[music continues]

With your permission, General Romero

Lieutenant Romero reporting.

Oh, I think we can dispense with the formalities, Miguel.

You are not yet in uniform.

And we have a certain relationship.

Yes, grandfather.

Well, as you see, we're ready.

Any further instructions?

Be careful, be quick and remember

you are leading a preliminary scouting expedition.

- Not an invasion. - Yes, sir.

Well, then, uh..

[speaking in foreign language]

Until the invasion, general.

We'll be there to welcome you.

Darien point.

One week from tonight.

The overthrow of Dictator Vega.

Go with God.

[instrumental music]

[birds chirping]

[g*nshots]

[male narrator] "The FBI."

A QM Production.

Also starring Philip Abbott..

With guest stars

Marisa Pavan..

...Carlos Montalban..

...Lin McCarthy.

Tonight's episode

"The Exiles."

[theme music]

My point is, it's more than a neutrality act violation

we're dealing with, it's human life.

How many exiles survived

the landing of Balagua last night, Art?

According to Intelligent sources, not one.

But that doesn't fey as Romero.

Rumor has it, he's planning

a full scale landing operation sometime next week.

Now, apart from the fact that he's breaking the law, Lewis

he'll be leading hundreds of men into a meat grinder.

What's he got, a spy in his camp?

He probably has, yes.

Miami already has a report

there's an unknown Vega espionage agent in the area.

Which may explain why the exiles

were betrayed on their first raid.

What kind of guy is this Romero, Mr. Ward?

I mean, if Vega's got him tapped

why does he keep butting his head against a brick wall?

One, he may not know it

and two, he may not believe it even if you told him.

A leader as dedicated as that

usually believes all of his followers

are as trustworthy as he is.

So, he'll keep right on fighting.

Just as long as there's someone like Maria Blanca

to fill his w*r chest for him.

- Who's she? - Another patriot.

A very wealthy one, a widow.

The two of them have been behind most of the raids

since Vega became dictator.

Art, if we can prove to this Romero

that he hasn't got a chance, maybe he'll listen to reason.

We're trying to get photographs now.

But in the meantime, I want Romero's camp found.

And I want the spy unmasked who's betraying him.

That sounds like infiltration.

If that's what it takes to get Romero to face up to reality.

You'll be working with Owen Clark, SAC Miami.

- You know Owen? - Mm-hm.

He's an excellent man, but he's got a problem.

All of his special agents are known to the exiles.

Every FBI man in Florida has been involved

with the Balaguan affair at one time or another.

So they need new faces.

Yours.

Now, here's your plane ticket to Miami.

The flight leaves in an hour.

And what's our cover, sir?

You can discuss that with Owen Clark.

He'll be boarding your plane at Jacksonville.

[instrumental music]

How'd you find out they made a raid last night, Owen?

Uh, whispers, rumors..

...and confirmation when it was all over.

When it's too late to do anything.

They used a cruiser that belongs to Senora Blanca.

We boarded it when it came back.

And?

The smiles.

"Would I care for a cup of coffee?

"'Now, really, Senor Clark'

how can you prove we put men ashore at Balagua?"

And of course I couldn't.

And they knew it.

So, we infiltrate.

Any ideas how?

Well, they obviously buy contraband arms.

No, that's too involved.

How about a couple of writers

doing a cover story for a magazine?

Yeah, or making arrangements for a television documentary.

Uh, they've been tried.

These people aren't easily conned.

Or we could volunteer for the next mission.

- That's not bad. - 'That's not good.'

These people even screen their own Balaguan exiles.

You two wouldn't get past the door.

All the better.

You volunteer and we use the misdirection gambit.

You move in while I play it clumsy?

If you think you can.

Yeah, that isn't bad, inspector.

I'll need a skill.

A skill.

[instrumental music]

This is a sticky maneuvermanoeuvre you're asking the marine court

to perform for you, inspector.

You have heard from the Pentagon.

- Haven't you, Colonel? - Yes.

With instructions to expedite my new identity?

Are you sure I can't persuade you

to do something a little less spectacular?

I'm sure.

You know, you're dealing with a tough hardened people.

They've got their native country at stake.

I've got their lives at stake.

Your identity, Mr. Jessup.

Jessup?

