[instrumental music]

Hi, Charlie.

Hey, George.

How she goin'?

Ah, as always, still lookin' for a good middle weight.

[cat meowing]

Hey, who's your good-looking friend?

Hey, oh..

How do you like that, huh?

Twenty-five hundred guys

and this little lady picked me.

Kid knows class, huh?

Yeah.

Hey, can I take her?

Hey?

Can I take her?

I don't know. What's she in for?

Same as me. as*ault.

She beat up a mouse.

Look at that fighter. Hey.

Well, he was a bum rap, huh?

as*ault's what she was born for, right?

Go ahead, take her.

[instrumental music]

- Ready for the road work? - Yes.

Attaboy.

[dramatic music]

How do you feel?

Once you are awake, you'll look good.

I need some money, George.

Drop me off at the airport.

I will pay you back when I get a job.

Look, Charlie, I have talked with the commission.

There's a chance you can be reinstated.

What? Prelims? Tank towns?

Charlie, you've been out of touch.

You mean, I was put out when that girl got on the stand.

[cat meowing]

I was number five in the world, George.

I could've have took that crown if that match had gone through.

You know it. Sports writers knew it.

Everybody knew it.

Don't talk to me about prelims.

Put that cat down and listen, will you?

I used to say to her..

"Sweety, hey, why don't you cut out?

I play too rough for you?"

And she purred, huh?

She said, "I know what I'm doing, Charlie."

The cat or the girl?

The girl.

You shouldn't have beat her like that.

She shouldn't have clawed me.

Should she, baby darling?

[yowling]

I, I can't believe it.

Is, is that the airport bit?

You wanna go back there?

Yes, sir.

So you can k*ll her

because she sent you up?

- What are you doing? - Get out my car.

- Oh, George. - Go on.

Look, Charlie, I love you like a brother

so I'm not gonna turn you into the police.

But I'm going to tell the cops to keep an eye on you.

So if you had the brains you were born with

you would hike as fast as you can in the other direction.

Now go on.

[intense music]

[cat meowing]

[George] Charlie, Charlie.

[meowing]

[intense music]

[instrumental music]

George Trenton died soon after he'd been found

by two state policemen on routine patrol.

But he had lived long enough to identify his assailant

and to reveal that Charles Nyack was headed

for the nearest airport.

A check of flight manifest indicated that a passenger

answering Nyack's description was en route at that moment

to a city on the eastern seaboard.

Because the suspect had crossed state lines

local police immediately contacted the FBI

to enter the case under provisions

of the unlawful flight statute.

Mr. Ward, I am getting Inspector Erskine

for you now, line one.

Where'd they locate him, at the airport?

On the way.

Thanks, Jean.

Is the traffic usually this heavy after rush hours, Dale?

Always.

I understand the last expressway was obsolete

before it even left the drawing board.

Megalopolis with a vengeance.

[female dispatcher] 'Dispatcher to Twenty-One.'

Twenty-One.

Ready with the Washington call. Go ahead.

- Hello, Lewis? - 'Yes, Arthur?'

How far from the airport are you now?

Less than ten minutes.

'And when does your flight leave for Washington?'

Alright now, listen carefully, Lewis.

Officially, you are still between assignments

but you are gonna be the senior agent present

when an unlawful flight m*rder fugitive

lands up there in about fifteen minutes.

KBL Flight 206.

'Have you got one of SAC Manning's agents with you?'

Yes, Dale Grant.

'Well, I'll have Manning send another agent'

'out to the airport.'

'You make the arrest and turn the subject over'

'to Grant and the other agents, and come on home.'

Right.

Subject's name is Charles Nyack.

He signed the name N. Charles when he bought the ticket.

He's a professional fighter.

He beat up a man, and the man died.

So the State charge is now m*rder.

He is about 6 feet, 170 pounds, dark curly hair.

He also served two years for as*ault

and was just released on parole.

