[male narrator] "The FBI."

A Quinn Martin, Warner Brothers production.

Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring, Philip Abbott..

Stephen Brooks.

With guest stars, Philip Ahn..

Benson Fong..

Keye Luke.

And special guest star

Charles Aidman.

Tonight's episode, "The Hiding Place."

[instrumental music]

- Mr. Ward. - Hello, Rhodes.

What's this all about, Art?

Something I wanna show you.

But before I, uh, run these pictures

uh, I wanna fill you in on some background.

Jean, hold my calls, please. No interruptions.

There was a...hit-and-run case in Oregon last week.

Little, uh, all-Nisei truck farming community

in the Willamette Valley.

Um, sit down, gentlemen. Uh, cigarette?

Yeah.

- Lou. - Thank you.

- Uh, all-Nisei? - Yeah.

American-born Japanese, who went back to the West Coast

after the w*r

formed a new community.

They call it Green Haven.

[Arthur] 'This hit-and-run took place just a few miles'

'outside of town.'

Their chief of police sent us a hubcap

bearing a set of fingerprints for a routine check.

Only seven of 'em were clear, but, uh--

"Routine?" Just seven?

Well, you know how it is

with the Identification division, Lewis.

Miracles take a little bit longer

that's all.

[Arthur] And there were some usual patterns.

Which is where these pictures come in.

It consist of army filmed interviews

of American survivors of the Bataan Death March

who were later held c*ptive

in a Japanese POW camp on Luzon.

There's a definite connection with the hit-and-run case.

[whirring]

These films were taken on the day

the prisoners were liberated.

'You'll notice there's one name repeated over and over.'

[male #1] 'And on the March Bataan, uh, corporal'

'were you given adequate rations?'

We didn't get any food at all for five days, sir.

Not only that..

...but this dirty louse Fujita

this three-star private

he took every drop of water that we had

and he gave it to his horse.

And when my buddies spoke up

he, uh..

he ran a bayonet through 'em.

[male #1] 'Around the camp, uh, what did you actually do?'

As a commissioned officer

I was...I was given charge

of the camp's work details.

My men were sick

sick and under-nursed

but when they didn't do enough work

Fujita cut the rations even lower.

According, according to the articles

I filed a written protest.

'That you wrote yourself?'

Fujita tore it up..

...and beat me

beat me till I started to bleed

and threw me into a pond crawling with leeches.

It would take too long to show you the whole reel.

Most of these men are dead now, or dropped out of sight.

But the next one I want you to see.

Eric Delbey, private first class.

Um, middle of the night, middle of the day, uh..

uh, he yelled, uh, "Caddie, bring me my mashie.

Or driver, or niblick.."

Or whatever came in his mind.

Uh, like it was some kind of a joke between us

or, uh, showing off, uh, how good he could talk American

uh, anyway, wha-what he meant was this, uh, golf club

with the head gone.

Wha-wha-what he would do is

he would, uh, hide it around the compound

and if I found it quick

uh, he'll only whack me a couple of times with it

but, uh...if I was too long

uh, if he thought I was too long..

[sobbing]

if-if-if I was...t-too long..

Oh-oh, sorry, sir.

Uh, w-what I, uh..

m-m-meant that

w-when I found it, he, he-he'd beat me with it.

One time he beat me with..

[gasping]

You blinded me, Fujita!

'I'm gonna, I'm gonna find you, Lardface!'

'I'm gonna find you!'

[instrumental music]

Is, uh, Eric Delbey still alive, Mr. Ward?

In a way, yes.

He lives in San Francisco with his brother

when he isn't in and out of veterans hospitals

and psychiatric clinics.

He is still blind.

This, um..

...Lardface, Art

isn't he a Nisei..

...born in Ohio?

That's right.

Toledo.

"Sentenced to ten years for armed robbery.

"1940, escaped.

"Signed on a pacific tanker

"jumped ship at Yokohama

"just before Pearl Harbor.

'"Turned up next in the Japanese army'

'"on Luzon.'

"Vanished when we retook the Philippines.

Never renounced his American citizenship."

File's still open on him.

Charge, treason.

Which brings us back to the hit-and-run case.

The driver is still at large.

You two are gonna go out there under the cover

of insurance investigators and find him.

Fujita?

The fingerprints were his.

[instrumental music]

It's been a week, Henry, and that's long enough.

I'm not just speaking for my student body

I'm speaking for the whole community.

