Narrator:
right now on "fast n' loud"...
[ Tires screech ]
Hot rod hunter richard rawlings
And master mechanic
aaron kaufman
Close the deal
on a '78 ford fairmont.
[ Laughing ]
oh, my, that's ugly.
But they're gonna push
this fairmont
In a completely different
direction.
Push, richard. Push.
Aah-ow!
I think maybe we could turn this
into a drift car.
Chicks dig drift cars.
There's just one problem.
Do either one of y'all
know how to drift?
Narrator: then richard looks
to raise some cash
By flipping a rare '67 corvette.
That's pretty amazing.
And he also finds a buyer
For the gas monkey shop truck.
But when they can't agree
on a price...
$25,000 Is out.
...they find a fast and loud way
to settle their differences.
[ Laughs ]
Narrator:
while back at the garage,
Scot and k.c. Go to battle
on the fairmont.
Felt like
it moved just enough.
[ Clattering ]
You ever notice
the monkey in here
Looks like
the missing link?
I'm not sure
what animal this is.
Really don't know,
but it tastes the same.
There's the donkey.
Well, it's all right by me.
[ Horn honks ]
Aaron.
Hey,
what's going on, bud?
I need a car fixed.
You know how to do it?
Well, I can read a book or two.
All right.
Fairmont, 1978.
Kaufman: in case you're not
familiar with the fairmont,
The fairmont is like if a
...that's pretty much
what a fairmont is.
It is the child's rendering
of a vehicle.
Wow.
What do you mean, "wow"?
[ Laughs ]
People don't know what it is.
They've asked me all the time,
"what is that?"
And I say, "it's a fairmont."
What the hell is that?
They tell me
it's a fairmont.
[ Laughing ]
god almighty, that's ugly.
Holy [bleep]
this thing is ugly.
I don't think even know
what it is.
He said
it's a ford fairmont.
I haven't seen one of those
since I was a little kid,
And I didn't like them
then.
I didn't even know
what a car was yet.
What'd he say?
He said it's ugly.
[ Laughs ] okay.
Oh, you don't think so?
No!
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
It's like this.
Have you ever seen one?
No!
Okay.
I don't think
they sold very well.
There's probably a reason.
[ Laughs ]
Well, I came here
to gas monkey today
Because it's been sitting
out in the weeds
For the last three years,
And it has developed some rust
in the gas tank.
I was gonna have them
clean it out
And get it running again.
I just want that gas tank
cleaned out,
Lines blown out,
carburetor rebuilt.
It's been sitting outside.
We have a couple of things
we have to go through.
Why don't we throw
it up on the rack,
take a look at it,
Make sure we don't have
any massive problems,
'Cause you could be way deeper
than this car's worth real fast.
You know, I'm all about
making a quick buck,
But I don't want anyone
spending money on a car
That's just not worth it.
Let's chuck it
on the rack.
So, we're gonna throw
this fairmont up on the rack
And see what we're working with.
Then we're gonna get this ugly
piece of crap out of my garage,
'Cause I got to keep
my street cred,
And this is ruining
my reputation.
Kaufman: so, we throw the car
up on the rack.
That's all right.
Even though this is
a '78 fairmont,
Underneath,
it looks just like a mustang.
That's because
this fairmont's chassis
Is what will become
the fox body mustang.
Well, it's like you're standing
under a hot rod mustang.
It really is.
It's like a mustang
on the bottom
And fairmont on top.
Yeah, the 8.8 slid back in there
without any problem.
Had a 7.5 in it.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
It's a 302 with tfs heads,
Edelbrock air-gap intake,
hedman headers,
With a 750 double pumper on it,
With an 8.8 rear end.
It's a fox body mustang
With just a real stupid body
on top of it.
So, it's odd enough now
it's growing on me,
And I'm like, "hey,
I can get in this thing.
"A little low budget,
have a little fun,
Do some burnouts."
I'm in.
Kaufman:
you know, I like mustangs.
I just don't want
to be seen in one.
And what's cool about this is
this a mustang,
But you're not seeing
a mustang.
That's one thing we're
a little short on right now --
Those little fun hot rods.
We've been building
all these cars
And been selling them
as fast as we can.
We don't have any toys
around the shop.
So, this was the perfect one,
or at least I'm thinking so.
You had this thing sitting out
for a long time.
You trying to get it ready
to sell or...
Uh...yes.
Well, today could be
your lucky day.
We can knock out two birds
with one stone.
Aaron, I was watching some
videos on that drift car [bleep]
I mean, I'll be
the first one to tell you
I don't know anything
about it, but...
I think maybe we could turn this
into a drift car.
Can we get some bigger tires
underneath it?
Yeah.
Answer's always yes.
We've never had a drift car
here at gas monkey garage.
I tell you what it is
for you out there,
Kiddos that don't know.
Aah-ow!
Rawlings: drifting --
that's a driving technique
Where the driver intentionally
oversteers the car,
Causing the loss of traction
in the rear wheels,
Enabling to skid the car
around the corner.
[ Tires screeching ]
You know, none of us
here at the garage
Are really sure exactly why
you drift other than it's fun,
Because it looks like the
slowest way around the track.
But we're into fun, so we're
willing to give it a shot.
[ Tires screech ]
So, if we just take it
like it is,
I'll give you
a free ride home.
