,
pontiac started making
A specialty package
of the firebird.
They called it a trans am.
"Smokey and the bandit,"
"knight rider" --
Those were trans ams.
And it was kind of
the last big-block muscle car.
In '77, they made it
with big headlights,
A big-a*s fire-breathing bird
on the hood.
It was cool.
It was a kickass car back then.
It's a kickass car today.
We did a little
"dukes of hazzarding" in this
When we were kids.
I spun mine around
more than I kept it straight.
a*s end always wanted to go
faster than the front end.
Really cool thing about this car
is it's got the hurst "t" tops.
These are rare.
They got stolen all the time.
They're irreplaceable.
They don't make them anymore.
And for them to be here
and in good condition
Makes the whole car
right there.
This would be
a many-thousand-dollar decision
If these were missing.
Man, that's pretty cool.
What do you need
for a car like this?
I'll tell you what.
Supposedly runs and drives.
The motor's okay.
I'd like to be
at $7,500 on it.
Man.
That's a number
we can work with.
He hasn't even played
with it yet.
He's had it for a few years
just sitting there.
It's gonna take
all the normal stuff,
So I got to get him down
on his price.
[ Sighs ]
I was thinking closer
to like $4,500.
Oh,
that's not gonna happen.
I believe there's 61,000,
Which is
pretty low for these.
There's a little bit
of room there.
I could do 5,500 cash dollars
right now.
You got dead presidents?
Oh, yeah.
[ Chuckles ]
All right, man.
We can do it at that.
Cool. Thanks, spike.
You're welcome.
I lost a little money
on the deal.
I'm cool with that.
[ Laughs ]
I think you're $100 short there.
Let's see.
No, it's right.
That's right?
All right. Good deal.
Rawlings: I think
I can put a grand into it.
I'm sitting at $6,500.
As long as I don't have
any major problems,
Then I'm gonna put it out there
for $8,500,
Maybe settle down at $7,500.
I made a grand.
It's a beautiful day.
On my way back to gas monkey.
Kaufman: we finally sorted out
all the pieces and parts
For the '68 short bed.
Go ahead and assemble this stuff
and then...
The first thing
we're gonna have to do is
Modify the frame to accommodate
All the performance upgrades
we're planning.
We're gonna ditch
the coil buckets.
This whole crossmember's
coming out.
The "i" beams,
the old steering.
Everything's coming out
and going away.
You know, we're combining
So many parts
of different cars together,
We started calling
this truck frankenstein.
So, I guess this is the part
Where we get after it
with a torch.
Today's gonna be
a real heavy day of fabrication.
Everything we're gonna be doing
is cutting, welding, grinding.
Get me a notepad and start
making notes on material.
Rawlings:
you know this is a serious build
when aaron asks for his notepad.
Usually he's got the whole car
planned out in his head,
Right down to the floor mats.
Kaufman: I really like
our 1968 ford pickup truck.
Working on it
is a mechanic's dream,
But I won't be having
any dreams this week
Because that would imply
I'd have time to get to bed
at some point.
We put the motor in the truck
late last night.
Get to looking at it
this morning,
We're gonna have to
pull it back out.
Mcmillan:
while we had the engine in,
There's just too many things
that were happening.
This crossmember's
just in the way,
So I'm gonna trim
this crossmember out,
Something like this...
Aah!
...and weld the new top in it...
...so we have more room
for the engine.
Kaufman:
we got the engine back in,
And the transmission
seems to clear nicely.
But the exhaust system
could still be a problem.
Still too low.
The exhaust was just unhappy
living in that situation,
Mainly because
we ordered a mustang exhaust
And this isn't a mustang.
What we're gonna do is
cut the exhaust in pieces
And use it as a kit
and make it fit in our truck.
Good news is,
the front end's complete.
So today, we're gonna work on
the back half of the truck,
Starting by relocating
the gas tank.
Kaufman: the reason we're going
through all these extra steps
To put the gas tank in the back
is simple safety.
