[jazz music]
[male on radio] 'This is WBBT, the all night voice of Newark, New Jersey'
'where we hit you with the really big platters.'
'The time is 3:30 in the AM.'
'Now get ready, all you good night type workers.'
That's it.
[dramatic music]
[engine cranking]
[tires screeching]
Out.
Alright, open it.
[music continues]
Easy.
- What's the trouble? - Oh, a little accident.
- No damage. - What happened?
Like he said, it was just an accident.
You alright?
Yeah, sure.
It was just a misjudgment, officer.
Why don't we all forget it, huh?
Alright, in the future, be more careful.
Alright, get 'em out of there. Keep your hands up!
[g*nshots]
[tire pops]
[engine revving]
Come on, I'm not waitin'.
We'll send help. I promise you.
[tires screeching]
[tire rattling]
[siren wailing]
- What's the matter? - The tire, let's go.

Tonight's episode
"Blood Tie."
On July 6th, the hijacking of an inter-state shipment of furs
on a Newark, New Jersey street was to launch the FBI
into one of it's most difficult and dangerous man-hunts.
Even as the police officer
who had tried to prevent the robbery fought for his life
an investigation was begun by the Special Agents of FBI
headed by Inspector Lewis Erskine.
Alright, thank you.
Officer Haines is still critical.
But he was able to give a description
of two of the suspects.
But it was so general that I doubt it'll be much help.
He did mention that one of them had a scar.
Did he describe it?
Lapsed into coma before he could specify.
What about the truck drivers?
They confirmed Officer Haines' description
of the subject's car.
That's all the information they could give.
Are there any other details avail..
Agency unit five believe they found the hijack car.
Oh, where?
About ten miles outside of Newark
on a secondary road turn-off.
It matched the description the officer gave.
They called in the license number. It was stolen.
They think they switched to another car they planted there.
Any latent prints?
The car is being processed now, but nothing so far.
Do we have identification yet on the subject who was k*lled?
Not yet, but we should be getting a report
from Iden on his fingerprints any minute now.
[whistles]
Federal heat.
What's our move, Rick?
What do you think?
I was thinkin' about Alex.
Layin' out in that street with a hole through him.
And that cop.
He wasn't too old, was he?
[chuckles]
Send him a letter, lover.
Pretty boy.
Dreams up great capers.
Freezes up solid when a rookie cop waves a g*n at him.
You wanna try wavin' a g*n at me now, Frank?
Alright.
Look, we better split up.
Just till things cool off.
Where you gonna be, Max?
I'm only going as far as Minneapolis.
You wanna get a hold of me, you call George Landis there.
Alright. You?
I'm not sure where I'll be.
I've got some personal business to handle.
What about you, Rick?
I think I'll see a friend.
Know this man?
No, sir, I don't.
His name is Alex Ellis. An ex parolee.
He was k*lled in the attempted hold up of your company's truck.
Uh, we have witnesses who positively identified you
as associating with Ellis one week before the robbery.
[chuckles]
Oh, they're crazy.
[chuckling]
I-I never saw him before.
Before you took your present position with Ashton Air Freight
you attended a trade school, uh, Barry Technical Institute.
That was in 1963.
One of those enrolled there was Alex Ellis.
[Erskine] 'If I'm not mistaken, you were good friends at the time.'
Alright, I knew him, but...but I haven't seen him in years.
Three days ago, you made a bank deposit of $1,500.
Would you mind telling us where you got the money?
I, uh, I sold my car.
You don't own a car, Mr. Rogers.
As a matter of fact, um
you don't have a current driver's license in this state.
You're tryin' to connect me with that robbery.
I had nothing to do with it.
A police officer was gravely wounded in the hold-up.
If he dies, it'll be a m*rder case.
You're not gonna pin that on me. I wasn't even there.
I only..
You only what?
They gave me $1,500
for information about Air Freight shipments.
I needed the money badly. My wife's been sick and I--
Who's they?
Ellis and another man I've never met before.
Uh, he-he didn't give me his name.
We have some pictures of some past associates of Ellis.
Would you look at them, please?
Surely.
Him. Uh, h-h-he's younger here, but it's the same one.
[Erskine] '"Frank Wanderman.'
'"Escaped from Dannemora State three months ago.'
"Federal warrant outstanding charging unlawful flight
to avoid confinement."
Better notify the bureau.
We'd like to prepare a statement for your signature.
Do you think that wounded policeman's gonna make it?
[instrumental music]
[Neal] 'And it is felt that further research'
'in this form of chemical synthesis'
will be too costly at this time.
