[instrumental music]

"I refuse to answer under provisions

"of the Fifth Amendment to the constitution

'"on the grounds that my testimony'

'might tend to incriminate me."

Mr. Roland, did you or Mr. Ed Clementi

at any time ever loan any money

to the Gregory Construction Company?

Or Mr. Stuart Gregory personally?

I refuse to answer for the reason--

Is it true that you charged excessive interest rates?

So that when Mr. Gregory was unable to meet his payments

'you accepted a major interest in his firm'

'as partial settlement of the debt?'

I refuse to testify--

[male #1] 'Do you have any knowledge of the method used'

'to bleed the construction firm of its major capital assets?'

I refuse to answer.

Are you aware of a fraudulent conspiracy

to declare bankruptcy?

I refuse to answer.

Mr. Roland

are you and Ed committee members

of La Cosa Nostra?

I refuse to answer.

Witness is dismissed.

'This hearing is recessed until tomorrow morning'

'at ten o'clock.'

[indistinct chatter]

Well..

Nothing to it, counselor, I just--

Something's come up, Leo.

- What's come up? - They've got a witness.

Barber. Al Norris.

Hotel room with Gregory.

Did you have to discuss business in front of Norris?

He didn't hear anything he could use.

They'll tie you with

the construction company and Gregory.

That'll be enough to convince a federal judge.

he should invoke immunity.

Pull the fifth amendment right out from under you.

He'll order you to talk.

Put him off then.

He volunteered the information.

You can't bribe a crusader.

Hm.

Ed's still in Florida?

I suggest that he keep the boys together.

You might be needing her vote.

Let's go.

[dramatic music]

No, I don't like it.

I don't like the risk, Leo.

I don't like any part of it.

He'll be on that witness stand in the morning.

They can get me for perjury or for refusing to testify.

But to dump 'em, Leo.

Right now.

[Leo] 'I want a vote.'

Alright.

Alright, hold on.

Okay, Leo, you get your vote.

I'll handle it here.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

[whistling]

[chuckles] Hey, Gary baby, why don't you take me

to the bus terminal, huh?

Where you cuttin' out to now?

You know, you spend more time taking bus trips

than you do in the classroom and you still get As.

What's you secret, genius?

Genius!

[instrumental music]

[whistling]

[male #2] 'Mr. Alfred Norris?'

Tonight's episode..

"The Executioners, Part one."

[instrumental music]

Two b*ll*ts fired into his heart at close range

had blasted the life from Alfred Norris.

Key witness in the government's case

against the Cosa Nostra.

The investigation began under the direction

of Inspector Lewis Erskine

already in New York to present evidence to the Grand Jury.

The two spent cartridge casings

ejected from the assassin's g*n were found.

And dispatched at once to the FBI laboratory

in Washington DC

along with a single tiny fiber

found adhering to the ignition wires

of Alfred Norris's car.

It had been hot wired

to attract the victim's attention.

[dramatic music]

I really don't have time

to answer any more questions, Mr. Erskine.

Too bad about your witness.

Must be heart-breaking all the hard work you did

building up a case against me and for what?

Oh, I wouldn't say it was all we had, Mr. Roland.

Somebody ordered Norris's death.

Now, that's a very interesting theory.

- Any ideas? - A few.

We thought maybe you could help us.

Wish I could

but, uh, I've been putting off

this vacation now for some time.

Mr. Roland...we know

you had something to do with ordering Norris's death.

Mr. Erskine

it hurts me as a tax payer to see

public servants wasting their time like this.

For any move you make, I've got a better one.

You can't implicate me in this in anyway.

If I'm called on again to testify

I'll just read them this.

[dramatic music]

Great thing, the Constitution.

[dramatic music]

[male #3] 'How did word about the witness get out anyway?'

As evidence that Norris talked, there was no other leak.

[male #3] 'I suppose you wanna stay in New York now.'

I want this case. Yes.

The case or Leo Roland?

Both.

How does it look for us, without the witness?

Mike Dell, Mr. Ward. Assistant U.S. Attorney.

I think the Grand Jury will indict Gregory

on the evidence you've given us.

We can't get Roland or even Clementi to trial

unless Gregory himself talks.

Hmm, any chance of that?

No, sir, not much.

