[intense music]
Is he dead?
'Can't take any risk, now, finish him.'
I meant you.
I know what you meant.
'Listen, man, don't get funny with me.'
I'm the one they'd recognized, I'm the one they'd go after.
As it is, I'm gonna have to leave the country.
Joe, I tremble for you.
Look, lemme tell you some--
Keep your voices down.
Ease out of it.
- Now, any more guards around? - 'No.'
[male #1] 'How many doors that cabin have?'
One in the front.
Jimmy, now there's just the two of them.
Now, you and the comic here can handle it, can't you?
'I mean, I've done my bit. I set it up for you.'
Now, shouldn't somebody go back to the car
so we can role the minute this thing's done?
Yeah, good idea. Keep the motor idling.
We'll be with you in five minutes.
[intense music]
How do you like to be climbing a mountain
and have that on the other end of the rope?
Come on.
[music continues]
[music continues]
[male #2] 'So, I says to him, "What do you care, boy?'
'"Your bank's insured, ain't it?'
[laughs]
Well, he couldn't take his eyes off that shotgun, you know.
I said, "Come on, boy, come on now, go get me the money".
[chuckling] Well, when he went..
[music continues]
Al!
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
Sweetest way to rob a bank I ever saw.
Beats working.
[laughing]
[theme music]
[male narrator] The FBI.
A Quinn Martin production.
Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Also starring, Philip Abbott..
...William Reynolds.
With guest stars
Diane Baker..
...Robert Duvall..
...Burt Brinckerhoff..
...Larry Gates.
Tonight's episode, "The Harvest."
[instrumental music]
Less than 36 hours after a g*ng
led by Billy Roy Silker
had held up a Delaware bank.
The robbers themselves had been attacked and robbed
in their Pennsylvania hideout.
Silker alone, though his life was to hang in the balance
for five full days
would survive to face FBI questioning.
[music continues]
Good morning, Billy. You remember me?
Hi, inspector.
Been quite a few years, hasn't it?
'How do you feel?'
I think you know your rights by now.
You don't have to answer my questions.
Would you like a lawyer?
Could I ask you one question first?
'Go ahead.'
Any of my friends get out?
Found one in the cabin.
One outside, both dead.
'How many dropped in on you?'
Two.
Did you recognize either of them?
Did you have all money with you in the cabin?
The guard and the cashier from the bank
identified your picture.
Most tellers keep special bills on hand and..
...feed out, in case of a hold up.
'Would help us to know whether'
'the men who hit you got all the money.'
That's the problem, isn't it?
Why bring the bureau into a personal fight?
Well, think about it.
You're gonna be flat on your back for a matter of weeks.
They've already got a five day jump on you.
'You'll have to hire extra muscle now.'
'And then you'll pay for that through the nose'
'if you can raise the cash.'
Then there's the trial.
You'll be charged with, uh, stealing money they're spending.
[sighs] Alright.
It was all in the cabin.
They must have got the whole bundle.
Can you give me names? Descriptions?
Nothin', it-it happened so fast.
'One started shootin' through the window.'
Another one come through the door.
They wore masks.
I could hear 'em talkin'
I, I didn't recognize any voices.
They must have known you.
Why?
Because they knew about the cabin.
Oh, yeah!
Yeah, I heard that cabin from a punk named Joe Troy.
Comes from Newark.
Very small time.
Well, I guess, that's it.
Thanks, Billy.
'Give 'em my love when you find 'em, inspector.'
I'll do that.
[intense music]
[music continues]
Well, there she is.
Everything you said.
Fifteen years.
I missed this country, I really have.
Now, where are we in relation to Frisco?
Don't call it Frisco around here.
It's San Francisco.
And it's, uh...South West.
San Mindres is over the next valley.
As I recall, the bank is about halfway down the main street.
The only street.
The only street?
Oh, what did you expect?
Something bigger.
Oh, you, uh, you don't wanna bother
with a little, one horse bank, huh?
Okay, what makes this little bank different?
Harvest time makes it different.
It's the end of the work here for these people.
Grapevines are loaded, they're pickin' 'em now.
