Sergeant Prothro.

Scott, what can we do for you?

I just missed you at the Faircraft jail.

I'd like to interview Larry Drake in regard to

some information we received this morning.

Can't it wait?

I'll be back in 99 years.

Okay, Zab. Go.

Drake, when you were in prison, did you..

Starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring Philip Abbott..

Stephen Brooks.

With guest stars Roy Thinnes..

Marlyn Mason..

Steve Ihnat.

Tonight's episode

"The Escape."

[instrumental music]

A routine police assignment had ended in a brutal

premeditated m*rder of three peace officers.

Not since 1933 and the bloody days

of Pretty Boy Floyd

had there been such a callous disregard for human life.

But one of the K*llers in making his escape

crossed the state line into West Virginia.

And now it was a matter for the FBI.

[music continues]

FBI man Howard Schaal had talked to Sheriff Scott Abbott

before he died.

And Abbott had identified one of the gunmen.

"Edward Warren Drake."

Drake?

Prisoner's brother.

There were three boys, Larry, Ed and Steve.

Howard, was there an indication

that Steve was in on this thing too?

Well, if he was, Abbott didn't see him

or at least he didn't recognize him.

He may not have known what does Steve look like.

He knew. That's why he came out here in the first place.

I had a report from state penitentiary

about Steve, conditional release violation.

Maryland was holding Larry in a m*rder charge

and I thought he might tell us where his brother was.

So I suggest that Abbott interview him.

You know, I was at his wedding.

I'm godfather to his eldest son.

Howard, you said he managed to get off a couple of shots.

Yes, sir, he was pretty sure he hit the driver of the car

that picked up Larry, a, uh, 57 Fodor green.

He also thought one of the other officers

wounded the driver of the second car.

I've alerted all the hospitals in this area.

Two cars.

And obviously Larry was expecting them.

Evidently, yes, sir.

That means somebody had to set it up.

Were there any visitors at the trial?

Well, I talked to the arresting officer.

He said that, uh..

one woman in particular came to court every day.

Girlfriend?

Well, that's what we assumed at first

but she turned out to be a sister-in-law.

'Patricia Drake.'

'Mrs. Steve Drake.'

Find out where she stayed during the trial.

See if she made any friends while she was there.

And, Howard, I want a picture of her.

[instrumental music]

Is he dead?

- Who was he? - I don't know.

Steve called him Zabby. He was on loan from somebody in LA.

[music continues]

[music continues]

Where to now?

To a farm outside of Montgomery.

Then you'll fly to Mobile and take a tram to Maracaibo.

Here's our route.

- Who planned that? - Steve.

Well, he figured it would be safer if we stayed off

the main highways, and...you know

away from the big towns.

Looks complicated.

No, I can find my way. I know most of those back roads.

Steve and I spent our honeymoon here at...Cliff Sides.

I want to thank you, Pat.

Look, I'm not doing this for you.

I'm here because Steve sent me.

When he speaks you jump, 'cause you love him, right?

- You bet I love him. - Hm.

That two bit lawyer Steve hired said you and Steve are going

back to Cliff Sides.

Is that why you bought all those clothes during the trial?

'A second honeymoon?'

You don't approve?

If you like punishment that's your problem.

Boy, what a sweet guy you are.

Do you know what it cost Steve to break you loose?

You really hate him, don't you?

Yeah. I hate him.

[dramatic music]

[engine revving]

[instrumental music]

[Jim] 'She got here during the last week of the trial.'

'As far as the manager can remember she had no visitors.'

Always very pleasant. She left on the day of the sentence.

What kind of a car did she drive?

A taxi would pick her up for the morning session

and bring her back when the court adjourned.

She told the manager she'd come to Faircraft by bus.

Find out the driver she used.

I want a record of every stop she made.

I want to know where she had her clothes cleaned

what restaurant she ate in

where she bought her magazines, everything.

Okay.

What have you got?

Uh, it's a lipstick, inspector.

It's brand new, doesn't look as though it's been there

very long. Could be Mrs. Drake's.