He's being counselled by Roland's own attorney.

Alright, Lewis, it's your case.

Get the k*ller. See where it leads.

[instrumental music]

Come on, Ed, so we learn how to contract.

Is that something new?

[telephone ringing]

Yeah.

- Leo? - Who's this?

- Uncle Ed. - Hey, Paul.

What's the matter, something wrong?

Ah, no, I'm, uh..

I'm in, I'm in New York.

Oh, I get it. A little touch, huh?

Yeah, I wondered if you could lend me

a $100 till next week.

[laughs] Okay, kid.

Here, say hello to Leo.

Hello, college boy. What do you say?

Agent Tommy was there, I almost blew it.

Well, you know your Uncle Ed and me.

Never far apart working or playing.

Yeah, well, look

um, the job is done.

Ah, fine, I'm, uh I'm glad to hear that.

Keep cracking those books, Paul.

See you soon, huh?

Hey, Paul

you seeing Aunt Flo?

No, I haven't, Uncle Ed, not yet.

Will you do me a favor, huh, kid?

You tell her to..

Uh, you, you ask her

if she'll see me when I get back.

Okay?

Okay, Uncle Ed, I'll, I'll try.

Alright, Paul, thanks a lot.

You are really out of your mind.

You know that.

Haven't we enough trouble already?

She's my wife, Leo.

Ten years in separate apartments

that's a wife?

Ed, is-is this what's eating you?

Is Flo why you dragged your feet about the hit?

Hey, Leo.

You're my friend.

And I can't tell this to anybody else.

I was thinking of asking the boys to let me retire.

That is before this Grand Jury action started.

You mean you're going to try to get Flo back?

Yeah, I'm gonna try.

And if you don't mind I'd like to--

I know the government won't mind dragging out

any one of a hundred things you've done in the past.

And if they get Flo on the stand--

Flo has never talked and she never will.

She talked to my daughter.

Oh, come on, Leo.

Chris left home well before that.

And the only reason she went to Flo

is because she had no place else to go.

Three years.

And who do you think saw to it she never came back?

And why would she come back?

Why would either one of them come back to us, huh?

La Cosa Nostra comes before

wife and family and country and religion.

No, they're not the ones who took the oath.

We did.

And you better not forget it.

[instrumental music]

Oh, Leo, I'm tired.

Tired of being a millionaire?

[chuckles] What good is it, if we can't buy what we want?

I hope you know what you're doing, old friend.

Because..

...if the government ever gets one of us

there's no way for the other one to come out clean.

No way.

[instrumental music]

[male #4] 'The term cashmere'

'covers a variety of materials these days.'

'But this is the real article.'

"Genuine cashmere goat hair," hmm?

We'll get it to the anti-racketeering desk.

Maybe the M.O. files can turn up a hitman

who has a weakness for expensive clothes.

[instrumental music]

- Ha-ha. - And the Senoritas, Milo.

Yeah, yeah.

[clicks tongue] You know, it's-it's, uh, been

five-six years since I've been to Mexico City.

I didn't wanna come back but the money gets low.

Gotta find some action.

It's a very good contrast, sir.

Where can I try this on?

Right over there.

[music continues]

[buzzes]

- Well, it's about time. - What?

- Your competition is late. - Anybody I know?

Uh, uh, no.

Ern-Ernie, uh, I'll talk to you later, okay?

- 'Well?' - Stick 'em up.

Looks like cupid's been using something

besides his bow and arrow, huh?

Oh, come on.

You know I don't fool around with the ladies

when I'm working.

Uh, what kind of sense does it make?

To be walking around with the hottest g*n in town?

Look, I checked into a hotel and I went to sleep.

Does that suffice?

Rule number one, cupid.

You pick up a g*n from a drop

you use it

and you get it back fast to the drop

the same night.

Now, if you don't know your business--

[grunting]

Who do you think you're talking to?

To let me to show you how well I do my business?

[grunts]

You owe me money. Come on.

Give me some money.

Count it.

You wouldn't dare.

They were definitely fired by the same weapon.

Nine millimeter.

Same as the slugs that were recovered

from the victim's heart.

But, uh, I don't think they were manufactured

in this country.

- Spanish. - Hm.

[clearing throat]

Give me the anti-racketeering desk, please.

