The firebirds shared the same

Richard: We simultaneously
built both cars, side-by-side,
all the way up, 100-point
concourse restorations.
Jason:
Richard makes it sound easy,
but those restorations
were brutal.
The rust repair
plus getting them straight
and getting them all-original,
was grueling work.
In the end, gas monkey got paid,
and that's what counts.

but kept it real period-correct.
He had a few cars that I've had

cool old hot rods,
but they were fiberglass,
and I'm just not keen on those.
Here's what

'79 celica.
I mean, look real close.
That's original paint.
You ain't going to find a car
in this condition
in the country
like this.

richard: The supra was toyota's
move to siphon off sales
from datsun's 280z
and mazda's rx-7.
Created in japan in 1978
as the celica xx,
it was exported
to the u.S. Market in 1979
and re-branded the supra.
It's still a celica,
but with enough upgrades
and luxury accessories to make
it toyota's upmarket special.
And not only is it
a first-year toyota supra,
but the import scene
is real hot right now,
and most of those cars
got trashed,
beat up, and to find one
in decent condition
is going to be
hard to do.
Original paint,
two-owner car.

It's a good-looking car.
First glance, it's got some
hail dents and things like that,
you know, we can get a dent guy
to take care of that.

was when we got the car
in position
to tear it down,
the passenger door
wouldn't open.

and all of a sudden,

The trunk pan is not and there's

And sure enough, as we got
the car further apart,
we started finding signs.
I can already tell you
it looks like
there's been floor pan put in.
And it's a convertible,
so if they don't do it right.
That's factory, though.
All this is factory.
Yeah, but this isn't.

And when we pulled
the carpet back,
we found the entire floor
of the car had been cut out
and really poorly
welded back on top of it.
They didn't it correctly,
that body could taco.
Being a convertible like that,
you don't have roof structure,
so really, all of it
relies on your floor.
And if they just
threw these pans in
and over time, that car had --
had sagged like this,
could be an issue
why we're having a problem
with our doors fitting.
We can't make a door
fit in a hole that's an inch
too short, front to back.
Let's roll it to the lift.
This puts a huge red flag
for us right now,
because if we go
to all this work
and we still can't make
all those pieces fit
without having to cut
the car apart,
then it's a wasted project.

It's all gone. I mean, the whole
floor has come out of it.

what we've got,

getting into with this car,

There's just no car left.
The rail connectors are the only
thing holding the car together.

of the car

it was so rotted out

starting to fold like this
because the structure is gone.

I have no idea
how to take this apart.
Now we have a parts car,
and we have a buildable car,
and that's the ideal situation
to build what we want.
We're going to blow
this thing apart.
We're going to take
every piece off of it,
we're going to get it
to the sandblaster
and get down to the metal and
look at what we've got to do.
Josh: I think some things
will be revealed
once it's sandblasted
and we get it back.
Otherwise, it looks pretty
clean underneath there.
It's definitely way cleaner
than our other one.

jason: The early firebirds
had these dampeners.
It was a 25-pound weight
in there with a spring.
Engineers installed them
in there as a quick fix
to cut down on the vibrations
on convertibles.
I feel like this is a--
when they've made a mistake.
We will definitely delete those.
-Shake weight?
Yeah, it's a shake weight.
-That's exactly what it was.
-Anti-vibration.
Josh:
I feel like when the engineers
were working on these things,
they're like,
"oh, we messed up,"
and then they had to put these
in to give it a smoother ride.
We're going to get
a major weight reduction
just taking those off the car.
Dude, and a workout.
These are heavy
little suckers.

somebody's already
gone through it.
It's a recent resto.
Well, what's cool about it too
is we can actually spend time
doing the fun stuff,
making it custom,
making it cool,
instead of restoring it.

cut the exhaust,
and drop the subframe.

than what we could have dealt

with a coat of clear,

That car means a lot to me.
It was the second hellcat

and it's worth well

we all jumped in the trucks,
mater hooked up the trailer,
and we're off to scoop it up,
if it's really mine.

it's completely intact.

