[theme music]
[instrumental music]
Good night.
Hey, wait a minute, who owes for what?
Uh, Ruth, you paid for my tip, didn't you?
- Forget it. - 'No, I don't like that.'
Listen, we'll settle it up at the office.
It's so late now, your dad will wonder where you are.
No, he won't, he's at a meeting.
Will you go to bed?
Alright, but don't let me forget.
I won't, I promise.
Alright, good night.
Good night.
[music continues]
[music continues]
[dramatic music]
[doorbell rings]
Alright, what did I forget?
[gasps]

[music continues]
Oh, Lewis.
What's this, Sunday morning and you're not in your workshop
with your, uh, woofers and tweeters?
My high-five can wait.
Can I talk to you for a minute?
Yeah. I'll just be a second, Tory.
Alright, Lou.
What's happened?
We, uh, we got a phone call today
from Lakeford, just outside of Wilmington.
A man reports his daughter has been missing
for a little over 30 hours.
At first he figured that she had decided
to spend the weekend with her girlfriend
and then he got the phone call.
It was a male voice
lots of obscenity and threats.
He admitted kidnapping the girl
but he refused to discuss ransom.
And we found out why twenty minutes ago.
Pelham County Police in Pennsylvania
reported a couple of kids stumbled over a woman's body
just over the state line
'and the description fits Cheryl Stanford.'
- Stanford? - Yeah.
She's the daughter of the Lakeford chief of police.
Preliminary indications are that
she was not criminally assaulted.
Just, uh, taken away
from her own home in the middle of the night
driven a few miles and m*rder*d.
- No reason? - No apparent reason.
Whatever it turns out to be, the point's the same.
Kidnapper picks up policeman's daughter
he's not only saying the law's helpless
he's saying there is no law.
Who's on the case?
The SRA at Wilmington. Mr. Lee Nelson.
Lewis, I wanna get a line on this man
before the story gets to the wire services.
Now, Jim is already over there.
I want you to be with Stanford
when he identifies the body. So, um..
Yeah, well, I'll get right on it.
I'll do my best.
[instrumental music]
I'm awfully sorry.
At least I should have quit when I was ahead.
That's alright, Lou, we'll finish it another time.
[music continues]
- Lou, how are you? - How's Stanford?
Well, he's not bad. He's with some friends right now.
Took the girl's body to the morgue
in Pelham County, Pennsylvania.
Stanford will be leaving soon.
Did you find anything here?
Well, apparently, uh, somebody was waiting
in the bushes for the girl.
We found some cigarette ashes, some shoe prints
and, uh, partially burned safety match in here.
Who was the last one to see the girl? Her father?
No, uh, she went to dinner and a movie
with some girlfriends.
They drove her back here about 11:30.
The following morning the father went to the girl's room
saw the bed hadn't been slept in, so checked with her friends.
What's their story?
Well, they said that they dropped her off
saw her go inside and drove off themselves.
They didn't see or hear anything suspicious.
[door opens]
Sir, this is Inspector Erskine. He'll be in charge of the case.
- Mr. Stanford. - Inspector.
I've just been thinking, inspector
that it might not be my Cheryl down at the morgue.
No, sir, it might not be.
Shall we find out?
I guess so.
It's hard to raise a daughter alone.
You see, my wife has been dead for ten years now.
I don't know all of Cheryl's friends, she was very popular.
Did the coroner say how long she'd been dead for?
About eight hours.
She was gone before I got the call.
If it is my girl.
Yes, sir.
What sort of person would do a thing like that?
Mm-hm.
[sighs]
Well? Where do I go next?
Home.
- What? - You're rejected.
You have a solar burn in the left eye.
You, uh..
Yo-you don't understand.
H-how could I be rejected? I-I-I'm a volunteer.
I wanna get out of this country!
Wh-what'd I've to do to join the navy and see the world?
Join the merchant marine and see the world.
I'm sorry, mister. Next man--
Doctor, hey, uh..
I-I don't wanna join the merchant marine.