How much cash you need?
Do you want to haggle,
or do you want bottom dollar?
I always like to haggle,
But if you give me
a bottom dollar,
You know I'm gonna cut it down
from there.
Well, I think $5,500.
It's worth that,
Because I've seen a lot
of mustangs go for that
With all of the running gear
and everything.
Did you see the body
on this thing?
It's like a brick.
That's the reason
that it's worth $5,500.
That would be a world's record
for a ford fairmont.
I knew that was a little high,
but then again, I know richard,
And richard has
a tendency to haggle,
And he loves to haggle.
I'm thinking like $2,500.
No, I'll let you guys
repair it
And I'll drive it off here
for that. No.
Huh.
What about $3,490?
Kaufman: what if we give you
a ride in it when we're done?
Gary, I count my money every day
when I put it in my pocket.
It keeps getting smaller.
I got 3,500 bucks
in my pocket right now.
So, that's what we did.
He came in and offered
What I thought was
a fair, reasonable offer
For the position
that the car's in now.
All right.
For $3,500?
$3,500.
It's a deal.
Kick a*s, aaron.
Looks like we got ourselves
a drift car.
I don't even need
to count it.
I count it every morning
before I put it in my pocket.
That's my walk-around money --
$3,500.
Thank you, richard.
Thank you, sir.
I think
this car's a great deal.
I think we can have
a lot of fun with it.
But that's the problem.
You start letting aaron have
fun, and there goes the cash.
It just --
whew! Whew! Whew!
He's gonna waste
two sets of tires
Before he even decides
if he likes the car.
Cash, like tire smoke
in the wind.
[ Blows ]
Rawlings:
so, we got our next big build.
It's an ugly 1978 ford fairmont.
But before we start
working on it,
I want to take it for a spin
and see how she handles.
Gary says she's fast and loud --
means it's my kind of car.
[ Engine revs, tires screech ]
The 1979 ford fairmont
was designed
To help americans through
tough economic times.
It featured a new lightweight
and simplified frame
Called the fox platform.
The fairmont offered
improved fuel efficiency
And saved drivers thousands
at the pump.
The fox platform
Would later become
the basic frame for the mustang,
The thunderbird,
and other ford cars,
And it helped make
the ford fairmont
The most successful
new car launch ever.
Rawlings: I feel like
I'm in my grandma's fairmont.
Kaufman: [ laughs ]
This thing is not fast
and it ain't cool,
And it ain't
fast and loud.
[ Engine stops ]
no.
Well,
I got nothing now.
What do you
want to do now?
Rawlings: yeah. What can I say?
So, we stalled out.
I had to get out and push a bit
to kick-start the motor
And get it back up
and running.
[ Engine sputtering ]
Got it running...
Almost.
Back to the shop.
A little push-start
never hurt anything.
Mathieu: well, I'm sitting
around the shop,
Waiting on richard and aaron
to show up with something to do.
Kind of like waiting
for a hot chick
To walk
into the doughnut store.
[ Engine revs ]
Rawlings:
look at that badness!
Except for it doesn't run.
[ Laughs ]
What the hell
was that?
Well, richard shows up
with this car,
And I was hoping we weren't
gonna work on this one.
It's pretty ugly.
Sounds good.
Too bad it's so damn ugly.
Rawlings: man,
you haven't even seen it yet
And you're
already bitching.
You just got
one good look.
You don't even understand
what this car's all about.
It's a fairmont.
Dude, it's a freaking badass
is what it is.
It's just running
a little rough right now.
Well, me and you
already checked it out.
Show k.c. What's under the hood,
though.
Rawlings:
there you go. See?
Mathieu: got some decent parts
on it, looks like.
Kaufman:
yeah. It sounds good.
Where'd you find
this one at?
Gary brought it down,
wanted us to blow the tank out.
The fuel lines
had just crud in them.
It had been sitting outside
for three years.
And we dug on it so much,
here it is.
So, what me and aaron
were talking about is
Maybe going
kind of drift-car style --
Flaring out the fenders,
Doing some big wheels,
big brakes.
Richard and aaron,
I guess, have talked about
this car before I saw it,
And they decided
they want do a drift car,
Which that's probably about all
The fairmont would be worth
to me, so...
The only question I got is,
Do either one of y'all
know how to drift?
I'll learn.
Well, I seen at the maga--
at the magazine store,
They've got a whole row
of drift magazines.
'Cause a drift car
just doesn't do donuts.
I wouldn't say the world
is full of drift cars.
I'd say that
we have plenty of room
To find our own home
here at gas monkey garage
With our very own
fairmont drift car.
I feel that it would be
a welcome addition to the pack.
Let me tell you why
I want to get into
the drift car scene anyways.
If you go to the convenience
store like he's talking about
And look at that whole row
of magazines,
There's some chicks
in those things.
Chicks dig drift cars.
I'm hoping it's not just chicks
that dig this car.
Drift cars
are speciality vehicles
That can sell for
really big bucks at auction.
But before I commit
this fairmont to auction,
I got to make sure it drives
and it can drift.
So we've got girls
And damn good way to blow out
tires and fuel, so...
So what are we gonna do?
Are we gonna tear it --
I don't know.
I've never built
a drift car.