Whoever he is, we want the driver who hit Danny Takata.

Otherwise, what?

A new chief?

Well, you said it, I didn't.

Maybe what this town really needs

is a new word for "Chief," George.

Maybe calling the only man on the force "Chief"

makes people expect too much.

They expect what you've always given them.

When we all came out here as strangers

starting a new town

you were chosen to furnish law enforcement and protection.

'You're not just a police chief, Nakamura.'

'To those kids and their parents'

'you've become a symbol.'

A father image.

Live up to it.

In their frame of reference "Chief" used to equate

with "Dependable."

Used to.

I'm sorry, but it's no time to pull punches.

No.

We've known each other too long for that.

I just didn't realize

you were with the boys who want my scalp.

We don't want your scalp, Henry.

We want action.

Danny's friends and classmates out there

have a right to know what progress you're making

if any.

What do I tell them? And what do you tell them?

I'm not obliged to tell anybody anything

until I'm ready to.

But I guess those kids are sort of special.

Boys..

your principal has just told me where you stand

and I'm gonna make it just as plain

where I stand.

"Stand," Mr. Nakamura?

There's rumors you're just sitting.

Ben!

I'm sorry, sir.

It's alright, George.

Long as they remember

Danny Takata's...my friend

as well as theirs.

'In fact, I've always considered everybody in Green Haven'

as my friend.

And it isn't easy to think

that one of the friends I trusted

is a hit-and-runner.

Facing up to that is just as tough

as having to track him down

and it's going to take time.

Well, would you like a vote of confidence too, sir

while Danny's in the hospital fighting for his life?

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Why don't you go home and get some sleep, Ruth?

Your brother won't need anything for a while.

I'm not tired.

Are you sure he's gonna be alright, Dr. Shigetsu?

[knock at door]

Come in.

[Henry] 'Ruth, Leonard.'

Get out!

'Get out!'

Make him get out of here.

- Get out! Get out! - Ruth.

Don't you know what a spark will do

in a room full of oxygen?

- You wanna k*ll my brother? - The pipe isn't lit.

Honey, you've known me all your life.

You know I don't smoke.

I just carry the pipe out of habit.

That's right.

Like your badge, out of habit.

You don't smoke

and you don't arrest hit-and-run drivers.

Ruth, that's enough.

I'll be back in a moment.

Henry.

[instrumental music]

You got to understand, Henry

she's close to the breaking point.

I can hardly get her out of that room

to go home for her meals.

She keeps hoping that he will be able to tell her

who hit him when he comes around

if he comes around.

We all hope for that, Leonard.

Meaning you've got nothing else to go on?

Now, don't you start.

I'm sorry, Henry.

Oh, forget it.

I just dropped by to see how the boy was doing.

There's no change.

He has to make it.

Everybody is praying that he will, including me.

Well, it can't hurt to pray.

Although, I prefer to put my faith Materia Medica.

You know, Henry, I've always said

that every man is entitled to his own beliefs

but have you ever considered how it sits with your patients

the way you parade this atheism of yours?

But have you considered it keeps them from putting me

on too high a pedestal?

Now, being the only doctor in town

is like being the...only policeman.

It's a lot to live up to.

The times we fail it gets rough.

I'll call you as soon as the boy comes around.

Goodbye, Henry.

[instrumental music]

Pop.

Hi, Ken, Joe.

I wonder if our chief of police

has caught any hit-and-run drivers lately.

Joe, you--

I'll pick up my order later, Ken.

Right now, I'd like a little fresh air.

Alright, Mr. Sakanishi!

I've had about enough.

Henry.

Sorry, Joe.

I didn't..

[instrumental music]

This is my town.

I just don't understand what's happening to everybody.

I know these people too well.

Hit-and-run is bad enough

but treason in Green Haven?

No, Inspector Erskine, not in my town.

I admire your loyalty.

But the prints of Fujita's.. He's here.

Uh, here's our cover, chief.

Insurance adjusters investigating the case.

Okay?

Not okay.

You see the pressure got so bad on me today, I, uh..

You what, Mr. Nakamura?

Well, I let it slip out

that I was getting help from the FBI.

I made a fingerprint report

but I made it sound like more than that.

Me...big shot.

'So your cover's no good.'

Green Haven is gonna guess who you are.

Guess?

They'll know.

Including Fujita.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

You have any further question, inspector?

