The Giant will die.
The Giant will die.
What are you doing, mister?
Hello, honey.
What are you doing?
Me? Uh, playing a game.
Are you here all alone, sweetheart?
That's too bad. Look, honey, I have some candy in my car.
Like to have some?
[female #1] 'Beverley Dean! Beverley Dean!'
'Beverley Dean!'
Hello, over here.
[panting]
This little dickens belong to you?
Beverley Dean, what did I tell you
about runnin' off like that?
They're just terrible at this age.
You turn around once, and they are gone.
Now, don't you scare me again like that, you hear?
Can I have the candy now?
You know better than that, Beverley Dean.
We never take candy from strangers.
Sorry if she bothered you!
Quite alright. No harm done.
[theme music]
[male narrator] The FBI.
A Quinn Martin, Warner Bros. production
Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Also starring, Philip Abbott.
Stephen Brooks.
With guest stars
Robert Duvall.
Patricia Smith.
David Sheiner.
Tonight's episode, "The Giant k*ller."
[instrumental music]
I'm back.
- Oh, Mr. Rhodes? - Huh?
Mr. Erskine would like to see you right away.
- Problem? - I don't know.
Mr. Ward is with him and a monitoring agent
from the FCC, a Mr. Meade.
Well, thank you, Thelma.
[knock on door]
[Joseph on recorder] 'The Giant will die.'
'The Giant will die.'
Come in, come in.
Jim, you know Harry Meade.
Yes, I do. How are you, sir?
Well, I'm not sure. Puzzled, primarily.
- You heard the recording? - Yes, sir.
You want me to fill him in, Art?
[Arthur] 'Please.'
Well, to begin with, this is a tape
of an unauthorized broadcast
we picked up from Philadelphia
a little over 78 hours ago.
Just the one declarative sentence, repeated once.
No explanation, no call letters, nothing.
So, we put it down for a prank. Forgot about it.
Twenty four hours later, we picked it up again.
This time from Cincinnati.
Same sentence, same repetition.
Twenty five hours after that, a third transmission.
Triangulated just north of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
[Thelma] 'Yes, sir?'
Thelma, get me a small map
of the United States, will you?
Harry, you-you said that the third message came
twenty five hours after the second?
Mm-hmm. He sends at noon.
Bartlesville is in the central time zone.
- He had gained an hour. - Oh.
You know, Harry
I, uh, I don't quite understand
why you think this is a matter for the FBI?
I don't quite understand why I do either.
Art, to tell you the truth..
...we thought it might be some sort of code.
You mean, uh, espionage?
How does that strike you, Lewis?
Possible.
Or it could be a direct threat.
A warning to us to keep our Giant safe, if we can.
Giant.
- Oh. Thanks, Thelma. - Oh.
What Giants?
You know any Giants in this country?
Uh..
Paul Bunyan?
Cyclops.
Atlas? Titan?
[Arthur] 'Thor?'
[dramatic music]
Titan. Thor.
Let's see..
Philadelphia.
Cincinnati.
Bartlesville.
South and west.
Then he marched.
Then he marched to where?
Bartlesville.
Amarillo.
[Erskine] 'Clovis.
'Clifton'
Safford.
- Tucson.. - That's it.
- That's what? - Tucson.
My son served there in the Air Force.
Headquarters for the 573rd Strategic m*ssile Squadron.
They readied the Thor for launching.
Now, let me get this straight.
You're telling me somebody wants to foul up one of my babies?
Well, that's what the FBI is trying to find out
General Cameron.
Could it be done, sir?
I don't see how.
since its been activated.
Nobody gets within a mile of those missiles
or he's cleared right back to the day he was born.
As a matter of fact, the only time
they're even halfway vulnerable is..
Yes, sir?
Excuse me a minute.
Charlie, when is the Vandenberg launch due?
Hm.
When did they move?
Okay. Thank you.
An unfueled m*ssile leaves Tucson
for California tomorrow.
'She goes by truck. She goes slow.'
Now, she could be fair game for anyone sn*per with a good eye.
Now, without fuel there'd be no expl*si*n as you know
but the sensitive guidance system might be destroyed.