I really don't have a clue how
drift cars are actually built.
This is just my vision of how
drift cars should be built.
I figure we basically need
just a couple of things.
First, big tires with good tread
for speed and stability.
Next, we need to change
the gears in the rear axle
To give the engine more
advantage over the car's weight.
Then we need to add a hand brake
to the console,
So that we can initiate
the drift
When we're going
around the corners.
A set of racing seats
And a roll cage to protect us
in case we crash.
So, let's be honest.
I don't have a clue
what we're doing,
But we're gonna have
a damn good time doing it.
Well here's the problem.
It's a cheap toy.
That's why I bought it.
So keep it cheap 'cause
you're probably gonna wreck it.
That's the man
you need to talk to.
I know.
He's gonna be --
they're gonna be
some expensive features.
"Let's do this.
Let's do that."
I'm gonna go from
a cheap-a*s freaking toy
We were supposed to
have some fun
To like a $50,000
freaking drift car
That just got smashed
into the wall
By some guy with a beard
that's on fire.
As long as it looks cool,
I'm in.
Aaron likes to make it rain
with your money.
[ Laughing ] yeah.
"Richard's --
I don't give a [bleep]"
Exactly.
Rawlings: so, check it out.
While I'm losing money
on the fairmont,
I got to get some cash flow
coming in the garage.
I got a good lead.
Could be a home run.
Guy just called, said he's got
a '67 corvette stingray
Just sitting in his garage.
I got to get over there
before anyone beats me,
'Cause if he's telling
the truth,
It could be
my biggest score yet.
Narrator:
coming up on "fast n' loud,"
Richard's tempted
by a '67 corvette...
If you get to $25,000,
you can put it on the trailer.
...while scot faces
a familiar foe.
Why they got to be rats?!
Rats!
Rawlings:
so, I'm going to check out
The '67 lyndale blue corvette.
You know what?
A lot of people might claim
to have one of these,
But I got to see the car
and see the paperwork.
For all I know, it could just be
another fairmont.
And I sure as hell
don't need one of those.
[ Sighs ]
How's it going?
Mark: pretty good.
You must be mark.
I am mark.
Well that looks like
a '67 'vette.
It is.
Very, very cool.
Rawlings: sure enough,
I walk up to this guy's garage,
And there she is, just
sitting there waiting for me --
A 1967 corvette.
Corvette guys think this is
the best corvette ever made.
And ironically, it wasn't even
supposed to exist.
A scheduling problem
in production
Caused the 1967 corvette
to be pushed to 1968,
Making the '67 the last year
of the stingray.
Confused yet?
Bottom line,
they kept it the same.
Added a few fins,
added some rocker panel trim,
Threw some wheels on it,
And for style, looks,
and performance,
You can't beat it.
How long you had it?
Uh, 15 years?
Yeah, I bought it from
my neighbor in pennsylvania.
He owned it
for 30 years before me.
No kidding.
Well, cool, man.
So, you believe
this to be original paint?
[ Laughs ]
that's as original as it gets.
What's left of it.
Absolutely.
Now, you told me
on the phone
You had the original
tank sticker.
Tank sticker
and protect-o-plate.
So, here's the deal.
There's a lot of fake
'67 corvettes out there,
So I asked mark what kind
of documentation he had.
He hands me a tank sticker.
That's the sticker
they put on the tank
When it's rolling
down the assembly line
And proof positive
of what this car is.
Langhorne, pennsylvania.
And there's
the protect-o-plate.
Then he pulls out
the protect-o-plate.
Double whammy.
I got a real corvette.
Now all I got to do is
get it bought
'Cause I think it's worth
around 40 grand.
I mean, you said you were
thinking around 35 grand or so
On the phone...
Um, how about $22,500?
How about $30,000?
Well, I saved myself
So we're moving
in the right direction.
Um...
Everything looks good.
I trust
the paperwork on it,
And I like the car,
and it's the right color.
I still really want to be
at $22,500.
I mean...$24,000?
Get you there?
I mean, I'm here, truck's there.
Got a trailer.
Got everything.
I mean...
If you, uh...
If you can get to $25,000,
you can put it on the trailer.
I like it. I own it.
Cool. Thank you, man.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
It's going
to a good home.
I think it's a fair number.
Why didn't I bring
any of my other guys?
Rawlings: I'm absolutely
freaking out about this car.
I got a good buyer
in mind for it.
But I want to get it
back to the shop
And show the guys what I found.
It's been a pretty hardworking
day for old richard.
Mcmillan: so, I'm starting
to work on the '78 fairmont.
When the guys bought this thing,
The owner said the gas tank
needed cleaned
And the fuel lines
were probably dirty.
Aaron took it for a test drive.
He decided it was really dirty.
So we're gonna go ahead
and replace the fuel regulator,
Blow out the lines completely.
And as usual,
I get to work on the rear end.
Well, this car's
in pretty good shape.
Looks like we're not gonna
have to fix any rust.
Still some rat turds.
Always rat turds.
Why do cars
got to have rat turds?
There's always rat turds
in these cars.
Every car they find, rat turds.
That should say something.
They need to find
some better cars.
No rat turds.
If they find a car
with no rat turd,
I don't care what it is,
need to buy that car.
[Bleep] rats, rats.
Always rats.
Why there got to be rats?!
