[instrumental music]

- Havin' troubles, buddy? - Yeah.

I hit a shoulder about half a mile up the road.

- Can you give me a shove? - Sure, hop on.

[dramatic music]

Hey, why are you out? I thought you said half a mile.

This will do. Get out.

I don't have any cash on me, honest, I haven't..

[g*nshots fired]

Come on.

[dramatic music]

I think that oughta be a good match, huh?

Have you found a boat yet?

Oh, that's all taken care of.

I just hope three million dollars will fit into the hold.

That's not the problem, David.

The problem is how to get it out of the boat in the first place.

You can do it. I've got all the faith in the world in you.

I've been over it a thousand times.

There is no way to cut that closed circuit TV off.

Max, there's always a way.

Oh, I, uh, I heard from Corky.

Don't worry, they're taking good care of your boy.

Funny, even he wondered if you'd

found a way to work the thing out.

I guess he doesn't want to have to cut your son's throat.

[intense music]

Tonight's episode..

"...By Force and Violence Part Two."

[instrumental music]

Eighteen year old Robert Griswold

kidnapped from a Kansas City office building

on the evening of June 7th

had been missing for eight days.

Unknown to the FBI, Griswold's ransom

was to be three million dollars

stolen from the counting vault of Hill Dempsey

a brokerage firm in San Diego.

There were only two slim clues as to the identity

of the criminals and the whereabouts of their victim.

One of the kidnappers was known to frequent Chinese restaurants

and the kidnapped vehicle had been identified

as a recently purchased camper.

Well, sir, anything new? Did you find that poor kid?

Not yet, but I think we've got a lead

on the man who brought the camper.

- Halper? - Do you recognize him?

'That's your boy.'

David Spiers.

Were these men in on the deal?

- Yeah. - You sure?

Positive.

Well, what's your next step, pick 'em up?

Find him.

How's it coming, Harry?

Almost there.

Here, Alvin.

You try this when you go on duty tonight.

If it works as well as the other ones

we'll be inside that vault before they know what's hit 'em.

Any ideas on the closed circuit TV yet?

- Not yet. - Hey, Max?

Look, I've got other deals on the fire.

I can't waste time.

Look, I'm doing the best I can!

Now, stop bothering me, both of you!

I'll think of something.

Just...keep off my back.

You were supposed to get the burglar

alarm plans from Anderson.

- Have you done it? - I'll get 'em tonight.

You finish your own assignments and then you complain, okay?

Okay.

Well..

He's got a lot on his mind.

So, who hasn't?

Art, I talked with every SAC on the West Coast.

- Not a sign of Spiers. - Alright, then.

Come in. Just a minute, Lewis.

Oh, good. We've got the first response on the camper APB.

It was ticketed on the day after the kidnapping

by the Colorado Highway Patrol.

Made an ill*gal lane change just outside of Grainger.

- Headed West? - 'Yes, West.'

[caller buzzes]

Excuse me, Art. Yes?

[female #1] 'Mrs. Max Griswold to see Inspector Erskine.'

Be right with her.

Art, Barbara Griswold just walked into the office.

Well, that may be a good sign.

Okay, Lewis, I'll let you know

as soon as we have anything further.

Right.

Mrs. Griswold.

You know SAC McDonald, of course.

- This is Special Agent Colby. - How do you do?

- Mrs. Griswold. - Oh, won't you sit down?

No, you'd make a marvelous lawyer.

You've come up with some very good arguments.

I don't know many people who could convince me

that the only way to save my son was to turn my husband in.

Where is he, Mrs. Griswold?

- Would the general area help? - Yes, it would.

I talked to him at one o'clock in the afternoon

and I heard the sound of thunder on the phone

and he said that it was raining.

So, I contacted the weather department

and the only place in the country

where there were rain and thunder showers yesterday

was Los Angeles.

I'll check that further, Lew. Might get more detail.

And I'd like to fly out myself, if you have no objections.

Of course not.

I guess that I've done all the damage to Max that can be done

haven't I?

[melancholic music]

[knocking on the door]

Hi. Well, welcome home.

I didn't know whether to expect you two

back from San Diego tonight or not.

- Where have you been? - Anderson Company.

I picked the lock for Flood.

He got pictures of the Hill Dempsey burglar alarm system.

You have any trouble?

It was a breeze. They won't even know we were there.

- The prints are drying now. - Where's Flood?

Well, isn't he here? I dropped him off on my way home.

He said he'd wait for you while I developed the pictures.

- How long ago was that? - Two, three hours maybe?

- Two or three hours? - Yeah.

I told him all to tell their the girlfriends to get lost.