They sell a lot of these g*ns in this country?

No, sir, not many.

Oh, yeah, this is Ward, see if this rings a bell

in M.O. will you?

The cartridges were manufactured in Spain

to fit an automatic made there by the Berba Arms company.

Mm-hm. Nine Millimeter.

[music continues]

[doorbell ringing]

You're three months past due on your paper, lady.

- You moonlighting again? - Absolutely.

- Oh, well, come on in. - How are you?

Just fine!

Now I suppose I should scold you for skipping classes, heh?

Forget it, I'm so far ahead of those idiots.

Oh, good.

- Chris? - Sure.

Hi, Paul.

Oooh!

[chuckles]

How are you, skinny?

- Skinny? - How do you like that?

I spent three years growing up just so he'll

notice me and he still calls me skinny.

Wh-what are you doing here?

I live here, right down on the hall.

I-I work in the same hospital as Flo.

Same floor, same shift, everything.

Kind of a, a family plan.

- I like that uniform? - Yeah. Hey.

Do you like it?

I love it.

[both chuckling]

Look, does, uh..

Does your father know about all this?

I don't have a father anymore.

Hey, Flo, what's the matter?

[sighs]

Come on, Aunt Flo.

You know, this is some other smart reporter

trying to make a headline.

Uncle Ed would never get himself involved in anything like this.

He wouldn't?

[laughs]

Why wouldn't he?

He'll never change.

Flo?

[chuckles]

Our relatives are murderers.

And you're some kind of Florence Nightingale

who's trying to put them back together again.

It's wild.

[sighs]

Yeah, wild.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

Now, each pair was recovered

at the scene of a gangland k*lling.

It's Spanish and made to fit the Berba automatic.

- Hmm. Always two b*ll*ts? - Mm-hmm.

And always in the heart.

That's why they call him Cupid.

Cupid?

Now, this boy is proud of his work.

And doesn't want anybody else taking credit for it.

Did he got another name?

Uh, not that anybody knows.

He's anonymous, efficient and relatively new.

It seems they have been operating

only a couple of years.

Now, his file's pretty thin.

Yeah. Well, I'll get these down to firearms.

See how they compare with the new ones.

Cupid.

[door closes]

It's no use, Uncle Ed.

No, when she read that stuff about Norris in the newspaper

being k*lled that really tore her.

Hey, Paul.

You told her it wasn't my idea, huh?

I did.

But she and Chris, um, they just cut out for the hospital.

- Chris? - Yeah, she's back now.

Yeah, she was in nurse's training school.

She's really quite lovely.

I, I think I'll stick around a couple of days.

You do that, maybe Flo will change her mind.

[Paul] 'I'll try, Uncle Ed.'

What about Chris?

Flo made a nurse out of her.

- Huh? - Yeah, Leo.

Let's go to New York, huh?

We can see both of them.

Hmm? No.

We don't leave Florida till this

Grand Jury thing is resolved.

If they indict Gregory, if he cracks

he can still involve us.

You're not thinkin' of wastin' him too, are you?

- If we have to. - Oh, Leo.

As I said

"Anybody gets in our way, we waste 'em."

Gregory, anybody.

[man #1] 'Did you or Mr. Ed Clementi at any time ever--

[Gregory] '"I refuse to answer under provisions'

'"of the Fifth Amendment to the constitution.'

under grounds that my testimony might tend to incriminate me."

Is it your intention, Mr. Gregory

to deny ever having had any business dealings

with Leo Roland or Ed Clementi?

I refuse to answer for the--

Alright, alright, there's no point in wasting

the panel's time any further. You're dismissed.

Mr. Dave, I'll excuse you too while I hold the jury.

Carl, swearing under Fifth isn't gonna work, I can tell.

Not here.

Listen, you tell my friends

they gotta get me out of this.

We'll talk outside.

Same tune, same lyrics

and they still don't include Roland or Clementi.

So it's on your back for sure now, Lew.

Prove they ordered Norris k*lled or we lose 'em

Lew..

We got a line on the car the k*ller used.

It was stolen from a parking zone at 51st in Madison.

Mr. Dale, we've indicted Gregory on the bankruptcy fraud.

We're recommending that a warrant

be issued for his arrest.

Well, there it is, Lew.