Rats!
[ Horn honks ]
That's a good one.
Rawlings:
you heard the saying,
"The sun shines on a dog's a*s
every once in a while"?
The sun was shining
on this dog's a*s today.
Original paint. '67.
Corvette.
Mcmillan: nah.
This is the ticket.
Here's what's real the kicker
with this car.
If you go back through
all the auction figures,
Like, since they've been keeping
track of auction figures,
There have been more
'67 427/435 horses sold
Than they ever built.
[ Laughter ]
nice.
So there's so many cars
out there that are b.s.,
That aren't true,
that aren't really --
They started out
as small block cars.
This is the real deal.
Let's get it
off the trailer
So we can tinker with it
for a little while.
I'm down with that.
Rawlings: so while the guys get
the 'vette off the raptor,
I'm gonna go check in
with christy,
My office chick.
I hope she's in a good mood,
but I don't really care.
Christy:
gas monkey garage.
Sure. May I tell him
who's calling?
Okay, hold on.
Hey, richard?
Rawlings: yeah?
It's a british guy on the phone,
wants to talk to you.
This is richard.
Yo, chris. What's up?
How's it over there
on that side of the pond?
You know what we have over here
that you don't?
Money, freedom,
all kinds of stuff like that.
So I got a call from chris,
my friend in the u.k.
I've sold him a bunch of cars
over the years.
But today takes the cake.
He wants to buy my shop truck
Just to drive
his racecars around.
Oh, my little f-100?
That thing's badass, dude.
It's got like
a little 5-liter in it.
We put
the crown vic front end
Kind of like we did
that green truck.
It's got a nine-inch
locker rear end.
It's got
four-wheel disc brakes.
It's pretty dadgum cool.
No, I don't want to sell it.
Well, I might sell it.
But you're serious?
If you're super serious,
I'll tell you what.
The motor's a little old
and it's a little weak.
We didn't really care
'cause we were just building it
To bounce around here
in the shop.
I'll put a motor in it,
freshen it up.
But it's gonna be
I mean,
it's gonna be a lot.
I'm not switching
the steering wheel, though.
You idiots don't know what side
of the road to drive on.
Don't give me that crap
About y'all invented
the english language, either.
'Cause we perfected it
over here in texas.
As a matter of fact,
Everybody that was smart
on your side of the world
Came over here
and started ours.
All right, cool.
I'll see you when you get here.
Come on. I ain't scared.
Bye.
Rawlings: check it out.
I think
I got the shop truck sold.
Phipps: really?
Yeah, but I told him that
I'd put a new motor in it.
You think you can drop
a long block in it
In like 48 hours or so?
Yeah. Everything's there,
just swap over?
Yeah.
Don't have to wait
on the core or anything.
Yeah, sure.
I can do that.
All right, cool.
I'm gonna run over
and get a block.
Go ahead and pull it around
and yank it out.
Okay.
All right, brother.
Thanks.
Rawlings: this is the kind
of days I like at gas monkey.
Everybody's just jamming.
Everybody's got a job to do,
and they're doing it well.
Got phipps putting the motor
in the '68 ford truck.
I promised chris I'd do that.
So phipps is up front,
dropping the new long block in.
That truck will be
back on the ground,
Running and driving
in just a few hours.
Kaufman: so, we've got
the interior of the '78 fairmont
All stripped down.
I've got the guys pulling
the old rear axle
So that I can install
the new wider rear axle
And put the new gears
in the differential.
You got
all the fluid out of it?
Yep.
Okay.
The reason
we're gonna change the gears is
We'd like to make
more horsepower,
But that costs a lot of money.
So we're gonna cheat it
and use gears.
So, we're gonna take out
the 373s that are in this,
Which motivated the car well
being a drag car.
But we're gonna put 410s
in the wider rear end.
It's kind of like
switching gears on a bicycle.
It's a tedious process,
but when we're done,
We're gonna have
the power we need
To make this car fast
on the track.
Since I'm working on that,
I'm gonna have k.c. Start
on the brakes.
We're gonna pull off
the spindles
And everything
off the front of it
And switch to like
a '95 mustang style,
Which will allow us
to go to 5 lug
And upgrade them a little bit.
Give it a little bit bigger
brake for stopping.
Rawlings: hey, aaron.
What's up?
These are the guys from skinz
that are gonna wrap this thing
When you get done
building.
These are the guys
that are making the condoms?
[ Laughter ]
No, they're not making condoms.
They're making car wraps.
Oh, okay.
How do we want
the ford fairmont to look?
Aaron and I have no clue.
It's just so damn ugly.
It's hard
to come up with an idea,
But I think I got a solution.
We're gonna cover this thing
in a wrap.
You've seen it
on vans and buses.
I can't get rid of the car
being ugly,
But I damn sure can hide it.
Well, tell us a little bit
about the design --
What we're gonna be
trying to make.
Kaufman: well, as you see,
it's a fairmont.
And so most of the time,
they're just ugly in general.
So what I want to do is
try to make the car
look a lot faster
And kind of remove some of these
really, really blocky lines.
And so,
we're thinking about
A really organic
kind of pattern,
Like a digital landscape
type of thing.
So there's kind of like
this section,
And it kind of
bleeds through
Out to another section
going this way.