Call the lab and tell them I want a composition analysis

and commercial identification.

If she liked it she might try to buy another.

Let's see if we can find out what she'll be asking for.

Here's the lady's picture.

I got these from Steve Drake's file.

She has no federal record herself.

- Put this in the wire. - Yes, sir.

Is this California?

[Harold] 'Oh, I don't know, they were married in New Orleans.'

Seen happier-looking brides.

It's when Scott and Miriam were married.

There's a sign on the building in the background.

- Yeah, have it enlarged. - 'Yes, sir.'

Any information yet on Steve Drake's whereabouts?

No, sir. Not a thing.

[dramatic music]

- Welcome to Alabama. - How are you?

Johnny Servianka, my brother Ed.

You don't have to carry it inside.

Thanks.

It went good, huh?

I can do without my picture in the paper.

You shouldn't have left a witness.

Alright, alright, you did your best.

It was a bad hit.

The sailor took one, I think Zabby was hurt too.

But not Larry.

Then it was a good hit.

The kid's out.

Well, you're alright, aren't you?

Yeah. Sure, I'm alright.

Where's the sailor now?

Dumped the car in parts, we're gonna head up north.

- Did you hear from Pat? - Uh, she'll call tonight.

Still surprised she went through with it.

Why? Listen, she doesn't hate Larry

as much as you think she does.

She doesn't hate Larry at all.

[laughs] You just don't know women, brother.

You just don't know your wife, brother.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

[baby crying]

No, don't get up.

[sighs]

I'm sorry he had to act like that.

He's only a baby, but he knows something's wrong.

All the neighbors, the calls.

He'll go to sleep now.

Where's Lou?

He's with his grandma.

I just couldn't handle both of them, so..

...Scotty's mom said she'd take care of him

for a couple of days.

He-he'll be sorry he missed you.

He already looks so much like Scotty, he'll scare you.

R-remember that time

when you and Scotty and I went on that awful boat?

That-that picnic with..

[dramatic music]

Go ahead, let it out.

No.

You know, I woke up last night

it was about 3:30.

I took a sleeping pill, but it didn't work.

Nothing worked.

And I lay there and I thought

"You ought to be crying.

'All the widows in the movies cry. Cry!"'

But I can't.

Do you know what I want?

'What I'm waiting for?'

For the day you call and say

"Miriam, we've caught Scotty's murderers.

And the jury's just said 'Hang them.'"

Then it will be over.

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

Yes, he is.

Erskine.

Uh, right, put him on.

- Jim. - Lou, I'm out on the coast.

Northern west of Newport News.

The Virginia Authorities just called.

They pulled a body out of the bay.

Apparently he was dead before he hit the water.

- b*llet wounds? - Yes, sir.

We've sent a diver down. He, uh, spotted a vehicle.

A 57 green Fordor Sedan.

- Just the one body? - So far, yes.

He's been identified as Adam Zabreski.

A contract k*ller from Los Angeles.

Hm. Anything else?

Uh, yeah, Ray Schuyler, Senior Resident Agent, Wheeling called.

It seems a young doctor treated a man for b*llet wounds

so he reported it.

And the man's story, his name, the address he gave

the, uh, credit references were all a hundred percent phony.

Uh, tell Arthur I'll be in Wheeling if he needs me.

[Jim on phone] 'Yes, sir.'

A break already?

Maybe.

Miriam, is there anything I can do?

Just find them.

Find them.

[dramatic music]

Welcome back.

What time is it?

About 7:30.

I thought we were going to stop somewhere overnight?

We didn't pass a motel.

Besides I don't want to waste any more time than we have to.

I want to get back to Steve.

[groans]

Well, we're supposed to call him.

He's not gonna like that very much.

Well, next time we pass a diner or something

I'll stop and phone.

- You got a cigarette? - No.

I bought some boxing gloves?

I'm sorry, I'm..

...just tired.

Pull over, I'll drive for a while.

Okay.

Ooh.

Just stretch your legs for a while.