That's the name on your court martial

and bad conduct discharge.

How much demolition training will you need?

How much can I get in 24 hours?

Not enough.

See Sergeant Merrimon, room 9-A.

Good luck to you.

- Thank you. - And to the exiles.

[intense music]

[speaking in foreign language]

- Here you are. - Muchos gracias, senor.

Oh, for such a worthy cause, senorita

don't mention it.

You are mu sympatico.

No, I'm just against dictators.

[applause]

Is that General Romero?

It's Senora Blanca.

Oh.

- Oh, wait, senor. - Huh?

Your flag. You do want a flag, no?

Oh, oh, yeah, um, sure. Mm-hm.

Oh, what's the matter?

You are wearing a g*n.

We do not need your money, Senor police.

Oh, no, no, no! Now, wait a minute. I-I want the flag.

[dramatic music]

[indistinct chatter]

She saw us.

Find a seat, the speech is about to start.

Mm-hm.

[indistinct chatter]

[applause]

Viva Belagua!

[all cheering]

My fellow patriots

my friends..

...and even those of you who are not my friends.

On behalf of General Romero

and all of us who love the Republic of Balagua

I bid you welcome.

[all applaud]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[expl*si*n]

[dramatic music]

Alright, Merrimon, if that was a joke, it wasn't funny.

If it was an accident, you don't belong in demolition.

I don't joke and I don't have accidents.

That was indoctrination in training.

My way of telling you something you'll remember the next time

and the time after that.

Yeah, well, let me in on the secret.

One, always wear this when you're working with expl*sives.

Two, never trust anybody with your detonator

not even your best friend.

If I hadn't given you two percent plastic expl*sive

and 98 percent inert putty to play with, you'd be D-E-A-D.

Dead! Dead! Dead!

- Is that plain? - Now, wait a minute.

You pushed that thing, I didn't--

You're under instruction, mister.

You don't talk, you listen.

And the next time you take the reel of wire with you.

After the installation is set up and connected

unreel your wire back here to the detonator.

That way nobody can touch it off but you.

And at a safe distance. Do you read me?

I read you, sergeant.

[instrumental music]

Treat this like it's doomsday

because it is.

- No putty, huh? - No putty.

Danger all the way.

[music continues]

In closing, I can only say

that I'm not a political expert.

I'm simply a woman who finds it very difficult

to worry about neutrality laws

when higher laws are being trampled upon.

The laws of humanity.

Gracias.

[all applaud]

[indistinct cheering]

Sound as if you mean it.

I do.

I like the sincerity.

Senora has her eye on us again.

So I noticed.

What I have to say..

...you have heard it many times before.

'While Guam people is in chains'

'the whole world'

'is in danger of enslavement.'

What Balagua endures, we endure.

But not for long, my friends

not for much longer.

The time will come when..

[expl*si*n]

[dramatic music]

I've seen worse.

You might make it.

I've got to make it.

Let's get on with the lessons.

[instrumental music]

[speaking in foreign language]

[music continues]

[helicopter whirring]

[speaking in foreign language]

[music continues]

Okay, let's go.

[music continues]

- General Romero, sir. - Yes, Juanito.

Radio four requests information

from temporary beach shed-1, sir.

Are there any changes in the Darien Point invasion?

Report all training proceeding on schedule.

I contemplate no delays.

Does that please you?

Yes, my general.

Report to Senora Blanca

I return to Miami tomorrow.

'And we embark full force in four more days.'

And uh..

...I'll be reunited with my grandson.

Yes, my general.

[instrumental music]

Now, that's a rumor all over Miami, Lou.

Exile invasion of Balagua four days from now.

[Lewis] 'Four days?'

But not a word as to the point of departure.

Nothing.

They must be stockpiling material.

Have we got any leads on that?

Well, we've confiscated two small truck loads.

One is a drop in a bucket.

And the drivers won't talk.

What about their grouping area?

They got to be training somewhere.

I've been going out of my mind trying to run that down.

I know it has to be somewhere in the area

probably in swamp country.

But there it ends.

Used aerial reconnaissance?

Uh, curbs, helicopters

even a high altitude U-2 Photorecon.

It's the same story, nothing.

Four days.

Well, we'll just have to advance our move.

