[instrumental music]
What do you think? Bad tip?
Well, he made the appointment.
If he needs insulin, he'll keep it.
"If."
William Judson, FBI.
Willy! Watch it!
[g*nshots]
[tires screeching]
[intense music]
Go!
[tires screeching]
Was that Macklin?
At least we know he's on the West Coast.
Did you see who picked him up?
Blonde nurse in her 20s.
California license H-Y-E-4-5-1. Get it in the radio, right away.
How'd you see the girl, Lou? Hostage or another victim?
I don't know, she's a girl in trouble
either way.
[instrumental music]
[groaning]
[Marvin Miller] "The FBI."

Also starring, Philip Abbot.
William Reynolds.

Henry Silva.

Lynda Day.
And Lynn Bari as Chino's Widow.
Tonight's episode, "Line Of Fire."
[instrumental music]
On September 18th, one of the FBI's ten most wanted
criminals, William Judson, was apprehended
by agents in Los Angeles.
Judson and his close friend and partner, Richard Macklin
were both long-time members of the Miami Crime Syndicate.
And recently, Judson had indicated a strong desire
to break with la cosa nostra.
He had hinted at a willingness to give evidence
of the syndicate's ties to legitimate business.
It was vital for the FBI to take both men alive.
But now, Judson was dying.
[grunts]
Tell...tell him..
Tell him what, Judson?
Tell him I...I-I got..
He knows, he saw you.
No.
No, he's..
He's in...Miami.
[female #1] 'Dr. Marsden, Dr. Marsden.'
'Please report to surgery immediately.'
Lou, Washington on the phone.
Anything from Durant?
They lost the car on 18th.
Tom..
...you think it's possible that Judson never saw Macklin?
Well, maybe.
There's a lot of confusion.
Why?
Oh, he thinks Macklin's in Florida.
You mean the meeting wasn't arranged?
Not by Judson, anyway.
Who did he think was behind the g*n?
- Erskine. - Lewis, how did it happen?
Well, we had the man in custody, Art.
Macklin opened fire and hit him accidentally.
Are you sure it was Macklin?
Unless he's got a twin.
Well, he may have at that, because he can't be
two places at the same time.
He was reliably reported to be back in Miami
as late as yesterday.
There was a mafia family sit down
and he was supposed to attend.
What's the latest information we have on that?
Miami office is sounding out informants on that now.
Art, see if you can pick up anything about a contract
on Macklin or Judson or both of them.
Judson seemed to think that whoever
did this sh**ting was sh**ting at him.
Uh-huh.
And I wonder, I suppose that's why
Macklin was there, to warn Judson about a hit.
It could be.
'What about that hostage that Macklin is holding?'
Well, the Department of Motor Vehicles
is tracing the license now.
The girl was wearing a nurse's uniform.
Chances are she was on her way to work here.
Uh-huh, any sign of them?
Not yet, Macklin probably knows
his way around Los Angeles pretty well, he was born here.
And that's going to make it more difficult.
'Yeah.'
Alright, Lewis, thank you and good luck and, uh..
I'll get in touch with you as soon as I can.
[instrumental music]
Right, on Pico.
Oh, but listen..
Don't talk, angel baby, just drive.
Let's find a freeway out of this town.
C-c-could I at least ask why the police are after you?
No.
Go on, go on!
But the light is--
Don't stop, run it!
[honking]
[tires screeching]
Beautiful. Just like the movies.
California license, H-Y-E-4-5-1 was issued to Miss Carol Grant.
I checked the head nurse's office and the Grant girl
is on the staff here.
She worked a late shift last night, uh..
but she made an appointment with the head nurse
for four o'clock this afternoon.
The head nurse say what it was about?
No, she didn't know
but I talked to, uh, Miss Grant's best friend
another woman named Jane Walden.
I'll be sending her down here in a few minutes.
She, uh, said that, uh..
she thought this was going to be Miss Grant's last day
she was coming in to resign.
Why?
She said she was afraid, uh..
she wasn't fit for the job.
She couldn't take the pressure.
[intense music]
Two in a row.
Looks like we're running into a little bad luck today..
...nurse.
Nurse what?
- Carol Grant. - Hmm.
Turn left.
[music continues]
Okay, get out.
Please, couldn't you let me go now?
Out!
[music continues]
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
Nurse Grant, you're lucky I need you.