We're just trying
to get the gas tank
Out of the cab
with the driver.
All right, so we've got all of
our heavy fabrication done.
It's getting late, and we're
definitely in a time crunch,
So we got to get this
to the paint shop.
We're clear.
Richard's pulling out
all the stops on this paint job.
He wants it to be show quality,
as glossy as a magazine cover.
A paint job like that
takes time.
Time is something
we just don't have a lot of.
Big problem.
What is it?
The seat don't fit.
We're on [bleep]
cutting time now.
Well, get the [bleep]
out of our way.
Rawlings:
got up early one morning,
That's when I do my work --
From about 4:00 in the
morning till about 7:00
before I come in here,
Just searching the net,
Hitting all the local websites
and the national websites
Looking for cars that I can flip
and make a little money on.
'67 Caddy popped up.
It's a local car.
It's here.
Old lady bought it in 1970.
Great car. Two owner.
Cool deal, man.
I thought it was a steal
for 5 grand.
It's a pretty decent car,
phipps.
Hey, yeah.
Looks like it.
I rolled it over
to my neighbor phipps' shop,
And he's gonna do
a little work on it for me.
The wwg auction's in five days.
If we want to make that,
I can't afford
to pull any of my guys
Off the frankenstein ford
project.
Just the normal b.s., You know.
Gasoline, check the plugs.
Let's see if it'll fire up,
Then we'll decide
what we'll do with it.
Sure, sure.
This caddy's
a little rough in spots,
But the buyer I have in mind,
he isn't gonna care.
I've got the '68
all seam-sealed and taped up,
Sanded, prepped,
the whole nine yards.
This truck
is getting the royal treatment.
We're using absolute
top-shelf primers and paints.
Just the materials alone
are gonna cost more than $3,000,
But it's gonna be worth it.
This will be show-quality truck.
We're pretty excited to lay
the paint down on this one.
It's gonna be a nice color.
It's the original color
as far as the vin number says,
So we'll get ready
to get rolling.
Richard only gave me 24 hours,
Which would normally be insane
for a show-quality paint job,
But I got lucky because
a lot of the prep work
Has already been done.
I can make it.
I'm just gonna have to
work around the clock
To get it done.
Rawlings: I thought I'd clean up
the trans am I bought, you know,
Make sure it runs
and drives well enough to sell.
This brings back
a lot of memories.
I had one of these
in high school.
My parents told me
I couldn't have it
'Cause they couldn't afford
the car or the insurance,
So I just showed up with it.
They didn't know
I'd been squirreling away
All my lawn-mowing money
forever.
My dad says, "well,
how'd you get that car?"
I said, "I bought it."
And he goes, "well,
I'm not paying the insurance."
I said, "I already bought
a year's worth of insurance."
So, that was that.
I think he was a little proud
That I was able
to pull that off.
I can't wait to get this thing
out on the road.
Phipps got it running for me.
I want to pull
these "t" tops off,
Take it for a cruise,
And, you know,
relive a little high school.
They come off like that.
Then you can slide in
like bo duke or somebody
And party your a*s off.
Yeah, you know, almost all
my friends from high school
Always ask me
what happened to my trans am.
Kind of wish I had it.
Never found another one like it.
This is as close to the one
I had as I can find.
It's white.
Mine was red.
A 6.6-liter big-block 400.
It's got a 4-speed.
Some people call
this big shifter a hog leg.
Let's go rip this hog leg.
A great way to keep your car
clean after washing it --
Do donuts in the dirt
But make sure to take
your "t" tops off first.
You know,
I love how this thing drives.
It's got a great suspension.
You can kick through the gears.
It's awesome.
I gave 5,500 bucks for this car.
Got another $1,000
in miscellaneous stuff.
This car's gonna make a grand,
maybe 2 grand pretty easy.
If that's not worth 7,500 bucks,
I don't know what is.
Kaufman: while k.c.
Has been painting the body,
We've been going nonstop
at the garage.
Finishing the frame,
working on the motor.
Now we've got to get this truck
back and get it running.