When they're finished, they'll have a...party.
A fiesta, drink a little wine, make a little love.
And then the men will be paid off in cash.
Then most of 'em will head out to the next job.
I told Troy he should have come along with us.
- How much cash? - Well..
There are 1000 workers.
Supposing each worker has, uh..
...$500 coming to him?
I don't know why I ever fight you.
[chuckles] Neither do I.
Might just as well, relax
do as you're told and collect your money.
Might just as well.
[instrumental music]
Joseph Troy had, uh, one federal conviction.
Interstate car theft. He took two years.
Get me a list of his friends, cellmates and visitors.
Nothing on his Newark address?
No tell, but he hasn't been seen around there
in the last couple of days.
He said something about shipping yard going to Central America.
Oh, Lewis.
Looking for me?
We may have a lead on the Silker case, Art.
Boyd Taylor called a few minutes ago, from Charleston.
A reliable informant thinks he saw Joe Troy
sitting on a waterfront restaurant.
Well, that may be it then because
the Charleston Bank just found one of the bills
from the Delaware hold up.
It was a $50. Was turned in this morning by a bar.
Call Taylor, have him circulate
Troy's mugshots along the waterfront right away.
Yes, sir.
I'll call you from Charleston, Art.
[instrumental music]
Is that the bank?
That's the bank.
I wouldn't start crackers in that box.
Don't underestimate these people, George.
They're thrifty but they spend their money when it counts.
They need protection once a year
so that's when they're hirin'.
Extra guards. How many?
I'll scout around. See what I can pick up.
Oh, you walk up to somebody and tip your hat
and say, "Howdy, I'm a stranger in town, you see.
I've come to rob your bank. "
[laughs] No. I'll say, "Howdy, ma'am
"I'm your friendly hosiery salesman
and I got these beautiful samples to show you."
We talk about one thing and another
the harvest and the fiesta afterwards and
the extra policeman in town to keep order
and watch the bank and you know, gossip like that.
Hosiery samples?
'Well, the ones I got in the back of the car.'
The ones I picked up in Denver when you were asleep.
I hate to be surprised, George, so I preplanned.
I spot the apple I want, then I
figure out where it's gonna fall
and that's where I am when I shake the tree. Nothin' to it.
Well, where am I supposed to be
while you're out sweet talking the farmers daughters?
In the vineyards, working.
'Be no other reason for an able bodied young man'
'to be in San Mindres. You can't just sit around.'
You'd arouse suspicion.
Now, let's see, the state employment office
used to be across the street.
How do we contact each other?
I'll find you.
[instrumental music]
Oh, please, please lie still.
[indistinct chattering]
I'm alright. I'm alright. The truck barely touched me.
Sorry, senor, y-you came out without looking.
Just r-relax.
It's so much easier when you relax.
Relax, uh, right.
Are you hurt? Would you like a doctor?
No, I'm fine.
Can we, uh, drive you anywhere?
'Where do you work?'
Oh, as a matter of fact, I, I just arrived.
I was on my way to the state employment agency.
- Do you need a job? - Mm-hmm.
[speaking in foreign language]
Listen.
We'll drive you to the office if you like, but..
...as a matter of fact, we could use another hand at our winery.
Rancho Cintron.
I'm Lisa Cintron.
Hello.
This is Philippi Martinez.
- Hi. - Hello.
Unless you'd rather have..
...some other kind of work.
Oh, no. No, no. Uh, no.
- Be-be careful, be careful. - Slowly, Slowly.
- Are you alright? - Thank you, yes.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
Got a good lead on Troy just before you landed, Lou.
I thought you better come straight on out.
- Has he shown up? - Not yet.
Ticket agency's to your left, across the street.
A manager recognized Troy as soon as
we showed him the mugshots.
Troy had been in two days ago.
- Alone? - 'Alone.'
He booked passage to Panama on a freighter.
Under the name of Joseph Smith.
Said he'd be back at three o'clock
this afternoon to pickup his ticket.
'The ship sails at five.'
- Did you talk to the captain? - 'Yes, sir.'
He confirms he's holding space for a Joseph Smith, Newark
but he says that Smith hasn't made an appearance yet.