General, is there anything special
about this particular m*ssile?
Something special about every m*ssile.
New designs to test modifications.
Actually..
...this is off the record, not for publication, gentlemen.
This is not just any m*ssile we're dealing with
we haven't even named it yet
but if we lose this one
we lose four to six months, and believe me
that we can't afford.
Maybe you better talk to a man in our office
of special investigation.
Paul Antonelli.
[instrumental music]
Impossible to destroy it, huh? Pfft.
You bet it's possible.
My question is, who are we dealing with?
Who are we dealing with?
Enemy agents, huh?
The Martians?
A group of maniacs?
Enemy agents not in the habit of advertising their strikes.
And I don't believe in Martians yet.
So, we're down to the maniacs, right?
One maniac.
Sir, why are you so convinced that the man is all alone?
Because it's a loner's pattern.
He's given us plenty of warning.
He's got that need to be recognized
without being identified.
You're right.
He's like a suicider who has left the bridge.
He doesn't need anybody to help him down.
Well, how could this guy have known a m*ssile
was leaving in the first place?
Newspaper, TV, radio, a letter home, word of mouth.
You see, we can't hide all activities
or we don't even try to.
Of course, the actual route is kept secret
the actual time of departure.
What about a mock convoy?
Well, we've done that before too, yes.
Well, it might be an approach.
What kind of an approach?
Suppose the news leaks out that the m*ssile is taking a
a specific route
a route X
well, wouldn't that lead the sn*per away
from the real route?
- We need a dummy m*ssile. - There's no problem there.
We have an orientation model made of wood.
We can put it on the regular trailer.
Alright then, let's try it.
But there's still a serious danger.
When he hits it, he'll find out it's a dummy.
And the next thing he'll hit will be the real one.
You'll only have one chance to pick him up.
We'll pick him up, sir.
Then let's get started.
- Thank you, Mr. Ward. - Paul.
The air force will get us to Tucson.
How many, uh, seats for the FBI?
One.
Think you can handle it alone?
Yes, sir.
- Call me the minute you get in. - Right.
[Arthur] 'Lewis?'
Lewis, I, uh, just talked to General Cameron.
He wanted me to know privately
that if there's a delay in this launching
it could be, uh, catastrophic.
They're testing some vital new modification.
If we lose that m*ssile
the Unites States is in serious trouble.
And you think I can do more in Tucson than here?
Don't you?
Arthur, both Cameron and Antonelli agree
that there's no way on Earth
to stop a fanatic's initial attack
unless we know who he is
what he looks like, how his mind works.
We haven't got time to try for an identification.
I think we have to try, Arthur.
I don't think we have any choice.
Lewis, do you understand what the stakes are here?
I understand.
You got about 12 hours to find your man
and one chance in over a 180 million
that you are right.
Well, alright.
Good luck.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
[Marilee on phone] 'Hello?'
Hello?
Hello, Marilee. How are you, sweetheart?
Hi, honey. I thought it might be you.
'Were you in bed?'
Mm-hmm, watching TV.
- Kids okay? - 'Couldn't be sassier.'
'I told them, "Alright, you're riding high now
'but you just wait until your daddy gets home."'
- 'How are you?' - Fine.
Have you seen a doctor?
'Sweetheart..'
Joey, if there's something wrong
you ought to find out about it.
I know you're worried.
You've been like a stranger lately.
Marilee, will you please get off my back? I'm alright.
I'm sorry, honey. It's been a long day.
Any luck?
'Yeah, some.'
I place too close with that new item
with a place called Burtons.
A big novelty store.
'Wonderful.'
Well, I just wanted to check in.
You tell those kids, daddy said to shape up or else..
'I will. Where are you?'
Tucson.
I hear that's quite a town.
Now, you just stay out of trouble.
I will, honey. Goodnight.
'Goodnight, Joe.'
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
Yes, sir. That does it.
Thank you very much.
Oh, Paul, I was, I was just gonna call you.
The ICC and California Division of Highways
just okayed the last leg of the alternate route.
Well, we're in business then, right?
Well, let's hope so.
It better be considerably
more than a hope, mister.