The guys are putting in
just wicked hours.
Getting here early, staying
late, you know, nonstop go.
I mean, we shovel some food
in our mouth
And pick up tools
and keep going again.
It's just part of how it is.
That color's kickass.
Rawlings:
I spent 7 grand materials,
labor, all that stuff.
But hell, it is kickass.
What's the plan today?
Try and finish
the truck.
And I think we'll probably
be unsuccessful,
So we'll try and get
as far on that as we can.
We've got a major deadline that
we absolutely can't be late.
It's not like
there's a fallback plan.
We absolutely can't miss
this one.
So, we'll keep working
until we fall down
Or get the job done.
Sorry.
So, I got to hop out of the shop
for a second.
I'll make sure
the guys keep rolling.
So, I give them a list here,
And then they can just
through it methodically.
When they're done, cross it off,
move on to the next thing.
Rawlings:
I'm going all out on this one.
I'm gonna spend 2,500 bucks
And do the complete interior
in this truck.
What's up, sue?
Yeah?
What's the problem?
Big problem.
What is it?
The seat don't fit.
The cover don't fit.
Sometimes ordering parts
just sucks.
You got for all original
seat covers for a '68 ford f100,
And you get them,
and they don't fit.
I got to cut this piece off,
change this piece.
Can you match it?
Where's the headliner?
It has to be perfect.
Sue wants to use the
same material she used
on the headliner.
It's not an exact match.
And on this truck,
it's just not gonna work.
See?
It's a different color.
Push in --
you get holes.
Okay, well, it's just
a different color, though.
No, it's not a different color.
That's the way you look at it.
There's like 800 shades
of black.
I'm not doing this.
Aaron will be pissed
if I choose wrong,
So I told him to come over
and check it out.
[ Whistling ]
Hey, uh, sue.
Yeah?
What are you gonna do with
the rabbit once he gets big?
Are we gonna eat him?
Yeah.
I'm serious.
Yeah.
Richard is so gullible.
Can we eat him now?
See the grill over there?
What?
All I do is
turn on the fire.
Oh, on the grill.
[ Both laugh ]
Ridiculous.
This is the headliner material
that she used,
And she wants to use it
to replace --
But it's gonna butt up
against --
see, he already put
the finger marks.
Who did that?
I did that on accident.
We'll fix it.
He did it, not me.
Well, he's not supposed to
touch anything
That has to do with
a car.
I see it.
Is that color okay?
My deal is --
I'm okay with that.
Kaufman:
the seats are fine.
I'm actually more worried
about the headliner
That richard managed to jack up.
He's not supposed to touch
anything with the car anymore.
Yeah, I'm not allowed
to touch anything.
Mathieu: scot's got his marching
orders, and I've got mine.
The project
I'm working on right now,
We need to get this thing
insulated and cleaned up
And the sound done.
There you got, scot.
What do you think?
That's what
I'm talking about.
Kaufman: I feel like everybody's
getting it pulled together
And it will get done on time.
But at this point in the game,
it's a little concerning.
You know, clock's ticking,
and the truck's not running.
So, that's a bit of an issue
right now.
Mcmillan:
looks like we're gonna have to
pull another all-nighter.
When I need
some sustained energy,
I rely on two things --
Pizza...
And ice cream.
Rawlings: we are down
to the wire on this one.
In less than 24 hours,
This truck has to be
at the auction block.
Aaron and the guys have been
working around the clock,
And I just hope
they're in the home stretch.
All right,
I see battery power.
It's starting to look important.
What's going on?
We're just gonna --
we're gonna fire it up
Or try and fire it up
to see if it busts off.
We're not gonna run it long.
Cool, cool.
Let me get out of the way.
I'll just watch.
Kaufman:
we've got the battery hooked up.
It's time to test the engine
and make sure it turns over.
[ Engine sputtering ]
Unless I keep going...
Should have primed.
[ Engine sputtering ]
No change.
[ Engine sputtering ]
Maybe we get it running.