Predominant colors I want to be
like white, gray, and black.
Aaron's got some great ideas
for the design of the fairmont.
And the guys from skinz,
they're top notch.
I just hope
they can keep up the pace
And give us something
that we're happy with.
All right, cool. So,
we're hoping to get it to you
Just in a few days,
And you'll have it
for 24 hours.
We'll come pick it back up
and go out and raise hell.
Probably smash it
into a wall
And totally destroy
all of your hard work.
[ Laughs ]
Narrator: coming up...
Well I'm at $25,000.
How about we just flip a coin
for it?
The gas monkey truck
goes up on the block...
I ain't flipping a coin
for 5 g's.
...and richard takes a gamble.
Rawlings:
eat your 5 grand, chris.
You're going down.
So, I know you like corvettes,
and I just picked this one up
But I don't know
just a ton about them.
But this one's supposed to be
pretty special.
Rawlings: so, I bought
this '67 corvette for 25 grand
And got it back to the shop,
tuned it up.
It's running, driving.
It's a full vehicle
ready for sale.
So I thought
I'd call my friend dennis.
He always loves these muscle
cars, and I love his cash.
So it's a '67 427/435 horse,
It's lyndale blue,
original paint, whole car.
Never been wrecked,
never been anything.
And like you always tell me,
get the build sheet.
This guy's got
the build sheet.
So the tank sticker's
here?
Tank sticker's here.
When I walked in, I was --
I was blown away, actually.
That's an l71.
That is gonna be the second
to the biggest horsepower car.
That's pretty amazing.
The car's better
than you said it was.
Cool.
Now I'm at $45,000.
Yeah, I knew
you were going there.
That's where honesty
will get you.
Well...
What's the real number?
I mean I don't want to sit here
and beat you up on it.
I'll just cut to it, man.
If I said $40,000,
You would have gone
a little lower, so...
I'll leave some on it.
That's it.
I would have paid
the $40,000.
[Bleep]
[ Laughs ]
Not only would I have paid
the $40,000,
I would have paid the $45,000
in a heartbeat.
There's no corvette guy in
the planet that wouldn't have.
The '67 is the car to have.
Period.
I take a lot of your money
and then I go spend a little.
[ Laughs ]
and spread it around.
Dude, this is a good find.
I'm glad you, you know --
I don't know how you found it,
but, I mean, you got your ways.
This was a good find.
You did well.
I'm pretty happy with it.
I'm proud of you.
Original paint car.
It's great.
It's a holy-grail car.
I don't know
what he paid for it,
But it was a fair deal.
Actually more than fair.
He gave me the car.
[ Tires screech ]
Kaufman: things have been crazy
here at the shop,
So I haven't had a lot of time
To get everything finished
all at the same time.
I got the rear end in,
and then I stopped.
I didn't get a chance
to start on the gears.
Then I started on the gears...
...and then stopped.
So today, finally, I was able
to get the new axle in, done.
Oh, we got the diff cover on.
So I'm going to give that
a second to set up.
We'll come back.
We'll torque it,
put some oil in it.
Got the brakes in.
These are pretty impressive.
Bolt right on, no shims,
Everything looks like
it's 100% rock 'n' roll.
Got everything on,
Even got the back wheels
bolted on.
This will be cooler,
and we'll fit it all.
So what do you think?
First impression?
Looks fine.
Looks like it's supposed to.
Next up on the fairmont,
We're gonna make our marks,
get the sawzall out,
Cut the sheet metal
off the side of the car,
Start making plans
for flaring the fenders.
The first thing we have to do is
get the old paint off.
The reason we're taking
the paint off is
Once I make the cut,
it'll be incredibly difficult
To strip the paint
off of the loose sheet metal.
So if we do it now, I can make
a cut and then weld right to it.
Once the panel's stripped,
then I can make my cuts
Down the length
of the quarter panel.
So, now that we've got the rear
quarter panel actually cut,
Not removed from the car --
It's still attached
at both ends --
What I'm going to do is
actually go back
And I left a section
of the inner fender intact.
We'll actually go across that,
Stitch that back together
on the bottoms.
We'll have to fabricate
a new upper inner fender,
And then we can go ahead
and fill these gaps right here.
Rawlings:
I'm digging the wheels.
Did these come in
late last night?
Kaufman: yesterday.
Do we really have to
clear out that much?
I'm only gonna bring them out
an inch, inch and a half or so.
I mean, it's not much.
This will work a little better
than the "f."
Rawlings: I'm thinking
that we put this on there.
This car's gonna be evil
and fast and loud.
Everything's a little better
with a little skull.
Interior's over at sue's,
I guess,
Getting glued down
and headliner?
Or just the headliner?
Just the headliner and just rear
interior rear quarter panels,
So that's about it.
I'll check back in
with you later.
I'm gonna go drink beer.
Yeah.
Rawlings: I know aaron's working
really hard on the fairmont,
And I have total faith
in his abilities.
But before I can sell this car
at auction,
I got to know if it can drift.
So, I booked some time
at the racetrack
With a friend of mine
that's a drift car driver,
And he's gonna take it
for a test run.
If aaron can't pull this off,
Then we ditch the plans
to take it to the auction
And burn it to the ground.
Flairing fenders --
If it was easy,
everyone would do it.
It's not.