I-I wanna join the navy
I-I-I wanna go places
I-I wanna see, uh, things
I-I wanna--
Next man, please.
You don't understand..
Stop shoving me!
Everyone's always shoving me.
You don't understand--
Look, you might as well get lost.
[dramatic music]
Guard patrol!
Okay! Okay!
Hey..
Gotta trust to serve this nation
and you'd make federal case out of it.
[music continues]
Join the army, boys!
[instrumental music]
[exhales]
That's my daughter.
Alright, thank you, Mr. Stanford.
Inspector..
...I've been a policeman for the last 30 years
and I've known the..
...deceased for the last 20.
I'd like to sit under the case, maybe I can be of some help.
Yes, you might, and we'll very likely
be calling on you later.
But not now.
Inspector, don't you understand?
I'll, uh, I'll take you back, sir.
- Can I see her again? - Certainly.
You think of the oddest things.
Things that you weren't aware of at the time
but you wish you had been.
As a child, she..
...never liked candy.
She...she..
She was such a good little girl.
[music continues]
It's at times like this
I wish I had chosen some other profession.
Any other profession.
What's the cause of death, doctor?
Uh, .38 b*llet through the heart.
Oh, your lab man from Washington called.
Slug's being sent by courier.
Here's, uh, something else.
Her wrist were bound behind her back with that.
- Any cuts or bruises? - 'Yes.'
I wasn't gonna go into it with the father here.
But there are multiple contusions
all over her entire body.
She'd been beaten.
And she had also, apparently, been dragged by the shoulders
for a considerable distance.
There were bad scratches on her legs.
I hope, inspector, you get this particular k*ller soon.
I hope you get your wish, doctor.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[banging] Hey, anybody home?
It's locked.
[music continues]
[man on TV] 'The prime minister met privately with the president'
'in his office for 55 minutes.'
Well, the travelling salesman left town
and the farmer never knew what happened to his wagon.
[both laughing]
[man on TV] 'The presidential press secretary is expected to have'
'something to say on the subject.'
'At a meeting with the press..'
Hey, can I have some service?
'The prime minister will leave Washington..'
Or is this a cafeteria?
What'll you have?
- A beer. - Huh?
Beer, and turn that thing off, will you?
Pal, we had a party here last night.
I didn't get to bed 'til 5:30. I've got a headache.
Nothing could make me happier
than to find someone to tangle with.
So if you wanna be first in line..
This just ain't my day.
Would you give me a beer, please?
[man on TV] 'Here is Rod Patrick.'
[Rod on TV] The plague known as the Marshals Of Freedom
has returned to the Lakeford area.
Phillip Leonard Payne and his private army
have moved lock, stock and arsenal
on to the grounds of the Johannes Military Academy
vacant since the death of its founder in 1961.
'Although the rights of an American citizen'
'to purchase and possess arms'
'is not at question here.'
The right of demagogues to organize private armies
which are frequently at odds with local police
and military forces
seems highly debatable.
'To examine this particular demagogue'
'we've prepared a series of five programs'
'to air on this channel'
'beginning tonight at 8:00.'
This is Rod Patrick
reminding you to tune in for part one
of "Father Image For Misfits."
[instrumental music]
Nelson.
Did you find anything significant?
Nothing much, sir.
This book of safety matches was found under the body.
Could belong to the m*rder*r
or to the girl, or to a passer by.
- Is this where he parked? - Yes, sir.
Indications are that he forced the girl up this path.
What about tire impressions?
Nothing clear enough to use.
He took the trouble to brush out any marks he made.
- Where was the body found? - I'll show you, sir.
[birds chirping]
The girl evidently walked into this area at gunpoint.
Then here she either fell or was struck down.
She was dragged to this point.
She was apparently still putting up quite a struggle.
He stopped here, and from the amount of blood
we found on the ground, this is where the sh**ting occurred.
And he made no attempt to bury the body
and destroy any evidence?
None, except for the tire marks he rubbed out.
Strange mixture.
He's savage, he's violent
and...occasionally cautious.
Where do we look for that combination?
[instrumental music]
Hey, I-I-I'd like to talk to you.