[ Engine sputtering ]
Got a little bit of backfire
on that one.
Aaron always plays it cool
when he's under pressure,
But I'm freaking out.
This truck's gutted,
it won't start,
And this thing's got to
be on the auction block
in less than a day.
This situation's not good.
We're on [bleep]
cutting time now.
We got 23 hours.
So, uh...
Well, get the [bleep]
out our way.
I can do that.
Kaufman: no surprise,
you know, we're in the last day,
The last 24 hours before our car
has to be somewhere
And there's no front end,
there's no back end,
And it doesn't really run yet.
[ Engine sputtering ]
Rawlings: we built this truck
from the ground up
Using parts
from multiple vehicles
And making them
all work together.
I've already got 20 grand in it,
But I'm betting big that
it'll sell big at the auction.
I just hope
they get it done in time.
[ Engine sputtering ]
Man:
you want a notepad?
That's a challenge right there.
You calling me out?
Kind of, yeah.
I'm pretty [bleep] frustrated
at the moment.
Now, it burns like hell.
Aah!
[ Engine sputtering ]
Yeah.
Kaufman: okey-dokey.
Well, carry on.
It made noise.
Let's finish up.
I just wanted to get
something out of it.
The truck's motor made noise,
and that's good enough.
This modern engine
has a lot of sensors.
Only about half of them
are hooked up,
So we're gonna keep
plowing ahead with the wiring.
Rawlings: so, while the guys
keep working on the f100 truck,
I'm gonna do what I do best.
Flip some cars for money.
Bottom line, my buddy magnus
is coming in town from sweden,
And I got some cadillacs
for him.
I need to sell one so I can put
the money in this f100 build.
What's up, magnus?
Anytime I buy an old cadillac,
I think of magnus.
I mean, that's what he does.
He comes to texas,
he buys big cadillacs,
And he takes them back
to sweden.
Magnus.
Look at you.
You're starting to look
like a texan.
You're driving
a beat-up suburban.
Yeah.
Well, here you go.
Yeah.
I'm buying cadillac always
Because cadillac,
that's number one.
We chucked
a battery in it.
In sweden,
when you see a good car,
It's "ooh, what a cadillac."
You said no side moldings.
What do you know about --
That's all I know
that's missing on the car.
It's like it is here.
Yes, sir. Exactly.
I know they're very hard
to find, the side moldings.
It needs seats.
And because we get
a lot of rain there,
We need a new top.
If it'd been done here,
Of course,
take down the top and go.
Yeah, there's nothing to do
in texas.
It's just a big, giant,
flat space
Of fornication
and drinking.
Yep.
I'm really glad
that richard called me
Because I needed one more car,
And I'm really short
on time here.
I need to catch a plane
here soon,
So I was down here real quick.
Counting top, seats,
I'm thinking $5,000.
You got jet lag
Before you even get on the plane
this afternoon?
Are you kidding me?
I got 5,500 bucks
in this caddy already.
That's not gonna fly.
$7,000.
Convertible,
driving around in sweden.
You know,
eating chocolate.
$5,600.
[ Laughs ]
[ Laughs ]
How about 6,500 bucks?
I go $6,000 even.
Come on.
I wanted $7,500 for this.
Bottom line, it's worth that.
But magnus does
a lot of business with me.
We haggled a little bit.
Come on.
I need $6,500.
We split it.
All right.
$6,250.
Yep.
I still made some money,
And the car's gone
and I didn't clean it.
Thank you. Take care.
Einarsson: $6,250.
That's a fair price
for this car.
Convertible cadillac,
sweden, you go.
Rawlings: as gas monkey grows,
I'm finding that keeping up
with parts, orders, cash --
It's just getting out of hand.
I don't know how to work
this laptop,
And it doesn't have a mouse.
I don't know what to do
with anything.
We're not hooked up to the net.
The guy who does my hair,
He says his wife's
looking for work.
And I figure what the hell?
Maybe she can help us out.
Rawlings: basically
what I'm looking for is,
I got to have somebody
that can handle my money.