And they're not gonna
do themselves,
So me and scot are gonna be
working late again tonight.
So, we just got the exterior
of this fender finished.
We got an inner fender to build.
And about a halfway done
with the other one.
[ Fan belt squealing ]
Rawlings: so my friend chris is
coming in from london tomorrow
To buy the ford f-100
shop truck.
So I'm gonna go in
and check with phipps,
Cause he just replaced
the engine for me.
Phipps,
this doesn't look so right.
Ow!
Oh man! Don't sneak up
on me like that.
Well, hell, you had your a*s
in the air.
What was I supposed to do?
Just checking it out.
No leaks.
I think we're set to go,
richard.
Cool.
'Cause we are out of time.
Chris is coming back
to pick it up
And take it away
to london.
Well, man, I'm glad
you got it done in time,
'Cause I told him I'd get it
done and get it for him.
Take it for a test drive, man.
Make sure it does burnouts.
I'll do it.
All right, later.
Kaufman:
what do you think?
Rawlings: I don't know
'cause I just don't know.
The guys from skinz sent over
their design for the fairmont,
And I'm just not digging it.
It's too busy,
and it ain't gas monkey style.
On top of that,
it doesn't really show you
The only thing that's cool
about this car.
It's just a big, stupid brick.
All right.
So we're starting over.
What do you want to
wrap the car as?
Total mirror chrome.
So, we're kind of leaning
towards that.
Black --
just total chrome car.
Everything else
is flat black.
Leave the grille
flat black,
The panel right there flat black
with the wipers,
And chrome the car.
These guys
aren't digging my style.
But anything I can see
my face in has got to look good.
Cool. Well, that's it.
Get after it, guys.
So, my pal chris
is coming in from the u.k.
To check out the gas monkey
shop truck he wants to buy.
We put a new motor in it,
tuned her up a bit.
Now we just got to put
a little goodbye sticker on her
And send her on her way.
Hey, rich.
How's it going?
What the hell's going on,
dudes?
Good to see you, man.
Mike,
how you been doing?
Good, richard.
Man, long time no see.
So, what do you think?
Truck looks badass, man.
It's badass. It's fast.
It's cool.
It's just a beater.
[ Engine turns over ]
You know, I hate to admit it.
I'm gonna miss
my old shop truck.
I know it's just a simple f-100,
But we put a lot of work into it
over the years.
New suspension, new motor,
new transmission, new brakes,
And she's never let us down.
Always faithful --
Getting parts,
bringing stuff back.
Now I hate to see her go.
But she won't be going anywhere
If chris doesn't pay
my asking price.
Hey, so check it out.
Yeah, I'm wanting 25 grand.
Man, I --
$25,000 is out.
Okay, look.
Here's the gig.
I'm in at $20,000. Cash.
Well, I'm at $25,000.
How about we just flip
a coin for it?
Flip a coin.
Then we can go have
some beers,
Do some burnouts,
what have you.
Man, you guys are crazy
in this neck of the woods.
I ain't -- I ain't --
it's texas.
I ain't flipping a coin
for 5 g's.
Why don't you race
for it?
This is texas, right?
You got tracks everywhere.
Why don't you race
for it, man?
What are we gonna race?
Whatever you want.
You want to race the truck?
You want to race a car?
I'm thinking
if we're gonna race for it,
We might as well
as do it in style.
So, I ring lg motorsports.
They kindly lent us
their zr-1 race corvette,
Which is
an incredibly fast car.
You're literally looking at
It is unbelievable.
[ Chuckling ] wow.
Look at that.
Oh, there he is. You ready
to do some racing, mate?
And all I wanted to do was
just scare richard,
Because I didn't think
he could drive it.
You got anything
maybe a little faster?
[ Laughter ]
All right.
Let's make ourselves some money.
Fastest one
around the track wins.
Lg motorsports is clocking us,
and they'll tabulate the times.
And in the end, they'll tell us
who's the badass.
[ Laughs ]
Eat your 5 grand, chris.
You're going down.
I'm not happy about this.
Narrator: coming up...
Scot and k.c.
Battle the fairmont.
[ Both grunting ]
Now we got to make that do that
on the other side.
Come on, hard a*s.
Come on!
[ Laughs ]
So I'm here at motorsport ranch,
racing my good friend chris
For 5 grand plus or minus
on the sale of the shop truck.
And right now,
I'm burning up the track.
[ Laughs ]
He's really ripping it.
Richard is doing really good.
Rawlings: [ laughs ]
That's 5 grand
I just made, fool.
I'm a little bit concerned
at this point in time.
You know, I can hear him
going around and he is on it.
Rawlings: whoo!
Well? Did you see that spot
out there?
I was going like 180 and
all the flames were coming off,
And I had one arm out
and I was like this?
That's called
a texas drive-by.
[ Laughs ]
it don't matter, dude.
It's yours to lose now.
You did good.
Okay, I'm in.
I don't want to pay him
this 5 grand.
He wants the 5 g's.
I can tell
he's just done the job.
This is gonna be brutal.
I'm in for 5 grand, brother!
You're going down.
I'm in it for 5 g's, rich.
Look at that.
Rawlings: wow! Chris was
really flying out there.
I think this is gonna be close.
Whatever happened,
I gave it my best shot.