Please, don't make me drive anymore.
Well, I sure can't drive
and keep an eye on you at the same time.
Can I, angel baby?
Now, get up!
[instrumental music]
Let's try North Broadway.
There's got to be a freeway entrance some place.
[instrumental music]
- LA-1. - 'Go ahead, LA-1.'
We have a truck driver at Olympic and 12th street.
His truck was almost hit by a car
closely resembling the subject vehicle
at Maple and 15th street.
Subject vehicle is north bound.
Notify the police and our agents in the area.
[instrumental music]
Nothing ever changes.
I used to come here when I was a kid.
- You gone deaf, lady? - What?
Stay with it, nurse.
You look like you're off into another world.
- 'Talk to me.' - Oh, please, I just..
I used to watch the trucks roll in with lettuce, tomatoes.
Some of the tomatoes as big as footballs.
I used to boost them.
- Boost? - Boost, steal.
I used to boost the big ones.
Long time ago..
You run, run.
Think you're getting further away..
...and all the time you're circling back.
[instrumental music]
[telephone ringing]
Hello.
Yes, he is. Just a minute.
It's Mr. Ward.
Yes, Arthur?
Lewis, your hunt seems to have paid of.
Informants report that both Macklin and Judson
are slated for execution
by the syndicate.
Macklin disappeared from the Miami area late last night.
So, he was evidently trying to warn Judson.
Yes?
[Arthur] 'Both men might be willing to talk now.'
[male #1] 'Lou..'
[Arthur] 'This could be the break we've been looking for.'
Uh, Art, hang on a minute, will you?
[dramatic music]
Judson's dead.
Oh.
You think you can take Macklin alive?
He's our last chance now.
- We'll do our best. - 'Goodbye, Lewis.'
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
Which way?
You pick it.
- Well, I.. - Pick it!
- Is this alright? - You're taking me home, nurse.
[man on radio] 'News at the half hour on station KZBL.'
'FBI agents and local police are continuing their search'
'for one of the nation's'
'ten most wanted fugitives, Richard Macklin.'
'Less than twenty-five minutes ago, Macklin, thirty-one'
'shot it out with FBI agents in a desperate g*n battle'
'in a hospital parking lot.'
'He made his escape after attempting to free'
'Cosa Nostra hoodlum'
'William Judson from FBI custody.'
'And here's a late report.'
'Judson wounded in the g*n fight by a ricocheting b*llet'
'has just died on the operating table.'
[instrumental music]
I should have let them take him.
They were all around
and I opened up before I knew what I was doing.
Well, he couldn't have done another stretch anyway.
Get picked up in another twenty years..
...one way or another.
Prison must be awful.
It's not so bad when you're young.
Fifteen, sixteen.. It's kind of interesting.
You pull a job, you get busted.
You post bail...and you pull a few more jobs..
...to pay the legal eagles.
- What? - The attorneys.
Then you're an old man like Billy.
If you can't take a long fall...you can't.
How old was he, your friend?
Forty-one.
Alright, keep after it.
Lou, this is Miss Grant's friend, Jane Walden.
Inspector Erskine.
- Miss Walden. - Have you found her?
Not yet.
Honestly, this is just like a nightmare, I-I can't believe it.
Miss Walden, have you ever seen this man before?
No. Is that the..
No, I haven't.
Is Carol a Los Angeles girl?
No, she's from Portland.
She just came down here to take her training.
That's how we met each other.
Oh.
Well, you told Mr. Colby
you thought she was planning to resign today.
Yes.
What gave you that impression?
Well, she's been sort of unhappy about nursing for a long time.
It's funny, she was wonderful in class.
You know, with the books and charts and everything.
But it's, uh, different in a ward.
You mean when she has to deal with people rather than books?
Well, she just goes all to pieces in an emergency.
[telephone ringing]
Hmm.
Colby.
It's Durant.
Well, thank you, Miss Walden.
Yes, Bryan?
Lou, we found Miss Grant's car near Pico in Los Angeles.
No sign of Macklin or the girl.
If there's a direction, it seems to be roughly eastward.
That's right.
He was born in East LA, he may still have contacts there.
Alright, let's concentrate on the east side.
Pull in every available agent and coordinate with the police.
Are there any cars reported stolen around there?
Not yet.
We're checking with the tenants in the immediate area now.
I'll be right over.
I want every address we ever had on him.