I don't know anything
about cars.
That's scot.
How are you?
Aaron's around here
somewhere.
He's the ugly guy
with the beard.
[ Pneumatic drill whirring ]
And scot makes noise.
Aaron's got the beard.
That's about it.
So, basically what I'm needing
is the go-to person.
I mean...
I can do your stuff.
Can you put up with
my [bleep] though?
I have six kids.
Six kids?
I can pretty much put up with
whatever you've got.
Oh. I don't know.
That's a challenge right there.
You calling me out?
Kind of, yeah.
I don't sugarcoat very well.
I try to mind my manners.
What do you do?
I run
my family's business.
What is
your family's business?
They own a meat market.
I want to go there and chop up
some meat or something.
Be like rocky,
hitting that...
Yeah, okay.
Yeah, not me.
Christi seems kind of tough.
I mean, six kids, a meat market,
and a kickass attitude?
She's gonna fit right in.
I don't really like kids
that much,
So you don't have to bring them
up here, do you?
No.
[ Laughs ]
I don't like them.
They're just always
in the way.
That's terrible.
I know.
As long as they don't talk crazy
to me, I'll be all right.
Hey, aaron.
Kaufman: yep.
How we doing
on this thing?
We're down to the last little
bit of fabrication work,
Last little bit --
Scot just finished
the shift linkage on it.
So, finish all the computer
brackets a minute ago.
We've got a bench rail to make,
a couple radiator lines,
And then we got to
take it all apart,
Put all the rubber grommets
and the inner fenders and stuff,
Stick it all back on, put it on,
and start pulling wires.
We expect to have it running
late tonight.
It's got to be at the auction
tomorrow night.
So, I'm heading down
to houston,
And I'll get everybody
primed and ready
And hopefully somebody
will step up and buy it.
Well, they'd be crazy
if they don't.
Rawlings:
so, this houston auction,
It's got a country-club feel
to it.
There's a big party
the night before.
These guys got big bellies
and even bigger wallets,
And that's why
I got to get down there.
Kaufman: these shelby wheels
and tires cost 3,000 bucks
But well worth it for the look.
When we get back from exhaust,
it's gonna be 100 miles an hour.
The last major bit of work to be
done is the exhaust system.
Since we don't have
an exhaust bender here,
The only way
this gets done quickly is
To send the truck
to the muffler shop.
All right.
Truck's all loaded.
Fixing to head to
the exhaust shop, get it back,
Just finish up the last little
details, head to auction.
Rawlings:
so, I'm back at la torretta
Just north of houston
for another wg event.
These guys throw
a k*ller c*ck party
The night before the auction
just to get the buyers primed.
Freakin' cool.
Tonight's the preview
of the auction.
This is when all the cars
are out here on the lawn.
You can touch them.
You can sit in them.
You can feel them.
You know what they're all about.
This is an awkward position
for me.
Usually we finish our vehicles
on time,
And we're up against the wall
on this one.
Vehicle's not done.
It's not here.
And I'm gonna have to
schmooze around at this party
And tell everybody
how badass it is, and
I can't show it to them.
God almighty.
A shelby cobra like this
cost you a million bucks.
This is about as stressful
as I've been at an auction.
We spent all week
building that ford truck,
And it's really important that
we get it here, we show it --
What? Oh, the bar's open.
Got to go.
What's up, brothers?
What's up, man?
Mr. Moore, how are you?
Richard rawlings.
One lime for the lovely
young lady here.
Networking's a huge part
of my business.
Inside, it's k*lling me
Not knowing how the guys
are doing with the truck.
They're still working on it.
But I'm not gonna let that
stagger my swagger.
The world is our oyster,
And we can snort it,
drink it,
Chop it up, fry it,
or [bleep] it.
It doesn't matter.
These guys are drinking
champagne, wearing bowties,
Think they're badass for looking
at half-million-dollar cars.
You know what the difference is
between them and me?
Absolutely nothing.
So, you telling me
That you can snort a shot
of tequila up your nose.