Claude doesn't seemed to have paid much attention.

Alright, alright. I'll talk to him.

- You do that. - Max, look.

We're in this thing together. There's no need to get ex..

Oh, no, we're not in this together.

I'm in it because I have to be.

But I had years when I could decide for myself

when I was gonna get up in the morning

and when I was gonna go to bed.

'And when I was gonna eat, and what I was gonna wear.'

'Instead of some guard in the joint deciding for me.'

And before you're through, Davie

you're gonna put me back there.

And what makes me really mad is that I have to help you do it.

[intense music]

- Hello, Lew. - Bryan, good to see you.

You must be Tom Colby. I'm Bryan Durant.

Bryan, how are you?

Lew, we've covered every high crime incident area in the city.

The east and south sides. The fringe areas. The Strip.

Not a trace of either Griswold or Spiers.

And what do you hear from your informants?

Pretty much the same story

with a couple of interesting exceptions.

Apparently, these men hit LA about five days ago.

[Inspector Erskine] 'Billy Canada, Claude Flood.'

They both worked for Griswold in the past

but never at the same time, never with each other.

Were they specialists?

Um, Canada's an ordinary competent car thief

but Flood's a near genius in television electronics.

It seems he's something of a genius with the women too.

Has he ever been arrested in Los Angeles?

Mm-hmm. Sheriff's Department

picked him up about nine months ago.

He was questioned and released without charges.

There's a copy of the arrest report further back.

Uh, let's see who he wanted notified in case of emergency.

That's someone they count on.

'Here we are. "Monica Duval."'

'"311 West 6th Street. Santa Barbara."'

[grunts]

Was she worth it, Romeo, huh?

When we get out of this, I'm gonna k*ll you.

You listen to me, lover boy.

You made a deal with me, you agreed to take my money

and you took my time.

In the first hour I'm out of sight

you're off with some babe and a bottle and for all I know

you may have ruined the best deal I ever put together

and you're gonna k*ll me?

For your information..

...Max and I have looked over the factory in San Diego..

...the one where we'll be..

...running the drills in.

And it's beautiful, we can duplicate every facet

of Hill Dempsey, that concerns us.

Including a TV camera?

Hey, I got gin.

It's too bad we can't schedule a rerun, huh?

An old gangster movie maybe. Pew!

- What's the matter? - You've got it.

What?

We pick a night and a time

when the shift that we want is on duty in the vault..

'we tap into the monitor circuit'

'and we tape a routine 30 or 40 minutes of whatever they do.'

'Usual activity.'

Then when we hit the vault..

...we k*ll the live picture and substitute the replay.

Can you do that, lover boy, huh?

In about three seconds.

No one's gonna see anything but a flicker on the screen.

[laughs]

And I thought of it.

[laughs]

I'm a genius.

Max? I want to congratulate you.

I'm gonna buy you a drink. You really deserve it.

You know what you've just done?

You've saved a boy's life. Huh?

[laughing]

Her name is Monica Duval.

She works in a go-go club called the Channel One.

She's a friend of Flood's, but he's got a big mouth.

I want you to shut her up.

I'm gonna find out first if, uh, he told her anything.

I know what he told her. Do it now.

- This afternoon. - Yes, sir.

[instrumental music]

Miss Duval?

Okay, buddy, what do you want?

I, uh, want to tell ya how much I admired your dancing.

Oh. Well, fine, you told me.

Now get lost, will ya?

Hey, what are you..

[gasps]

[screams]

Stay where you are. FBI.

[g*nsh*t]

[groaning]

We'll have an ambulance right away, Miss Duval.

Do you know who that was?

You do know a man named Claude Flood?

Why did he go to Los Angeles, did he tell you?

[crying]

Job.

A job, with whom?

[crying]

Billy.. Canada.

Oh, Floyd Mitchell.

[groaning]

Now, with the face plates on

it'll be impossible to recognize anyone.

And so the helmets have been color coded.

White is for command. Red is for the trouble squad

the sub-machine g*ns. Green helmets

you have 700 pounds of cash to pack in 12 minutes.

You'll rehearse until you can do it in ten.

Now, we've taped the floor.

To indicate the exact layout of Hill Dempsey to the inch.

Now this represents the main entrance.

The first floor corridor.

And then, a security gate with bars.

- Guard operated? - Right.

And he's an armed security officer

not a kindly old duffer named Pop.

Now, he sits here.

Now if he's able to immobilize the elevator

before we can get him

then we take the stairs.

There are sixteen steps to the vault corridor.

We have thirty seconds up, twenty seconds down.