Tomorrow alright with you, Jim?

Uh, do we have a choice?

Not if we intend to prevent a mass slaughter.

Huh, let's go.

[instrumental music]

- Three-ninety. - Thanks.

Here you go, keep the change.

Do you know where I can find Senora Blanca's cruiser?

'I think it's called, uh, Machete.'

[male #1] 'Sorry, I'm a stranger here myself, pal.'

Thanks, anyway.

[music continues]

Uh, I beg your pardon, I wonder if you could help me--

This is the Machete, senor.

Oh, you overheard.

Uh, well, I-I wonder if, uh, the senora is on board.

May I enquire why you ask?

Part of my job, senor.

Oh, you're with the crew, well, that's good.

Because, uh, you can help me.

Uh, you see, I, uh, was at the rally

and I heard Senora Blanca and..

Yeah, well, what I'm trying to say is

that I was very impressed

and very taken by what the general and she had to say

'and I wondered if, uh--'

[speaking in foreign language]

Don't you see that the senor wears

the flag of our beloved Balagua?

Come aboard, senor, please.

Thank you, ma'am.

[speaking in foreign language]

My pleasure, senor, uh--

Uh, Rhodes, ma'am. Jim Rhodes.

Quite a handsome boat you got here.

[chuckles] Thank you.

Uh, would you like to see the main cabin?

Uh, yes, please.

[male #2] 'Hey!'

Hey, hang on to that.

And so I thought that if there were

a place for a recruit in your organization--

Organization?

Yes, yes.

Let us say if a man wanted to, uh, volunteer

'for an invasion mission.'

Let's stop this pretense, shall we?

I'm sorry, did I, uh, did I say something wrong?

You haven't said nor done anything right

since you came down to Miami.

You must be, uh..

...a brand new FBI agent.

FBI agent?

A very transparent one, senor.

'I agree with General Romero.'

It is time we end this foolish masquerade.

You are wasting your time and ours.

No-now, look here, you two have no right to suspect--

We have many reasons, senor.

Not only to suspect, but to know.

'Your exchanges with Owen Clark at our loyalty rally'

when you thought you were not observed.

The g*n you were wearing then

and very likely now.

You visited the local FBI headquarters

oh, and even the taxi driver who brought you here.

One of Owen Clark's special agents.

You needn't go on, senora.

Uh, the question is, uh, do you intend to go on?

You and all the other FBI men?

Yes, we do, sir.

Now, you people are refugees

who have received sanctuary in the United States.

Now, our job is to prevent you from violating

the neutrality laws in getting yourselves hurt.

You will never k*ll our patriotism.

No, but we'll keep you from k*lling your patriots.

I do not k*ll my patriots, senor.

If I were to admit that they have sent landing missions

to Balagua which I do not

I would add that we haven't lost

one single man in those missions.

You lost six the other night, sir.

Including your own grandson.

Wait a moment, senor. What you have said is a lie.

A cruel and malicious lie.

I'm sorry, senora, What I told you was true.

No. We've had three confirm the radio messages from Miguel.

Maria!

Senora, listen to me.

That landing mission was wiped out.

'Now, if you've had word from any member of that mission'

'the message was faked.'

Vega and his people are trapping you piecemeal.

'Probably an information from somebody in your own camp.'

You better get out of here. Now!

You don't believe me, do you?

No, I do not believe you.

?

Show this person ashore.

That's alright, I can find my own way, thank you.

What have you there, ?

I'm not sure, senora.

I'm not sure at all.

I advice against it, Maria.

We could be accused by the police

of tampering with a stolen property.

Or by the owner, senora.

Well, then we must determine who the owner is.

The man who threw it to you or the man who pursued him.

Then we can take steps to return it.

Here, what.. What is this?

"Sergeant Corporal.

Private first class, Lewis Jessup.

United States Marine Corp.

Demolition."

And the serial number is--"

[Lewis] '4-4-8-6-6-2-1!'

And that's former private first class.

Now..

...unemployed civilian.

Oh, uh, that's not government issued.

You can keep it for souvenir

but stay away from the coffee can

it's dynamite.

[laughs]

[theme music]

I'm very sorry, Mrs., Mrs. Blanca.

I can't help you.