Ah, this is Major Slidell
This Special Agent Rhodes, the FBI.
The major's gonna command the real convoy.
I understand my departure has been set back two hours.
Yeah, that's right, sir.
May I ask why?
So the mock convoy can get away well ahead of you.
- Over my original route? - 'Mm-hmm.'
While I'm slotted north on highways that are strange to me
through terrain I don't even know.
We're hoping the fanatic won't know them either, sir.
- If there is a fanatic. - Uh, major--
Coffee, anybody?
[Slidell] 'Just let me say this.'
I'm responsible to get that m*ssile to Vandenberg
in one piece and on time.
Now, I've checked over this alternate route
and I can state categorically
that a worst one couldn't have been picked.
In my opinion it's slow and it's dangerous!
And in my opinion, major, it may be the only thing
that can save your m*ssile.
Uh, major.
[sighs]
Alright, I've had my say, and I'll shut up.
But this mythical fanatic better be worth all the trouble
because there are going to be some enquiries made.
I can promise you that.
Paul.
Oh, boy.
Come on, let's get some breakfast, we take off
in about an hour. Anything from Erskine?
Yeah. Paul, I talked to him about three o'clock, our time.
He said they've narrowed the 190 million suspects
down to a mere handful
less than 1500.
That's some handful.
[instrumental music]
[phone ringing]
Well, what about Grenville?
Where?
Colorado State Penitentiary. Yes.
Thank you.
Oh, Mr. Ward, good morning.
Good morning. Have you seen Inspector Erskine?
Yes, sir, he's shaving, he said he'll be back, um
well, any minute now.
You mean, he was here all night?
Yes, sir.
Ms. Laurens.
Uh, yes, I will.
Oh, inspector
resident agent in, uh, Bartlesville
wants you to call him right away.
Lewis, I've been on the phone with General Cameron.
- He wants to know-- - Excuse me, just one second.
Alright, Jo, get me Bartlesville, will you?
Yes, sir. Oh, and, um, this just came in.
Somebody's dead, somebody's in prison
somebody's to be counted for
work, at home..
The list is getting manageable.
I'd like to know your definition of manageable.
- Sixty seven names. - Sixty seven.
Suppose your man isn't even on the list of known fanatics.
Suppose the earth crashes into the sun tomorrow, Arthur.
You do what you can and hope for the best.
What more can you do?
Well, you better hurry.
It's now 6:48, Tucson time.
The convoy leaves at seven.
The Resident Agent Benton, Bartlesville.
Erskine.
Inspector, I'm not sure what we've got here
but, uh, I thought I might as well
check it out with you anyway.
It's in regard to your Giant k*ller.
What, you got a lead?
Well, we may have.
I got in touch with the local police
according to your instructions.
And among other possibilities
they mentioned a certain, Mrs. Starling said
lodged a complaint late yesterday
about a man she suspected
might have been a child molester.
'Yeah.'
Oh, Mrs. Starling said that she found her little girl
talking to a male Caucasian, about 35.
The man was a alone.
The little girl later told her mother that, uh
the man had been mumbling to himself about Giants.
Did she notice anything that could've been
a radio transmitter?
Mrs. Starling said that the man had a large case of some kind
but she couldn't tell what it was.
- Oh, what time was that? - '12 noon.'
I don't suppose she got the license number?
No, sir, but she's positive the car is from out of state.
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, something like that.
Could she describe the man to you?
She's going over that now with the artist.
I'll send the picture to you
as soon as she gives it the, "Okay."
Good, thank you, Ben, and see that
Jim Rhodes gets a copy, he's with the convoy.
Goodbye.
Jo, get me the break down by states.
I want the names from New Jersey
Delaware and Pennsylvania.
Yes, sir.
Getting closer, Art.
Not close enough.
It's 7:01.
They're on the highway.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
- Yes, sir? - Uh, my name is Rhodes, FBI.
I'd like to ask you a couple of questions about--
Oh, oh, sure.
You were contacted last night by a couple of agents?
Yes, sir, they wanted me to give the record
of the out of state cars that drop by, yeah.
I got it right here.
Only three of them, all from California.
Hey, uh, what's this all about?