Come on, hurry up.
This is private property.
Uh. Why, that's, uh that's quite a uniform.
What do you want?
Uh, well, I'd-I'd, I'd like to talk to somebody
about, uh, joining the Marshals.
You'll have to talk to Commander Payne.
Yeah, fine.
You'll have to pay for your uniform
and buy your own g*n.
[chuckles]
But I've got a g*n.
.38 special.
[instrument music]
[theme music]
Lewis.
I know, I know.
"Where is he? What's happening?"
Alright, then. Where is he? And what's happening?
Nothing. Tch.
Art, I can't remember a case I wanted to break so badly
or run into more blind alleys.
Girl was taken out on her own door step
a thickly populated residential area
and not a soul saw or heard anything.
We have a m*rder b*llet, very clear markings
not a single lead on the weapon.
What about the match you've mentioned in your report?
Well, I'm on my way to the lab now.
They may have a tie-up between the match and the photo
but there are no prints in the folder.
Not even any advertising
that might give us a clue to the location.
Anyway, I'll drop by your office with a full report.
Alright.
[instrumental music]
I'll say the match found in the Stanford shrubbery
definitely came from the book picked up
at the scene of the m*rder, inspector.
Let me see that match a minute, would you?
Thank you.
What about the direction of the tear?
Looks to me as though the subject
might have been left-handed.
Very likely, yes, sir.
What's this?
It's a lab report on the material
used to tie the girl's hands.
It's doorbell wire wound with cotton
and then twisted shut.
There was a minute amount of dirt in the insulation.
Minute amount?
Yeah, that's what the examiners said, yes, sir.
The insulation should have been packed with dirt.
The girl was dragged on her back for several feet.
Where are the pictures of the body?
Mr. Ward's office.
Let's see if you can reach the Pelham County coroner
from here. I'll leave without you.
And bring me the enlargements of the drag area.
Yes, sir.
[instrument music]
Thank you, uh, Harman was it?
Hillman, sir, Hillman.
Oh, yes. Well, Private Hillman
how have you been getting along?
Oh, fine. Just fine, sir.
No complaints about the Spartan life here?
No, no, I-I like it fine.
Hey, will you excuse me, i-it's my turn.
All that vitality.
New blood, Carey
that's what this organization needs.
You don't find him a little c*ck?
c*ck?
Refreshing.
With a thousands recruits like that I could..
- Hey, baby. - Come on..
[indistinct chatter]
Come on, come on. Hit up.
What's happening to the majority of Americans, Carey?
So soft, and concerned.
Can't they see what's happening to the race?
[indistinct chatter]
Now, we work so hard..
...and make so little headway.
Sometimes I wonder whether it's worth the struggle.
Don't you think every leader's felt that way, Phil
before his revolution?
[grunting]
- He's k*lling him. Come on. - Hey.
[dramatic music]
[male #1] 'Let up, man.'
'Hey, let up.'
That's enough. That's enough!
Hillman, that was vey good.
But it's enough...for now.
Ooh.
Now, from the photographs, doctor
it seems to me as if the wire had been wound fairly tightly
around her wrist and yet the color of the flesh
both above and below the wire was roughly the same.
Roughly. Yes, I see what you're suggesting, inspector.
As a matter of fact, I expected to note that in my report.
Under the circumstances, the hands should have been
cyanotic, blue in color.
With the wire bound that tightly the blood below the wrist
would've stagnated almost immediately after she was shot.
Then presumably the wire wasn't tied around her wrists
until after she was dead.
Pointless as it seems, apparently, that's true.
Alright, sir. Thank you very much.
- Let me see one of those. - Hm.
What are you tryin' to say, Lewis?
That the girl's hands were not secured at all
before she was k*lled?
I think I'm trying to say
that they may have been secured with something else first.
- Rope? - No.
Look here. Rope wouldn't have done that.
The dirt's been gouged out in a double track.
Something metallic, tied around each wrist.
Something that could've identified him.
So he took it off.