I'm gonna snort it
up my nose.
Is this some kind of mississippi
tequila sh**ting or what?
It's a little okie trick.
You oklahomans,
you're [bleep] stupid.
They ain't learned
how to pull it yet.
[Bleep] no.
I'm ready.
I'll hold your hat.
Get it.
[ Laughs ]
Aren't you supposed to squirt
lime in your eye after that?
[ Laughs ]
Holy [bleep]
Kaufman:
so we just got the truck back
from the exhaust shop.
It's gonna be
seven hours we have left
Before we have to be
on a trailer.
We've probably got
To finish up with the wiring.
But we've got
three guys working on it,
So just gonna haul a*s,
see if we can't make it.
Man: let's do this.
Let's do it.
You got it in you.
I know you do, brother.
[ Laughs ]
Ohh!
You got half of it.
Whoa.
Now do the other side.
Here you go.
I hate you, j.d. Pass.
I love you, richard rawlings.
Love you, brother.
[ Laughs ]
Whoa.
Hurts all the way
in your ear, man.
Wow!
These go to the starter
down here.
I got that close.
Everything's [bleep] close.
My starter wire's
not gonna work.
They're gonna burn up.
Yeah.
Well, the transmission shift
linkage is gonna burn up, too.
The plastic end that snaps in,
they won't live there.
Kaufman:
so, we've got a new problem.
Scot and I just discovered
The muffler shop
managed to tangle
The new exhaust system
in the wiring.
This is
just a [bleep] mess.
How did he manage that?
If the hot pipes
burn through the wiring,
It could short the truck out,
make it undrivable.
This late in the game,
that's the last thing we need.
I got to be honest,
I'm pretty [bleep] frustrated.
This is a time k*ller.
The only thing
that would make this worse
Is if richard was here.
He'd be freaking the hell out.
Wherever he's at,
I hope he's too distracted
to call and check in.
That's enough.
[ Sniffles ]
Holy cow, my nose hurts.
Kaufman:
I got it snug now.
What does that look like
back there?
Good enough.
Yeah.
Kaufman: it took us a while,
But we managed to fix the
exhaust, sort out the wiring.
The question now is whether
we can finish this thing
In time to make it to auction.
It's gonna be close.
Hey, scot.
Yeah?
What do you think
of the seat, man?
I don't know how much I am
into plush inserts, but...
[ Grunts ]
It sits a lot better
than it looks.
Leans on your side.
Maybe
we can take a nap now.
Oh [bleep]
Boss man's back.
Let's get back to work.
Rawlings: the auction's
about to get going.
I was hoping
aaron would be here by now.
I know he's already left
the shop.
And there's buyers
in there with cash,
And they're waiting
to buy this truck.
No truck, no aaron.
What the hell
am I supposed to do?
Dude, you're cutting it close,
aren't you?
Just a little bit.
Holy cow.
Truck looks good?
It looks great.
Auction's already started.
Let's get it off, man.
I want to take it
for a spin.
I'm ready to drive it.
Kaufman: I don't know what time
it is or what day it is.
I'm so exhausted,
I can barely remember my name.
All I know is
we got the truck done
And we got to the auction
Before it's scheduled
to be on the block.
[ Engine turns over ]
Rawlings: whoo!
When I left the shop,
the truck was still in pieces.
I've never actually seen it
put completely together.
That's what I'm talking about.
He rolls this thing
off the truck and I'm like,
"Ha ha! "Holy cow!
This thing is unbelievable!"
[ Engine revs ]
Whoo!
It was in pieces
and it needed everything,
And that's what gas monkey
does best.
Make them fast
and make them loud.
In this case, we made it
fast, loud, and green.
It's everything
it's supposed to be.
It's a badass hot rod.
Kaufman: you know,
it's a badass hot rod.
But it's a brand-new truck.
It's like a wolf
wearing sheep's clothing.
We picked up this motor
That had allegedly been sitting
for 15 years.
Gave us
a little bit of trouble,
But we think we maxed out
the potential of this old motor.