The m*ssile they're trucking up to Mountainburg?
Oh, is that supposed to be a secret?
Yeah, well, uh, thanks for your help.
Pleasure.
- Here you go, Jim. - Oh, thanks, Paul.
Alright.
- Anything? - Mm.
Three, out of state cars, all California.
I don't know.
I'm beginning to wonder if we might not be
on a wild goose chase after all.
Oh, let's hope we are.
Elite car to convoy.
[man on radio] 'Come in.'
How does it look back there?
[man on radio] 'Traffic extra light, no incidents.'
Yeah, well, as soon as we see you
we're going to the next check point.
[man on radio] 'Roger.'
Well..
...if he ever does make a move, this is the kind of country
he'll probably pick.
[dramatic music]
Jim, let's go.
[music continues]
[music continues]
Sergeant, over here. Sergeant!
[intense music]
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
Paul, radio back to the second checkpoint.
See if they can find access to that secondary road.
Block it off.
He saw that wooden frame, he knows it's a fake.
He'll go for the real one now.
Yeah.
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
This is it.
It just came in, we're opening the box now.
I think we've got some good fragments, Lou.
Looks like some kind of r*fle grenade.
Anything more on side road?
Uh, nothing, we really combed that bluff.
No, no tire tracks, no litter, no..
Listen, Lou, I'm..
...I'm sorry I let you down.
You didn't let me down, you tried something
that didn't quite work.
Where's the real convoy now?
Oh, they're right behind us. I brought in 20 more agents
from the Southern California area.
Believe me, our boy won't hit us
from the secondary road next time.
Jim.
Oh, here they come now, Lou, I'll check with you later.
Mr. Ward just called, he'd like to see you right away.
I'll have something for you on these fragments, very shortly.
Thanks, John.
[instrumental music]
Hello, Jean.
Oh, Mr. Erskine, he's on the phone.
General Cameron?
Mr. Hoover.
[typewriter keys clacking]
[telephone beeping]
Oh, you can go in now.
Oh, Jean, I'm expecting a call from Fire Arms Unit.
Would you put through when it comes in?
Yes, sir.
Sit down, Lewis.
b*mb fragments just came in, John's checking 'em now.
Sit down, Lewis.
We had one chance to catch that maniac and he got away.
Well, he's not gonna get away again.
How soon can you pack?
You're making a mistake, Arthur.
I asked you a question.
I can pack in ten minutes and leave whenever you say
but when we're this close..
Lewis, the man struck.
He attempted sabotage and he got away
that's all that counts.
Now, you've had your twelve hours and they didn't pay off.
They will, Arthur.
The clue to that fanatic's identity is here.
In that laboratory upstairs.
At the-the end of those telephone lines.
That's a matter of opinion, isn't it?
And in this case it's my opinion that's going to prevail.
That convoy has to get off the highway
between dusk and dawn.
It's scheduled to stop tonight at Copperton, California
'I expect you to be there when it beds down.'
The Air force will have a plane ready for you at 4:30.
That's all, Lewis.
[instrumental music]
[telephone buzzing]
Yes?
[Jean] 'Fire Arms Examination called, sir.'
'They'd like Inspector Erskine to come up immediately.'
'They say it's urgent.'
This isn't a new grenade, inspector.
Shells of this type were used for the first time in 1942.
Could the public ever buy them from w*r surplus
No, sir, most of them were sold to the allied nations
ten to fifteen years ago and the rest
are in various military depots, except for 12 grenades
that were stolen from the Army Ordinance Depot
in Wilmington, 1961.
What was the disposition of the case?
Unsolved.
Lewis, I don't care whether you leave
from Washington or Wilmington or Timbuktu
but I want you on that Air Force jet
when it lands at Copperton..
'...this afternoon.'
[dramatic music]
If you've already seen the burglary files, inspector
the only additional document I could show you
would be the duty officer's report.
How many civilian employees does the depot have, lieutenant?
Well, around 40. Mostly G3's and fours.
Clerks, typists, an accountant or two.
When an employee quits or is discharged
under unusual circumstances, do you keep his files separate?
You bet we do. Yes, sir.