Of course, the fraud case against Gregory

doesn't help you too much, does it?

Not unless he talks.

[instrumental music]

Randolph.

For you, inspector. Mr. Ward.

Yes, Art.

[Arthur] 'Yeah, we're beginning to develop a picture here.'

'So far there's a cashmere garment involved'

'probably a sport coat.'

Chet, get a list of stores that handle them.

Your hitman is known as Cupid.

Just Cupid. There's no other ID on him.

Well, he uses a Spanish-made Berba automatic, exclusively.

- 'Same one?' - I don't know.

I'm getting a conclusion on that right now.

Hold on just a minute. What'd you find out?

Uh, the ejector marks are different.

And so are the firing pin indentations.

Lewis?

He uses a different g*n for every job.

It's always a Spanish-made Berba automatic.

- g*n drop, huh? - Sounds like it.

The M.O.O. on Cupid, uh, lists the names

of all the distributors of the weapon in this country.

Yeah, we also found out that some of the shipments

from Spain were short.

Waterfront theft.

Case is still pending.

I'll get a list of longshoremen who were working that day.

Jim.

[Arthur] 'Hey, you better get right on it.'

Even though it maybe unproductive.'

That's a lead, Arthur. What else do we have?

Right, Carl, we'll take care of it.

They've indicted Gregory.

Got him downtown already.

Carl says it does not look good.

We've got to stop him.

Leo, there must be another way.

He's beginning to come apart.

I'm calling for a sit down.

No!

Not another hit!

We've spent years building

a respectable image and then it all--

Gregory's scared. He's cornered and he'll talk.

Now, we can always ship him out of the country, couldn't we?

Sure, if he wanted to go

and if he didn't change his mind.

Ed, we're wasting time. We can put up the bail.

Fifty thousand. Get him out in the open.

- Leo, listen. - I want a vote.

Do we hit Gregory?

[instrumental music]

I'd like to talk with Ed alone.

[instrumental music]

If I told them what's really wrong with you

'you'd be in as much trouble as Gregory.'

Leo.

What I told you was in confidence.

You've got me worried, old friend.

You're getting soft.

And that makes you dangerous.

You make this contract.

- Me? - Yes, you.

Oh, I see, Leo.

One little insurance, huh?

Well, I don't know Cupid.

I don't where he is or anything!

You know Ernie Milden. He's back.

His number is in there.

[instrumental music]

Either you're in the club, Ed, or you're not.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

Chet...you know that, uh, that list

of men stores you compiled?

- Yes. - Have you got a Dexter on it?

Dexter?

Identification says that a longshoreman

named Sam Dexter was on the pier

the day the g*ns were stolen.

Now, he has a brother Milo who owns that--

Milo? Sure.

Milo. See, here it is.

Madison Avenue, that's only half a block

from where the car was stolen.

Cashmere and g*ns. Why not?

Immediate photographic surveillance.

Check front and rear. The works.

Maybe it'll put a face on Cupid.

[laughing]

You took a long time.

Did you that I have been in love with you since I was six?

No, I, I didn't know that.

Oh..

[instrumental music]

I thought you two were going out.

Well, it's not that I don't approve.

What Aunt Flo is trying to say is she doesn't want you

to get mixed up with the wrong crowd, right?

Well, you're not part of that.

Not now, he isn't.

Oh, now, what kind of thing is that for an aunt to say?

Oh, come on.

We all know how they operate.

And now they need college graduates

to run their legitimate businesses.

They'll offer you the sun and the moon

and a piece of the action.

And if you're fool enough to take it, they'll own you.

Chris will be right back where she started.

Aunt Flo, uh, uh

just because you hate Uncle Ed, uh..

Hate him?

I wish I did.

[instrumental music]

Lew, take a look.

[instrumental music]

The guy looking in the window.

'Ernie Milden.'

I wonder how long he's been back?

Maybe Cupid's just an old friend with a new M.O.

Even if he isn't Cupid, he might know who is.

Mike, do we still have a warrant on him?

Unlawful flight.

- Let's take him. - Yeah.

[instrumental music]

Look out to units 1 and 2.

[instrumental music]

Excuse me? FBI.

I'll have to ask you people to leave.

Please, just walk out quietly.

You, show me some ties.