Just one or two that I didn't wanna ask

in front of the boy's sister.

Well, understand, doctor, I'm not questioning

your competence, but, uh..

'...when a patient remains unconscious this long'

isn't it customary to bring another doctor in

for consultation?

I did, Bill Lin from over in Salem.

'We discussed surgical intervention'

to relieve the intracranial pressure

but we decided it's much safer to wait.

If and when the boy regains consciousness

is he likely to have a clear recollection of the accident?

[chuckles]

I couldn't prognose that

if I were the hit-and-run driver myself.

Are you, doctor?

Would I tell you if I were?

No.

I'm just a backwards GP

Ohio State, Harvard Medical.

Back home to Toledo to establish a practice

but a federal fugitive I'm not.

Federal fugitive, doctor?

Oh, come now, inspector.

Your FBI status is known all over town.

Word travels fast.

It sure does.

The FBI wouldn't have jurisdiction here

unless the hit-and-runner is wanted by Uncle Sam.

Everybody's got that figured out.

[instrumental music]

It's a good team they have.

Nobody has left Green Haven since the accident.

Now nobody will dare to.

It would be a dead giveaway

and yet..

And yet what?

Mr. Erskine..

how could we have a traitor here

and not suspect it?

We're almost like one big family.

That may be true, but you were mostly strangers

to each other in 1947 when you founded Green Haven.

Fujita could easily have joined you

and lived here ever since under false credentials.

Alright.

Then let's fingerprint every man in the area

anywhere near his age.

I could round them up in less than 24 hours.

The FBI doesn't employ those methods, Mr. Nakamura.

No mass fingerprinting.

How about the prisoners Fujita mistreated?

You could bring one here and have him identify him.

Well, I've checked their availability.

They're mostly dead and... the others I couldn't contact.

There is one I could call on, but I-I'd hate to.

He's, uh, he's blind, and a borderline psychotic.

Getting that close to Fujita might push him over the edge.

I see.

You'd sooner let Green Haven go to pieces.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[car honk tooting]

I straightened it up, might be a month

before the county got around to it.

Joe Sakanishi.

Inspector Erskine, FBI.

Joe owns all the land right in this area.

Three sections.

He gets a little impatient with public servants.

Mr. Erskine wanted to see

where the hit-and-run happened, Joe.

The town's more interested in who, Mr. Erskine, not where.

So are we, Mr. Sakanishi.

But sometimes, one leads to the other.

What knocked it crooked, the accident?

I wouldn't know.

I wasn't here.

But I hope you find out more about it

than we have up to now.

[instrumental music]

[engine revving]

This is where I found Danny Takata's hot rod.

Right in here.

[instrumental music]

Well, I went over every inch of this car, Lou.

There are no dents, no scratches

no paint transfers.

Whoever hit that boy didn't hit his car.

Well, something knocked it off its track

or else the jack would..

Wait a minute.

If the jack was here

the handle extended out to here.

The other car could have come along and...flipped it.

- Did you examine the handle? - There's nothing to examine.

- There is no jack. - There was.

- Hold it, Ben. - Oh, pop.

Look, I just remembered Mr. Himata--

Don't kid me, son, the jack to Danny's car--

How come every time something happens, you alway--

Just give me a yes or no, did you take it?

Okay, okay, big deal.

I'll see you in the office.

Mr. Erskine.

Thank you.

[instrumental music]

Uh-huh.

There's our paint transfer.

Get this to the laboratory as soon as possible, Jim.

Yes, sir.

There can't be many cars like this in Green Haven.

Finding it should be routine.

Now, Lewis..

we've waited 20 years for this sadistic maniac.

Let's not lose him now.

'You write down the car's description?'

Yes, Arthur, green 1961 Ford.

That's it.

[instrumental music]

Mr. Yamada!

[dramatic music]

They found Fujita.

Know who they arrested? Our high school principal.

And he's the traitor.

He's Lardface Fujita.

I was...drinking.

It's no use, I can't hide it anymore.

I've been a solitary drinker for years.

It's an escape.

So you get drunk and you drive.

Henry, I swear it's the first time I ever did.

[music continues]

Mr. Osaki!

Did you know Mr. Yamada is Fujita?

I was...driving too fast.

I saw Danny and I tried to swerve, but..

After I hit him, I...panicked and I...drove away.

Are you claiming you didn't stop?

I didn't even...slow down.

Can't you understand?

My career, my whole life

would be over if the truth got out.