We got a cabinet full of odd ba*ls.
Of course, some of them fell by the wayside
as long ago as, 20 years.
You know, sir, that's not a bad idea.
Who ever grabbed those r*fle grenades
knew his way around here pretty good.
It's gonna take you forever to sift through all these files.
Well, let's see if we can cut those odds down
a little, lieutenant.
We'll start with "Allen Joshua R."
Not here, sir.
"Butterlake Earl."
Not here, sir.
"Danaty Rafael."
[dramatic music]
Room seven.
I think you'll find everything in order.
It's fine.
Any good restaurants around?
Uh, Brass Rail.
Block and a half south.
They don't open till four though.
Give you time for a swim.
You'll be all alone.
Not many people stop driving this early.
I'm waiting for some friends.
Oh, uh, they meeting you here? My place?
No, I came on ahead.
I figured at the rate they're driving
I'll have to stop at Copperton.
I'll find 'em.
Okay, mister, uh..
Walker.
"Joseph Maurice?"
Yes, sir.
Oh, sorry, sir.
Subject interviewed by security of--
Inspector, Erskine, I'm Special Agent Peter.
- From the Wilmington office. - Yes, Peter.
This wire photo just came in via Washington, inspector.
It's from Bartlesville.
- You recognize him? - Hmm.
No, sir, but he may have been before my time.
"Subject interviewed by security officer
"Captain M Hadiston, 6th June 1961
"after subjects name appeared in a news paper advertisement
"placed by a known communist front organization
"condemning US defense policies.
"Subject was co-operative during initial interviews.
"Stated that he had been solicited
"by people at his home and he was not
"not quite aware just what the petition would say.
"That he was duped in to signing it.
"Since subjects duties were non-classified
"Captain Hadiston intended to take no further action.
"Following day, Walker resigned. Married, two children.
"Prior employment US Air Force G3
There should be a listing on Special Skills.
I see.
Here we are.
"Experienced in the care and maintenance
"of all Air Force firearms.
"Also able to send and receive wireless transmissions
although unlicensed."
The address, uh..
[dramatic music]
[doorbell ringing]
Mrs. Joseph Walker?
- Yes. - FBI.
My name is Erskine, this is Special Agent Kieler.
We'd, uh, like to talk to your husband, please
if he's home.
Well, no, he isn't.
What's this about?
Does Mr. Walker work in town, ma'am?
No, he's a salesman.
Mainline Novelty Company, uh, Philadelphia.
Do you know where he is now?
Somewhere in, uh, south-west, uh..
'He called from Tucson.'
Is this your husband?
[music continues]
Come in, please.
I knew there was something wrong.
He's in trouble again, isn't he?
Again?
Well, you must know his record or you..
...you wouldn't be here to..
Someone came around after he..
...wrote to the President in 1961.
There was nothing secret about it
he, he signed his name.
Was that the veil threat upon the capital?
Afterward I asked him..
...why he'd think of doing a thing like that?
And he said, he, he didn't know, he
he just thought that somebody should do something
to stop all the wars.
'k*ll somebody, blow up something.'
'To draw attention to peace.'
He knew he was sick.
He committed himself to a hospital.
It was his own idea.
Everybody told me, I should leave him.
But I said, "Just let me handle my own life."
I love him.
He's trying, he's gonna be alright.
Do you know where to contact him now?
No.
But he..
...he calls every night.
May we have permission to monitor your calls?
Yes, certainly, anything.
Just, help him. Please?
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
- Paul. - Oh!
Welcome to Copperton Airbase, inspector.
- Still on the convoy. - Yes, sir.
We're dug in at the west edge of the city.
Oh, sir, I'd like to congratulate you and your men
on their quick identification.
Jim's checked every hotel and motel in town
after you sent Walker's name and description.
- Any luck? - He's here.
- Let's go. - The Bel Air Palms Motel.
He signed in as, John W Smith
but the car is registered to Joseph Walker.
Now, Rhodes has had the motel staked out
for about a half an hour now.
[instrumental music]
Hello, Jim.
I'll check with you later, inspector.
- Alright. - Lou, you made good time.