We've got the ship under surveillance.
Any other male passengers aboard?
No other passengers onboard or scheduled.
Lou.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
Kids dressed up like police.
That's not the Charleston uniform.
Troy. FBI.
[g*nsh*t]
[intense music]
[music continues]
Drop it.
Drop the case.
Hang onto the rail.
[Lewis] 'Where are your friends, Troy?'
My name's Smith. What friends?
Alright, Smith. Let's go.
[George] 'Well, look at the paper.'
'What is nine and six, is it 17?'
[Martinez] 'If you would only let me do it my own--'
No! It is 15, isn't it? 15.
Now if you can't add, hombre, just leave it blank.
- Stop pushing me, will you? - Now, what's the matter?
Wha-what's the matter?
[speaking in Spanish]
I'll tell you what the matter is.
He lets the field hands write down
the number of boxes they pick
and then he adds them up all wrong
and I'm supposed to untangle that mess!
Fine.
[speaking in foreign language]
May I see it please.
[instrumental music]
There. Okay?
Listen, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get you out here.
I can handle it, it's just that..
Well, the guy's been pulling out all afternoon.
Oh, each time I call him, I mean
he starts talkin' around, as if he owns the Earth.
I know but don't feel guilty.
He drives everybody crazy.
Well, maybe I'm out of line but, uh, what is this guy?
A relative?
You're not an aficionado, are you?
Of the bulls? No.
His the Matador Martinez.
He was numero uno, number one in Mexico
for, oh, twenty years.
Then, one Sunday he was gored.
All of a sudden, everything was gone.
The grace, the...bravery
the...crowds, the income.
He was struck down.
Now, he's become a heavy, slow, old man.
He never, he just needed help.
Like me and the truck, huh?
What?
You're a very charitable young lady.
You take in all the stray animals.
No, I'm not. Not all of them.
Certain ones, I wouldn't dare turn my back on.
Others, I trust right from the beginning.
How do you tell the difference?
Something in the eyes.
[instrumental music]
Excuse me.
Okay, I understand my rights. Got a pen?
You're entitled to council, you know.
Now, come on, gentlemen.
You have my records. You know my attitude.
When have I been anything but cooperative?
Let's start with this afternoon.
Listen, that was a terrible mistake on my part.
I admit it, but I didn't even hear you guys.
You could've been a bunch of robbers, for all I know.
You always carry a .45 against robbers?
First time I ever had a g*n on me in my life.
When I'm in a strange city, I had all that dough.
Yeah, where did you get those stolen bills, by the way?
I found them.
How does that sound for wild?
There was this bundle of..
...right in the middle of the street
it must've fallen out of somebody's car.
I'm not the kind of guy who's gonna
turn in a haul like that just for a reward.
You're lying.
Why?
Silker, didn't die.
We talked to him.
Oh, Lou.
The bureau phoned in this list of
Troy's friends and associates you wanted.
Anything significant?
Yeah, well, there's one name that is, uh, George Wilson.
He was a cellmate of Troy's.
He was, uh, took a one to ten for attempted bank robbery.
Paroled in July.
He asked for permission to go to New Jersey.
Uh, his last, uh, reporting officer was Newark.
Uh, you were telling us about that money you found.
I can't see any reason in the world why Silker, uh
should think that I was mixed up in that stick-up.
Well, let me explain the problem to you from a legal standpoint.
You see, the fact that you weren't in the cabin
with the other two, doesn't clear your m*rder charge.
You're gonna have to stand trial.
[intense music]
[sighs] I didn't think they were gonna hit anybody. I swear to God.
I couldn't believe my eyes when he k*lled the lookout.
When who k*lled the lookout?
George Wilson?
- Yeah. Wilson. - Who is the other man?
Just Jimmy. No last name.
'George brought him into it after Silker came to me'
and said he needed a cabin.
Jimmy was the one who laid it all out for us.
Very smart character.
Description?
Uh, six feet
uh, 190 pounds..
...grey hair...50 years old.
Where are they now?
They were gonna take a trip to the coast.