We're having his record reviewed

at the State Penitentiary.

I'll notify you as soon we get the details.

'That's about it. Thanks very much.'

'Have a nice flight home.'

- I'll see you tomorrow. - 'Right.'

Twenty-One to dispatcher.

Go ahead, Twenty-One.

I have a message for Central Airport Security.

'Yes?'

Request cooperation in apprehending

fugitive Charles Nyack, now aboard KBL Airways Flight 206.

[instrumental music]

[pilot] 'May I have your attention please?'

'We are now making our landing approach at Municipal Airport.'

'KBL was pleased to have you aboard'

'and we hope you'll be flying with us again soon.'

Sir, you have to fasten your seat..

[cat meowing]

I guess you wouldn't believe me

if I said that was my stomach growling, huh?

I guess I wouldn't.

Well, suppose, I told you that this strange cat

just come walking up the aisle.

Did you bring it with you?

Ah, yeah.

You know that's strictly against regulations.

Oh, what do you want to do? You want to go back and start over?

Open the window and throw her out?

Hey, miss, uh, listen, I wanna get to Meralta Terrace.

Now what do I do? Do I, do I take a limousine or what?

Meralta..

No, I think a cab would probably be your best bet.

There's a stand by the baggage claim area.

- Alright, thank you. - Mm-hmm.

Okay.

Hey, come on, simmer down, simmer down.

Meow.

Yeah, that's the trouble with you.

You got a big mouth.

[instrumental music]

[classical music]

- Virginia? - Hi.

What the heck are the you doing here?

I thought you were supposed to be getting dressed.

Oh, what time is it?

About 8:00.

Well, when's Bob picking you up?

I changed my mind. I'm not going out.

It's alright, I phoned him.

You did?

I told him I had a headache.

I happen to have a headache.

Turn off the set. Let's talk.

Oh, mother.

[classical music]

Darling, Bob's a very patient boy

but he's going to get tired of this foolishness.

Let him.

- It's not foolishness. - I know.

I didn't mean foolishness I meant..

You told me just the other night you'd finally found someone

you could trust and love.

Katie, I'm not your little girl anymore.

Well, sure you are.

But you're worried over a ghost and..

I can't think how in the world I can help you.

I don't need help.

Katie..

What do you want from me?

I mean, when I was a teenager

I-I wasn't even allowed to look at a boy.

It always convents and private schools.

Now, all of a sudden I--

And I was wrong.

I'm sorry.

Maybe you could've handled a Charles Nyack

if I'd had more sense, but Bob is a..

I don't acquaint Bob with Charles Nyack.

I'm not afraid of Charlie and--

[Katharine] 'I didn't say you were.'

I think it's Virginia Lamberth you're afraid of.

Oh, Katie, come on.

Then why are you locking yourself up

in this crazy jail for?

I think I'm going to go to bed.

Virginia?

You made a mistake.

You chased after an ignorant lout

who wasn't fit to shine your shoes.

Alright, you got into trouble.

You've had a terrible experience but it's over.

You don't have to go on punishing yourself forever--

- I'm not punish-- - Baby?

Believe me, this isn't the way.

You've said to yourself..

"Okay, Virginia, you went after the wrong man

"and ended up in the hospital.

"So, uh, let's not make any more decisions.

"Let's just...lock this great hulking, dumb girl

"up in the house.

So that she can't get into any more trouble."

'But, darling, there's always trouble.'

There's always risk.

You can't wrap a house around you like a blanket

and just...abdicate.

- You wanna bet? - Virginia?

Katie, I am sick of pain.

I'm sick of courtrooms and operating rooms

and melodrama.

And maybe this is abdication. I don't care.

Um, maybe it's jail. What's the difference?

I'm not asking you to share it with me.

You get yourself a boyfriend, and you go out.

But whatever you do, just leave me alone!

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

- Inspector Erskine? - Yes.

Over at Chief of Airport Security.