Oh, okay.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

I remember the first time I ever saw a country like this.

I was in a place...called..

[chuckles] Can't think the name of it.

'I remember it was the top two floors'

'of some building in Pittsburgh owned by the county.'

[chuckles] I've spent half my life in buildings owned by the county.

Uh, anyway one weekend they were

going to take 50 of us girls out for a hike.

[sighs]

Well, I went crazy.

You know just being out in the country.

[chuckles] Finally when the bus was supposed to go back I hid.

They found me finally.

Slapped me around.

But it was worth it.

I'd like to have met you then.

No, you wouldn't.

I was like something in a trap.

That's when Steve came along.

And what?

Larry.

I've loved you since the first time I saw you.

Uh, now quit it.

[grunts]

What's the matter with you?

Now why did you marry him in the first place?

Because you wanted a father to get you out

of those county homes. Well, baby, you're out.

[instrumental music]

All my life I've been in a trap.

Just one right after the other.

[sobs]

But this is the worst one, 'cause I'm not ever gonna

get out of this one.

Now, listen.

I got away from the police, didn't I?

And I can get you away from my own brother.

[music continues]

How you doing, Jim?

Well, I just saw a blow up of that old photograph

of Pat and Steve Drake.

An enlargement ratio of twelve and half to one

gave us a better look at that sign in the background.

Seems to be a toy company of some kind

but the manufacturer's name is still indiscernible.

Could we go for a ratio of twenty-five to one

without too much distortion?

They're working on that now, sir.

Well, as soon as you get the name of the manufacturer

call them up, have them send one of his people out here

to pinpoint the exact locale.

- Fine. - How about the lipstick?

Uh, negative on fingerprints.

There is one kind of curious thing though, sir.

The, uh, the lipstick holder is new

but the inner container, and the lipstick itself

are several years old.

You mean if this belonged to Patricia

she went out of her way to buy a new holder

for an old, unused lipstick.

That's right.

Let me know as soon as you find out who makes this.

Yes, sir.

[instrumental music]

Why don't you try it? Maybe it's out of order.

[instrumental music]

Maybe they've been taken.

We'd have heard.

They probably just forgot.

You know how the minutes slip by.

Ed, what are you tryin' to tell me?

Nothin'. Nothin'.

He's your kid brother, and you don't like him, alright.

I like him.

He's smart.

He's gonna be a big man in the business.

The old days are all over.

That's why I sent him through college.

Why you didn't send me?

'Cause I was too dumb?

I'm not bad for busting somebody loose though, am I?

I take orders pretty good.

You tell me to come right here, I'm here.

They're on their way.

My wife and my brother.

Now, if you have something to say, just say it.

[dramatic music]

They're in love.

They'll never show up here in a thousand years.

Steve!

Steve!

And you know it too, don't you, big brother?

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

His name is William Demner. Nickname Sailor.

Comes by it honestly.

He was in the merchant marine till he drew five years

at McNeil for smuggling heroine.

The doctor who treated him made a positive identification

just before you got in.

He has a couple of prominent tattoos that helped.

How badly was he wounded?

Arm and shoulder. Said it was a hunting accident.

- You located him? - Yeah.

He's in the Taft Hotel in Carnie Avenue.

I've a couple of men staked out there.

Let's go see what he's got to say for himself.

[dramatic music]

[knock at door]

- Who is it? - 'FBI.'

Just a minute.

[music continues]

What's the problem?

- William Demner? - Yeah, yeah.

What are you doing in Wheeling, Demner?

Passing through.

- How did you get shot? - You mean this?

Hunting accident.

You know a man named Steve Drake?

No.

Drake?

You mind coming down to the office with us?

No, not at all.

- Maybe you guys could tell me-- - Don't touch it.

Demner!

[g*nsh*t]

[music continues]

I knew that doc was gonna turn me in.

Very shifty eye type.

Send for an ambulance.

Right away.

Who's this Steve Drake you mentioned?

All of you made a real mess of it, Demner.

All? All who?

Steve at the planning, Ed at the airport.