Paragraph.
Uh, if you are planning to be in Seattle
we can discuss it further at that time.
[intercom buzzes]
- Yes? - 'Mr. Kriton?'
'There's a man to see you.'
'I told him you were occupied but--'
Who is it?
'He said to tell you the lousy penny's turned up again.'
Um, send him in.
Will you excuse me, Ms. Hally?
Hi, Neal.
Long time..
...no see?
This is beautiful. Just beautiful.
You've really moved up, haven't you?
General Manager now.
You gonna ask me to sit down?
[chuckles]
Alright, I'll sit down anyway.
I'm really proud of you.
I wish I could return the compliment.
What kind of trouble are you in?
[chuckles]
Do I have to be in trouble
to visit my own big brother?
Invariably.
You never forget, do you, Neal?
- You never let me forget. - Alright.
I made a couple of mistakes and I paid for 'em.
A couple?
How many has it been now?
Bad check charges, larceny, petty theft.
And, uh, the burglary bust.
I mean, I wouldn't want you to forget that.
'I haven't.'
Or the $5,000 you cost me
when you ran out of the bond I put up for ya.
What do you think it cost me?
It cost me two years of my life.
Don't you think I've paid up? Don't you think I've learned?
I don't know. Have you?
Ah, what's the difference? You wouldn't believe me.
[chuckles]
Oh boy, oh boy.
Still the same, good Neal.
'Clean, hard working, reverent.'
I believed you all your life, Ricky.
Don't you talk to me like I'm a child!
'And don't you sit in judgment.'
Alright, I made mistakes and I was human.
You can't forget it.
Neal, it sounds like you hate me.
I don't know. Maybe you hated me since we were kids.
Hated you?
What are you talking about?
I remember..
I remember when-when mother died
after you were born.
Dad was really broken up, and I remember..
...the day they brought you home.
I stood there looking at you thinking
how wonderful it was to have a brother.
I was a big eight years old and I-I turned to dad
and said, uh, "Don't worry, I, uh, I'll love him
and I'll take care of him."
I tried to keep that promise.
I guess I haven't done very well.
I'm grateful for everything. I really am, Neal.
I'd rather have cut off my arm that come back here.
Why did you come back?
I was broke.
And I needed help.
And forget it.
I, uh, I won't give you anymore money.
But I will give you a chance.
'A job.'
What kind of a job?
All I have open is a clerk's job down in the warehouse.
A clerk?
Oh, come on, Neal. You can do better than that.
But I won't.
Not until you earn it.
You, uh, you interested?
When do I start?
- Okay. - Okay.
- Oh, oh. - Hey, huh?
- Huh? Huh? - Huh?
- Huh? - Oh.
Whoa!
[laughing]
- Terrific. - Yeah.
- Same old grip. - That's right.
I'm still the big brother. Don't you forget it.
I can pin your ears back anytime you get out of line.
[laughs]
Hey, thank you, Neal.
'I appreciate everything.'
I promise you, you won't regret it.
Okay.
Have we been through the rest of his known associates?
How was he on the last report?
And was anyone there in Newark?
- Oh, that's good. - Except Rogers, of course.
What about further interviews?
No, divorced. No children.
- No immediate family. - I see.
- Well, let me know. - The scar?
Well, nothing further. Ellis had none.
Wanderman's file doesn't show any.
Alright, I'll get back to you.
Well, the Newark office just called.
Looks as if Officer Haines is gonna make it.
Good.
Although he's still in no condition
to give us any further information.
Well, here's a report from firearm's identification unit
on the slug removed from Officer Haines.
Automatic p*stol cartridge, nine millimeter.
Probably from a Luger.
I think Wanderman's file says he's used a Luger in the past.
Excuse me, sir.
We've located Wanderman's ex-wife
in the civil fingerprint file.
She's working at a convalescent hospital
in Kansas City as a practical nurse.
Did you contact the Kansas City office?
Yes, sir. They have her under surveillance.
Uh, there's been no contact with Wanderman that they know of.
Art, he was quite bitter and vindictive in prison
when she divorced him.
I think I'd better get out there.
Why, do you think he might seek revenge?
That's all he talked about.
Alright, then, go ahead.
If you can get him, he might lead us to the other two.
[instrumental music]
[laughing]
It was a terrific dinner, Denise. You're a great cook.
Thanks a lot.
[door opens]
- Hi. - Oh, hi.
I'm sorry, I'm late and I'm starved.
Did you save me any dinn..