- How's everything here? - Mm, quiet.
That's, uh..
...that's Walker's car right over there.
Right in front of room seven.
And the manager said he took a swim
and then went to dinner at about 4:30.
I've, I've put two agents in the restaurant
that the manager recommended, and two in the room
right next to Walkers'.
Lou, I really foiled this one up.
Why do you say that?
I didn't get him.
And he didn't get the m*ssile.
And you pulled him away from actual route.
You bought us time to identify him.
Tracked him here.
You did the best you could.
Well, there just maybe something
to, uh, negate.
All that?
I got a search warrant as soon as we located the motel.
We, uh, found the grenades.
Now, you told me that he stole twelve.
'He fired one at the m*ssile, he fired one at me.'
That would leave 10.
'There were nine.'
He must have one with him.
Refill, pal?
Uh, no.
I'm getting a little hungry.
Uh, do you have the time?
Yeah, it's, uh, twenty after five.
It's twenty past eight in Wilmington.
It's time to call the missus.
Can you bust that up for me?
Yeah, sure.
I hear the Brass Rail is not a bad place to eat.
Well, it's the best.
I think I'll give it a try.
That's four and one, it's five.
Thanks.
[instrumental music]
[telephone ringing]
Hello?
Hi, honey.
It's the wandering soul, how are you?
Fine. Hi.
- 'Hey, what's the matter?' - What?
You sound like you have got a cold or something.
No. No, I..
'Are kids around?'
They're in bed, Joey.
This early?
They, they were all tired out.
Marilee, are you crying?
I guess I am tired too.
Joey...where are you?
Copperton, California, why?
[dramatic music]
There's somebody with you.
No, Joey, I'm alone.
Goodbye, sweetheart. I love you.
Joey..
...please come home.
No, I can't, baby, goodbye. Kiss the kids for me.
[dramatic music]
[door shuts]
Long distance.
I want Copperton, California.
[indistinct chatter]
Gentlemen, what could I get for you?
FBI. Do you know this man?
Yeah, yeah, I remember him.
He was in here a little while ago.
Did he say where he was going?
Uh, let's, let's see, uh..
Yeah. Yeah, the, the Brass Rail, for dinner.
Why? What did he do?
We just want to talk to him. Thanks.
It's the restaurant the motel manager mentioned.
If he's as spooked out as Kieler said
he probably won't go anywhere near it.
Yeah.
[telephone ringing]
Yes, sir.
Erskine, any developments?
No, sir, the car is still there, but no sign of Walker.
Alright, keep your eyes open.
Walker knows something's up.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
[telephone ringing]
Yes.
Right.
Thank you.
Convoy off at 6:01, sir.
Estimated time of arrival at Vandenberg, 3:30.
Well, he isn't coming back for the car.
Give me latest stolen car report
from the Copperton Police.
Yes, sir.
[instrumental music]
[siren wailing]
What's the matter, officer? What did I do?
What's your name?
Elton Fredricks.
See your drivers license, please?
- Sure, why not. - Okay.
[dramatic music]
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
Yes.
Yes, I've got it.
Copperton Police just found a highway patrolman
unconscious, on the edge of town.
His clothes and his bike are gone.
[dramatic music]
Give me the radio room.
[engine revving]
- 'Inspector to 19.' - Nineteen.
[man on radio] 'I have Inspector Erskine for you.'
Jim, how big a motorcycle escort are you carrying?
Four officers, two in front, two in the rear.
Check it, if there's a fifth man, it may be Walker.
- Nineteen to trailer-- - Jim!
Cut him off.
[tires screeching]
[dramatic music]
- 'Get rid of that thing.' - Ah.
[expl*si*n]
Oh!
So close.
So close.
Get him out of here.
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
[indistinct chatter]
[male announcer] 'Status check. Command on intel?'
[man on radio] 'Affirmative.'
[male announcer] '...in launch condition?'
[man on radio] 'Affirmative.'
[male announcer] 'm*ssile and intel received?'
[man on radio] 'Affirmative.'
[male announcer] 'T minus 60 seconds and counting.'
[sighs]
Less than a minute to go.
She's beautiful, isn't she?