Names of relatives, girlfriends, local hangouts.
Anything that might come back to a man running.
[instrumental music]
So, when my mother took off, her sister raised me.
I didn't speak English until I was five.
Talk to me.
I spoke Spanish.
My mother was Mexican.
Macklin?
My dad was Welsh.
Well, uh, what happened to him?
Beat me. I never met the man.
Right on first, Miss Grant.
Uh, we still haven't located anyone who's missing a car, Lou.
But there is a man over there. I think you oughta talk to him.
Alright. Any sign of blood in Miss Grant's car?
No. No, blood. No sign of any struggle in the girl's car.
Apparently, she's playing it cool.
Well, let's hope she can keep it up.
Keep it up?
She's got a reputation for being unreliable in a crisis.
If he provokes her into k*lling her
he'll have a number one over his head
and we'll never take him alive.
Mr. Perez?
This is Inspector Erskine.
Would you told him what you told us before, please?
Well..
The agents asked me to come out.
You know, to see if my car was okay.
It was. Still here.
That's right over there.
I did notice that the car that was parked here before..
...uh, it was gone.
Maybe the owner took it, I don't know. They..
Well, how long ago did you see it there, Mr. Perez?
It was there when I got here.
It's been about, 40 minutes.
Mm-hmm. Can you describe it?
Sure, man. This guy parks here everyday.
Tan.
More paint on it than I got on mine.
- What kind of body? - Station wagon. Ford.
Put out an APB on it.
Stress as much as possible.
Keep looking for the owner.
There's P.D. Romero's place.
We used to take the street car to Venice.
I remember..
[siren wailing]
[intense music]
Easy.
What do I do?
Pull over and leave it in drive.
[instrumental music]
May I see your diver's license please?
I just know you won't believe this, officer
but...I left my license in my other bag.
And yours, sir?
Sure, officer.
[intense music]
[screaming]
Go!
At the corner.
Two blocks down, and right.
Unit 21, First and Conicks.
We're both hit.
Don't make me drive anymore.
I can't.
Let me go, please.
Help me.
I stopped one.
Take a look.
It's an artery. You'll have to go to a hospital.
Look, don't tell me what to do.
But you can feel it for yourself.
Blood from an artery spurts.
Blood from a vein flows.
Okay, so fix it.
What?
There's a pressure point here.
You hold your finger there.
And you can stop the bleeding.
But a doctor's got to treat and suture that wound.
Alright. Out.
Please.
I had a girlfriend
who lived around here once.
It ain't far to walk.
No, I-I-I can't, I can't.
I can't. You don't understand.
I-I've never had the responsibility before.
I-I've never been a church nurse.
Sweetheart, you've got it now.
'Out.'
[theme music]
[siren wailing]
How does it look for 'em?
One critical, one fair.
Macklin's been wounded, the girl's still with him.
Now, here's the information you wanted, Lou.
Last permanent alley address, 1518 Roanne.
He was living with an aunt at the time
and the house itself was torn down
several years ago.
Does the aunt still live in the area?
Uh, she died in the September of 1953.
She was listed on his first arrest record
as the only living relative.
And she died when?
September '53.
Subject charged with destruction of property
resisting arrest, expelled East 3rd Street Junior High.
September '53.
Barricaded himself in the auditorium.
Sounds like a one man riot.
- No other addresses? - No, sir.
Did he belong to a street g*ng?
Uh, yeah, The Dragons.
Uh, they were pretty well cut up in the 1958 street w*r.
They disbanded the same year.
- Any of their leaders left? - 'No, sir.'
Where they used to meet?
Third avenue. A bar called Chino's.
- Let's see if it's still there. - Sure.
[instrumental music]
[bell rings]
Yeah?
Mary, I've already fed the baby.
Come on in.
[bell ringing]
Well, come on.
Hi, Evelyn.
Richard?
Yeah, Richard.
Come on in.
Gee, I thought you were the babysitter.
You going out?
Oh, no, no, no. I-I was just going out with a girlfriend.
Anybody else living with ya?
- Are you married or anything? - Oh, no, no.
- Could you help me please? - Oh.
I heard about this, but they didn't say anything
about that on the radio.
It just happened.
I wouldn't have come here
if there was any place else to go.
Oh, listen. That's alright.
Now, don't you worry about that.
I'll get you some cloth.
Oh.
You need a doctor.