Then he k*lled her, and then when he noticed
how badly bruised the wrists were
he retied them with a wire
so that would account for the chafed skin.
Something metallic.
What do you mean? Handcuffs?
We, uh, couldn't be looking
for one of Stanford's own patrolmen, could we?
[instrumental music]
[Rod on TV] 'But the important and difficult thing to realize here'
'is that Philip Leonard Payne'
'and his followers are in deadly earnest.'
They wear uniforms, not clown costumes.
They carry g*ns, not cat pistols.
They preach hatred, not Americanism.
'They are revolutionaries'
'as surely as Mussolini's black shirts..'
No, leave it.
Let's never be afraid to study the face of the enemy, Hillman.
It isn't Medusa, it's just Mr. Patrick.
Yes, sir.
I was wondering why you weren't at mess
with the rest of the men?
Oh, uh, sir I-I wasn't hungry.
Uh, tired after your workout?
Yeah, I-I was kinda keyed up and..
I, uh, I-I wanna apologize for getting a little out of hand
out there on the field.
You don't have to apologize.
Movements like ours could never get off the ground
without soldiers like you, Hillman.
[chuckles]
We'd just hate to see your energies misdirected.
You don't wanna cr*pple our whole army
even before we have a chance to march, do you?
[no audio]
There's the type of man
you should practice your judo on.
'Parents are Irish immigrants.'
Why can't people learn to stay in their own backyard?
I'd like to have Patrick and his whole family..
...deported.
Family?
Six sons. Can you believe it?
Any daughters?
One, 18.
Very pretty too.
What were you thinking of, Hillman?
Infiltrating the enemy camp by marrying the girl?
Yes, something like that.
[instrumental music]
[theme music]
So, it all boils down to a question
of what do you do with your time?
How to get from one sleeping pill to the next?
Thank you.
I'd rather work than stay at home, so, uh..
Now, what was it you wanted me to check on?
Any recent dismissals or suspensions?
Oh, yes.
Inspector, uh...I don't like to, uh...tell you
you don't know your business but when you come
to my office looking for a kidnapper..
We're looking for a man who might have
borne you a grudge, Mr. Stanford
Well, why aren't you looking for a man that might have
borne my daughter a grudge?
We have been.
Well, apparently, Cheryl was very well-liked, sir.
No problems with the office, no rejected boyfriends.
Nothing like that.
Oh, senseless. Senseless.
If the man hated me, why didn't he come and attack me?
Would that have hurt you as much?
No.
Anything else would've been done with by now but this..
This is like a horror story that I have to sit through
over and over again.
And the fantasies..
I used to pitch a whole game of ball in my mind
to get myself asleep at night.
Now, I k*ll this man.
I can't see his face.
But I can feel my hands around his throat.
I hear his neck snap.
Oh, yes, um..
Ahem, there were two cases of disciplinary action taken
during the last six months.
Both men were back on duty the night of the m*rder.
Both can be accounted for during the entire time in question.
No other suspensions, no dismissal...unless, uh..
Unless what?
I was just going to say unless you consider
an application turn down a dismissal.
That depends on how the applicant felt about it.
Well, he was extremely upset.
He had brought along his own handcuffs and g*n.
- May I? - Yeah.
Just, uh, why was he turned down, sir?
[John] 'Well, he failed the eye examination.'
He asked to see me about it.
He placed very well on both the oral and the written exams.
I gave an interview and I told him
we couldn't make exceptions.
What was his reaction to that?
He accused me of personal bias and, uh, he shouted.
- Threats? - Yes.
Do you remember if he smoked?
Yes, he did.
You didn't notice if he was left handed?
Left handed?
No I, I can't remember.
Name?
Dale Vernon Hillman.
Oh, yes, that's Dale.
He did live here, but he don't anymore.
He is the sweetest boy.
He's all alone in the world, you know.
Used to call me mom.
When did he move, Mrs. Gibbons?
[Mrs. Gibbons] 'Well, he come by yesterday to get his clothes.'
He said he'd joined the army and I told him
I said, "Now, Dale, don't you let 'em send you to Vietnam."