Ricky, you remember this young lady?
This isn't Laurie, the little baby sister?
Well, baby sisters grow up.
Well, I see.
The mystery man. I haven't seen you since I was twelve.
- And I had a crush then. - Well, I'm very flattered.
Well, are you gonna be staying with us?
Oh, just for a little while.
Till I find a place of my own.
Laurie, uh, Ricky hasn't seen all the house yet.
Why don't you show him around?
Hey, we're starting a game here.
Oh, well, that's impossible. You're missing a few pieces.
Come on.
You should've asked me, Neal.
Are we gonna go through this again?
I told you, he's changed.
I wish I could believe that.
Now, what do you mean by that?
Look, I realized he's your brother and that
well, except for me, he's all the family that you have.
But..
...I-I'm afraid.
You make him sound like some kind of monster.
Look, maybe-maybe he's been a little weak.
But that's I've got to help him now
until he gets back on his feet.
Can't you see?
I see that you just can't go on helping him forever.
What do you want me to do? Throw him out?
- Tell him I can't do a thing? - Yes.
For once in your life, be a little selfish.
If he's changed, let him prove it.
Let him, let him stand up on his own feet..
Oh, Neal.
I don't wanna be a shrew.
I don't adore you as a wife.
I love you as a person because of all the things you are.
All the things that Ricky isn't.
He's no good. He infects everything he touches.
Like you said, he's my brother.
Who else has he got now?
"And we hope that you're in good spirits
"and received the package that I sent.
"We hope to get out to see you sometime this month.
- 'Mrs. Wanderman?' - And.."
Will you excuse me a minute please, Jim?
- Mrs. Wanderman? - Yes?
We're with the FBI. I'm Inspector Erskine.
This is Mr. Colby.
If it's about my husband
I haven't seen him in an year and a half.
Has he written or called you in the last six months?
Well, he-he doesn't even know where I am.
Mrs. Wanderman, uh, we understand
that you worked at this hospital before you were married.
Yes, I did.
Isn't it possible he might figure you'd come back here?
Well, we're divorced.
And, um, he knows that I would refuse to see him.
Well, he's made threats against you.
You're life could be in danger.
Oh, I-I don't believe he'd ever carry them out.
Mrs. Wanderman, I think you should know
he's been involved in a hijacking
'and the sh**ting of a police officer.'
If you hear anything about him, please call us.
Here I am, Jim. Now let's see.
[instrumental music]
[machines whirring]
[male #1] 'Get with, Kriton.'
You sleep at home. Here, we work. Now move.
Take it easy.
Don't give me any of this take it easy.
And don't think because you're related to the head man..
You alright?
You better get to first aid. You'll make it?
What am I gonna do with you?
Fire me.
That'd be too easy.
Alright. Then move me up, Neal.
Let me out of this filthy hole.
How? You can't hold down what you've got.
Alright, so I blew my top.
I was, it was the first time.
You told me the other day I was doing fine.
Oh, and that, uh, that rates you and office and a secretary?
You think it happens that fast?
How fast does it happen?
Sit down.
You know how long I pushed a hand cart before I was moved up?
Alright, Neal, look.
Don't break my heart, huh?
Will you just give it to me straight?
How long do I stay buried like this? What, a year?
- Five years? Ten years? - Alright!
I'll give it you straight.
Nobody owes you any favors.
You work, you sweat it out on your own guts.
You think you're buried? Then dig yourself out.
And you don't do it by breaking someone's teeth
every time you get a little heat.
Alright.
I'm sorry.
I've got your office ready for you.
Right beside my own.
When you're ready for it.
But you have to prove you're ready.
How long?
You got a lot to learn about the business.
That takes time.
You mean years?
A few, at least.
Can you do it?
Where can I get a better deal?
Trust me, Rick.
You know, someday it could be the way it used to be
when we were kids.
Remember?
You and me against the world.
That's right.
Now let me see if I can straighten things
with your supervisor.
That was pretty good right hand.
[instrumental music]
[intense music]
'Hey.'
Frank.
Where is the car?
[music continues]
Oh Frank, please. Please, let's talk, Frank.
I-I had planned to come back to you. I swear I did, Frank.
Let me go. Please, let me go.
Get in the car!
[dramatic music]
FBI, Wanderman!
'Stay right where you are.'
Get on the car and..
...walk away.
[knocking on door]
Come in.
Hi, mystery man.
Mystery man?
So quite in the house, I thought you've gone out, too.
No, I'm kind tired.
[mellow music]
Is something wrong?