They asked me to go along, when I said "No"
they became very close-mouthed.
They got, uh, another job lined up out there, very big.
Neighborhood of half a million.
What kind of a car did they have?
I never got a very good look at it.
Convertible, that's all I know.
We used my car to go to the cabin.
Where were they headed for in the coast?
Mentioned San Francisco.
I got the impression the score was some place else.
Maybe a small town.
A bank?
I don't know.
All that was Jimmy said it was gonna be rough.
Very, very rough, he said.
[instrumental music]
So, matador.
How's she going today?
Well, I think it's right this time.
Very good.
I better be careful.
The boss will be givin' you my job.
She'll be kicking me out of the office.
Oh, no danger of that, jefe.
Now, if I were 25 years younger..
You've got an evil mind, Matador, huh?
Yes. Yes, I have.
[instrumental music]
The wines are getting a little lighter.
Boxes aren't coming in as fast today.
No, we ought to be finished by Thursday.
Just in time.
For?
Oh, the fiesta!
It'll go on all Thursday night in the mission square.
And on Friday, you can drop by the bank and, uh
pick up your money and..
[music continues]
And then what?
Oh, I don't know.
I'll head north, I suppose.
Is that where you come from? North?
Washington, Oregon?
Kansas.
Were you a farmer? Like the Cintrons?
I was when I was a kid.
I loved it.
But you gave it up. Why?
Oh, lots of reasons.
My dad lost the place for one thing.
You could have hired out to another farm.
Not quite sure why I never did.
You see, I met this guy when I was..
You know, it's really too bad.
What is?
Oh, that you can't turn it back.
Like a film, start again.
Don't you, don't you think that it, uh
will always be the same film?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
[music continues]
Lisa?
Did you see it too?
There's something in the eyes I said.
From the beginning, this was gonna happen.
Yes.
Please stay in San Mindres.
[music continues]
What if I were to say
"Come away with me, right now?"
Yes, what do you want?
Well, I, uh, I-I'm sorry.
Who-who do you want to see? Are you a wholesaler?
Ma'am. I'm, uh, I'm a hosiery salesman.
Well, I, uh..
I'm really not very interested.
Well, this'll only take a minute.
I'd like you to take a look
at the sheerness of these new stockings.
'Go ahead.'
Well, I..
Only if you like them.
I, uh, I hear there'll be a fiesta on Thursday evening.
You'll want to look your best.
You're going, aren't you?
Everybody'd going.
[instrumental music]
And Troy was fairly sure, was he they'd be at the Bay area bank?
He wasn't sure of anything, except that Wilson was in it.
He had the impression their target
would be in a small town, somewhere near here.
Mm-hmm.
We've alerted the resident agents from Fresno to Eureka.
There's nothing yet.
By the way, the bureau tried to call you
just before your plane landed.
They happened to catch you at the airport?
No, they dint.
Another one of those Delaware bills showed up.
- 'Where?' - Denver.
Get me Mr. Ward, will you, Allen?
Right.
'Marge, Inspector Erskine would like to talk to Mr. Ward.'
'Washington.'
Jimmy. Drawing just came in.
Good.
Third member of the g*ng. Based on Troy's description.
Local man, Allen?
I don't know the face.
[phone beeping]
Thanks.
- Arthur? - 'Yes, Lewis?'
On this new bill I found in Denver..
- 'Yes?' - Have you got the details?
Yes, it was part of a cash payment on a used car.
Agents showed the, uh, lot manager a number of mugshots
and he identified George Wilson as one of the two buyers.
Didn't recognize the other one.
He bought a 1966 camper.
Hmm. Was there a trade-in?
Yes, blue four door sedan, Indiana plates.
Not a convertible?
Mm, no, not a convertible. Why?
According to Troy, they had a convertible in Pennsylvania.
Well, it might be part of a pattern.
Changes cars every couple of days.
Maybe.
Okay, Art. Thanks very much.
Alright. Keep me informed.
Right.
Been changing cars all over the country.
And they've done it again here.
I want copies of these pictures
circulated to every car dealer in the vicinity.
[instrumental music]
Having trouble getting away?