Glad to meet you. This is Tom Colby, Bryan Durant.

How are you? Thank you.

TBL206 came in ten minutes early tonight.

Passengers had already disembarked

when I got your message.

What?

But I got men on all the exits.

They have orders to detain anybody

that even looks like a boxer, so he can't get out.

- You wanna come in? - Please.

[instrumental music]

Miss? What was that?

I don't know.

[instrumental music]

[woman gasps]

Meet me at baggage claim.

[screaming]

Please, folks, it's just a temporary power failure.

'There's really nothing to be alarmed about.'

'Please remain calm.'

[dramatic music]

[theme music]

[Bryan Durant] 'Twenty-One to dispatcher.'

Twenty-One to dispatcher.

Calls will be backed up for a while.

When you're able to get through

tell him I wanna speak to Mr. Ward.

It's major power failure. Four states are affected.

[instrumental music]

- Any sign of Nyack? - Nothing.

See if you can find a stewardess who was on his section.

- We'll check the other exits. - Yes, sir.

Try Mr. Ward.

Well?

Well, what?

You got a fare, Sam.

Let's move this junk heap outta here.

You're puttin' me on.

So what you want me to do, sign an affidavit?

I'm a customer.

You're a nut.

- Hey, Sam. - Look..

[grunts]

[honks]

[instrumental music]

[intercom buzzes]

[clears throat] Yes?

[woman on phone] 'Long distance has a Dr. Partridge waiting.'

Dr. Partridge?

[woman on phone] 'It's in regard to Charles Nyack.'

Oh, yes. What about the airport?

[woman on phone] 'The lines are still tied up.'

Alright then. Well, keep trying.

Put Dr. Partridge on, please.

[Dr. Partridge on phone] 'Mr. Ward, Dr. Partridge.'

I understand you've been making some inquiries

about a former prisoner of ours named Nyack?

Yes, that's right, doctor.

The warden thought I might be able to help.

I'm on the psychiatric staff here.

Uh-huh. Was Nyack a patient of yours?

I talked to him on many occasions

but, uh, he-he's a very disturbed young man, Mr. Ward.

I personally felt he should've been transferred

to a hospital for the criminally insane.

I see.

He was trouble in prison then?

No. In many ways he was the ideal prisoner.

Followed the rules, did the work he was assigned to.

But then you see, there are only men in this prison

and he has an ability to feign amiability towards men.

What do you mean by "Feign?"

Actually Nyack doesn't relate positively to many human beings

as far as I can see.

But the pathological hatred is towards women.

It started a long time ago, but at present

it's focused on the woman he believes put him here.

That would be the victim of the as*ault?

'Yes, sir.'

Do you think he might attack her again?

I think it might occur to him.

Nyack's a strange one even to me, Mr. Ward.

He'd sit across the desk from me with his cat.

He's gentle as a little boy.

And then he'd start talking about seeing

Miss Lamberth on the witness stand

and her taking his championship away.

And I dreaded the day we'd have to open the doors for him.

[instrumental music]

[man on radio] 'And the power failure which reportedly blacked out'

'the entire city, has according to company officials'

'been the result of a falling domino effect.'

'That is, one overload growing on to another.'

[knock at door]

Come in, Katie.

[man on radio] 'Civil defense authorities again wish to emphasize'

'that there is no cause for serious alarm.'

'Our mobile units in the field report'

'that temporary power has already been restored'

'in many areas.'

'But citizens are urged to stay off the streets'

'and to avoid using telephones'

'except in cases of extreme emergency.'

'Stay tuned to this station for further..'

[click]

Well, can't say this hasn't been an exciting evening.

I'm sorry I yelled at you that way.

Hm.

I'm sorry too.

I suppose it's the cliche of the world

but it's the truth.

All I really want for you is what's best for you.

I know.

Don't worry, I'm doing what's best for me.

Has Bob phoned?

No, they say not to use the phones.

Virginia..

...look me in the eye.