But if we can utilize the elevator

then we turn right when we get out of it

and we come to the second security gate.

Now that one is unguarded, fortunately.

And just inside, we hook in our tape substitute, here.

Then comes the door to the counting room.

And finally the vault door itself

which will be standing open.

And our last barrier will be

a security gate inside the vault.

There's no key to that one

we'll have to cut through with a torch.

And behind that gate

three and a half million in cold cash.

Have you found a place outside Hill Dempsey

where you can splice into the circuit?

There's a manhole near 18th and A.

Reception should be good for taping.

Good.

Okay, let's try a run through.

We start at the main entrance

and the time will be exactly 4:55 AM.

[dramatic music]

[indistinct chatter]

I don't know, maybe Spiers got a fortune cookie

that said don't eat in Chinese restaurants.

[chuckles]

Good evening. Two?

We'd like to see the owner, please, is he in?

Well, no, but could I help you? I'm Becky Lee.

FBI, Miss Lee.

Have you ever seen this man before?

He's about 5 foot 11.

- 'Dark hair, probably gray.' - 'Yes.'

Yes, he's been in a couple of times.

Once with another man.

This man?

Yes.

He called some place.

Do you have any idea what the number was?

He wrote it down on one of our menus.

It was noon, the lunch menus.

There. Will that help?

You have no idea how much, Miss Lee.

Thank you.

[ominous music]

[phone ringing]

- Yeah? - 'Put the boy on.'

It's your papa.

- Hello. - Robert?

- How do you feel? - Well.

Like the man said, on the whole

I think I'd rather be in Philadelphia.

[laughing]

You know the quote?

W.C. Fields.

It's his epitaph.

Fields fan.

[Max] 'Funniest man who ever lived.'

Yeah.

I think so too.

I guess we have something in common.

Uh, maybe.

Look, I don't mean to bug you..

...but this whole thing is so hard for me to figure out.

Now, w-what do they want?

Why do they need you?

I wish I could explain.

I can't.

All I can ask is that you trust me.

'Maybe you don't feel like doing that and I wouldn't blame you.'

Alright.

I trust you.

Okay. Good.

[knocks on window]

I've got to go now, Robert.

We'll be talking again.

Yeah.

Goodnight, son.

Goodnight.

Night.

Are they treating him alright?

They better be.

Firm orders, Max.

If it weren't for the boy

you'd have found a way to k*ll me by now

wouldn't ya?

Yes.

[dramatic music]

Coming up on 5:07.

You've lost 32 seconds so far.

See if you can make it up in packing the cash.

Go.

Coming along very well.

Even your boy would be proud of you if he could see you now.

That reminds me, I want him brought

all the way to the coast.

Phone your boys, tell 'em to get started.

No. They're safe enough where they are.

When it's all over, I'll tell you where he is.

- That's the deal. - I just broke the deal.

I'm not going into the boondocks to find my boy.

I have a feeling neither one of us would get out.

Max, I still don't see why

you won't come to Mexico with the rest of us.

Well, Max, think it through.

I have. Bring the boy to San Diego

or you can take these men into Hill Dempsey yourself.

Look, Max.

Alright.

[dramatic music]

Excuse me, Ms. Parr?

Yes. Oh, if you're Mr. Fry

I am sorry I'm late.

We can still see the property.

They've turned down a firm offer..

FBI?

Come in.

You have a client named Fair, Ms. Parr?

Yes.

We just spoke to Mr. Fair and he identified

this man as your employer.

[Ms. Parr] 'This is Mr. Pickett.'

Well, now, the last lead we had on Mr. Pickett

was a few days ago when he placed a call

to Mr. Fair from a Chinese restaurant.

Do you know where Mr. Pickett is now?

In San Francisco.

On business. Hotel Gilman.

If he isn't there, he said

he could be reached at, uh..

...this number.

Hmm. Who's his client there?

Well, Mr. Pickett was a little secretive about this one.

Halpern, I think.

Halpern.

Why? What's going on?

[intense music]

Hold it!

Now what's wrong?

Nothing. You're ready.

[laughs]

- It's about time. - We made it.

I want you all to get at least eight hours sleep.

Ten if you can. We'll have hot coffee when you wake up.

Then we'll move out.

Sweet dreams.

[indistinct chatter]

I've got a good feeling about this one, Max.

We are going to make history.

This is one battle you can't lose, general.

I wonder how many bright-eyed civilians have said that before.

To Confederate commanders..

Indian chiefs..

Russian Counts in the first w*r.

German Field Marshalls in the second.

It's never a matter of heart, Davey, it's a question of time.

Well, you've got it timed right down to the second.