If you beat me fair and square,
you did, but...
I don't know yet.
What's the time?
We'll see.
Chris,
you went a 1:28:06.
Okay.
Richard, 1:31
You just saved yourself
Over a second's work.
Come on, man.
Man, that's a hell of way
to make 5 g's.
Let's do it again.
Let's get your prize
off the truck.
Thanks, man.
Smith: I've known richard
a long time now.
We had a lot of fun here today
with this car.
So, at the end of the day,
we're all winners.
I got a kick-a*s truck.
I'm happy. He's happy.
Everyone's a winner.
Rawlings:
we're all winners? Really?
I paid 250 bucks for that truck,
chris. See ya!
Right now, what I'm doing is
measuring for the roll cage.
Our fairmont, we're turning it
into a drift car.
The car's gonna be
drifting sideways.
Well, in the event that
you actually hit something --
A curb or a hole in the road
or something --
It can grab the edge
of that tire,
And the car'll just roll over.
If you make it off
the edge of the road,
It's gonna roll over real fast,
As soon as it gets
in the grass or dirt.
So, we really got to have this
roll cage in here just in case.
Are you ready?
This is how it's done.
[ Grunting ]
[ Metal clicks ]
That doesn't do anything.
[ Laughs ]
[ Both grunting ]
All right, that's good.
All right.
Okay, now we got to make that
do that on the other side.
Come on, hard a*s.
Come on!
Is it union breaktime yet?
Now I got to measure it.
It might be
a little tall.
Looks like it needs to come in
just a little bit.
Just a little bit.
Here, I'll hold the top.
Think you can pull it?
All right, go.
It felt like
it moved just enough.
Wow, look at this.
[ Exhales sharply ]
Think you might have moved --
you might have bent it too much.
Push it back out.
[ Laughs ]
Did you just
[bleep] yourself?
[ Farts ]
ohh!
You had to have
[bleep] yourself.
Yeah.
Bust a blood vessel in your eye,
looks like.
All right, you hold that.
Perfect.
I'm taking a break.
[ Clattering ]
Ha! It works.
Rawlings: so, the guys have
finished up the final details
On the '78 ford fairmont.
They got the roll cage in,
the hand brake in,
And the new racing seats
installed.
That's good enough, k.c.
Look at that.
And now me and aaron
are taking it down to skinz
For a big chrome finish.
Next time you see this car,
You won't even be able
to look at it.
Rawlings: a guy named gary
rolled into our shop,
Wanted us to check out
his old fairmont.
It had
some cool components,
But it'd been sitting around
for too long out in a field.
It had bad gas
and wasn't running right.
Kaufman: he's about to spend
some money on it,
So we explained to him
the error of his ways,
And he sold us the car.
Then I turned to aaron.
I'm like, "what exactly
Are we gonna do
with a ford fairmont?"
It was simple.
It really was.
Ditch the old seats.
Add new ones.
Add a hand brake.
Add bigger rear brakes.
Lower the gears in it.
Flare the fenders.
Put bigger wheels on it.
And every time he just touched
his finger cost me money.
A vehicle like this
Performing wacky maneuvers
it's gonna perform,
There's a high potential
for rollover.
So, we added
a roll bar in it.
And there's
a reasonable expectation
That I will live
through the day.
If we're gonna be in
a pissed-off little fairmont
Doing circles
and skidding around corners,
We got to make a spectacle
of ourselves.
What better way to do it
than to chrome the whole car?
We didn't actually dip this car
in a chrome tank.
What we did do is
call our friends at skinz,
And they've developed a new
material that's pretty awesome.
It looks
exactly like chrome.
It's also
a heat barrier.
I can touch this car
out in the sun,
It's probably 40 degrees cooler
than the car right next to it.
It's an awesome piece
of machinery,
It's now covered
in chrome,
And we're gonna have a little
fun out on the track with it.
Narrator: coming up...
Want to take a ride?
Rawlings:
I'll go for a ride.
Awesome.
Let's do it.
I'm super down.
[ Laughs ]
...richard and aaron drift away.
Oh, even better.
Piece of [bleep]
Even better.
Oh, man. [Bleep]
[ Laughs ]
[ Grunts ]
It won't come off!
Oh!
Sometimes you just need
the right tools for the job.
[ Both laugh ]
Rawlings: everything's on line
for the ford fairmont today.
I want to sell this thing
as a drift car,
But if it turns out
to be a bust,
It's just gonna sit around
the garage like a shiny tin can.
That'll be fun for the guys,
but not for my wallet.
So before I pull the trigger
on this auction,
I got to see how it performs.
You know, I'm not so sure
you can drift this drift car.
I'm not even sure if you know
how to build a drift car.
You know what? If your driving
is any indication,
I may not be able to.
You got
a solid point there.
That's why I brought
my friend brett in
To show us
what this car will do.
Hey, gentlemen.
How you doing?
Aaron. Richard.
Are you gonna show me
and him
That this is
an actual real drift car
And it can do
what it's supposed to do?
I'm a little nervous.
I'm afraid I failed.
Kaufman:
hey, it's my first drift car.
I don't know
if it's gonna drift or crash.
That's the reason I'm gonna let
richard ride first.
[ Engine turns over ]
[ Tires screeching ]
[ Laughs ]
Oh!