And I guess he laid down the law
'cause I heard he's servin' right here in Lakeford.
Here, ma'am?
Yes, at the, um
Johannes, uh, Military Academy.
It's on Fairfield Road.
- He told you that? - No.
Commander Somebody called to ask
if they could help him transfer his things.
'I thought that was nice.'
- Well, thank you, Mrs. Gibbons. - 'Oh, you're welcome.'
'You know, it seems like'
'everybody's trying to find Dale these days.'
A man named, uh, Stanford called just before you two drove up.
- Thank you. - You're welcome.
Say..
You know, Dale isn't my real son
but do you think it'd be alright
if I'd put a star on the window anyway?
[instrumental music]
Stanford's not in his office.
He didn't tell anybody where he was going.
- Did you try his home? - No answer.
- Fairfield Road. - Right.
[engine starts]
[music continues]
[g*nsh*t]
Better.
Thank you, sir.
[music continues]
Inspector, what brings you out here?
Same thing that brought you. Curiosity.
Wouldn't you know that's where our boy would hole up?
- Mr. Stanford-- - Inspector, I wish you'd relax.
I don't intend to k*ll him.
I just wanna pick him up when he walks out
and ask him a few questions.
'Or don't you approve of that?'
Not at this stage.
Why not at this stage?
Because, if he's innocent, you'll be wasting your time.
And if he's not, you'd be giving him a chance
to get rid of his handcuffs and g*n.
But, inspector, I've got to talk to him.
As a policeman? Or as Cheryl Stanford's father?
What do you want me to do, step out of the case?
- Yes. - 'I won't.'
I've already told you
I've been a policeman for 30 years.
I'm not about to crack up just because..
And, you know, kidnapping is a crime
even in Lakeford, inspector.
'I have as much right in this case as you do.'
I know that.
Alright, what, um..
...what would be the FBI's approach?
Well, we'd try to establish or eliminate
a ballistics connection between Hillman's g*n
and the m*rder b*llet.
But how? You don't have enough
for a search and seizure warrant.
You'd have to pick up the g*n before--
Not the g*n itself, there's still the b*llet
fired from the g*n.
Dig one out of the target?
Mm-hmm.
You've still got those gates to get through.
'Phil Payne is not about to put out the red carpet'
'for an FBI man or any legally constituted law officer.'
When is the next public rally?
Same time as my girl's funeral.
[instrumental music]
[Philip] 'Of course, keep it up.'
'Close your ears to the truth.'
Shout down the facts.
I'm used to the ignorance
of the great and worst American public.
I know an organized clack when I hear it
and I know who organized this clack.
The sainted Mr. Rod Patrick!
Yeah, there you go! There's an American for you.
Yeah! Patrick! Yeah!
What's the matter with you, bud?
Cat got your tongue?
Why don't you close that big mouth of yours
and listen to what the commander has to say?
You might even learn something.
What are you, some kind of a n*zi?
No, my fat headed friend.
He's some kind of a patriot.
'And I suggest you take your hands off him before..'
[booing]
Let them go.
They're only three to one against us.
You sound like a fighter.
What are you?
I can use fighters in my organization.
Ever thought of joining me?
That an invitation?
Buy your own uniform, bring your own g*n. Agreed?
Agreed.
[instrumental music]
[dramatic music]
Come in.
At ease.
Another new roommate for you, private.
Uh, John Lewis. Dale Hillman.
W-well, welcome to this place.
Hillman.
I think this bunk over here is still available.
Uh, you'll find pillows, sheets and blankets
in that closet over you.
Right.
Oh, Lewis.
That's "Yes, sir."
Yes, sir.
Uh, dinner's in an hour, I'll see you in the mess hall.
Well, if there's still time, I'd like to practice
out in the range a little bit.
Well, I think that can wait until tomorrow, Lewis. Can't it?
Well, uh..
Tomorrow.
Whoo.
What are you bucking for?
Private eager beaver, first class.
Let's see now, Hillman.
You're the one who can do just about everything
but sh**t straight.