- You just said so. - Got the robbery time, sure.

That's only the beginning.

If the police don't get us at the plant, they're in no hurry.

Sooner or later, they'll pick up somebody.

Because of a woman

or...because somebody is unhappy about the split

or...somebody left a print.

And then we all start to topple.

One domino after the other.

The thing that always beats us is time.

The police have all the time in the world.

Uh, Hotel Gilman?

Yes, you have a Matt

or a Matthew Pickett registered there?

Well, Mr. Pickett came back about, uh

But he wouldn't leave his name.

Spiers.

- What do you want him for? - Yes, thank you.

Excuse me.

Hotel Gilman never heard of Matt Pickett.

And the number he gave Ms. Parr is an answering service

he ordered the service by phone and he paid a month's check.

But he never tried to find out if there were any messages.

- Were there? - No.

Ms. Parr, uh.

Is, uh, Mr. Pickett apt to call in from time to time

'just to see how things are going?'

Yes, he might.

Especially if he had a big deal on the fire.

Do you know of a deal like that?

No.

But something was on his mind.

He's been working nights.

Here or out in the field?

Here, mostly. At least, that's what he said.

You never know it by the way the face looked in the mornings.

No cigarette butts, empty bottles.

You'd swear he vacuumed the place before he left.

Is there a vacuum in the office?

Yes, but, uh..

Wonder if we could see it?

Are you serious?

I guess you are.

Thank you.

[instrumental music]

Could this mean anything to you?

'Yes, it's part of one of our open listing forms.'

Mr. Pickett probably made a listing.

Somebody sold the property and he..

And what, Ms. Parr? He got so angry, he burned it?

Well, apparently, he did burn it.

'Whether it makes any sense or not.'

Can you tell what listing that refers to?

'Would the date help?'

Yes, it might. Let me check my files.

[phone ringing]

Yeah?

We're just outside of Barstow, Dave.

I think this is far enough.

He wants you to bring the boy

to the turnoff at Torrey Pines.

I can't talk him out of it.

I can't hang out on this road forever, Dave.

This is far enough!

Will you quit arguing with me?

Do it. Just do it!

Put the boy on.

- Hello? - Robert?

Hi.

It'll only be a couple of more hours.

- Hang on. - Yeah.

Hey, look, I-I-I've got a feeling

that this is tough on you as it is on me.

- Am I right? - Almost as tough.

Well, then, you hang on too.

I will.

Well.

Goodbye, son.

Goodbye.

Goodbye, dad.

- Okay? - Okay.

Get the boat ready.

[dramatic music]

[tires screeching]

Operator? Give me the police.

Yes, emergency, please.

[instrumental music]

Well, we can go over the whole thing again

but there just isn't anything listed for the 17th.

Then try the 16th and the 18th.

Oh, Inspector--

Miss Parr, I know you're tired.

So am I, but it's important.

A matter of life and death?

It could be.

It probably is.

The 16th, Carfield property.

Two bedrooms, bath and a half, Manhattan Beach.

Out of city listing.

San Diego instrument company

Leased to Halpern & Company, Baltimore.

Halpern. May I see that?

Plant facility dismantled

all equipment removed or unusable.

Call Converse in San Diego.

Have him get over there right away.

O'Brien, it's Lou.

I'll be at the airport in five minutes

I'll need a jet to take me to San Diego.

We've just received a teletype

from the Barstow police department.

A farmer spotted a camper earlier tonight

answering the description of the kidnap vehicle

at a spot approximately 20 miles west of Barstow.

Well, how many passengers, could he tell?

'Two men and a teenage boy.'

It was headed west but it's apparently changed direction.

Barstow police have covered the designated area.

No results.

Now, there are three unimproved highways they might have taken.

What's the most direct route to San Diego?

Sixty six to, uh, three ninety five.

Alright, alert the resident agent in Barstow.

If he spots it have him follow

without intercepting until further orders.

Take a helicopter out to Highway 395

establish contact with the SRA in Barstow

as soon as you're airborne.

Miss Parr, huh, thank you very much.

[instrumental music]

What time is it?

We're right on schedule.

Don't go any faster.

I feel like a sitting duck.

Take it easy. Easy.

Quiet.

Did you get the search warrant?

Yes, sir.

Let's go in.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[man on radio] This is a robbery.

'You will be shot if you move or interfere.'

'Face the wall.'

'Place your hands behind your backs.'

'Cooperate, it will save your lives.'

We could start checking every industrial facility

roughly similar to this one.

You've alerted to the major banks, factories with payrolls.

Mm-hmm. No unusual activity anywhere.