Zabreski with the pick up car.

He threw us all in, huh?

Alright, so it was a mess.

Steve wanted his brother out, that's all he cared about.

Zabreski made the transfer outside of Newport News.

Who picked Larry up there?

Steve's woman. Pat.

What kind of a car did she use?

I don't know.

Tell those guys to hurry up, will you?

Where did she take him?

Oh, that's a very good question.

They were supposed to meet

Steve and Eddie in Montgomery.

Like sending a, a canary

to pick up a tiger to bring back to its cage.

Wild.

[Patricia] How would you like to live up here forever?

Is that what you want?

[sighs]

What I want and what I can have are two different things.

[sighs] Oh, I guess the world just isn't gonna go away, is it?

Come on, they'll be waiting for us in Montgomery.

Oh, I'm not goin' to Montgomery, neither are you.

Oh, Larry.

Come to Cliff Sides with me.

Cliff Sides?

- Come with me. - No. No, Larry, I can't.

I can't hurt him.

What are you doing to yourself?

And me?

Look, we can never face him again.

Where could we hide?

Oh.

[instrumental music]

Oh, Larry, he'd k*ll us.

Come on, we've just got to go.

Come on.

[telephone rings]

FBI.

For you, inspector.

- Erskine. - Lewis, this is Arthur.

- On Mrs. Drake's lipstick. - 'Yes.'

Well, it's not the same one that was originally in the case.

She replaced the new lipstick with an old one.

And we've managed to isolate the elements

got in touch with the manufacturer.

He told us he discontinued that line several years ago.

Nobody was buying it.

Uh, "Wedding Promise."

Strange move on her part.

Now, she made several strange moves

while she was in Faircraft.

She bought several hundred dollars

worth of clothes

lingerie, sports wear, bathing suit.

In fact, one of the saleswoman said

she acted like a girl buying a trousseau.

What color was the bathing suit?

Bathing suit was white.

Heh. Everything the same.

[Arthur on phone] 'What's that?'

Alright, I had Howard Schaal

sent a picture in to be blown up.

Right. Jim..

They just finished working on it. I got it right here.

Now, the sign on that building reads "Tusing Toys."

"T-U-S-I-N-G."

That's a small southern retail chain.

'And they're trying to find the exact location for us now.'

Good. In the meantime, we better put out a corrected description

on the Larry Drake stop.

He'll be traveling with his sister-in-law.

Uh, Pat Drake.

'Right.'

And would you get in touch with the SRA, Montgomery?

Tell him I'll be down in the next jet.

The other two brothers may be in his area.

[instrumental music]

- I haven't checked the oil, so. - Alright.

I'm gonna get a pack of cigarettes.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

You don't have to know who I am or where I am.

Just listen to me.

You can find the Drake brothers in an old farmhouse

ten miles out of Montgomery.

Old River Road.

[music continues]

[theme music]

Here, kid.

All's well to have your teeth straightened out anyway

didn't you?

Have a drink.

- Check the car. - 'What for?'

Just check it.

Check the car. Ahem. Okay.

You got your look.

Fair word.

It doesn't mean anything.

You know what he said to me once?

Pat had just come in..

...with a new hairdo, new clothes.

She looked like a little girl.

And Larry said..

"Hey, man, you know you've got a dozen

"different women wrapped up in that wife there.

How about giving me this one?"

I'll marry her in New Orleans..

...and take her to Cliff Sides.

[instrumental music]

And we all laughed.

Except you, huh?

Where are you going?

They wouldn't be dumb enough to go to Cliff Sides.

A man in love does dumb things.

Ain't that the truth?

[music continues]

When did this informant call, Ray?

While you were on the way in from the airport

about ten minutes ago.

- Man or woman? - Man.

And he said the Drake brothers

would be here, huh?

Not just Steve.

"Brothers," that's the word he used.

Yes. Rhodes?

Hang on.

Jim, they said you were trying to reach me.

Lou, we've got a location on the photo.

The Tusing Company said this particular store

was in a place called Cliff Sides.

