banker Lawrence Reynolds boarded a Miami bound plane

with nearly two million dollars in cash in his possession.

On the same morning

a routine audit of Reynolds's San Francisco Bank

by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

uncovered possible violations of the Federal Reserve Act.

When FBI Inspector Lewis Erskine arrived

in San Francisco, Reynolds leave was exactly

one hour and 55 minutes.

Our main stumblin' block so far is Reynolds own reputation.

Few people we've talked to refused to believe

he's capable of embezzlement.

Including the FDIC official

who originally called us.

Who was that by the way, Allen?

Julian Scott.

He's a hard man to fool.

Well, Reynolds is a thief, he certainly fooled

more than one man in this town.

Comes from a highly regarded San Francisco family.

His father was president of the bank before him.

Did you talk to Reynolds, personally?

No. We tried to telephone

but there was no answer from the apartment.

I told his secretary he could reach us at Scott's office

if he should come in before 10 o'clock.

In the last 24 hours, my examiners have developed

a pretty bad picture where Reynolds is concerned.

Looks as though he may have embezzled roughly..

'We tried to reach his executive assistant'

'but the man was out of town.'

His name is Walter Kleef.

'We located him this morning, he was on vacation in Oregon.'

He's on his way back to the Bay area now.

What about Reynolds?

Well, there's no sign of him.

There's a trunk packed and ready to go.

Were you able to get anything out of the valet?

Well, he's only semi conscious

but he did mention the name, Burton

and something about gambling.

'some agents over to the hospital to relieve you.'

Reynolds plane just landed at Fort Worth

with nobody aboard, but the pilot.

He said Reynolds called him in the middle of the night

told him he might not be able to make the trip but to go ahead.

Have the plane serviced in Texas and wait for further orders.

Round the clock surveillance on the plane and the pilot.

- Yes, sir. - 'And bring the SAC Boston.'

'Up to date.'

Ask him to keep an eye on a Miss Beverly Kingman.

'Reynolds fiance, she works for the bank's office in Boston.'

- Right. - Allen..

Does the name Burton tie in anyway with the local gambling?

Yes, sir. It does.

Joe Lightner is the current man at the top.

He may have run out on some gambling debts

we're trying to follow that through now.

- What about Burton? - No luck there at all.

Oh, but a girl at the car rental desk

also recognized Reynolds and Ms. Kingman.

'I was talking to her when you got here.'

Ms. Torres, I wonder if you'd repeat to Inspector Erskine here

what you were telling me about these people.

Well, yes, of course. Uh, I remember them very well.

They came by about, oh, uh, about 6:30.

Well, I think it was about 6:30.

Did he, uh, did he try to disguise himself in any way?

I mean a moustache or anything like that?

Well, I suppose so.

Although, he was so rude it was hard to tell.

and then they left.

and then he took a black attache case

and put it in one of the deposit boxes over there.

Of course, they might have been picked up by a private car.

But no one on duty outside recalls seeing him at all.

And that in itself seems a little odd, doesn't it?

how conspicuous they were in here

and all the deliberate fuss they made.

It's almost as though Reynolds wanted to be sure

we knew he'd be back, isn't it?