The wheels are a big indication
of what's going on
Underneath the hood
and underneath this truck.
These are special-edition
shelby 20s all the way around.
We color-matched the bumper,
the grille, the door handles
To the wheels
just to tie it all together.
We pulled the dash pad,
smoothed it out,
Put it in a set
of classic-instrument gauges,
Put in a nice
little am/fm stereo.
It runs
like a scalded ape --
We expect to see better
than 20 miles a gallon on this.
You got your choice
of 20-mile-a-gallon cars.
It could be a junk import
or it could be one of these.
I'd go with one of these.
Whoo!
[ Engine revs ]
Man: okay, and what's coming up
on the block next
Is a big surprise.
We have a special introduction
on this car.
Mr. Richard rawlings,
ladies and gentlemen,
From gas monkey garage.
First of all, this is a mystery
car that we built for you guys.
We built this
in the last seven days.
This thing is a work of art.
If you came into my shop
And you wanted us
to build this truck for you,
It'd be well over 100 grand.
Bottom line, that guy
right there with the crazy beard
Has been working for seven days
straight with no sleep.
And this thing is unbelievable.
I drove it around the block
a minute ago, and it is k*ller.
So, please bid to win.
It's no reserve.
And I need the money.
Man: there it is,
ladies and gentlemen.
Rawlings: I put nearly 30 grand
in this truck.
It's got to bring at least that
just so I can break even.
What do you want to pay?
$10,000.
$20,000.
$25,000.
Now $30,000.
$30,000 Bid.
$30,000 Bid.
Now $40,000.
$40,000.
Bid me $30,000, bid me $40,000.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
$40,000,
Now give $45,000.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
$45,000.
$45,000.
The bid seated here at $40,000.
Bid me $45,000.
They worked for hours
and hours and hours.
There it is.
$45,000.
I have it on the telephone here
ahead of you.
$45,000.
Bid me $50,000.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
$47,500.
Now $50,000.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
$50,000. $50,000.
Buy a winner. Buy a winner.
$50,000.
$50,000 Bid.
$52,500.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
Fair warning. Anybody else
want to bid at $52,500?
And i...
Sold! $50,000.
Congratulations.
Well bought.
Bam! 50 Grand
on the phone bidder.
Whoo!
[ Laughs ]
My god!
Did you see that?
Wow.
I'm tickled to death.
I did my job.
The truck did its job,
and I think everyone's happy.
On a $2,000 truck
we drug out of a guy's garage,
That's badass.
I say we owe him
a case of beer
Or at least a cake and a card
or something.
Narrator: this week,
Richard made a quick flip
on a '67 caddy convertible,
Spending $5,000.
He spent $500 to get it running
And a found a swede
who had to have it.
Richard revisited
his high-school glory days
And bought a trans am
for $5,500.
He can't bring himself
to part with the car just yet.
It remains
in his private collection.
But the frankenstein f100
was his cash cow.
He bought the truck for $2,500.
He installed a modern engine,
Put in an exhaust
from a mustang,
And the suspension
from a crown vic.
Richard also gave the truck
a show-quality paint job,
Custom wheels and tires,
And worked his crew
around the clock.
All told, he spent $29,500
on parts and labor.
He hit a home run at auction
When the truck sold for $50,000.
It was a k*ller week
for gas monkey
With 18,750 reasons to party.
Rawlings:
aaron's been working his rear
off so hard on this truck
That I think he actually fell
asleep on the auction block.
But I'm watching the people,
and their hands are going up.
It's like $10,000, $15,000,
$20,000, $25,000, $30,000.
I mean,
it's just rolling like crazy.
And they were excited.
They liked the truck.
The truck had the right
style, the right motor,
the right everything.
You guys k*lled it.
You guys
overdid yourselves.
I feel like
I overdid myself.
Yeah, you're probably
[bleep] tired.
When you got
a pocketful of cash,
It's time to just party,
right?
Where's the bar?
I'm ready to go.
Let's go.