And teaching is my life.

Teaching and helping kids to grow up to be responsible.

Don't you understand, Henry?

Wipe the black off.

Would you like to talk about your w*r experience?

But I keep telling you.

How many times must I say it? I'm not Fujita!

I-I'm not Fujita!

I'll take care of him.

[intense music]

[crowd chattering]

[music continues]

I'm not Fujita.

Alright, hold it. Let the police handle this.

- Alright, George. - Be sensible.

- Think a minute. - Let's get inside.

Don't let them hang me.

They say I'm a traitor.

Lardface Fujita. It's a lie!

'You all know me, I-I'm your friend.'

Yamada..

Punish me for Danny Takata, I've got that coming

but don't let them hang me for treason.

Nobody's gonna hang you.

Now, this man is the hit-and-run driver

but his fingerprints, and I've just finished checking them

prove he's not the man we're looking for.

Fujita is still loose.

[instrumental music]

George...follow me.

[music continues]

Lou, what happened?

They were Fujita's prints.

He must have come along after Yamada hit the boy.

What, Fujita?

Fujita wouldn't stop to help his mother.

He's been here 20 years

he's made friends

sees a boy lying hurt

goes back to check..

Realizes that he might be charged with a hit-and-run.

Investigated.

Starts to run

trips..

[thump]

Yeah.

Which one?

[instrumental music]

Danny.

Hi, sis.

Oh, Danny.

Danny.

[music continues]

Operator.

Operator, is that you, Betty?

This is Ruth. Ruth at the hospital.

Betty, help me, I've got to find Dr. Shigetsu.

Righto, Betty, will do.

Say, if you see Doc Shigetsu

tell him to rush over to the hospital right away.

Danny Takata's coming around.

[dramatic music]

Ben, Ben, spread the word

Shigetsu is wanted at the hospital.

Danny's snapping out of it.

We'll get right over.

It's Ruth Takata.

Her brother's regaining consciousness.

- Leave a note to Nakamura. - Yeah.

[instrumental music]

Is the doctor here yet, Takata?

No, I haven't been able to reach him.

Hurry, please!

[intense music]

[expl*si*n]

[screaming]

[instrumental music]

I know when I've had it, Mr. Rhodes.

Not one customer has been in here

since I tried to talk those fools

out of mob violence, not one.

All it got me was on the hate-list.

No, I wouldn't say hate, Mr. Torii.

Embarrassed might be closer.

Even ashamed.

You embarrass a man, and he dislikes you for a while

shame him

and he hates you forever.

Care for a cold drink?

- No, thank you. - Mm.

Suspicion's part of it too.

Finding out it was the second man's

fingerprints on that hubcap.

A man wanted for treason

knowing he's one of us

knowing he might strike again.

Danny must have still been conscious

when Fujita stopped, huh?

He must have been afraid Danny had seen him.

- Mm-hmm. - Well..

Why didn't he try to finish the job right then and there?

Maybe he did.

Some of the head injuries might have come

after the accident.

I keep wondering who would be capable of k*lling

a nice kid like Danny.

[tires screeching]

Uh-oh. What do you suppose they're up to?

[horn blaring]

Well, well, well.

- Hello there, Mr. Torii. - Ben.

Something you fellas want?

Nah, the, uh..

sign says you're going out of business.

So we didn't think you would mind us camping here

long as we're not keeping any customers out.

[blows]

Be my guest.

[all laughing]

We'll be back, huh, fellas?

- He did invite us. - He did.

[tires screeching]

What was that all about?

I don't know.

Nothing, I guess.

[sighs]

And yet I have the idea

they were more than just needling me.

They were looking at me like I was guilty of..

Aah, what am I talking about?

I guess that's the real reason

I'm pulling out, I've got the contagion too.

Green Haven just isn't healthy anymore.

People avoiding people

everybody suspecting everybody else

of being Fujita.

I wish that fizz water went back in the bottle.

Oh, when you do leave, sir

we'll want to know where.

- You will. - Thank you.

I might even come back if you ever catch Lardface.

[instrumental music]

Please sit down.

He'll be caught, Ms. Takata.

Promises.

My brother is dead, and you give me promises.

I'll give you some advice too.

Get out of Green Haven until this is over.

Me, get out of Green Haven?

For your own safety.

Whoever this Fujita is

he may get the idea your brother told you something

before the expl*si*n.

And you want me to run?