But Colonel, all I ask--

It's not our policy to divulge information

about former members of the service.

Not unless you have authorization

from higher command.

That's such a little thing.

Uh, just a hint to his back ground

his abilities or qualifications.

I'm sorry.

Or at least whether or not he ever was in the service.

Ever was a demolition expert.

I can't help you.

Even though it might mean a job for a man

who's now unemployed?

Surely, you can disregard your official regulations

to help a man who needs work

As Senor Jessup does.

Jessup? Lewis Jessup?

A sergeant, then corporal, then private.

I have his serial number here.

[Novin] 'Don't bother.'

I particularly don't discuss men with bad conduct discharges.

And I've said too much now.

- Sergeant Kessler. - Yes, sir.

Senora Blanca.

When you see Lou Jessup again, would you tell him that

Judy Kessler said hello?

You know him?

Well, I knew him a long time ago.

Of course, no woman would ever try to hold him.

Gambling was his big interest.

'That's what got him busted from sergeant, PFC'

'and, and the court martial.'

It was fun while it lasted though.

The off-base dances

and the out-of-the-way cafes

the romantic rides

in a borrowed car with the top down.

[instrumental music]

[Maria] 'How beautiful it is here!'

You might almost say idyllic.

I might if I knew what it meant.

Is that another way of saying romantic?

I think you're being cynical.

There's so much so soon

I like to know who's trying to buy what.

As for instance?

We only met yesterday.

Today it's champagne and violins for lunch

it's Lou and Maria in a car I couldn't afford if I live to be.

You could afford it if you wanted to.

You see what I mean?

You're not willing to take me at face value?

Some face.

You know, a long time ago, I made two rules for myself.

Number one, never mess around with another guy's woman.

I'm a widow, Lewis.

My husband died before a Vega firing squad

without even a trial.

Your second rule?

Stay out of the other guy's w*r.

Unless the price is right.

How does that apply to me?

Come off it, baby. You're bankrolling a w*r.

Everybody knows it.

'Look, if it's a job you're offering me'

name it and come up with a price.

If you want me to blow up Balagua, the answer's no.

Then...would you teach my soldiers how

and name your own price?

Ten grand, how does that grab you?

Ten grand?

The goin' rate, that's 10,000 dollars.

Agreed.

But we don't have much time.

We, we embark two nights from tonight.

The training must be intensive.

You've got a deal.

Few miles from here, there is a truck waiting

to take you to our training area.

You see, Lewis

I was sure of you.

[instrumental music]

[car engine rumbling]

What's his job, see that I don't back out?

Would you?

[chuckles]

Some face.

Get the money up.

[instrumental music]

Ah, this is really comfortable.

[speaking in foreign language]

Bad!

As long as I can't enjoy the view

I was hoping you tell me all about your mother-in-law.

[speaking in foreign language]

Oh, well

I don't feel like talking anyhow.

[sighs] Call me when we get there.

I'd be very happy to, Mr. Jessup.

[instrumental music]

[engine rumbling]

[music continues]

[airplane droning]

[engine rumbling]

[music continues]

Hey, what's that nut trying to do?

Pablo is like a mule, Mr. Jessup.

When he knows he's near the barn, he makes a run for it.

Yeah, well, somebody better tell that mule

he's holdin' a wagon full of fire crackers.

It might've slipped his mind.

Pablo!

'Take it easy!'

'We don't want all this stuff to blow up at once.'

'Mr. Jessup has to show us'

how to use it a little at a time.

Alright, that's how it works.

You ready to give it a whirl?

[all] Si.

Okay, you're on your own.

Let's go.

Faster. Move, move, move!

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

Vamos! Vamos!

[music continues]

One minute, nine seconds, Senor Jessup.

Too slow, we're not done yet.

Well, now, hurry up with those connections.

Ready?

Fire!

[explosions]

Must it be so loud and

and so much smoke?

It could attract attention.

Sure, it could. You want results or don't you?

But of course, we do, Lewis.

So do I.

That's not bad.

I will tackle the M-1 type firing device.

M1, Senor Jessup?

I haven't got time for games, General.

Whatever you call in your lingo, I'm talking about

chemical delay detonators to use when you can't string wire.

Don't tell me you haven't got 'em stockpiled.

But we didn't know about them.