[instrumental music]

FBI, Milden, you're under arrest.

[instrumental music]

Feds.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Call an ambulance.

- What? - Right away.

Yes, sir.

Take Milden down to the office. I wanna talk to him.

After I've talked to Milo.

A couple of you go over this place

see if you can find any more g*ns.

[instrumental music]

Now, you can call the coroner.

Ernie must know something whether he's Cupid or not.

If he knows more than we do..

...he wouldn't be here.

Yes, yes, Ed Clementi. Have you seen him?

- 'At the airport.' - Airport?

- When? - 'About an hour ago.'

'He and Jackie took off for--'

- Yeah. - 'This is Frankie.'

'The Feds just knocked over Milo's.'

'They picked up Ernie Milden.'

- Alive? - 'Not a scratch.'

- What about Milo? - 'Dead.'

Hmm.

Frankie, I think Ed's back in New York.

Try and get word to him about this, will you?

- 'Right.' - Thanks.

[phone ringing] Hello?

Paul Clementi there?

Who is this?

Friend of his. Is he there?

Leo, is that you?

Okay, Flo, now, don't hang up, please.

What do you want with Paul?

I thought he might know where Ed is.

You mean you don't.

The Rover Boys finally get separated?

[Leo] 'Flo, just tell him I called, will you?'

Leo, please.

Don't do anything to Paul.

I'll make a deal with you, Flo.

If you leave Chris alone then I'll leave Paul.

I'm not doing anything to Chris.

She came to me for help.

I gave it to her that's all.

She didn't need help. She had everything.

Hmm. Sure.

Including her father who never told her the truth

about anything in her whole life...ever.

You're not very smart, Flo, you know that.

Just because you've got your claws into it

don't think you're something special.

Don't count on it forever.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

Sit right here, Milden.

Would you read this and then sign it?

Just states that you've been told of your rights

that you understand them.

Absolutely.

If there's anything I'd like to do is cooperate with the FBI.

You sure, you don't want a lawyer?

Now, what does an innocent man need with a lawyer?

Somebody k*lled a grand jury witness named Alfred Norris.

We thought, maybe you knew something about it.

Go ahead.

Give it your best shot.

Show me, how you gonna make a case out of this one.

[doorbell ringing]

- Jackie? - Mrs. Clementi.

It's been a long time!

Oh-ah, what are you doing?

Alright, stay outside, Jackie.

What're you doing, coming in here?

Who else can I talk to, Flo?

Why me?

Why does it always have to be me?

Because you love me.

I loved the man

I took care of in the hospital.

Who took me home and married me.

I then found out he was another guy.

Well, you're still married to me.

Why?

'Cause I'm a fool.

'Cause I..

I always hoped..

...that you'd try to get out of all this.

Flo.

I want to pull out, honey.

But I just don't think, they'll let me.

You know, it's closin' in on me more and more. I feel like..

Did I ever tell you about the time when I was a kid?

'My mother..'

Hmm.

She dragged me down to the church

to speak to Father Benali about some..

...some signs I had stolen.

Oh, I went in alright.

But I came right back out.

The side door.

Flo.

'You know, I feel like I'm right back in that church again.'

Only this time, I can't find the side door.

And you wanna know why?

Because I don't want to.

Hey, Flo.

I need your help, I know.

I need you, sweetheart.

Why?

Why do you always get to me like this?

Oh, honey.

I swear to you, I'm levelin'.

Are you?

There.

There's your number.

Call them.

Well, it's not that easy.

Who said it was easy?

I can't just--

Please. Please.

Can I get it for you?

No.

I need more time.

How much time is there?

Go spend it somewhere else..

Uncle Ed. Uh, I saw the car downstairs and Jackie in it.

Don't close the door, he's just leaving.

Wait outside.

- Why are you crying? - No, no, no.

Come on in, you might as well know what's going on.

After all, we're the only parents, you've got.

Alright, get outside.

Don't do that.

You...get out of here!

- Please. - I'm sorry.

Ernie.

Who gave you the contract to hit, Norris?

You always use a Berba automatic?

[laughing]

Oh, you boys disappoint me.

Your timing is off.

We should've been to the good guys, bad guys by now.

Oh?

Now, who's gonna be the bad guy?

Alright, you be the bad guy. You get mad at me.