Please, let me call the doctor.
Sweetheart, will ya quit?
But you'll die.
I don't have the training to..
What are you talking about? You're a nurse.
Well..
I suppose I mean the experience then.
I just graduated.
Someone's always helped me.
But you know what has to be done.
Well..
Yes.
Evelyn..
Have you got a bottle?
[Evelyn] 'Yeah, I'll bring it.'
Man.
They built ten thousand freeways in this town..
...and I can't find one to take me out.
Must be ten thousand nurses..
...and I get you.
Here.
- Forget the glass. - Oh.
Now what?
Well, is-is-is there a drug store around here?
Yeah. Tori's.
Would he ask a lot of questions
if you wanted surgical scissors
and surgical thread?
No, no.
[baby cooing]
I'll-I'll be right back.
Look, you're gonna be okay.
[instrumental music]
Sure.
I'm in great hands.
Great.
[instrumental music]
[guitar music]
[glass clinks]
[indistinct chatter]
[music continues]
[male #1] 'Yes, sir.'
FBI. Are you the owner?
Well, I get a piece of the action.
I understand a Richard Macklin used to hang out here.
- Macklin? - 'Yes. Do you know him?'
Yeah, well, I-I haven't seen him in, like, well, ten years.
Any of his friends still here?
Man, I wouldn't know about that.
I didn't hang around with them cats too much.
Then, you're not Chino?
No. Chino's dead.
- He left us back in.. - '63.
Yeah, '63. That's right, ma.
You remember everything, huh?
When I want to.
When it's worth it.
- Another one for the lady. - You bet.
Were you a friend of Chino's?
I'm Chino's widow.
[speaking foreign language]
Did you know Macklin?
He was a kid. He's been gone a long time.
Do you think he would come back here if you were in trouble?
No.
Him and Chino used to sh**t pool. That's all.
Why would he come here?
He's been wounded.
You go look for the blonde then.
What blonde?
Evelyn something.
She was his girl?
She was his girl.
She was his girl, like I was Chino's wife.
[indistinct], you know.
Faithful, one man.
And when that man goes away
it's never the same.
You wait.
There may be other men.
A lot of other men.
But you'll never belong to 'em.
You wait.
Her last name would help. Can you think of it?
Maybe Thorne.
Would you have an address?
Somewhere in the neighborhood.
I never knew.
[music continues]
[dramatic music]
Is he okay?
[sighs] Yeah. I-I think he will be.
The b*llet went right through his shoulder
so it didn't hurt anything.
While if it had, he'd be dead by now.
Well...I guess that's it.
You sound surprised.
Well, this is a funny place for a graduation.
Hey!
I thought you said you were a real nurse.
I am.
Oh.
[dramatic music]
Hi.
Hi.
I've rinsed the blood out of your shirt.
Good.
How am I doing?
Well, you'd want to be in a hospital.
But you stopped the bleeding?
- And you sewed up the artery? - Yeah.
Well, how about that?
Yeah, how about that?
Richard, don't you think..
I gotta get out of here.
- It's dark, I can make it now. - Let me go with you.
How about the kid?
They're gonna be looking for a nurse.
You got something she can wear?
Yeah, she could use my tan suit.
I just got it from the cleaners.
Get it.
Thanks.
For helping me. But I can't let you go.
Your my free pass out of town.
No more pushing and screaming, nurse?
- Would it do any good? - Nope.
Well..
You could have cut out on me. When I went under a while ago.
Yeah, I guess I could have.
Why didn't you?
I don't know. I guess I was just too busy.
And after you finished?
You know, it's-it's wild, you've turned into my first patient.
I don't want anything to happen to you.
Here.
You can change in the bedroom.
- Well.. - Thanks, Evelyn.
Oh, Richard, there's parole cars out there everywhere.
Can't you make some kind of a deal to surrender?
We'll see.
I'd get you a lawyer I-I'd wait for you.
Richard.
I know you can't stay now.
But would you come back later?
If you can.
If I can.
[theme music]
[man on radio] 'LA-10.'
LA-10, go ahead.
'In regard to Evelyn Thorne LAPD listed petty theft arrest'
'against an Evelyn Thorne on 3166, case was dismissed'
'when the male complaint dropped the charge.'
Do you have an address?
'1856 East 3rd.'
Where is that in relation to East 3rd junior high?
'Within a block.'