No..
Um, I'm just in love, that's all.
Why don't you notice me?
Well, I do.
Hmm.
But you don't feel anything.
Maybe I can't let myself.
Because of the trouble you are in.
[chuckles] You know, I don't care about that.
Is that it, Ricky?
Hey, you're not bad. I know.
You can't go around feeling guilty all the time.
But I do.
Because I'm fraud, baby.
Hey, Ricky
look at me.
Leave me alone, Laurie.
It won't work.
Won't it?
[music continues]
Get out.
Go on, get out!
For your own good, get out!
Give me, uh, Minneapolis information.
[instrumental music]
[telephone ringing]
[Rick] 'Max.'
Rick.
Where are you?
Seattle.
Listen..
You ready to roll again?
Maybe.
What's the score?
Drug warehouse.
'Cocaine and morphine.'
'About a quarter of a million dollars worth.'
'Are you interested?'
Fascinated.
What's the setup?
I'll give you the details later.
How soon can you get out here?
In a plane, maybe tomorrow.
Alright. Now, look.
Bring a hired g*n.
Top dollar and somebody you can trust.
As a matter of fact, if you can't find anybody out there
you call me back here tonight and I'll see what I can do.
Yeah, hold on a second. Let me get your number.
'Seattle area is 206.'
Number is 623-8410.
Listen, Rick.
I don't think there'll be any problem.
I'll, uh, call you back when I know more.
[intense music]
I don't know anything about a freight truck hold-up.
Wanderman, our laboratory has confirmed that
the b*llet that officer Haines was fired from your g*n.
Who was with you?
[telephone ringing]
Colby.
Fine.
Lou, Mr. Ward.
Yes, Art.
Now, Lewis, we got a hit from the NCIC
on the registration number of Wanderman's Luger.
It was one of a group of weapons
taken during the burglary of a Newark g*n shop on July 1st.
A Max Kerry, white male, American, 30 years of age
is a suspect in the case.
He was an employee of the g*n shop.
But he hasn't been seen since the theft.
Anything else on him?
Yes, he was paratrooper.
Received a medical discharge in 1965 due to a training accident.
A phosphorus grenade exploded and injured his arm.
That could be the scar we're looking for.
'Yes, it would seem so.'
What's his background?
Born and raised in Detroit.
Lived in Minneapolis for five years.
I've alerted the field officers in the both cities.
They're investigating.
Well, Lewis, it looks as if we've identified the third man.
One to go.
[instrumental music]
[birds chirping]
Ricky, I know you're lying.
I'm not lying.
I heard you on that phone.
And you were asking somebody to help you with a robbery.
Cocaine and morphine. Now, I heard it clearly.
Ricky, will you please try to tell the truth?
Alright, I'll tell you the truth.
We were gonna knock over some pusher.
Just some little creep that meant nothing to nobody.
Honey, we'd be doing the world a service.
How? By selling the drugs yourself?
Ricky what could you be thinking of?
How can you do this?
[instrumental music]
Hey, you're right.
You're right.
I just can't handle myself.
Will you help me?
[birds chirping]
Yes, it's the man who sub-let the room from Mr. Landers.
He moved out this morning.
Do you know where he went?
Did he leave Minneapolis?
Ooh, I couldn't say.
Do you mind if we look around?
No, not at all.
[instrumental music]
I see.
Well, thank you very much.
The digits on the burnt piece of paper
were part of a telephone number.
The 206 is the Seattle area code and the city has 6-2 exchange.
Telephone company's trying to trace it to
Kerry's number in Seattle, but it could take hours.
We have more information about Kerry from clerks
at the Minneapolis terminal.
Did they identify him?
Yes, sir. From his photograph, his wrist scar
and his surly disposition.
He took a flight to Seattle the morning of July 16th.
You better get out there, Lewis.
I'll notify the Seattle field office.
Alright, if they locate Kerry
have them keep him under surveillance.
[telephone ringing]
Hello.
Hello, hello, it's me.
Listen..
We can't make the show tonight.
I have to work a couple of more hours.
W-what time will you be home?
Ah, about 9:00.
We can still have dinner. Huh?
- See you then? - Ricky..
You're alright, aren't you?
Oh, yeah. I'm more than alright.
I'm great.
Hey, Laurie, it's a new life for me.
I'm glad.
Is anybody with you?
No, Neal's not home yet.
Denise went to her club meeting.
You haven't told 'em anything I said to you, have you?
No. Do you think I ever would?
Like you said, that's all over now.