Aren't you a little sorry you didn't let him

come on over tonight?

- Katie.. - Well, I am.

I could use a good booming male voice around here.

These are the times when I wish we had closer neighbors.

This is America, darling.

There aren't any wild animals running loose outside.

Virginia..

How would you like to sleep in my room tonight?

Well, that's fine. Where will you sleep?

What?

[chuckles] You really are scared, aren't you?

Well, yes.

Why don't you sleep in here with me?

You sure you don't mind?

I'll get my things.

[dramatic music]

[indistinct chatter]

[man on radio] 'Your attention, please.'

'Attention.'

'We have switched to limited emergency power.'

'All outgoing flights have been canceled.'

'All incoming flights have been rerouted'

'to unaffected airfields.'

'Blankets, cold sandwiches and soft drinks'

'are available at the reservation counters.'

[indistinct chatter]

'Thank you for your cooperation.'

[indistinct chatter]

Lou, this is Miss Jennings. Inspector Erskine.

- Hello. - Miss Jennings.

You had a passenger traveling

under the name of N. Charles, do you remember him?

The boxer.

[Erskine] 'Do you have any idea where he might've gone?'

I'm sorry.

Did you notice if he, uh..

spoke to any of the other passengers?

I don't think so. He was sitting by himself.

He smuggled a cat aboard.

- A cat? - Yes, a Siamese.

He seemed terribly fond of it.

Did he mention anything about being met by anybody?

No.

Well, he did ask me about limousine service.

In regard to what?

Well, he wanted to know how to get to Meralta Terrace.

And I told him it would be easier for him to take a cab.

- Thank you. - Thank you.

See how Grant's coming to my Washington call

and have him locate Meralta Terrace on a map for us.

[indistinct chatter]

[music continues]

[man groaning]

Help me.

FBI. See if you can find a doctor for this man, will you?

What happened?

A guy stifled me.

He stole my hack.

Was he about six feet tall? Uh..

I don't know.

He could have been..

What's the number of your cab?

Seven-seven-seven.

Lucky.

Your name?

Bossio.

B-O-S-S-I-O.

Lou..

This may be a touchier problem than we thought.

Now what?

Grant was finally able to contact your headquarters.

And he came up with more information on Nyack.

Mr. Ward thinks that there may be a special reason

why he came to this city.

Nyack tried to k*ll a girl named Virginia Lamberth.

She testified against him.

He's been quoted to saying that, he'd finish the job next time.

What's her address?

She lives there with her mother Katharine.

Just the two women alone.

We tried to call, but we couldn't get through.

Any chance of getting a helicopter?

No, sir. I tried, not available.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[meowing]

[dramatic music]

[telephone ringing]

- Yes? - 'SAC Manning, Mr. Ward.'

Put him on.

[Manning] 'Mr. Ward, I just wanna let you know what we have so far.'

This city is completely paralyzed.

But no attempt has made to take unusual advantage of the fact.

Did you talk to the local authorities?

I've talked to the governor, I've talked to the mayor.

National guard's on its way.

The police and the fire units are either on emergency standby

or in the field.

You have any idea what caused the failure?

No, sir, nothing definite.

The electric companies checked out its lines.

The consensus seems to be that some kind of malfunction

at the power source created an overload.

'There was absolutely no indication of sabotage.'

Ah, how long they expect it to last?

No idea. At least several hours more.

What's the mood up there?

How are the people reacting?

Oh, uh.. Excitement, confusion.

But no wild-eyed hysteria.

There's no-no panic that can't be contained.

Ah, there've been a few assaults

there's been some looting.

But 99% of the people

seem to be trying to make the best of

a very inconvenient situation.

Well, that's good.

Have you heard anything from Inspector Erskine, or Nyack?

No, sir. Nyack has not been picked up as far as we know.

We've been trying to get through to the Lamberth residence

but no luck there either.

Alright, Manning. Thank you very much.

'Yes, sir.'