Kaufman: the car looked like
it was handling great.
There was no way I was gonna let
richard have all the fun.
Oh, I want to go fast now!
I want to fast!
I want to go!
So, I jumped on the track
and went for a ride.
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
[ Tires screeching ]
[ Laughs ] whoo!
This car was amazing!
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
I've never built
a dr*fter before,
But this thing handled
the corner like a champ.
I'm pretty impressed
if I do say so myself.
Ow! Get it!
Check it out.
Aaron pulled it off.
I wasn't sure
if we could build a drift car,
But we came through
in true gas monkey fashion.
And even though I got a pretty
penny in this vehicle...
...i'm gonna take it to auction
and hope it pays off in spades
'Cause this shiny brick's
worth some cash.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
Rawlings: today we're at
the mecum sale in dallas, texas,
Which is cool 'cause I didn't
have to drive far to get here.
We're here to sell
the drift car.
It's here. It's shiny.
It's chrome.
It's fast.
It's good-looking.
[ Laughs ]
Looks ridiculous in here
under the light, man.
Nah, it's not good-looking.
But anyways, it's here.
It's shiny.
Yeah, it is shiny.
You know what?
Kaufman: what?
Makes a damn good mirror.
Well, are you ready
to sell it?
I'm a little worried.
Crowds are looking
a little thin.
I'm not hearing
a whole bunch of...
Man: sold!
Well,
there goes a "sold."
Finally.
I'm gonna roll it
across the block,
Try to make
a couple of dollars.
And if I can
even break out
And get some of my money
back, that's fine.
If it just falls down
on its face,
We'll take it
back to the shop.
I'll use it to get beer.
Has no one ever been
by the shop?
There's a lot of things
there that were never
bought to make money.
Aaron!
Oh, there you are.
Get in the car, man.
We're fixing
to go make some money.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
Rawlings: hey, mister.
Can I get my bearded wonder
to drive the car across?
Yeah.
All right, cool.
So, I put this car
in the auction today.
Got a $15,000 reserve on it.
I'm not sure
if it's gonna get there.
It's late in the day.
Everybody's tired.
The ones that aren't tired
are drunk.
Those are the guys I want.
I have almost $18,000
into this car.
I'm hoping to get
at least 20 grand.
They want you to fire it up
and drive it up.
Okay.
We're gonna
fire this thing up.
We're gonna rev it up.
Have a little fun
with the crowd.
See who's here
and see who's in the mood
For a big, shiny brick.
Yeah, we might want
to put that back down.
[ Laughter ]
Man:
car number 257.1.
Number 257.1 is a 1978
ford fairmont drift car.
This car was built
by gas monkey garage
Right here in dallas, texas.
Gas monkey.
Auctioneer: $25,00 bid.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
$20,000 Bid?
What do you think?
$20,000.
[ Calling ]
$15,000.
$15,000.
[ Calling continues ]
Rawlings: there just wasn't
any buyers here for the cars
Or cars period.
There's no one out there.
There's people running around
in their motor scooter.
And they got like 17 orders
of fries and some pizza.
And they're just having
a good time looking at cars.
They're not here to buy.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
$7,500.
Haven't bought the parts
on the car yet.
Not yet. $7,500.
Looks like
something rocky would drive.
$7,500.
Rawlings:
here's what's happening.
We're taking that car home.
Aaron don't drink too much,
So I'm gonna make him drive
and I'm gonna go get some beer.
So, we just got our a*s
handed to us.
Yet again.
No bidders.
No money.
They don't like the shiny car,
whatever the drifty thing it is.
And we're taking it home.
That's pretty much exactly
what's happening.
You know, I don't know,
like you said,
There's no one out here
that's buying any cars.
Most of them
aren't selling at all.
So I don't think
that this is a drift car
Or a chrome car issue.
I think this is a --
There's no buyers
in the room tonight.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
So, I mean, I'm not a big fan
of auctions,
And this is why.
Made complete fools
of ourselves.
I know.
Did you see that?
There was nobody interested.
Hey, why are you talking
in my [bleep] interview, man?
No, I'm just kidding.
[ Laughs ]
Well, aaron,
looks like we got ourselves
A new shop, drift car/truck
thing.
Narrator: richard bought
a rare '67 corvette stingray
For $25,000.
After a quick tune-up,
he flipped it for $35k.
I would have paid
the $40,000. [ Laughs ]
Richard decided to part ways
with the shop truck.
After replacing the engine
and giving it a gas monkey kiss,
Two seconds cost him $5,000.
He sold it for 20 grand.
What the hell is that?
Richard then bought
a 1978 ford fairmont
For $3,500.
He added
bigger wheels and tires,
Installed race seats,
roll bar, and flared fenders,
And chromed it into the biggest
mirror he'd ever owned,
All for $17,800.
They thought they had a winner,
But richard's chrome brick
sunk like a stone at auction.
But they still came out on top
with $9,350 for the week.
Yo, yvette, there's a lot
of rumors going around.
They're so bad, baby,
you might have to skip town.
We've been so busy at the shop
lately, I really --
I needed some way to decompress.
I just got caught up
in all the work.
I really got wrapped up in
everything I've been working on.
Something smelling fishy,
and they say it's you.
Don't stand anywhere
in this general area.
Whuppah!