Thank you. 10 clear.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
Macklin, those are police out there.
They'll k*ll you if you don't give yourself up.
They know you're with me.
They're not about to hurt you.
It hasn't changed very much.
You mean this was your school?
[chuckling] Funny.
The last time I was here, I had a g*n in my hand.
A zip g*n I made myself.
I came blasting out of the auditorium doors.
Man, they were coming at me from all sides.
I guess it hasn't changed much, has it?
[g*nf*re]
Macklin, this is the FBI.
'The school is surrounded.'
Come out with your hands raised.
Durant went on to the Thorne apartment
and found the nurse's uniform in a closet.
Evelyn Thorne admitted they'd been there.
She wants to talk to whoever's in charge.
- Where is she? - Durant's car.
They're out in the line of fire.
Miss Thorne, I'm Inspector Erskine.
I understand you wanted to talk to me.
Oh, yes. Is the nurse still with him?
As far as we know.
Well, he wouldn't hurt her.
You-you know, she saved his life.
I mean, she fixed his wound.
Oh, he told her that she had to but, oh, she fixed it real good.
Boy, had it been me, I would've flipped.
Then she's a nurse.
I guess that's the difference.
Anyway, what I wanted to say is
I think he'd come out if I asked him.
Would you let me try?
Bryan, bring me the horn, will you, please?
"Dance. Thursday night. Boy's gym. Ten cents."
It was a dime in my day too.
But it was more fun to bust in.
That fire bell always bugged me.
I always wanted to ring it.
[bell ringing]
[Evelyn] 'Richard, this is Evelyn.'
'Please come out for my sake.'
The-the policeman you shot, they're gonna be alright.
So for a good boy..
...all I get is 10 to 15 years, huh?
- Richard.. - Hey, FBI!
No deals! No deals!
Can you hear me?
If you want me, you're gonna come in here and get me.
We'll do just that if we have to, Macklin.
'But the girl saved your life.'
'Now why don't you return the favor and send her out?'
You really wanna save her?
Turn her loose, Macklin.
Hey, FBI!
Maybe we can make everybody happy.
How about a trade?
What trade?
You for her.
Come on in and keep me company.
After a while, we can ease on out.
You can drive me down Mexico way.
Or someplace.
- Lou, you know-- - 'Think about it.'
Take your time.
Nurse Grant and me will play a little Russian Roulette.
Or something.
Lou, how about some tear gas?
Not while he's got the girl there.
Listen to me, Macklin.
I'm coming in. I'll stop on the steps.
When you see me, send her out.
Lou..
Let's see the g*n go.
[intense music]
Okay.
But..
Are you alright, Miss Grant?
Yes.
[music continues]
Okay, FBI!
Over there.
Turn around.
[instrumental music]
Okay. Away from the wall.
You know, your girlfriend was right, Macklin.
The officers you shot are out of danger.
All you face is a fugitive warrant.
Maybe a charge of manslaughter.
Well, how about Billy Judson?
Is he out of danger?
The slug they took out of him was a .45.
That could be the manslaughter charge.
It was your b*llet that k*lled him.
I don't believe that.
Give me the g*n, Macklin.
There's no way on earth you can get out of here alive.
As long as you're with me
they're not gonna sh**t, pal.
They have their orders.
The minute you get one inch away from me
they'll fire.
They'd never risk it.
One inch.
Give me the g*n.
Move.
Oh, Richard, don't make it worse!
[g*nsh*t]
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
No, he didn't ask anyone else for help.
We went straight from the second car
to Miss Thorne's apartment.
Do you think that she was, uh..
waiting for him, that this was pre-arranged hide out?
Oh, no. No, I-I'm sure it wasn't.
As a matter of fact, she asked him to surrender
several times.
She has quite a high opinion of you.
- Of me? - Mm-hmm.
And of the way you handled yourself in the crisis.
Oh.
Well, I...I guess
if you have to do something
you do it.
Nursing must be quite a challenge for you.
Yes.
Quite a challenge.
I thought for a while that..
That what?
Nothing.
It's all over now.
[Marvin Miller] Richard Macklin is currently serving
a ten-year sentence in the California State prison
for the death of William Judson and the armed as*ault
of two Los Angeles police officers.
He still faces charges in Florida.
Through his cooperation, four leading members
of the southern Florida syndicate have been arrested
on anti-racketeering charges, and are now awaiting trial.