An outfit named Guardians Limited

has a security contract with most of the important firms

in the metropolitan area.

It's absolutely quiet in the control room.

What sort of a system do they have?

Central alarm plus closed circuit TV.

Griswold put together a team of experts.

Including a specialist in electronics.

Let's check back with Guardians.

What about irregular activity like changes in personnel?

No sir, everything's under control in all the monitors.

No reception difficulties?

Well, there was a little interference

on the Hill Dempsey line

but the picture held.

Hang on.

Would Hill Dempsey make sense as a target?

Well, they're foreign exchange brokers.

They keep much money on hand?

I should imagine about three or four million.

Are they open now?

Not the regular office, but..

...the guard should answer the night number.

See, if you can contact him?

Yes, sir.

I couldn't raise Hill Dempsey, but

Mr. Ward is on the relay from Washington.

Yes, Art?

Lewis, we've just been going over the MOs used by

Canada and Mitchell over the past few years.

One of our agents remembered a truck theft and m*rder

in San Diego with several points of similarity.

San Diego police had already forwarded

a set of partial prints

and we compared them to Canada's and Mitchell's.

'Yeah.'

Well, the prints on a metal flashlight

dropped after the theft of a Bancroft transfer truck

on June 17th are definitely Mitchell's.

'I've sent identification to San Diego already.'

Alright. Thanks, Arthur.

Is Bancroft transfer anywhere near Hill Dempsey?

No, it's not.

Any other interstate truck lines in the area?

Well, there's Mission Freight.

As a matter of fact, I think Mission Freight and Hill Dempsey

share the same loading platform.

Let's move on it.

Alert the police, ask them to seal off the area.

[intense music]

What's wrong with the elevator?

I wanted you to wait for me

you can get out right through there.

- You.. - Now, let me stall.

Everybody in that vault room saw me

they'll investigate, they'll..

...and they'll identify me, let me go with you.

- Are you out of your mind? - Please, please, Mr. Griswold.

- Just take me with you. - Alright.

[instrumental music]

Go ahead, Tom.

We're about a mile from the camper.

I have cars on the highway in front and behind them.

Looks like they stopped for dinner.

There's one man in the front seat

the other evidently is in the camper with the boy.

Alright, move in the moment

the boy is separated from both men.

- Yes, sir. - Be careful, Tom.

Walter Boyland.

'Nick Anders.'

'This is the FBI.'

'Put your hands over your head.'

'You're surrounded.'

Robert?

You're safe.

We're the FBI.

What, what about my dad?

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[car screeching]

[police siren]

What about the truck?

Empty, just one man.

Lloyd Mitchell.

You search the building I'll contact the Coast Guard.

Right.

[theme music]

Will you quit worrying?

We have made it.

So you'll get a free trip to Acapulco.

He saw me.

Twenty seconds more and we would have disappeared in the dark.

We'd have gotten away.

Voice to it.

This is Coast Guard 1-3-9-0.

The motor launch has been sighted.

Seen about four and a half miles

one-three-five degrees magnetic from Point Loma Light.

Can you put me on her deck?

[dramatic music]

- Chief? - Yes.

Key through, this is the FBI

'We're coming alongside.'

Captain! Power it on! We can make it.

Forget it, Dave, that cutter can blow us right out of the water.

We are gonna make a run for it.

Put a warning shot across their bow.

Stand by the mortar to fire a warning shot.

Fire one.

Hey!

Nobody stops me now. Nobody.

Understand?

[g*n shots]

Return their fire.

Commence fire with a .50.

Cease fire!

Stop! Stop the boat. Stop!

[instrumental music]

At 5:11 we were at the second floor elevator.

In a moment or two we would've gone down the stairs

but Van Doyle stopped me.

He wanted to go with us.

We've wasted 20-25 seconds

I don't know whether it would've made any difference.

Anyway, you saw me and that was it.

Would you type that up as soon as possible, please.

Lou, the boy and his mother are here.

They wanted to know if they could see Griswold.

'Of course.'

[dramatic music]

Hello, Max.

Hello, sweetheart.

I'm sorry.. So sorry.

No, no, listen..

...it had to end sometime.

Could have been a worse ending.

He's a good boy, Barbara.

'He did a fine job.'

There was a lot to start with.

[male narrator] David Spiers died off his wounds.

Walter Boyland and Nick Anders were convicted of kidnapping.

Max Griswold and seven others

were convicted of the armed robbery

of the Hill Dempsey Company.

As well as complicity in the m*rder of the

Bancroft truck driver.

They are servicing sentences totaling 240 years.

[theme music]

[music continues]