'It was a resort in the Southern Appalachians.'

- Was? - Yeah.

It went out of business several years ago.

It wasn't much to begin with

and then a new highway passed it by.

Anything new on the Drakes?

We got a tip.

How long would it take you to get to Cliff Sides?

Well, let's see. Plane to Birmingham..

Well, I could be there before dark.

Good. And, Jim, if it's deserted

come on down to Montgomery.

I may need all the help we can get.

'Yes, sir.'

[sighs]

Let's go.

[dramatic music]

How well do you know this farmhouse?

Pretty well.

It's on a ravine with an old water tower

on the hill above.

I thought we'd take that route.

We'll be on top of them

and the other men can come in

from the riverbed.

You say this informant was definite

about the time and place?

Very.

You think this might be a wild goose chase, inspector?

I only know one way to find out.

[instrumental music]

How does it look?

Dead.

[birds chirping]

- All set in the back? - All set in the back?

- 'Right.' - All set.

Steven, Lawrence, and Edward Drake

'this is the FBI.'

'We have warrants for your arrest.'

'I order you to come out with your hands above your head.'

The house is surrounded.

Come out with your hands up.

Tear gas.

[g*nsh*t]

[glass shatters]

[dramatic music]

[g*nf*re]

Leave it alone.

[coughing]

Where are they?

[coughing]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

What's happened to it?

Well, couldn't make a go of it.

Out of business.

[music continues]

[Jim] These tire tracks are new.

Looks like Cliff Side isn't completely deserted.

Well, it could be teenagers.

A lovers' lane.

Yeah.

Call in anyway. Have Birmingham back us up.

Right.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

And it was so beautiful.

Things change.

It's better this way, isn't it?

Just us?

Larry, let's just forget the whole idea.

- No. - Look, what if Steve--

Oh, stop thinking about Steve.

[music continues]

He won't bother us anymore.

What do you mean?

Nothing.

- What did you do, Larry? - Never mind.

Tell me.

I turned him in.

Your own brother?

For you.

It's all over now. No more traps.

[gasps]

[Jim] 'Don't touch it!'

FBI, you're under arrest. Put your hands up.

[dramatic music]

Hold 'em up.

[music continues]

Alright, let's go.

[g*nf*re]

- Oh, it's Steve! - Come on!

[g*nsh*t]

[music continues]

[g*nf*re]

Oh, Larry.

[g*nf*re continues]

What do you mean they can't get a hold of him?

Birmingham reports that Kelton called them

for a couple of cars, they sent them.

But they haven't been able to raise

either Rhodes or Kelton since.

How long will it take for somebody to get up there?

Another 15 minutes.

Fifteen minutes.

[siren wailing]

[g*nf*re]

Keep him busy.

[music continues]

We shouldn't have come here.

Get away from me.

- Larry.. - Get away from me.

[music continues]

[g*nf*re continues]

Steve, behind you!

Alright, Schaal, let's take 'em home.

No more traps.

[instrumental music]

[theme music]

I hope you like your coffee strong.

It's fine.

- Sugar? Cream? - Oh, nothing, thanks.

Then you've got them all now?

The ones who did the driving too?

Yes.

And you were right, it doesn't help.

Does it?

No.

Oh, Lou, I can't make it without him.

Miriam..

No.

I can't think.

I can't move.

I'm in a cage, Lou, and I can't get out.

How do I get out? Isn't there any escape?

There isn't any cage, Miriam.

Unless you build it yourself

go in by yourself, and lock the door.

Can't you see that?

Everybody makes his own world.

You have two children to raise.

A new life. You can lead it any way you want to.

[instrumental music]

You'll make it.

But I miss Scotty so much.

Oh, Lou, I miss him.

Sheriff Scott Abbott and two fellow police officers

were slain on May 9th.

By May 12th, three days later

all of the suspects involved had been apprehended.

Lawrence Drake was returned to custody

to serve his life sentence.

Patricia and Edward Drake were tried and convicted

and are now in prisons in Maryland.

[theme music]

[music continues]