Oh, no, Mr. Erskine.

That's all the more reason why I should stay.

Maybe that'll bring him out in the open.

Maybe that's the way to trap him.

No, he's shown he's too clever for that.

I wouldn't allow it anyway.

Are you sure you just don't wanna get rid of me

so I won't nag you about Danny's m*rder?

I know how you feel, Ms. Takata.

I have a daughter of my own.

How sweet.

Only you'd be doing something about it

if she lost someone she loved.

She did.

- Her mother. - Never mind, Jim.

I'm sorry.

[sighs]

But when I think of Danny dead

and that Henry Nakamura not even trying to--

He-he's trying, Ms. Takata.

We're all trying. Nakamura's a good man.

Is he?

Has it ever occurred to you

that he might be the man he pretends to be looking for?

Skip that snow-job.

You were talking up a storm with the G-man.

What about?

Get out of here.

Oh, come on, don't be like that.

Save yourself some trouble

and let's have the moment of truth.

Now, what were you doing, Fujita?

Covering up for yourself by pointing your finger

at somebody else?

Yeah, like my dad, maybe, huh?

What gave you that idea?

Me.

I wouldn't put it past you, Fujita.

If you call me that again--

Do you like Lardface better?

Do you?

Going somewhere?

You'll only get tagged up.

Okay, fellas, let's show Fujita

how Americans feel about treason?

[whistles]

No, no.

[whistling]

Stop it, stop it!

[whistling]

[clattering]

N-no!

No!

[Ken screaming]

[glass shatters]

[clattering]

[g*nshots]

[dramatic music]

Hold it.

Lay it down.

[music continues]

Now.

Don't worry.

I just put a few in the ceiling

to...let them know it was loaded.

[instrumental music]

It's harmless.

Alright, boys.

Just for the record.

In case you still think I'm Lardface Fujita.

This is the United States Army distinguished Service Cross.

My own division commander pinned it on me himself

'and this is the first time I have ever shown it.'

Now, how about you heroes

cleaning up your mess?

- Yes. - Yes, Mr. Torii.

No, stop.

Did you start this, boy?

Yes.

I figured I'd take suspicion off, off of pop if I--

Do you think I'm Fujita?

You tell me.

Neighbor against neighbor

even son against father.

Now, will you see it my way and fingerprint everyone?

- Mr. Nakamura, I don't know-- - Okay.

I'm not under your jurisdiction.

If you want me, try the railroad station

just before sunset.

[instrumental music]

Where can I find Chief Nakamura?

At the fingerprinting table, Inspector Erskine.

You can't miss him.

I told you there'd be no mass fingerprinting

Mr. Nakamura.

And I told you that I'm not under your jurisdiction.

It isn't really mass fingerprinting

anyhow, inspector.

The majority turned in documents

old driver's licenses

anything with prints already on them.

We're just trying to check the ones within Haven.

[crowd clamoring]

Lock him up! He's Fujita!

He wouldn't swear he wasn't.

He didn't wanna be fingerprinted.

[clamoring continues]

Quiet!

You have to be, all of you!

Is this what you wanna be remembered for?

'Is this what you want the rest of the country'

'to think of Green Haven?'

A bunch of savages without any semblance of law and order.

You say Dr. Shigetsu refused to swear an oath.

How could you expect him to swear to God

when he doesn't believe in God?

Now, you may not agree with him

I don't agree with him either

'but that doesn't give me the right to force him'

'to do things according to my beliefs.'

And it doesn't give you the right!

It's no problem to check the records of a physician.

At the time Fujita was committing treason

Dr. Leonard Shigetsu was an American prisoner of w*r

in Italy.

He was in a concentration camp for two years.

Now, why don't the lot of you go home and stay there?

[instrumental music]

If you ever need a doctor, I'll give you a discount.

Would that be ethical?

[music continues]

Alright, Mr. Nakamura, you got your way with the fingerprints.

Let's go to work on 'em.

[music continues]

[sighs]

Oh, boy, these all night sessions are rough on the eyes.

And nothing to show for this one but...daylight.

Well, if Fujita does live in Green Haven

he's using another man's records and prints.

Prints.

I wish I'd never sent Fujita's to you in the first place.

Look, what you've done to my town.

He's done it, Mr. Nakamura.

Then get him.

Do something.

Stop all this, this horror.

Who are you calling, Lou?

San Francisco office.