[instrumental music]

Let's see if you can clear some kind of a exit lane.

Meralta Terrace.

It's only about five miles from here.

Mm-hmm. Thanks.

Twenty-One to dispatch.

Go ahead, Twenty-One.

Please request police to put out an immediate APB

on Triangle cab 777.

Driver of the stolen vehicle may be fugitive Charles Nyack.

Possible destination 1200 Meralta Terrace.

Nyack is to be considered armed and dangerous

and should be approached with caution.

Will you acknowledge?

"Triangle cab 777 reportedly stolen by armed fugitive

"Charles Nyack.

Possible destination 1200 Meralta Terrace."

Oh, one moment please, Twenty-One, SAC Manning.

Inspector, we'll try to fetch you information

but all patrolmen have been assigned to anti-looting

and emergency details.

And all our people here are ordered to investigate

the power failure.

The cab's important, Manning.

I want it on local APB

if somebody has to walk it over to police radio.

[Manning on radio] 'Yes, sir.'

Have you been able to contact the Lamberth's residence?

[Manning on radio] 'No, sir, for some reason the phones in that area'

'are temporarily out of order.'

They should be fixed shortly.

We've asked the police to try and get a car through

but they can't promise us a thing.

Alright, Grant will take over the Lamberth telephone calls.

I'll leave him here at the airport.

Colby and I will head for Meralta Terrace.

How many radio stations are on the air?

[Manning on radio] 'Most of them.'

Ask them to broadcast a warning to Mrs. Lamberth

as soon as they can schedule it.

Right. Good luck.

Couple of alleys are open, if we can make it to the next corner.

But we'll have to blast to get out of this parking.

Get the bullhorn, will you?

You got the Lamberth's telephone number?

Yes, sir.

Keep trying until somebody answers.

Explain the situation and tell them not to open the door

for anyone unless he positively identifies himself

as a police officer, or one of us.

Right.

Tom, you got plenty of room to pull in here.

Let's go straight down the sidewalk.

[instrumental music]

This is the FBI.

Please clear the sidewalk. Thank you very much.

Please clear the sidewalk.

Stand clear please.

Stand clear please.

Thank you very much.

[music continues]

[female dispatcher] 'Dispatcher to Twenty-One.'

Twenty-One.

Police bulletin on Triangle cab 777.

The vehicle has been located at

the intersection of Ninth and Jackson.

It was reported abandoned and blocking traffic.

Ninth and Jackson. Thank you.

Another tie up.

Block and a half away.

Stay with the car. I'll go on ahead.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

Tom.

Yes, sir.

How's the traffic?

Uh, it's very bad, Lou.

Apparently, they had a couple of minor accidents up ahead.

Any word from Grant?

[Tom on radio] 'No, sir.'

Alright.

I'm going on to Meralta Terrace.

Join me there as soon as possible.

[Tom on radio] 'Alright.'

[intense music]

[music continues]

[rustling]

[music continues]

Katie?

Baby, did you lock the den door?

What?

I think there's someone downstairs.

Tsk, oh, Katie.

Well, listen.

Katie, will you please come back to bed?

I locked the entire house.

I don't see how you can sleep

on a-on a night like this anyway.

I can sleep on a night like this because I'm tired

and there's nothing else to do, and all good monsters

are home, asleep, where they should be.

I know you always think I'm imagining things.

But some morning, we're going to go downstairs

there won't be anything left but the four walls.

Would you like me to turn the radio on?

Would you like a little music?

No, thank you, ma.

Alright, alright.

[meowing] Ahh!

[music continues]

- What's the matter with you? - 'Oh.'

Oh..

Look who's here.

Poor little baby.

[gasps] How about poor little Kate?

You don't know what that felt like.

- Oh, sweetheart. - How did that..

- Baby.. - Little beast get in here?

Oh.

Katie.

Now, I'm not going to let every little..

Stop it.