Well, it's time you learn.

We better get back to Miami.

Today?

Of course, today. How long do you think you got?

You're jumpin' off in 48 hours.

You get me back to Miami, I think I can find enough M-1s

and M-80 grenade fuels to show 'em how they're used at least.

Well, if you go, you'll go in the truck.

As you came. So that you cannot betray your position.

What are you trying to do

sabotage your own exile movement?

The truck's too slow.

If you don't trust me, put a blind fold on me

but I'm goin' to Miami fast or I'm not goin', period.

[dramatic music]

But granted your lapse time and estimated speed

you're reasonably accurate, inspector.

And that you've made no mistakes as to change of direction..

...I will put your gas station stop

'somewhere within this circle.'

Well, it doesn't find the needle

but it narrows down the haystack.

Then some 20 minutes later at about 45 miles an hour

that'd be roughly 15 miles

we made a right turn on a very rough road.

It was exactly 2:30.

You might get a good fix on it from the fact that

a jet flew overhead at that time.

I think it was south bound.

Did you hear any other planes, Lou?

[Lewis] 'No.'

'We got a couple of other factors to include.'

The, uh, bell on a gas pump rang ten times.

Price was 3.09.

And make it 30.9 cents a gallon, but I know

the prevailing price around here is 34.

Then check the back country station's cutting prices.

There is a gas w*r outside of Miami.

It all helps.

Oh, here we are.

This is a master flight schedule with changes noted daily.

Now, within your time limitation

here's the pan southern

South bound, Miami to Bogota. 2:06 departure.

I'll check with the airline.

They should be able to give us an estimated

flight position for 2:30.

Haystack's getting smaller.

Yeah, but from here on we group.

And the road was so rough, I couldn't guess their speed

except that it was too fast.

I do know that the training area is somewhere near the swamps

'could be around the gulf, and in light or a bay.'

Enough to get you started on?

Yeah, plenty.

Oh, one thing more.

I'd like a 24-hour monitor on all

short wave radio phones, citizen's band and clandestine.

Especially, any signal powerful enough to reach Balagua

either directed by or short maritime relay.

That's a big order.

Can't do it all without the help of a navy and a coast guard.

[chuckles] I'll get on it.

Are you, uh, going back with Maria Blanca?

Yeah, with or without blindfold as soon as Sergeant Merrimon can

liberate a couple of M-1 chemical delay detonators

to make it look legitimate.

I want you and Clark probing ahead.

Check directions. Ask questions about smoke and explosions.

See if that part of our scheme paid off.

How about a follow up car behind you?

Definitely not. Senora Blanca might notice.

After all our elaborate plans

I don't want to jeopardize the final round.

[theme music]

Right on target.

Truck tire tracks

sports car.

[engine rumbling]

[instrumental music]

You're spoiling me.

No blindfold this time?

I don't think you betrayed us, Lewis.

Why do you say that?

We're not followed.

The way you were driving, who could keep up?

You're good, you know.

Three years a widow, remember?

One learns the self-reliance.

Then why do you lean on a crutch?

A crutch, Lewis?

Like backin' invasions.

Do you call that a crutch

to get even with Vega for k*lling my husband?

You're kiddin' yourself.

What you're doin' won't bring back a dead man and you know it.

'It'll only pile more dead men in his grave.'

Are you suggesting that I withdraw from the enterprise?

You're paying me to train your men

not make suggestions.

Well, I will not withdraw.

Okay, go ahead and waste your looks and your money.

You won't get any sympathy out of me for not being

the woman you ought to be.

Are you afraid that's how I will turn out?

You better keep that beautiful face pointed toward the road.

[instrumental music]

[engine rumbling]

Price w*r, huh?

Well, there's no law against giving discounts.

Well, listen, if you're from the company..

FBI.

Do you mind telling me if you were on duty

yesterday between 2:00 and 2:30?

Yes, sir, I sure was.

Oh, what is it you're looking into

that blasting over yonder towards Salton's Bay?

Where's that?

Well, you follow this road till you come to a little sign

next to the turn of--

[car approaching]

Wow-wee! Look at that baby go!

- Jim, did you see who that was? - Uh-huh.

Question is, did she see us?

- If she did, we're in trouble. - Yeah.