The address of former PFC Eric Delbey.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

I wish we didn't need your brother's help, Mr. Delbey.

Yeah.

It was needed when he enlisted too.

Now, uh, you wanna bring all that back?

No.

Let me talk to him.

I said no.

We're...not really being overprotective, Mr. Erskine.

Eric's doctors told us never even to mention

his prisoner of w*r days.

It's bad enough that he has to carry that memory around

in his hands that..

...thing he uses for a cane.

Norma..

we've explained enough.

You're wasting your time.

I'm sorry.

That won't punish Fujita for what he did to your brother.

I don't wanna hear it.

He may have k*lled a teenage boy.

The same as he k*lled, who knows

how many American prisoners of w*r?

Help us, Mr. Delbey.

No. I..

I won't let you wreck what's left of my brother's sanity.

Isn't that my gamble, Frank?

[Norma] 'Eric..'

My gamble.

[Frank] Eric.

No matter what you heard

you just don't understand, what you don't realize--

I don't understand, you don't understand..

This is what's kept me going all these years.

It's what I've been hoping for, Frank, it's the jackpot.

I prayed I'd hear that voice again.

Fujita's voice.

Kenjiro Fujita.

Lardface.

- Mister.. - I'm over here.

I thank you, mister.

Uh, how do we go about it?

Uh, it's been 20 years.

If he, uh, sees me and disguises his voice

I'll never be able to identify him.

He won't see you.

There'll be a town meeting, you'll be in another room.

If you hear anything that seems familiar

the...sound of his voice, anything

we'll pull the man in for a personal interview.

Good.

Okay.

[sighs] Well...let's go.

[dramatic music]

[Henry] 'Good evening, please go right in.'

[Dr. Shigetsu] 'Good evening, Tom.'

Tom, you mind signing the ledger?

What's this all about?

[Henry] 'It's a town meeting to discuss'

'our public enemy'

'Mr. Fujita.'

[Tom] 'I was on my way out.'

[Leonard] 'You're leaving town, Kagawa?'

Why not?

You think I'm Fujita too

like my son does.

No.

Hi, Ben. You don't have to sign.

Your father just went in, Ben.

John.

It's good of you to come.

Aren't you speaking to your old friends anymore?

Laryngitis.

[music continues]

Excuse me.

I'm sorry, I meant to tell you.

John Osaki was in this afternoon to have his throat treated.

The laryngitis is legitimate.

From all the yelling and screaming

at the railroad station.

No way he could be faking?

No way.

When do you think it'll clear up?

- Tomorrow with luck. - That is not gonna work.

It's not gonna work. It's just not gonna work.

Give it a chance.

How many more?

The room's almost full. Not many left now.

[sighs] Oh, it's no use, it's just not gonna work.

I'll never hear that voice again, and even if I did

I don't know if I'd know it.

[music continues]

[Henry] 'Come on in, Joe.'

There's a couple of seats in front.

Come in for what?

To listen to you whine about

not being able to find Danny's k*ller?

You know, one of these days I'm not gonna take any more of that.

Then what will you do, flatfoot?

Slap my wrist?

[intense music]

I asked you a question, flatfoot.

Well, flatfoot..

...answer my question.

[music continues]

Fujita.

Come on, I told you, where's my answer--

Hey!

[indistinct chatter]

I hate you, Fujita!

[intense music]

Let me go! Let me go!

Calm down, Eric, it's over.

'Let me go, let me go!'

- I'll k*ll him! - You won't have to!

Don't let them lynch me, Henry.

Henry?

Come on, Fujita.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[siren wailing]

Well, son, we might as well go home.

Smell of rain in the air.

- It's good for the crops. - Yeah.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

You know, Jim, it's the only case of its kind

among the hundreds of thousands of loyal Nisei in this country.

And that's a record every American can be proud of.

Alright, I'll see you in the department tomorrow.

Fujita's been turned over to the US Marshal.

Look, Mr. Delbey

it's alright.

It's over.

You have nothing more to be upset about.

I know, I'm..

Mr. Erskine.

Yes, Eric.

You know what you've done for me?

You've given me back my sanity.

I wish there was something I could..

...give you in payment.

There is.

If you think you can spare it.

[music continues]

[sighs]

Uh, you mean this?

Take it.

Frame it, throw it away. I-I don't need it anymore.

A very good ending, Mr. Erskine.

And a good beginning for Mr. Delbey.

And for my town too.

[music continues]