- Katie, please. - I'll--

Leave the window open. You'll suffocate us.

You know, I've a good mind to go back to my room

and just let you stay here alone.

Fine, go ahead.

No, I-I wouldn't do that to you.

Now where are you going?

To put the cat out, mother.

Oh, wait a minute.

- Okay? - Okay.

[instrumental music]

[telephone ringing]

[meowing]

Mother, could you get that?

Alone?

Well, then you take the cat, and I'll get it.

Well, w-why don't we both answer it in the den?

It's closer anyway.

[music continues]

[ringing continues]

Hello?

Miss Virginia Lamberth?

Yes?

[Dale] 'Miss Lamberth--'

[thud]

[dramatic music]

Hello?

Are you there?

Who is it?

I don't know. Hello?

[meowing continues]

- It's dead. - Well, what happened?

[sighs] Don't know. We were cut off I guess.

[intense music]

[theme music]

Let's put pussycat out and try again.

Virginia, are you really sleepy?

No, not really. Why?

Well, uh, what time is it?

Can't be very late, nine, ten.

[cat meowing]

- You know what we ought to do? - What?

We ought to have a drink and sit out in the garden.

Do you want to?

I think it'd be a heavenly idea.

[sighs] Alright. I'll get rid of the cat.

Scoot. Now go on.

Go on.

[cat meows]

Look out! She's coming back in.

[Virginia] Oh, come here.

Come back here.

Hey, kitty.

Kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty.

Virginia!

Be right down, mother.

[cat meowing]

[Virginia] 'Come here, kitty. Kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty.'

[pounding on door]

[Katharine] 'Virginia!'

'Virginia!'

Virginia!

'Virginia!'

- Virginia! - Excuse me

[screams]

I'm Inspector Erskine with the FBI.

I'm sorry if I alarmed you.

FBI?

I'm sorry to be so skittish, but what is the FBI doing here?

- Are you Mrs. Lamberth? - Yes.

Could we go in, please?

I'm afraid I've locked myself out.

Uh..

Virginia.

Kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty.

Kitty.

[intense music]

Why doesn't she answer me?

Are there any other doors open?

- No. - Or windows?

I can't.. Would you like to break one?

Mrs. Lamberth, we have a reason to believe that Charles Nyack

may be inside.

Charlie's in prison.

No, he was released today.

Now, how can I get in?

Oh. Upstairs bedroom..

In the-in the back. Window's open.

In the back. In the back there.

FBI, Nyack.

[intense music]

[g*nsh*t]

[cat meowing]

Miss Lamberth.

Yes.

'Are you alright?'

Yes, except for my ankle.

[Tom on radio] 'Lou, come in please.'

Excuse me.

Yes, Tom.

Oh, Lou, do you see what I see?

[Erskine] 'I don't know. What do you see?'

Try your lights.

[instrumental music]

[theme music]

And you had no idea he was around here at all

until your daughter screamed?

Well, as a matter of fact, I did hear something down here

but then Virginia always says I'm imagining things, so..

Virginia used to believe you were imagining things, mother.

But I think Virginia's come to realize a few things.

There are going to be some changes made.

Really?

Really.

[footsteps]

Crew's been all through the house

there's no further sign of fire.

Thank you.

And the lineman asked me

to tell you the phone's working again.

Oh, it is?

- I can use it now? - Go right ahead.

[dialing]

- Whom are you calling? - Whom do you think?

'Hello, Bob?'

Well, Nyack's been booked.

What a strange character.

When I told him that Trenton had died, he didn't turn a hair.

When they let him know at the hospital that the cat

had been left behind

he cried like a baby.

[cat meowing]

Well..

Huh.

You look kinda sad yourself.

Let's see if we can find you a new friend, huh?

[Marvin Miller] Charles Bernard Nyack recovered from his wound

and was tried and convicted in state court

for the m*rder of George Trenton.

He is currently a life sentence without possibility of parole.

[theme music]