As we're getting the paint
stripped off,
it's kind of revealing what
actual shape the thing is in.
I haven't seen
a lot of rust yet,
but there's definitely
a lot of body damage.
I'm glad we're doing this
so that the sandblasters
don't cause more damage,
'cause they would
have to sit on it
with their blaster
to get this stuff off.

to get the subframe apart,
get the old motor
and transmission out
and get them on a crate,
get them out of the way.
Get that blasted
and powder-coated,
ready to put the new
power plant in the car.

When we pulled the subframe out
and got the motor out,
we were able to see that
there were some rust holes
on all of the mounting points.
The two in the front were good
'cause they're only
the core support,
but the ones underneath the body
got the holes real big.
So we ended up
getting the body
that was sagging
on the subframe.
Chad got us these plates.
Jeremy and I were able to cut
them and put them in place.
-I expected heavier.
-I would think the same.
Okay. We want stuff for
blasting, this would be awesome.

That's vintage.
You used to be able to buy those
at advanced auto parts
when -- when I was young.
Look, this car's so slick,

off to the sandblaster.
Mike: Hell yeah.

tony: I don't think we're
going anytime soon.
Doesn't look like it.
[bleep] it's raining.
[ indistinct talking ]
jason: The biggest adversary
of our sandblaster is rain.
It won't allow them
to actually sandblast,
because of the moisture
in the air.
Everything's at a halt now.
So all that time we made up
in the last day and a half,
now we got to sit and wait.
Mike: The problem is
what's called flash rust.
Raw, bare metal can corrode
with just high humidity.
So to avoid it
when it's raining out,
our blaster,
well, he just shuts down.
[ imitates
thunder crashing ]
did you hear it?
-I heard your thunder.
Mike: But no worries.
This storm will blow over,
and it'll be sunny tomorrow.
I can feel it in my bones.
[ thunder crashes ]
okay, I'm a better painter
than I am a weatherman.
We've got to wait
for the rain to stop
before we can take the firebird
body over to sandblast.
So in the meantime,
me and the boys will go ahead
and get the doors and the other
panels ready for metalwork.
Jason: Okay, hold on.
We're taking it alright?
Every panel has
something small.
-Let's take them all.
-But it's all small stuff.
Mike: Since we've been stuck
in this weather delay,
we've managed to strip down
all the panels to bare metal.
So now we just need
a little bit of metal work.
No emblem holes and then, like,
here's a little bit of rust,
just in the normal spots.
-Mm-hmm.
-Thank you, guys.
-You're welcome.
Jeremy: You know, the damage
isn't too bad on these.
It's always typical, if there's
a brace right here, water,
dirt clogs up in there,
rots out the corners.
So cut it out, clean the rust,
treated the brace to make sure
it wouldn't keep rusting.
Sealed it all with some primer,
and that way,
they have something good
to do their bondo over,
and if you leave all the rust
and all the holes
it's just going to blister
back through your bodywork.
So patched it up for mike
and the boys over there.
Make sure that their bodywork
is going to hold up
and then shaved
all the emblem holes out
and this fender
will be ready to go back.
Guess what?
We got a window of sunshine.
We need to get
this thing loaded.
It might be a brief one,
so we're going to try to
get over as quickly as possible.
We're days behind
on the firebird build,
and richard was not happy
when I told him
I can't control the weather.
We ran into a lot
of weather problems
this last week in dallas,
that put our firebird
way behind.
This looks so sketchy.
Richard: As far as I know,
I built the garage,
and I put a roof on it,
and jason's telling me
there's a weather delay.
I mean, this isn't baseball.
Jason: Rain's coming.
We got to hurry.
Richard:
Between the two firebirds
and enough parts to build
both of them,
I'm at least $35,000
into this project
with nothing to show for it.
Okay, guys,