And then, you stick up for me like a good friend.

And then I talk.

Alright, take him outta here.

Get him arraigned.

Oh, Jim.

- How's Milo? - Well, he's uh..

Uh.. Lew, can I talk to you for a second?

Yeah.

[indistinct chatter]

'Alright, Chet. Wait a minute.'

May I have a cigarette, somebody?

Chet.

[indistinct chatter]

[dramatic music]

This isn't gonna work either, you know.

Alright, is Milo dead?

He's dead.

Well, if he happened to talk before he died..

...then you know, I'm clean.

Do we?

Well, a man's not gonna lie before he dies, right?

Right.

Unless he wanted you to burn.

Maybe you know too much, Ernie.

What are you, out of your mind?

Oh, that's right, I almost forgot.

He was a friend of yours.

[Jim] 'That's right, you're all'

real good friends, aren't you?

Clementi, Roland, Milo.

'All loyal, faithful buddies.'

Alright!

What did he say?

Who's Cupid, Ernie?

I don't know.

Oh, come on, Leo. I don't wanna rush into anything.

Paul, If Ernie talks

if he tells them there's a contract out

they'll put Gregory where we can't get at him.

It'll cost you ten thousand dollars.

Ten thousand?

Now, look here!

Alright.

Dylan Hotel.

Registered as John Raymond.

Carl, convinced him to go there to hide from the reporters.

How am I gonna get fixed with Milo outta business?

Dave's fish market on Amsterdam.

Use Milo's name and ask for your order of halibut.

This is the one?

Positively, yes sir.

Recognize it?

It's a Berba automatic.

It's the one we took from you.

You know, of course, that it was a Berba that k*lled Norris?

This one?

Ernie.

I want you to think, very hard.

Did Milo say anything to indicate he, uh..

...he might try to cross you?

Cross me, how?

Is there any reason why he might

not have destroyed the Norris g*n?

Why he might've kept it?

Did he give it to you?

Milo giving me a hot one, you gotta be kidding.

- Oh, for the love of God! - Wait a minute, wait a minute.

Maybe he doesn't understand.

Well, what's to understand?

We go along with him, trying to believe he's telling the truth--

I happen to believe he is telling the truth.

Yeah, well, if he is, you know what that means.

You're no prize, Ernie.

But I don't wanna see you get a bum rap.

[dramatic music]

[knocking on door]

[knocking continues]

Yeah.

Who is it?

[male #2] 'An urgent message from Mr. Munroe's office.'

Munroe's office?

- Yeah. Hi. - Hi.

What about the day time? Gee! I was asleep.

Now, turn around.

[g*n shots fired]

Alright. I had a contract, I admit it.

But I didn't go through with it.

Oh, come on, Milden.

Norris was dead days before we picked you up--

Not Norris.

Well, who then?

Stuart Gregory.

Who gave you the contract, Roland?

No, Clementi, Ed Clementi.

He'd called me himself.

Joe.

Take Milden out, will you?

It's him.

Call Gregory.

Tell him again, he needs police protection.

Yes, sir.

Lew.

Stuart Gregory has just been k*lled.

'At the Dylan Hotel.'

'Another guest found him. The door to his room was open.'

Jim.

Call Mike Dale in the morning.

Get a subpoena for Clementi.

Clementi?

Yeah, the day wasn't a total loss.

Can't get much closer to Roland than that, huh?

Goodnight, Chet.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

- Mr. Clementi. - Yeah.

Last week, before you went away

we noticed a strange noise in your engine.

- What kinda noise? - Oh, don't worry.

We had it fixed.

Here, it tells you on the bill.

Yeah, but I didn't authorize you to..

[dramatic music]

Subpoena?

When was it served?

Just now!

In the office garage, I'm in the phone booth.

Don't go home and don't go back to the office again.

They got Ernie. He must've talked.

Ed, you can't answer that subpoena.

Now, listen to me.

Go to the Cedric Motel on the Hudson River parkway and wait.

I'll be up on the next plane and I'll arrange everything.

Money, cover, everything.

They'll never find you.

Listen, Leo. I don't get it.

If Gregory wasn't hit--

He was. Last night.

[male narrator] As one Cosa Nostra attempt to thwart justice by m*rder