No, I told her I wanted to take the truck
and drive by myself for a while to think.
- It's more truth than poetry. - Uh..
That, uh, that was quite a scene.
May be you ought to knock the next time.
Okay.
Okay. So you searched the world around
to find this goddess, this Cleopatra.
Let me ask you something.
What do you do with her after we hit the bank tonight?
Take her along?
No.
I'm gonna taker her before we hit the bank.
I've thought about it, Jim.
I want out.
- Forget it. - Jim.
'Man, grow up.'
We're committed. We're here.
Now, there are three guards on the armored truck.
And the town constable and his deputy, if they aren't busy
with the drugs, that's three to five.
One man can't handle them alone.
Then scarp this one altogether.
Possible half million? Are you nuts?
I hooked up with you, farm boy, because you were a realist.
You knew what you wanted, you had to get off of that
Kansas spread.
And what did it get me?
A stretch in the pen.
With Troy and that led to Silker.
What are you bellyaching about?
What seems to be your main problem anyway?
'I wanna settle down.'
What am I working for? A chance to stop, right?
With a woman. Well, I found a woman.
Mm-mm. She's a smart girl. I talked to her.
What does she say when you register as an ex-con?
I don't.
What does she say when you're picked up for
not registering as an ex-con?
She'll understand.
'Oh!'
'Then why haven't you told it?'
'You can't go back and pretend as if nothing happened'
'and I can't afford to let you pretend even if you wanted to.'
Relax. We've been this route before.
Just do as you're told and collect your money. Okay?
Never mind, amigo. I got a man to help me.
[instrumental music]
Inspector, Erskine?
I'm Clay Ashland.
I'm the one who contacted you about Mr. Thornton here.
How are you? Clay, this is Tom Colby.
- Colby. - Thank you.
Uh, Mr. Thornton, did one of these men buy car from you?
Yes, sir.
'That's the fellow.'
'Turn in a '66 Camper with Colorado plates'
'for the '68 blue station wagon.'
This one was with him. Didn't say much though.
Looks like the, uh, older one was the one in charge.
What name did he give you, Mr. Thornton?
J.J. Smith.
Address?
I have it here, uh
Hotel Great Orient, 3-9-3-3 Sutter.
Happen to go by there the other day, it's a vacant lot.
Did either of these men seem familiar with San Francisco?
The older one was or he had been at one time.
I told him the station wagon was used by a firm in the building.
He asked me if the Venetian Gardens
was still open out there.
And is it?
Nah. It's been closed for ten years now.
Did they happen to make any phone calls?
- No. - 'Or mention any names?'
No.
I put a sticker with a temporary registration number
on the back window and thanked them and they took off.
Wait a minute.
Pacific Avenue, inspector.
They stopped and Smith asked
if Pacific Avenue would take them to highway 532.
That do you any good?
It might.
Thanks very much, Mr. Thornton.
Any time.
Clay, you know of anything along highway 532
that might make sense to the target?
Well, Santa Rosa's up there. It's a pretty town.
But there are probably dozens of institutions
in San Francisco that'll yield a bigger haul.
Or maybe I better contact the resident agents
in Santa Rosa, anyway.
Yeah.
You might see what used to be a
Yes, sir.
[instrumental music]
[crowd chattering]
Not too much. That's fine. That's fine.
Weak head.
[music continues]
Howdy, ma'am.
Yes, hello.
This, uh, this fiesta is really gonna be something.
I've never seen anything like it in my life.
It's really great, isn't it?
Great.
I, uh, I understand they set off fireworks later.
Yes, it's the, uh, tradition, as soon as it gets dark.
I hear they really shake you up.
Clerk in the hotel said it sounds like World w*r III.
Rockets, cherry bombs, the whole shebang.
I wouldn't wanna miss that.
I'll bet you wouldn't.
Uh, see you around.
[music continues]
What about the resident agencies further north, Hillsburg, Ukiah?
Alright, thank you.
Alright, and the coach.
Alright. I'll tell him.
Now, they kept juggling the numbers around
and finally came up with 3-3-3-9 Sutter.