Hey, where's your telephone?

Now what?

You did not see the FBI agents?

At 80 miles an hour?

They were there.

You could've sent them ahead.

Thanks, senora, and Adios.

No, wait, I..

I was distraught. I did not think clearly.

But if they find our staging area now

if they follow us, we..

We have expl*sives.

We could disable their car.

Thanks, but no, thanks.

You refuse to prove yourself.

Perhaps, you're one of them after all.

Alright. Get out!

I've done man's work before. I can again.

You monkey around with those M-1s,

you'll get yourself k*lled.

Alright, you win. Let's get back there.

[instrumental music]

[engine revving]

[tire screeching]

[engine revving]

[music continues]

Get back!

[tire screeching]

[expl*si*n]

[music continues]

Move to the point of embarkation

through the ever blazed stream today?

Now, it is our only hope.

The FBI is close at hand.

We are in danger of discovery at any moment.

If that happens

our expedition will come to nothing.

Now, will you give the command to move out, will you?

What you ask is...is logistically impossible.

But for the sake of Balagua and my grandson Miguel..

...it will be done.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Alright, men, unload your packs.

You have ten minutes rest.

g*ns and ammunition will be issued and then we move out!

Well, might as well sit down. Beats walkin'.

Four of your agents just came into the salt and space side.

Three more down on the beach to greet the landing boats..

...if and when they arrive.

Oh, yeah, there you go. Brought you a present.

And, uh..

...these.

Delivered to your office right after our call

from reinforcements came through.

Oh, yeah, the, uh, the radio phone monitoring paid off too.

Thanks to navy and coast guard cooperation.

- Erskine was right. - He was right.

All our men in position?

Ready and waiting.

Attention, Balaguan exiles.

'This is the FBI.'

'Your position is surrounded.'

'Remain as you are.'

Do not attempt to escape.

No!

If they want w*r, they'll have it.

We must free our homes.

[g*nsh*t]

You heard the order. This is the FBI.

Put down your g*ns.

Spy, as I warned you.

Oh, no. Lewis, no.

I said put down the g*n.

How many of us do you think you can k*ll

before we k*ll you and all your men?

[Owen] 'Attention, Balaguan exiles.'

'Attention General Romero and Inspector Erskine.'

'Special Agent Rhodes is coming to you under truce.'

'I repeat. Under truce'

[dramatic music]

No, wait. Please!

It's foolish, Jim.

Take a look at these. Maybe it would change your mind.

It's a radio phone monitor report.

Pretty well nails it down, don't it?

From a source in Balagua, general.

Taken in the capital. Those are exiles.

Hanging from lamp posts in the public square..

...including your grandson.

Miguel.

[speaking in foreign language]

[instrumental music]

Miguel.

Put down your arms.

There will be no invasion.

No, no, no.

It's all over. Finished.

Put down your arms!

So the Vega forces were waiting?

They were waiting.

We have evidence that every move you made

was reported by a spy right in your own camp.

Spy who kept urging you to move ahead

and then sent your men to their deaths

by means of a simple piece of equipment you never questioned.

[intense music]

Alright, it's over.

You'll be brought to trial

for espionage against the United States..

...for using military equipment

to transmit unlawful information.

- Get him outta here. - Let's go.

[Erskine] 'As for you people'

'the United States is in complete sympathy'

'with your goals.'

But you're guests in this country

and your present course is not only feudal

it's in violation of our laws.

General Romero..

...while the FBI doesn't make decisions in these affairs

the fact that you didn't actually ship-out this time

should weigh heavily in your favor

when the facts are presented to the proper authorities.

[dramatic music]

You have saved many lives today, Lewis.

And I've learned much.

Do you think it will be very difficult

for me to forget the rest?

The rest?

To forget my hate..

...and be a woman again?

That should take no time at all, Maria.

No time at all.

[theme music]

You know, Lou, I have, uh, nagging feeling

that we left somebody behind in the Everglades

that we're gonna miss.

Just a little bit.

- Oh. - Mm-hm.

Sergeant Corporal Private busted-a-civilian Lewis Jessup.

He was quite a guy.

He was a shadow

with a disgraceful past and worthless future.

Definitely someone to forget.

Do you think Maria ever will?

If she meets the right man.