Yeah, Phil and I were talking about it on the way in.
Phil and you.
Yeah, does that bother you, private?
What are you bucking for?
Apple polisher first class?
Oh..
'What did he say about my shootin'?'
He said you sh**t high into the left.
I used to be an instructor. I said I'd try to help you.
Oh-h*.
Is that right?
Yeah. What kind of a g*n do you use?
- .38 special. - Well, it's still light.
Why don't you show me where the range is?
Commander said we should wait until tomorrow.
And you always do what the commander says.
Hm.
Give me the g*n.
Are you afraid?
You know, when I first got here
I had to straighten out the boys, uh, on rank, you know.
I mean, first, there's the commander, right?
And then there's the adjutant, Carey.
And then there's me.
'And all the way down at the end of the line'
'there's the newest recruit..'
[clicks]
...you.
And the newest recruit ain't gonna teach me anything.
You understand?
Just say, "Yes, sir."
You won't pull that trigger, Hillman.
Why do you say that?
Because you're not a good enough shot.
You might hit me.
And then you wouldn't even be Private Hillman.
[g*nsh*t]
Oops.
High into the left.
My same old problem.
What did I do wrong, instructor?
Well..
What happened?
Well, it, uh, it was an accident, sir.
I, I didn't know my g*n was loaded.
I hope I didn't frighten you, private.
I'll talk to you later, Hillman.
Dismissed!
Yes, sir.
I'll see you.
I repeat, dismissed!
Well, you've had a rough indoctrination
into our little group, Lewis.
'I apologize.'
This is a dangerous man, commander.
Yes. But that's his value.
I need more men like him.
I need people to listen to me.
People are listening.
I hope so. Uh, let's go to dinner.
Well, I, uh, I thought I'd go home, get a few things
if you don't mind.
Oh. Of course.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
Any luck?
Are you sure it's from his g*n?
I'm sure.
How will you and I keep in touch?
[Lewis] 'There's an extension in the dormitory.'
If ballistics comes up with a match
you'll be Jones' TV.
If not, Smith's market.
It will match.
[Lewis] 'Incidentally, Hillman's been showing'
'a good deal of interest in Rod Patrick's daughter.'
Brought a copy of this paper on the way over.
'Hillman had cut out that article.'
Well, you don't blast Payne's outfit
without making a few waves.
You think he might try paying her a call, inspector?
Maybe I ought to post a couple of men out there just in case.
Even if the b*ll*ts match, Mr. Stanford
he deserves a chance to surrender.
Of course.
Tell firearms I'll need an answer as soon as possible.
Yes, sir.
[instrumental music]
[engine starts]
[music continues]
It's a match. You've got your m*rder weapon.
Good.
Uh, hello, get me Lakeford, Delaware, 5-5-5-8-0-1-7.
[instrumental music on TV]
Those kids. They really know how to dance, huh?
Yeah.
[phone rings]
Hello.
Yeah.
- Is this Jones' TV? - Huh?
The Jones' TV?
Uh, look, lo-look it up again, ask the operator.
[sighs]
Who was that?
Wrong number.
What did they want?
I don't know, some, uh, some television outfit.
Where's Hillman?
Look, what's the difference?
Now will you watch the television
or get out of here?
[music continues on TV]
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
Hillman!
[music continues]
Al-right!
Don't sh**t. Look.
[dramatic music]
[clicks]
Take that g*n out of the belt and drop it to the ground.
[female #1] 'What's going on out there?'
You people stay in that house.
The right hand.
FBI, Hillman. Do as he says.
[dramatic music]
Don't use it.
You think.
[instrumental music]
Now, what will the charge be?
Carrying a concealed weapon or kidnapping?
Kidnapping and m*rder.
You can tie him into the weapon now.
What do you think he'll get?
Twenty years? Life? The gallows?
It's up to the people.
Yeah.
The people.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
Lewis, you look pretty good out there.
Arthur. Bring your tennis shoes, I'll take you on.
[chuckles]
Yeah, I talked to the US attorney.
He wanted me to thank you
for digging that b*llet out of the door.