It's a hotel called the Maryland.
Twelve years ago, it was the Great Orient.
- Same owners? - 'Same family.'
'The husband's dead but the wife thinks she remembers Jimmy.'
She recalls a man who lived there for a few months
about a 15 years ago.
She can't put a last name with the picture
but she and the agents are going over
the registration cards now.
It's still acquired at Santa Rosa, Lou.
No unusual activity at Healdsburg or Ukiah.
There's nothing on the coast.
What about the towns further east, uh, Napa, Vacaville.
Well, 532 doesn't tie into that area at all.
You'd have to double back, come south again on the spur.
Four ninety I think it is, that's the old road.
'Now, that's a beautiful country in there though.'
'Specially now, it's harvest time in the vineyards.'
The old road, you say?
Yes, they built a cut off into the valley eight years ago.
It was after Jimmy's time.
If that's the way he was headed, that's the route he'd take.
What's the first big town he'd come to on 490, Allen?
Well, there's only one town big or little. San Mindres.
- How long a drive is it? - 'It's about an hour.'
I'd like to take a look around.
Call the sheriff, will you? Fill him in.
- Tell him we're on our way. - Right.
[instrumental music]
[indistinct chatter]
Thank you.
- No. - No more wine..
I'm sorry, it's wonderful but I've had enough.
It's a very unusual quality in a man.
To know when enough is enough.
When it's time to stop.
Lisa..
[music continues]
I want to tell you something.
Explain something.
I couldn't give you the kind of life that you're used to.
I understand that now.
I used to think that people could change but they can't.
Why should they change?
I love you.
Not what you have.
There's more to it than that.
[chattering continues]
What's happening?
It's the matador.
[grunts]
[instrumental music]
[crowd cheering]
Drunk?
It's the only time he touches the cape now.
[crowd cheering]
Look at their faces.
[music continues]
Heh-heh. Heh-heh.
[crowd cheering]
[crowd applauding]
You see...people don't change.
That's what Martinez is.
The first matador of Mexico.
Not the...coward he turned into.
Not the drunk.
Not the old man who couldn't even add nine and six.
He was born graceful and brave.
And that'll be there until he dies
no matter what happens.
Par usted, morena.
[crowd applauding]
[speaking in foreign language]
[instrumental music]
[man on radio] 'SF 40.'
SF 40, go ahead.
'1953 hotel registration identifies Jimmy'
'as James Reed, Sonoma, California.'
'Convicted bank robber.'
'Unable to contact San Mindres police.'
'Switchboard jam due to fiesta.'
'San Mindres Bank currently holding'
'six hundred and seventy thousand dollars. Over.'
Right, we have it. SF 40, clear.
[indistinct chattering]
[instrumental music]
You like to cut it close, huh?
There's time.
Hold out your hand.
Now this job isn't going to be much trouble.
Don't worry about it.
Town constable and his deputies are busy handling the drugs.
There she goes.
[music continues]
[intense music]
Go ahead.
I burned my hand on some fireworks
I want to call the ambulance.
Hey, hey, hey! Come here.
[g*nsh*t]
[dramatic music]
[g*nshots]
[indistinct shouting]
[instrumental music]
[shouting continues]
Do you know where the sheriff is?
[music continues]
- Come on, let's go. - No, no, there's more.
[instrumental music]
[intense music]
Floor it!
Turn it, George, turn it around.
[music continues]
Go on! Go on!
[music continues]
[g*nshots]
FBI, Reed, drop it.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
You're alright..
We're taking you to the hospital in Napa.
Reed?
He wasn't hit. He's in custody.
People don't change.
But sometimes it takes a long time
to get back to the beginning.
You're going to love Kansas.
You'll love the fine farm.
Yes.
[male narrator] James Reed was convicted in federal court
for the armed robbery of the San Mindres Bank.
George Wilson died of wounds received in the hold-up.
Federal prosecution of Joseph Tate
for the interstate transportation
of stolen property was declined
and he was returned to Pennsylvania
to stand trial for m*rder.
Billy Roy Silker is serving a sentence
in a federal penitentiary for bank robbery.
[theme music]