I have to get back to work now.
- Laurie? - Yes?
Thanks for everything.
I only wish that this had happened between us before.
You almost sound like you're saying goodbye.
Now, don't be silly.
See you in a couple of hours!
[instrumental music]
All set?
Yeah, let's go.
[engine revving]
Laurie, what are you doing here?
I thought you and Ricky had a date.
Well, he just called. He said he had to work late.
Late? Ricky?
That's strange.
We have a crew scheduled for overtime
but Ricky wasn't on it.
Are you sure?
Almost certain.
Neal.
I don't know much about your business..
...but do you handle narcotics?
Of course.
Morphine and cocaine?
Why are you asking?
Now come on, tell me.
[intense music]
[engine revving]
There's nothing on Kerry yet.
But we just received an answer from the telephone company.
You know, the billing to Kerry's number in Minneapolis
cross-checked with a Seattle number
listed to a Neal Kriton.
He's a general manager of a pharmaceutical firm.
Well, is there anything on Kriton?
Not him, but he has brother with a long arrest record.
Richard Kriton.
Served two years in Auburn state prison New York for
burglary and armed as*ault.
He was released January, 1968.
Alright, let's try the Pinedale Drive address.
When we was talking on the phone, he didn't say where.
Just mentioned morphine and cocaine.
Did he say a shipment?
When I talked to him, he said they were going to rob a person.
A narcotics pusher.
On the phone, he mentioned a large amount.
We have a quarter of a million dollar delivery of cocaine
and morphine coming in at the warehouse at 8:00 o' clock.
On his last call, was he at the warehouse?
I'm going down there.
Oh, Neal, this could be a mistake.
I hope you're right.
[intense music]
[instrumental music]
[engine revving]
Hello, Rick. Thought you finished your shift.
Ah, I figured I'd get in some overtime.
Oh!
Have you an assignment slip?
'Alright, don't move.'
Now move. Come one!
[dramatic music]
[engine revving]
[tires screeching]
Over there!
Come on.
Everybody in the office, move!
Move!
You, over there!
Max, get his g*n.
[music continues]
Hold it!
We're gonna need your uniforms.
Come on!
- Oh, Denise. - Laurie, what's the matter?
[door bell rings]
Just a minute.
- Mrs. Kriton? - Yes.
Uh, we're with the FBI.
I'm Inspector Erskine.
We'd like to talk to your husband.
Is Neal here?
Laurie, what is it? Where's Neal?
He went back to the warehouse after Ricky.
I think there's going to be trouble.
What kind of trouble? Tell me!
[intense music]
A shipment of cocaine and morphine.
Try to find out the carrier.
And dispatch all available units
to the South bay warehouse of Copeland Pharmaceuticals.
Thank you.
Metcaffe.
You take the main gate.
Max, you go around the back.
SE-21 to control.
[male on radio] 'This is control, go ahead.'
Ah, request disposition of units.
'Units 5 and 8 report they are five minutes from Copeland.'
'Units 6 and 10 converging to assist.
Any reply from the Copeland security office?
'Negative, we've called the guard stations.'
'No answer. we'll keep trying.'
[engine revving]
[music continues]
Ricky!
All you wanted was another chance, huh?
Oh, no, man. Please, get out of here before it's to late.
No.
No, you get out.
Out of my plant, my home..
Out of my life.
Right now!
Neal, I'm warning you, please.
I don't wanna have to use this.
Just get out of my life.
Stupid!
[horn honking]
That's the truck.
[intense music]
- Look out, it's a trap! - No!
[g*nsh*t]
Hey!
Give me your g*ns..
...real easy.
Put that in the other truck.
[music continues]
[tires screeching]
It's the FBI, drop your g*n!
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nsh*t]
[tires screeching]
Hold it!
Drop it!
[instrumental music]
[engine cranking]
We've sent for an ambulance, Mr. Kriton.
It should be here any minute.
Neal..
Am I dying?
No.
No, you're gonna be alright.
[chuckles]
Sure.
Is there any forgiveness left in you?
Always.
You're a fool.
I-I love you.
Hide me, Neal.
Cover for me.
Please.
[melancholic music]
He's gone.
He was gonna be alright.
We were gonna work together.
[music continues]
[male narrator] Max Kerry, Frank Wanderman and Weldon Rogers
were found guilty in federal court of theft
from inter-state shipment.
Kerry and Wanderman were also tried and convicted
in state court of attempted m*rder.
All three were sentenced to terms in the penitentiary.
[theme music]
[music continues]
